The office of defects investigation (odi) opened pe11-020 to investigate possible brake performance loss due to brake fluid leaking from the master cylinder into the brake booster in the subject vehicles.a total of 237 complaints were identified by odi and nissan.the majority of complaints and warranty claims reported that brake malfunction indicator lamp (mil) illumination as the only symptom of a problem.only 12 complaints alleged any effect on brake performance and in each of these the drivers were able to stop the vehicles without incident.no crash claims could be attributed to the alleged defect. returned part analysis data provided by nissan showed that most of the master cylinders replaced under warranty did not have a leak condition.these replacements may have resulted from brake mil illumination due to pad wear.for most of the warranty claims, in a few cases where a master cylinder leak was found, nissan's testing showed that the leaks were extremely slow and would require thousands of miles or months of driving before brake performance could be affected.after an extensive study of replaced master cylinders for a presumed leak, nissan was unable to identify any concern with the parts or design of the subject components that could affect brake performance. nevertheless, nissan does recognize a concern with premature brake mil illumination and has decided to address this problem by conducting a voluntary service campaign covering approximately 1.17 million model year 2007 through 2012 altima vehicles (up to june 25, 2011 production, the date of nissan's running change for the longer life brake pad).nissan's owner letter for the service campaign states, as your brake pads wear over time, the brake fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir will drop and may cause the brake warning lamp to illuminate.
PE11020NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.05/23/2011Brake Master Cylinder Internal Leak
The office of defects investigation (odi) has received 20 complaints alleging brake master cylinder leakage in the subject vehicles, including 16 received since october 2010.two complaints allege a reduction in brake effectiveness.in the remaining 18 complaints, the only reported symptom was illumination of the brake warning lamp.seventeen of the complaints stated that a nissan dealer diagnosed the problem as a leak in the brake master cylinder, including several that indicated brake fluid leaked into the brake booster assembly.in addition, odi identified additional reports of master cylinder leakage in subject vehicles in field reports provided by nissan in early warning reporting submissions.in july 2008, nissan recalled approximately 169,000 model year (my) 2007-2008 nissan sentra vehicles manufactured from start of my 2007 production through february 22, 2008, to address a defect in the brake master cylinder that could result in brake fluid slowly leaking from the master cylinder into the brake booster assembly (recall 08v-311). nissan's defect information report identifies the defect condition as a gap in the internal seal groove in the body of some master cylinders.the report states that consequence of the leakage is reduced brake reservoir fill level, resulting in brake warning lamp illumination.continued operation with the warning lamp illuminated for a relatively long period of time may result in loss of one brake circuit (the recalled vehicles brake system is split diagonally, so one front brake and the opposite side rear brake would be affected). in october 2009, nissan expanded the scope of the sentra recall by adding an additional 10,586 my 2008 vehicles manufactured from february 23, 2008 through april 18, 2008 (recall 09v-431).a preliminary evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect.

I had noticed months ago that the brake performance was not up to par, but as conditions were generally dry, it was not a problem. i did have new rotors and pads installed at 50,000 miles, but had no better brake performance. as soon as we experienced snowy/icy conditions it became a problem as the vehicle would then slide with the brakes locked, even though snow tires were installed. i then determined that the rear brakes were not working at all, and the hash marks from manufactures grinding on the new rear discs was virtually untouched. the rear brakes were bled, and there was no evidence of air in the line which pointed to a problem upstream. with the rear of the car raised and the brake pedal fully depressed, the rear wheels could still be turned by hand. there is evidence that the master cylinder is weeping at the booster. *tr

