Defect SummaryOn certain sport utility vehicles, the nut that attaches the transmission gear selector shaft to the control valve lever in the transmission may not be adequately tightened. this could result in the transmission not actually being in the gear indicated by the gear selector lever. in addition, the transmission position display in the instrument panel may not be on or may be incorrect.
Consequence SummaryIf the gear displayed is different from the gear engaged, this could result in unexpected vehicle movement and a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will check the affected nut in the transmission shift lever linkage, and tighten it if necessary. owner notification began april 15, 2003. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

The nissan dealer told us in january that there was a fluid pressure drop and wanted to replace seals for around $1,700. in february the dealer told us the transmission valve body needed to be replaced for $1,700 plus resetting the tcm for another $300. i believe nissan knows full well there is a problem with this design and they need to issue a recall to fix these problems.

Initially, this car would stop in the middle of intersection and on the highway due to a faulty alternator. i almost got in an accident . the car would loss power and then take off and finally the car would stop on a busy highway. i almost got killed 3 times due the car stalling out on me. the transmission died on me 3 times. the first two times, i had only 20-30,000 miles. ( i puchased the car brand new). the very last time they replaced the transmission (costing me $6, 000) i had about 160,000 miles. even after having nissan replace the transmission 3 times, the car still stalls or shuts off while in motion. about a year ago, i had new cat convertors installed, a new manifold and exhuast installed. it ran for about 6 months and now it is still stalling out and stopping (while in motion) me. this is very dangerous. now nissan thinks the crank shaft positioning is the cause of the problem but refuse to do it for free because the vin# to my car is not listed with the rest of the 2003 murano's (recall list). this i think is ridiculus. it seems to me that nissan has alot problems with their older murano's with regards to stalling, stopping suddenly while in motion. they seem to care less if the owners life is at risk. i have been dealing with these issues, since i first purchased the car. it is a piece of junk and it is an extreme hazard to drive on the highway.

Was driving on a highway and heard thumping sounds from the engine. slowed down towards the side and the noise started increasing. it sounded like someone hitting the engine with a sledge hammer. i parked the car on the side of the highway and looked under the hood and under the car. i saw something leaking. i got my car towed to the nearest dealer and they told me that it was my transfer case. cost to fix was close to $5,000. i contacted nissan for help and they informed me that they couldn't do anything. i asked if this problem was common and they replied no. i had the car fixed at my own expense and 14 months later the problem occurred again. warranty was for 12 months or 12,000 miles which ever came first. i was over by 2 months but mileage was under. they quoted me additional $3,000 to fix. i can not believe that this car has not been recalled for this problem. the car is still at the mechanics because i am still in shock of being forced to pay $8,000 for the same problem and within a little over a year. *tr

Vechicle abrubtly loss power in drive train while accelerating through busy cross section. vechicle progressed no more than 10 miles while pulling off the road. once the engine was turned off, vechicle would ignition did not have power, albeit all other power (windows, lights, etc..) was ok. dealer says abs control unit and transmission failure.

Cvt transmission fails to accelerate after driving at low speeds...ie like thru a parking area or while in heavy stop and go traffic. than while pulling out in traffic will not not respond to the gas pedal while pressing down than it will suddenly surge and rapidly accelerate. i can not safely send my wife or daughter out in this car. had it back to the dealer many times the transfer case for the awd was replaced some time back when it cracked. but the cvt acted up occasionally long before that.!! this is a serious safety issue and should be a recall to repair these transmissions.

I have a 2003 nissan murano se. i was driving out of my house and while still in my neighborhood, the car came to a screeching halt (loud noise). i waited a couple of minutes and tried pressing the accelerator again and the car refused to move but made another very loud sound. i have 2 small children that were fortunately not in the vehicle with me. also fortunate was that i had not turned into a high speed main road that was just coming up. i called aaa and had the car towed to the nissan dealer, who diagnosed it as a transfer case problem and quoted $3300 for replacement of the part. upon researching this issue, my husband and i discovered that this is a standard problem in the earlier nissan murano models - hundreds and hundreds of people have complained about this online and it happens at roughly the same mileage in the life of the vehicle. it is clearly a manufacturing defect and should have been a recall on nissan's part as it is a major safety issue. we contacted nissan customer service and after waiting 10 days, we were basically told they were not going to do anything about it given how old the vehicle was and that they don't acknowledge that this is a manufacturing defect, even after i explained the results of my research. i told them that even if they choose not to believe that others have had the same problem, a transfer case should not give way between 80-90,000 miles - it is simply not acceptable. i am extremely irritated at how nissan handled this problem and am concerned about the safety of others who may end up in the same situation but not be fortunate enough to escape bodily harm. this should be a recall.

My nissan murano was a brand new 2003 it is now 8 years old with 46015 miles. the nissan service department in nh cared for my vehicle regularly; my first problem occurred when the engine started sending out black smoke, i fought for nissan to take responsibility for what was happening to my vehicle, they did; it took six to eight weeks to get the oil smell flushed out of the air conditioner. i understand wear and tear but, major engine faults happening so soon; nissan claims being the top vehicle manufactures. one of the many reasons i bought their brand. i did everything they said to keep my vehicle functioning; then it happened again; the rear powertrain reached its end, and oil leaking in the engine, the piston ball bearings is broken; and now the oil is leaking out. the average miles driven per year is 12000; my vehicle average 1500-miles yearly. i cannot nor will i battle over the 60 months/100,000 miles warranty contract; i am appealing to nissan corporation saying, look and see in my case my vehicles

The vehicles drive train failed and was towed to lia nissan in enfield ct. was told that the cvt transmission had failed and was covered under the 10 yr /120,000 mile extended warranty. they also said that the transfer case was damaged but is not covered by the warranty. the transfer case is part of the cvt and should be covered. i had to purchase the part for 2,100 to repair the vehicle. they may charge for the part to offset the cost of the cvt which costs around 5,000. nissan has a major problem with their drive train and should be covered or recalled.

Leaking transmission transfer case. this is a serious safety issue as the tc can fail at any time. at highway speeds this is a serious safety issue. nissan na has given extended warranty on cvt transmission, but the tc is most likely to fail due to leaks and is not covered under the extended cvt warranty nissan just came out with. many many posts on internet based on this issue. nna will not correct this design defect, even though it is part of the transmission. nna will not honor the transmission extended warranty on the cvt transmission, as they say the tc is not part of the transmission. replacement cost for tc is $3500-$4000 and if it's leaking it will fail. serious safety issue if vehicle is moving, causing potentially bodily injury in a crash, or bodily injury while on side of highway. i contacted nissan north america and they would not address this obvious engineering defect. nissan should be made to be responsible for this defect. the tc part is not designed to survive the life of the vehicle and thousands of people have had this part fail. please help.

My nissan murano 2003 has had this problem 3 months after i bought it. i was on a hill in san francisco and came to a stop sign. all of the sudden the car would not move forward when i stepped on the accelerator; instead it started rolling backward. it was very scary. i turned off the car and restarted and the car responded fine. i thought it was just a fluk. then 5 months later, i was in a stop and of traffic on i80 on my way to lake tahoe. the car refuse to move when i stepped on the accelerator again. i started pressing harder and it lurched forward. it did that over and over again in the stop and go traffic. i finally pulled over and cut off the engine and started back up; the car responded fine thereafter. however, it kept repeating the same problem; each time i will resolve it by restarting the car. luckily, it was under warranty so it was replaced at no cost to me. the car performed without further problem until 2006. the problem reared its ugly head. i took it back in and they said it was a bad battery. so we had that changed, but the problem came back. the mechanic reset the car computer and the problem went away. again, it didn't really cost me much other than the battery. then in 2009, the car again started doing the lurching thing in stop and go traffic. it's always in the same situation. i knew i was out of warranty by then and it would cost me an arm and a leg so i just dealt with it by restarting the car each time and pray the traffic will move faster soon. it's now 2011 and the problem remains. after reading all the complaints from past nissan murano owners, i really think nissan owes us some money. it should've been a recall since most of us paid $35k+ for this car. my car now has 145k miles. i am in the market for a new car. i like the cvt. maybe will try a subaru instead.

In the first quarter of 2010 nissan extended the warranty to cover the failed cvt transmission. the dealer replaced it at no cost to me (nissan covered the parts and labor). on friday december 2, 2011 while the service department in fairfax, virginia was replacing the lower oil pan gasket, and lower oil cooler housing, they noticed the transfer case was starting to fail/crack. informed me that within the next 6 to 12 months this would need to be replaced and this is an 18 hour job. cost estimate is $2,350. they should have informed me of the known transfer case problem last year at a minimum to save the labor cost. at a maximum nissan should recall this known problem and pay for the parts and labor.

2003 murano purchased new and well maintained. we didn't have any problems until one afternoon on our way for vacation the car went from 60 mph to 30 mph the rpm were in the redline. turned motor off and waited a few minutes then started off again with no problem. months went by and everything was fine. the next occurrence happened on my way home from a meeting and it was the same thing. i took the vehicle to a nissian dealership and had it looked at, they found nothing. about 6 months later the car did the same thing and i took it back to same dealer. they said they are not sure but thought it was the transmission. i have noticed a trend with 03 muranos and they have had countless complaints about my same issue. there needs to be a recall before some gets killed.

Transmission appears to be slipping. odbii code is p0840, which states transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch a circuit malfunction. vehicle sometimes runs at 4-5 rpms at 70 mph. other times you press on the gas and nothing happen. this especially occurs going up hill, when you are stopped at the bottom. if you have a running start, it is not as noticable. unsafe, to be driven in traffic. taken to dealership prior to warranty running. no problem was noted. now that i am 5,000 miles over extended warranty -- extended to 120,000 now i'm told i get the code above....estimate to repair is $3400

Second owner, purchased with 63000 miles. first occurrence was driving on the highway a short distance (45min) started to notice the speed pulsing on flat stretches of road with the cruise control being set at 60 mph. i would manually take over the gas pedal just to have to constantly give it more gas then less gas to maintain 60 on flat ground. to the point of nailing it to maintain 60 then out of no where it would start to go accelerate suddenly up and i would let off the gas to stay @ 60mph and hold the pedal there for about 20 secs just to lose power on flat ground again and would just repeat over and over. when i got off the exit ramp it was sputtering really bad and had a hard time just getting it home w/o hurting myself or others. next day nothing. then over time (1 month) it happened 4 other times but is seeming to get worse. then today i stopped in town at a red light. when it came time to go the care jus sat there and the rpm gauge moved up but the car didn't move forward. i immediately put on hazards, put car in park, shut it off, then restarted it to luckily be able to pull off. went on highway home going 60mph and the surging back and forth with power to weakness to sudden power was the worst its ever been. car isn't under warranty due to being 2nd owner but come on nissan really? i'm a student/new father and the $ is crunched like most families now in this economy. i bought a nissan b/c its reputation of quality and endurance/resillience. i would be sick if this injured my baby b/c this car wasn't in the original recall range. it is very dangerous and could lead to both my tires locking up on the highway going 60 or even faster leaving not only us in jepoardy but everyone around me on the road also.

After driving a while in stop & go traffic the vehicle hesitates and doesn't accelerate when you depress the gas pedal. then after a few seconds the engine revs up and the vehicle lurches forward and sometimes stalls in traffic. once the vehicle stalls, it takes a long time before you can restart the engine. this situation happens almost every time i'm in heavy traffic, which is especially dangerous on the freeways and when making left turns at intersections. i've worked with my local nissan dealership but they haven't come up with a solution, and it's becoming very expensive for me to have them research the problem and not find a fix.

