Defect SummaryNissan is recalling 362,891 my 2003-2007 murano vehicles. the intake air ducts, which are connected to the intermediate resonator in the air intake system of the engine, may separate from the resonator with engine movement. this separation occurs due to the premature aging of the material used in the intake air ducts which causes excessive shrinking.
Consequence SummaryEngine may stall increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect and replace/repair the appropriate components free of charge. the recall began on september 24, 2009. owners may contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

Nissan murano 96 began leaking engine oil, went in to fix under a nissan warranty. leak was not fixed and the power steering began to leak. service manager at dealership, autobarn nissan, don mekoola told me these engines begin leaking at this point and the dealership would not even offer enough on a trade to wholesale the murano. that tells you all you need to know. nissan usa will do nothing and the dealer will do nothing. i had no idea the car was this bad a shape and continued driving it. now i follow don's advice and top off both engine oil and power steering fluid every week. not the best answer, but i have no choice. *tr

I own a 2004 nissan murano and have had troubles with vehicle hesitation . it is most present when in stop and go traffic and the engine is warm. after about 20 minutes of stop and go, the gas pedal doesn't respond for a few seconds and the vehicle suddenly jerks forward aggressively presenting a very dangerous situation.
02/09/2011100000
The car was driven on the high way at 50 mph, when it started to decelerate and would only go over a max speed of 30 mph. even with acceleration, the car would not go over 30 mph. it was driven to the auto repair shop and they declared the transmission had failed and the engine was faulty as well. this car has given us so many problems. this is the third time it had stalled on the highway almost causing accidents and presenting a dangerous situation for my family! this problem needs to be corrected!!!!!!!!! something must be done!

My family and i were driving our vehicle and were at a light. our vehicle shook very hard when i applied the gas. car would not go more than 5 miles and hour. we were on our way to the highway when it happened. took the car home. had it towed to dealership. they discovered that the transmission fluid had leaked out of the car. we were given three reasons for the problem. reason 1: o ring on hose broke (covered under warranty) reason 2: dealer called back with a second reason. they said acid leaked from the bottom of the battery onto the transmission. (not under warranty) reason 3: when we picked up the car we were told that the battery was leaking from the top because the battery was overcharging itself. we were told that another murano had experienced the exact same problem (battery leaking acid to transmission). since it happened to our car and another we questioned the safety not to mention how does a battery overcharge itself. sounds like something is causing the car to do this. talked to dealers consumer people. basically told us that it can't be disputed if car was fixed. even though dealer confirmed happen to our vehicle and another (one has to wonder if it happened to another). family and i thought it was important to report if nothing else to help track if this truly is a design issue. *tr

My wife and i noticed that the heater blower was only blowing cold air when turned to high. also, the temperature gauge was showing anywhere from extremely hot to very hot. upon inspection of the coolant level reservoir it was showing full. however, the radiator was empty and took 3/4 bottle of coolant to refill. then i noticed that there was a puddle of coolant that had formed on top of a bolt. we also could hear a noise from engine compartment. upon investigation noticed idle pulley was vibrating and make the sound. i investigated online at www.nissanmurano.org for similar problems. i found a series of reports that the bracket that holds the idle pulley was broken. i had the dealership inspect the vehicle and it looked to them like the pulley bracket was broken. upon examination of how the bracket broke seem that the bracket is under-designed. the crack seems to indicate that the bracket broke by bending fatigue. this idle pulley tensioner had then severed the coolant hose. the failure to this idle pulley could lead to an alternator not providing energy to the car and even more serious consequences. *tr

Alternator adjusting bracket - jan 29, 2007 today, i had to have my 2004 nissan murano serviced due to a coolant leak that i noticed. when looking at the vehicle, entire underbody was filled with coolant and no coolant remained in the resevoir. the dealer serviced the vehicle and documented the issue as the alternator adjusting bracket having broken and rupturing the hose, fan pulley and the power steering belt being negatively impacted. after speaking with the service tech., there have been multiple times that he has seen this issue. with an obvious repeating issue in the vehicles, the severity of damage to the vehicle (bracket breaks, alternator loosens in hood and damages surrounding mechanisms, or occupants (operation of vehicle not ideal with bracket broken, impacting surrounding mechanisms (power steering belt, fan, alternator, coolant system) that could result, and the customer dissatisfaction of having this issue and incurring the costs to repair. *jb

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - COOLING SYSTEM

Said vehicle stopped while leaving a light and entering i 395 in urban area with an oncoming tractor trailer coming swiftly behind me. the reason the vehicle stopped is because the air vac hose continually comes lose from regular use of a nissan murano 2004. this is the fifth time that the vehicle has stopped in the middle of traffic. last year, the vehicle stopped going up a mountain in wv around a curve on a two-lane highway. the only reason that my daughter and i did not get hit and/or killed (due to location) was because of the assistance of an oncoming vehicle that was prepared with cones and information. today, i almost got slammed into by a trailor. i had to get out of vehicle and wave arms to get him to stop. i am so angry, not only because this continues to happen, but because i have a six year old child who has been screaming out of fear during two of the incidents where the vehicle stopped. i called to file a complaint with nissan motor acceptance corporation. they have done nothing and said that there was no recall which i cannot understand. please help! something has to be done about this public safety hazard before someone gets killed. *tr