To whom it may concern, i wrote this letter to consumer affairs and to the ceo of nissan: dear [xxx], my name is [xxx]and i am a current owner of a 2008 nissan altima. for the past three weeks, i have been dealing with nissan's west coast regional office in regards to issues i have been experiencing with my car. i have been treated very poorly and i am astonished and disgraced by both one of your nissan dealerships here in los angeles and by your corporate representatives. as a leader myself for one of the most valuable company's in the world, i have found myself at a loss for words. [xxx], a man who has been empowered to make decisions for nissan, stated by brett locher, his supervisor, has decided that nissan should not fix the issue that i have been experiencing since the first day i leased the car. i was lied to by the sales representative that my vehicle had temporary battery issues. later on in the year, i experienced similar issues. i was advised by your dealership in glendale, ca to pay for a new battery exchange. after purchasing the vehicle, i experienced the same issues until recently when my car became inactive to the the start/stop ignition switch not responding with the brake harness. although i advised your representatives that i have been experiencing this problem way before my vehicle was out of warranty, they continued to explain to me that they would not be able to fix the car without charge because now its out of warranty. the car has around 29,000 miles and has never needed service. i am disappointed from an ethical standpoint and i would like to have my car fixed. it's time for nissan to stop serving crackers and cheese and begin to serve caviar for customer retention. [xxx] class action lawsuit is needed! many people are experiencing these problems all over the net. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

The push start engine ignition depends upon pressing the brake pedal to start the vehicle. the engine would not start because the brake pedal could not be pressed completely in order for the push start to operate correctly. this has since occurred multiple times. we must push the brake pedal a number of times in order for the vehicle to start. according to the auto dealer they are not aware of any problem but upon search of the internet i have found many cases of similar problem. nissan dealer offers to replace the brake part at a fee. request that nissan take responsibility for faulty brake button that appears to be causing this problem on many nissan altima vehicles.

I have 2008 nissan altima 2.5 s which has push button start. i.e. person has to push button and press brake at same time to start the engine. there is a switch / sensor near brake pedal which sends signal that brake has been pressed (and also turns on rear brake lights). one day, all of sudden, when i tried to start car it didn't start. it keep saying press brake (accessories / radio etc all turn on). so the cycle of accessories - on- off kept on happening. i thought battery is weak and even tried jump start. so, after trying pushing brake + button for 30minutes , car finally started. this happened 2-3 times and i got very frustrated....finally i started reading online about this problem. many people have posted same complain / issue. they suggested to check whether rear brake lights turn on when i press brake or not.. if not then the switch is bad .. i saw many people were able to fix problem by replacing switch ($50 expense). i did the same and car has been working fine since then (2-3 months). dealer tries to charge $150 only for switch and then $500 for other stuff to eliminate root cause of issue.. as many people are effected by this issue, i firmly believe that nissan should recall and fix this issue at their cost. dealers are making tons of money off 2007-2008 altima owners. *tr

My name is fatima owodunni, i am reporting an accident i had with my nissan altima 2008 on 7/28/09. it happened in the parking lot of bed bath and beyond @ owings mills md when i tried to park the car. i put the gear in a reverse mode to back up into a space but instead of the car driving backward it went with such an unimaginable speed forward, i slammed on the brake to stop the car instantly but the braked failed. i then crashed into 3 other cars and one person injured due to the crash. i reported this issue to nissan na but they refused to accept negligence. i told police officer what had happened but didn't believe me and he wrote in his report that maybe i pressed on the gas pedal rather than the brake but i was the only one that knew what had happened. nissan na rejected my claim saying the investigation didn't reveal that anything was wrong with the car. please help, i'm still driving the car but i drive in fear anytime i'm behind the wheel. thank you! *tr

Brakes were making a noise for a 2nd time; already replaced once when i told abc nissan phoenix, az (where purchased) that at speed less then 25 mph my brakes were making a noise. the other day went to brake at 14 mph in very heavy traffic on the freeway during rush hour and brakes locked up and had to use the emergency brake to avoid a collision (mind you i was one car length behind the car in front of me). i am afraid to drive my nissan altima now!! this is ridiculous. *tr

