PE08065NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.11/18/200807/02/2009DRIVER SEAT ANCHOR FAILURE
This investigation concerns structural failure of the anchor/bracket on the left rear side of the driver's seat.the concern is that such failures may alter the driver's seated position so as to reduce effectiveness of the occupant protection system or potentially compromise vehicle control.failure of the subject anchor bracket results from metal fatigue and causes rearward tilting of the driver's seat.these failures usually occur during driver ingress but may also occur while the vehicle is being operated.the safety related concerns during actual vehicle use were not validated by this investigation.while the number of complaints of this problem is relatively high, only three very minor, undocumented injuries were reported.the reported injuries occurred during driver ingress, not while the vehicle was in motion.investigation disclosed that the apparent risk of compromise to vehicle control has not been demonstrated.investigation also disclosed that the apparent risk of collapse of the driver's seat back has not been demonstrateda safety related defect trend was not identified and this investigation has been closed.

When vehicle was purchased i noticed power seat was tilting sideways when adjusting. my toddler was able to push with both feet hard enough to make the seat lean sideways as well. god forbid i get into an accident!! took into nissan dealership who in turn explained this was part of the trim package since it was a power seat, even though it is a metal part with no electronic function. total cost to replace this little bracket, just a mere $1,600. i'm sure this malfunction has been the cause of major injuries and may have even costs lives. a recall would be nice nissan! way to go show concern and back your product, i will never buy a nissan again. *tr

While driving through the mountains, on very windy roads, i was in a turn to the right when i heard a loud pop and the front drivers seat dropped to back and to the lft, causing me to swerve and nearly impact the median. i pulled over and look under the seat an saw that the rear bracket had snapped on the left hand side. doing some research, i am learning that this has happened to hundereds of people. i feel that this is a major issue and that i was spared only by the grace of god. this issue needs to be addressed by nissan before somone dies.

I heard a loud pop pulling into my driveway and the seat began to rock. after exiting the vehicle, i look under the seat to try to ascertain where the sound i heard originated. it was dark outside, so seeing nothing amiss it wasn't until the next morning that discovered that the seat was rocking and bouncing 4-6 inches under weight. i discovered that there is a broken weld under the seat. from its appearance, seems that shouldn't be hard to fix... (sighs) if only that were true. i purchased nissan for the reputation it once had, i was very disappointed to find numerous complaints about this same issue and no move by nissan corp to recall or reinforce these shoddy welds. i am currently riding with this seat partially supported by rock because the dealership is quoting a $4000 to replace the entire chair. even tried a salvage yard, to no avail. i am in constant distress about driving this vehicle, but have no option but to continue; i feel at the risk of life and limb should the remaining support break, i don't even want to put my kids in the car, but again... i have no choice! it's only a matter of time before this issue puts blood on nissan's hands.

The murano seat frames are known to have a weak spot where the weld will break -causing your drivers seat to rock back and forth - or lean badly to one side. this cause sometime an unintentional sudden move which cause changing the steering wheel direction. that might cause an accident in some cases. another major problem. is the car get into sudden power loss after a while of driving after making a full stop. for example on traffic light or stop sign. it will take very very slow taking off and then will get the power back after few seconds. this delay may cause an accident in example of making left turn on a traffic intersection. you will not have any power to move the car for about 2-4 seconds . thanks

My wife was driving and all of the sudden her seat (drivers seat) dropped (towards the drivers door) about causing her to lose control of the vehicle. after inspecting the seat, with no weight on it, attempting to raise the seat it would only raise on the side towards the middle of the car. this is a very dangerous situation for someone who raises the seat in order to see over the hood. we purchased this vehicle because she felt safe, because she could raise the seat to see over the hood and sit higher than other traffic. looking through this list, if you have it sort for seats it pulled up 82 complaints. most of which were broken frames that they (nissan) had to redesign. i don't know why i would need to pay the estimated $800 plus dollars to have the chair frame replaced if nissan redesigned it because they knew it was defective.

