Garage-kept since new 1999 nissan maxima has developed severe rust/body rot in the radiator support member which also attaches front engine mount points. this damage was caught during an oil change when the protective plastic shield was removed - which exposed the degree of danger. inattentive owners could miss this entirely and the engine could literally rip from the car over severe bumps! be sure to check under your radiator! *tr

Tl-the contact owns a 1999 nissan maxima. the contact stated that while driving 35 mph the vehicle stalled. upon restart, the vehicle operated as normal momentarily before stalling again. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the contact was informed that two oxygen sensors failed. the fuel pump and filters were replaced, but the failure continued. the mechanic examined the vehicle again and informed the contact that either the engine was not getting enough fuel or the computer system was faulty. upon examining the vehicle further, the mechanic noticed that a lot of water was being stored within the engine compartments due to a clogged hose. the mechanic repaired the hose and drained the water from the engine. the failure had not recurred since. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 182,000. the vin was unavailable. kmj

Tl- the contact owns 1999 nissan maxima. the contact stated the ignition coils are failing on the vehicle. the failure causes the check engine light to come and the vehicle looses power. the dealer ran a diagnostic on the vehicle and stated they could not find anything wrong with the vehicle, but when the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, they were told the three of the six engine coils failed. the failure mileage was 143,500 and the current mileage was 160,000.rl

I purchased a 1999 nissan maxima gle 4 door and the service engine soon light has been on. i took the car to a local auto parts store and had a cold pull performed and was informed that the spark plug on cylinder 5 was triggering the knock sensor resulting in the service engine soon light to be on. i went on the internet for more info about the knock sensor and the spark plugs for this car and seen more comments from other owners with the same issue for the same car. comments stating that they have replaced the spark plugs and the coils and it was only a temporary fix for the recurring issue. this is the first car i have owned and the previous owner of the car ensured that the maintenance of the car was up-to-date. for this car to be ten years old it is in excellent condition, (kbb value $4500), aside from the spark plug and knock sensor issue. will there be a recall to service the thousands of 1999 nissan maxima's with this issue? i can't afford to pay anywhere from $800 - $1,000 to have all of the coils replaced as well as the spark plugs, only for it to be a temporary resolution to the recurring issue. i am on a fixed income (ss) and after paying for medical expenses, car insurance, living costs, i cannot afford to pay for a temporary resolution. please recall the 1999 nissan maxima's, this is a common issue with this year and model car. *tr

I have a 1999 nissan maxima with the check engine light on. took it to the dealer and they told me that all 3 o2 sensors were bad, and they could be replaced for approximately $700. a week later check engine light is back on, and now they are telling me that it is the #3 cylinder misfiring, and they recommend replacing all 6 ignition coils for approximately $1200. i understand that there have been many complaints about the ignition coils, and really do not have the money to pay them again for something that i feel should be replaced by them anyway. *tr

Check engine kept coming on. machines kept telling us it was cylinder 2 misfire. we replaced fuel filter, sparkplugs, sparkplug coil with no results. went to dealer, they put car on machine. they had trouble finding problem. they had to search by hand, with no results. they told me it was an elec. problem that was intermittent. light went out without fixing anything. has not come back again yet. *tr

My 1999 nissan maxima se had one coil replaced in 2003. this year i replaced the alternator as well. my airbag light flashes constantly and my clock goes in and out of service. my service engine soon light came on and the car runs very rough. when idling it sounds like a choking piece of crap and on the hills the light flashes. i was told i had a bad coil again and took it for a diagnostic that said multiple misfire and replace all six coils. i have read complaint after complaint about coils. when i bought my maxima new i thought i was buying a car that was reliable but i am hearing that coil replacement is the rule not the exception. i also have rear brake noise....since year three of owning the car. i have replaced two sets of brake pads as well. *tr

I have a 1999 nissan maxima and have had the check engine light on. checked the code and came back with cylinder 1 misfire. dealer wanted $1,000 to try and fix the problem. i don't have that kind of money. as i was getting on the freeway lost most power out of the car and couldn't speed up to avoid an accident. fortunately nobody was hurt however if the dealer would have fixed their faulty part i am 100% positive there would not have been an accident. *jb