I was driving on the highway at 50mph and all of a sudden murano lost acceleration, gas pedal wasn't working at all. some how i pulled over and turn ignition off and back on and it worked fine. now when is a stop and go situation it does the same thing won't accelerate until like 5 seconds later and in a very dangerous way. i heard lots of people having the same problems and it's life treatning situation.

Vehicle had new brakes - disks and pads added in early may 2011. july 29 2011 driving 20 + mph the vehicle started to sound like it had a flat tire. immediately took vehicle to the shop, glancing at the car, mechanic said may be a tire rod, but wanted to look at it more in depth. he stated that the noise was coming from something loose or cracked in the transfer case. he advised me that at some point transfer case will bust and all 4 wheels will lock up. he quoted me at least $2500 for repair. the location of the transfer case makes it very difficult to repair or service. why will nissan not stand behind this product. there is no rust on the vehicle, but with 150,000 miles on it now, is it worth the money to repair? i have already replace the intake manfold which cracked in november. what will be the next part to break - the engine itself? love my murano, but the company should back their product. my murano has been driven short distances a few times since because i do not want to be on the highway when my 4 tires lock up.

After extended idle, the vehicle becomes unresponsive to fuel feed. when the gas pedal is depressed there is a hesitation (2-5 seconds) and then suddenly the vehicle will lurch forward. the problem temporarily goes away when the car is shut off for a few minutes.

Car made horrible grinding noise; stopped working. towed to pok nissan and under extended warranty they replaced transfer case and rear differential. now here it is barely one year later and just over 12000 miles and the transfer case is leaking again. was told by an independent mechanic what the problem was and that nissan should make good. having reviewed several complaints filed with nhtsa of same problems i found it unbelievable that nissa fails to consider this as a recall or accept responsibility.

When the car first started acting up i was on the interstate on my way to work. it all of a sudded started stalling. i had to press the driving peddal all the way down and then it would take off with a very hard jolt. this would happen off and on especially if i was in stop and go traffic or came to a stop sign or stop light. the car would stall before taking off. i took it to the delearship and they kept it for three days and said they could find nothing. this is when the transmission was under warranty up to 120,000 miles. they said the car would have to do it while in ther shop or they could do nothing. i just found it so hard to believe that the car showed no signes of doing anything that i described while they had it and drove it for three days. well of course i got the car back and it was still doing the same thing. i took it back to them and they told me that it was the transmission and the repair on it alone was going to cost me 3600.00 all by itself. the car was doing the very same thing when i took it in to them the first time but surprisingly after the warranty was off they all of a sudden found the problem. somebody really needs to look into all of these complaints and get these situations under warranty so that these cars can be fixed properly. its not fair to take the car to the dealership about a problem that could have been fixed under warranty to take it back to them for the exact same thing and they tell you that the repair is no longer under warranty and you now have to pay for it.

The transfer case blew up, broken teeth, while traveling on the highway. cost of repair was $3500. not covered under warranty or recall, despite this being a known issue with nissan muranos.

I have a recurring problem that when i am in traffic and i put my foot on the gas pedal, there is no response and then the car surges forward. i was changing lanes and almost caused an accident. the next day i brought to the dealer and they said it was the valve body and gasket. they said the extended 120,000 warranty on the cvt transmisson would not cover the repair. i called nissan customer support, and after investigating they agreed the repair would not be covered under the warranty. i have heard so many complaints that this did not fix the problem that i just had the transmission replaced. i was too worried about the safety hazard. this is a very serious problem , that should not happen at this mileage. i also have had to have the catalytic converter replaced and also the fuel pump, just after it turned 100,000.
07/14/201186500
There are two incidences. the first one was the transfer case which cost $3500 and the shop didn't know what could have caused it he said that they just go which i don't believe there has to be a reason. and now about two months and 2k miles later the rear differential exploded. the car is currently in the shop and at a different shop so hopefully they can find out what went wrong. i did a little research and was told that the rear diff shouldn't have a problem till at least 150,000 miles. also the service manual doesn't say anything about service or maintain of the transfer case or the rear diff. both should be covered up until 100,000 miles. and on god knows how much it will cost to fix this new problem. i will never buy another nissan.

Upon normal acceleration from a stop sign onto a major road with a 35 mph speed limit, there was a loud pop and the car lost power and could only move at a slow crawl to the shoulder of the road. the car could rev, but very little power was getting to the wheels. there was a small oil spill under the rear axle of the car. the car had to be towed to our mechanic (we did not take it to a nissan dealer because we thought the car was out of warranty) and the police demanded speedy dry to be put down to cover the small oil spill, which cost 45 dollars and was not covered by insurance. the mechanic determined that the continuously variable transmission (cvt) and its casing needed to be replaced, at a cost of $4922. after doing some research online, we learned that nissan automatically extended the warranty from 5 years or 60,000 miles to 10 years and 120,000 miles, however, we received no notification from nissan that the warranty was extended, nor did we hear from them that cvt failure was common amongst this model year, as is apparent from the numerous complaints similar to ours. we performed all scheduled maintenance on the car, including replacing the transmission fluid every 30,000 miles. we have reached out to nissan to see if they will reimburse us for the repair costs as part of their extended warranty and we are waiting to hear back from them.

February 2010 i was driving my 2003 murano down the highway and all of a sudden as i was pushing the gas pedal and it wasn't responding properly began to hesitate but i was able to drive it to the nissan dealer for repair and i was told it was a sensor malfunction so it was replaced (at my expense $1100). then in april 2010 driving down the street i heard a thump and as i pushed the gas and then the car began to drag and hesitate. i made it safely to a bank parking lot where i called a tow truck to tow it to the nissan dealer again. this time they say it was some sensor that dealt with the throttle and a case. again at my expense ($3200). so in 2 months i spent $4500 and at that time i was told i should be ok. well it is now april 2011 and i have the same problem again and this time it stopped while i was driving home from work. now i had it towed to my house which iss were it sits because i was told sine i went more than 12k miles it is out of warranty. so i now have a car that is useless unless i spend another $4500 to fix it. unexceptable!!!!!!! i am lucky i was not injured but this needs to be looked at soon or someone can be seriously injured.

A well maintained nissan murano of 7 years started making loud thumping noises after less than 78k miles. our mechanic suspected transmission related issues, which occur frequently on murano and advised to take the vehicle to the nissan dealership. nissan mechanics pinpointed a faulty transfer case to be the cause of the noise. furthermore nissan indicated that it would be too dangerous to drive the vehicle due to the fact that if the transfer case failed completely during driving, it would cause the vehicle to come to an immediate halt, which if driving on the highway could cause a serious hazard. since the transfer case failure was imminent, it had to be replaced at a cost of $2650. further investigation on the internet indicates that transfer case failure in murano is common, however nissan has failed to address the issue and the potential hazards it may cause.

While driving my 2003 nissan murano awd sl i suddenly loose acceleration, the engine will not rev and the rpm indicator is 0, the engine is still running, there are no warning light indicators. after several minutes the accelorator will re-engage and the car will accelorate again. this has happend 5 times in the last 2 weeks, took the car to the dealer and they could not find anything wrong, no codes issued. i have replaced in the past 3 years the transmission in the last 7 months the fuel pump, the catalytic converter, the o2 sensors have all been replaced. the dealer indicated that this not a problem they have been aware of and have no idea what it could be...sound like they are not being exactly forthcoming on this issue.

My 2003 awd nissan murano has a cracked transfer case. the dealer says that it is quite common with all murano's but there has not been a recall. the dealer says that it will cost approximately $4000 to replace the transfer case.

On tuesday may 11th my 2003 nissan murano began to make a loud grinding noise which has been attributed to a crack in the transfer case. the murano has 113000 miles. this was not caused by an accident and happened without any rigorous use of the vehicle. my concern is the commonality of this failure and no action on the part of nissan. this is a major issue and can cause serious harm to the consumer. in doing research cost is expected to be over $3000.

1: after driving the car for along period of time in stop and go traffic or on the thruway. then coming to a complete stop and pressing the gas the car will crawl forward as if you were not pressing down the gas pedal after 1-3 sec of the car crawling into the middle of a intersect and no way to get it out of the intersect when other cars are coming down at 40mph into the intersection; will be disastrous and potentially cause a lost of life. after 1-3 sec the transmission will finally engage. the funny part is when you turn the car off and restart it the problem clears it self until it problem recurs. after reading other stories of there's cvt transmission in the murano doing the same thing to the other murano customer. i decided to take it to the dealer 2: this is a sporadic event and every time i took it to the dealer to get it check they could not duplicate the problem on march 9th and told me the transmission performed normal and it was engine [misfiring and slightly burning oil and compression lost related not transmission [i have enough automotive skill to tell me that this is definitely not a misfire/slightly burning oil/compression lost because once you turn the car off and turn it back on the problem disappears, witha engine misfire it would still persist, the engine is 100% running without any problem until this problem arise: so yesterday, when it started happening to my wife on her drive, i advise her to stop immediately at the dealer to have them take a look at i, to my surprise they refused!!! to take a 2nd look at it as they advise me they already diagnostic it as a engine problem and will not. i called them and demanded that a service tech, test drive it and he said nope this is a engine problem and told my wife to tell me that im making all the service department mad?!. i took it to 2 other transmission place and they verified that this is 100% indeed a transmission problem. *tr

I purchased a nissan murano new in 2003. since new it has had a problem with throttle response lag. i will be in traffic or sitting at a light and when i press the throttle to accelerate the car responds very slowly. i have nearly been hit at intersections where i am turning. the dealer replaced the throttle body at my expense . this was no help. the dealer then wanted to replace a valve in the transmission at my expense( $2600). i asked if other owners had reported similar problems to nissan and the answer from the dealer was that no one had ever reported this problem. this is dangerous and nissan seems to ignore the owner complaints. i guess someone needs to get killed to get their attention. this happens regularly and repeatedly since new in 2003. it's still happening today, in 2010. *tr

I purchased a 2003 nissan murano. since purchasing it, i've had ongoing problems. it has been at multiple shops every two months trying to determine what the problem is. problem - delayed start and hesitation. i took it to a transmission specialist and there were no codes in the system when he ran the diagnostic. he couldn't tell exactly what it was. in the mornings when i drive, it stalls. when i'm in traffic, there's hesitation. it normally takes a few seconds to kick in, and then i take the risk of hitting the person in front of me. in reviewing websites regarding nissan muranos, there have been many complaints regarding the cvt, pressure sensors, etc. nissan doesn't want to own up to the defect. there are thousands of complaints, but still no recalls. the only way i can fix the problem is by restarting my car and then suddenly i'm fine. this needs to be addressed asap. why is it not? the problem doesn't occur on a daily basis so when i get it to the shop they don't recognize it. it won't show them the same symptoms i deal with. my car is at nissan now for the air intake recall. they just called me and told me it is still attached which tells them it's not that that's causing my problems. *tr

In stop and go city traffic, after a while of driving when you idle you step on the gas and nothing then after 5-7 seconds it propels forward without control. late one night is almost cost me my life as i stopped at a stop sign when i depressed the gas it crawled to the middle of the intersection and just stopped for a few seconds a car was coming and almost hit my wife on passenger side. please this issue should be addressed. i've done research and it seems many people are having the same problem with this make. i am the original owner, and i only have 68000 miles on my car.= a car i paid over 36k for. *tr

