The office of defects investigation (odi) opened this investigation on april 12, 2004, based on five reports indicating that the skyview glass-paneled roof, which is standard equipment in model year (my) 2004 nissan maxima vehicles, would suddenly shatter while the vehicle is in use.five injuries have been reported to odi, resulting in cuts to the head, hands, arms, or face.nissan discovered that their supplier for the skyview glass paneled roof did not properly quench (cool) the glass after it was formed.the resulting temper imbalance could create excessive internal stress in the glass and can eventually cause the glass to shatter.nissan reports that glass produced beginning october 23, 2003 was properly quenched.nissan has informed the agency that it will recall 32,100 my 2004 nissan maximas built from the beginning of production thru december 17, 2003.it reports that vehicles built after december 17 are not affected.to correct the condition nissan will replace the existing skyview glass with new properly quenched glass.nissan will begin owner notification on september 7, 2004.odi is aware of only one complaint and nissan reports no complaints of skyview glass paneled roof breakage on vehicles built after the december 17 date.this investigation is closed, however the agency will monitor complaints and take appropriate action as appropriate.

On or about the evening of october 23, 2007, i heard a loud boom! as i was driving down the highway. i didn't see anything airborne, or feel any sort of impact. at first i thought someone had blown-out their tire, but there were no cars around us. so i parked and looked at my tires. all all my tires were fine, and there was no sign that anything had hit the body anywhere in the front, rear or sides of the vehicle. however, the next morning it was drizzling, and as i was pulling out, i noticed a small trickle of water coming from the light panel above. it was seeping in from the roof somehow. this was strange, because i don't have a sunroof --only a skyview and that doesn't open. i slid back the roof panels to investigate. as the daylight shined through i was horrified to find the skyview window full of cracks. it looked liked cracked ice which started above the frontseat area, and continued into the backseat area. i immediately called 1-800- nissan-1 and reported this to customer care rep. christine basille x. 51276, and told her what had happened. furthermore, i told her that i had received a recall notice about the skyview with my vin some years earlier, back in 2004. i was told to contact nissan whether i had experienced any problems with it or not. i told her that in 2004, i had taken it to the dealer in response to the recall back then. the dealer had kept my vehicle overnight to inspect it, but chose not to replace my skyview saying something like my vehicle didn't appear to be affected. christine basille told me that a representative would get back in contact with me by monday. in the interim, i took my car to the dealership for assessment, because my service rep said that he would be able to tell the difference between a warranty issue and damage due to impact. although, the service dept. reported that there is no sign of impact, they have declined covering the repair. i still have not heard back from my regional nissan representative.

3rd problem with maxima: purchased 2004 nissan maxima brand new. after 2 major problems that i spoke about in two earlier complaints, i am not on #3. in october, 2005, two weeks before my wedding, while my area was getting some rain. i got in my car as usual to begin driving to work, when i noticed a big puddle on my passenger leather seat. my sunroof was leaking. when i called nissan in huntington, ny, again, i had to wait days before i can get an appointment, even though it was still raining. the dealership verified the sun roof glass seal was leaking and the replaced sunroof glass assembly. they actually gave me a rent a car this time, because i complaint to a manager. *nm

While driving on the highway during the night, the glass of the electric sunroof shattered and broke. it was raining, so the roof lining and the sunroof cover got damaged by the water. there is no physical evidence of anything hitting and breaking the glass. the dealer refused to perform the repair under warranty, even though there is a recall of other maximas for similar problems (with the skyview). the parts are ordered and will arrive in 2 to 3 weeks. the old parts are still on the car, which can not be used when raining. the total estimated bill is going to be over $2,800 for parts and labor. *jb

I was driving to work & i heard and felt a blow and heard air from the outside, and then i looked up and saw my sun roof was shattered. i was freaking out, and drove to the dealership. they knew this sun roof was a recall. i was never notified nor received a letter from nissan. i had glass, and my arm and my back and my 17 month old daughter car seat had glass all over it, and pieces of glass in it's fabric. i will never put her back in her car seat nor will my family, nor i feel safe ever again. although the dealership fixed the problem. i do not feel safe!!! i feel nissan should reimburse me for my baby's car seat, and put me into another vehicle. i will tell my fmaily & friends not to buy this car from nissan. it's not safe at all!!!*ak

When driving down a major highway heard a loud explosion. passenger looked around and saw no vehicles near the car. opened the shade for the sky-view glass roof of a 2004 nissan maxia and glass flew into the car causing the driver to swirve on the highway. glass cut both passangers hands, arms and face. the sky-view glass roof had apparently shattered. this has been confirmed by the dealer where the car was purchased.*ak this is a sky view roof that does not open. the glass panel runs the lenght of the vehicle. this is not a conventional sunroof that pops up or slide rearward. consumer brought the vehicle to dealer to be repaired. now the glass panel leaks when it rains. consumer was cut by the glass chardes when opening the shade and the shattered glass fell into the passenger compartment. the shade was closed at the time of the incident.cw

The car started up and was running fine. my wife went back into the house to get our daughter and found the car had stalled. the car has not started since. i am concerned about this situation, because of the fact that the car justed stalled for no apparent reason. i hate to think what could have happened if my wife was driving the car. in addition, according to several post on edmunds.com this is happening to other consumers. i have had other problems with this car since i purchased it 3-12-03. it has been back to the dealership several times for the following reasons: service engine lights coming on, leaking sunroof, cd not working, a fog/condensation behind center console screen, and interior molding coming loose. i have called nissan usa and spoke to matt at 310-771-8454 ext 8454. if you can help with this please contact me at 410-239-0119. thank you for your time and efforts. *jb

The windshield rubber on the top was loose when i bought this car. also i noticed there was a scratchy sound when i turned on the wiper right on the first day i took this car home. i checked it and found out that the wiper rubber was came loose and the steel touch the windshield class. it scratch the windshield. the stevens creek dealer was very nice and they did change the windshield and tighten the seal arround the windshield. 2 days ago it was rain preaty hard in where i live. in the morning when i drove the car i was shock that there was water coming out from the lights interior. it was preaty bad and i couldn't believe i paid so much for this piece a junk. many times the engine would stalled, you can't gas and loose the power. i brought it to the same dealer, they couldn't regenerate the problem thus they don't know how to fix it. the tire vibrate between 50-80 mph and they couldn't fix that one either. i've been driving so many cars...and this is the worst one. this is would be my first and last nissan and i'm planning to sale it asap. i have a feeling that this car's resale value would be lot lower the mistsubishi. one more thing; the driver seat cover on the back came loose also and it hanging on the seat and shows the inside of the seat. did i tell you this car is a piece of junk already? now you know.*ak
