Odi received 14 reports of alleged engine stalling due to alternator failure on my 2003-2004 murano (subject) vehicles.all of the complaints reported that the vehicle could not be restarted after the stall occurred.based on these complaints, odi opened pe04-077 and later upgraded to ea05-006 for the subject vehicles.during ea05-006, additional failure data were identified as noted in the failure report summary above.on july 12, 2005, nissan notified nhtsa of a safety defect on my 2003-2005 murano vehicles produced from april 8, 2002 and september 24, 2004 (recall 05v-319).the notification stated that an open circuit in the alternator can occur due to wire fatigue caused by movement of the rotor coil during rapid changes in engine speed in vehicles equipped with a continuously variable transmission (cvt).higher engine compartment temperature in the murano compared to other nissan models may also be a contributing factor to the wire fatigue.nissan also reported that when this happens, the charge warning and brake warning lamps will illuminate and the battery will begin to discharge.after a short time, the engine will then enter a fail safe mode that limits vehicle speed.very shortly after reaching this condition, the engine will stop.nhtsa's testing, however, showed that although the warning lamps illuminate, the vehicle speed is limited to only 4-7 mph rather than what nhtsa considers a fail safe mode. nissan will instruct owners to return their vehicles to any nissan dealer for an alternator inspection and replacement, if required.note:some vehicles may have had the newly designed alternator previously installed under warranty.consequently, this investigation is closed.odi will monitor the effectiveness of the remedy and take further action if warranted.

I was stopped at traffic light, when light turned green i began to accelerate. i began to smell burning thru air vents and then at about 40 mph the car would not respond to my acceleration of gas pedal. i had lost all power and control of vehicle. the car behind me had to swerve suddenly to avoid me and it almost caused a serious wreck with my 4 children inside. i had battery checked and alternator checked and was told alternator was bad. well i replaced alternator and wouldn't you know it 2 weeks later, the same incident occurred, i was going about 35-40 mph and it just quit again. and again my 4 kids were inside as i was driving them to school! i've called to inquire about the recall for this issue and am told mine doesn't qualify. i've seen so many people with this issue. why isn't it being addressed. will it take having my 4 kids inside involved in an awful wreck? we need someone to help with this before something bad has to happen!! *tr

About 2 weeks ago i changed the battery because it wasn't working anymore, it started with the car losing power just a little bit and then come back when one morning it turned on and then died, i took the battery and got it charged but didn't last long, ended buying a new one. now for the past few days again the car lost starting losing power and back up, till today it completely died. so at the end we figured it was the alternator, found out online about other drivers with same issue with same model and year car and of a recall being done. *tr

All of the door locks do not work. i have had my murano in the shop 3 times and they cannot figure out the problem. i have now spent close to $1000 and the problem is still not fixed! they first replaced a switch in the driver's side door. that did not fix the problem. they then replaced the bcm, the locks worked for about a week and now they are not functioning again. this is a safety hazard because i am a single woman and should be able to lock and unlock my doors as needed. how many people have to file a complaint for the same issue before nissan does something about it??? it is absolutely ridiculous that i should have to spend almost $1000 and still not have functioning door locks!!! i know for a fact the problem is not the solenoids in the doors that control the locks because my repair shop tested each one in each door and they are properly functioning, which is what led us to check the bcm. when it was determined the bcm was bad, i had that replaced but obviously that is not the only problem. please do something about this issue!!!

I own a nissan murano and in may 08 driving on the freeway and without any warning we had a sudden loss of power. we managed to pull over, stopped the engine and restarted it. check engine light came on but we were going out of town and car drove fine and check engine light went off. we had the same problem on 9/6/08 and took the car to nissan dealership. they claim it was a wiring problem to the throttle connection and repaired it and assured me they had fixed the problem. driving home on an extremely busy freeway in rush hour it happened again, today 9/25 and this time the car behind me had to swerve to avoid me but i was near my exit and cruised to a stop. i was quite shaken. i turned the car off and it started again and immediately drove it to the dealership. they still have it and are checking it. this is an extremely dangerous situation. i have called nissan and they apparently do not have any complaints and also the dealership has not heard of this which is quite surprising as literally hundreds of complaints regarding the murano for same problem on websites. my complaint is that the 2004 nissan murano (less than 37,000 miles) is extremely dangerous to drive and nissan knows there is a problem and they are ignoring it. we have been lucky that we were not rear-ended at high speeds where someone could have been killed. i am waiting to hear back from nissan but the fact that the dealership has not heard of this problem is amazing, just type in nissan murano sudden loss of acceleration and you will see. not sure if anything can be done, but i want my complaint documentation in case someone dies due to this problem. *tr

I own a nissan murano 2004 automobile. since oct. 6 2004 i have had a battery & brake light come on & off. on oct. 9 within the morning time frame the battery, brake, abs and airbag light came on right before i stopped at a stop sign. once i came to a complete stop i pressed on the gas pedal and the car engine revved up but the murano went no where. i shut off the car and turned it back on and the car did not want to start at all. i tried boosting it and the murano did turn on but the car did not go anywhere. i did send it the nearest dealership and nissan of jersey city, n.j. did fix my problem in a very quick manner. it seemed to be a alternator problem. they have replaced my alternator with an updated version. *nm pe04077_cat

