Multiple times while driving between 30-45 mph the vehicle has stalled and not produced full engine power when pushing on the accelerator. this has caused serious concern for the safety of my family and myself. check engine light came on and i took the vehicle to nissan service repair (august 2011, ~94k miles). nissan ran diagnostics and stated that the circuit board for crank/cam sensors had failed. paid $430 to replace crankshaft and cam/crank sensors. fast forward to december 2012 (~110k miles) where i experienced the same exact issues along with reduced engine power when pressing on the accelerator. another local mechanic detected that the cam/crank sensors needed to be replaced again. i did some research and found out about recall #03v455000, which describes the exact symptoms that i have been having. i called the nissan service department that replaced the sensors in 2011 who said that my vin wasn't included in the recall so i didn't qualify. after reading the complaints on this site for this specific year/make/model, it is beyond me how nothing hasn't been flagged about this being an issue. all these people are having the same problems (multiple times) yet they are told their vin's don't qualify under the recall?? something is fishy there. other complaints with the same exact issue include the following numbers: odi id numbers: 10416743, 10384742,10370526,10342438,10332467, 10318898, 10318045, 10314479, 10283487, 10278805. thank you for any assistance or light that can be shed on this issue. *tr

The driver side door does not open from the inside making this a severe safety issue. the only way to open the door is to keep the key in the ignition, roll down the window, reach out and open the door, then close window, shut off car, and exit the vehicle. in an emergency it will be nearly impossible to do this within a reasonable time. this issue could result in further injury or death to the driver. *tr

My daughter was driving home from work in my 2003 nissan altima when the car suddenly stopped running, the steering wheel froze and she nearly ran off the road. thank goodness there were no other cars coming and she was able to pull off the road with no incident. i pulled the codes and found it to be the p0335 (crankshaft position sensor) and p0725 (engine speed sensor). after searching the web, it appears there are many people with the same issue. i looked on the nhtsa website and found nhtsa campaign id number: 03v455000, nissan recall no. r3022 that states exactly what did happen - the check engine light came on and the engine stopped without warning. the remedy is that a dealer replace the crankshaft position sensor. so, i called nissan, found the other recall that is related to the sensor, took the car to the dealer (barely - i drove and the car stopped twice - again, lucky there was no crash). the dealer called and said he could not fix this recall because the sensor was bad. now i have to go back and pickup the car and pray again that i don't have a crash coming home. seems totally unreasonable that nissan would have a recall for this exact problem - the crankshaft position sensor - for, among many others, 2002-2003 altimas and yet there are many people out there with these cars that nissan won't fix. i was laid off and certainly cannot afford a $300 fix for a $40 part so we will have to drive this death car until i can figure out how to get it fixed. and pray every time i get in it that we don't end crashing the car, hurting myself, my young twins, my older daughter or anyone else on the road. this is a severely dangerous issue and nissan should replace all cars - not just a select few.

My air conditioner has always been running even when the button has been off. i've asked the dealer many times over the years and they said it's fine. now about 2 years ago my airconditioner won't go on, it's intermittant but if it does go on it only works for 5 minutes. i finally paid the 129.00 to have it checked and was told the intelligan power distribution module has failed. this has been recalled in many other nissans but not the altima. during a search i found lots of other altima owners with the same problem. i tried contacting nissan but they don't care.

Vehicle has stalled - engine stopped - in traffic several times. the cam and crank shaft sensors are the cause of this issue and nissan refuses to recall these parts. it is absurd that the same parts have been recalled for other altimas built in the same year, yet several vins, including mine, were excluded. the recall for my vin was to reprogram the computer to prevent the failed parts from telling the computer to shut the car off. this recall has done nothing to prevent the issue. this is a safety issue, not only for myself and my family but also other drivers. this issue has been reported numerous times on the internet by other drivers. when will the nhtsa stand up for the citizens it was created to protect?

