The office of defects investigation (odi) opened pe11-020 to investigate possible brake performance loss due to brake fluid leaking from the master cylinder into the brake booster in the subject vehicles.a total of 237 complaints were identified by odi and nissan.the majority of complaints and warranty claims reported that brake malfunction indicator lamp (mil) illumination as the only symptom of a problem.only 12 complaints alleged any effect on brake performance and in each of these the drivers were able to stop the vehicles without incident.no crash claims could be attributed to the alleged defect. returned part analysis data provided by nissan showed that most of the master cylinders replaced under warranty did not have a leak condition.these replacements may have resulted from brake mil illumination due to pad wear.for most of the warranty claims, in a few cases where a master cylinder leak was found, nissan's testing showed that the leaks were extremely slow and would require thousands of miles or months of driving before brake performance could be affected.after an extensive study of replaced master cylinders for a presumed leak, nissan was unable to identify any concern with the parts or design of the subject components that could affect brake performance. nevertheless, nissan does recognize a concern with premature brake mil illumination and has decided to address this problem by conducting a voluntary service campaign covering approximately 1.17 million model year 2007 through 2012 altima vehicles (up to june 25, 2011 production, the date of nissan's running change for the longer life brake pad).nissan's owner letter for the service campaign states, as your brake pads wear over time, the brake fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir will drop and may cause the brake warning lamp to illuminate.
PE11020NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.05/23/2011Brake Master Cylinder Internal Leak
The office of defects investigation (odi) has received 20 complaints alleging brake master cylinder leakage in the subject vehicles, including 16 received since october 2010.two complaints allege a reduction in brake effectiveness.in the remaining 18 complaints, the only reported symptom was illumination of the brake warning lamp.seventeen of the complaints stated that a nissan dealer diagnosed the problem as a leak in the brake master cylinder, including several that indicated brake fluid leaked into the brake booster assembly.in addition, odi identified additional reports of master cylinder leakage in subject vehicles in field reports provided by nissan in early warning reporting submissions.in july 2008, nissan recalled approximately 169,000 model year (my) 2007-2008 nissan sentra vehicles manufactured from start of my 2007 production through february 22, 2008, to address a defect in the brake master cylinder that could result in brake fluid slowly leaking from the master cylinder into the brake booster assembly (recall 08v-311). nissan's defect information report identifies the defect condition as a gap in the internal seal groove in the body of some master cylinders.the report states that consequence of the leakage is reduced brake reservoir fill level, resulting in brake warning lamp illumination.continued operation with the warning lamp illuminated for a relatively long period of time may result in loss of one brake circuit (the recalled vehicles brake system is split diagonally, so one front brake and the opposite side rear brake would be affected). in october 2009, nissan expanded the scope of the sentra recall by adding an additional 10,586 my 2008 vehicles manufactured from february 23, 2008 through april 18, 2008 (recall 09v-431).a preliminary evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect.

The brake feels like it is sticking. when you press the break and release it, it feels like is it is not coming back all the way. also, when you press the break sometimes it stops or slows suddenly or fast, and other times it is normal.

Brake fluid leaking into master cylinder on 2007 nissan altima . brake warning light comes on in car and brakes acts as if it doesn't want to stop. took my car to the dealership sutherlin nissan and they explained it just needed a new master cylinder and there was a leakage. never mentioned a possible recall or anything. sad thing is 9 times outta 10 they were most likely aware of the issue and still charged me to diagnose the sympton. their greed to get paid 467.00 for the job itself , that they never went into details of what could happen or the dangers of continuing to drive the car, mainly what the car needed. i googled the issue and to my suprise i wasn't the only consumer affected. i never received any notices about this issue and now wants to know why. this is dangerous and deemed unsafe . i'm thankful my instances led me to google this issue because the dealership never mentioned it.