Stepping on brake pedal intermittently fails to activate brake-lights,which also inhibits starter.if brake lights don't work once vehicle is underway that is a safety hazard. i have been repairing thing for 50 years and am 99.9% sure the pins of the brake pedal switches are hanging up inside the bores, since wedging snow scraper against brake pedal and pushing plungers until they popped all the way out allows starting. phoning a nissan dealer's parts department confirmed availability then gave me a price of $39.17 for switch(es). not looking forward to hunching under the dash,i talked to service to find out how much to install.an improved brake wiring harnessis needed for rare occurances at cost of $238 and labor of $149.when i asked if this might be a recall or under warranty he saidcould not make any money that way. if it is a design/construction problem nissan should eat the cost.internet search has some dealer reccomending pushing harder on pedal or pounding-pulsing.some replaced switches showed pitting of contacts{too much current too often?} do dozens of cars have to get rear-ended before action takes place??????????????????????? or does my wife have to have a heart attack because the car won't start and she will lose her job?

Brake light began going on/off intermittently starting on january 10, 2012. definitely more common on days with temps at freezing or below. light would eventually go out once car warmed up, but would come back on after using the brakes to slow down or stop. brakes did seem to stop okay, although there were a few times very recently that they made an unusual noise. checked/added brake fluid several times over the past two months. had car serviced at local nissan dealership last week and was told that master cylinder needed replaced due to a leak. cost was $100 out of pocket -- remainder covered under extended warranty as my vehicle now has 41,494 miles on it.

Dealer discovered that the master cylinder was leaking brake fluid out the back of the cylinder into the vacuum housing. the leak was not noticeable on the ground or on the motor. hadn't noticed that the brake pedal was getting lower and lower. there is a small brake light on the dash. the light was on and had been on for some time. it's the same light that comes on when you apply the parking brake. this masked the seriousness of the problem as we thought there was an adjustment needed to the parking brake pedal and instead the master cylinder was leaking.

While driving, and even a few seconds right after stopping, the brake light continues to stay on, sometimes blinking. after checking that my pads were still in good shape, i did some research and found a lot of altima owners that were having issues with their brake master cylinders. i checked my mc but found no visible signs of leakage. however, i noticed that my fluid level was on the minimum line. after having a certified mechanic look at it, he advised me that the mc was faulty and was leaking into the brake booster. after reading that are more than hundreds of documented cases, and possibly thousands of undocumented cases, i feel that nissan has an obligation to inform their customers about the faulty brake master cylinder and replace the faulty part free of charge.

Purchased used nissan altima 3.5 v6 engine vehicle with 18k miles on 10/29/11. on a couple times before when slowing down to brake the car felt as if i was no longer in control of it and accelerated. however on 11/14/2011, i slowed down to stop at a busy intersection. i applied the brake as usual slowly to come to a complete stop and the engine began to rev up and made an increasingly loud noise. the vehicle felt as though it wanted to move forward in to oncoming traffic. the harder i pressed the brake the more it revved up. my foot was not on the accelerator at any point. after the light turned green, it lurched forward and i immediately drove to the dealership where car was purchased less than a block away. the service man placed it on the computer and all kinds of red lights flickered. he said something is wrong but we don't no what. they seemed to be at a lost. finally i was told they needed to drive it to try to recreate the occurrence. car is still at the dealership after 3 days. they have given me a car to drive. i am so disappointed in this purchase. certified vehicle with a wrap around service warranty will hopefully save us expensive repair bills. in any case i don't want to drive it anymore because i don't feel safe at all. i want to trade it and request a buy back if this matter is not resolved. having the mechanic tell me there is nothing wrong is just not acceptable because we could have lost our lives. our 11 year old son was in the car with me and was very frightened. no car is worth the risk of driving dangerously.

