Nissan altima 2002 keeps having problem with the crankshaft and camshaft sensors and once you replace them a couple months later you'll have the same problem. this problem causes your car to stop randomly in the middle of traffic which could cause you to get into a car accident or worse death. nissan knows that this is a common issue but they choose to ignore the problem. i have spoken with many dealers and auto repair technicians and they all agree this is a common problem with nissan altima. this is sad and i really wish this issue is resolved for the saftey of everyone driving. i was driving in my car with my niece when my car just stopped in the middle of traffic scared me to death!!! because we could have been really hurt and the simple fact that i replaced this part 3 months before this occured is really terrible. i have replaced both sensor and i'm still having an isssue. this is something that nissan needs to correct before someone really gets hurts. the 2002 nissan altima is a horrible car its just manufactured all wrong and is constantly giving me issues.

Tl- the contact owns a 2002 nissan altima. the contact stated he took the vehicle to the dealer for the crank shaft position sensor recall, but the repair didn't correct the failure. on october 19, 2010 when he attempted to start the vehicle the crank sensor failed. the dealer was contacted they advised the failure could be the crank shaft position sensor. the vehicle will be towed to the dealer. the manufacturer took a report 69622767 they advised they only pay for a recalled once, he will be responsible for the repair cost. the failure and the current mileage were 60,000. li

The front two windows in my nissan altima roll down, by themselves, everytime i take my key out of the ignition! i have tried taking the batteries out of both of my key fobs, thinking maybe there is a short or something wrong with my key fobs, but my front two windows still roll down. i called nissan to ask them about this problem, and they said, they have never heard of this problem. i have not taken the car to nissan yet to get it repaired, because honestly i can not afford to pay 100 dollars an hour to have the car sit on the machine to test it, then how ever much it is to fix the problem, which could run into thousands of dollars.

I was on vacation, driving to cleveland, oh with my wife & parents on 6-13-09, sat in 2002 nissan altima, 2.5 sl. around 9.00 pm, on i-80, apprx 40 mil from cleveland, suddenly smoke started coming from the car hood, causing poor visibility. temp and oil level indicators did not show any sign of problem with the engine. after narrowly escaping crash with other vehicles by grace of god, we could stop the car with smoke still coming out. by the time i moved everybody away from the car, the smoke stopped. this sudden failure of the engine could have been more disastrous, endangering precious lives. on cranking the engine, loud noise from the engine made us believe that car was in bad shape, so car was towed to nissan of north olmsted, oh (dealer). after inspection on mon, 6/15/09 i was informed that the engine casting had a big hole apprx 2 big. we were asked to either scrap the car or replace the engine with estimated cost of $4500. we were not told any good reason for this engine failure. being stranded with my family for 3 days and despaired, i decided to replace engine hoping to get compensation from nissan. initial positive response from nissan customer affairs became very dissatisfying and frustrating after i paid the dealer. it was a shock to us that after calling so many times nissan did not took any responsibility stating on 6/24 that the vehicle is outside of manufacturer's warranty later i found many publications stating that 2002, nissan altima-2.5l engines have faced similar engine failures but nissan has not done enough to avoid such incidents. irresponsible behavior like this is not expected from such a reputed org. there had been multiple recalls on my car including engine sensor kit and engine cooling system. i would like to request you to look in to this matter so as to contain further damage to precious lives of people at large. i further request you to impress upon nissan to reimburse us for total cost of replacing engine and mental agony. *tr

Just commuting to work and using my car for leisure; however, every other month i have to put oil into my car because the oil light comes on. this is with me doing my quarterly if not earlier oil changes. my 2002 nissan altima only has 73000 miles and is consuming oil and now has begun shaking when at a stop and shakes even more when the a/c is on. i've had it checked out and have been told it need a new engine because the oil has to do with the engine and the shaking they can't figure out what is wrong with it. nissan refuses to take ownership in this mechanical error. i've been doing research and i see that i'm not alone in this costly situation. it's hard for me to trust nissan when i feel as if they refuse to listen to the consumers. *tr

