Defect SummaryOn certain pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, water may enter the rear axle housing due to inadequate sealing of the anti-lock braking system (abs) sensor.
Consequence SummaryThis can result in corrosion and eventual failure of the wheel bearing. if this occurs, the wheel assembly could separate from the vehicle increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the rear axle for water intrusion and any affected components will be replaced. the abs sensor will be resealed to prevent water intrusion. owner notification began december 10, 2003. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

 Tl* the contact owns a 2002 nissan frontier. while driving 70 mph he heard a loud bang and the vehicle swerved to the left. the contact noticed the driver's side of the vehicle was lower than the other. he inspected the vehicle and noticed the torsion bar failed. the dealer has not inspected the vehicle. the current and failure mileages were 78,000. *ak

 Vehicle became hard to control, regarding steering and just trying to keep the truck from drifting. discovered that the retaining nut had worked loose and sway bar was not secured to the right side of car. was repaired at the dealership.*ak

 Tl- the contact owns a 2002 nissan frontier. in 2003 the vehicle was in for a factory recall on the rear seals and one year later the left rear was leaking on the axle. then in 2005 the wheel assembly came apart from the axle because the seal failed again. in total the contact has had the seals replaced seven times and now the dealer is saying that the rear housing is bad. this started from the repair on campaign number 02v299000, which dealt with the rear seals on the axle. the failure mileage was 15000 and the current mileage was 210000.rl

 No follow up from dealer about nhtsa campaign number 02v299000. i called nissan to get more information because my abs sensor lights tend to turn on during rainy days. researched online and found this recall, asked to schedule my truck for servicing with no results, not even a call back. *tr

 Dt*: the contact stated since the vehicle was purchased there was a knocking sound under the rear of the vehicle when the brake pedal was depressed or when reversing at 3 mph. the vehicle was taken to an independent service dealer who replaced the rear shocks, but the noise continued. the service dealer inspected the vehicle 5 times and could not identify the problem. the manufacturer was not notified.
