I have a 2000 nissan maxima. recently the problems have been piling on. the air conditioner stopped working in the summer and the check engine light went on. the air conditioner needs a new pump and the check engine light i was told is the o2 sensor. today is 1/27/13 and a week ago my power steering belt shredded. it caused the car to stall temporarily but i was able to drive the car to my local garage to be fixed. the mechanics said it was not only the power steering belt but the alternator belt and the pumps as well. the problem was taken care of and i picked the car up. before i pulled out i tried the heat and defrost but they would not work now. the heat and defrost had been acting strange and smelled as if burning was happening. the heat would be hard to turn off at times. the different levels of heat were all the same most time. the mechanics looked at it later and said the car needs a o2 sensor and the whole climate control mechanism. the mechanism on my car had melted wires. i have been noticing a lot of weird electrical quirks outside of thee heat. i have noticed a lot of decay for a car used everyday. the problems that prompted me to look online about these issues are exactly the same issues people are having with this vehicle at the same mileage. o2 sensor, electrical, decay, etc.. anyone who owns this vehicle should have been at least warned by the manufacturer. the problems this vehicle has and parts that should have been recalled or fixed can lead to people getting in fatal crashes. i wonder what the statistics for fatal crashes with these model years are compared to other? *tr

The car started accelerating and then died while driving down the road. had to exit off the road fast as the car coasted down to prevent other cars from hitting the car. in danger of other cars running over car while our car malfuction. took car to shop and was told a 2 dollar o-ring on the auto control valve had allowed air leakage and this in turned caused failure of the ecm electron control modugle. both auto control valve and ecm needs replacing where the car can be safely driven. the fact of this failure did not bring in the engine service light till after the event and fact it will cost over $2000 dollars to repair a car that is not work much more $3000 are just facts. nissan needs to at least send out to their customers that owns of this model and make could have this condition than can happen and exist and cause irratic behavior of the car if not check by nissan. a $2 dollar part causing a $2000 dollar repair.

I checked my oil and transmission fluid about a week and a half after buying the car and right when i shut the hood the check engine light popped on and stayed on obviously very temperamental. about a week later while stopped at a red light the engine felt a little weird then when i started driving right away the car lost power shut down and all the light popped on i had my 2 year old and 3 year old and fiance in the car and the steering wheel locked up and i almost got hit trying to steer it out of traffic into a mcdonald's. called the dealer and he just left us sitting there in the heat. called the tow truck and i was trying to restart the car but it would turn over but not stay on. so i wait and wait and decide to try starting it like 20 minutes later after looking under the hood and it starts right up as the tow truck is pulling up but he charged me anyway even though i was able to drive it from there to the dealers on my own the dealers mechanic kept trying to diagnose this thing and kept saying oh its fixed now about 4 different times...first he said it was the coil pack, then he said it was the maf mass air flow sensor, then they said bad gas was put in it by them and they cleaned the gas rail, then finally they listened to me and replaced the isc (idle speed control) motor now it started working and not dying on me when i slow down or stop at red lights because they gave it back to me like three times saying it was fixed and it wasn't but now when i'm in the park position with the car running within about 20-30 seconds the rpm drops and the car lights up and dies but at least it starts right back up and drives not like before but this is still a problem. look on identifix website and you will see that 4 components need to be recalled. the maf, ignition coils, isc, and most expensive of all the ecm which it says is usally damaged once the isc is done for.

Hi, i have a 2000 nissan maxima. i am having the same problem from other 2000 nissan maxima owners. my car stalls, shakes, hesitates and looses power, it acts like it wants to shut off. the service engine light comes on, the trac off light and the slip light come on all which are said to be caused by defective ignition coils. i have already replaced one and not even 1 month later the car started doing the same thing, meaning i will have to replace all six coils. i beleive nissan has to do a recall because that is a very dangerous thing to be drving and your car to stall out like that. i beleive that the owners of the 2000 nissan maximas with this problem should be reimbursed for the money we have to pay out to fix a part that nissan did not build correclt.

Car ran rough and stalled, took it to shop and they had to replace all the coils at a cost of almost $1,000. this happened at 65,000 miles. looking on this site there are 115 complaints about this problem. my question is how many people need to report a potential dangerous problem before it gets a recall?