I have a 2008 nissan altima 2.5s. at around 33,500 miles i noticed my brake light coming on. i promptly took the vehicle to my local nissan dealership and was informed that my master brake cylinder had a leak in it. i was told it needed to be replaced and the warranty on it expired at 30,000 miles. i was quoted a price around $450. bewildered by the cost and upset that they wouldn't cover it so close past warranty i left and had a friend who works at a auto repair shop replace it w/ a genuine nissan part for $240. i ate the cost of repair thinking it was bad luck and moved on. my altima is now at 78,000 miles and once again the brake light is coming on. i'm positive that once again the master brake cylinder will need to be replaced. i have visited the website http://www.nissanclub.com/forums/2007-nissan-altima-discussion-2-5-3-5/298430-warning-master-cylinder-problem-must-read-10.html and also saw that nhtsa has opened an investigation into this. i would like my altima recalled or to be compensated for both repairs.  Service brakes, hydraulic-foundation components-master cylinder : after a few days of driving with a brake indicator light coming on, crown nissan service representative indicated that the master cylinder was leaking into the power booster, lowering the brake fluid in the master cylinder reservoir. total charges were $684.55 to repair. this is a 3 year old car with 41,321 highway miles driven lightly. it appears to be a similar situation as the 2007 and 2008 nissan sentra and although the two models do not share the same parts, the manufacturer is likely to be the same. this should be a factory recall issue.

Brake light came on/off while driving. took vehicle to shop and was diagnosed as a faulty master brake cylinder. the faulty master brake cylinder was leaking brake fluid internally into the booster. this manufacturing defect should not have occurred with a newer model altima with under 50,000 miles on it.

My brake light kept coming on. took vehicle to dealership they immediately informed me that it was probably the master cylinder and that this was a frequent and reoccuring issue with the 2008 altima. they checked the car out and confirmed that the master cylinder was leaking and needs to be replaced. if they know about the faulty part then why not a recall as with the sentra?? $550 to repair an issue known by nissan to be a faulty part. that is just crooked.

This was a one vehicle crash (total loss) that occurred when the brakes would not work causing our car to strike a brick wall (also emergency brakes did not work). none of the vehicle airbags deployed except for the drivers steering wheel airbag which deployed once the vehicle came to a stop. the accident occurred at approx. 11:45 pm, 22 october 2011. no drugs and or alcohol were involved. the car was recently purchased from a lexus dealer and the same company owns a nissan dealership which confirmed that all nissan recall items were complied with. we have several professional photographs to prove that there is still something going on with the nissan altima 2.5 brakes and air bags to allow something like this to happen. i have personally tallked with mr. bruce york about this and left a voice mail with greg magno at their nhtsa office. my insurance company confirmed that this car was a total loss and the vehicle has been now been removed from the towing and collision facility here in indiana and sold to a parts salvage company. i was trying to have someone inspect this car before it was destroyed, but it appears that it is now to late to do anything about this.

I took my car into the dealership because my brakes seemed to malfunction sporadically, and around the same time a brake light indicator came on my dashboard. the dealership diagnosed it as brake fluid leaking from the master cylinder, and said my master cylinder had to be replaced. i saw on the nhtsa website that there is a pending investigation of 07 & 08 nissan altimas and a brake cylinder leak, and that the same model year nissan sentras have already been recalled for that same reason. i wanted to make you aware that i have also experienced this problem, which was a $550 fix.

I took my 2008 altima in for an oil change. about 1 week before oil change appointment september 21, 2011 my brake light would appear on dashboard--it wasn't a consistant and not every time i was driving car. i didn't even have to brake for this to occur. at dealership told them about issue and they looked into it. after servicing my car i was informed that my master cylinder was leaking and need to be replaced. i also needed back brakes. i was told that i should not drive car, because the brakes might not work. i was completed shocked!! i only have 27000 miles on my 2008 altima. of couse it was out of warranty and cost a good amount of money out of my pocket. i did some reseach online and noticed that there are numerous other people have the same issue with their 2007 & 2008 altima's. nissan has a recall for the sentra (?) vehicle that has the same issue. i believe this a manufacters defect and needs to be researched. i would appreciate this issue being looked into.