Seat frame broke causing seat to suddenly drop several inches on one side.

The driver's side seat-bottom bracket has been broken for approximately 2 years, but has never been a major issue. just recently, however, it became a major safety issue when i adjusted the seat, and it would not go back to where i had it. namely, when i adjusted the seat upwards, it would not go back down. being a tall guy, at 6'4, this meant my knees were shoved into the dash and my head hit the ceiling. additionally, when accelerating and braking, the seat rocks back and forth unpredictably. to mediate the problem, the seat bracket is being replaced. i will be asking for the broken part.
06/24/2011102300
The driver's seat in my 2003 nissan murano suddenly, without warning broke away from the anchor point on the left side. i heard a loud snap or crack and the seat sagged perceptively down and to the left. fortunatly i was travelling in a straight line at a moderate speed. i believe that if i had been negotiating a sharp turn with any more speed i would have been in significant jeopardy. i believe this defect in the seat attachment represents a significant hazard to the public and should be corrected by nissan. when i took the car to the dealer i was informed that the cost to repair the seat was $700.00. while this may not seem like a lot of money to pay in order to keep your car safe it surely may prevent some people from having the repairs done and as a result keep unsafe cars on the road. as i understand it nissan is unwilling to do anything to eliminate the problem or participate in the repair after the part fails. i plan to have the necessary repairs made and i will keep the defective parts for inspection. i think it was significant that the service technician told me that my car would not pass safety inspection in virginia with a broken seat. does that not suggest that the issue belongs within the purview of the nhtsa and that perhaps the organization should take steps to eliminate this very real problem or at least make sure that nissan participates in the necessary repairs.

The 8-way power seat first stopped moving the inner left side (closest to the seat back) of the driver's seat (effectively making the power seat non-functional); the seat later started moving, rocking, slightly forward, noticeably (and unfortunately) during braking.

My 2003 murano drivers seat was repaired in 2005 for the rocking symptom i paid $660.00. four years later, the bracket on the seat frame broke again, and this time the dealer charged $1100 to repair it. when i asked them whether it was the same parts that failed, they said no. turns out that was not true. in 2005, the dealership followed the tsb for the seat repair which involved replacing two parts - 87458-ar06a (lifter link assembly) and 87454-ca61a (lift motor). now, those two parts have been combined into one part number - 87450-ca68a. actually, the most recent part is 87450-ca68b (i guess b suggests a revision). in either case, the dealer argued that since its a different part number, its a different part. its actually the same thing. i filed a complaint with nna consumer affairs and they denied any warranty assistance even though the issue originally manifested during the warranty period. what is quite clear is that the drivers seat issue is a very common one. a search of nhtsa reveals hundreds of cases where the seat has failed on 2003-2006 muranos. nissanmurano.org also has a long running thread on the failure.

I was driving my 2003 nissan murano on the highway in normal traffic and i heard a pop and my driver seat dropped slightlly to the right. once i stopped the vehicle i looked under the seat to investigate, i didn't see anything loose or broken off. i then tried to move the seat and the seat easily moves off of the floor and up to the left side of the vehicle. i immediatley felt that this was a safety issue in driving the car. i was thankful that the seat did not move dramatically while i was driving as i am sure this would have caused an accident. the failure occured the one time but the seat now continually moves if making a fast stop. we have taken the vehicle to the dealership for repair and at this point we have been told the cost will not be covered by warranty or recall and will be at least $1000. the dealer explained the problem as a cracked seat frame. if the seat frame is cracking during normal use with an average size person (125 lbs) i can't imagine how the seat would handle a full on accident, especially if the frame is already cracked. not to mention the seat frame cracking could cause the accident.

