I pulled out at a busy intersection and my nissan maxima stalled out, it seemed like it would not go into first gear, even though i was pressing the gas pedal to accelerate, the car just wouldn't go into gear! it caused other cars to have to slam on brakes and drive on the shoulder to avoid hitting me and each other! my car finally jerked violently into gear. i took it to the nissan dealership and they said this was a known defect in the transmission, 4,000 to fix!! mind you they will replace it with a new defective transmission that there it no guarantee it will last more than 1 year! not a safe car to drive in metropolitan areas! *tr

It has been proven and reported many times on the internet of the poor design of the secondary timing chains, tensioners, and guides for this particular model of nissan. owners of these vehicles have had to pay huge repair bills due to the defective timing chain tensioners that were placed in this vehicle when it was manufactured. they wear out prematurely and the engine has to be taken out of the car to replace the defective parts. this is inexcusable on the part of nissan and the owners shouldn't have to pay these huge repair costs to replace a part that was defective in the first place.

I am having very bad transmission issues. when i take off it jerks real bad in the lower gears and then when i am slowing down about to come to a stop it also kicks and jerks real bad when it gears down in the lower gears. and sometimes it just wont go at all..and then when i sit there a min and put my car from park to drive it hesitates for afew secs and then jumps real bad and then goes into drive.it usually does all this when the car is warmed up.

I bought a 2005 maxima 3.5 sl in 2006 brand new in south carolina. i first started having problems when i had my 60,000 mile service. about two weeks after the service my check engine light came on so, i took it to the dealership. they said there was no codes, and cleared the light. i then took my car in for the 90,000 service and once again around a week or two later my check engine light came on. i took it to the dealer and now their was codes saying my egr valve needed to be replaced. i told the dealership the same thing happened when i did my 60,000 mile service. needless to say their was a recall that they would have replaced it for free but i was just over the mileage where it could have been done at no cost to me. about 3 months later my car jerked really hard, and my car lost complete power then jerked once more and started to move. the gauges in the car went completely out and every light possible on the dash came on. first i was told i have to replace four sensors, and so i did so along with the egr valve. the car ran fine for about two weeks and started doing the same thing. when i went from drive to reverse or vice versa it would jerk real hard before engaging. i then took the car to the repair shop and they said my transmission sensor was bad. i just had it replaced two weeks ago, and now my car is back is the shop doing the same thing. the tcs slip, and every light on the dash is on, and none of my gauges are working. now they say it might be the computer that is bad. this last time i was on my way home from missouri and it disengaged and would not put up speed when i pressed the gas pedal. i was nearly rear ended, and had to pull over because my 12 year old daughter was in the car and got scared. *tr

Transmission is slipping, especially at low speeds and when putting car into or out of reverse. when the transmission slips out of drive the engine revs and there is a sudden jerk. the car also jerks whenever switching from reverse to drive. the transmission failures are becoming more frequent. the car has 70k+ miles and research shows that transmission failure is a common problem with this car at this mileage.

My 2005 nissan is jerking dangerously while shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. almost caused an accident with my children in the car. nissan knew about this problem when i bought the car less than a year ago and chose not to inform me just to make a sell. i believe that the tranny is defected and should be recalled and nissan seems to refuse to help with this problem. i am concerned for my safety and spent 12,000 on the car now they are asking me to pay 4500 for the tranny. if this was told to me that this was a problem when the car was bought i would have went and brought a honda instead. rip off and danger alert to anyone that own this model vehicle.

