Odi received 14 reports of alleged engine stalling due to alternator failure on my 2003-2004 murano (subject) vehicles.all of the complaints reported that the vehicle could not be restarted after the stall occurred.based on these complaints, odi opened pe04-077 and later upgraded to ea05-006 for the subject vehicles.during ea05-006, additional failure data were identified as noted in the failure report summary above.on july 12, 2005, nissan notified nhtsa of a safety defect on my 2003-2005 murano vehicles produced from april 8, 2002 and september 24, 2004 (recall 05v-319).the notification stated that an open circuit in the alternator can occur due to wire fatigue caused by movement of the rotor coil during rapid changes in engine speed in vehicles equipped with a continuously variable transmission (cvt).higher engine compartment temperature in the murano compared to other nissan models may also be a contributing factor to the wire fatigue.nissan also reported that when this happens, the charge warning and brake warning lamps will illuminate and the battery will begin to discharge.after a short time, the engine will then enter a fail safe mode that limits vehicle speed.very shortly after reaching this condition, the engine will stop.nhtsa's testing, however, showed that although the warning lamps illuminate, the vehicle speed is limited to only 4-7 mph rather than what nhtsa considers a fail safe mode. nissan will instruct owners to return their vehicles to any nissan dealer for an alternator inspection and replacement, if required.note:some vehicles may have had the newly designed alternator previously installed under warranty.consequently, this investigation is closed.odi will monitor the effectiveness of the remedy and take further action if warranted.

It was hot outside. i was on a major highway and all of a sudden i was unable to accelerate then the car lost power. i had to have my vehicle towed to a mechanic to find out my fuel pump fuse blew. since then within a month time my car has lost power twice and abruptly stopped running on a major highway going about 55 mph. putting myself and kids in a very dangerous situation. after sitting for about 20 minutes the first time and a hour the second time i pumped the gas pedal, turned the key and it started right up. i purchased my 2003 murano only 4 months ago and never thought i would be here today scared to drive. nissan needs to take these complaints much more seriously before someone lose their life behind this defect. ## vin passed ## nissan murano 2003 ##. *tr

Please help! i have been having issues with this car ever since i bought it at this small dealer in arlington va. saturday march 3, 2012, my nissan murano stalled. i am afraid the car will stall when i am driving on the highway and this could be a safety issues for me and other innocent people. this is not the first time it stalled. today my driver side window is stuck and won't move up or down. must be some electrical problem. i have contacted nissan on issues with this car before and they refused to help me. can someone point me in the right direction as to who i need to talk to and who can help me to get this resolved? i truly believe this car needs to be recalled and is not included in the past recalls that have been recorded. sincerely, lisa

Driving 60 mph when vehicle suddenly stopped running. brake and engine lights came on. was unable to get off roadway and other vehicle had to turn sharply to avoid hitting me. this was the first incident. have had two incidents since.

Second owner, purchased with 63000 miles. first occurrence was driving on the highway a short distance (45min) started to notice the speed pulsing on flat stretches of road with the cruise control being set at 60 mph. i would manually take over the gas pedal just to have to constantly give it more gas then less gas to maintain 60 on flat ground. to the point of nailing it to maintain 60 then out of no where it would start to go accelerate suddenly up and i would let off the gas to stay @ 60mph and hold the pedal there for about 20 secs just to lose power on flat ground again and would just repeat over and over. when i got off the exit ramp it was sputtering really bad and had a hard time just getting it home w/o hurting myself or others. next day nothing. then over time (1 month) it happened 4 other times but is seeming to get worse. then today i stopped in town at a red light. when it came time to go the care jus sat there and the rpm gauge moved up but the car didn't move forward. i immediately put on hazards, put car in park, shut it off, then restarted it to luckily be able to pull off. went on highway home going 60mph and the surging back and forth with power to weakness to sudden power was the worst its ever been. car isn't under warranty due to being 2nd owner but come on nissan really? i'm a student/new father and the $ is crunched like most families now in this economy. i bought a nissan b/c its reputation of quality and endurance/resillience. i would be sick if this injured my baby b/c this car wasn't in the original recall range. it is very dangerous and could lead to both my tires locking up on the highway going 60 or even faster leaving not only us in jepoardy but everyone around me on the road also.