 1. no real events leading up to it, it just started happening for no apparent reason. 2. the vehicle (2003 nissan murano) will stall after being driven at random times. you push the accelerator and nothing happens for 5-10 seconds and the it revs up almost giving you whiplash. very dangerous when pulling into oncoming traffic. 3. absolutely nothing was done to solve the problem, nissan doesn't even admit to there being a problem. *tr

2003 nissan murano (2 wd) hesitates with no response to the throttle at low speed. for example, when accelerating from a stop sign or in traffic. after about 3 or 4 seconds, the car lurches violently forward. problem has been consistent for the past year. causes difficult and unsafe driving condition in good or bad weather (wheels will spin violently when there is snow on the road as the car finally responds to the throttle input after 3 or 4 seconds). finally had enough after driving in bumper to bumper traffic in nyc yesterday and almost rear-ending the truck in front of me several times! *tr

My 17 year old daughter was driving my 03 nissan murano to school when she stopped to pay a toll. when she tried to take off again the car would not move. once the car got to 4000 rpm's it took off again. the problem stopped occurring for a couple of days and then it happened again. after that it started to happen frequently. after taking the car to the dealer i was told they were not sure what was wrong with it because a lot of different codes were coming up. eventually i was told that i needed to get a whole new cvt transmission. this problem is very unsafe and could have caused my child to have a serious accident on a busy highway. this accident could have caused her , her life. the old transmission is not available because the dealership i brought it to told me that they were going to repair it and re sell it! i think that giving the transmission to anyone is a very dangerous idea. *tr

I have a 2003 nissan murano with 70k miles. during stop and go traffic, i step on the gas pedal and the car does not move for a few seconds then suddenly the car jerks forward. this happens intermittently over the past month. i took it to the dealer and they charged $105 to diagnose it and said i need to replace the valve body for almost $1700. doing a search on internet shows a lot of other 2003 murano owners having the exact same problem. in fact, there are 2 other complaints of the same problem on here, one dated 2005, but currently there is no formal investigation. i would like this issue to be investigated and recalled, as this is a big safety concern for all 2003 nissan murano owners and it's not right for the dealers to make hefty profit on their mistake. *tr

This car has a serious safety flaw in that it hesitates from an idling stop. when you press on the gas while sitting with the engine idling the car will just sit there and then lurch forward suddenly. i first had this problem with the vehicle in 2005 or thereabouts, took it to the dealer (wilde nissan waukesha wi) who contended they could find nothing wrong with the car. this was/is a very intermittent problem which comes and goes without warning, you never know when it will happen. i subsequently took the vehicle back to the dealer several times and got the same story. eventually the dealership changed hands and the new owner (boucher nissan waukesha wi, same address and location as original dealership) was diligent about researching and finding the problem. it was diagnosed as a valve body problem by the boucher folks. nissan refused to honor repair claims and costs which were estimated to be around $1500 because the vehicle was out of warranty at the time boucher identified the defective condition. i firmly believe that nissan should have honored repair costs as this is a serious safety flaw in this vehicle which could result in a crash or serious injury if not death of driver. nissan has taken a very negligent and non caring consumer response position on this matter. the nhtsa should take nissan to task to repair this serious safety defect in this vehicle before someone is seriously injured or killed because of the defective condition. *tr

For the last 10,000 miles, i would step on the gas after being in stop and go traffic and nothing would happen for a few seconds. then, it would suddenly go. i found out that if you restart the car, you have instant power again. this problem would happen infrequently, but always when i had been driving the car for a while or while i was in stopped traffic for 10-15 minutes. apparently the problem is not the cvt. it is a pressure sensor located either on the cvt or inside the cvt. i called nissan consumer affairs to complain, but i got nowhere. my guess is that anyone with a 2003 murano (and possibly later models) could experience this problem. *tr

2003 murano was stopped. driver had foot on brake. vehicle was struck in rear. brake pedal went to floor and vehicle rolled through intersection. had to pump brake pedal twice before brakes would hold again. ever since, vehicle labors as if pulling a heavy load or as if parking brake was partially engaged. nissan dealer states that brakes seem to work, therefore they will not attempt to find cause of pedal-to-the floor incident or cause of vehicle laboring. *jb

I was driving on the nj turnpike then all of the power when i put my foot on the gas disappeared. almost feels like the car is in neutral. was lucky i wasn't hit from behind my other cars since it went from 60 mph to a 5 mph without any warning. was able to get it to side of the road but then it wouldnt start again. had car towed to my mechanic. now i am reading online about others with the exact same problem without any solutions to a problem that nissan was aware of. guess people have to die before any action is taken.

I have a 2003 nissan murano w/ 88k miles. when driving my nissan murano, there seems to be quite an issue with the acceleration and that it hesitates when i i step on the acceleration. the murano does not move forward for a few seconds, after stepping almost fully on the gas pedal. then all of a sudden it feels like the car catches back on and then the car jolts forward, letting the car finally move. this problem occurs sporadicly and actually on a left turn just yesterday, (7-10-11), the car just completely lost it's power. i am glad no accident occured, i was very lucky. i was able to turn to the side of the road and turn the car off and on. after i did that i was able to get the car into a parking lot so i could have my father pick me up. i have dealing with this reoccurring issue for a while. i took it to the dealer and they want to charge me $100 just to diagnose it in order to have nissan be involved. i have to go about this way i was told. after doing some in-depth research on the web for the 2003 nissan muranos, it shows that there are tons of thousands of other 2003 nissan murano owners having the completely same exact problem. it is also baffling to me & not fair that all the nissan dealerships are making so much money from a flaw they caused. i would like to file this issue to be investigated and recalled. this is a huge safety hazard on the road for all 2003 nissan murano owners, and it's not ethically right to leave hundreds of thousands of people in serious life or death situations.

I just purchased a nissan murano yesterday and after just 10 minutes or so of driving i noticed that the acceleration is not exactly in sync with my pressure on the pedal. the previous owner also complained of this to the nissan dealer he bought it from. the dealer said it was the air intake and replaced it at no charge. shortly after my initial drive it did not accelerate even when the gas pedal was to the floor. today i entered a busy intersection to make a left hand turn and after the on coming traffic i pressed on the accelerator but no response rpms were study below 1000 like it was still idling. after several futile attempts pressing on the gas pedal i put the car in park then back to drive hit the gas but again no acceleration. at this time i am in the middle of the intersection under the red light. there is another car behind me that is stuck in the intersection as well which makes a hard left to get around and barely avoids an accident. now with cars all around me i become almost frantic and i am a 52 year old man with plenty of driving experience and rarely panic. i decided to shut off the car and restart it (yes in the middle of a busy intersection under a red light blocking traffic i turn off the car and restart it). it took off immediately. tonight i read a nissan forum with many other nissan murano owners describing similar incidents. this is a very very serious flaw in the engineering under no circumstance should an automobile not accelerate when the pedal is pressed without some precurser event to warn the operator. this is a very serious problem and there should be a recall. i will contact my local nissan dealer to have it looked at and issue a complaint.

I own a 2003 nissan murano. last august it began losing power while driving. it is like the car is being thrown into 1st gear. this has happened 12-18 times over the last 4 months. the crazy thing about these incidents is that no warning lights show up on the dash nor does the car give you any codes indicating that anything went wrong. two months ago i took it to rick hill nissan dealership and told them what was happening. he had the car a week and drove it 66 miles and couldnt get the car to duplicate what was happening to me. unfortunately, they wont work on the car unless is has a code showing up telling them what is wrong. this past week, i almost ran over my family as i was waiting on them to come out of a store. i proceeded to drive up to the store to pick them up when the car surged and the engine started racing. i had to slam on the brakes and throw the car in park to get it to stop. the engine and rpm's were still racing and 4,000 rpms. no codes were thrown and no lights on the dash again. 20 minutes later as we were coming home, the car lost power as if the transmission slipped into first gear and we creeped all the home at 5 mph, with me having the pedal to the floor. this time there were codes, but when the car was turned off it would not restart. i had it towed to the dealership and they told me it was the ipdm. 825 dollars for the fix. 51 miles later the car slips again and acts like it is thrown into first gear. no lights, no codes. after reading many complaints on the cvt transmission in the 2003 murano i have no doubt this is the problem. this defect has put my family in many dangerous situations in the past year. nissan increased the warranty for this transmission to 120,000 miles. this is not good enough. i took mine in with 118,500 but they said nothing was wrong, because they had no codes showing a problem. now with 128,000 i am screwed. this needs to be a class action law suit or a recall on the cvt transmission.

When you come to a complete stop and then press the accelerator down the car does not move initially. if you hold the accelerator down after a few seconds the car will start to move. this has happened 3 times in the last 6 months after driving the car for about 20-30 mins. in stop and go traffic. the next day everything works like it should. i have taken it to a nissan dealer and at first they could not even find a problem since they could not duplicate what i described. the second time i took it back they managed to get a service code related to the valve body on the transmission. nissan has a service bulletin issued related to this situation, which instructs the valve body to be replaced at a cost of $1700. since you never know when this delayed acceleration will occur it is very dangerous to enter or cross traffic when it occurs.

I have a 2003 nissan murano. i have 115k miles and for the 5 months, i've had the same problem all others have reported, press the gas and the car doesn't move for a few seconds then jerks forward. could be very dangerous when in traffic and trying to change lanes. in fact, i only discovered this problem when i was in stop and go traffic lately. i took it to goodyear company, they charged me $69 to diagnose the problem and told me it's the transmission. something needs to be done since i am 100% sure nissan knows about this problem but is ignoring it. thank you.

Nissan muarano 2003. when hot and stop and go, acceleration can lag by 10 to 30 secons after stepping on accelerator pedal. very dangerous. seems to be a pressure sensor in the transmission and they want $3000. to $5000. to fix

I have a 2003 nissan murano. at approximately 81000 miles i noticed a burning oil smell after driving. i had the car checked and the transfer case was out of oil. the service dept. resealed the transfer case under extended warranty. at about 96000 miles i had the vehicle checked out before end of warranty and again the transfer case leaked out the oil and i had service on transfer case. the seals had to be redone, also under extended warranty. i have the car in now for routine service with transmission fluid flush and fill and because i am getting a strange ticking noise when accelerating. notified that cvt fluid leaking onto outside of transfer case. needs transmission seal redone. over $2000. i am getting the seal redone under transmission 120000 warranty from nissan. dealership says i should get the transfe rcase seals redone but they are not covered under the transmission warranty and i cannot afford the close to $2000 extra this would cost. seems that the seals should last more than 8000 miles as they seemed too after buying the vehicle new and not replacing them until after 50000 miles. after reading many complaints about a pressure valve and other transmission issues i believe the transmission sould be replaced as i am very concerned that just replacing the tranmission forward seal(?) will not correct the leaking problems with the transmissionand transfer case and that the transmission will go out after the factory warranty. i believe that there is a problem with the transfer case/transmission in this year/model of vehicle and that nissan knowns this. there sould be a recall.

2003 murano - when in stop and go traffic car will not accelerate for 5-10 seconds when pressing the gas pedal. dealership had my car for 2 days and first said it was the transmission but then nissan would not approve it to be replaced even under warranty. then told me it was the tcm that needed to be replaced for $1000.00. this is a very dangerous situation and nissan needs to step up to the plate and replace these faulty dangerous parts free of charge to the customer! instead of diagnosing improper things and charging the customer thousands of dollars for non-fixes.

