The car is jerking/bucking violently when shifting from reverse into drive and again when shifting into first and second gears. it is also jerking when downshifting from second to first gear. at first, the shifting problem was an occasional occurrence, however, it has progressively gotten worse. now it is almost constant. after researching this problem, i have found that hundreds and hundreds of '04-05 maxima owners are experiencing the exact same problems. this is quite obviously a nissan manufacturing defect that should be corrected by nissan corp. *tr

At 65k miles, 2004 nissan maxima began to buck, stall out. dash lights came on - abs, slip, brake, tcs off. grinding noise coming from front of car. abs seemed to be on all the time. dealer evaluated - said it needs abs actuator, which was ordered, and should be ok to drive. in the meantime, traction control does not work, abs come on all the time, car stalls on acceleration. *cn

The failure is with the abs system on my 2004 maxima. there is a documented tsb for this problem for 2004-07. a poor design of rear wheel assembly(by nissans own admittance) causes wheel sensor to prematurely fail, causing abs controller/solenoid to fail. this has been documented to occur with less than 40,000 miles on a vehicle. this in turn completely disables the vehicle's abs system. nissan refuses to issue a recall or even assist with repairs, even with all of the reported incidents. in most incidents that i found, it fails right after the factory warranty has expired. in my particular case, i have an extended pre-owned warranty through nissan. though, nissan says that it isn't covered under my warranty. repairs are estimated to cost in the area of $2100.00. as heavy as the vehicles are, not having functioning abs can be very dangerous. i don't know exactly how many people have had this problem, but a quick search of automotive forums for the nissan maxima returned a great amount, completely describing the problem and fix needed.

I bought the 2004 nissan maxima sl for my wife in 2008. it was a one owner with about 90,000 highway miles, i loved the car and had no problems until feb 2010. the abs system started acting up. sounds like the abs is trying to engage every time you hit the brakes. nissan dealership wanted $100 just to hook it to computer to see what the problem was, no thank you. i had a mechanic friend hook his service computer up while i drove and like many other consumers, my maxima has a right (passenger) rear speed sensor that is bad, this causes the brakes to not function properly, all the while there are no service lights on the dash, you can pull the abs fuse and but then that knocks out 1/2 of the cluster, including speedometer, gas gauge, parts of the obc, this is a huge problem suffered by many consumers and needs to be addressed immediately. *tr

I bought a 2004 nissan maxima in 2003 right after the redesign, and every since i have had it little things start going wrong. at 39,000 miles major things start going wrong now at 54,000 miles i have no abs braking system, and other things seems to start acting up. i have tried asking nissan for help but they told me to get lost. i wish the tsb would look out for the consumers and get them some relief. i guess the only thing we as consumer can do is get a lawyer and sue under the lemon law and i know you don't need any money to retain an attorney. i know that 928 complaints that some thing is wrong with the product, and i am sure that the courts will agree with me. i had high hopes for nissan cars but now if you try to give me one i would try and have you committed. i will never buy another nissan ever. *tr

I have a 2004 nissan maxima with 50,008 miles on it and recently had the abs coming on while i was driving and no dash waring lights on, brought it to the dealer to find out that the right rear abs speed sensor went bad but why didn't any waring lights come on they pulled the abs fuse and now the warning lights are on but you absolutly can not stop the vehicle when this happen this imagine hitting the brakes at 55 mph with your two year old in car and its not stoppin becuse when you abs sensor goes bad it turns on the abs which does not allow your normal brakes to operate and do not throw any of your dash lights on, if i had the money for a lawyer i would be going after nissan right now it should work so if you have a problem with your abs it should turn at least your warning lights and then disconnect the abs so you can use your normal brakes to actully stop the car..... also none of the front end and rear end body lines match up to none of the gaps between hood and fenders are the same can get finger in one side and not the other smae with the trunk, and the car has only been in one accident that i know of that i reported had gottin side swiped at 45 mph on drivers side by big truck also notice that front and rear windsheilds do not have nissan stamp on windows the car fas was clean well the on the dealership i bought car from was clean i think this car was wrecked front and rear and fixed and wasn't reported then sold to me with 26,800 miles when i bought it no sits at 50,000 cuse have nothing but problems with i would like a state inspector to look at car my opinion is car is unsafe but only one i have and still owe more than 10,000 dollars on it please help.

My abs light came on about a year ago, i took it to the mechanic shop to have them look at it. and they told me i needed to replace the rear wheel hub and the abs sensor so i did which cost me $800 dollars. the mechanic told me they get a lot of maxima in there shop with the same problem. he said it was a nissan manufacturers flaw. so make the long story short after i replaced the hub and the abs sensor my abs light still stays on and now i need and abs control module which went bad because of the wheel hub getting rusty.