2000 nissan maxima's have a serious engine ignition coil defect. -- this defect causes the engine to run rough, stall and abruptly and unexpectedly stop during normal use. the engine warning light was little (if any) value in helping alert the driver to the sudden engine failure. the engine has 6 separate coils. the first coil failed and was replaced by the nissan dealer. it was not covered by any type of nissan warranty. within a 90 day period, two additional coils failed and needed to be replaced. eventually, all 6 ignition coils ultimately needed to be replaced at a cost of over $900.00. the dealer stated this was a very common problem with this model, and said eventually all of the coils fail with this nissan year, make and model. he provide the failure code p1320 and nissan service reference: ntb01-059. the work was performed by a nissan dealer in arizona. this manufactures defect needs to be recalled by nhtsa and nissan needs to service these units before it results in additional accidents, fire or fatalities. *tr

Awareness needs to be made on the 2000 nissan maxima, the car will have a ecu breakdown resulting in the car to shut off at any given time. a trouble code of p0505 will trigger off in the car resulting in an insane repair cost. numerous cars are affected and nissan refuses to perform a recall on this car. its a matter of time before one of these nissans shuts down at the wrong time resulting in someone's death. there are pages upon pages of posts with this problem. *tr

On march 5, 2008, the idle air control went out on this vehicle. the part was replaced with a genuine part from nissan. within 30 days of replacing the part, the electronic motor mount wiring shorted out, which caused the new part to burn, as well as the computer. the car was taken to the nissan dealership, in which they were aware of this problem and failed to do something about it. i was told that this has happened to several other customers and there is nothing that could be done about it. everytime this part burns out, it will cost $2000.00 dollars to replace the part and you will still have problems with the vehicle. i feel the nissan dealership is concealing a problem that could have been recalled and some resolution to this problem could have been found. the consumers are being deceived by not being informed of this problem before they purchase the 2000 series of nissan maxima. *tr

My 2000 nissan maxima has been experience problems with the check engine soon light. a dealer hooked it up to a computer and indicated a code of p1320 - faulty coil - misfire on cylinder 4. he told me in his experience with 2000 nissan maximas he can replace one, but customer will be back because the coils are defective and other will eventually go. i feel since they are defective cylinders, nissan should recall the parts. *nm

At 57,000 miles a code was pulled from ecup0740 diag. poss electrical problem (unknown) could not find problem, $152 fee. returned vehicle several times for engine rpm rev. vehicle wants to move when at a complete stop. reset and reprogrammed computer (ecu). i wore breaks out several times, and the e-brake.($1,000) finally the intermittent problem was found repaired (2) o2 sensors $610.00. same problem occurs 2 months later. found bad ecu, core return iacv-aac valve. ($914.00). again 3 months later vehicle performing the same way, found and replaced another sensor oh this one was under warranty per nissan. at this time the vehicle is performing the same way and needs to go back to the dealer for more repairs. i spoke to the service manager at hart nissan, and he recommends that when you replace one sensor all six should be replaced. i know two people who own the 2000 maxima and they also had their sensors repaired. i have been a nissan owner for about 10 years and owned six vehicles myself/wife. i am in the market for another vehicle and i will never purchase other nissan ever again. this sensor problem needs to be addressed by nissan. don't bother calling nissan customer service because, a-they won't get back to you right away, b-they won't do anything for you besides say your vehicle is out of warranty and what do you want use to do you have 50,000-90,000 miles on your vehicle, things do go wrong. call the federal trade commission and loge a complaint, call your state m/v department dealers and repairs and have them investigate this sensor problem, and contact your states attorney office. (nissan is making hundreds of thousands of dollars of this sensor problem that should be a recall). *nm

Service engine light 2000 nissan maxima about 80k miles. in the last two months i have had my car in the shop 4 different times for my service engine light. my independent service station tried what they could, before finely replacing an oxygen sensor. this kept the service engine light off for the better part of two weeks. but it's back and this time the computer code is registering a faulty aacv valve. my mechanic says that this is a fairly common occurrence with these engines and that nissan might help foot the cost of repairs considering that the seal inside the assembly is the known culprit. my mechanic could make the repairs himself but then the car would need to be towed to nissan since the security codes would need to be reset and only nissan can do that. i called my local nissan dealership (where i purchased the car) and was told that since i had used an independent rather than their service center for repairs, the best i might get would be a hand shake. is what my mechanic said correct? is this is fairly common problem? and, if so, how do i get nissan to accept responsibility in as much as they used faulty materials in the manufacture of the aacv valve?