I bought a 2005 nissan maxima about a year ago and the past couple of months (just right over 100k miles), i have noticed major jerking and pulling while driving or shifting gears. it is an automatic, but when i start to go, it takes it a few seconds to get in gear and jerks. i have heard many others have the same issue with 2004-2005 models. are there any recalls as of yet? i have always heard great things about maximas and do not want to have to replace my transmission, especially this early on! please help! thank you!
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
04/04/2012
I recently purchased an 05 maxima with 107,000 miles on it. the next day i heard a loud ticking from engine. my tensioners are failing an estimated $2000 repair. in the same day upon acceleration my wheel jerked violently, a sign of a failing transmission. $3000+ this is ridiculous. this is absolutely criminal that a recall has not been initiated by nissan.this is a problem for thousands of people, and a severe risk to the safety of the driver. i will be contacting every available newspaper and news agency in my area and will try to contact national news agencies this is absolutely atrocious. i beg other nissan owners to make this a problem for nissan that wont go away until proper actions are taken.
12/03/201135
I am told that i am expericencing problems with my transmission and engine. after careful research, and two mechanic opinions it has been told to me that nissan knew that they had problems with this model of maxima and has not owned up to this problem. neither have they recalled or trying right their wrong. these items are the life of the car. i have also checked the reviews on edmunds.com and there are several owners of this same car that have had the same issues and complaints. i would like to know what measures can be taken against nissan for them own up to these defective components. it will hurt them in the lon run if they do not. i wil certainly make sure that the world knows about this and do not even attempt to purchase a nissan. i only wish i had done this before i purchased this car.

I bought this vehicle used with and it started jerking 2 months later. it has gotten to be really bad now! and very dangerous. i have read many many many people with the same problem. i dont want money or a new car, i just want my car fixed. bad transmission.
06/16/2011
Having problems with the transmission. it continues to jerk when shifting from gear to gear. it also slows down and has no acceleration.
01/07/2012
I own a 2005 nissan maxima which i absolutely love! but about two months ago i started to experience problems with the transmission. after the car was warmed up and i have been driving it for about 20 min.s or so the transmission would act up when i was between 2 and 3 rpms and would either rev the engine or take about 5 to 10 seconds before shifting gears with a rough clunk noise and a hard jerk. the same thing happens when i go from drive to reverse it would take a while and then make a rough jerk before changing gears. i feel this is a safety hazard because you never know when the car will accelerate on its own or thrust into another car when changing gears abruptly.
11/30/2011130000
Bought car brand new 9/2005. car was serviced multiple times and even a nissan engineer tested steering and suspension. when speed is at 60 mpr, steering wheel shakes. new tires were put on by dealership several times, also. engineer stated that car was supposed to do that. well now my car's transmission is acting up. please note that steering wheel still shakes, too. i did a google search and see that numerous people are having the same issue. this car has to be a lemon. i will be contacting nissan north america to file a complaint also and request that they repair my car.
08/17/201112500
I like many others am having the exact transmission slipping, jerking problems between 2nd and 3rd gear. the rpm's just jump right up under acceleration, the transmission slips then catches causing a jerking, lurching forward action. it is very dangeroua especcially coming on to a majon highway. because of this i will not let my wife and children drive in the car. we cannot afford the quoted $3500 to $4000 to replace the transmission. nor do we feel as if we should have to. we have owne this car since new. it has been very reliable but this is abusrd. nissan needs to recall this model year and replace with corrected transmission before someone gets killed. or is that what it's going to take to get them to acknowledge the problem.
09/15/201162000
The transmission violently shifts up and down causing the car to jerk forward when at speeds ranging from 20-40, slowing down or accelerating up almost causing an accident.as well as slipping out of gear around 35-45 mph revving the engine then slamming into gear causing temporary loss of control. this is an extreme safety hazzard. nissan maxima problem yet nissan won't help, please help myself and other nissan owners before someone dies in an accident from a surging/slipping transmission. i just want this problem to go away.

Took the car to dealership and they detected that the timing chain tensioners have worn out and will need replacement. the part is made of cheap plastic and fails in 2005 maxima cars after about 65000 miles. the part cost is about $50 but the labor cost is about $1500. the process of replacing the part requires taking out the engine. this is an expensive car and a poorly designed plastic part is installed which helps control the timing chain of the engine. if the part fails eventually the engine will fail. i am disappointed that this problem showed up after my warrantly has expired. this repair should be paid for by nissan and not by the customers.