Partial brake failure when approaching highway stop light at 45 mph, dry conditions. braking distance more than doubled as front brakes made very loud scraping and grinding sounds (not typical abs sound) while not having any stopping power - i appeared to only have rear brakes. was able to stop just inside intersection. luckily no traffic was in way, avoiding an accident. dealer identified problem as caused by rust buildup on rear hubs due to lack of a drainage channel/port on rear knuckles (said drainage port wasn't there), a known problem. water backup in knuckle causes rust on hub and on abs sensors, resulting in premature failure of both abs sensors, which in my case caused an unexpected stopping problem. both rear hubs and abs sensors had to be replaced at cost of over $1300. car is very low mileage and garaged. dealer identified this as a known problem and nissan described the repair in service bulletin reference ntb07-016b, also in nhtsa database as service bulletin number 07016, nhtsa item # 10021681. this failure was not routine and only the luck of the situation allowed an accident to be avoided. this known problem was identified in 2007 and i was unaware of it, though nissan was. this is a serious safety problem with the abs brakes and should trigger a recall so that others may be alerted to have this repair before more accidents occur.
09/01/200775000
The abs braking system broke down several times before it failed all together. the problem appears to be due to a faulty design that allows rust to build up between the wheel sensors and the hub, which appears to be most prevalent in the salt states. the initial symptoms include the abs firing during regular braking, which could be a safety concern at high speeds. eventually, the misfiring abs will cause the abs controller to burn out completely.

My 2004 nissan maxima started making a grinding noise when i put on brakes with pedal & steering wheel vibrations dec 2009, i took it to 2 different mechanic shops for the problem & was told i needed front & back brakes & rotors which i purchased costing over $700.00 and the problem wasn't resolved, i took the car to jeffrey nissan dealer in roseville,mi and they could not find the problem, this went on for over a month and finally the abs light & brake lights came on, i took the car back to the same nissan dealer at which time i was informed that my abs system had went, costing me $2400.00 dollars in repairs(in addition to the $700.00 dollars already spent for a total of $3100.00 dollars). i believe the abs system was defective and should have been repaired by nissan and looking at all the other comments regarding the 2004 nissan maxima there should have been a recall. *tr

Over the course of several months, the slip indicator light on my dashboard would blink as the right front wheel locked up and i would hear a grinding noise. my nissan dealer could not duplicate this event. when this lock up would happen, the car pulled violently to the right and i would lose control of the car. when these events would happen my vehicle speed would be between 25 and 40 mph and on a dry road and either driving straight or around a minor curve. on sat. 5/30 while driving between 35 and 45 mph the slip light came on 3 times within 10 minutes. the first time a violent pull to the right with loss of control causing me to go onto the shoulder of the road. the second time, both front brakes engaged and the car almost came to a complete stop and the car behind me missed rear ending me by 5-6 feet. the third time both front wheels locked up pulling me to the right. no damage. there is no warning when these events happen. sudden and shocking loss of vehicle control. the brakes lights do not come on. my nissan dealer tells me that there have been no codes in the past, but on sat. the vehicle threw a code indicating the yaw/g force sensor had failed. as the driver of the car, you are out of control and risking your life, property, and the safety of other motorists. this dangerous condition can lead to accidents, property damage, injury and possibly death. *tr

I've had a total failure of the vehicle dynamic control/stability control. the yaw/g force sensor failed. prior to this being discovered by a code on the car's computer, i complained to the dealer that on dry roads, on straight always and curves at speeds between 25 and 45, the passenger front brake would engage without warning and the car would pull violently to the right. dealer investigated and could not duplicate the experiences. on sat. 5/30 in under 10 minutes 3 times i experienced a sudden and uncontrollable application of the right front brake which pulled me off the road and onto the shoulder of the road 2 times and the application of both front brakes which caused the car to come to a sudden full stop. i was nearly rear ended by the car behind me. when this failure happens it is un announced, sudden violent and the brake lights do not come on. nissan confirms the sensor has failed. this is a dangerous condition and can lead to accidents, property damage, injuries and possibly death. *tr

Problem with steering wheel shaking badly while braking. i was told i needed new tires at first soon after ownership. i bought this maxima new in 2003 with about 10 miles on it. couple years later had to take back to dealership for bad tires/cracking on the sidewalls. had two new tires put on and had the rotors machined. problem recurred almost immediately after having rotors machined with some improvement, but now the problem is worse than ever. bought two more tires and was told to replace the rotors when i am going to replace the brakepads, which has already been done once. fog light also had to be replaced while getting an inspection. had to replace a battery which made my gas gauge fail/currently does not work. put gas in every 300 miles so i don't get stranded on the road. care runs badly and i feel very unsafe in this vehicle/considering getting rid of it as soon as possible. i believe nissan should take this vehicle off the road before it seriously hurts somebody. *tr

