Defect SummaryPiaggio is recalling 128 top cases sold as an moto guzzi accessory for my 2007 and 2008 moto guzzi norge motorcycles. the locating tab on the top case mounting bracket can break possibly allowing the top case to fall off the motorcycle.
Consequence SummaryA vehicle crash could occur should the top case fall from the motorcycle and become an obstacle to other motorists.
Corrective SummaryMoto guzzi will notify owners and replace the defective mounting bracket with a new bracket. the recall began on june 24, 2008. owners may contact moto guzzi customer care at 1-212-380-4400, option #4.

Defect SummaryPiaggio is recalling 646 my 2007-2008 moto guzzi norge 1200 motorcycle models equipped with triom headlights, low beam bulb and headlight reflectors. the headlight low beam bulb has a pigtail wire attached to it. this wire connects the low beam bulb to the motorcycle's wiring harness. it may touch the hardware used to secure the bulb in the reflector. over time and vibration the insulation may wear through causing the direct short to ground. this short causes the motorcycle's main fuse to blow and all electrical power to the motorcycle to stop.
Consequence SummaryElectrical power to the motorcycle is cut off and as a result, the engine stalls increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install a new bulb with an extra protection around the power wire to provide greater protection. the recall began on september 11, 2008. owners may contact piaggio at 212-380-4431.

Fuel tank has expanded to the point that it cannot be attached to the motorcycle as designed. either the front mounting bumpers need to be modified (reduced in size), or the rear mounting point (rubber spacer, metal spacers) needs modification. lengthwise expansion appears to be approximately 5mm. *tr

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

The plastic fuel tank expands due to ethanol fuel used in the united states. this could cause a fuel leak eventually. the maker of the cycle does not notify the consumer upon purchase.

Motorcycle experiences sudden loss of power as a result of fuel line becoming disconnected from fuel pump inside fuel tank. this has occurred to me twice; once while traveling on an interstate highway at highway speeds, and again on a secondary road. it is a significant safety issue as i was in the third lane from the shoulder and had to, without power, weave through traffic in order to not be broken down in the middle of traffic traveling at 55 m.p.h. or more. even on the secondary road, which was a four-lane highway, i had to maneuver the motorcycle through traffic to get to the shoulder of the highway so as not to be stopped in a travel lane. when this initially happened in june 2008, the motorcycle was under warranty and the dealership repaired the problem under that warranty. the dealership alerted me to the fact that this was a common problem on moto guzzi motorcycles from 2007, and that there had been a formal recall on another model of moto guzzi, but not on my model. i presumed the dealer repair in june 2008 was sufficient to remedy the problem until it happened again this month (june 2009). the motorcycle is no longer under warranty, and i will need to foot the bill for the repair out of my own pocket. i am less bothered by the fact that i will need to have the same problem repaired a second time than for the potential for this to happen again to me or to others who ride these motorcycles. there is a nhtsa recall on another moto guzzi model of this same year, but not on my particular model. if the problem is typical of moto guzzis from 2007, it would seem that this recall should extend to all affected motorcycles. my particular model is a moto guzzi nevada 750. form below will show norge, but that is because you have no option to choose nevada 750. the approximate incident date on this form is the most recent occurrence of this event. the previous occurrence was in june 2008, and the exact date is available if necessary. *tr
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

Rear master cylinder is sucking air into the brake lines. rear brake no longer works. fix is to bleed rear brake, but problem resurfaces again. this problem is well documented at:http://forum.guzzitech.com/forum/188/4624.html?start=10 apparently a result of the use of aluminum and steel parts in the master cylinder for the rear brake that causes seals to go bad.