2003 nissan murano - since the first day it has hesitated and jerked when accelerating from a full stop. this is likely related to the known transmission problem.

2003 nissan murano sl: the car would not respond to the accelerator. the engine would rev up, but the car would not move. then without warning, the car will go into gear and move. car would lose drive train power, but all other functions, radio, ac, steering would still work. the car simply would not go when the accelerator was pressed. then the transmission would work all of a sudden and then quit all of a sudden.

After stopping at intersection i pressed the gas and car rolled into intersection. within a few seconds car took off like a bat out of ???. this was quite scary as a truck was approaching. this car has done this several times and lateley this has become an everyday occurrence. this is quite dangerous because you are clueless to when it will happen. i thought the previous recall concerning the air intake was a solution. it is more than obvious that it is not. this is too dangerous to be ignored. i invite you to drive my car for a day and then maybe you will have something done about this. i noticed there are several more complaints filed but i do not see any resolution. nissan needs to recall these cars and fix this problem. extending the warranty is not a solution if the dealer is not willing to fix the car. please get this fixed before there is loss of life.

Bought a 2003 nissan murano new and have had a recurring problem with the transmission that the dealer refuses to repair under warranty. basically the car will not accelerate from a stop and then suddenly surges forward. the problem is intermittent and seems to mostly occur when the transmission is hot. sometimes it surges while driving at a steady speed. i have taken the vehicle to the dealer 4 times over a period of several years to have the problem repaired, but they have either said there is nothing wrong or that it needed a new air filter, but the problem has never been fixed and it continues to get worse. nissan sent an extended warranty to owners of these vehicles that states it covers transmission problems up to 120,000 miles, however the dealer won't honor it and wants a $2,000 deposit to order the parts before it will schedule the repair.i contacted nissan consumer affairs and they said the repair is covered, and i told the dealer this, but the dealer said nissan won't reimburse him so he won't make the repairs unless i pay, and pay up front, no less. i can't afford this and my vehicle is rapidly approaching the 120,000 warranty cut off and i have the feeling they are just stalling until the warranty runs out. the vehicle is dangerous to drive but i have no choice and i don't know whom to turn to.

Driving my 2003 murano two days ago at around 25mph up a small hill. the vehicle begins to jerk and lose power. i briefly let go of the gas and problem stops. i hit the accelerator pedal again, and again begins to jerk. check engine light comes on. i pull over, turn off the vehicle for about 30 seconds. turn it back on, take off again and jerks again. i back off on the pedal and had to climb the hill at 15mph. once at the top, the vehicle drove fine. i got to my desitnation and stayed there for about 1.5 hours. took off and got home with no obvious problems. weird! next day, at a stop sign a block away from home. car coming from left, i accelerate and the car bogs on me. would not accelerate just coasted. no power! called the dealer and dropped it off. they call me later that afternoon and they admiit there were high gear issues that were resolved with resetting the transmission computer but they can't find the source of the low gear problems ( these gears are usually the ones in use at higher speeds..... ). very dangerous when driving. i felt very unsafe and affraid that it would happen again which is why i dropped it off at the dealer write away.

Stop and go traffic, same loss of power and other various symptoms others describe, had the original trans.replaced 20,000mi. ago, same thing happening again, when is enough ,enough what will it take for nissan to accept full responsibility for this very dangerous problem i guess someone will have to be seriously injured or worse for something to be done how come toyota is being torn-apart for somewhat similar issues and nissan is allowed to skate by. a higher authority needs to come to the rescue of us consumers especially in these hard economic times people will continue to drive these death-traps because they cant afford to fix them, someone will be injured because of this, its not a matter of if, it's just a matter of when?

I was trying to merge into traffic after stopping at a stop sign and the car rolled forward a bit but would not accelerate. it finally lurched forward after a few seconds. the problem continued at every stop after that until i shut it off. i took my murano to a nissan dealership in east providence, ri and was told the vehicle needed a new transmission. the dealership acted like they had never heard of this before, but searching the internet reveals this is s common problem with muranos. this is a potentially dangerous problem escpecially in heavy highway traffic.

I own an '03 nissan murano. since 114k miles, i have experienced stalling following idle. the problem usually occurs when the vehicle is very warm (not overheating). after sitting idle for a few minutes (i.e. at a redlight or stop and go traffic) when i press the accelerator, nothing happens for a few seconds. the rpm's do not indicate any change. and then all of a sudden, the vehicle realizes i am pressing the accelerator and takes off at excessive speed/rpms. the problem has put me in very dangerous situations such as when i am trying to make a left hand turn across traffic and suddenly stalls. or like the first time i experienced the failure, i was trying to pull onto a major highway. by the time my vehicle decided to go, another vehicle was approaching in the lane i was trying to turn onto and i had to slam on my brakes to avoid pulling out in front of the oncoming vehicle and causing a wreck. several vehicles were behind me waiting to get onto the same highway and were very aggrivated i was holding up traffic since my vehicle was stalling. the problems occurs as regularly as i sit idle in traffic or get into a congested traffic area. every single time. after reading hundreds of early year murano owners are having the same problem, i feel nissan should recognize this as a defect and take responsibility for this costly danger. i have read that many have had to replace the entire cvt transmission and that nissan is often misdiagnosing the problem. a code reader indicated my tps sensor was bad. i changed it with barely any noticeable changes. later a dealer's code reader said i should replace the cadallidic converter. after that pricey repair, i still have the same problem. extremely dangerous.

*tr

My 2003 nissan murano has transmission problems. after driving a couple of hours on highway, it will not pull up a hill, pass a vehicle, especially if i press on the accelerator hard, it jerks, slows down and almost stops. it only does this when warm/hot. it won't do it when cold, so the nissan dealer can not see the problem. it seems to be getting worse with age. it is a very dangerous condition. i dare not let anyone drive it in the family except me. nissan should replace the transmission. it is obviously a common defect from what i read on the internet. *tr

I am one of probably thousands of nissan murano owners with the cvt transmission with the same problem. i drive a congested freeway and at least twice, sometimes three times a week, in stop and go traffic the car starts to hesitate when i step on the accelerator. i actually have found that feathering it helps from having it jerk forward as i step on the accelerator, but it is still extremely dangerous. this is continuous when i come to a stop or almost to a stop until, as others have mentioned, i have an opportunity to turn the ignition off. difficult to turn the ignition off while driving in stop and go traffic on the freeway. it goes away for a while after i turn it off, but if the driving conditions are the same, it happens again. i took it to a mechanic who stated that the problem is a sensor inside the transmission, but there is no way to fix it. the transmission would require replacement, as there are no re-builds available and nissan does not have parts for this transmission available for re-builds. the quote for replacement is over $8,000. i believe this is approximately what the car is worth. this is an extremely dangerous situation, and i am concerned that someone will be injured or worse as a result of it, if it has not already happened. *tr

Previously in love with my 2003 nissan murano, within the last 4 months (100,000 miles) i have had so many problems. throttle body, cv boots, axle seals, front and back motor mounts, radiator, and most recently needs a 4,000 transmission repair. just as others have reported, my car gets to the point where it will not accelerate, even if i push the accelerator to the floor, then it suddenly lunges forward. i am so disappointed and refuse to spend another dollar on this car, which is falling apart at an exponential speed. this is only a 6year old car! *tr

I won a 2003 nissan murano. for the past few years, i have noticed a severe problem with my vehicle. after i am in stop and go traffic for about 5-10 minutes, the accelerator no longer responds properly. when i press down on the peddle, nothing happens for a few seconds. or, i need to press down very hard on the peddle to get any acceleration. unfortunately, this cause the vehicle to 'surge' forward. the only way to (temporarily) fix this is to shut off power to the car and restart the engine. however, the problem returns after a few minutes as long as i am in stop and go traffic. *tr

During the past 12 months, 2003 murano was taken to several nissan dealers for noise emitting from wheel or transmission's was told that this was a tire rod problem, which was replaced. the problem continued and was told that it was a strut problem. next, it was in need of tires. finally, after the warranty has expired, it's the transmission. this problem will now cost over $5000 to fix. *tr

2003 nissan murano. this is a recurring problem. i've had my murano for about 2.5 years, and for the past 1.5 years have had acceleration problems. after pushing on the gas for a couple of seconds, the engine doesn't respond, but then it surges forward at a high rate. there have been multiple times where i've been sitting in the middle of the intersection and the engine will stall, causing me to be stuck with the engine not responding - even though i'm pushing on the gas. i've taken the vehicle to 4 different mechanics, including 2 nissan dealerships, and none have been able to diagnose the problem. there seem to be certain things that fix it for a short period of time, and then it returns just a couple of months later. i've read online and this problem is not an anomaly. many others are having the same issue. fortunately, i am selling my car, but lost thousands of dollars in repair and diagnostic time because no one could understand what is wrong with this lemon. less than 5000 miles ago, the dealership told me that i needed a new transmission, and i took it to a private body shop, they flushed the tranny fluid, and it seemed to drive fine for the next 5000 miles. now, i am having similar problems. since it is a special tranny (cvt), it would cost anywhere between $5000-6500 to replace it, which is more than half of what the car is worth. besides that, i've read on blogs that some people get the transmission fixed, and then they continue to have the problem! fortunately, i am selling my murano due to a big move, but i had to take a loss on it because of this problem. nissan needs to own this issue. *tr

The solenoid pressure valve in my 2003 nissan murano failed at 81,100 miles. it runs fine on the highway but when you transition to city driving at each stop it will loose power and the car will barely coast through the intersection, then it will catch and accelerate very quickly. the check engine light was not on when this occurred. i contacted the dealer who said they could do nothing since the service engine light was not on. i took it to 2 other auto repair places who were able to retrieve information stored on the computer, which stated it was the solenoid pressure valve (the light was still not on at this point). i learned from several mechanic shops that this is a common problem with this vehicle but they do not make the part that needs to be fixed, they only sell a valve body kit and quoted me $2000 for this repair. however, they also stated that there is a 25-50% chance that this repair will not be effective and i would then have to fully replace the transmission for an additional $5000+. luckily there were no injuries because of this problem but i find it unacceptable that nissan knows about this problem but only requires an absurd amount of money to fix it. i made a large investment in nissan based on their reputation for reliability and have been greatly let down. *tr

My 2003 nissan murano began driving funny. it seemed like something was wrong with the car when i accelerated. the day before we were scheduled to bring it in for repair, my wife was driving on the highway and the car would no longer accelerate. we first towed the car to firestone, not knowing it was the transmission. firestone was unable to repair the car, and the car was sent to nissan, where we were told the car needs a new transmission. the car had only 70,000 miles on it, and there is no reason why the transmission should have failed. upon further research i found plenty of complaints about the 2003-2004 transmissions failing in the murano. we are now stuck with a $5500 bill we can not afford to pay. *tr updated 08/20/09.*jb

Cvt transmission problem in 2003 nissan murano. car will not move when step on accelerator, then suddenly lurches forward at much higher than anticipated speed, especially in stop and go traffic. this is dangerous, as i have nearly run into several cars because of this problem. nissan requires replacement transmission for $5,000 at car owner's expense - this is an unaffordable requirement for safety. nissan knew about this problem, and refuses to do anything about it. they should be required to recall the cars and fix this safety hazard!!! *tr