Abs system failed after 5 years and 44,000 miles. needs $2000+ to repair. this is unacceptable, especially since this is not an isolated incident. this has happened to many, many other owners of this make/model car. nissan issued a tsb but will not accept responsibility. *tr

The abs pump in the maxima is defective. it grinds and grinds and the light doesn't come on. the mechanics could not find what was wrong with the car until the sound was so loud, you could hear it from outside the car. the car is only a few years old and this should not happen. if you visit maxima.org, you can see on the forum that everyone with an '04 maxima has an abs problem. this needs to be recalled and nissan should fix these. this is over $1000 of work from the mechanic. we have owned 6 nissans and this is the only time this has ever happened. it is very upsetting that nissan will not acknowledge this problem. *tr

I have a 04 maxima-while at first i did not know what the noise was or where it was coming from. i took my car to several places for a mechanic to identify the noise. at first none of them knew what it was. then finally one said he thought it had something to do with the abs system. but there was no light to indicate that. the noise continued and i continued to try to find out what it was. i took my car to the nissan dealer in marlow heights and the mechanic told that the noise came from after-market pads. even i knew that was not it. so i was told just wait and see if it gets worse. well it has gotten worse. then if came across a master technician who told me exactly what the problem was (the abs system) although still abs light was not on. now the car is in the shop and of course the car warranty has expired and the extended warranty does not cover the cost (right rear abs sensor and cap) and let's hope that i don't need an actuator which cost $1,500. i'm waiting to hear from nissan. if they don't cover the cost which i think they should (this being my fourth max) since the car is not really that old. and i also think that nissan knows about this problem. and if they don't cover the cost this will be my last nissan. *tr

I have had problems with my 2004 nissan maxima since purchasing it brand new. within 60 days of purchasing the car, i had to take it back to the dealership due to a malfunction with the brakes. i have spent over $1,500 since keeping the brakes and rotors repaired. i am on my fourth set of tires and have had three alignments and my front end inspected. i have had to replace an engine mount. in 2006 my air conditioner went out and i spent over $500 having that repaired. now i am in need of a new transmission because there is internal damage due to the clutch slipping even though it is an automatic car. i have two friends with the same model/year car and they have experienced similar or the same problems. once of my friends just replaced his transmission in his 2004 maxima. this car has cost me at least $5,000 in repairs since i have purchased it and i have never ever received a recall notice on anything. i know that nissan is well aware of the defects in the 2004 maxima, but are not owning up to their responsibility in taking care of all of the problems that i have read about and talked about with different 2004 maxima owners. i have also had the battery replaced twice. the body style of the car is beautiful, but the car itself is a piece of crap due to poor mechanics.

*tr

The abs system has stopped working at only 42,000. i believe the part is defective. now the car cannot use abs to stop which is unsafe in rain or snow. the manufacturer does not want to help pay for the repairs, although the dealer is willing to offer a discount for repair because the car has only 42,000 miles on it when the abs stopped working. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated the abs light remained illuminated after the car was turned on or off. the light illuminated on and off by itself. the battery needed to be disconnected to shut the light off. most of the times, the abs had to be completely disconnected, and the vehicle was operating without this safety feature. there were no warning signals prior to the incident. the vehicle was taken to the dealership, who determined that the entire abs system and the sensors needed to be replaced.

I have had numerous problems with my 2004 nissan maxima. i have had to replace tires, have had the vehicle in the shop for the check engine light coming numerous times; have paid to have the battery replaced because the car suddenly stalled; have had the catalytic converter replaced because of one of the check engine light trips to the dealer. most recently, i replaced the front and back brakes due to what i thought was normal wear and tear. a month later, the abs brake system fails, and i am told that is not under warranty, and the charge will be $1,645. the car is only two years old. i am at the dealer at least once, sometimes twice a month. i used to be the biggest cheerleader for nissan. i had a 1991 nissan maxima that i bought used with 173,000 miles on it. that car was on the road until it had more than 300,000. now i feel like i purchased a lemon. i bought a new car because i didn't want the headaches that come along with a used car. i took my car to the dealer on september 18th because something weird going on with the brakes. i had had the brakes changed about a month before that, i knew that they were in good condition. i received a call later that day telling me that my abs brake system was bad and needed to be replaced. and that i would need to cover the cost because the part was no longer under warranty. i contact nissan north america to lodge a complaint on september 19th to see if they would cover the cost for the abs system failing, because i don't think that i should have to cover a major repair like that on a 2 year old car. i was told that a regional specialist would call me back within 24 hours. 2 days passed without a return call. i called again on the 22, and again on the 25th with no response. l believe that nissan is aware of all of the manufacturing defects with the maxima and by not responding hope that consumers will go ahead and pay for the repairs over and over again because they are afraid to drive an unsafe car. *nm