Since i purchased my 2003 nissan murano, i have had several failures with it that the dealer has either claimed they cannot reproduce, has failed to fix or indicates that my model is not part of a recall effort, even when my car is reproducing the very same symptoms the recalls state they address. the last incident was the alternator and the failure of the cam position sensors and crank position sensors. both have caused the vehicle to simply stop in ongoing traffic creating an obvious safety hazard for my family! does someone have to actually die before nmac will accept responsibility for faulty construction with the murano? this is not the first life-threatening incident i have had with this car!!! i was on the interstate doing 70 mph when all of a sudden the engine died!!! i completely lost acceleration on interstate 70 at 10:30 p.m. at night with small children in the car! what did the dealership do to rectify this situation? replaced the alternator that was already on recall and threatened to charge me for the cost until i threatened legal action...then, all of a sudden, nmac took care of it!

While driving on the toll road in houston, my vehicle lost speed and power going up an overpass, and luckily i was able to pull off to the shoulder before complete loss of power. the check engine light came on prior to this event. i was able to crank the engine but it would not start. my passenger needed medical assistance due to the heat (100 degrees), and my vehicle had to be towed to the nissan dealer. this dealer indicated a dtcode p0340, cam sensor and crank sensor failure, and repairs totaled $765.93. researching this failure, i learned that there was an earlier recall of my exact vehicle for this failure, but my vin was not included in the recall. after searching the internet, i discovered many, many other owners of 2003 muranos with vin numbers outside of the recall are experiencing the exact same problem as the recall. here's a link to just one of several sites: http://www.thehappyrock.com/2007/11/15/have-your-car-fixed-for-free-auto-recalls-and-my-2003-nissan-murano/ calls to nissan usa, requesting they consider a recall of my vehicle, were denied. i am requesting via this complaint that the recall of 2003 muranos be expanded to include all vehicles with the failure code(s) relating to the cam sensor/crank sensor. the problem is a faulty weld, and although nissan denies a relationship between their earlier production failures and my auto's failure, there is a definite problem with their weld. i feel fortunate that i did not have my children in the car, and that i was able to steer to the side of the road on the tollroad before stalling. with the average tollroad speed well over 70 mph, my safety and the safety of my passenger was in question due to the location of the breakdown. i hope this never happens to anyone with young children or elderly passengers in the vehicle.

The passenger side door lock is not locking or unlocking completely when using the remote or key. it appears to be locked, but the door can be opened from outside the car and visa versa. starting in may 2011, the driver's side door lock is doing the same thing. i'm also unable to enter the vehicle through neither of the front doors and have to enter through the back doors to unlock the front doors manually from the inside. this is a safety issue as i or a passenger can get locked out of the car or think the door is locked while in the car and someone from the outside could gain access. in case of emergency, i may or may not be able to get into or out of the car. starting in november 2010 while raising the window on the passenger side with the power window button, it automatically lowers on it's own on occasion. it stops when half open. to keep it closed, i have to inch it up slowly. again this is a safety issue. the lock to the gas cap failed to open around 40,000 miles.

Murnao has been maintained wth all oil changes/schd mx done by the book. couple of days ago i was sitting in line at a drive thru and the car abruptly died. there were no warning lights prior to the event. the service engine soon light came on then went back off after a restart. then yesterday it died while slowing to a stop sign at aprox 15 mph. this time the service light stayed on after the restart. again this morning it died, this time in traffic while traveling at aprox 50 mph. parked the murano and borrowed a friends car for the rest of the day. did my homework online and noticed the recall for this engine stall. got the engine codes from a local shop and suprise; camshaft position/crank position sensors. of course when i called nissan my vin is not affected by the recall 03v455000. contacted local nissan dealer, est repair costs $600+. nissan is not holding up its end of thier deal on this vehicle. please take note, do not buy nissan.

