PE08065NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.11/18/200807/02/2009DRIVER SEAT ANCHOR FAILURE
This investigation concerns structural failure of the anchor/bracket on the left rear side of the driver's seat.the concern is that such failures may alter the driver's seated position so as to reduce effectiveness of the occupant protection system or potentially compromise vehicle control.failure of the subject anchor bracket results from metal fatigue and causes rearward tilting of the driver's seat.these failures usually occur during driver ingress but may also occur while the vehicle is being operated.the safety related concerns during actual vehicle use were not validated by this investigation.while the number of complaints of this problem is relatively high, only three very minor, undocumented injuries were reported.the reported injuries occurred during driver ingress, not while the vehicle was in motion.investigation disclosed that the apparent risk of compromise to vehicle control has not been demonstrated.investigation also disclosed that the apparent risk of collapse of the driver's seat back has not been demonstrateda safety related defect trend was not identified and this investigation has been closed.

Driver seat has skipped and/or broken off the left track causing the seat to rock dangerously. this is a common problem in this vehicle i've seen and should be a recall item fixed by nissan for the faulty seat track mechanism. this is clearly an extremely dangerous condition. fortunately, i have been able to temporarily re-seat onto the track with the following method - by raising the seat to it's highest level and moving it back to it's farthest point then dropping the seat to it's lowest level and slowly moving the seat forward. this seems to regain the track but has only been a temporary solution as it ultimately skips off track repeatedly and fixes the seat to it's lowest position which might not be suitable for many short drivers. <-- i hope this temporary remedy helps others who may be driving dangerously in this vehicle. a $1000 repair was quoted by my nissan dealer, however, i am going to continue the temporary re-alignment described above and when that ultimately completely fails, i have no idea what to do except hope nissan finally owns up to this obvious design flaw and fixes it. *tr

While driving on road i was waiting at green light waiting to turn left. as i began to make the left hand turn across oncoming traffic my seat lifted several inches off the vehicle floor. my body felt as if i had been forcefully lifted and pushed simultaneously. this required me to pull the steering wheel to the right, the opposite direction i was turning, in order to regain control of my own body. this was hazardous to oncoming traffic and. myself as i nearly had been t-boned by the oncoming tractor trailer and nearly ran off the road, down, a 5 foot ditch, and through a fence. it was a terrifying experience. i've never experienced or have heard of a seat breaking. i am not overweight nor have been from the time i have owned the vehicle, 6 years. its baffling as to why a drivers seat would malfunction in such a manner. i immediately researched my problem and found this was previously investigated by the nhtsa and closed for the reason of not having posed a safety issue due to no documented occurrences while driving. well here's your documented occurrence that nearly caused a family of four their lives. it's absurd the number of complaints on the formentioned issue and there isn't a recall. my vehicle won't pass inspection with my seat in this condition yet nhtsa deems this as a safe condition in which to operate vehicle... i'm baffled how this is classified as safe to drive... it's not. *tr

The driver's seat rocks back and forth because the bracket that holds the seat to the base has broken.this seems to be a rather common occurrence with this model.this is a very unsafe condition because the seat is no longer solidly affixed to the floor.this is a major design flaw, and should be addressed by nissan.the replacement part to remedy this is almost $500.00 and that does not include the labor. *tr

The driver seat is moving left when turning left, and when moving the seat forward, only the left side is moving causing the seat to tilt left. when check at the dealer shop, it appear the link is broken and the right side motor is defective. the dealer admit that the problem occur in many murano 2003-2005,but sad that my extended warranty expired . please investigate about this problem in the nissan murano 2003-2004. it did happen in many of them. *tr

The driver's seat has become detached from the floor frame on one side. the electric mechanism to move the seat still works, but the whole seat appears loose. at first it felt like only a loose bolt, and we had taken it repeatedly to a dealer. i was recently told the entire seat may have to be replaced, as there was now a 'break' in the welding of the seat to the seat frame on the floor. this was not casued by any action of the owners nor due to prior accident. it appears this has been a recurrent problem for these murano's, as i have seen consumer web sites reporting this based on other owner's complaints, which is why i decided to report it as well. i was glad to find out about the repetitive nature of this problem with other owners (i conducted my own internet search) or i may never have reported this. i am concerned this is a safety issue if the car is in an accident. it will need to be fixed now, but i understand nissan has replaced some of them for other owners and i am exploring this option. note - mileage and date entries above are just estimates. i could only find one old repair invoice with this issue mentioned although i had asked them to check it many times. perhaps the dealer knew this was a problem and chose not to put it on the work order. i'm afraid i have also learned a lesson to make sure everything they check is entered on the work order, and to read my work orders more closely, especially with dealers who have vested interest related to recalls.