I recently had my 2004 murano at 12,000 miles towed to the dealership. the brake light and battery light went on, on the way to work in the morning and continued to be on all day. being that there was no sign of trouble except for the warning light and no nissan dealership in the area of where i work i proceeded through my day. i headed home and came to a stop sign and went to go accelerate and went no where as if i was in neutral. i idled to the side of the road so i could turn the truck on and off and still i could not accelerate. i idled to my house fortunately was around the corner and called the dealership. the service person asked if i could go in reverse so i tried and i could. i put it in drive and surprisingly was able to go forward so i was told to bring it in immediately. on my way to the dealership on the highway doing 65 to 70 in the evening traffic went to accelerate and went no where!!! i was in the middle of traffic doing 5 mph with no way getting to the shoulder which was so dangerous. finally a kind person let me go idle to the side to where i could call a tow truck. as i was sitting waiting for a tow truck, i tried to turn the truck on but it would not turn over. it seems to me that this problem is not being remedied as it should be before a person losses a life. this is a serious problem that is continuing through the models. it is being over looked at the expense of the consumer. i am paying for a car that has a great reputation as i were to think. *nm pe04077_cat

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle stalled intermittently. a nhtsa recall, #05v319000 was performed on the vehicle on march 28, 2005 concerning the electrical system; alternator/ generator/ regulator however, the recall did not remedy the problem. the dealership would not offer a second repair without charge under the recall.

Had the alternator replaced on a recall - subsequent the vehicle stopped 3 times without warning in traffic - transmission not engaged and no power - rolled to stop on highway and battery is dead so cannot restart - returned to dealer twice and first said they had forgot to reflash the engine after the recall installation of the alternator - after that it stopped again in traffic without warning for the third time - returned to dealer and they said this time the alternator cable was loose - since i felt the vehicle unsafe to drive, i asked they contact nissan at least for a new alternator and was willing to try one last time - nissan service refused to help and then i considered the vehicle unsafe to drive - unfortunately i am able via our lease company to dispose of this vehicle and get another - please check your records because in my case, the problems started after the alternator change and it is very dangerous to stall unexpectedly in freeway traffic - all happened in first quarter 2006 - service details available if requested. *jb

Dt: the contact stated the charger warning and brake warning lights illuminated. he immediately took the vehicle to the dealership. he spoke with half a dozen people in the dealership, who stated they were unaware of any problem with the vehicle in regard to the lights. the next morning he called the dealership to make an appointment for service. upon looking up the vin, they found there was recall 05v319000 concerning the alternator. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the work was performed. approximately 24 days later he received the recall letter concerning the alternator. the contact was concerned that he did not receive the letter in a timely manner, and they only sent it because of the failure. the manufacturer has not been contacted . *ak updated 3/17/2006 - the recall letter was received four month after the failure occurred. when the alternator failed the vehicle went into safe mode and could not be drive forward, only in reverse. *nm

My vehicle is at 22,000 miles. i am on my way to work, when the check engine light suddenly comes on. no sooner than the light came on, my car suddenly looses power, and coasts to a stop. i called giles nissan of lafayette, la, and had the vehicle towed in. i had an appointment set up from 2 weeks before this for the alternator recall and because my cd player kept saying check disc, and would not play a cd. this happened the wednesday before my scheduled appointment. so my car is at nissan overnight before i get a call saying they are just getting to my car, and that they do not have a loaner for me. i was told that it was the throttle position sensor that was bad, and that they had overnighted the part, but that the alternator and cd player would take longer. which really blew my mind, since i had an appointment to have those two things fixed. after almost 5 days without a vehicle, we bugged the dealership enough, that they finally got me a loaner car. on the monday. on wednesday, they called and said my car was ready. i picked the car up, and on my way home, the check engine light came on again. i was so afraid that the car would stop on me again, and now i'm in the middle of 5:00 traffic. the car is sputtering. kind of jumping. idling really high, and then when i go to stop, the car's rpms jump up above 1, and then back down before stopping. this causes the car to jump forward or jerk forward a bit. i dropped the car off this morning, and they said now one of the cylinders is misfiring. i don't know why my car was given back to me if it was not fixed. the problems i am having a serious. these could be potentially deadly problems. *jb

While driving down my street, my 2004 murano (only 7,000 miles) lost acceleration and i could not get down the street. thankfully i was not on the highway or i would have been stranded. i actually made it to my driveway where it stalled for good. i called the dealer and they had it towed to the dealership, and they replaced a defective alternator. it was all covered under warranty of course, but i think this type of failure could be potentially dangerous to other drivers of murano's.