Transmission, experiencing jerking when in 1st & 2nd gear. even when im on the freeway when i slow down and try to speed up again my car will hesitate and jump into gear. i also was exiting freeway when my vehicle completely shut off, i could not stear, lucky for me there was no traffic behind me. i had both of my kids with me at the time!! i believe this is a huge problem and have heard many nissan with the same problem. and the corporation is not doing anything to fix the problem. my vehicle barely reache 70,000 miles and im getting a transmission put in!

Car has stalled on a number of occasions. from a stop, the car will not accelerate nor go into gear, then after a few minutes the car will slam into gear and send the car lurching forward. it actually feels as though someone has hit you from behind. luckily i was always a distance away from the car in front of me and/or not close enough to other vehicles. someone is going to be killed from a situation such as this. i have been told that i need a whole new transmission. there are many, many similar defects noted on-line with 04', 05', 06' and 07' nissans. i have also been told by nissan dealers that nissan is replacing transmissions on 07' models but not on the earlier vehicles & that there is a known defect in their valve body which results in failed transmissions.
06/01/2010
I bought my used car from a local nissan dealership with aprx. 74000 miles on it in feb 2010. shortly after i started feeling the transmission shifting roughly in the lower gears. i took it in to a reputable repair shop in june 2010 and they could not find any kind of diagnostic codes in the computer for the transmission, but told me the engine mounts were broken and needed replacing. i replaced the engine mount and also had them flush and put in fresh transmission fluid at that time as well. again very shortly after i started feeling the transmission shifting roughly and it progressively got worse and even started slipping intermittently!! i took my car back to the repair shop and they could not find any codes again. i did some research online and found that hundreds of 2004 and 2005 nissan maxima owners were having the same exact problems!!! i have searched for any recalls, but there are none!! i took the car back to the dealership were i bought it from and spoke with the service manager and he stated that he has dealt with this issue with owners of this make, model ,and year!! i filed a complaint with nissan and spoke with their consumer affairs dept, but the are not willing to help in any way. i believe, as well as hundreds of other owners, that nissan knows about this defect, but is unwilling to issue a recall to the public!!! i think this is completely irresponsible and negligent on nissan's behalf and has shattered my faith in their company.

Failure of timing chain & tensioners. upon hearing whining noise took 2005 maxima to dealer who verified noise was due to an impending failure of the timing chains and tensioners. researched problem & discover that this manufacturing defect involved engines made from 2004 to 2007 affecting maxima's, quest's, altima's, pathfinder's, &xterrra's. we contacted nissan usa & were informed that nissan had no responsibility for this problem and since our 36,000 miles had expired we were on our own. (case #6392191) no choices left we paid this replacement of defective parts to the price tag of $2800.93. appealed to nissan usa again but was treated like the proverbial red-headed son even though we have purchased 3 new nissan maxima's in the last 10 years. there is no way that we did anything to make this problem occur. it is a case of manufacturing defective parts!!! *tr

Timing chain problem with 2005 nissan maxima. after having my transmission replaced (different complaint), the dealer told me that there was a known problem with the timing chain guides breaking and that my timing chain and corresponding parts needed to be replaced for $1600. i thought this was a problem because my car is not old and should not need this repair. i did research on the internet and found hundreds of cases with the same defect in nissan maxima's. i would like my complaint heard and a possible recall done if possible. this is clearly a nissan defect and problem and not normal wear and tear on the car. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 nissan maxima. while driving approximately 50 mph, the check engine light illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle lost all power and shut off. the contact took the vehicle to a repair shop and they discovered that the crank sensor failed. the mechanic reset the sensor. he took the vehicle to the nissan dealer and they stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 03v455000 (engine and engine cooling). the current and failure mileages were 68,174.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 20mph the engine stalled without warning. afterwards, the check engine light illuminated. additionally, the engine was difficult to start after sitting for a prolonged period of time. the vehicle was driven to an independent repair shop where a diagnostic test was performed. although the code indicated the crank position sensor failed, the vehicle was not inspected. the manufacturer was also not alerted.

