Defect SummaryNissan is recalling 204,361 my 2007-2008 altima, altima hybrid, 350z, 350z roadster, my 2008 altima coupe, rogue, my 2009 murano, and infiniti my 2007-2008 g35 sedan, my 2008 g37 coupe and ex35 passenger vehicles equipped with continental automotive systems' occupant classification system (ocs) control units. a varistor in the ocs control unit located in the passenger seat cushion may have been manufactured out of specification. under certain conditions, this could cause an interruption of signal between the ocs and the air bag control unit (acu).
Consequence SummaryThis could result in the passenger air bag being suppressed which could fail to provide adequate protection in the event of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will test the signal between the ocs and acu systems using a special tool to check that it is functioning as designed. if necessary, the seat cushion (containing ocs hardware) will be replaced with a new one manufactured to specification. the recall began on november 4, 2008. owners may contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261 or infiniti at 1-800-662-6200.
NotesCustomers may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov.

Liftgate will not open from outside, regardless of method used. the driver's button, the fob, and the button on the liftgate do nothing. in the event of an emergency, the liftgate cannot be used as a means of entry or exit of the vehicle. *tr

At about 65,000 miles the driver door lock actuator quit working. all 4 door lock actuators actuators quit working shortly after. this is a safety issue because my child's door could be opened now since they no longer will lock automatically. i am afraid to manually lock the doors in the case of an car accident in which we were incapable of getting out of the car to save him, then emergency personnel could easily open doors if actuators worked. the unlock buttons will not work. also, my wife travels through dangerous neighborhoods in which she should be able to lock all doors without pulling off the road. the lock buttons will not work. please help!

The vehicle cvt becomes unstable. vehicle unexpectedly loses power at times. got off highway ramp and came to a normal stop. stepped on accelerator to move into traffic. vehicle hesitated and crawled slowely into traffic for 5 to 10 seconds before surging forward with accelerator to the floor. nearly t-boned on several occasions. have gone through 4 transmissions so far and the dealership is contemplating another replacement. i have no confidence another transmission will fix the problem since the same dangerous failure mode keeps showing up totally without warning.

The warning light keeps coming on saying the back hatch is open which makes my automatic door locks constantly open and close. i took it to nissan and they say the back hatch latch assembly needs to be replaced. *tr

The keyless remote appears to lock the doors and set the security system. the door handle was pulled allowing entry into the car while it was thought to be locked. the alarm sounds but the car can be accessed when it appears and sounds as if it is properly locked. only the drivers door locks. the door can be opened while in motion from the inside. *tr

Problem with the tilt and telescope of the steering column. when turning on the car, gears seem to be grinding and the automatic feature no longer works. wheel does not return to the pre-set location. also the auto seat feature does not return to the pre-set location. there's a big problem with the electrical system in the 2009 nissan murano. a couple of months ago, it cost me over $500 to get the rear hatch door fixed when all of a sudden it locked shut. of course, there's no way to unlock this manually from inside the vehicle and this could be a potential safety hazard. *tr

10 minutes after vehicle was parked, with doors locked and windows rolled up, my wife was alerted by a passerby that her car was on fire. fire started in the forward passenger compartment and spread thru the passenger compartment very rapidly. vehicle was a total loss. vehicle had no aftermarket work and had not been involved in any accidents. all service work was performed by a certified nissan dealer on schedule.progressive insurance investigated and found owner not to be at fault (claim #11114682 was paid). i have requested nissans internal investigation root cause analysis report to determine cause of fire, but they will not release the information to me. i feel they have something to hide . nissan poc trish page 615 725 7052 she would not pass me up the chain at nissan so that i could speak to someone other than her. concern is there maybe other incidences of nissan murano fires that are not being reported. i was lucky that the fire occurred outside the home and not in the garage at my house where it is always parked.

Alternator went out and sent vehicle into fail safe mode and stopped the vehicle. my wife was coming on from work and it put her in the middle of a bad neghborhood. this is the same thing with the murano from the 2005 recalls. it is still happening and nissan is doing nothing for the newer vehicles.

Power door locks do not work on two of the doors -- driver's door and right rear passenger door. one door lock stopped working last week; the other door lock stopped working yesterday. rear door cannot be locked to keep our children in -- a safety issue -- and it has to be locked manually. in the event of an accident, i will be unable to unlock the door and allow the children to escape; again, a safety issue.

I was involved in an accident where the other driver failed to yield and we crashed, the airbag deployed and when i came to i heard my son screamiing then i tried to open driver side door and it would not open yhe unlock button did not work either nor did the window. i then tried the passanger side and those did not work either so i then hoped in the back seat and unlatched my son and took the baby out his seat and coveered their faces because of the smoke tried to open the back doors and windows and they did not work either we were trapped in the car and i then tried to kick the windows out however, was not successful it was not until a bystander saw the ricking of the car ans a few men had to break the windows out with a crow bar and a hammer..should this have happened the car is a 2009 nissan murano why did the electrical system fail

Car would not restart. entire electrical system shuts down. car towed to dealer and they couldn't find any issue. has happened four more times. found that the issue is related to the brake pedal interlock which shuts down the electrical system. *tr

Service engine soon light goes on and off depending on whether or not i've filled the car with gas or opened/closed the lift gate. i've taken it in to nissan and they can reset it but that's about it. it eventually goes out again. i was told to take the fuel cap off and then place it back on and then if that didn't make it go out then open and close the lift gate. *tr

I recently had the opportunity to drive a 2009 nissan murano equipped with their smart key. similarly, i also drove a 2007 lexus gs with a smart key. i have found that both vehicles can be shut off and exited with while it is inadvertently left in the park transmission position. although a barely audible chime rings, a driver can exit the vehicle and if the vehicle is on an incline, it can roll freely!! i am astounded that there are no neutral safety controls on these new vehicles. standard key ignitions prevent the driver from releasing the key in any position except park ... not so with these new smart key cars! i foresee many accidents occurring unless some correction is made in this option. i don't understand how a government vehicle safety check would overlook this flaw. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 nissan murano. while driving approximately 60 mph at night, on normal road conditions, the exterior headlights shut off without warning. the contact had to make several attempts before the headlights re-activated. the failure recurred three times, but the dealer could not duplicate the failure. the wiper washer and dimmer switch were replaced under the factory service warranty. the failure mileage was 609 and current mileage was 1,350. updated 1/5/09 *cn updated 01/09/09. *jb

The start/stop ignition button on my vehicle if accidentally depressed while the vehicle is in motion completely shuts down the engine and all power equipment. at first i did not realize i accidentally depressed the button while driving, i tested it several times under different circumstances and it shut the vehicle down every time. under all driving conditions but especially highway speeds this manufacturer defect would certainly cause an accident resulting in serious injury or death. i have contacted the dealership where the vehicle was leased on july 15th with no response, i have also called nissan consumer affairs also with no response and i have written a letter of complaint to nissan consumer affairs with a certified copy to the center for auto safety in washington, dc. in the owners manual for my vehicle there is a printed warning not to depress the start/stop ignition button while the vehicle is in motion as it could cause an accident resulting in serious injury. this indicates to me that nissan is aware of the problem but has done nothing to fix it and in my case never explained that this could happen. in speaking to the sales manager at the dealership he admitted he did not know that this would happen while the vehicle was in motion. *tr
