Defect SummaryNissan is recalling 204,361 my 2007-2008 altima, altima hybrid, 350z, 350z roadster, my 2008 altima coupe, rogue, my 2009 murano, and infiniti my 2007-2008 g35 sedan, my 2008 g37 coupe and ex35 passenger vehicles equipped with continental automotive systems' occupant classification system (ocs) control units. a varistor in the ocs control unit located in the passenger seat cushion may have been manufactured out of specification. under certain conditions, this could cause an interruption of signal between the ocs and the air bag control unit (acu).
Consequence SummaryThis could result in the passenger air bag being suppressed which could fail to provide adequate protection in the event of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will test the signal between the ocs and acu systems using a special tool to check that it is functioning as designed. if necessary, the seat cushion (containing ocs hardware) will be replaced with a new one manufactured to specification. the recall began on november 4, 2008. owners may contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261 or infiniti at 1-800-662-6200.

I have a 2008 nissan altima coupe and the passenger air bag malfunctions when i have a passenger sitting in the seat. i have returned it to the dealer 4 times and they test it with a 75# weight and say they can't replicate the condition. the problem becomes more pronounced as the passenger weight increases, so it malfunctions more frequently when i have my 185# son in the passenger seat than my 120# wife. *tr

The occupant classification system on my 2008 nissan altima coupe is not working properly. the indicator saying that the airbag is off is lit when there is a full size 150 lb person in the passenger seat. there is a recall out right now for 2008 nissan altima coupes but my vin number is not one of those being recalled. i have taken it to the dealership 4+ times and they keep telling me that everything is working according to specifications. i have talked to nissan and they said there was nothing they could do. this upsets me greatly because i don't have a passenger airbag for full size passengers. obviously there is something wrong, i told them that i would send a video of my driving with a full size passenger and having the airbag disabled. there is no way to over-ride this function. so i am stuck with either having a one person car or telling my passenger that if we get in a wreck that his airbag wont deploy. they continue to tell me my car is under the correct specifications but i have someone who is double what the sensor weight needs to be in order for the airbag to be enabled. i am stuck with a one person car, because i refuse to drive anyone knowing that if i do get in an accident they will die. i just want the problem fixed. both nissan and the service shops believe my story fully but they continue to say that until they can find the root of the problem that it cannot be fixed. so again, i am stuck. they ran all of their tests and they came back ok. i told them that i would like for nissan to buy back my car but they of course refused. i cant drive a car with no passenger airbag and yet they keep telling me that there isn't anything i can do! i am extremely frustrated and upset because i have found the problem before an accident had occurred but yet i cannot fix it. please help me. i have run out of options. *tr

I bought a brand new 2008 nissan altima in july 2008. i have had ongoing problems with the passenger airbag light turning on and off while i have a passenger who weighs 125lbs. when the light turns on, this means the airbag will not deploy. i've taken my car to the dealer twice for this problem and they said they can't duplicate it nor fix it. i've called the nissan consumer hotline number more than a dozen times and just seem to get the run around. i'm told my file was assigned to someone, but this someone can't seem to return calls nor answer my calls. i'm astounded that this problem with my airbag is not elevated to a priority status as there will be a very large lawsuit against nissan if my passenger is injured or killed due to the malfunctioning airbag sensor. please help. i feel totally helpless with this issue. *tr

The air bag on the passenger is not working. the seat cushion of the seat is the problems ( i was told). the cushion cost $900.00. the airbag has a defect in it. i looked on the world wide web and noticed several complints of the same probelm. there is a recall on some of the altama. this is a big problems.

Passenger side airbag light comes on occasionally even with an adult sitting in the passenger seat. dealer had replaced the sensor but the problem still occurs. this occurs on numerous occasions probably 2 to 3 time a month when seat is occupied. this is a major safety concern that needs to be addressed for the safety of passengers in the vehicle. i do not feel at ease when someone says that the system is functioning properly even though the light comes on.

Approximately the last 13 months i have noticed 2-3 times a week, the passenger airbag off light was on. on several occasions while this light was on, i drove by the nissan dealer (eastside nissan of bellevue, wa) and showed the light was on even with my wife sitting square in the passenger seat. the technican drove with my wife with the light still on. however, he pulled in some sensor and stated that the system should work fine even if the light was on. they stated that they tested the sensor last year and it worked fine so they are not going to do anything about it. i have called nissan usa many times and all i would get is someone telling me that they have to replicate the issue. based on nissan's position, i am holding nissan corporation, eastside nissan, and nhtsa liable for any injuries which result from injury from an accident and also pain and suffering and any additional distress, especially if the airbag or other safety system fails. the nissan airbag system can lead to a fatality even with an adult 150+ lbs. just prior to an accident. no part have been changed out and my warranty is about to expire with no action on nissan's part except for excuses of why they cannot fix the problem.

2008 nissan altima coupe 3.5se. passenger seat is occupied by 165# male and the airbag display on the dash shows that the airbag is off. one occasion the passenger repositions himself and the light went off. usually repositioning does not resolve the issue and airbag light remains off. the issue has occurred about 6 times in 12 months. *tr

The passenger airbag indicator shows the airbag to be off with an adult passenger in the seat. repeated visits to the dealership have resulted in nissan service stating the system is working properly, but repeated cases continue. *tr

Suplemental airbag light continue to stay lite though the system is said to be working fine. i took my car in for a service recall on the airbag system. the service writer asked the tech if the light turned off. i couldn't hear the far end of the conversation. i was told the system was fine. drove off the lot and the light is still on. when i went back the service rep said my airbag was fine and if i wanted the issue resolved i'd have to pay for a service inspection; though just 15 minutes ago it was in for recall repairs. the service recall even stated that if the light was on the system may be impacted by the recall. of course my warranty was up just 300 miles ago and i am really bothered by the fact they wont at least check it out since they issued a recall. i contact nissan usa, but they have not responded to my request and the local dealer was unwilling to assist.