I could hardly believe the number of complaints i have read regarding the 2002 nissan altima. one would think that nissan would recognize these complaints and simply recall the entire vehicle. when we purchased the vehicle in late 2001 it was called the car of the year. wow! my altima has been in the shop more than in my garage in the last month. this time they have had it for more than a week and still can't figure out why it won't start. you name it -- everything that can be replaced, with the exception of the motor itself has been replaced. from the fuel pump to the crank position sensor, the ecm, the throttle position assembly -- and still it won't start. it began with a check engine light and now that doesn't even come on. the vehicle has 152,400 miles and until such time as we can get it started we can't even get rid of it. i am terribly disappointed and want to report this to the texas attorney general and whoever else will listen. nissan needs to do something!!!!!! *jb

In 2003, nissan conducted a recall of 2002 altima's, ref #03v-084, in which they were to correct a fire hazard resulting from engine damage caused by a failure of the catalytic convertor. on 9/8/03, a nissan dealer completed repairs under the recall. over the last year, my vehicle had very high temperatures under the hood and began consuming excessive amounts of oil. in august 2006, the 'service engine soon' light came on and an independent mechanic advised me that the catalytic convertor had failed and was the probable cause of the excessive oil burning. i took my vehicle to a nissan dealer who performed an oil consumption test. the vehicle burned 2 quarts of oil in 600 miles and advised me the engine was most likely damaged and would need to be replaced. i contacted nissan and they refused to complete any diagnostics or repairs to the vehicle. i have had the catalytic convertor replaced again and the interior surfaces of the convertor installed as a result of the recall are clearly disintegrated. i have the old part available for inspection if needed. the repairs nissan completed in its recall did not resolve the defect and are a continuing safety hazard. *jb

My 2002 nissan altima stalled in the middle of a residential area for no apparent reason. the engine line, battery light and all other lights including headlamps, and hazard lights were blinking erratically or stopped working altogether. i called for a tow and asked the tower to check the battery and see if a jump would fix it. the car started again after the jump. i head off towards home. the car started losing power. luckily, i made it home as the car stalled while in motion. if that would have happened on the freeway, my fiancee and i would have probably suffered an accident. there was somewhat of an unusual smell like burning plastic. upon closer inspection, the low beam headlamp was burned through, but the source of the burning smell was coming from under the vehicle. there appeared to be a small fire, judging by the amount of smoke coming off from under the car, that may have stopped shortly after the car stalled. *jb

I have a 2002 nissan altima 2.5l. my car receives regular maintenance every 3 months and/or 3,000 miles (documentation can be provided), it never sits longer than 2 or 3 day, and it's driven on the highway for my work commute. twice my car suddenly wouldn't start without warning. the first time it was fixed, which was around april, there were several recalls for my car. one was for the fuel pump screen and the engine sensor that would cause the car to not start or suddenly stop running. this second time (10-24-05), my local mechanic showed me a 6-page service technical bulletin that was issued by alldata for my non-starting problem. the document suggested replacing the starter, adding a nissan brand fuel injector cleaner and/or reprogramming the computer to fix the problem. this second repair will cost me about $500 to fix when i pick up my car tomorrow. i thought the recall repairs would resolve this issue, but those repairs proved to only provide a temporary fix, but not resolve the underlying problem. since there's a service technical bulletin about my non-starting issue, 2 recalls related to this same problem, and i've had the same problem happen twice, i think my car should be recalled. i'm fortunate that i wasn't driving the car when it stopped running or that could have caused a serious accident. i should not have the same problem happen twice in 6 months. if my car fails to start twice in 6 months and the recall repairs don't remedy the problem, then there must be something else causing the problem. i'd hate to find out in a few months that the $500 start replacement wasn't the culprit, because i'd be back at square one. please tell me how i can get this issue escalated to a recall status or what i can do to prevent a 3rd failure. thank you, jenny r. baker. *jb

This car has been a lemon since day one, in and out of dealership for one reason or the other, it started with the car running hard, dealership told me it was because i have broke the car in and now this is how they run, took it back again 3 to 4 more times with same problem, told them car idles high, shifts bad, runs bad, they said nothing wrong, i do alot of highway miles and as soon as i was over the miles and out of the warrenty they told me that the motor mounts were gone only 800 to get fixed, i was then hit by a car head on and really hurt i suffered major back problems , come to find out i probaby could have prevented some of the damage to my self if i had a saver car, my air bags didn;t deploy. i have had every recall to this car , the service men at the dealserships are the rudest men i have ever delt with. i was right the whole time !!!!! i have also experienced the same thing with the lights cost around 800 to fox kept changing the lights not to mentions the tickets i recieved from the cops , i explained to them the light keeps going out, they are like this is a 02 that doesn't happen, if they only knew!!! i am really tired of this car , now i was just told that the car has another problem, it over heats they think it might be the therostat but they don't know. how much money will that cost me??? i am one angry person when it comes to this car!!!!!!!*ak