My problem started when i was towing a trailer.after about a half hour of traveling on an expressway at high speed 50 to 55 mph, i would notice a drastic loss of power. i would be in the passing lane attempting to pass a slow moving vehicle and i would lose power to the point i would have to decelerate and back off and get back in behind the slow moving vehicle. this would create a very dangerous situation on the fast moving highway. i would have to then pull over and stop to allow the vehicle to cool and i could then continue for another half hour or so. i brought my vehicle into the nissan dealerships in fort myers florida and clearwater florida but they were never able to diagnose my problem. i sold my trailer to avoid the danger of towing. ...then more recently i started experiencing a similar problem without towing a trailer...when encountering stop and go traffic on an expressway my murano will not respond to the gas pedal for about an inch or two then suddenly the car will lurch forward all at once. this is very dangerous as if i am not careful i could rearend the car in front of me. as the previous problem it doesn't do it all the time and the dealer tells me they cant fix it unless it is doing it. i am perplexed by this when i went on line and found all the people with 03 muranos that are having the same problems as i am. there is no single date of incident this is an ongoing thing. *tr

I have a nissan murano 2003. on july 3,2009 after i stopped on a red light the car stopped without warning, it wouldn't go into gear i tried to accelerate and it would not respond. after couple tries the car when back into gear and i was able to drive back home at about 5 miles per hour. before this incident the car did no show any sign of defect, there were no light or warning on the dash board and even as it stopped the engine was still running and everything in the car was working (air conditioner, lights, radio, etc) i took the car to the mechanic and they said is something wrong with the transmission. i was fortunate to be in a residential area, at a time were traffic was no so busy. at the time off this incident my entire family was in the car with me. if would been in a highway a sudden stop could have cause tragic consequences for my family and i. at this time i am looking at a 6,000 repair bill, and no answer from nissan to take responsibility of this problem. *tr

My 2003 nissan murano has failed to maintain speed or accelerate past anywhere from 5 to 40 mph even when flooring pedal. almost caused an accident on interstate with children in car! took to nissan replaced throttle control module computer over $700. 1 week later it is doing the same thing again. problem started at about 67k miles on car. took to dealer a week or two after it originally happened. *tr

2003 nissan murano has a loud wreeee sound upon cranking it up; however within about 10 min. of driving it quiets down. when the car is stopped and you begin to accelerate the car has a 3-5 sec stall and then leaps forward. when i was at an intersection my car did this and threw me into oncoming traffic. i was fortunate that the driver of the other car swerved in time to miss me, but it was a very close call. *tr

 1. there were no clear indications of the event or no warnings or indicator lights. 2. the 2003 nissan murano with 84k miles loses all power and acceleration when the accelerator is depressed. i found this out the hard way in making a left turn after coming to a stop and then turned in front of traffic that was far enough away to make the turn. however since the car would only move at no recordable velocity i was a sitting duck for oncoming traffic. 3. the car was taken to an independent mechanic who had it for 2 weeks and couldn't fix it. they then took it to a nissan dealer who said the transmission valve body would need to be replaced at 1800$ plus labor. then the next day they changed their minds and they came back the next day and said they would not replace this part without me signing a waiver washing there hands if this were to occur again. basically not warranting their work or the part. they also could not guarantee the new transmission would happen to go out again after a certain amount of miles. so at the dealer the car sits. 4. i will not drive this car and put myself, my family or other motorists at risk. this is a serious problem and needs to be addressed. there are alot of these cars on the road. it is just a matter of time before something serious happens. *tr

The power on my 2003 nissan murano periodically cuts out during stop and start traffic, or hot conditions. nothing happens for a few seconds and then the vehicle lurches forwards suddenly. this happened twice last year (around 100k miles), and has happened 4 times in the last month (116k miles). this lack of power has led to numerous dangerous situations where i have been stranded in front of oncoming traffic, or slipping down a hill, and the unpredictable surge of acceleration is also a major problem. *tr

When car is driven in stop&go traffic on a 70f warm day the acceleration stops working. the acceleration becomes delayed and then the car surges forward after a 3 second delay. very dangerous. very common problem with this car & year. nissan recommends an expensive transmission repair - $5k. *tr

Nissan murano 2003 stalls periodically during stop and go in traffic. stopped accelerating while driving on the highway. dealership insisted there was nothing wrong for several months and kept making repairs to other components of the car. happened again yesterday and now they say the transmission needs to be replaced at a cost of almost $6,000.00. vehicle has cvt transmission and has 94,000 miles on it.

My 2003 nissan murano awd had 88,300 miles on it, and began vibrating while i was on a 4-lane road. as i tried to pull it off into a parking lot on the left, it came out of gear, and stopped in the center of a busy intersection. it would not go back into gear, and would not rev, but it was idling. the check engine light never came on. it was a dangerous situation, and i called 911, because i was afraid that my stalled car would cause an accident. then 2 men offered to help push the car into the parking lot. they did, but they put themselves in harm's way in the still busy intersection. two nissan dealerships diagnosed the car as needing a new transmission, and i have had to replace it at a cost of $6000. *tr

Driving on the freeway and began to take the exit . stopped at the light to turn left and the car had no power. the gas pedal was to the floor and nothing happened. i turned the car off , sat a few minutes, started the car up and crept into the intersection, trying to cross the highway, made it to the side of the road, turned the car off again, sat about 5 minutes and then again started it up. it traveled maybe a half a block, stopped, turned the key off, sat in the highway (very dangerous) and preceded to travel another block to my destination. parked the car and called a tow truck to get it back home and to the nissan dealer. he has just called and said it is the transmission at a cost of 4500.00 dollars. i can't believe it, the car has only 87000 miles one it. after reading many discussion groups on the internet i find that alot of owners of the 2003 murano have had the same problem. we called nissan and they will not do anything for us. we need to ban together and get some action. i don't know how a company can get away with this. too many incidents to ignore. *tr

I own a 2003 nissan murano. i currently has 67,000 miles. over the last month i have had major issues with acceleration, the vehicle loses power or doesn't respond at all when pressing the gas pedal. after a 1-3 second pause the transmission finally engages sporadically and clunks very hard. i have been told by the dealer that the transmission needs to be replaced. the nissan dealer has informed me that there is no repair of this cvt transmission. this problem is occurring every time that i drive the vehicle and is very dangerous. this issue has happened several times in busy traffic and has caused several near collisions. i am very disappointed. i have never had to replace a transmission under 100,000 miles. *tr

In stop-n-go traffic, no initial acceleration when pedal pressed to floor. then car would suddenly jump forward. caused multiple instances of nearly crashing into cars in front of me or not making it through intersections. brought to dealer multiple times and nothing was done. finally, no acceleration at all and car now won't move forward. was told entire transmission needs replacing for $6500...... at only 100,000 miles! a transmission should last longer than that and it should have been fixed when i first started complaining and seeing symptoms. *tr

After being in stop and go traffic, my 2003 nissan murano se 2wd does not accelerate properly. once the gas pedal is pressed, the car barely starts to move, but the tachometer continues to increase. at about 3000 rpm, or roughly 1-2 seconds under normal acceleration from a complete stop, the murano then lurches forward. this is very dangerous and happens when the car has experienced long periods of stop and go traffic or being idle. i took it to nissan and they claimed to have fixed the problem by changing the throttle body chamber. the murano did not have any more problems until about 4 months after the repair. since then, it has been acting up as traffic conditions warrant. i can reset or stop the lurching from occurring by turning off the ignition and then turning it back on. the problem is, i'm usually in traffic when i do this, and the problem resumes about 5-10 minutes later. if i get away from the traffic, stop and let the car sit for a bit, then turn the engine back on and drive in normal traffic, then the problem does not occur. *tr

We drive a 2003 nissan murano awd. after stop and go traffic, the vehicle will stall in traffic (rpms drop to idle, and the car stops moving) when the accelerator pedal is pressed. within 2-5 seconds the engine will rev up (presumable as far as it goes, but we take our foot off the pedal by then), and the vehicle will lurch forward and drive normally until we stop again. by the nature of city driving this often happens in intersections and other like dangerous places. i've asked my wife not to drive it in traffic anymore as i think this is dangerous. this happens repeatedly now at 66k miles. we've taken this to two dealers who have recommended everything from replacing the valve body to replacing the entire transmission. *tr

I purchased a 2003 nissan murano with 23,000 miles on it in march of 2004. after the purchased i took it to a dealer for the 100 point inspection and was told everything was fine. by the end of that year for the first time my car failed to accelerate. i thought nothing of it since it only happened once and went and got the spark plugs changed. next by the summer of 2005 it happened again. i explained to the dealer and they said you need your fuel injectors cleaned. i got them cleaned and it went away again but every once and a while it would slow down during acceleration. i made it to 2006 and all of a sudden the check engine light came on. the dealer said i need to change my catalytic converter bank 1. he showed me which one and replace it. a week later the same thing happened again(check engine light). i was told the wrong converter was replaced. i purchased the other one and everything is good for a while. then the slow acceleration got even worse. the dealer couldn't find anything wrong. needless to say i'm now out of warranty. i then took it to another mechanic that wasn't a dealer and he showed me a technical bulletin about slow acceleration. i brought it to nissan's attention and they said it could be a possibility. the told me i need to replaced the valve body. i bought it and they put it on with even worse results. now they said i need a transmission. i asked how come they didn't check this out if it was a known problems. they said we need the look for the problem. they know about the bulletin but since its not a recall they don't have to check for it. why isn't this problems a recall if its known. are they waiting for your car to come off warranty to check. now i have to look for a transmission but i'll probably have the same problem eventually. please stop this corruption. *tr

Was driving on the highway at 75mph (normal speed for interstate travel in montana) when our murano started run at 4000 rpm abnormally. it ran at this rate for awhile then it felt like the transmission was loosing power and i had to take it off cruise control because it couldn't keep up and maintain constant speed. vehicle start to jump in speed and then loose power and continued to do this until i pulled the vehicle off the highway. when i had stopped i tried accelerating to get back onto the highway with no success. i had the accelerator pedal to the floor and had no power. i turned the vehicle off/on and had slight acceleration enough to pull back onto the highway but almost got hit because transmission wouldn't accelerate properly and fast enough. took murano back to dealer to check out engine/transmission and they said after conducting diagnostic it needed a new transmission. i said the vehicle only has around 65,000 miles i've never heard of a 5 year old car needing a new transmission. what's worse they said is the transmission has to be ordered directly from nissan and cost $4200! total cost for the repair would be $5600!!! this is no small repair problem! a 2003 vehicle with only 65k miles on it should not need a new transmission!!! nissan should be held accountable for such a manufacturers defect that had the potential to kill my family on that highway if all power had been lost suddenly cruising at 75mph in traffic!!!!! *tr

There are two problems with the car that seem to keep happening over and over again, broken boot struts, but the major is with the acceleration/cvt system. it all of a sudden gives no gas when you push and then surges forward at a high speed which is very very dangerous- after reading many others posts it seems that this is a very common problem for the 03' murano, for a vehicle that has a little over 65,000 miles just had the major 60k service done and has had all regular service visits by dealer and i am very concerned for my safety and this definitely seems like a recall problem- replaced crankshaft position sensors, sensor asm, camshaft, gasket sill ring rubb, o rings, etc. *tr