My drivers side seat suddenly made a metallic popping noise and my seat tilted backwards while i was driving. upon investigating the problem, thinking perhaps a bolt had loosened, discovered that the support bars for the seat had completely broken away from the seat. i am dismayed by the number of complaints i found on the internet with the exact same problem. my dealer said he has to fix one every couple of months. i am now propping my seat up with three reams of paper. this is a serious safety issue!

Driver's side car seat bracket broke on nissan murano. thank goodness we were not driving, stopping suddenly or having impact with another vehicle or object. this is a true safety issue. since vehicle is out of warranty, nissan responded that we are responsible for the $1150.00 repair. a repair for something that truly must be due to a lack of quality/defective part. *tr

2003 nissan murano. driver's seat squeaked from time to time since 2005. it has been seen at a dealership on several occasions, but always referred as normal wear and tear. some added lubrication to stop it from making noise and it stopped for a time. in august of 2009 i moved to virginia from florida. the roads in va have far more curves and hills than those in fl. today the seat back fell backwards as i was driving. i pulled over and noticed that the lower support bracket, just above the seat track, for the seat had split in half. i called my local dealer and was told i had to make an appointment to look it over. online i was quickly able to find many websites speaking of similar incidents and some had the exact outcome as that of my seat. i also noted nhtsa action number pe08065. i was extremely disappointed in my car, which upto this point i had full confidence in. i don't think i will be recommending this car or any other nissan for that matter. *tr

Several weeks ago i noticed that the driver's seat of my 2003 nissan murano was rocking back and forth, particularly around curves. this week, the left back side of the driver's seat broke. the left back side of the seat is no longer stationary. it moves up and down with any turn or bump. the seat is no longer level or properly supportive. i went to a nissan forum and realized that this is the same problem that many other nissan murano owners have had. the descriptions of the problem are identical to what i have experienced. my car is out of warranty and i do not have the $900. that everyone is reporting is quoted to repair the problem. *tr

I have a 2003 nissan murano. the drivers side seat frame has broken causing the seat to over left to right and frontward and backward freely, it is obvious that in a crash with a seat frame broken you chances of being seriously hurt by the seat coming loose are increased dramatically. talked to the nissan reps and they told us to take it to a nissan mechanic to have the problem looked at and then they may be able to do something about it. looking at other posts on the internet this is a common problem that nissan will do nothing about for the car owner. *tr

2003 murano driver seat assembly has broken for the second time in different location. first time was under the front part of the seat steel support rod was dislodged from steel seat support about a month ago and i had to have it welded back together. now the back steel support has broken. nissan dealers say it is not covered in any warranty they have and it will cost approximately 1000.00 for them to order a new seat and install it. i've read multiple other complaints on this very same issue and this is very concerning as this is clearly a safety issue that nissan chooses to ignore. please advise. *tr

My nissan murano 03 i took my car in for oil change and when i took it out my driver seat wouldn't move forward or back it wasn't that way when it went in and the dealer said it is a gear on the rail cost $700.00 also at the same time there is some rocking in my seat they said its a beginner of a crack rail , the cost to replace $1200.00 sounds dangerous and would think nissan to recall these problems with the seats which can be dangerous if stopping suddenly they should recall and go after the supplier of the steel . why make the citizens paid for there mistakes. *tr

On 14 sep 09 took car (03 nissan murano) into local nissan dealership to figure out why driver side seat when sitting on the seat would go to the floor. initially i thought that a spring in the seat had worn out; but i was told by the dealership service representative that the rail system that the seat was fixed to had cracked and the cost would be $800.00 to repair. how does a steel rail system crack? i was also informed by the nissan service representative that this was a potential safety hazard because the seat was not securely fastened and would rock from side to side. *tr

Front drivers seat mounting bracket has been replaced four times because it rocks when driving and/or stopping. this is an obvious dangerous situation that can very easily cause serious injury and/or death to the driver and possible other people in the vehicle in the event the drivers loses complete control if this seat bracket breaks. i just had it replaced again, and it has the exact same problem. nissan has obviously made a defective product and keeps installing the same defective type when a customer brings it back for repair. all dealers consider this a problem but, they also express there is nothing they can do if they keep getting defective replacement parts.. ie: old stock. *tr