We purchased a new 2003 nissan murano when they first came out. over time we noticed that the car would stall almost all the time after we first started it in the morning. we did not think much about this and just dealt with it after taking it to our nissan dealer who could not tell us what was wrong. this was a few years ago. three days ago my wife was driving home from work and the car just died while she was driving and the service engine light came on. immediatley the next morning we took the car to our local car repair shop in purcellville, va to have the car looked at. i did not fee comfortable taking the car to our nearest nissan dealer 30 miles away given what just happened. the repair shop called and said our car had a voluntary recall for camshaft position sensors and they was causing the problem. they printed out the recall and told me to call nissan to have them fix the problem instead of having to pay my local repair shop. i called our nissan dealership and reporting my problem and they told me the vin of my car was not part of the voluntary recall. i said if i have the problem and it has been verified why would you not fix it-- its not safe! long story short - i took the car to a nissan dealership and they also confirmed that my car has the problem but that nissan will not fix. i find this horrible and need your help.

I own a 2003 nissan murano. i bought the vechile several months ago.. last night we were driving on a very curvy mountain road when a car came into sight. when we switched to dim, the lights went out completely. this put us in total darkness. it took a minute to adjust our eyes and realize what happened. this has happened on several occasions. the dimmer switch is on the steering wheel. the switch to turn them off is on the end of the dimmer handle. we keep our runner lights on each time we are driving the car. some how when you go to switch the lights the knob turns to off, which makes them go out, when you switch from bright to dim and from dim to bright. this is a very scary situation to be in. i wonder if other folks have had a similar problem. we were very fortunate that we did not crash.

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 nissan murano. while driving approximately 40 to 50 mph, the vehicle shut off without warning. the check engine indicator illuminated after the failure occurred. the vehicle shut off a total of four times, but was able to be restarted. the contact took the vehicle to the repair shop for a diagnosis and the camshaft position sensor was initially determined to be the cause of the failure. the mechanic then stated that if the camshaft position sensor was replaced, it would not correct the failure. the contact was informed that the real issue was with the computer and electrical system in the vehicle. he was advised to take the vehicle to the dealer for a diagnosis. the manufacturer stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 03v455000 (engine and engine cooling). the contact will take the vehicle to the dealer to be diagnosed. the current and failure mileages were 41,000. updated 3/27/09 *cn updated 04/01/09.(jb

When in traffic under appx 10 mph, you accelerate and it does nothing, then suddenly takes off. you don't know when it is going to happen. it is very random and once it starts doing it, it keeps doing it until you stop the engine and restart the car. i have to pull out on a busy street in the afternoon, and have almost been hit. i have taken it to two nissan dealerships and all they do is say it is a vacuum line. they said i needed new motor mounts to keep the engine stable so that they won't get loose. i had them replaced and it did not fix the problem. the problem does not throw an error code, so no one, including a very reputable auto repair garage, can fix it. we have even started guessing what the problem might be, ie, fuel injectors - had them cleaned - no change. i have now spent almost $3k and i still have the same problem. nissan tells me that there is a recall, but not for my serial number. i have been dealing with this since about may. *tr