I recently having issue with my break light coming on and off at random times. which after reseaching online it appears to be a common issue for many others, with break leaks. i have noticed a slight difference in the break effectiveness, which causes concern for me. i have an 2008 nissan altima 2.5 se with roughly 56,000 miles. i bought this car used with only 22k miles roughly in 2009 and have other issues with electrical work in the radio. the radio has already been replaced by the dealership when it was still under warranty and now it is happening again where my volume dial doesn't turn the volume up or down it locks between three volume numbers and at times the screen fades in and out.

I had noticed for about a week that the brake light indicator on my dash board kept coming on. on monday 6/27/2011 i took my car to my local nissan dealer. there they diagnosed that the braking system's master cylinder and booster assembly had leaked brake fluid making the car unsafe to drive. they replaced with a new brake master cylinder, booster assembly, and other parts. the dealer made the repair and i returned to drive my car away on 6/29/2011. total cost with parts, labor, and tax was $608.62 . i have kept the receipt in my records. i had the brake light indicator go off several times from when i purchased it new to when this last incident happened. im assuming in the past they just topped off the brake fluid during regularly scheduled maintenance. the brakes had always been very touchy and overly tight to the touch. with the repair the braking system is not as tight but still very responsive. as a result of this slow leak over the years i always noticed that the brake fluid reservoir would be low as well and that did not seem correct for a new car. i purchased this car brand new and i am the only owner. since the breaking light indicator had been a normal occurrence many times i am surprised that my nissan technician did not thoroughly inspect the breaking system at some point in the past years. i was out of warranty due to the mileage and paid for the cost out of my personal funds. i am hoping if there is a recall i will be compensated for this repair since i am claiming this as the responsibility of the car manufacturer nissan and/or any other associated entities. thank you,

Tl-the contact owns a 2008 nissan altima. the contact was driving approximately 5 mph, and the brake warning indicator illuminated intermittently. the failure progressed to whenever the vehicle was in operation. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated the master cylinder was leaking brake fluid. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the problem. currently there was an open investigation associated with nhtsa action number pe11020 (hydraulic: foundation components: master cylinder). the approximate failure mileage was 26,000. js

Brake indicator light began coming on intermittently while driving. took the car in for service, found out the brake master cylinder is leaking and needs replaced. vehicle is a 2008 nissan altima and only has 41,000 miles on it. vehicle was recently in for maintenance service in december 2010, no indication of problem was given following inspection.

We have had to replace the brakes three time within the past 9 months.

The dashboard warning lamps dsc off, slip and brake indicator sporadically were coming on. the warning indications became more frequent. took it to the dealer, and they said it is the brake master cylinder leaking brake fluid into the vacuum booster. since the leak is contained in the vehicle, the leak is not apparent on the ground. if brake fluid gets too low, total loss of brakes could result in a crash. the replacement master cylinder is back ordered, and may take weeks to arrive. internet research shows that the leaking master cylinder is a very common defect. vehicle only has 30k miles.

Required to replace brake master cylinder due to leakage of fluid. the brakes began not working properly and the bake alert light came on. this is certainly not a component that should malfunction at this low mileage! there are many complaints about this problem on the internet(forums-blogs) and warnings about buying the 08 altima. nissan has recalled other models for this problem but the altima is not included. this is obviously a manufacturing failure and nissan should be standing back of their product!! brake problems pose a great danger to peoples lives. there may not have been any deaths associated with this problem, but is that what has to happen? in this economy wounding our wallets is harmful. between the internet and consumer reports nissan will hopefully pay for not voluntarily stepping up and taking care of their inferior manufacturing in a competitive market.

Master cylinder leaks on vehicle. has potential to cause loss of braking. has not caused any major failure at this time, but does require brake fluid reservoir to need a refill about once every 2 months (i.e. the brake light on the dash starts to come on while driving).