This situation has happened a few times; i park my car (turn engine off) do groceries, shopping, etc, come back, i turn the car on and the car is like stalling, like its idle but you can feel the shaking on the steering wheel. i didn't want to drive on this situation. i turned the engine off, turn it back on and still the same situation. i have to wait 3-5 minutes with engine off, then i turn it on and the car starts working normal. there is no service engine soon light on the dashboard. this is happening time to time. at first i thought it could be someting with the gasoline in the tank, that is not the case because i left my tank almost to empty and load a new tank, different gas station and still does the same. i called the dealer where i bought it, asked for any recalls on my car's model/year. they say no recalls for this year/model. i started searching for similar problems and i read a few articles that the '02 models have been recalled for similar issues, also that the same '03 model in canada has been recalled and serviced for same issue. although i cannot prove that what i read is true, i believe this problem should be checked by nissan dealership maintenance centers since there is no alert signs on the dashboards.

2003 nissan altima stalls while driving. when i go in reverse and then put the car in drive the car continues to go in reverse. stalls when i step on the accelerator but speeds up when i step on the breaks, i have to repeatly slam my foot on the break to avoid hitting cars in front of me. the check engine light continues to come on, when it does the car stalls even more. i took it to a nissan dealership they gave it a diagnostic test. they stated that they entered a code for the sensors, but were not sure if that was the actual problem with the car. i have been taking this car to nissan mechanics since i purchased it in 2007 and it is still doing the same thing in 2010. the engine light continues to come on and it continues to stall. i do not feel safe in this vehicle.

Car was shaking while driving. i had the cam sensors replaced several days ago. i have researched briefly online and found other people have the same issue. other models on the vehicle have been covered on a recall; however, nissan altima 2003 2.5s apparently is not recalled in this area. this is a potentially hazardous issue.

Started approximately 2 years ago. driver and passenger windows won't go up all the way and if they do then they roll down all by themselves. they go up and down at all times of the day and nite. the car automatically locks itself whether the keys are in the ignition or not. you always need to have two sets of keys because if the window is down and you reach in to unlock it the alarm goes off as if you are trying to break into the car. door that goes over the gas cap bent during regular use and would not close. nissan said there were no recalls on this item and just to take it to a dealer and pay to get it fixed. saw several other altimas of the same vintage with the same problem.

2003 nissan altima 3.5l v6 se - the door locks keep locking repeatedly. will do this while i am in and out of the car regardless of key fob use. my hazard lights flash each time. this has been ongoing for over a week and has increased in frequency and duration. it is now constant - going on every 3-5 seconds. i had trouble getting my daughter out of the car because the door kept locking on me. i worry about the ability to get out quickly if needed. it brings attention to my car throughout the night. i believe this is a safety issue on many levels. it has not been fixed yet. i have been told it may be the door lock actuators. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 nissan altima. while driving approximately 5 mph the check engine light came on and there was rust on the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for a diagnostic test. the dealer stated that the under carriage was damaged and that if the under carriage was removed the bolts may fall off. the dealer also stated that the fuel cap and the rear sub frame were corroded. all of the rotors on the vehicle needed to be replaced. the dealer stated that the state and ocean location may be a factor. the failure mileage was 42,000. the current mileage was 43,000.

I was driving my vehicle, 2003 nissan altima, at a low speed, when for no apparent reason, the vehicle died. it was during the evening hours. i was lucky the driver behind me didn't run into me. i was able to restart the car, and drive off. the car didn't do it again, but a week later, the check engine light came on. i took the car into the dealership. they told me the cause of the problem was a crank angle sensor. it was faulty and that's why my car died, without any warning. i found out that, nissan had a recall on this item. i called nissan north america inc and spoke to a person name david. david confirmed that they did have a recall on the sensor but it was only on certain years for the altima. i told david that maybe all the altima's with this sensor should be recalled and replaced. further investigation, i found a owner notification from nissan telling me that my altima, there is a possibility that the engine might stop running while being driven due to an electrical problem between the crank angle sensor and ecm. i took it to the dealer after receiving their notice. the dealer reprogram the ecm unit, but never replaced the sensor. i told david at nissan that they should have replaced the sensor at the time when they reprogram the ecm. it was very scary when my car just died suddenly. i was very lucky i didn't get hurt. i am letting you know because i feel nissan should recall all their vehicle equip with this sensor. i was very very lucky not to have been involved in an accident. i told david at nissan that i don't feel safe driving my car anymore. *tr