9/02 - within a 90 mile drive:tachometer, speedometer and temperature gauge shut off while i was driving at high speeds. air bag light was also flashing. then they would either turn back on by themselves or while i was standing still the speedometer would be stuck at 100mph. further into the drive engine would shut off by itself losing brakes and power steering driving at speeds 0-40mph. first we repaced the battery then took it to nissan where they found internal failure dash circuit board which was replaced along with the left side seat air bag harness. 1/03 - battery and brake lights came on. the car began sputtering and every other warning light was lit. then the car would drive fine and did not shut off. the alternator was replaced this time. 7/6/03 - speedometer, tachometer and odometer shut off for entire 2 1/2 hour trip. today 7/7 everything is fine (so far).*ak

With my 1999 nissan maxima se v6, egr valve related issues were detected and engine light started to come up soon after the ignition. according to nissan dealer, oxygen sensors and egr valves work is need that would cost $1800 or more. at that time the car mileage was around 80,000. i could not afford to fix that. but later one of the rod in the engine broken, fire started under the engine while i was driving at 70 m/h on the highway. my family was in a great danger and we were lucky to survive with the help of police and fire engine when someone called 911. there has been another complain about egr value on nhtsa web site by another nissan maxima owner. *tr

Car began idling very rough when stopped, almost to the point of shaking back and forth. when attempting to accelerate, car seemed like it had almost no power. same thing happened when climbing hills, to the point where car would almost stop and put driver in danger of being struck from behind by traffic in the same lane. had to stop driving car and bring to dealer. *nm

I am looking at $1400 to replace 6 ignition coils, this is preposterous, this is a known problem that should have been corrected. my car has less that 60,000 miles on it, and i have babied it and made sure only the best has been used on it. there are thousands of people complaining about this, and the problem remains. i am finishing this and writing a letter to my congressman and senators. i bought this car on nissan's reputation and knowing that they allow this to exist, i will never buy another nissan, period.*jb

I had this 1999 nissan maxima since year 2000. the following expenses i incur was replacing 6 ignition coils at the nissan dealer costing over $700.00 where they advise only one coil was causing the problem. recently after taking my car in for diagnostic because the service engine light came on, the check and replaced the egr valve three time(cost over $1100.00 for the first replacement), replaced the starter, fuel filter. now the same light is on right now. no one seem to know if this is a manufacture defect (yes , i believe) or what is the problems with missed reading test results. what's next replace the car? need help before i done replace this car or someone gets inquire because of dealer, manufacturer and technicians don't know the resolution. *tr

The first complaint is with my car pulling to the left since i got it. i brought it back to the dealer at least three times for this but it still does it. the guy told me that it was because the roads in new jersey are angled so thats what caused it and did nothing about it. the second complaint i also brought back all the times with the pulling of my car . the guy said it was because it was new and it will go away, but about nine months later it is still there but not as foul as before. *ak

I have a 99 nissan maxima se and i wish i had known about this website before purchasing. after reading the multiple and consistent complaints regarding the flashing airbag and check engine soon lights, i can't believe there has not been a recall. the defects reported are the same on each individual 99 maxima listed. my vehicle has 90,000 miles on it, no wrecks, regular maintanence as recommended and have spent way too much money on repairs for sensors, cylinder failure and now the airbag malfunction! the service folks want $600.00 to fix that. i have read the technical notices that went out and obviously the defects were not corrected on the cars whose owners are filing the complaints now. i also have a 1993 maxima with 217,000 miles on it. i have now spent more money in repairs on the 1999 that i have had for 2 years than i ever did on the 1993 in the entire 13 years i have owned it! the 1999 model obviously has some serious failures. again, review the technical notices! nissan needs to step up to the plate and do the right thing. if not a recall, then at the very least take care of the ones here who have taken their time, energy and money and fix the defects at nissan's expense. if not then i'm with the guy whose next purchase will be a honda or a toyota! *nm