2007 nissan altima interior brake light kept coming on and carried the car to the dealership where the master brake cylinder was found to be leaking into the brake booster. this is a common problem as noted here: http://www.nissanclub.com/forums/2007-nissan-altima-discussion-2-5-3-5/298430-warning-master-cylinder-problem-must-read.html this could lead to brake failure if left alone. there should be a recall since this has happened to so many altimas. the sentra was recalled for this very thing, same years, 2007 and 2008. they share the same brake cylinder. please add this incident to your growing list of altima master brake cylinder failures.

My break light has been going on and off for a couple of years now on my 2007 nissan altima. i have the car 3 years now and the dealership addressed the issue by resetting the alarm and topping off the brake fluid. now, they tell me that i need to pay $560 to replace the master cylinder brake and if i don't it will fail and i could be involved in a fatal crash depening on where i am at when it happens. of course my car is just out of warranty. i see many complaints on this and the nissan sentra was recalled. why not th nissan altima. it's almost like they are gambling with our lives and taking care of the situation only after the warranty has run out. toyota apparently was not the only one with a brake issue!!

On 01/25/2010, i was driving from work and while i attempted to stop to a light, the brakes failed to respond. i couldn't control the car anymore. the car slid, and hit another car in the back, but because the speed was low, the damage was minor. after that, the car was frozen ; the police came and the car was towed to a nearby autobody shop; after the outside damage was fixed, the car was transported to a nissan dealership because the car was not drivable.(the soft ware was messed up,as the dealer told me).at the nissan dealership, the software was reset. they couldn't guarantee though that this incident will not happen again. i contacted the manufacturer and explained that this car had a general inspection less than 2 months prior the accident and the annual revision less than3 weeks prior the accident, and now, even the car was fixed the nissan dealer cannot guarantee that the system will not fail again. the manufacturer decided to sent the car for another inspection to the same nissan dealer that couldn't guarantee the safety of my car. at this point, i am afraid driving the car. *tr

Brake probelm light came on then went off after the car warmed up. my brakes failed to work, the pedal pushed all the way to the floor. come to find out the brake fluid has leaked out of the brake master cylnder. the nissan dealer said he has seen this before on 2007 altima vehicles. the brake problem light should have stayed on, this is very misleading and very dangerous to have the light go off after a while.

Brake light comes on after 5-10 seconds when i first start traveling at a very slow speed for about 15 seconds and then it goes off. i notice this always happens. it appears from the maintenance manual that the brake fluid is low and needs to be filled up. i don't see a problem there.
10/03/2011
Brake light is illuminating. investigation shows that the brake fluid level is low. i have filled the brake fluid multiple times but it continues to lose fluid. this complaint is being filed based on car forums on the web that there is a known issue with a faulty master cylinder. there is also an open nhtsa investigation for this issue.

My 07 altima has a braking problem. i push the brakes at any speed and it has a residual pop and jerk. it begins to slow down as normal and then it seems to catch again and it will jerk and become a extreme brake. i took the car to my mechanic and they replaced the pads and turned the rotors initially and bled the lines. that did not fix it. they then recommended that i take it to nissan and i did and they said it was the brake booster and i had that replaced and they realized that the master cylinder was leaking and they were both replaced but that did not fix the problem. my mechanic can not figure out what it is and it is a definate safety hazard but i have no recourse because i have to get to and from work. he has also contacted nissan and they told him that is normal for the altima's. i read that there are other altima's that have a similar type issues. i just want the issue resolved. i have a discoount on my insurance that involves my good driving and i can not apply that because of the breaking issue. my insurance monitors my driving and base my discount on my driving performance.

The first instance of an issue was the brake light would blink on and off in my car. i was told at the dealership that i simply needed to change my brake pads. after i changed my brake pads, the problem went away temporarily. the dealership then told me that i was simply low on brake fluid and they topped the fluid off. the light went away temporarily again. then i started to notice that my brake pedal started sticking when it was pressed. i was then told at the dealership that my break booster was bad and it needed to be replaced. i left my car at the dealership for repair. an hour later i was called by the dealership and told that they discovered my brake master cylinder was leaking and it also needed to be replaced. this is a dangerous issue with the vehicle and it needs to be addressed. i have read several other complaints of nissan altima owners having this issue.