Driver left seat had a structural failure on its bracket that results from metal fatigue. this failure caused rearward tilting of the driver's seat while the vehicle was operated and potentially compromise vehicle control.

Seat mounting bracket broke . makes seat tilt to left while driving . no recalls even tho this a common occurance on this model . just shows nissan desire to stand behind product .......

Driver side seat moves while driving causing a huge safety concern for me and my family. the back left seat bracket is broken due to a weak metal part.

The drivers seat electrical slide failed. it locked up and then broke loose. it will no longer operate and is in a fixed position on one track. the other track is moving freely and will not lock. the plastic gears stripped and broke.

Driver side power seat track assembly of my nissan murano 2004 stopped working while driving. the seat is now disabled and locked in place. there are tilting movements at times along with noise sounding as if it may potentially come loose and dislodge itself rendering dangerous driving condition. dealership has stated over $1200 for the part and installation (out of warranty). the problem appears to be a common issue with all murano year models.

I have the same issue with my driver's seat breaking due to the thin metal used in the seat assembly described here: nhtsa action number: pe08065 the left rear of the seat collapsed and now the seat rocks back and forth while driving. http://www.aboutautomobile.com/investigation/2004/nissan/murano/seat

We have had another issue concerning our 2004 nissan murano. this time it is the driver seat that has broken. the nissan dealers know of this issue and have not offered any help other than wanting to charge $1000.00 for the seat frame assembly. a seat that has broken! a very integral part of the car that should be strong and free from defects. it would be justice if someone could make this company own up to the terrible craftmanship that this vehicle was constructed with.

The weld on the drivers seat frame is fractured. it is a major safety issue and nissan has changed the part from what is originally in the vehicle, although nissan won't admit to a change.
08/28/2011136000
The front drivers seat cannot be moved forward or backward. the right side of the seat appears to be stuck in place. the inability to adjust the seat impacts a drivers ability to position the seat for safe driving i.e. pedal distance, steering distance, side view mirror viewing etc.... this appears to be a known problem. there are several websites where owners discuss their experience one such website is http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f14ec7a (this is an edmunds.com blog), a second blog site where owners report this safety issue is http://www.nissanmurano.org/forums/66-problems/10406-more-drivers-seat-problems.html. this is nisssan web site. a third set of complaints can be found at http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2005/nissan/murano/seat. this is clearly a problem which may cause an accident.

The power seat motor on my 2004 nissan murano se has failed. it will not move forward or backwards. in addition, the wheel hub bearing failed/broke and also had to be replaced at a very expensive cost. prior to this, the differential also failed/leaked and had to be replaced/fixed. this vehicle has only 100,000 miles and has endured a ongoing series of repairs for numerous factory installed defects. the nissan, murano is not a safe, reliable vehicle to own.

I have a 2004 nissan murano with a broken drivers seat. the left side of the driver seat support frame has fatigued and broken. several repair shops in my area have indicated that they will not try to repair because the guage of the metal support is too thin. new seat bases, which are hard to find, can cost $1000 for the part. my internet search has revealed this to be a common problem. need help on this! tom battles 1022 pleasant street southington, ct 06489 860-620-0311

2004 nissan murano, drivers seat spontaneously broke, seat is now leaning against the door frame. seat no longer functions properly. seat rocks from side to side in stopping. afraid of further failure in seat that could result in the driver seat coming completely disengaged which would put driver and passengers at serious risk. independent mechanic acknowledges seat failure in muranos is common.

I own a 2004 nissan murano and the driver seat has broken within the last 2 months. it rocks side to side and front to back when applying the brakes. i took it to a mechanic and paid to have it welded but it did not hold. this is dangerous as if it breaks while driving, this structure failure to the driver seat could cause a fatality. this is a common problem with this vehicle.