I was traveling out of town alone with my 3 children and after we had been on the road for about 3 1/2 hours, the front windshield wipers came on by themselves along with the back windshield wipers, the lights were going on and off by themselves, the left blinker came on by itself, and the dash information (dte, fuel economy) was just coming on and off by itself. there was water coming out of the fuse box on the drivers side, and you could hear a sizzling sound. i took it to the nearest nissan dealer, they said they fix it and i got back on the road and it happened again 2 hours later same stuff. i just turned off the ac and kept driving with everything going crazy, because all the service departments were closed and i could not get anyone to help me. when i arrived at my destination i took it to the nearest nissan dealership the next day and they said that the ac hose was loose and was allowing water to get into everything. i hope it is fixed, but i am now scared to drive it anywhere and i have to travel 6 hours away from home every now and then because i have a child 6 hours away from home in college and you never know when i will have to go up there unexpectedly. i am thing about trading it off because i do not feel safe in it anymore, but the trade in value is a lot less than the pay off. *jb

While driving down one of the busiest 8 lane highways in tampa my car decided that it didn't want to stay cranked and died right smack in the middle of the intersection. luckily, my room mate was behind me and jumped out to help me push it back into the parking lot. we assumed it was out of gas, which it wasn't. afterwards, we realized that we tried to jump the car off because now it wasn't turning over. it cranked , and i made it to the intersection. again, it died on me once more. so we left the car overnight in barnes and noble parking lot. i came back sunday afternoon may 1, 2005 and replaced the battery. it cranked right up. i drove 2 miles home. then 6 miles to north tampa, only to have my car die pulling into the parking lot of a friend's apartment complex. i let it sit for a few hours, cranked it up and it cranked. then managed to make it to the on ramp of i75 south, only to have it die again. it wa s now sitting at a friends house. i managed to drive it 1 mile an hour in idle into someone's apartment complex, where it now sits waiting for someone to tow it to the nissan dealership.*ak

Nissan murano has dangerous design defects compounded by unresolved electronics problems. design flaws: 1) ineffective defroster system , 2) long-armed wipers clog easily, 3) all doors must be unlocked to get gas (inviting carjackers). the defroster-wiper problem was made worse by electronics. while i was clearing windows the car locked in 13 degree weather. *ak the car: 1) locks doors at random intervals , 2) puts the windows down without warning (the service manager says, don't not leave valuables in this car!), 3) the remote entry system often does not beep requiring that i check all doors (especially given the other problems with locks), 4) now the car sometimes tells me that the driver's door is open (when it is not). the car is virtually new (less than 6,000 miles). nissan knows they have this problem. there is an internal service memo it. but when consumers complain they are stone-walled with, we could not duplicate the problem. last friday my caracted up at the dealership. the service manager acknowledged in writing on nissan letterhead. this problem exists and it is in a number of models -- maxima, altima, titan trucks, and muranos. nissan shouldrecall all of the affected vehicles, provide rental cars while repairs are made, and to issue credit vouchers for all of the past aggravation they caused by their failing to provide good-faith solutions to the problems they know exist.

I was pulling off the freeway when my car started to hesitate. when i got to the light my car stalled and the panel lights dimmed. after some time i was able to get to a safe place to call aaa and i towed the car to the dealer. i was told it was the alternator and they didn't have the part and i had to wait over a week and 1/2 before i was able to get my car back. *tr

Heard noise from engine compartment under low rpm range. took vehicle to local nissan dealer for inspection of problem and mechanic could not duplicate but was advised by shop mechanic about worn drive belt. vehicle is @ 34,000 miles. upon investigation at home from top of engine bay, i noticed ac/alternator idler pulley was vibrating and rotating of axis to the crack pulley. i investigated online at www.nissanmurano.org for similar problems. i found a series of reports that the bracket that holds the idle pulley was broken and causes cutting into the adjustment arm and causing the noise (eventually failing). returned vehicle to the dealer and informed dealer of idler pulley problem researched online and request belt service. when mechanic removed the belt, the idler pulley assembly was found to be broken. i believe this is a serious design issue and nissan should provide a better design and recall a $16 part. potential issues of failure of pulley: 1) nearby vicinity of the radiator coolant return hose can cut by broken bracket and can cause engine to overheat. 2) could lead to an alternator not providing energy to the car and a more serious consequences. *tr updated 01/11/08. *lj updated *jb