Since i have gotten my 2007 nissan altima, there has been various issues/problems with it. one of my complaints has been the brakes. i was told by my dealership that the squeaky screeching noise is normal for all nissan's which i thought was a bunch of crap. through the years, no matter if replacing brake pads to calibers i should not have the squeaking still.
10/04/201195000
Brake light came on. added brake fluid and light went off. brakes became increasingly mushy and sometimes it appeared that brakes would not work at all as brake pedal went almost to the floor. frequently had to pump brakes well before intersection to make sure i was able to stop. took to dealer and spent $625.08 to replace master cylinder. it appears that nissan has known of the defect for some time and isn't concerned.

Brake booster was leaking into the master cylinder causing reduced braking efficiency and poor brake operation. brakes were also catching when releasing the brake pedal from use. low brake fluid levels in the reservoir were observed along with the illumination of the brake warning light due to low fluid levels. when fluid was topped off, the illumination light turned off, but brake catching problems continued. dealer replaced master cylinder and brake booster and the problem was resolved. dealer stated that the leak between the two components was the issue. i was charged approximately $800 for the repair.

On september 30th, 2011 i had to have my master cylinder replaced due to leaking. this was identified at the mccarthy nissan dealership in olathe, ks and replaced at the same location on the same date. approximately three months ago, noticed that my emergency brake light would intermittently illuminate while driving. this was noticeable during acceleration and the light would go off after i let off the accelerator or started to brake. i had the dealership look into this issue when i took my car in for a routine oil change. after the master cylinder was replaced i noticed that the braking was much smoother and more efficient. i have kept my vehicle well maintained since owning this. bought the vehicle from the dealership and have been the only owner.

I noticed around 55k miles that my brake light started coming on intermittently. it would go away if i pressed down the brake, and seemed to come on most while i was accelerating. i needed an oil change anyways, so i took it in and asked them to look at the brakes as well. they said my pads were fine. eventually the light started coming on more and more until it was on more than off. i started searching around and found that there were a lot of 2007 altimas with master brake cylinder failures where they start to leak. i went out to my car and checked the brake fluid, it was just above min. i stopped off on the way home from work, purchased some dot 3 fluid, topped it off, and the brake light hasn't been on since. it is my understanding though, brake systems are closed systems more fluid should not need to be added. i will monitor it to see if the fluid level goes down, but it appears that i have the same problem as everyone else with the master brake cylinder problems. apparently sentras have already been recalled for this, so i hope it is only a matter of time before altimas are. i really don't want to spend $500 to get this fixed if it is a widespread problem and equipment failure of nissan.

At 50,000 miles, the brake light warning indicator on my 2007 nissan altima 2.5s began intermittently illuminating on the dashboard. upon depression of the brake pedal, the light would turn off. at first, the warning light did not illuminate again after another week of driving. however, during the next several weeks, the brake warning light illuminated intermittently again and again during driving. now, it is on almost all the time unless i am depressing the brake pedal. the brake fluid level is just north of low. so, perhaps refilling the reservoir will correct the issue. additionally, my pads are fairly worn and simply may need to be replaced. however, i have seen dozens of similar complaints online that indicate the master brake cylinder may be failing, and that is my chief concern. i have no difficulty stopping the car at this juncture. but, i have noticed that, if i depress the brake pedal just before starting the car, the pedal demonstrates a considerable amount of mechanical resistance. the amount of demonstrated resistance is directly proportional to the duration between engine starts (e.g., if the car sits for a few hours, there is minimal pedal stiffness. however, if the car is not driven for three days or more, the pedal is nearly impossible to depress until the engine turns over). i am uncertain if this is a related issue, but it is worth mentioning.