Tl- the contact owns a 2004 nissan murano. while attempting to adjust the driver side front seat the contact noticed that the seat would not mechanically move forward, however all of the additional movable positions do operate normally. the vehicle has not been diagnosed and there were no prior warnings. the current mileage was 89000 and the failure mileage was 88000. bml

I was taking a left hand turn when i heard something snap and my driver's side seat fell back to the left. my foot came off the gas pedal when the seat fell back. i've read all of the complaints and i find it hard to believe that this is not considered a safety issue. i could have easily lost control of the car or come to an abrupt stop from my foot coming off the gas if i were traveling at a faster rate of speed. i just returned from the nissan dealer. they had to completely replace the seat lift frame assembly for a discounted cost of $1135.80 which i paid. i could not drive the car in this condition (the seat was not stable and wobbling every time i took a turn or hit a bump) so i felt i had not choice but to repair it. from the invoice i think the part # is 87450-ca68b and then below that it says mh7826.

The driver seat became unstable and would adjust without using controls. seat just broke (the frame) and almost caused us to crash due to displacement and listing to the left. very scary. just found out this is a common issue and that it will be nearly $1000 to repair.

Drivers seat tilts on turns, worse on left turns. i took it to the dealer and they said it was a broken seat track. i asked them to repair and was told the area manager refused to fix. there is a technical service bulletin on this and it is beyond dangerous. the left front of the seat barely hangs on as the bolts are broken in the back. i have done some research on this and it is a prevalent problem with this car. i am complaining as i feel it is extremely unsafe. *tr

Tl* the contact has a 2004 nissan murano. the contact automatic seat adjustment is not working. the seat is now starting to sway back and forth while the contact is driving. the contact states that a dealer stated that it is because the rail bar is broken. the failure mileage was 80000 and the current mileage was 90000.

I have a 2004 nissan murano with electric driver seat. the left rear bracket holding the seat to the rail has broken, thus resulting in the seat becoming detached and severely leaning to the left rear. i assumed this was an isolated incident until i googled the issue and have discovered numerous complaints of this exact same issue. this problem could prove to be a serious safety issue in the event of a crash or hard brake. to say the least, it could prove to cause back injury or pain. *tr

Nissan murano 2004- front drivers seat is loose and wiggly for the last week. last night it was extremely cold and the seat seemed to collapse on the door side leaving it crooked it feels awkward to drive, worried that the seat will come off or something. i just contacted nissan and am waiting for a response. this car was a gift from my dad in florida and i only have owned it for about a year, so i doubt rust is an issue. right now i am unable to pay for a expensive repair due to high winter bills and x-mas. any help will be appreciated. thank you. *tr

2004 nissan murano, normal usage of the driver seat, noticed seat rocking 9 months after i bought it certified used, took it to the nissan dealer, was told it was a broken seat bracket, cost to repair $948 + tax. the complaints on this issue with other owners is endless! this is a major design flaw, a seat should never break like this under normal wear, and should be recalled by nissan after so many documented complaints. *tr

 1. normal usage of the driver seat to a 2004 nissan murano. 2. the seats metal frame broke on the left hand side where it looks to be a design flaw. the bracket is thinner on the left side where it broke. 3. has not been replaced due to not being covered and not having the $1,000.00. i currently am driving around with a large plastic lunchbox under my seat, but i fear that i have a personal ejection seat if i were to be in an accident. *tr

I have a 2004 nissan murano. while driving the car the drivers seat suddenly collapsed to the left. luckily i was on a side street going slow and was able to keep control of the car. i had a mechanic look at it and the anchor bracket under the seat has broken off the hinge. the cost of repair will be approx. $1000.00! it is not a warranty part. after investigating there have been many complaints from other murano owners with the same problem. in addition your website states it was investigated and closed. how can this not be a safety issue, if i was on the parkway driving 55 mph and my seat collapsed i do not know what could of happened. do we have to wait till someone is killed before this is investigated better and taken care of! i do not see any other records of drivers seats breaking like this in cars that are 4-5 years old. *tr

My 2004 nissan murano driver's seat has a broken frame. it leans to the left and back. it rests against the post between the front seat and back seat. it traps the seat belt between the post and the seat. i have to struggle to put the seatbelt on every time i get into the car. i took my car to wright's nissan in wexford,pa, the mechanic there told me that i would need to get it fixed in order to pass inspection. they wanted to charge me $850.00 for a new seat. i was able to contact a private welder and he said he would fix it for a fee alot smaller than the $850.00 nissan wants to charge me. i believe nissan should recall this defect before someone gets seriously hurt or killed. *tr