The driver seat has become loose and rocks forward and back. the driver seat rocks on the pivot of the front-left and rear-right. the rocking motion occurs during vehicle acceleration and braking. the seat failed about 1 month after extended warranty expired. i cannot afford the $1200 repair at this time. the unsecured seat is dangerous and the operator is subject to injury or death in the event of a crash. the seat is also a distraction while operating the vehicle, as an audible snap is heard along with a jolting force causing a slight reposition of my body. *tr

2003 nissan murano. drivers seat mount, left rear, broke in 2006 (out of warranty, normal weight drivers). after many calls to nissan customer service, they covered the repair ($900). now, april 2009, same seat mount broke. this is an issue that needs to have a recall. many complaints found online of this issue not only in 2003 model, but also 2004 and 2005. this is a safety issue! a $900 repair is not something everyone can afford and driving with a broken seat mount is extremely dangerous! *tr

Driver seat on 2003 nissan murano has breaking seat frame. seat tilts toward driver door on turns making it extremely hard to control the vehicle. nissan refuses to acknowledge there is a safety or manufacturing problem when contacted. have found over a thousand reports of same condition on 2003-2006 models. this condition almost created a head-on collision while i was at the wheel. dealership cannot repair without nissan approval and as i stated nissan refuses to acknowledge there is a problem. it is either a design problem or a quality control issue for the manufacturer nissan. if this is not a legitimate safety issue then i guess i don't know what one really looks like. it appears that nissan is holding out until there are some fatality accidents before acting .. seems like then it will be too late. *tr

My 2003 nissan murano se awd driver side seat track broke and causes it to rock back and forth. this poor manufactured seat will cost me $1000.00 plus to replace and this is a hazard overlooked by many nissan murano owners, buyers and nhtsa. there should be a massive recall on these seats immediately. see consumer complaints: - http://www.nissanmurano.org/forums/showthread.php?threadid=1548 - http://www.justanswer.com/questions/17era-2005-nissan-murano-broken this is a potentially dangerous situation for all murano owners. *tr

I own a 2003 murano and the driver seat just broke one day. now when i drive, i am thrown against the door. any bump in the road relocates my driving foot due to a rocking motion.the dealership said it was the track assembly and could fix it. (part alone is $641) called nissan headquarters and was given the excuse it was out of warranty and no recalls have been listed. i believe this a design flaw that nissan won't live up to. the internet is full of complaints about this same exact problem. i have never had a driver's seat break in all my years of driving and owning cars. the mileage of my car should not matter. (i have a1936 truck and the seat has never broken. ) any type of movement is dangerous. please help me and other owners by making nissan face-up to this design flaw and have a recall on this particular issue. *tr

I noticed the drivers seat in my 2003 nissan murano rocking and leaning to the left. when i looked under the seat it was obvious that something was definitely broken. i took it to a nissan dealership where they informed me that the seat frame was broken and that the whole assembly would have to be replaced to the tune of 1030.00. when i googled this info i realized that murano owners all over the country were having this problem. some of them had the problem fixed only to have it happen again. this is obviously a design defect that nissan needs to take responsibility for. do we have to wait until this problem starts causing accidents and deaths? *tr

I have a 2003 nissan murano within the first three year of ownership the drivers seat has broken while driving normally when making a right hand turn. i've owned the car now for 5 years have 52k miles on it and this has now happened three times. the first time it was fixed andunder warranty the second time it was fixed but i was charged and the third time just happened on feb 7 2009 the second fix last edonly 1 week over 1 year. which negates the repair warranty. i am unsure how this will be fixed but a driver can and i have lost control f the vehicle as the seat drops back and you fall backward. this coul;d cause an accident and a potential fatal situation. a seat in a car should not reek once a year. *tr