I noticed a leak on the garage floor and a flashing on/off of the dash board brake warning light. i am taking it into the dealer today to have it checked out. i have a fear of a master cyclinder after reading about all the complaints for this make/model. concern as well due to recall summary research about the defect investigations related to altima brakes. nhtsa campaing id # pe11020

After noticing my brake light coming off and on at random times of driving i decided to have the issue checked out. i have been informed that the cause of the problem is from my master cylinder leaking. i'm extremely disappointed at the fact that the cost of the repair is so expensive. after doing some research i have found this to be a common problem with the 2007 nissan altima model and i'm highly suggesting a recall be issued as soon as possible!

Master cylinder is leaking. requires topping off to max line every 2-4 weeks or ~200 miles. no pressure loss yet (brake fluid has not dropped below minimum yet). vehicle had ~27,xxx at time of incident, and currently only has ~28,000 since.

I was told when i got my oil changed at an express oil change that my brake fluid was a little low and to keep an eye on it. with in a couple days the brake light was coming on and then it would go off. it would do this on and off every time the car was driven. took the car to moore nissan in bessemer, al and told them of the problem. they checked out the car and i was told that i needed rear brakes and that my master cylinder was leaking. they showed me the leakage and i inquired as to what would cause the brake master cylinder to leak in a car that is only 4 1/2 years old. the tech said its actually a common altima problem. i said, really. i had the repairs made.
08/27/201185000
There has been no incident, but i have a concern of future failure. my car is losing brake fluid, as i've had to refill the reservoir periodically when the dash light illuminates. today, the dealer confirmed that there are no external leaks in the brake system, so it is likely inside the master cylinder. first occurrence of low brake fluid was at about 75000 miles. i am concerned that the corrosive fluid may be causing damage that will lead to a sudden failure in the braking system. i know there is an ongoing investigation for this problem, so i wanted to register my car as having the problem.

After the brake light was sporadically coming on and off while i was driving, i brought my 2007 altima into the dealership. the technicians diagnosed that the master cylinder is leaking. the car has just over 27,300 miles on it. the mechanic topped off the fluid and advised me to bring it back in in a few days when they had an open appointment. i am the first and only owner.

Was advised at the dealer that there was a leakage and that i could lose my brakes if i didnt change the master cylinder, the master cylinder was replaced, and i noticed a big difference in the brakes after this problem getting repaired.

I bought this vehicle brand new and it has been properly maintained. while driving down the road the vdc off and slip light came on. after turning the car off, and restarting the light would go out. this happened twice so i made an appointment with nissan, while driving there it came on again. the stated that my master cylinder was bad and needed to replaced, the cost was $620.00. this car was recently inspected and has not even needed new brake pads yet. i also have a problem with the tire pressure light coming on even when tires have correct pressure. i had to pay $ 50.00 to have it reset so it would not stay on. after doing some research this seems like a common problem, that nissan is doing nothing about.

Problem: master cylinder leaking into the brake booster. i was fortunate to have it discovered during a routine oil change appointment prior to any brake problems on the road. when i got home, i did an internet search to see if there was any information on this issue. in doing so, i discovered that the nhtsa had received several complaints and was investigating it. also, there had been a recall of 2007 nissan sentras due to the same component. this is a safety concern as well as a costly repair job so please add my complaint to your file. thanks.

On june 8, 2009 took vehicle into nissan north for routine maintenance, but also requested the brakes to be checked because they had just recently began to grind. with this service, nissan noted a complete brake inspection was performed and nothing was found to be wrong with the brakes. before i got home, the brakes began grinding again so took the vehicle back into nissan north on june 9, 2009. although, just the day before we'd been told nothing was found wrong with the brakes they charged us $100.00 to machine the front rotors. on july 8, 2009 took the vehicle back into nissan north because the brakes were now grinding much worse than initially. nissan said they could lubricate pads, but not much else. on march 19, 2010 took the vehicle back into nissan and they replaced the front pads and turned the rotors as well as replaced the rear brakes and turned the drums and rotors at a cost of $400.00 to us. brakes have squeaked off and on, especially when it rains and nissan says this happens sometimes? june 2011 the brake light began coming on when the car is started, and has continued to do so intermittently.