I bought a new 2004 nissan murano sl awd from the dealership. by october 2004, i had to get the front drivers seat replaced because it was loose and rocked back and forth. now in june 2009, the problem has recurred but much more severely, and since i am now out of warranty, the dealer wants $1100 to replace it. there are two service bulletins from nissan on this: ntb03-095 and ntb05-043c. nissan even changed the part number indicating or suggesting a design/manufacturing issue/defect. either way, this is definitely a safety issue and i am gravely concerned for my safety in the event of a collision. this pertains to nhtsa investigation pe08065. thank you! *tr

2004 nissan murano driver's seat is broken from frame. seat tilts to the rear- left and rocks up and down when sitting or putting weight on seat. electrical functions of the seat (up/down and back and forth) are working. concerned with safety issue not having the seat properly secured. seems too much movement (rocking) could be a danger if in a collision - unsure if the seat and seat belt mechanism will work properly if in a crash. will be taking the vehicle to nissan dealer for repair. don't know replacement costs. *tr

This is the second defect that i have had with this car and a lot of nissan murano owners have had it as well. the problem is with the seat rocking and sliding. it seems that these seats were not made right or have had poor craftsmanship. this is very dangerous being the fact that in an accident the driver could fly out the windshield due to the negligence to properly fix this problem.....this can cause major injuries or even death................ *tr
08/10/2008800001
Regular driving, 2004 nissan murano se, noticed one day the drivers seat started making a creaking noise. i didn't pay much attention till one day while cleaning the interior, i pushed against the seat and it moved back and down towards the drivers rear left. i researched the issue on murano.org, and found out it was a broken seat frame. i also had mossy nissan check it out and they also told me it was a broken seat frame. due to the cost of the repair, and the likely hood of it recurring, i did not fix the seat through nissan. *tr

On our 2004 nissan murano the power drivers seat will no longer adjust front to back. it will twist with the outside moving but inside not moving. this is a safety problem because the seat is stuck almost all way back and the only way that my wife can drive is to put a large pillow behind her. checking on line there appears to be design and or manufacturing problems with the murano drivers seats. i have contacted tony holland, service director at crown nissan in greensboro, nc and he advised that per the nissan area rep because of age and mileage nissan will not make a good will repair. to get the required part you must buy the whole seat track for $796.62 which is crazy. total cost would be $1,118.67 plus tax. on line there seams to be two issues one the seat frame breaking and the other a plastic part that drives the ball screw breaking. nissan will not check the problem until you authorize the purchase of the seat track. this an accident waiting to happen. i urge you to issue a mandatory recall to make nissan take responsibility to fix their error like a responsible company would do. *tr

While driving (at 65 mph!) the left rear anchor bracket of the drivers seat suddenly broke causing the seat to collapse and become unstable. i was lucky to be able to remain in control of the car and avoid an accident. as a result of this broken bracket, my seat rocks severely when i turn corners and sometimes when i apply the brakes. this is a serious safety concern and a recall should be issued. i have not had the car repaired as of yet but i do find by researching that this issue is quite common (service bulletins have been issued by nissan and you) and the repair costly. until i hear from you, i will fix for the time being by installing some wooden blocks under my seat to stabilize it. again, i urge you to issue a recall on this very serious safety issue. *tr

My 2003 murano drivers seat frame cracked at the left front support while driving. there is only normal usage of the seat under normal driving conditions. i took my car to the dealer as i thought it may just be a bolt that was loose or something and was told the whole seat frame would need to be replaced to fix the issue. this is a serious safety hazard as the seat rocks forward whenever braking in the vehicle. had it broken under strain from breaking to avoid an accident i could have lost control of the car. what's the use in being buckled in if your seat is not securely fastened to the car. *tr

I have a 2004 se nissan murano and the driver seat has broken. i was driving my murano while coming to a turn and heard a loud snap sound while immediately my driver seat went left against the driver door making it hard to control the wheel. i could have had a wreck trying to brace and control my balance of the car. i am 179 pounds and weight could not have played a factor in this seat defect do to reading many, many complaints about this same issue happening to nissan murano owners. the metal assembly bracket has broken i later discovered. i have contacted nissan and it is not under warranty and to have repair is estimated at 1,000 dollars. this is outrageous!!! there needs to be a recall on this part by identifying it as a safety hazard and could cost someone their life !!!!!!!!!!! *tr