 (1) i drove from chapel hill, nc to washington, dc the morning/afternoon of the alternator failure. i was sitting idle (with car and a/c on) in front of the vienna, va metro station waiting for a friend. i was driving myself and 3 other people to a concert being held that night (sunday june 26 2005) at nissan pavilion in bristown, va. (2) as i placed my car in park to drive away with my 3 friends inside i noticed that the car would not go over 1 or 2 mph. i stepped on the gas pedal, but the enginer would not rev. i placed the car in reverse...same thing. i placed the car in neutral and the car revved. the battery and parking light were on. after a few more attempts to get the car moving i decided to shut it off for a few minutes and try again. this time around the engine would not start. (3) i had the car towed by aaa to the nearest nissan dealer. they fixed (replaced?) the alternator and i was able to pick it up again that evening.

The brake and battery warning lights came on while driving about 35 mph. i was able to drive about 15 more miles before the car appeared to stall. after pulling to the side of the road, i determined that i was still able to drive the car, albeit at a maximum of 5 mph. luckily, i was only five blocks from home at the time and was able to safely drive the car and park it in front of my house. i called a tow truck and had the car towed to the dealership. the technicians determined that the alternator needed to be replaced. the alternator was replaced free of charge as the car was still under warranty with only 6500 miles.

Alternator failed while driving on the highway. luckily i was in bumper to bumper traffic so the speed was only about 10 mph but i think that had i been going 65 that the potential for an accident etc. would be very likely. you lose all ability to accelerate, imagine pulling off onto a street with a failure like this and a car coming in the other direction? steering is slighly compromised as well. again, i was lucky and coasted to the side of the road, someone else may not be as lucky.*ak pe04077_cat

My family and i were driving our vehicle and were at a light. our vehicle shook very hard when i applied the gas. car would not go more than 5 miles and hour. we were on our way to the highway when it happened. took the car home. had it towed to dealership. they discovered that the transmission fluid had leaked out of the car. we were given three reasons for the problem. reason 1: o ring on hose broke (covered under warranty) reason 2: dealer called back with a second reason. they said acid leaked from the bottom of the battery onto the transmission. (not under warranty) reason 3: when we picked up the car we were told that the battery was leaking from the top because the battery was overcharging itself. we were told that another murano had experienced the exact same problem (battery leaking acid to transmission). since it happened to our car and another we questioned the safety not to mention how does a battery overcharge itself. sounds like something is causing the car to do this. talked to dealers consumer people. basically told us that it can't be disputed if car was fixed. even though dealer confirmed happen to our vehicle and another (one has to wonder if it happened to another). family and i thought it was important to report if nothing else to help track if this truly is a design issue. *tr

After 64 days at dealership to replace faulty air bags i retrieved my car today. i drove approx 1/8 mile to the gas station on the opposite side of the street from nissan, pulled into the gas station, turned off the ignition, gas attendant filled gas tank....then i turned the key and the car would not start. check svc engine, airbag, seat belt lights all illuminated, but engine would not turn over. i called back to the dealership. annoyed because i have been without my vehicle for 60 some odd days, and the very day i get it back this happened. the finale was when the service manager said he would send a tow truck, and hung up on me, after i asked how was i suppose to travel from point a to point b. i called back, another manager came over in a car with a mechanical gave me a jump start which allowed me to follow them back to the dealership where they said my battery was no good and they replaced it. a no good battery after 2 years and 31,548 miles, umm, seems strange. *nm

On the evening of aug 4, 2004, i was driving home, noticed that the battery and brake light were illuminated on my new (6500 miles) nissan murano. i planned to take it to the local dealer the next day, as soon as i completed two unchangeable appointments. as i started to leave the parking lot on the second appointment, the vehicle would not accelerate. i called the dealer and my husband, who came to get me. the vehicle had to be towed. diagnosis: failed alternator. needless to say, i was not happy. they had to order the part, and the repair was finished on the following tuesday, aug 10. the service manager said he had previously had 4 or so failed alternators, and didn't understand why nissan had not recalled the vehicles. the repair has been fine, the dealership loaned me a vehicle, even though i bought it out of town. then i started to check the internet, and found that there are a lot of alternator failures. i am thankful that mine happed in a local parking lot instead of on the road. *ak

The nissan murano 2004 sl doesn't start the engine periodically. it doesn't happen all the time but when it happens the engine would not start. i've bee left stranded in the middle of nowhere several times already between june 2005 and august 2005. i brought the car for repairs four time already. the following jobs has been performed: 1) electric system checked - nothing found 2) alternator replaced as a part of the re-call 3) keys re-programmed several times 4) today i've been told that they(koeppel nissan at nyc) will try to replace the transponder (if i understand correctly, this is part of the security immobilizer system).- will see if this one works. i personally do think that there is something wrong with the immobilizer system - but nissan refuses to perform the detailed diagnostics...telling me that it could be hundred different reasons why the engine would not start. at this point i am getting sick and tired of this entire process - will file for bbb arbitration and then for the law suit against nissan to recovery my money and compensation for not being able to use the car. *nm