The brake light on my 2007 altima had been coming on briefly then going off again for extended periods for about three or four months. i had the car at the dealership for a transmission issue at 40,000 miles and mentioned the brake light issue as an aside. dealer then inspected and said there was an internal leak inside of the brake master cylinder and that it would need to be replaced at a cost of $460.00 i agreed to the replacement because dealer said that brake failure could occur if not replaced. my research indicated that others were having a similar issue with the faulty brake master cylinder with this make and model.

I have a 2007 nissan altima with only 23,000 miles. the brake light comes on frequently. sometimes it goes back off quickly, and other times it stays on for a while. i was told that the master cylinder needs replacing, but is not covered by warranty or recall. it seems like a very common problem that should be handled with a recall from nissan, they have already done so for the sentra.

Brake light on the dash keeps turning on when i accelerate and make sharp turns. called nissan and they told me that there is a brake fluid leak that needs to be addressed. the car is 3 years old. after searching the internet i saw that my vehicle is not the only 2007 altima that has reported this issue in the last two months alone.

My brake light on the console stays on for long periods of time and then turns off. i went to nissan and they told me that there was a leak in the brake master cylinder and with the part and labor it was about $450! my car is no longer under warranty but as i do my research online i find that this is happening to other nissan owners not only 2007 altimas. there is already a recall for the brake master cylinders for sentras. why not for altimas? it is clear that there is a issue and there is historical data to prove it. why do i have pay $450 out of my pocket when it is a know issue that nissan is aware of? do they want to wait till there are a lot of accidents before they do something about it? please investigate on our behalf so that nissan will remedy the situation and start a recall.

Brake light on dash comes on and goes back off occasionally. through research of other altima owners online, found a common issue of a leaking master cylinder. there is a recall for 2.0l sentras with a leaking master cylinder, but nothing for the 2007 altima, for a problem which is common to many people, often around or after the warranty period has expired.

While traveling approx 50mph approaching a curve brake pedal was depressed and car would not stop. driver noticed traffic slowing and reacted by shifting car to neutral and slowly applying parking brake. doing such caused car to fishtail and slide (as roads were wet) and caused a collision. driver has complained since 2007 to dealership regarding brakes and told each time (4 complaints) that nothing is wrong with brakes. brakes were replaced 6 months ago by dealership (customer paid) however brake issues still remained. such negligence has resulted in a car accident and thousands in property damage. *tr

We bought a 2007 altima (used) which still had all original manufacture parts on it. the second day that we had it the brakes started squealing. when i took it to the dealer they had it from 7am until i finally got it back at 11pm which seemed weird and upset me very much. they told me that all they needed to do was clean the pads and for extra help they sprayed some stuff on them to keep it from squealing. the next day started squealing again, so i took it back and they told me that they just found out that nissan's corporate tech's were trying to find out what caused all of the altima's to have this issue. then they wanted to put new pad on for me to see if it would help. i agreed and to bring it in the next day and i went home and marked the pads myself and when i took it in i asked to see the old pads when they were finished. when i went in and they showed me the pads they were not the ones i marked and they insisted that they were and the issue was fixed. and they said there will probably be a fix or a recall by next year and to just deal with it if it started squealing again which started as i was still in the dealers parking lot. please help. *tr

Brand new 2007 nissan altima took to deale r at 2915 for oil change and asked them to check brakes. they told me they needed to replace back brake pads. while waiting 6 hours they finally were going to let me take it, but the warning light came on. the mechanics were not sure what caused this and they needed the car to stay. at one point i was told the computerwas not doing what it was supposed to with the car. after several days i was told they would need to replace the wiring harness. needless to say when i finally picked up the car they only fixed the wiring harness. it had trouble starting as well. i wait several minutes checking to see that car was in park and brake pedal pushed in and pushed on the ignition with thumb, and nd it took several tries before car started. mind you this was a brand new car? very frustrated.*ak
