ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

On thursday, sept 1, at approximately 2pm, i was traveling east on state road 185 when i noticed the motorcycle began to run poorly. the engine would suddenly shut off and restart. this happened twice. the instrument cluster ceased to function. i pulled the bike to the side of the road and noticed smoke coming from the right side of the motorcycle in the area of the spu and fuel tank. being familiar with this motorcycle and the problems with the spu reported by other owners, i feared it was failing. the smoke got worse, i.e. it intensified in volume and and became acrid with the smell of burning plastic. i quickly removed the passenger seat to access the factory provided tool kit. i removed the side panels from the tank, i removed the fuel tank, and found the spu smoldering. it had already started to melt the tank. i disconnected the spu from the main wire harness and removed the spu from the bike. i took pictures of the damage and notified my insurance company. they photographed the damage as well and paid me for a new tank. they would not pay for the spu as that was the cause of the fire. my insurance covers the damage from the fire, not the cause of it. mv agusta is aware that these spus are faulty. they have redesigned the unit and it now carries a different part number. to my knowledge, they have not issued a recall to replace the defective units with new ones, rather they wait for a problem to be reported to a dealer. sometimes the units are replaced under warranty, sometimes not. none of the failures reported that i am aware of have been as severe as mine. i believe the old spu on these bikes is improperly designed and the flaw could lead to significant damage to property, and serious injury or even death.

The service power unit (spu) shorted internally and caught fire. a hole burned through the back of the plastic unit. since the spu rests against the fuel tank, which is plastic on this motorcycle, the fire started to melt the fuel tank. i was able to remove the fuel tank and the smoldering spu from the bike before the fuel tank melted and gasoline spilled onto the burning spu. i have pictures of both the fuel tank and the damaged spu which i have forwarded to mv agusta usa. the part number for the defective spu is 8000a9615. spus with this part number are failure prone and their failures are well documented. headlights remaining lit after the bike has been shut off, blinkers not functioning properly, the motorcycle continuing to run even after the key has been removed from the ignition are all symptoms of a failing spu. i have not heard of a failure as catastrophic or as dangerous as the one i experienced. mv agusta (the manufacturer) is aware of the problems with these spus and have redesigned the unit. the new part number is 8a00a9615. a second replacement part number is 8a00a9300. although mv agusta has replaced the defective units at their discretion, there has not been a general recall. evidence points to a manufacturing defect that could result in significant property damage and serious injury or death to the vehicle operator. motorcycles equipped with the spu part number 8000a9615 are unsafe to ride.