2004 nissan maxima se. anti-lock brake (abs) components failing, there is also a service bulletin on the nissan website describing ways to fix or replace parts, but very expensive. this is absolutely a public safety issue. the abs did kick on under normal braking and now the abs motor is stuck running, the brake and abs lights are on and the abs system will no longer activate in a dynamic sliding condition. the abs motor continues running even when the vehicle is turned off and the key is removed. the fuse and motor get extremely hot and may potentially cause a fire in the vehicle if the battery is not disconnected overnight. there are a number of different posting on the web about this problem and at least 3 different nissan dealerships that i have called are aware of this being a problem with this model. *tr

Defective abs sensor ($482.71) apparently a common issue with the 2004 nissan maxima as there is a service bulletin alerting the dealers of the same. i tried to get nissan to at least cover the cost of the part ($202.99) and was finally contacted by the regional rep after over a week of e-mails and phone calls. i was told i was basically sol. seems to me that a brake issue involving defective parts is very serious one. and at least the consumer should be alerted to it, even if it is not at the recall stage yet!!!! no longer happy with the folks at nissan. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan maxima. since the vehicle was purchased, the contact has experienced failures with the radio and headlights, the rotors were replaced three times, the front coil springs were replaced twice, and the battery wiring burned. currently, the transmission pulls when the vehicle is accelerated. the vehicle will be taken to the dealer to diagnose the transmission failure. the manufacturer stated that no recalls were available for any of the failures. the current mileage was 49,000 and failure mileage was 26,000.

Multiple strut failures on a car with only 28k miles. also brake rotors continue to warp. this is unacceptable for such a new car. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated, while decelerating or depressing the break pedal, the front wheels and steering wheel vibrated and jerked from left to right. the problem was recurring, but not constant. the vehicle was inspected and serviced on four separate occasions. each time, the front break rotors were turned, eliminating the vibration for a short period of time. the manufactured determined the rotors overheat at times, warping the rotors, and suggested the vehicle be taken to another service dealer. the manufacturer also confirmed that warranty has expired, so services would be provided at cost.

At 13k miles, when traveling over 50 mph and i step on the brake, the steering wheel and front end judders violently. this has caused much concern and worry. however, when i took my car to the dealer i was told that the rotors could be machined down to a smooth finish at my expense of $120.00. i asked why it wasn't covered under my warranty and was told, because it's considered maintenance. for a new car - 2004, under 30k miles that is bull and nissan should fix the problem! *nm

Ever since the first day i purchased my 2004 nissan maxima, i noticed something rather odd. at 50 mph, even less at most times, there is a terrible shimmy which can cause a serious accident. when i step on the brakes at or above 50 mph, the wheel shakes ferociously out of control, and this can cause a serious serious accident, especially in rain or snow, and even on dry land. i am not the only one. everyone with a 2004-2006 nissan maxima has this problem. this is a lemon. *jb

Front brakes pulsate violently when braking. front end shimmies constantly. original front tires wore out within 10,000 miles. nissan continues to ignore the design flaws and component failures (rotor failure) in this 2004 maxima. owners are getting nothing but the runaround when vehicle safety is a huge issue. *jb

My 2004 nissan maxima has been experiencing loud rattling noise when driving and severe shaking of the steering when applying the brakes. in april 2006 i took the car to the dealership. they stated the struts and suspension needed to be placed and insisted i pay for it. the struts had been replaced in the car previously in april of 2005 along with defective rotors. they also suggested the belts be replaced because they were cracking. i have not had the car two years yet, but parts on this vehicle continue to malfunction exhibiting all signs of defective manufacturing. additionally i replaced two of the originally tires (goodyear rsa 18) at 12k and 20k miles for tears in the sidewalls. i have reviewed the other complaints on file for this vehicle from other owners and unfortunately i share the same problems with my maxima. *nm

Purchase new car dec 2003, car vibrated while braking and making a rubbing noise when turning, this was at 11,000 miles, rotors were turned and then problem started again and the rotor were turned a second time. the rotors were turned a third time when the noise returned the fourth visit the rotors were replaced after much protest by the dealership. now the problem is back again the noise has returned.. do you have any information regarding a defect with the rotors, struts, or brake pads.. the brake pads were also replaced after i insisted that they were replaced. the dealership continues to say that the rotors get hot and can warp when you hit water on the road, surely the rotors should not have to be replaced after a year of normal wear. i also have a 1997 toyota 4 runner and a 95 4-runner and have never had to replace the rotors. please advise. *nm
