Defect SummaryNissan is recalling certain model year 1996-2004 pathfinder and model year 1997-2003 infiniti qx4 vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, connecticut, delaware, iowa, illinois, indiana, massachusetts, maine, maryland, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, washington d.c., west virginia and wisconsin. in areas of the country in which heavy concentrations of road salt are used, a mixture of snow/water and salt may enter an assembly location hole in the upper strut housing, causing water to collect at the mating surface of the strut housing panel and the inner hood ledge assembly. over time, this snow/water and salt intrusion may result in corrosion of the strut tower housing in some subject vehicles.
Consequence SummaryThe strut housing may crack and pull away from the inner hood ledge assembly. this may lead to grinding noises, increased steering effort, and possibly the steering column to break, resulting in the loss of steering control, which could result in a crash.
Corrective SummaryNissan will inspect the strut housing and repair the vehicles as necessary, free of charge. an interim notification letter to owners will be mailed on or before may 16, 2011. owners may contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261.
NotesOwners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov .

In their defect information report (dir) of april 20, 2011, nissan north america, inc. (nissan) notified nhtsa that it would conduct a safety recall of certain 1996-2004 nissan pathfinder and 1997-2003 infinity qx4 vehicles to repair corrosion damage to the driver's side front strut tower.the vehicles included in the recall are those that were originally sold, or are currently registered in salt belt states including connecticut, delaware, iowa, illinois, indiana, massachusetts, maine, maryland, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia, wisconsin, and the district of columbia.the dir states in part, ...the strut housing may crack and pull away from the inner hood ledge assembly.this could lead to the strut housing panel separating and contacting the steering column lower shaft.contact with the steering column lower shaft can cause steering difficulties and may require an increase in steering effort by the driver.if the steering column lower shaft completely fractured it would result in a total loss of steering control.in some cases, the strut housing panel can contact or affect adjacent brake system components.complainants reported experiencing either steering or brake system issues, and in some cases, both.nissan dealer's will inspect the strut housing and, based on the level of corrosion found, make an assessment as to how to remedy the vehicle (see defect information report for additional details). brake system components adjacent to, and in the area of, the strut tower (i.e., brake master cylinder, left front brake line, abs wire harness, etc.) will also be inspected.

The office of defects investigation has received 35 reports on the subject vehicles alleging a corrosion related failure of the driver's side front strut tower.in 18 of the reports there were allegations that the failures affected the vehicles steering, including five that reported the steering shaft or column broke resulting in a loss of steering.severe corrosion of the frame/body structure in the area of the driver's side front strut tower can allow the strut tower to fail.if the failed strut tower contacts the steering column upper joint, or otherwise restricts the rotation of the steering column shaft, it can result in increased steering effort, steering impediment, or a complete loss of steering control.

My vehicle has two recalls on it - first one is the gas neck recall and the second is the strut housing causing steering problems. i took my vehicle in on may 2nd, 2011 to bergstrom/nissan in oshkosh. they checked out my vehicle and said that my vehicle has the problems regarding both recalls. it is september 8th, 2011 and they still have my vehicle. they called me this morning and told me that they braced up the front. things should be good but that they took it for a drive and it is still all over the road. they also said that the part for the gas neck recall is on back order. they told me to come and pick up the vehicle. if they took it for a drive and it still is all over the road and there is still a problem with the steering - then i don't think it is safe and that they must not have done a good enough job fixing the problem. i don't want to drive an unsafe vehicle until they have corrected the problem.

At highway speeds our 1998 pathfinder begins to sway or shimmy from side to side and requires applying the brakes to stop the swaying. this is after spending $1000 on the front end for struts and other suspension items. this event is worse since we had the work done on the front suspension at the dealership. i have yet to take it back to the dealer. *tr

I have a 1998 pathfinder se 4wd. on a recent trip to colorado, the car began to rock violently from side-to-side whenever we exceeded 70mph, depending on the type of pavement we were driving on. given we had a long drive (over 18 hrs), this was a big problem, and we were constantly fearing that the car would tip over. we had not seen the problem before as we don't do a lot of interstate driving normally. when we got to colorado, we attempted to get the vehicle fixed in a local garage. they replaced shocks, struts, and did an alignment. unfortunately, we couldn't get to the right speed (or perhaps have the right pavement) to reproduce the problem and we thought it was fixed. when we left and got back on the interstate, it started again. the vehicle is at the dealer now and they believe this is a fairly common problem. if so, i don't understand why there hasn't been a recall as this was the most scary thing i've ever had to deal with in a car in my life. *tr