I am contacting the nhtsa in regards to tsb # ntb01-076b affecting 2000-2001 maximas involving the egi harness breakage. i have attempted to contact nissan's home division via e-mail on 3 seperate occasions with no response/reply back from their headquarters. this problem was identified on my vehicle last year causing the vehicle to overheat under normal conditions. upon taking it into the dealership, i was informed that it was a known manufacturing problem and many harnesses have been replaced, but at the cost of the consumer ranging from $1,500-3,000 (depending on the dealership). i have now personally had my car overheat and shutdown on three seperate occasions, the most recent nearly being a severe accident if not due to the attention of the drivers involved. next time this happens to an effected nissan the outcome may not be so minor. please investigate this tsb with nissan headquarters, being they are unwilling to make any efforts to reply back to the consumer. thank you for your time and concerns, lonnie beberniss 5839 westmont rd milton, fl 32583 850-626-0853 l.beberniss@mchsi.com

Had problems with engine ping 1 year after purchase. was told by dealership to use better grade of gas and some pinging is normal. pinging persisted and right after warranty expired, pinging got so bad the car was undriveable. all 6 coils and knock sensors needed to be replaced. cost me $1500. nissan won't cover any of it even though the problem obviously existed while vehicle was in warranty. despite efforts to have the vehicle serviced, nissan was negligent in refusing to perform the necessary repairs and stalling until the warranty had expired.

Vehicle would exhibit loss of power, misfiring and loud pinging noises at half throttle or more when passing or accelerating into highway traffic and when passing at any speed. also, the engine had an intermittent rough idle problem. rough enough to shake entire vehicle and either force me to pull over or prevent me from driving off safely. when i let the engine cool i would continue the trip hoping the problem would not recur. both problems were determined to be ignition coil(s) related. all six coils were replaced because no diagnostic trouble code dtc to pinpoint an individual coil had registered at the ecu computer along with no service engine light ses. the vehicle was less than three years old but had 37,500 miles. these coils are electrical components and are affected by age and/or design and not by miles driven. i did not qualify for warranty repair. *jb

I own a 2000 nissan maxima. since the purchase in 2000 we have had several problems with the electrical. blown fuses, ignition coils replaced, etc. when my power windows stopped working, then my door locks, then my lights i decided to take it to an independant mechanic. under the driver's seat there are 3 motors, all with wiring. the wiring was run in such a way that wires had been rubbed & pressed against metal partsf of the vehicle, leaving bare wires exposed. so, when you would sit on the seat the wires would touch metal and short out. i feel fortunate that i was not a victim of a fire beneath the seat which i believe would have been the ultimate outcome. i think this should be checked out to see if it is a common problem with this year and make of vehicle. 2000 nissan maxima se. thank you. *ak

I am a 2000 nissan maxima owner and have had the ignition coils misfire that the dealer wants to $850 to replace. i feel that this repair should be covered by nissan in the form of a manufacturers recall due to the fact that many other maxima owners have experienced the same problems and that there is evidence that the original ignition coils are defective. 1) this issue is very common with maximas and they perform many ignition coil repair/replacements. 2) i have seen on the internet service advisors suggesting to replace all the coils even if only one of them is malfunctioning because they say, the coils are defective and will all fail eventually. 3)there is a recall petition on the internet with about 2200+ people all having the same problem i understand that nissan has since issued a new part and part number for all ignition coil replacements, which suggests that the original coils are, in fact, defective. to maintain brand integrity and loyalty, i respectfully submit my complaint and request for a manufacturer's recall. sincerely, prakash iyer. *nm

Defective ignition coils in many/most 2000-2003 nissan maxima's (mine included) is not being reconciled in good faith by nissan. nissan has been aware of this issue for many years -(cars sputter and fail to accelerate creating high-risk situations) but will not assist with cost to repair or replace defective parts (ignition coils). repair work typically costs owners $600-900. i purchased as a certified used car but apparently that meant nothing for this specific problem. a petition for a recall per this issue is at the following web address: http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?nis_ign. *jb

Ignition coils failed causing service engine soon light to illuminate. code was reset after the first time, and on 10-23-06 it returned again with a code of p1320. engine had misfired between 10-02-06 and 10-23-06 and had exhibited extended cranking time for approximately 1 month before. starter and battery were replaced before incident. replacement of starter and batter was likely unnecessary because problem was likely the ignition coils. car also exhibited loss of power. *nm