We have a 2003 nissan altima. the service engine light came on one day and then it went off. a few weeks later the light came on again and we had it diagnosed and the code indicated it was electrical, battery, or crank shaft sensor. same day we got it diagnosed we went to start the car in the parking lot the car wouldn't start. we called aaa to have car towed. while waiting for tow truck we tried to start the vehicle and it started. we started driving car to get it to be repaired and while driving the car the car stopped running and my daughter had no control of the car. the steering wheel locked and everything. she pulled into someone's driveway. we called and had car towed to local repair facility. i checked the internet to see if there was any recalls and it indicated there was a recall on the crank shaft sensor. i called the nissan dealership in salem, nh and spoke to a gentleman in service and explained about the recall. he asked for the vin number and said there was no recalls. i disputed it with him and he said there was nothing he could do and that it would cost approx $100 dollars to diagnose and approx $125.00 per hour to replace plus parts. i then call nissan consumer service and they also said there was no recall on my vehicle. i again disputed again they said there is nothing they can do about the problem. i then had the car repaired at a local repair shop and they had to replace the crank position sensor (the recalled part). we picked up the car drove down the street and the check engine light came on again. brought the car back to repair shop and they had to replace the cam shaft sensor. i called nissan customer relations again about the recall and they stated there is still no recall for the sensor on my vin. she said that she could help us by refunding the repair costs. she asked where i had it repaired and i told her at a local repair center. she said i cant help you because i didn't get it repaired at a nissan dealership. they should of told me this. *tr

2003, nissan altima, 3.5l, 60,000 miles. january 2009, traveling in south florida traffic, all dash warning lights come on and car stalls. car restarts, hard, and is driven to ft lauderdale dealership. $100 diagnostic reveals crank shaft position sensor and 2 cam sensors need to be replaced. our son, service writer for nissan in texas, tells us the dealership has doubled the estimate and to keep looking for a mechanic (since car is no longer under warranty). tells us the maxima for this year has a recall for this but not the altima with 3.5l. we drive to a local mechanic, stalling several more times, in rush-hour traffic, he estimates $600+/- and we leave car for repair while i enter the hospital for breast cancer surgery. car is repaired when i leave hospital, huge bill comes out of my pocket, and nissan will not consider reimbursement, although many hundreds of these vehicles are experiencing identical problems! no recall notice was received, no notice of the ecm recall was received and the car is now sluggish on acceleration. car is meticulously maintained, uses only premium gas and otherwise a good vehicle to own. nissan's refusal to acknowledge this and dealerships gouging customers makes this situation even more distasteful! *tr

The failure occurred for the first time february 17,2009. i was driving down the road and the power to my 2003 nissan altima se 3.5 completely cut out. i was stranded in the middle of the road with a service engine light, the battery light, oil light and brake light all on. i tried to re-start my car and it would not start. i was finally able to get it into neutral. at first the engine turned over like it wanted to start but it did not immediately start. after the 3rd attempt it started up. i was able to make it to my destination 5 minutes down the road before anything else happened. i am very lucky and was not rear ended. when i pulled into my parking spot the same thing happened. this time it took about 5 attempts to get it to restart. the car was taken to our local repair shop and i was told it is a crank/cam position sensor. we replaced this item at a cost of $185.21. my husband did an internet search and found out nissan usa did a recall on 2002 and early 2003 nissan altima's for the crank/cam position sensor. i contacted nissan to find out if my car was included in this recall and was informed i was not. i explained to them that this problem is a hazard to motorists and it should be addressed by nissan. i was given a file #6422418 and that was all they could do for me. meanwhile i have investigated to see if others have had this problem and it appears to be wide spread among the nissan altima's and some maximas. it is also not just an issue with the 2002-2003 models but extends up to the 2005 models. most of the consumers have either made a complaint with nissan or the better business bureau-automotive line. nissan did make a recall on the 2005 nissan altima for the ecm which just resets the check engine light but still does not address the issue of the crank/cam position sensor. some of these consumers have spent up to $500.00 to get this sensor fixed.*tr