Scheduled recall work on car on friday, was notified that there was actually three recalls on my car (which i have owned for about a year, purchased used) thet needed to be done and that i need my 30,000 mile service done. $476 and later that afternoon, igot my car back. i noticed that the braked seem a little tight, but figured that was part of the service. the next day, saturday, while merging from one freeway to another at about 65 miles per hour, car sounded like it caught a piece of thin metal under front right quadrant of car, after about 15 seconds noise stopped and nothing in road behind me. i notice my brake light came on. when i tried to change lanes, i realize i had lost the power steering function, the brakes lad loosened up (but functioning) and the air conditioning was now blowing hot air. i realize i had no idea where the hazzard lights switch was and niether i nor my passange could find it. after 2 more minutes passes going up a slow incline, the car started jerking at round 55 mph. at this point the battery light came on, as well as, the service engine soon. well no kidding, service engine soon! pulled into the emergancy lane and dropped my speed to below 25 miles per hour and the car stopped jerking. fortunantly, i was just one mile from home at this point. limped home and call dealership. the car had been towed to crown nissan in birmingham. i was annoyed that the service man that took my call showed no empathy when i told him what happened on the fastest freeway in town . additionally, i was angered by the receptionist when she came back to me from being on hold and knowing my perdictment, laughing and asking who i was on hold for. *ak

On different occasions, 08/07/03 being the latest, my car has stalled, or shown poor accelleration while driving. it has happened while driving over 65 mph, soon after starting the car and putting it into drive, and a small time period after driving it. on one occasion i exited out of a parking lot onto a busy two-way traffic road, to cross to the other side and it stalled while there was oncoming traffic. i was very reluctant that the traffic speed wasn't high, for they may not have had the time to slow down. i have taken my car in several different times to my dealer, and other car maintenance shops, and they say that they can't find the problem, and in order to fix the problem, they must duplicate it. but the problem that comes from that is, it doesn't happen on a recurring basis. it can happen hours apart to 2 months apart. it gives no warning, and it goes back to running normal as if nothing has ever happened. the first time it happened was approximately 3 months after.*ak

Went out in the morning and the car would not start. tried all day to get it to start and finally had it towed to the dealer. the next day the car started without problem and the dealer says they could do nothing as long as the car started. we were told it could be the air temp., which was about 40 degrees the morning that the car wouldn't start. if we would have dreamed of having problems with this car we would have never bought it!!

The first thing was the oxygen sensor. then the oxygen sensor again. the dealership fixed the problem. mext there was, and still is, the jerking transmission. when driving in rush hour traffic or driving on the open highway, the trans shifts hard comming out of first into second. i have taken this car into several nissan dealerships and to this day, no one has found the problem. they keep telling me that this is normal. i have driven other altimas including several rentals while mine wasin the shop and they didn't shift like mine. the next problem is those headlights. they have replaced one of my light asemblies an great river nissan but the other has not been replaced. next, there was the heater coil that leaked and it took almost 6 months to determine because it didn't leak inside the car. next there was the ignition coils that were replaced 2x within a week and still caused the check engine light to come on. after the ignition problem the mechanics at sterling mccall nissan told my that it was my sparkplugs that had hust been checked about 2 weeks prior at great river nissan in mississippi. i went back to the dealership and invited the service man to a nice long ride. after driving about 20 miles, i stopped the car and le it sit for about 5 minutes. the car started and he smiled. he said, see there is nonthing wrong. after explaining that he needed to let the car set for a while and then try to start it, he said that it is still going to start.after sitting for about 2 hours, i asked the service man to step outside and lets giv the car a start... to no suprise, when i turned the key the car puttered, spitted, jerked, and everything else but started. it was determined the next morning that there was a blown head gasket that could have been caused by the catalyst that was just replaced due to a recall.