I have the same engine ignition coil problem as listed throughout your site and the internet by thousands of other 2000 nissan maxima owners. the service engine light is on, the car is barely running because of these faulty ignition coils which the dealer recommend i have replaced for over $1000. nissan refuses to address this defect with a recall. something needs to happen. first they told it was the spark plugs which i had replaced. then it was these coils, the car just keeps getting worse daily. stalling, barely accelerating, can't take it on the highway because it barely moves. accelerator fails often, sometimes there is no response from pushing the gas pedal down. the fumes coming from the car indicate that gas is being wasted. also getting terrible gas mileage. please help. *nm

Ignition coil failure on well maintained 2000 maxima created dangerous driving situation, car would stall pressing accelerator accomplished nothing as if vehicle were starving for fuel; advised to have all 6 coils replaced (mechanic believes these had already been replaced once before - car was purchased used w/ 25,000 miles) current repair nearly $1000, also additional cost to replace oxygen sensor and fuel regulator; based on number of similar complaints, this should be of concern to nissan and should warrant a recall or at the least, some assistance with cost; wondering if class action type lawsuit advisable to gain nissan's attention. *nm

I have a 2000 nissan maxima after looking on the internet for parts to fix my car i came across a site called car survey about people with 2000 maximas complaining about the same problem with there car. reading further into it i have the same problem with my car. the car stalls in drive and in park this is a real problem for all of us considering that nissan wants about 1,000 dollars to fix this problem which i believe and a lot of people believe are the coils. this is a lot of money to most of us trying to raise a family and do not have that type of money. when i bought this maxima i was thinking i bought a nice reliable car, not knowing about this problem which a lot of people have experienced already. i am hoping that this letter among others will further convince nissan to do something about this problem considering it seems to be a defect in these cars thank you very much. *nm

Our 2000 maxima about 1 month ago started running rough for a short period of time on and off every 2 weeks. this week the engine service light came on. after researching the problem on the internet i discovered that many other maxima owners have had this problem. the ignition coil are going bad. a nissan design flaw. i have only 46900 miles on my car. this should not happen. my nissan dealer wants $105.00 per ignition coil plus installation. over $800.00 i told him i will never pay that price. i have taken it to midas. they will purchase the coils and install them at a much less labor cost. i will never by another nissan as i feel they had a defective parts doomed to fail. i am penalized for not driving more miles before the warranty expired. i can order on line these coils for $65.00 each from another nissan dealer. what makes me aggravated my local dealer in clearwater florida offers me no discount on parts or break on the labor knowing that this is a wide spread problem with this car. nissan should at least reimburse me for part of this repair or offer a discount on these parts. the sad part about it i have read about other owners of this car who have had to replace these parts more than once. that is unacceptable. *nm

The car began to run rough, the service engine soon light came on. when hooked up to diagnostics, the ignition problem code came up. the problem would clear up and then repeat again. i was told one of the ignition coils to the spark plug was the problem....i was going to wait to determine which one it was. i talked to the parts person at the nissan dealer - he told me they had had problems with these coils and had updated them. he also said i might as well replace them all, because the rest will fail soon. the price for each was quoted as $76.77! the car needs six to replace them all. the parts are not available except through nissan. i checked at other dealers and got the same results, except i was able to purchase the six coils at $47.33 each, plus shipping. my car has only 45,000 miles on it. replacing the coils fixed the problem. the new coils are designated as updated by the white circle they have now put on the part. i contacted the 800 number to lodge a complaint with nissan. they were essentially not very helpful, other than giving me a claim number. (claim number 48940766) when looking for these parts, i also found some on e-bay. the individual selling them made sure to let people know that these were the good or updated parts, not the problem original ones. the part numbers (two different coils are needed to replace the front and rear parts) are 22448-2y000 and 22448-2y005.*ak

In october 2004, on the first cool day of the fall season in houston, texas, my 2000 nissan maxima gle began to misfire, but the problem corrected itself after a few miles of driving. a month later, on another cool day in november, the problem recurred. this time, the event illuminated the service engine soon lamp. the vehicle has continued to misfire intermittently (but frequently) ever since. when i took the vehicle to my local nissan dealer for diagnosis, the service adviser pulled two trouble codes (p0306 and p1320) and told me the faults indicated replacement of all six ignition coils (per recommendation of tsb no. 01-059). the dealer wants $75 for each coil, and approximately $200 in labor to install them. upon further research, i discovered the prevalence of the problem with other '00-'01 maxima owners. i have owned and maintained my vehicle since it had 4000 miles on the odometer, and this is the first major problem that it has experienced in 72,000 miles. *nm

