Defect SummaryNissan is recalling certain model year 1996-2004 pathfinder and model year 1997-2003 infiniti qx4 vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, connecticut, delaware, iowa, illinois, indiana, massachusetts, maine, maryland, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, washington d.c., west virginia and wisconsin. in areas of the country in which heavy concentrations of road salt are used, a mixture of snow/water and salt may enter an assembly location hole in the upper strut housing, causing water to collect at the mating surface of the strut housing panel and the inner hood ledge assembly. over time, this snow/water and salt intrusion may result in corrosion of the strut tower housing in some subject vehicles.
Consequence SummaryThe strut housing may crack and pull away from the inner hood ledge assembly. this may lead to grinding noises, increased steering effort, and possibly the steering column to break, resulting in the loss of steering control, which could result in a crash.
Corrective SummaryNissan will inspect the strut housing and repair the vehicles as necessary, free of charge. an interim notification letter to owners will be mailed on or before may 16, 2011. owners may contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261.
NotesOwners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov .

I was driving my 2001 nissan pathfinder on a bumpy road and hit a pothole, the right strut punched through the strut tower and i could no longer control the vehicle. i then had it towed to my local shop and found out the whole of both strut towers were corroded beyond belief. i had one repaired after i reported it to my insurance company who then charged me a point on my license for the accident. i then traded the vehicle in order to avoid paying through the nose for the other strut tower repair, i then find out nissan did a recall on the problem. now they refuse to pick up the phone. they even gave me a bogus e-mail account to send the paper work for the reimbursement. i feel they at least owe me the amount for the repairs and the surcharge i am still paying.

I noticed a little pull in the steering wheel when taking a turn, so i stopped in to the nissan dealership an was advised that the shock tower has failed. this is a problem that nissan has know about an has done nothing about it. i did contact nissan and they said they would pay $1100. towards the repair, which was $2100.00, i tailed them this is a safety defect and should have been recalled. lucky for me an other people i wasn't driving on a highway an had this fail completely. the wheel would have fallen off an have lost control of the vehicle. they know there is a problem and have decided not to take action. i have argued with nissan, they do know there is a problem, otherwise why would they be willing to pay without lots of questions. i have had this vehicle since 2001 and have done all the oil changes, brakes, tires, it is in great shape, an this failed because of a problem in workmanship. you can find many people that own this vehicle and have had this problem, they need to do something before someone really gets hurt or killed with a shock tower failure.

I have a 2001 nissan pathfinder 4x4 se. for about 8 months now i have been experiencing a problem with the handling of this truck. the car begins to shake extremely hard between 55 - 65 mph. the shaking is so bad it is sometimes difficult to keep control of the steering because the steering wheel shakes just as much. i have seen that im not the only one with this problem. i have gone to the dealer several times to get this problem resolved. they told me it could have been the alignment or the balancing of the wheels and i payed to get that done to no avail. the problem persists even with new wheels and tires. i dont know what it is but it should be looked into before something terrible happens to somebody because of this problem. *ak

My 2001 nissan pathfinder se 145,169 miles at the time.  Regarding pe11004 - my left front strut tower has completely failed. there is a heavy amount of corrosion around the area, and the thin metal, once corroded, ripped like paper around the base of the tower. handling of the vehicle became very poor, and steering became more difficult. i believe it also put stress on the brake lines, as i could feel pulsing in the brake pedal while going over bumps with the bad tower.

Consumer was driving at approximately 60 mph when started to feel like light travel trailer was moving back and forth .then trailer immediately flipped over, causing vehicle to flip over. vehicle was advertised to pull a trailer up to 5000 pounds, and the one that consumer was pulling was about 3100 pounds at most. dealer claimed that bent was so bent up that they could not determine cause. this was the first time consumer pulled trailer with this vehicle, and was only able to get approx. 2,000 miles.*ak

I purchased a 2001 nissan pathfinder in 2004. the bose 6-disc changer immediately failed. the dealership repaired it because it fell within the 30-day warranty period. it worked for about two months after that and then i got an error message one day when i tried to load a cd and it hasn't worked since. last spring, i took the car in for a tire rotation and balance and my mechanic noted that there was a slight fish-tailing in the back which was caused by deterioration of the rear bushings, and over time, the fish-tailing would get so bad, it could possibly cause an accident when braking. apparently this is a common occurrence in certain pathfinder models, and nissan even corrected the problem in future models of the pathfinder once the problem was discovered. i have read multiple posts to this website as well as others regarding both of these issues in the 2001 nissan pathfinder. how can nissan not be responsible for the repair/replacement of this faulty equipment? the rear bushing problem is a major safety hazard, and i pray for nissan's sake no one is ever killed in an accident because of this issue, because a good attorney will have a field day in court with the class action lawsuit. is nhtsa ever going to do anything about this? based on an article i read located at this website: http://www.wallpaperama.com/forums/nissan-pathfinder-wobbles-problem-rocks-side-to-side-t6838.html, nissan has been aware of this problem since at least 1998 and has even issued a service repair description for nissan dealerships. this is a major expensive repair. someone really needs to help consumers with this problem.

I have a 2001 nissan pathfinder. it sway from side to side while i'm driving. it doesn't have to be fast or slow. first, i changed the front shock absorber. not much improvement, then the ball joint. it improved about halfway. but now after about a month, it's even worse. i did some research in the internet and surprise, i'm not the only one having this problem. it looks like a lot of pathfinder owners have the same issue. i know my car is old but quite a few have the same issue before they hit 100k miles. i think this is a design problem or parts problem and should be recall. so far, i didn't see any death or accident reported because of this but i'm sure it's bound to happen. it's dangerous driving this thing around with the swaying specially in high speed.

No crash yet but i do have a fish tailing, side to side wobbling that appears to be a design defect from nissan. i own a 2001 nissan pathfinder with 99,000 miles and at speeds over 50 miles an hour, the truck will start wobbling side to side due to a rut in the road or a gust of wind. from what i have been told by several nissan mechanics, the rear upper and lower control arm bushings are bad and deteriorate prematurely, causing the dangerous wobble in the truck. the cost to replace the bushings is $700.00 plus and have to be replaced. very poor design which will end up causing serious accidents or injuries. thank you. *tr

Rear suspension sways violently from side to side when driving over 50 miles per hour, especially when cruise control is used. several mechanics could not diagnose problem so it has continued to get worse over past 2 years. now, through internet, learn this is a very common problem in this model, requires replacement of bushings and is known to the manufacturer who has taken no action. *tr

I have 2wd nissan pathfinder. the car has been vobbeling left to right and right to left at speeds of 50mph and over. some of the symptoms are excessive play in the rear axle especially during moderate acceleration or deceleration. a vehicle pulling at a constant speed excessive sway and rocking motion in the front suspension when coming to a stop. there are about 100 + people that i found on one website with the same problem. http://www.topix.net/forum/autos/t5lstpr50npco9ctl there are many other sites like the above site where people have posted their problem and solution. *tr