After driving the car for about 30 min or so every time i step on the accelerator pedal the car is delayed in moving. in addition every time i drive the car i lose power. the check engine light comes on and the car slows to a crawl and stops. i will then have to coast the car off to the side of the road. wait a few min and then restart. this is very scary every time i try to make left hand turns. other times i am driving it just will not move for a long 5 to 8 sec delay. cars coming at me in at any speed have almost hit me. there were no warnings prior the stalling. this happens every single time i drive the car. i read there was a nhtsa recall# 03v455000. the throttle body 3 times, transmission 2 times. motor mounts and a host of other parts. let's see oh yeah the tcm twice. valve body replaced. miles at 105,000. i have spent over $900.00 plus. the dealership i bought it from won't take it back. at this point i just want out of this car. could anyone help me? *tr

I own a 2003 murano and have had problems with transmission that the dealer lied to me about. as i was pulling into traffic the car jerked after pressing the accelerator and jumped in the road which proved to be very dangerous. this is a common problem with this vehicle and nissan should recall it. i spent over $4500.00 to repair this. it is a factory defect that never was addressed. the poor consumer thinking they are buying a decent car at over 36k dollars is buying a piece of crap. this is a safety issue that should be addressed by the company or the federal agency that governs the quality of a product being sold in this country. *tr

When in traffic under appx 10 mph, you accelerate and it does nothing, then suddenly takes off. you don't know when it is going to happen. it is very random and once it starts doing it, it keeps doing it until you stop the engine and restart the car. i have to pull out on a busy street in the afternoon, and have almost been hit. i have taken it to two nissan dealerships and all they do is say it is a vacuum line. they said i needed new motor mounts to keep the engine stable so that they won't get loose. i had them replaced and it did not fix the problem. the problem does not throw an error code, so no one, including a very reputable auto repair garage, can fix it. we have even started guessing what the problem might be, ie, fuel injectors - had them cleaned - no change. i have now spent almost $3k and i still have the same problem. nissan tells me that there is a recall, but not for my serial number. i have been dealing with this since about may. *tr

Purchased this vehicle with 20,000 miles on it, kept well maintained, drove 90% highway miles mostly commuting to care for elderly person. front struts leaked and failed without warning at approx 60,000 miles, then had loss of power, transmission/driveshaft began howling noise and we could smell faint oil smell, took to dealer were told it was the transmission valve body which they fixed under warranty, that they could detect no oil smell or source for same, and that cvt howl was just the normal sounds of that type of transmission. we specifically asked whether there are any known problems or failures with drivetrain assemble components, because we heard of many other strut failures by murano owners after our struts failed prematurely. we were told there were no reports of any trouble, not to worry about it. the howl never went away, and the oil smell came and went. sept. 4, we pulled out of our driveway drove about 50 yards down the street and hear a horrible thumping noise, like a flat drive, we stopped immediately and checked, no flat tire. we started the car again and drove a few feet, same noise. we parked the car and had it towed to dealer. we are told the transfer case grenaded that we must have been driving it hard (we were going about 10 mph), that it would be $4000 to repair! the tech asked if we had been hearing any unusual noises before the failure, we told him we had, and we had reported it to the dealer when it was under warranty, but they refused to help with the repair costs. i checked on the internet and spent 6 hours reading thousands of similar transfer case failure stories on muranos with all levels of mileage on them, many had been told, like we were, that warning signs were nothing when their vehicles were still under warranty. the dealer also tried to charge us $2800.00 for the part, which we found for $1518.00 from another nissan dealer. this is a known problem, has caused vehicles to stop in traffic and should be a recall defect. thank you *tr

My murano has a loss of power after sitting in traffic. after stopped in traffic, i press the gas pedal and the car doesn't move for about 6 or 7 seconds. then it takes off quickly. this dangerous because someone may hit me from behind when the light turns green and the murano doesn't go. nissan dealer says the car doesn't show any failure codes, but thinks the transmission needs replacing. 84,000 miles. *tr

Failure involves loss of power when the gas pedal is depressed. this problem occurs after car is warmed up and then put in a stop and go driving environment (heavy city traffic). car will lurch forward, but only after pedal is depressed close to the half way point. this obviously is a dangerous situation and i have so far avoided accident by allowing distance between myself and the car in front. problem occurs 70-80% of time aforementioned circumstances are present. nissan dealer says problem would be very difficult to diagnose because no warning light appears on dashboard. *tr

When driving home from work one day in stop and go traffic, car will hesitate a few seconds before accelerate slowly forward. this increase the risk of getting hit from the vehicle behind because the murano simply would stand still for a few seconds when traffic light turns green and driver behind me expect the car to be moving. car has only 95k miles, this is similar to the transmission issues other drivers have that nissan wouldn't address or recall. i hope nissan would stand behind their products and address this. *tr

I was driving on rt 80 and my 2003 nissan murano, the check engine light went on, and shortly thereafter my car started losing power. as i accelerated, the car would not regain speed and started bucking. i had to slow down, pull over and turn off the engine. i restarted it a few mins later and the power returned. i took the car to nissan to investigate and ended up needing a new transmission. the car is less than 4 years old (i purchased it new in august 2004) and has 68,000 miles on it. i filed a claim with nissan and they informed me there was nothing they could do. i had to replace it at my cost. in searching the internet, i have discovered hundreds of similar cases to mine as well as other complaints to the nhtsa. this seems to be a chronic issue with the make and model car i own and i think nissan needs to be investigated as im guessing there needs to be some sort of recall for this. if it was worse, i could have caused a very serious accident on a major highway. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 nissan murano. the contact stated that while driving at different speeds he experienced hesitation which as a consequence hinders acceleration. he took the vehicle to the dealer on numerous occasions in which technicians repeatedly advised him that because they could not duplicate the problem they could not provide a remedy. eventually, a dealership stated that he needed to replace the valve body in the transmission at an expense of $1800.00 because his vehicle exceeded its warranty. he has not had the vehicle repaired. he contacted the manufacturer and was not provided with any assistance. the failure mileage was 53,000 and the current mileage was 73,000.

I brought my nissan into the dealer the beginning of april 2008 because the service engine soon light was on...and i was told my car's computer needed to re-learn something. that cost me $100. then, about two weeks later, i was on the interstate, my engine started making a straining noise, and i began to lose power. of course, my service engine soon light popped on. no matter how hard i pressed the gas pedal, my car would not speed up... and the rpm seemed to be stuck on 4,000. my speed steadily decreased, and i had to finally stop my car in the breakdown lane. i left it sit for about 15 minutes, restarted it, and it miraculously fixed itself. i made it off the interstate, but it eventually started acting up again. i pulled into a parking lot and let it sit for about 2 hours. that was long enough for it to fix itself again and make it to the nissan dealer. it didn't give me any trouble on the way to the dealer, so i was completely shocked when they told me that i needed a new transmission!!! that absolutely never even occurred to me that something that major could be wrong! my murano has just over 70,000 miles on it.... unbelievable! it ended up sitting at the dealer for more than a week because they had to order the transmission. the total cost would've been $5,700, but my extended warranty covered it. that's a big relief, but now i've lost faith in my murano. i've had minor problems before, and it even completely died on me and had to be towed (i guess i need to lookup that problem and report it too)... but i just thought these things happen no matter how new a car is. it is comforting to know that so many other people have had the same problem... thanks to this website. nissan really needs to do something. this is a huge mistake on their part, and to keep bragging about how awesome their nissan transmissions are... is very wrong. nissan needs to stand behind their product. *tr

I owned a 2003 nissan murano for less than 11 months before i was forced to trade it in. during the first 7 months of ownership i had nothing but a great experience with this vehicle. within the 8th - 11th months however i began experiencing problems with my vehicle. i took it to the dealer and was informed that my vehicle's transmission was burning up and slipping. i took it to another nissan dealer and allowed them to do a diagnosis. i was told that the transmission only had a short amount of life left and that it would cost $5,000+ to have it shipped to japan and replaced. they told me that the fluid installed in the transmission was atf and not the $25/quart cvt fluid. i believed this and have been telling this story for years. i learned today that this was nonsense. i bought the car from a reputable dealer and only had the car serviced by nissan. where would the fluid get into my ride in that case? i bought a warranty on the recommendation of the dealers representative who informed me that i would want coverage for the transmission in hopes of avoiding the $5,000.00 tag for replacement. he was a prophet because i ended up needing a new transmission less than 11 months later, but my warranty refused to cover the cost citing the failure to service the transmission at 60k though it was serviced at 61k. i traded this vehicle in with less than 70k on the odometer. in a year when i should have no car payment, i must accept another 4 years of car payments. what a shame, what a waste. how much i miss my ride, but what would it have been worth to me to keep it without knowing the same thing wouldn't continue?!?!!?!? please help me and those others out there who need relief from this nightmare. i want to recoup my money that was stolen from me by nissan and for the upsidedown deficit i was thrust into by having to prematurely trade in my vehicle. *tr

I have a 2003 nissan murano. it's been a great car since i purchased it new. i have recently heard a whining noise. the dealership and another source tell me i need a new transmission for about $5000. the car has 68k miles. the dealership told me it will just die one of these days. my fear is where will i be or what will i be doing when that happens. nissan just says, too bad its out of warranty. *tr

I have a 2003 nissan murano with 76k miles. during stop and go traffic anywhere between 0 and 30 mph, i step on the gas pedal and the car does not move for a few seconds then suddenly it lurches forward. this is happening intermittently over the past three month. i am very scared to push the throttle because in a few secs, it just suddenly lurches forward and could cause a accident in front of me. i am not the only one, as there seems to be many people with this problem. i think this should be a recall from nissan. please don't let this become an accident with injuries before action is taken. thank you. *tr

I recently submitted a complaint. i read over the other complaints after submission and realized that 90% of the complaints submitted are same or similar to my problem. i was in fact told two different reasons for my car issues from two dealers in two different states. i am afraid that nissan does not know what the problem is or is not relaying it to their tech's. my car is loosing power during take off and thrusting forward. this mostly occurs in stop and go traffic. to remedy, i have to pull over and turn off the car. are we not addressing this issue because it costs nissan to much to fix all the vehicles in need or is your agency turning a blind eye until an actual accident or death occurs. this problem will occur on the hwy, local street, anywhere. it does not discriminate and costs much to fix. the biggest problem is that i am under the assumption that if they fix it may still be broken due them not knowing the problem. i have been told it was the following: throttle body, valve body, and transmission. *tr

While sitting at stop lights or in traffic, the vehicle fails to move for 20-30 seconds, then lurches forward at a high rate of speed. this has been occurring since i reached 70k miles and according to all other 2003 nissan owners on numerous websites, they are experiencing the same issues. does someone have to be seriously injured or killed for someone to take notice? nissan refuses to recognize the issue. this vehicle should be recalled right away! *tr

I have experienced several time when my readmission would slip and not engage on my 2003 nissan murano. now while driving down the highway with my carpool from work with me, a small beep from under the dash goes off and my transmission goes completely out. now i find out that nissan has had this problem for several years and has done nothing to recall or fix this problem. i was going to buy another murano but now i am looking at a $5,000.00 bill just to get it running. i am very upset with nissan as this car should not have lost a transmission so fast. *tr