While driving this morning, i made a right turn @ about 5mph out of the traffic light (driving conditions were dry road, slow speed and daylight), when i noticed a snap sound from underneath my 42,200miles 2004 nissan murano sl driver's seat and felt as if the seat came loose from the seat railing bottom. instantly i fell backwards and towards the left side of the seat almost loosing control of the wheel and pulling my lower back muscle trying to get my self up. pulled over to check the seat, and noticed the seat was loose, hardly made any force to move or wiggle it back & forth or side to side. immediately noticed a loose bar or piece of metal. went to my usual nissan service center to find out about the problem/broken part and found out the broken part is the back crossbar of the seat lifter link slide assembly. it actually detached from the welding on the left side of the seat. my vehicle is not covered by any warranty as it expired about a year or so and the service center will not replace with out a cost and a new assembly. it will sell the whole assembly though, which i do not intend on paying since i believe this is a design/manufacturing failure and needless to say a safety issue. i found out nissan motors knows about this problems with the murano's drivers seat and have not done anything, and they should. even nissan came up with a reinforced/ different part number seat assembly, also i know for a fact that many murano owners have filled complaints both with nissan & the nhtsa and nothing has come up or done. i was lucky i didn't crash or sustained any damages other than a sprained lower back, an unsafe seat and an undriveable car in the meantime. believe me, it could have been worst a lot worst. for the record, i complained to nissan about a year ago about a back & forth rocking motion on the same seat and found nothing but a loose nut. something have to be done before someone do get really hurt or killed. please help us. *tr

The driver seat in my 2004 nissan murano broke. the motor is still working but the right side of the cable is broken so it doesn't slide forward. this is a major security issue and it costs over $1000 to repair it. i have read many other muranos with similar complaints so this must be a manufacture defect. *tr

Failure of the power seat drive. driver's seat seemed to be lopsided, high on the left side of it. now i have to drive with seat severely askew to the right and seat could not be properly adjusted. repair will cost about $850 plus tax. all for the sake of a poorly designed, overworked small plastic gear. *tr

I own a 2004 nissan murano, and today after only owning the car for less than a year, the driver seat (automatic) broke and is leaning to the left. i am covered under an extended warranty and this problem will be covered by nissan, but to those many owners of this vehicle that this has happened too, i feel obligated to report this issue. i feel this is a driving hazard and could cause a serious accident or even death. when the seat broke, i was in moving traffic of around 45 miles an hour, and i almost swerved to the left and hit a car. this is a parts issue that nissan should cover. i think it would be unjust to allow nissan to not recall this item and repair this item for free. i weigh less than 185, so i doubt this problem was due to weight issues. it's a defective parts issue. please contact nissan to get this corrected. *tr

I have a 2004 nissan muruno and the passenger seat started making a clicking sound everytime i would turn, but at that time i did not know what it was. then a few weeks later the i was driving and made had to stop abruptly and the seat broke. then my seat was leaning to the side. when i took it to the dealership in raleigh, nc on wake forest road. i was told that i would have to buy a brand new chair. which i think that they quoted me $800.00 then that was not including labor. that was almost 2 years ago. i am still riding with my seat leaning to the side. *tr

I have a 2004 nissan murano. the power drivers seat will only move on the left side and the right side is stuck. upon taking it to the dealer, i was informed the gear on the right side was stripped, and it would be $1,000 + to fix this. i had the vehicle in multiple times under warranty for the seat slipping when i took-off from a stop sign, and was told it was operating as designed. i am concerned that in an accident this seat is not going to remain in place and it will result in major injuries. *tr

I have a 2004 nissan murano which my wife and i love, but we have recently developed a problem that we haven't experienced before. the left side of the power drivers seat broke and the ride is very dangerous and unstable. i can only imagine what i will face if i ever have to suddenly stop my car. i'm currently searching for someone local that can weld the seat back to its base, but cost is a factor and so is time. it seems that this is a manufacture defect, and perhaps there should be some sort of recall to correct this issue before someone gets hurt and has to sue nissan. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 nissan murano. each time the vehicle is driven, the driver seat moves from right to left and front to back. the failure was noticed while driving 55 mph. the vehicle was taken to the dealer twice and they stated that the frame of the seat failed. there is a service bulletin regarding this failure; however, the number was unknown. the current mileage was 82,000 and failure mileage was 81,500.