Heard rattle on acceleration about a month before major problem; thought it was something in the car. noise eventually went away. started with noise again. lasted two days. noticed just as i turned into work parking lot that front windshield began to fog up at bottom. no amount of defrosting or opening windows would clear the windshield until it became almost too fogged to drive. then car stalled out. brake and battery lights came on. could start it again, but didn't last long. had to have car towed to dealer. dealer determined steel tensioner bracket and pulley broke cutting drive belt. dealer indicated not warranted under wrap coverage. noticed in nhtsa list of complaints several similar occurrences with these parts. this appears to be a design flaw that the nissan company should take responsibility for. it was a $400+ repair. car has 46,000 miles on it. *tr

Events leading to failure: replacement of alternator due to product recall failure: coolant hose location: where coolant hose touches outside edge of idler pulley adjustment nut. what was done: vehicle will be taken to dealership for repair. assumption of failure: vehicle was recalled to replace alternator. when serpentine belt was tightened, coolant hose weakening occurred. visual observation: coolant hose is pressed against adjustment nut depressing it 1/16-3/32 of an inch. this combined with vehicle engine natural vibrations a hole in the coolant hose occurred. result of coolant loss: ultimately, engine failure could occur resulting in loss of vehicle control resulting in serious injury or death due to loss of coolant from failed hose. possible solution: nissan will repair or replace idler pulley adjustment bracket and insure proper adjustment space between the idler pulley adjustment nut and coolant hose. *jb

I own a 2004 nissan murano sl and have had troubles with vehicle hesitation for quite some time now. it seems to be most present when in stop and go traffic and the engine is warm. after approximately 10mins of stop and go, the gas pedal does not respond for a few seconds and the vehicle suddenly lunges forward aggressively presenting a very dangerous situation. the dealership does not know what is causing this but numerous reports on the internet point to a valve body malfunction.

Uses oil!! i heard a rattle or a chattering noise form the engine on light acceleration. checked engine oil it was low. put about 1-1.5qts in. fixed problem. next oil change about 1500-2000 miles into the oil change heard same thing. again low oil repeated last process. changed oil and again about 1500-2000 miles into the oil change same problem. there isn't a leak one any wear out side the engine must be leaking past the rings and into the cylinders and being burnt. if not caught in time will eventually lead to engine failure which means no power steering no power brakes, caught in traffic, or out in the middle of no wear.

Twice in the last two weeks my 2004 nissan murano has had a complete computer failure, resulting in loss of both steering and brakes. the computer failure only occurs when turning the car on. turning the car off and on again appears to reset the computer. i have taken the car to the nissan dealership and have been told that because the problem did not occur in their presence, there was nothing they could do about it therefore there was no repair or replacement of any parts. because there is no specific event which leads to this problem, i am left to drive a car with a serious malfunction which may in turn cause an accident resulting in bodily injury to myself or others. *nm

Dt: the contact stated while driving 30 mph, the vehicle lost power. it was muscled home from the scene of the incident and towed to the dealer. the dealer determined the cause of the vehicle's lost of power was due to internal failure of the throttle chamber assembly. to repair the vehicle the thottle chamber assembly was replaced. right before the incident, the vehicle's check engine light illuminated.

Steel tensioner bracket that held the idle arm assembly in place broke in half and nissan would not do anything about the problem. their claim is that it was no longer under warranty. my complaint is that it is not a warranty issue but a defective part that could become a safety issue. obviously the part should never fail for the entire life of the vehicle as it was a steel support bracket . when the part failed it also did consequences damage as well. this falls under a safety issue as well. *jb

Idler pulley and bracket design default. i just took my car in after an all of the sudden clanging noise - at 35,000 miles. i was told by authorized dealership that i required a new idler pulley and bracket. apparently it was broken. i believe this is a design default and should be looked into. i have heard many people complaining of this same thing. i ended up paying $99 for labor, $69.50 for the pulley, and $25 for the bracket. this part failing at 35,000 miles is unacceptable. *tr
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - EXHAUST SYSTEM
08/15/2011115000
My 2004 nissan murano se just recently passed 115,000 miles. i have been noticing a lack of power, some odd/various noises and just recently saw a puff of smoke out of the exhaust. shortly after, the service engine soon light came on and i had the code verified at advance auto. catalytic system failure on one of the banks. this type of failure is extremely common with nissan vehicles utilizing the vq engine and typically results in backflow of catalyst material into the engine which in turn causes catastrophic failure to the pistons and piston rings. replacement of the catalytic converters is highly difficult and generally costs around $2,500 at a dealer. parts alone will cost in excess of $600 for aftermarket and $1,600 for oem. this issue generally happens between 80k and 120k miles on almost every altima, maxima and murano and there are multiple forums in which various owners discuss this matter in grave detail. it is not a matter of if this will happen to these vehicles, it is a matter of when. i purchased this vehicle 1.5 years ago and still owe mutltiple thousands of dollars on it. this is ridiculous...
05/13/2011
They are telling me i have to replace my catalyt converter, because it is a government requirement. this is costing 3300.00. looking online, some cars, there was a recall on this part why wasn't there one on this car if it is having to be replaced? 2004 nissan murano. i can not afford something like this, and a family with my income can not. i am a single mother with two kids. please let me know what i can do.

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan murano. the contact stated that her vehicle made a cranking noise and exhaust fumes exited the tailpipe. the nissan dealer diagnosed the failure as engine sludge. before taking the vehicle to nissan, a mechanic advised her to take it to a dealer because the engine was still under warranty. nissan of north america denied the contact's claim and would not repair the vehicle under warranty. the purchase date and powertrain were unknown. the current mileage was 45,360 and failure mileage was 45,154.