I drive a well maintained 2000 nissan maxima se that is regularly serviced by the dealer. i brought the car into the dealer at 59,600 miles due to difficulty starting the vehicle, and a sputtering and stalling issue. their diagnosis was to replace all 6 ignition coils - because 1 was likely bad, they couldn't tell which one, and that once one goes the others follow suit. this cost me $800. upon reviewing my records after the repair, i found that they had previously replaced the same 6 ignition coils at 30,000 miles in responce to a check engine light that had come on. ignition coils typically last the lifetime of a car, and all of mine have been replaced twice on a well maintained vehicle that is under 60,000 miles. i believe this is a manufacturers defect and should be recalled. if you check the following internet link, you will see statements from hundreds of 2000 maxima owners who had the same problem with low mileage: http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?nis_ign. *nm

This is a complaint on the nissan company manufactures and dealerships. they have manufactured cars (maxima 2000) which have faulty iginition coils (6). they are very much aware of this issue, and have done nothing about making this a recall. there are thousands of people calling about this issue and being told you're out of luck. the price for the correction and replacement of the ignition coils starts at $800. and there is no way to single out which coil is in need of replacement, and if you are lucky and can single it out, 2 months later another one will go out. so in the end you find it cheaper to get all 6 removed. this is a burden on maxima 2000 owners all over the country. there are petitions all over and online asking to start a recall.*ak

 (1) engine light comes on but engine runs fine. reset power and light goes away. (2) engine light comes back on 1 week later and engine sputters. (3) ignition coil was failing. had to replace all 6 since and platinum plugs. nissan could not recommend how to find failed one, or knew that all would fail? cost $ 650. there is no recall for the coils, but plenty have failed. a technical report should be generated by nissan to instruct people how to locate which coil to replace to reduce cost. to ignore inherent problems will reduce recalls and customers.

I have read the complaints on the 2000 nissan maxima regarding ignition coil failures. i recently had a check engine soon light come on. took it to the dealer and it was diagnosed as and ignition coil failure. nissan recommended i change all ignition coils. my vehicle had 19,050 miles on it when this occurred. although it was out of factory warranty, i had purchased an extended warranty. the extended warranty would only cover the bad coil, not the coils being replaced as a precaution per nissan's recommendations. i decided to do it anyway and then battle with the 1-800-nissan1 customer service number. i was treated very professionally and fairly by nissan. they paid for all of the coils and installation. *jb

Defective maf sensor on 2000 nissan maxima se had to be replaced at the owners cost. nissan has in essance admitted that the original part was defective by revising the part. the exact same situation applies to the ignition coils as well.*ak nissan has issued a tsb on both issues, but will only replace the parts if the vehicle is under warranty. they should recall the defective parts and replace them at their cost. both can cause extreme driveability problems and affect the driver's control over the car.
03/11/20041
The service engine soon light turned on while driving and has remained on. when i first took it in for diagnostic tests i was told that i needed a tune up. the service engine soon light was reset and came on again after only one day. i recently took it in again and p1320 was detected and i was told that my ignition coils were bad. dealer recommends replacing all 6 coils as they can't determine which coil is actually bad. i have researched this and found that this is the most common problem with the 2000 nissan maxima. the dealer advised me that the parts are very costly at least $75 for each coil, plus labor. this does not appear to be safe as the car drives normal, and then will eventually sputter, and vibrate resulting in decreased speed. the engine feels like it is about to fall out, and you can't pick up speed until the vibration stops. this part needs to be recalled, there have been too many consumers having to pay the price for this defective part. *ak

#5 ignition coil experiencing malfunction. after research on the internet found there to be quite a number of maxima owners experiencing the same problem, yet a recall was not issued. in fact, the replacement part is a redesigned ignition coil. this says to me that nissan was aware the parts are faulty, and there are six ignition coils in the 2000 maxima. nissan customer care would not take care of this matter and i had to fix on my own. had this failed a few months earlier, and my car still in warranty, nissan would have replace all 6 coils, not just the one that was malfunctioning. *la

Replacement of (6) engine ignition coils on car with 46,000 miles. cost $675.00. there is a technical service bulletin that identifies this problem and the servicing dealer admits seeing this problem often. this component is designed to last 100,000 miles and the manufacturer regular service maintenance doesn't suggest replacing at any service interval up through 90,000 miles. so, if the dealers are seeing this problem often on a component that is lasting less than expected then the component failure and longevity rate are unsatisfactory and consumers should be reimbursed at a prorated basis at a minimum. *la

2000 nissan maxima se. thank you. *ak