Wow! this is crazy! i have the same problem> i have a 2005 nissan maxima and lately about a month ago whem i put my car in drive it jerks big time. this is on and off. i took it to the nissan dealer for them to say it was my motor mounts and they needed to be replaced. well after hearing all these complaints it looks like i will just waste money to get these mounts replaced. my car has 81,000 miles on it and its been driven lightly and babied> i dont understand why they will not have a recall on this. noone should have to pay money for an issue thats obviously messing people over!

I brought my car to nissan for service because i heard a whining noise coming from the engine. i was informed by nissan that the timing chain on my vehicle may need to be replaced. i have a 2005 nissan maxima with only 50,000 miles. if this part is not replaced, the car will stop immediately and will require towing. i'm disturbed by this issue, because nissan was made aware of this issue with their 2005-2008 models, since 2006, and have only listed this as a bulletin. there have been many complaints and forums on this issue, however they do not deem this as a recall. i feel this is a safety issue, because if a vehicle halts in the middle of a highway, this can be a disaster waiting to happen. also there may be extensive damage to the engine. i also have a 1995 maxima that has never undergone a timing chain replacement. i'm hoping that someone will look into this issue. *tr

I have a 2005 nissan maxima and the engine keeps on slipping. it happens about 30% of the time when i'm shifting to first gear. i when the a transmission shop and had everything checked and they changed my transmission oil, but after about 2 weeks the slipping started again. i have read online that i'm not the only person having this problem with 04-06 nissan maximas. there are a lot people having engine slips with this car. *tr

I purchased a new 2005 nissan maxima on feb. 12 2005. since my purchase i have had to bring the car back to the dealership soon after the purchase. the first problem was that the throttle went out and had to be replaced. now on 01/16/06 the entire engine has to be replaced. the dealership states that the vehicle has thrown a rod. my car is not even a year old yet, brand new with less than 10,000 miles on it. i will be without a vehicle for 2-3 weeks. i have been a loyal nissan owner for over 13 yrs. i have purchased nothing but nissan vehicles since moving to texas. i am so upset that i can't even put it to words, i will never, ever, buy another nissan product due to all the hard aches i have gone through with the purchase of my new vehicle. i can't even enjoy the vehicle because it spends half the time in the service department. i want to get out from under my lease, unsure if i can even do that. then trying to contact your company has been a living nightmare. i could cry right now. you want a complaint you got a big one. now, what are you going to do about it! i need someone in charge to contact me asap. i will contact my news station, local radio station whatever it takes and let everyone in the entire state of tx. know how i have been treated by nissan motors. *jb

I purchased a nissan maxima sl at the start of november 2004. a harness inside the engine containing a sensor to detect engine knocks was damaged by a rodent. this caused the engine to misfire which caused the transmission to buck, stop shifting, change speed of the car on it's own, lose acceleration, not shift, shift suddenly and put the driver in a situation where if they did not compensate they could be injured or killed. the problem started when i bought the car and worsened over the next three thousand miles of driving. the dealer and manufacturer ignored the problem and said they could not duplicate it until i said i would pay for them to plug the engine into a diagnostic computer. at this point they found a misfire code, the problem was identified my the master mechanic and the dealer replaced the harness at my expense! the manufacture refused to take responsibility for a dangerous defect. this is a defect in their computer logic and/or design. a sensor malfunction should not cause an engine misfire and transmission to fail. note the date of november 3 2004 indicates that the problem started when i purchased the car and it continued until the harness was replaced. i have contacted the manufacturer many times and they are not returning my calls. the master mechanic said he has seen this problem many times before which tells me that this is perhaps a long standing problem that nissan chooses to ignore.