I have had the service engine soon light come on and twice i have had the crank shaft sensor replaced in the last 6 months. periodically my car will stall, sometimes when i am moving, and other times it is really hard to start. i have only 42000 miles on my car. i wrote a letter to nissan and have not heard back from them. i took my car to the local dealership and asked her about the 2006 recall i found on line and she told me my vin number did not fall under the recall and the problems i was experiencing were coincidental. that doesn't even begin to make sense to me. what can be done to have this ongoing problem resolved? it's obvious it is happening to numerous nissan altima owners. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 nissan altima. while driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle stalled. the contact shifted into neutral, restarted the engine, and drove to her residence. she called the dealer and was informed that the vehicle was not being properly maintained. later that week, the contact received a recall notice stating that the vehicle's electrical control module (ecm) needed to be reprogrammed. the vehicle was returned to the dealer and they reprogrammed the electrical control module. immediately following the repair, the vehicle stalled again and the power steering became inoperable. she returned the vehicle to the dealer and they reprogrammed the ecm for the third time due to consistent stalling. six months later, the stalling recurred. she called the dealer and was informed that the recall was satisfied and they were not liable for further repairs. a diagnostic test was performed at a local repair shop, which revealed that the crank shaft positioning sensor was defective. the mechanic informed her that the crank shaft positioning sensor was supposed to be repaired before reprogramming the ecm. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in any recalls for the crank shaft positioning system. the vehicle has not been repaired. the nhtsa campaign id number was unknown. the current mileage was 125,000 and failure mileage was 62,000. updated 10-30-08 *bf updated 11/03/08. *jb

2003 nissan altima stalled and would not start in traffic at 40mph. would not start for approximately 15-20 minutes. situation was dangerous but no one hit us. computer codes say crank position sensor and camshaft position sensor. if codes are cleared (and after vehicle cools) they reappear immediately at the stall point. time to stall varies apparently with heat. 2003 nissans are under voluntary recall for this problem. nissan says this vehicle is not covered by the recall. it seems to me that it should be. this is identical to the problem described in the recall. *tr

I have had my nissan altima 2003 since may of that year. starting a year ago i began to notice signals on my dash indicating check engine. i then was pulled over for a non working tail light. i had it fixed and a day later the bulb blew later. i changed the bulb three times before they issued a recall on that wire. soon there after the check engine light would come on again now the car would shut off while sitting at the light. i then received another recall notice on the computer chip which causes a faulty signal to the starter. i took that in to get fixed. a month later the car would begin to shut off while i was moving. i took it back into nissan, they exclaimed that there was nothing to fix. after the same occurence continued i then took it to other mechanics who would see that there was a faulty computer chip which needed to be replaced. in january of this year i paid about $1,800 in repairs and still the car would shut off while driving and i became scared to drive the car due to the severity. i then called customer care for nissan which exclaims that i would have to have the car towed to them , pay $80.00 again to see what is wrong. there is another recall on the nissan altima, pertaining to the computer which causes the car not to run. they deny this and i am left paying for a car that does not work. i don't know what else to do, but i have met other owners who are experiencing the same problem. *tr

I have a 2003 nissan altima that when driving will cut off. this occurs at least 4 or 5 times while driving. i received notice that the car is under recalled. after taking my car to a diagnostic shop, it was determined that the codes matched the recalled part. nissan dealership located at 2207 wake forest road, refuse to make the repair to the recalled part. the diagnostic test stated that the car was cutting off because of the recalled part and the dealership refused to make the repair claiming that i would have to pay first and then they would make the repair just in case other codes are found and if other codes are found i would have to pay to have them reset before they would fix the recalled repair. i have a daughter ( 3 years of age) and i am concerned that i will get hit causing both of us injury.

On or about jan. 20, 2006 while driving my vehicles' check engine light would come on and then the vehicle would cut off. we took it took it to fontana nissan for repairs. the car was returned to us on jan. 28, 2006. maybe 2 - 3 hrs. after getting the vehicle, we were driving to l.a. area and the check engine light came on again. we called the service mgr. at fontana nissan and he said to bring it back and they would look at it on the following mon. well, we never made it back because while we were in route home (fontana) i lost control of the car while it was shutting off on the 91 fwy. to the 605 interchange. after the crash, the car was towed and the insurance company repaired the external damages (body work) but the internal was not fixed. then in june 2006 while driving home, the car cut off again. fontana nissan said it was the battery. so we purchased a battery. i refused to drive the car because we feel that the next time we might not be so lucky. in jan. 2007 there was a recall on the nissan altima for the same problem we had and consequently caused the crash. we were being represented by a law firm but as time passed our warranty expired. i am very afraid to drive the vehicle. which i have not driven since 2006. i would really appreciate someone's help in this situation. *tr