Traveling at about 55 mph in a right hand lane with the cruise control engaged, driver felt something odd in the left front of the vehicle, as if the driver-side front wheel collapsed. this was accompanied by the steering wheel turning sharply to the right and a loud bang under the vehicle in the vicinity of the left front suspension; the driver struggled to keep the vehicle on the road, but it was nonetheless pulled to the right, across the shoulder and into a ditch running paralllel to the road; after dropping into the ditch the vehicle continued to veer to the right and began climbing an embankment; the driver managed to pull the steering wheel hard to the left and point the vehicle back toward the road; as the vehicle moved down the embankment and back into the ditch, the front undercarriage of the vehicle bottomed out where the ditch ended at a driveway , which runs perpendicular to route 50, into a farm; the vehicle bounced back onto the road and crossed the two eastbound lanes; the driver managed to straighten the vehicle out in the center of the grass median and attempted to stop the vehicle; when applying the brakes, it was clear that they were inoperative, the pedal went completely to the floor, and as the driver glanced at the speedometer the vehicle was still traveling about 50 mph, a full quarter mile from where the incident began. then the cruise control was still engaged, and was not being triggered off by application of the brakes. the steering wheel was still pulling hard to the right and the driver continued to struggle to keep the vehicle straight. but know the vehicle was starting to spin counter-clockwise, which caused the vehicle to leave the median area and spin twice ( 720 degrees ) into the oncoming traffic lanes. the vehicle finally stalled and came to rest pointing eastbound in the westbound left lane.

1998 nissan pathfinder 200,000 miles. july 2008. driving on freeway around 60-70 mph, any change in road surface ( ie going over bridge) sends rear of vehicle into severe wobble. acceleration seems to be only way to recover. around large curves ( turnpike in pennsylvania) feels very unstable. all shocks/struts had been replaced in last year except r rear, so upon return from trip had r rear replaced. did not fix problem. mechanic unable to tell what else is causing problem except wide wheel wall of new tires, but these have been on car for 5 months and problem did not occur before this. 4 months later received call from mechanic stating same vehicle different owner in with same problem, but worse, investigated to find tsb (ntb98-001) for rear upper/lower link bars and bushings needing to be replaced. mechanic advised it was a significant safety risk to continue driving vehicle without repair, especially as have teenage driver in family, and should be repaired asap, at cost of $800-$1000. *tr

I have a 1998 nissan pathfinder se and have loved it since the day i got it. until the yesterday when i was driving home from a football game about 110 miles away from home. when i was on the highway doing 65 mph +/- 5 mph, the rear end would start wobbling uncontrollably. it is very dangerous and very unsafe. i did some research online to find the problem ( to save myself money ) and it seems that i am not the only person that has had this problem, nissan themselves have a site that addresses the issue, but no recall has been made. what has to be done for the automotive company to say hey this isn't safe, we should get this fixed for our valued customers i have been driving nissans for 10 years now and have been thoroughly disappointed in the way it seems the manufacturer is handling this. i think this should be recalled so that everyone with a 1996-1998 pathfinder doesn't kill themselves or someone else on the road with the wobbles. *nm

While driving at 60 mph the vehicle began to shimmy from the rear end from side to side. it felt like i would loose control of the vehicle. i regained control by taking my foot off of the gas. the problem came back repeatedly -- at least 20 times during my trip on interstate 80 while bringing my daughter back to college. the proplem was not related to any specifice roas surface condition. it woul happen out of the blue. the road could be flat and smooth. it did not matter. i am sure that i would have lost control of the vehicle if it had happened during the winter and there was snow or even worse ice on the road. since i had just purchased the vehicle used, i took it that afternoon and had a wheel alignment (front and rear) and i had the tires balanced hoping that this would correct the problem. however, on the way home the next day from the college the problem was still there. this is a very dangerous problem and i can only compare it to when you see a car towing a trailer behind it and the trailer begins to sway from side to side. i also understand that this problem happens to many models of the nissan pathfinder covering at least the years 1997, 1998 and 1999 and it is not related to any specific mileage on the vehicle. it could happen at 15,000 miles or 90,000 miles. this is a very serious problem and is caused by a design failure of the bushings (there are 4 of them) that are part of the control arms.*ak

Vehicle leans to left. dealer provide service bulletin that recognized defect but felt it is still within norms. this imbalance can affect handling, especially while turning. this leaning is very noticeable.

Vehicle leans noticiably to the left, even when parked with no cargo. the dealer showed me a service bulletin that stated the leaning was acceptable by their standards. i feel that the leaning can affect the dynamic handling of the vehicle and can cause or aggravate handling problems.