We began experiencing transmission problems approximately 1 year ago. the first indication of trouble was the inability of keeping a set speed while vehicle was set in cruise control. we could hear the transmission struggling to get to the set speed and could see the rpm shoot up at the same time. the other common problem occurs while veh is at a complete stop and then the accelerator is pressed in order to proceed (i.e. through an intersection), the veh will not move for several seconds while continuing to press the accel pedal. then, very abruptly the veh will shoot into the intersection at a high rate of speed. *** this seems to be a continuing but intermittent problem. it occurs without warning-sometimes at high speeds on a freeway, often at low speeds in stop and go traffic. recently, while on a very busy and dangerous roadway in lexington,ky during rush hour, i experienced the inability to reach the speed limit of 55 mph. while attempting to reach the speed, the tachometer (rpm) would increase to near warning (red zone) levels. i felt as a driver that i was completely helpless and in possible danger from the heavy traffic and my distraction. the town we live in has a high number of 4-way stop intersections. we have 2 school-aged children and do a lot of in-town driving. if there is a hesitation by me as a driver due to a mechanical problem, the other 3 drivers may not realize that i have established an intent to move into the 4-way intersection. in the past, a driver of one of the other 3 cars has entered the int and i have had to make an emergency type stop to avoid a collision. our nissan dealership (glenn nissan-lexington,ky) examined our vehicle on 5/6/2008. they have advised us that our cvt transmission needs to be replaced. estimated cost $5,030.00. the codes given are dtc po868, p1778. mileage 97148. we did purchase the extended warranty, and are past the 72 month point (although still under the 100k mileage point). *tr

Nissan murano has a design flaw with its transfer case. it cracks in half on cars with low mileage. if it happens on a highway, car stops in the middle of the highway with potential massive fatal accidents. my car broke at 44k and nissan refused to replace the part as it was a month after the warranty expired. i found out on www.nissanmurano.org forum that many, many cars has this problem which is evidently an engineering design issue, but nissan refuses to acknowledge the problem. one car broke down in canada in the middle of nowhere with a small baby in the car in winter time. it a miracle that baby survived . *tr

Feb 13 2008 - took my 2003 nissan murano in for recall. also asked them to check the transmission oil, since the cap says to be checked only by dealer and i've been having the problem of hesitation, while trying to accelerate from a stop. alternator. the other recall on some sort of protector, was re-scheduled, they had to order parts. he advised that the transmission oil was okay, but will probably need to do an oil change. feb 27 2008 - parts arrived, dropped off car to do the recall on protector and fix sun visor. later in the day, i was advised that not all the parts for the recall came in. and the part for the sun visor was a different part. rescheduled for mar 12, 2008. i also asked about changing the transmission fluid, he quoted me approx. $150.00. agreed to schedule an appointment next time i was in. mar 1, 2008 - first trip of the day, from a stop at intersection, accelerated to get onto main highway, we go approx 5 feet and the car slips out of gear and unable to go any further. press the gas pedal and no rev. called for a tow, and took my murano to nissan service. i was advised that no technician available until monday. mar 3, 2008 - monday noon, called nissan to check on my vehicle. advised that they were trying to get in touch with nissan on the mainland for advice on how to fix. the transmission might need to be replaced. they will let me know tomorrow. mar 4, 2008 - tuesday noon, called to check on my vehicle. they have yet to get in touch with nissan on the mainland. they will have more information for me tomorrow. mar 6, 2008 - the nissan service supervisor called to advise that my transaxle needs to be replaced for approx. $4485. 00 transaxle, $850.00 labor. no explanation on what nissan on the mainland had suggested. he said he would get in touch with them and let me know tomorrow. *tr

I stopped at a stoplight and when it turned green i attempted to proceed. the car would not move forward .the car behind me almost ran into me and many others started blowing their horn. the murano moved about 6 feet limping forward slowly the stopped again. the light changed and i was stuck in the middle of a 4 lane ( 2 each way ) road. it took about 5 minutes to get into the correct lane and the car had a top speed of less then 10 mph. i pulled in a non service gas station and went in for lunch. about 3/4 of an hour later i returned to the car which ran fine..went to the airport and returned almost home before it happened again at another stoplight. while waiting for the 2003 murano to move a transport behind me jumped the curb to get around me and also gave me the finger. i took the murano into a dealer who had never heard of the problem i mentioned ( but they told me it went into limp mode so i was sure that they had lots of experience with the specific problem. i took the murano in on march 9th and picked it up march 15th after having the transmission replaced. on returned the murano to the dealer on monday april 9th i once again returned to the dealer because the murano did not feel right. i asked if the mechanic could come with me and test drive it. i drove about 4 blocks from the dealership and pulled over to let the mechanic drive it since he thought it was just fine. he got behind the wheel and i noticed he was shifting from forward to reverse and back again, then he told me it would not move. finally it limped back to the dealer with 4 way lights flashing. the customer service rep at vero us 1 nissan - hyundi wrote up another work order and on april 20th i picked up the murano with a second replacement transmission in 25 days. to this day neither nissan usa or nissan canada have admitted there is an inherent safety problem with the murano 2003-2004 cvt transmission due to failure and shutdown of the transmission. *tr

My 2003 nissan murano fails to accelerate after having driven on the highway and exiting at a stop light. the gas pedal needs to be pressed down almost to the floor before the car begins to slowly move and sometimes the wheels spin out and the car will immediately zoom forward. driving in stop & go traffic has become very dangerous because turning left along with normal movement through traffic has been vastly slowed. *tr

I have owned my nissan murano 2003 for about two years and a few months ago it started to hesitate while i was in stop and go traffic. i learned that by turning the car off for a few seconds the problem would go away. then last week, my transmission started to make a strange noise and when i went to get my car fixed...my mechanic said that the cvt needed to be replaced and that nissan is the only one that can fix it. the cvt is destroyed after 110k miles and with it's demise it took our and destroyed the transfer case totaling $7200 to fix. while looking at the consumer reports for this vehicle...it looks as if i am not alone in this situation and that nissan has turned their backs on this initial product by not acknowledging the design flaws and chronic problems with this new cvt technology. i am currently waiting for nissan to step up to the plate and make this right but if history and the correspondence with other murano owners...i am not going to be satisfied with nissan's stance. i would like to help initiate a class action against nissan for both the cost to fix this known problem and the frustration this vehicle has given me. *tr

2003 nissan murano. after 1.5 hours of highway driving, stopped car at stop light. when accelerator depressed, car was unresponsive for 5 seconds, then lurched forward. moments later, accelerator could be depressed to floor (in the middle of a traffic intersection) with unresponsive rpm and acceleration. once car shut off, car operated fine at highway speeds for remainder of trip. within a week, while on vacation out-of-state, same problems occurs again. murano is unresponsive once auto is slowed from highway speeds to stop-and-go traffic on highway. able to get auto off highway although once clear of the highway, auto will not accelerate from stop light. car remains unresponsive until shut down and restarted. once running, car seems to chug and lurch at all speeds. murano was immediately serviced (the following day) at faulkner nissan in harrisburg, pa while on vacation and diagnosed with faulty transmission valve body. replaced at cost of $1800+. on return trip to home (newport, ri), vehicle seems to be fine until decelerating for stop and go traffic. once that occurs, it experiences countless transmission surges and shakes at all speeds. from standstill, car is unresponsive and often stutters and shakes. on return to home dealership (just one week after first service), dealer (barry nissan, newport, ri), replaces transmission control unit ($1300+) yet still is unsure if that is the fix. nissan consumer affairs has yet to return my call despite my initial complaint and multiple efforts to contact them again. *jb

I noticed the rpm rev uncontrollably between 2 and 3k while driving and didn't think anything of it as no lights had come on with the vehicle. i began to notice that on hot days and days when i was in stop and go traffic the vehicle would respond extremely slow and then 10-15 seconds later would rev up almost to 4k rpm almost causing me to hit the car in front of me. at first i thought it was due to the gasoline in the vehicle. so i continued to drive the car. then a couple of weeks later i get stuck in stop and go traffic .. the car again begins to respond super slowly 10-20 seconds. i exited the freeway and came to a stop light to make a right turn. my car sits.. and sits.. and then takes off at 60mph at a stopped turn right and i almost hit a car. i've called the service center at the nissan in my area and they claim that they have never heard of the issues that i have stated and that they need to keep my vehicle for a day to duplicate what's going on. after reading all of the post by other owners there is something seriously wrong with something in the cars transmission. if i have to replace the entire transmission at $6000 because of a $5 sensor that to me seems like a crock. i think that something needs to be done about this because you can guarantee the owners that own these slow responding cars will sell them or trade them in and another unsuspecting owner on a hot and stop and go traffic day wont know what's going on with their brand new used 10 point inspected vehicle. i think that something needs to be done about this or their will be loss of life due to this design flaw. right now i have not had my failing parts fixed because i will not pay the $6,000 to replace a transmission. i will probably end up trading the car in and using the $6,000 to purchase another vehicle that does not have these problems. *jb

I own a 2003 nissan murano, that is no longer operational due to a faulty transmission. on the 26th of november 2006, the transmission seized and stopped operating, as i was driving on the highway. now i have a 3 year old, $35,000 dollar vehicle, which may as well be a paperweight. the vehicle is sitting in my driveway, awaiting repairs. i take care of this vehicle as if it were my own child. i ensure that the oil is replaced every 3,000 miles religiously, and i have spent hundreds of dollars for routine scheduled services. to sustain a nissan murano is not a cheap task. the last scheduled service was a 60,000 mile maintenance and it cost me well over $500 dollars. i ensure that the maintenance is being completed, because i understand the importance of routine services. when i purchased this nissan murano, i had no idea it would give me so many headaches. i have been to the nissan dealers for unscheduled warranty repair at least 5 times a year, since i purchased it. some of the issues i have had with the suv are, the check engine light turning on, unexplained vehicle vibrations when driving, car seizing in the middle of road, bad brakes, alternator had to be exchanged, battery went bad, and my transmission would not fall into gear. i called the nissan consumer toll free number and the nissan corporation is asking me to consolidate the records of everything that has been repaired on the car, and fax it to them. it seems that conveniently enough, nissan does not have records of any maintenance that was performed at authorized nissan dealers. i was told that this information had to be faxed first, before a decision can be made. the transmission has had previous difficulties covered under the warranty and had continued to malfunction when the current incident occurred. the only decision i would like to receive, as soon as possible is, if the nissan corporation is going to grant my request to fix my transmission at no cost. *jb

Experienced clicking sound and subsequent loss of power while driving in mountainous area. 2003 murano was completely disabled with what turned out to be complete failure of cvt transmission in nissan dealer maintained vehicle with 77,000 miles on odometer. at this point, nissan has offered no goodwill help in replacing $5000 cvt transmission, citing outside of 60,000 mile drive train warranty. reliability of cvt technology in 2003 model is questionable , if complete failure on cvt is normal wear and tear at 77,000 miles. with exception of replacing two radiators and this cvt failure, i have had been very happy with vehicle. *nm

After driving on a highway at 55+mph, for more than a half hour, if you then get into stop and go or city traffic, and you are stopped, if you press on the accelerator, the car will not respond for 5-10 seconds, then will lunge forward. this is not only annoying, it is so dangerous. now that i am aware of it, i try to leave lots of space between me and the car in front of me (not always possible in the city). it only seems to happen under the conditions described above. i noticed this happening a little over a year after purchasing my murano. *nm