In january 2006 i began experiencing stalling episodes with my nissan altima 2003 while driving the car would without warning stall. this occurred more than once and twice happened on my way to work on i95. the dealer was not able to identify the issue until feb 2007 (in the meantime i drove this unsafe car). in feb 2006 a sensor was replaced that had been causing the problem. i paid close to $2,000 in unnecessary repairs and was charged for a rental car. i found today that nissan is officially reporting my 2006 issue as a recall. while i'm very thankful that i was not seriously injured or had a car crash that resulted in anyone else being hurt by the unidentified recall at the time of my experience i would like to receive compensation for the funds that i paid and i'm not sure how you place a price tag on the car stalling several times and 2 of those times being on 195. i have received to date after months of working directly with nissan and prior to today's announcement finally that nissan is recognizing my issue as a recall and hopefully saving several future accidents and/or fatalities a small check for $550.11. which comes nowhere near covering the monetary lose i suffered forget the mental anguish of the car stalling with no warning. *tr

2003 nissan altima was at the dealer for the recall ecm re program , after that down hill , dealer told me the code also called for a catalytic converter , the car stalled 15 times, one time i had to stay over night on a fast food place. next day a mechanic changed the crank pos sensor , then called for another sensor similar on shape , then back to the dealer, this time the car accelerates for no reason , they try to charge me for the diagnostic(for catalytic aging) they told me it was not the catalytic converter (and i have that in writing) that i need a throttle ? chamber 959+ tax. finally i think i make a mistake going in on the first place or the same issues the 2002 altima had is repeating on the 2003 and nissan is waiting for something real bad to happen, by the way , i call them about 6 times and no real solution just passing the buck. *jb

Two days ago, my car stalled while i was turning left into a parking lot. thankfully, i was able to coast the car to a safe location since i am six months pregnant and unable to push a car. the car was towed to nissan of elk grove, where the next day they diagnosed the problem as a failed crank position sensor. i was upset, because i had the crank position sensor replaced last year after my car starting cutting out on me while i was driving on the freeway and the same dealer determined the crank sensor needed replacing. i had the dealer replace the crank sensor yesterday and assumed the problem was corrected. however, as i was backing out of the parking spot, my car stalled and i was unable to restart it. i promptly informed the service manager for nissan of elk grove, and he managed to start my car after with great difficulty. he drove it around for a few minutes and then informed me that the car almost cut-out on him a few times and that the rpm needle was stiif and acting strange. presently, my car is still at the dealer while i await an update on the cause.

The 2003 nissan altima recently started stalling for no apparent reason. initially it happened while at a stop light, then pulling out of a gas station there was minimal risk of an accident. then yesterday as i was driving down the road the car hesitated briefly before accelerating and then within seconds all power was lost. it took nearly 15 tries to restart, at which point, i parked it and had it towed to the dealership, who wa stelling me that there was no sign that the crank sensors need to be replaced, which was what i was told would take care of the problem), and therewas nothing they could do if they can't get it to repeat what happened yesterday. a month ago, i had ii at dealer when this problem originally occurred and the computer was reprogrammed. i was told that it took care of the problem in about 85% of the cases. i' was at a loss. i have only one car and i need it to be reliable. i could not take a chance of being on the interstate at rush hour in a car that might decide to stall on me. i have seen many complaints of this same nature ,and was wondering why no one seemed to know what the problem was. any help you could provide would be most appreciated. *ak