2008 nissan altima 2.5- i have been to the dealership over 9 times with break issues and had my master cylinder replaced once already in 2009 under warranty. my brake light has been turning on during acceleration and off when brake is applied. i brought it to the dealership today and was told the master cylinder has to be replaced again and the car is no longer under warranty and the work is not under warranty due to 12,000 mile agreement. obviously, something is seriously wrong here. i'm on the 3rd master cylinder in 2 and 1/2 years. there needs to be a recall for this cylinder; many people are complaining of the same problem.

2008 nissan altima. failed brake master cylinder at 47,000 miles. i took my 2008 altima 2.5sl to the dealer for service. one complaint is that my brake light comes on under acceleration. they advised that my master cylinder has a leak. due to the mileage on my car it is not covered by the warranty. i was advised that they see this often but most people are covered under the warranty because they have less mileage. i feel that nissan should fix this under recall. *tr

My 2008 nissan altima had squeaky brakes for months before dealership would admit there was a problem. first time i took car in about brakes was told that the brakes sometimes make a noise nothing to worry about. second time they told me they had to replace the brakes and both calipers on front.everything was fixed according to the service bulletin. i've noticed that my transmission makes a whinny noise when driving up grades. took it in and was told they couldn't duplicate the reported problem. go figure.. i wish someone would do us all a favor and recall this vehicle. please! we all have been ripped off by nissan! car has had too many problems from day one! regret buying it!! *tr

Vehicle rides unstable. sharp turns causes car to become unstable, loses controls of turn. tires or rims unbalanced. have vehicle seem many times and the problem can not be corrected. neither representative would confirm problem. told by american tires sale associate, nissan will not reimburse them for correcting the problems. they rebalanced the tires, but this did not correct the problem. advise right front tire problem, but they would not give a write up on the problem. my vehicle has had too many recalls. hanlees richmond hilltop nissan should have known about the many recalls, prior to selling this vehicle. march 26, 2009 had car in for servicing, driver seat broken, brake hardware damaged - brakes replaced. mileage at time of servicing 12,800. i had complained about these problems from day one. i spoke with the finance associate about replacing the car, but he refused.. i have noted from servicing order on march 26, 2009 - heat shield problem - high rpm on initial startup. antioch service advisor did not address this matter, because nissan has not issued a correction order on this as of today. this is a brand new car that has many problems from the first day of purchase! i have tried so many times to get help from the service center as well as nissan consumer services. not help!!! *tr

Drivers seat squirms moves and is not rigid. dealership says they can not replicate the problem. every time i turn the seat makes noise and sounds squirms like its not properly secure. the passenger airbag light also comes on when a fully grown adult is sitting in it. this happens randomly on an average of 4-5 times monthly. when the airbag light comes on the passenger airbag is deactivated not protecting the individual. there is also an issue with the brakes when pressed sometimes the brakes in the front do not grab properly and they grind badly causing the car not to stop as well . the dealership says can not replicate but stated they are aware of these problems and that nissan may issue a recall. for the time being the car is unsafe and nothing is being done about it. *tr

2008 nissan altima 7,000 miles front brake pads are too hard. they cut into the brake rotors and cause car to stop poorly. they also screech. when stopping. at 7,500 service shop turned the rotors but did not replace the pads, so the hard pads will continue to cut into rotors and make stopping difficult. my 20005 ford freestyle had similar problems and ford recalled and replaced pads with softer ones and cured the problems. numerous owners of 2007 and 2008 nissan altimas are having the same problem please investigate. *tr

I purchased a new 2008 nissan altima in march of 2008, after 2000 miles i heard the brakes start to squeak, i brought it to the dealership for an oil change august 8th and asked them to check the brakes, they did and told me that i needed to have the calipers replaced, i asked if there was a recall and was told no, there is a bulletin though. i thought that other owners should have this problem brought to their attention before the warranty is up and they have to pay for the repair out of pocket. *tr