The driver seat began rocking when taking corners. it was no longer attached to the frame as apparently some welding was performed insufficiently. it required a new seat assembly, which would have cost almost $1000. after searching the internet i realized this was not an isolated incident and wanted to file a report so the nhtsa can have a better understanding of the quantity of these issues. *tr

I have a 2003 nissan murano that has a broken seat track. after researching this failure, i discovered that this is a very common failure and that the only way to fix it is to buy the entire bottom seat assembly from nissan. the cost of the part alone is almost $700. i see this as a significant failure and a accident risk. *tr

My drivers seat in my 2003 nissan murano (which i just bought about 2-3 months ago) rocks forward and backward upon acceleration or stopping. it is slight but annoying. i took it to the dealership and they said they knew what the problem was and replaced the seat assembly for about $1800 worth of parts and labor. well, the problem is still there. i took it to another dealership and they say they can't reproduce it, but everyone who drives my car feels it. while at this point it is more annoying than a safety issue, i've read of cases where the whole thing breaks and the seat will come off! if i get in a crash and my seat does not stay attached to my car, there will be a lawsuit. p.s. i would add my vin if i had it with me, but it is at the dealership. *tr

The driver's seat has broken twice under warranty and repaired. now it had broken a third time out of warranty for the exact same issue. tsb's have been issued and now a new part number has been listed, which really combines the two previous fix part numbers. extremely unsafe! god help most nissan murano people if they get in an accident with a broken seat. *tr

I have a 2003 nissan murano and i have the issue of the front drivers seat rocking because a weld broke. this apparently is becoming a major issue and the dealer reminds you that it is a safety issue when they ask for $900. fortunately after speaking with another dealer i found there was a replacement part and it could be fixed for $350. i am reporting this because i am disappointed nissan is not covering this type of issue as it is not like a part wore out and second because if someone else has this issue and is injured or killed it should be recognized. i am very disappointed with nissan. *tr

The metal frame under the drivers seat broke in two places allowing the seat to rock side to side. its the frame directly under the seat and not the assembly bolted to floor. i consider this a safety defect because the car has not had any rough use and has been properly maintained. *tr

The frame in the drivers seat cracked, causing the seat to rock from side to side on turns. specifically the frame cracked on the left rear side of the drivers seat, so when i took left turns, the seat would tilt to the right. very dangerous feeling. my vehicle was past the 36k warranty (i had 50k on a 5 year old murano) so this was not covered by nissan. i think there should be safety recall since this is apparently a very common issue on muranos. *tr

I have a 2003 nissan murano with 39,893 miles. since i purchased the vehicle the driver's seat never felt secure, time passed and the problem has gotten worse, the dealer advised i would need a new seat frame. i requested a goodwill adjustment but nissan corp. denied my request. i feel this is a safety issue because i have a toddler and she sits in the backseat and if i were in an accident and the seat frame broke during impact it would certainly cause injury to my toddler and myself. *tr

Front drivers seat was lose about 6 months ago, dealer looked at it and told me that the entire seat assembly needs to be replaced for $1100. i called nissan as the car was just out of warranty and nissan would not covered seat replacement. recently the entire seat frame is damaged/cracked. thus causing the seat to sit incorrectly. this finally cracked fully while driving. which startled me initially as the car was moving and it felt as if i fell out of my seat. *tr

The failure of the drivers seat frame on my 2003 nissan murano. although this failure did not cause an accident, it could certainly could have caused one. the left rear support structure on the lower seat frame gave way suddenly causing the left side of the seat to drop about 8 inches. if this had happened while driving at highway speeds the sudden shift in position and loss of balance could have led to a serious accident. *tr