Consumer is seeking reimbursement for recall failure. mc the consumer stated upon contacting the dealer to see if the warranty covered the mechanical failure, she was informed there was a recall issued for this vehicle with the same problem she was encountering with the vehicle which was the alternator. the car was purchased in july 05 but the recall was issued back in may of 05, so that might be why the consumer was not informed. however, the consumer is surprised to know that the dealer did not replace the alternator due to the recall prior to the purchase of the vehicle. the consumer provided a copy of the invoice and would like to be reimbursed for the repairs. *tr

Nissan murano 2003 service engine check lightcame on and vehicle slowed down on the freeway and i had to find a shoulder after an overpass bridge to pull over for my safe and for my 2 toodlers children. i check the recall on the internet for this and it was a recall back in 2003 that i did not recieve a notice in the mail. i call a car dealer and denying me for the recall. i call the consumer affair customer service and 7/2/2007 and case is pending. i feel so unsafe to drive this vehicle because since 2003 this vehicle has five recalls such as gas tank, set belt, engine and engine cooling, transmission nut not tighten enough and alternator.*ak

There was a recall on the alternator for my 2003 nissan murano, this resulted in a tested failure with my battery, once tested with the nissan registered battery tester however there was then no perceived problem. after requesting that it be replaced for my safety they refused and i contacted nissan customer service. after 8 weeks i still had not been in contact with a regional specialist and yesterday my battery died on me. fortunately this was within a safe environment at my work. i am currently 8 weeks pregnant and went through a lot of stress and exertion at a very dangerous time in order to have the car safely towed to the nearest nissan dealership. my concern is this could have happened anywhere and would have left me unsafely abandoned. *jb

In early january 2005, the charge warning and brake warning lights came on while operating my 2003 nissan murano. as a result, i contacted nissan service dept in my city. i took it in, they replaced the battery and the alternator without charge. however, the service department was not aware of problems with the nissan of this nature. they did indicate that a couple had been in recently for the same problem. because my car was under warranty, it was free repairs, however the repairs were not done in a timely manner since they were not going to be getting any money from me. i'm a single mom with two kids who relies on the safety and accessibility of my vehicle. to be driving a car with these kind of problems could have been tragic. the inconvenience of not having a vehicle is hindering given the need to attend work and school for the kids. i wish someone would have said something more than 8 months ago. *jb

After using my 2003 nissan murano in the morning to take my one daughter to school, my younger daughter & i returned home for an appointment. afterward, we got back in the car to run errands. upon starting the car, the battery warning light and brake warning light both illuminated. assuming that this wasn't good, we proceeded to the dealership to figure out what was wrong. about 1 mile away from the dealership, the car died on us and - thankfully - we coasted into a gas station. i placed a call directly to the dealership to inform them of the situation and they responded quite quickly - for which i was grateful as my month-old daughter was with me in the car and without a/c it would have gotten quite warm. my complaint isn't with the service i received, but with the fact that i was not informed of this recall until after the problem occurred with my car. even upon bringing the car to the dealership, no one informed me that there was an issue with the alternator (i.e., the recall) until after the repair work had been performed. and we didn't receive an official notice from nissan until one week after the incident.

April 2003 purchased a 2003 nissan murano. in july 2003, after having been stopped at a traffic light, i pressed the gas to go forward and the car would not accelerate for a few seconds, then it quickly surged forward. luckily i was the first car at the light or i would have rammed the car in front of me. the dealer regal nissan said it was the alternator and replaced it. in june 2005 again, the car started stalling then quickly accelerating, we had moved so we took the car to a local nissan dealership crown nissan and they, again, replaced the alternator. july 29, 2005, on a trip to florida, the car acted up again at the red lights, it also would slow down, while driving, then accelerate quickly. i again took the car to the dealership kraft nissan of tallahassee and they stated it was a transmission issue and then advised i take to my hometown dealer, crown nissan.cown nissan was not able to diagnose or produce any problem. they did not call kraft nissan and seek advice or input from them. i am having trouble getting them to solve the problems. it is dangerous, because of the sudden acceleration, you could hit another car or a person. we are fortunate because there have been others who have stalled on the interstate or busy highways. something is wrong when they continually replace the alternator and still have problems. *jb