2003 nissan murano, at 2500 miles transmission seems to skip or disengage for a second at highway speeds. dealer could not reproduce problem. at 12000 miles vehicle started to act up and same thing happen, this time vehicle seemed like it was in neutral gear. vehicle recalled for alternator replacement, same week and i informed the dealer of the issue, they seemed not too concerned. at 35000 miles when driving in reverse, transmission clink noise. at 58000 took vehicle to dealer with a complaint that the transmission is acting up. dealer installed a gas tank shied, and did not care to investigate the transmission issue and said all are ok. 64000 miles, after stopping at a traffic light, vehicle will not move forward, acceleration pedal pushed all the way. vehicle will then suddenly pickup speed and lung forward. vehicle rpm will kick up and down while driving at steady and cruising speeds giving the vehicle a feeling of sudden acceleration and deceleration. situation is getting worse and no help from dealer since he recently went out of business. *nm

To date, we have had numerous problems with our 2003 murano. we have replaced the throttle body, motor mount, battery, tcm and transmission. on july 21, 2006 our murano made a loud noise then quit moving. we had it towed to the dealership where they stated it needed a new tcm. that did not fix the problem so they said we needed a new transmission. we had 64,000 miles. since then we had the car for one day and took it back for yet a new problem with the rear axle. *nm

While on the highway and then in stop and go traffic i pressed on the gas and my murano moved slowly, then picked up speed. i took it to the dealer while under warranty, 57,898 miles, but they said the computer only needed to be reset. they did not document this problem. the problem didn't happen again until around 66,000 miles. i took it back they said they could not find anything. the problem happened again at around 68,000 but more and more during stop and go traffic and now they say i need a valve body and more than likely a new transmission at $6000. nissan but out a service bulletin telling the repair shops to look for this problem because they know its a problem. i called nissan and they said its my problem. they won't fix it nor will they help to fix it. this is a very dangerous problem if you need the power and suddenly you don't have it. *jb

2003 nissan murano awd would accelerate and skip gears. if you are in stop and go traffic and you take your foot off the gas the car will lunge forward and try to go into a higher gear then first. this started happening intermittently then it happened several times in one day the friday before memorial day 2006. on saturday when we started the car it made a horrible clunking noise. we drove the car to the dealer and several days later we were told we would need a brand new transmission at a cost of $4000. the car has 78,000 miles and is 32 months old. all the miles are highway miles. we do not have an extended warranty because we have always owned nissan cars and never had a problem. i have conducted research and found several consumers have experienced the transmission problems at various life cycles of the vehicle. some had problems with in the first thousand miles. it is suspected that the problems are caused by the new cvt technology that nissan first introduced in the nissan murano in 2003. i think this is a serious problem. *nm

Overall the vehicle has been very good. at approximately 65,000 miles the transmission failed and needed to be replaced. the day before it failed i heard a noise but could not determine where it was coming from. on the day it failed the noise seemed not to be present. i exited a highway after a 1 1/2 drive and the transmission made a bump sound that made the car shake for an instant. then, the transmission seemed not to engage. the car appeared to go into limp mode. i traveled for a few miles to a small town. after being parked for a few minutes the transmission again engaged. i called the dealer, and he said to get vehicle to them , and they would take a look. a few times along the way the transmission slipped. i was informed the following day that the transmission needed to be replaced at a cost of over $5,000. nissan refused to help in anyway. they were simply turning their back on me because the warranty expired at 60,000 miles. i requested any contribution for repairs and they refused. it was a very sad corporate policy.*ak

3/7/2005while driving to las vegas from dolan springs, when stopped at stop light in boulder city, nv- heard a loud clunk and the transmission locked up. called nissan roadside service and they towed to douglas nissan in henderson, nv. 3/11/2005picked up car at douglas nissan. on the way back to dolan springs, az.we smelled a lot of hot burning and when we stopped, we saw some smoke. the next day, we called douglas nissan and they said wait for about 2 weeks to see if it continues, it is probably residue. 3/19/2005while in las vegas, we stopped at douglas nissan to check we still had hot, burning smell. they discovered that the seal(s) were leaking. 3/23//2005we picked up the car and began drive back to dolan springs, az. when we got to about 15 miles (boulder city, nv), we again got the hot burning smell. we called douglas they found that the car was not fixed and was still leaking. we left car and they said would be done on 3/25. 3/24/2005made call to nissan nissan rep assured us car would be ready on 3/25. 3/26/2005we stopped back- car was still not fixed. they were not sure when it would be fixed. 3/29/2005car still at douglas nissan and no idea when it will be fixed. they said they now thought it might have something to do with all-wheel drive seal. 4/30/2005car still not fixed. parts ordered- may be on back order. no idea when it would be done. no explanation why car has been in dealership since 3/11- still not fixed. basically, although we have had 2 months of frustration and stress, we still have enough confidence in nissan and the murano to purchase a new murano. *nm

I have had my murano 1 year and had no problems until now. it is a 2003 and has 22,000 miles on it. we were on vacation about 350 miles from home and i noticed what i thought was the transmission acting up. it just continued to get worse. i would stop at a red light and depress the accelator and nothing would happen until about 1 minute later. luckily we made it in to a nissan dealer and they checked it out and got with nissan tech support. they verified it was the transmission. they are going to replace the entire transmission with a new one. thank goodness it is under warranty! the nissan dealership rented me a car to get back home from vacation and we will have to drive 350 miles back to pick up my murano in about 3 to 4 days.

POWER TRAIN - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - CONTROL MODULE (TCM, PCM)

While driving down the road, it would not go forward, the engine would rev but the car wouldn't move. on 3-31-08 it was towed to a reputable transmission shop. they ran a diagnosis and said the transmission control module (tcm) was faulty and that they couldn't fix it. on 4-1-08 the car was towed to jack ingram nissan in montgomery, al. i described all of the symptoms to the service rep and left it. on 4-2-08 they called and said the trans and tcm were fine but that one of the motor mounts was broken. i asked them if this would create the problems i was having and i was told yes, so i told them to replace the mount. a few hours later they called back and said the other mount was cracked and needed to be replaced so i told them to replace that one also. the total bill was $686 and we picked the car up the next morning, 4-3-08, my daughter returned to fl on 4-7. on 4-10, while returning to alabama from florida the car did the exact same thing. my daughter tried to make a turn and the car wouldn't move. she coasted into a parking lot and called me. luckily she was in andalusia, al so i called massey automotive and they towed the vehicle to their shop. the next day, 4-11, a rep from massey called and said the tcm and trans were both bad and needed to be replaced. also, they mentioned when they entered the vin into the nissan database (?) it showed where the trans had already been replaced twice at dealerships in ga. they also said they felt the faulty tcm caused the previous two trans to go bad. luckily, the trans was still under warranty from the dealer in ga so it's being replaced at no cost to us. however, the tcm must be replaced and that's going to cost me approx. $900. why didn't jack ingram tell us about the previous trans problems? i've tried to call them twice and the service manager has yet to return my calls. additionally, i've had two individuals look at the old mounts and they said they couldn't see where they needed to be replaced. *tr

This is a copy of the text i sent nissan. to: interested parties nissan usa reference # 5652837. i now own a 2003 murano vin 3 j. i have a problem that i am not resolved on and details are as follows: i am a reserve navy officer now deployed to iraq, which makes this entire evolution a bit difficult. my son chris wilson age 22 was driving the murano on march 14, 2007 near his college in cullowhee, north carolina when while at highway speed noticed the check engine light illuminated and then experienced an immediate loss of power and engine shutdown. he was able to get the vehicle out of active traffic safely with no power steering or brake assist. witnesses to the event claimed he was lucky and skilled to maneuver off the highway without endangering himself and others in traffic. we then searched for local dealerships to take the vehicle to contacted them and arranged for the vehicle to be towed there. after an analysis and the part number of a transmission control module tcm. i went to the nissan usa web site and researched recalls that had been issued for 2003 muranos. i was very interested to find one for vin numbersjn8az08t*3w 100007-100032,jn8az08w* 200005-200071. i realize that my vin number is not one of these and the nice folks at the call center and the service folks at the dealerships are powerless to do anything unless there is a vin match. the recall quotes: ⿿on some 2003 muranos there is a possibility that the engine might stop running while being driven if the crank position sensor fails. this may also result in the ⿿service engine soon⿝ light coming on or reduced engine power. it is the same result as what happened to my car. i am a professional mechanical engineer and i feel ethically sound in making the request and maintaining an unresolved position on this matter. *ak

Like the many, many other complaints on here as well as other internet sites, i too have a faulty transfer case on my awd. i took mine in to the dealer because i was experiencing a burning oil smell. the replaced the transfer case seal at a cost of $1700, it didn't work, still leaked oil. they replaced it again since the first seal was under warranty about a month later, still did not work. now, as you would expect, i am told the whole transfer case needs to be replaced. they have offered to do so for another $800+ dollars with no labor charge but they also seem very reluctant to do so. i am guessing there is more wrong then what they are telling me and they know they will just see me back in there in a few more months for more repairs. i have spent $4,000 on repairs in the past 8 months and my 2003 murano has become a money pit. i still owe on it, so i can't afford to get rid of it, not that anyone would buy it. i am done with the dealership which everyone advised me not to go to but i thought i was making a good decisions since they are nissan, stupid choice on my part. i will never buy another nissan again, it has been nothing but problems and the really sad thing, the vehicle and a sturdy, good handling vehicle. nissan is losing a lot of customers in this process by not owning up to their faulty product. i guess when you make enough money, it's no big deal to lose a few hundred of us in the process!

*tr

I was out completing last minute christmas shopping when my car starting making a loud clicking noise then stopped in the middle of traffic. the car would not go forward nor in reverse. i called my insurance company which had it towed to nissan which informed me i would need a new cvt, which irritates me more because i had just gotten my car serviced on 18 december 09 and everything was suppose to be good to go. i feel completely helpless because the car at most is worth only 8 to 9,000. by the looks of all the complaints a new transmission is going to run me 3-5,000. i ensured i serviced my murano only by nissan at times prescribed and i'm forced to shell out more money on a $32,000 vehicle.

*tr

My vehicle is all wheel drive. when i took it in for normal maintenance i was advised the transfer case was locked in all wheel drive. there is no warning light to advise that this has happened. i don't know how many miles the car was driven in this condition. it so happens that i had recently passed my warranty period and had to pay a very large amount to repair it. if a warning light had gone on i would have been able to repair this sooner under warranty. plus, i had recently returned from a long two week drive in hot desert country. i would imagine it was not wise or safe to be in all wheel drive under hot road driving conditions. i asked the manufacturer to inform me how often their vehicles have this problem but i had no response from them. i did ask my dealership and they told me at least one other vehicle had the same problem locally. *jb

On monday, 11/13/06 i took my 2003 nissan murano in for winterizing & to have them check out a humming noise to the nissan dealer. later that day i was called and told the noise was related to the transfer case which needed to be replaced at my cost, over $4000 to repair. this vehicle has only 89,000 miles. decided to get a second opinion and had the vehicle moved to another nissan dealer. this nissan dealer has repaired another murano with the same situation and so was able to diagnose that it is not the transfer case, but it is the transmission. unfortunately the cost is even more - over $6000. being i did not purchase an extended warranty, i'm responsible for the costs. what i don't understand is the why for the failure. there was no indication that either the transfer case or transmission were failing when the car was being driven. i called my salesperson about the situation and he informed me he had a friend that had his transfer case fail at approximately the same miles. in my opinion, major components - transmissions or transfer cases should not be failing at this mileage and would like for someone to pursue to determine if there is a recall situation.*jb