My driver's seat of my 2003 nissan murano started leaning. i took it into the dealership and they said the seat adjuster was broken. they would not return the car to me without completing the repair, sitting safety issues. nissan refuses to pay for the repair, so the car was held hostage until i paid for the repair. nissanusa says the dealership was correct in not returning the car without completing the repair, but they do not consider the repair covered under the extended warranty as a covered component, nor a manufacturers defect. while the car has 77k miles, they are primarily highway miles driven by me. i can count on my two hands the number of times the seat has been adjusted. the dealership said a piece of metal in the seat adjuster broke and it would soon puncture the seat and possibly cause the seat to malfunction. doesn't this sound like metal fatigue? *tr

Drivers seat failure began with loud, annoying squeaks. the squeaking resolved itself when the left side rail/seat support snapped. the seat now tips about 20deg off its level axis, and i am sure the integrity of the seat being safely secured to the vehicle has been compromised. this is not an isolated incident. nissan, while having a long standing tsb on tis, refuses to see it as a safety defect? what will it take? perhaps when the lawsuits start coming in from people being hurled from the vehicle in traffic incidents then they will sit up and notice. a seat belt can only work if it straps you to a secure seat!!! *tr

2003 nissan murano drivers seat subject to failure. seat becomes lose and moves upon acceleration and when turning corners. this problem has been identified by nissan murano owners on edmunds.com. tsb#ntb05-043a only temporarily fixes the problem and it gets progressively worse. when you return for repair and car is out of warranty they say it is a different part causing the problem and is not under warranty. the seat rocks forward and backwards and from side to side. *tr

I was parked at work and was getting out of my car when there was a loud pop noise. at that time the drivers seat dropped on the back left corner. my friend was parking beside and asked what the noise was. when you sat in the seat it dropped backwards to the left. i called and made a appointment with lake nissan-leesburg florida. driving this vehicle was very scary because everytime you hit a bump it through you backwards. i felt it was a safety issue. they said the whole rack assembly had to be replaced $689.95 and of course i had no warranty left (2003 model) they didn't think it was a safety issue. i had contacted other nissan dealers and they thought it was a issue and that this same thing had happened before to other muranos. if i had of been driving this vehicle i know that i would have wrecked or caused someone else to wreck. luckily i was parked. *tr

A few days ago; during normal driving and turning right on a street near my house the driver seat swim left pushing my body again the window and at the same time losing control. this is a very dangerous situation and if a car was locate at the other side could have been involve in an accident. the car is now out of warranty and the dealer wants over 500.00 for replacing the entire driver seat track. close inspection show that a metal bar running from left to right at the read location broke on the left site; this bar is the only think preventing the seat from moving left or right; it is clear that this bar is not strong enough; the metal was also twisted. nissan should have a recall on this; people live are at risk. *jb

While driving on the highway, the seat in my murano broke loose as i was headed into a curve. the seat actually threw me into the driver side door and caused me to jerk the wheel and run off of the road. upon thorough examination by my self and an authorized nissan dealership, a bracket that holds the seat secure to the track system had broken. the mechanic advised me that it was a defect and that he had not seen anything like it before. this particular support bracket is a critical piece of the seat assembly and without this piece the vehicle is difficult to safely drive and could cause an accident. also, the piece is most likely to break under tension such as entering a curve as was the situation in my case, or swerving to avoid an accident. in either event, the unexpected malfunction could cause the driver to loose control of the vehicle. more troubling is the possibility that the piece would break in a collision, thereby throwing the driver into the driver door and the driver's head into the glass. i have contacted both nissan and the dealership from which i purchased the vehicle about the part on numerous occasions. their stance is that though the part is defective, the vehicle is out of warranty and that they will neither repair my vehicle nor address the issue with a recall to avoid any future accidents or injuries. i even offered to send nissan pictures of the broken part and they were not interested. the representative did not even bother to log in the correct part when i spoke with him. he logged it as a broken seat track. when i advised him that it was not the seat track but the actual seat, he dismissed it by saying that was the category that nissan had established for seat malfunctions. *jb