My 2003 nissan murano is in the shop have to the alternator replaced for the third time in less than a year. the first time time it went out was in sept-04. it was under warranty and the dealer came and towed it to the dealership and replaced it. i had the same problem one month ago on my way to california from utah. i had the car towed to the dealer. they said it was the alternator and the battery. it cost over$500.00for parts and labor plus the cost of the tow. three days ago it went out again. this time they said that the alternator was still under warranty but we had to pay for the tow again. i am afraid to drive it out of town. i just read that there is a recall thanks to your organization. i hope the delership will be able to correct the problem w/o the recall letter. i would also like to see a refund.

Brake and battery lights lit up and the vehicle lost power to accelerate/keep up with 65 mph traffic on i-50 east highway. need to crawl back to dealership and drive under 40 mph speed, very dangerous! every cars behind me literally need to slam their brakes as i was slowing down the traffic on the left lane. dealer's diagnostic was: the infamous alternator failure on this vehicle model.

The battery and brake lights came on in my murano, but the car appeared to still be driving and starting just fine, so i assumed it was merely a short and decided to wait until my next service. 2 days later, the car lost power while driving, the accelerator would not respond and eventually stalled, despite being able to turn over again after stopping. i have since discovered tha this is a common problem among murano owners related to alternators.

My wife was driving by herself at night approximately 25 miles from our home. as she was driving on the interstate the brake light and battery light came on. the dash became dim and the vehicle began to lose power. she was able to get the vehicle to a nearby gas station. i was informed that the alternator went out. the car was towed and is now at a dealer waiting to be serviced.

As i pulled into my garage, i noticed the battery warning light and brake light were on on the instrument panel of my 2003 nissan murano. because i have read on nissanmurano.org that is an indication of a failing alternator and that after seeing the warning lights my murano would soon become totally disabled, i called the dealer to have the vehicle towed in for a new alternator. although in my case i was in my garage, the alternator is a known isssue on muranos, and if the vehicle stops on the highway, that would be extremely dangerous. some muranos have been known to have a failure of the replacement alternator, so i don't feel that this issue has been resolved yet, and i fear i may still be at risk.
07/07/200531000109/01/2003
I was driving down the highway, when the brake and battery lights came on. this 2003, nissan murano had just completed the 30,000 mile check up 6 days before. suddenly, the car power steering failed, the car's electrical systems went haywire and the car seized up. i was forced to slowly slide over to the shoulder of the freeway, where i had to have the car towed.

Battery and brake lights came on. i knew from reading posts on a murano forum that this was a possible symptom of imminent alternator failure. i was only a mile from home when the lights came on, so i was able to get home safely. i do, however, reside over 20 miles from the nearest dealer. in order to get it to the dealer for service, i drove my other car to the store and purchased a battery tester/charger. i knew from the forum that i may be able to drive to the dealer in this state if the battery had a full charge. when i tested it, it was only operating @ 60%. i charged it fully, then drove to the dealer to have the car checked out. i must say that it was no fun driving to the dealer (on the highway) knowing that at any time i could lose all power. i stayed in the right hand lane all the way so that i could pull over in a hurry if needed. turns out it was the alternator. the old part is not available. they told me they had to install a remanufactured part, and send the failed part to nissan. i don't even have 19,000 miles on this vehicle. things like this should not be happening on a $30,000 car! i feel lucky that i knew about this problem with my car, and was on the look out for the lights. if i had been unaware, as most are, things could have been worse. who knows when i would have noticed these lights? the car could have lost all power at night on the highway that i travel every day!