My wife's 2003 nissan altima died while driving down the highway. she had to get out and push the car to the side of the road with my 8 year son trying to steer the car. then the car would not start. when i arrived i got the car started and attempted to drive it to the local nissan dealership since the service engine soon light was on. while crossing the intersection to get into the dealership parking lot, the car died on me. i had enough speed to coast through the intersection and up to entrance to the parking lot. the next day the service advisor for the dealership calls me and tells me the car need 2 recalls ( one of which i knew about -headlights, the other was to reprogram the ecm. they would have to also replace the cam & crank sensors for $213 which of course was not under warranty. we have had the car for 3.5 years and it has 33,174 miles on it. after reading that the recall involving the ecm reprogram was to repair a problem that could cause the engine to stop running due to an electrical problem between the crank angle sensor and the ecm - electronic control module. it stated that the service engine soon light could come on, the engine stops running while driving and that this could result in a crash without warning! i called 1-800-nissan1 and logged my complaint that my wife (or myself) could have been killed and the very least that nissan could do was cover the repair under warranty. i received a call back from some kind of engineer type guy who gave me the 20 minute technical version of why nissan was sorry but tough crap on us covering this. i demanded to speak to someone else and was given your web address. i still say nissan knew this was extremely dangerous and should have made a stronger announcement sooner to get this corrected. they should be on the hook here not me!! *nm

On several instances the engine cuts off while driving. major safety concern. eventually, the check engine light came on. took vehicle to dealer, and dealer informed me of recall campaign to reprogram the ecm. also, they found error codes p0725 and p0335. they told me that i had to replace my crank shaft position sensor (at my cost -- this was not part of the recall). after the dealer completed the recall work, the car still stalled that very day on the way home. took the car to my neighborhood mechanic who replaced the crankshaft position sensor. check engine light was cleared by mechanic and has not lit up again, however, the vehicle has stalled while driving again. this sounds very similar to the symptoms which led to the recall of the 2002 nissan altima's. my car was manufactured in december 2002, but was not included in the 2002 recall. the 2003 recall only consisted of reprogramming the ecm -- which did not solve the problem. this is a serious safety concern as the vehicle still cuts out at random times in moving traffic. please investigate -- this is similar to hundreds of other complaints under 2003 nissan altima's that i found reading through the complaints on this website -- please connect the dots and make nissan own up to the problem. *ak

Tl* -the contact stated that she took vehicle to dealer to be serviced on december 26, 2006 under recall 06v242000 that she received from nissan. the contacts stated that since the work was completed for the recall to the engine and cooling system the failure happened again. she returned the vehicle to the dealer yet they refused to repair the vehicle again for free. they insisted that the current failure was caused by an oil leak.*ak updated 1/26/2007 - *nm

*tr

The electronic module that controls timing started to fail. the engine would stop for a second, and then start again. the dealer determined via a diagnostic printout that the module was about to completely fail. when i asked how the failure might impact on safety, he service adviser stated that the engine could stop dead while traveling in traffic. *tr

Recall on 2003 nissan altima 2.5l - electrical problem between the crank angle sensor and the ecm. my check engine light came on - i took the car to local dealership (central carolina nissan - sanford nc) and they refused to replace the crank angle and mass air flow sensors free of charge w/ this recall and stated these parts had to be replaced at a cost to me of apprx. $600 before they could perform the upgrade. i refused to pay this fee and took the car home and the next day it cut off while driving down the road and was able to steer it off the highway w/out incident. i managed to get the car home and called: nca dept. nissan n.a. inc. and was promised a call back by mon. 9/25/6 - ref. # 5477581. no one called and i've spent a couple of hours today 9/26/6 trying to get resolution and have now been promised a call back by the end of the day 9/27/6 from the regional office. i'm holding my breathe and i'm still not able to drive my car. rickey collins phone: (919)770-9670. *nm

I was at a stop light ready to turn left onto another street when suddenly my car stalls out right in the middle of the intersection. it took me a few times to get my car started again and when it fired up again i started driving away but my car would be having a hard time going as if it was starting to bog out. i later did a diagnostics test and got the code p0335 which ended up being the crankshaft position sensor. a few weeks before this happened, my car had the same symptoms but it wasn't as bad. it would just bog down like once in 2 weeks but this was the worst case scenario!. *jb

 1) events that have happened are that my service engine light has turned on and my car has turned off while i am driving it on the road. it has been dangerous for my family. the a/c has stopped working also. my car is a 2003 nissan altima 2.5 sl. 2.) i have contacted nissan to find out what the price is to have my vehicle checked and its too high. for a car that is only three years old and that i am still paying on i should not be having these kinds of problems. i took my vehicle to one of the auto parts to have the check engine light checked and was told that its the speed sensor and the crankshaft sensor but they do not guarantee anything. i went ahead and ordered the parts and now i will have to find a mechanic that is not too expensive to have the parts replaced. *nm