I was driving on the freeway when the battery and brake light came on. i barely exited the freeway and found a gas station before the car died. there are 36,400 miles on my car and foothill nissan told me that the warranty covered only until 36,000. they won't replace the defective alternator since i am 400 miles over the warranty limit. then i realized that i wasn't the only one who was going through this. there are many other complaints of the exact thing that happened to me. i was lucky that i didn't get into an accident and there wasn't as much traffic as there usually is on the freeway that day and i was able to hurry off without the car stopping in the middle of the freeway.

The first time occured in oct. of 2004, when i was driving in town, thankfully, and lost all of my power. i was only driving about 30 mph. my car had to be towed, and the alternator was replaced. then, on june10, 2005, i was traveling on the highway, at night about 55 mph, and again lost all power. i again had to be towed, and the alternator was replaced again, but this time, my battery also had to be replaced, which we had to pay half the price. this car is only 2 years old and has had 2 alternators, and nissan of north america says there is ' no problem' with this car or model. i consider this to be a major safety problem, if someone had been behind me, or if i could not have steered off the road.

 1) my wife was driving the car to work and the battery and brake light came on. i told her that i thought it was probably due to low brake fluid and that i'd check it when she got home in the evening. 2) on her way home from work, the car suddenly dies in the middle of the interstate (i495) during rush hour. this is probably the most dangerous time on the interstate due to the great volume of traffic traveling at very high speed. fortunately, she was able to coast to the shoulder without being rear ended. the car had to be towed back to our house. i did some research on the internet and came across a nissan murano forum which had a detail desciption of this particular problem. if i had received some type on notification on this problem, i would not have put my wife life in jeopardy by advising her to take the car home. 3) i will be contacting the nissan dealership for repairs.

In february 2005 the alternator failed to charge the battery and the car slowed to a complete stop and the battery died in the middle of a busy intersection. i had to tow the car to the nearest dealership and the car was repaired 48 hours later. in march 2005 the gas tank lid wouldn't open and the car was running out of gas. i drove the car to the dealership and it took 48 hours to repair. however, the repair was done by prying the lid open and i still have not recieved the new part. in may 2005 the transmission failed in the middle of a busy intersection and i had to tow the car to the dealership. they still have the car and expect to have it for two weeks at least. they cannot guarentee that they will pay for the rental car costs which will amount to at least $350 at $25 a day. this car only has 35,000 miles on it.

While driving home from work approximately 3.5 miles on july 22nd 2004, i noticed the brake and battery lamps were illuminated on the dashboard of my 2003 nissan murano se awd manufactured in march 2003. after contacting university dealership in lansing, mi on july 23rd 2004, i was informed to bring it in right away. i drove it about 10 miles that day without a change in behavior from the vehicle but the lamps were still on. later that day i was informed it would need a new alternator. i did not hear about any progress until august 2nd 2004 which is 10 days later. the dealership claimed the alternator was ordered the previous friday (30 july) and should be in late today or tomorrow. i received no update until 7 days later (august 10th) when i called the dealer and was informed the alternator had come in and it should be done the next day. on august 10th, i was allowed to pick up the repaired vehicle. in total i was without the vehicle for 18 consecutive days while waiting for a replacement for a faulty alternator which are in short supply. i was still responsible for making loan payments during the 18 days i was not able to use the vehicle and had to arrange alternate transportation to where i work. the nature of the failure could have lead to a serious safety concern as the antilock brakes were disabled, and if the vehicle had lost power (some do, sometimes due to simultaneous battery failure) control of the vehicle could have been lost. it is also an imposition on the customer to have to wait an extended period for replacements to be delivered for commonly faulty parts. the alternator failing in the murano is not an infrequent occurrence, it appears to happen in a large percentage of vehicles. one discussion forum and poll relating to the matter can be found here: http://www.nissanmurano.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2113. *jb

On aoril 30, 2005, my vehicle 2003 nissan murano's engine stopped running and stranded my wife in middle of night causing major inconvenience in serving her patients at er. when i took the car to dealer, their initial assessment was to replace battery, which i agreed reluctantly (it is very uncommon for batter to go bad in 2 years). then they advised me that alternator needs to replace which will be covered by warranty. i told them since alternator caused the battery to get discharge, i felt that nissan should pay for that too. the dealer said that they can not. however, about couple of weeks, i recvd a recall notification sating the following: on some 2003-2005 nissa murano vehicles, there is a possibility that a wire breaking inside alternator could stop the battery from charging. if this happens (which happened in my case), the charge warning lamps will immediately come on and the battery will begin to discharge. after short time, the engine will go into a fail safe condition which will limit vehicle speed. very shortly after this, the engine wll stop running. this could result in a crash. this is exactlywhat happened in our case that caused battery to go bad. nissan clearly responsible for battery too.

Battery and brake indicator lights on dashboard came on. next evening (approximately 10 miles later), the lights dimmed and electrical accessories failed while driving down a 4 lane road. moments later the car went into limp mode (less than 5 mph). i was able to navigate off the road, but couldn't move very far. the engine would run fine (while the car was in park or neutral), but would immediately go into limp mode when shifted into gear. following a couple of restarts ... the battery finally went completely dead and couldn't restart engine. towed to nissan ... replaced alternator.*ak

Car had lost power on a few occassions a year ago, which was brought to nissans attention. they performed diagnostics and said there were no codes. shortly there after the vehicles battery went dead. took it to nissan, they replaced it, and charged us for the battery. approximately 6 months later we got loss of power again followed by brake and battery light coming on then car died. after research i see there was a tsb but no one at the dealership told me about it even after i had asked them if there had been any tsbs issued since this was the first year of the vehicles exsistance. my wife was driving the car when the loss of power occurred and thank god she was not hit!!!!! *ak

 (1) vehichle was operating normally, then the battery and brake warning lights came on. 2) while driving down the interstate looking for a dealership, the entire car shut down, including the engine and braking. i had to cross 2 lanes of interstate traffic to get to the shoulder without power or adequate braking. at the time, i was travelling out of town and was stranded in a city where i knew no one. (3) after being towed to a dealer, the day after i was told the alternator and battery were both bad. a new alternator had to be ordered but there were none in the immediate area and didn't know when one would be available. the alternator and battery were eventually replaced at no cost to me, 3 working days after arriving. old parts are not available.*ak pe04077_cat

Vehicle jerked violently then dies! dealer claims it is the crankshaft sensor. replaced sensor. happened 3-more times until manufacturer finally authorized complete replacement of sensor terminal connectors.it has been in the shop over 5-total weeks up till now including all 4 attempts to fix. they assured that this would fix the problem. however it happened again on 3/11/04. we have given the manufacturer its final opportunity before proceeding with our lemon law rights, they simply reacted by trying to find a loophole in the process, so we are now proceeding with legal action against nissan now on our 5th time of this occurence.*ak

3 times my murano has stalled while driving and would not restart. all 3 times it has to be towed (over a 2 month period approx. 4k miles now, started at just over under 3k). the first 2 times, the engine would at least turn, but not start. the last time it would not even turn. it seems to be temporary because when the dealer loosk at the next day, it starts and they say they can't find anything wrong with it.

I just bought a 2003 nissan murano, recently i have had a few problems with the car. first problem, after driving about 30 miles and then shutting the engine off and then turning on the alarm. after about ten minutes i would disable the alarm and start the car. the car will not start it doesn't even turnover. this has happened twice once when my wife was driving it and when i was driving it. luckily it happened to start for my wife after several tries. can someone please investigate this defect? by the way, i had to get the car towed to dealer and it is still there.

*jb
