Defect SummaryVehicle description: minivans. the fuel tank vent hose allows air to vent from the fuel tank during refueling. cracks have developed in the vent hose. if (1) the fuel tank is overfilled, not allowing excess fuel in the vent hose to flow back into the tank, (2) the vehicle is driven only a short distance after refueling and, (3) there is subsequently significant heating of the fuel tank, the fuel in the tank can expand into the vent hose and leak fuel.
Consequence SummaryFuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the vent hose.

I bought a 1995 nissan quest van with 30,000 miles on it about 4 years ago(1999-2000). my complaint is that every winter on very cold days, when we turn the heat on in the mornings you can smell a very bad raw gas smell. after the engine warms up it will usually go away but not always and sometimes when you come to a stop it will start again. i am talking about a very strong gas smell, not just a little bit. it is enough that sometimes we have to get out of the vehicle it's so bad. sometimes we roll the windows down, which is not very comfortable seeing that it usually happens on the coldest days. i have taken it to a local nissan dealership 2 or 3 times and they have fixed all the recalls and bulletins put out by nissan on problems related to this. these never worked. i also took it to another auto repair shop 3 times to have it fixed. nothing has worked to this point. this is a little unsettling that the manufacturer of the vehicle cannot even find the problem and i can't keep pouring money into this vehicle and not seeing any results. nor do i feel comfortable about my family riding around in this vehicle.*ak

Will start, run 5 minutes then die. the wiring to the radiator fan fuse box is burnt. took it to nissan dealer who replaced the burnt wires, cost $75. they said the engine wiring needed replaced. i called a dealer near home and they said it would cost $3000 to fix this. this is half of what the car is worth. we have replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump, and ignition coil.

My wife complained of a strong gasoline odor inside the car. the dealer discovered that the fuel lines over the engine were cracked and were leaking gasoline. we have owned 6 automobiles (all bought new), and this is the first time that one has had a problem with the fuel lines.

While fueling my 1995 nissan quest i noticed fuel dripping from underneath. i had been noticing a fuel smell for sometime after fueling for several months until the leak developed. when i got where i could make a complete inspection i crawled under my vehicle and found there are 2 rubber lines which lead from the fuel neck into the gas tank. i noted that the small line (know as a vent line) had some cracks in it and also i could see vapors emitting from the cracks. i feel like this could be a potential fire hazard and also a hazard to the occupants of the auto because those vapors could possibly enter into the passenger compartment. also this is an enviromential hazard since gas vapors are allowed to vent into the atmosphere. i have talked to several people and also some mechanics and found this to be a common problem. i replaced the vent hose on my auto and it seems to have cured the problem. i feel like this problem needs to be investigated and should there be a wide spread problem then the part needs to be replaced with a better quality rubber.

Engine quit entirely when traveling at 77 mph on interstate .was able to coast into rest area. was towed to nissan dealer in tallahassee , fl and the fuel pump was replaced. this was not reported at the time to ntsa . i am reporting this now because i now know the problem is wide spread. my son in law bought a quest the same time and he has had 4 failures.2 occured last week. we now find out his sister owns a quest and she has had a failure. it appears the failure occurs at high speeds in hot driving conditions. my concern now is it will happen again if the problem still exists. i have not duplicated those conditions i just described since my incident, but my son in law has. he lives in ca.*ak

We have had three separate incidents when either climbing a mountain or driving through hot dessert conditions that our minivan would suddenly stop! the aaa worker told us that he sees this all the time and has to do weak fuel pumps in minivans that fail when stressed! our last incident was dangerous occurring on hwy 40 to be repeatedly stuck with high speed trucks passing by us. our nissan dealer checked his record (a few months back)and confirmed that nissan was aware of this problem but said that it would cost us >$700 to fix to change the fule pump. the latest nissan recall of the fuel hose may also have something to do with this issue. well we found out the hard way in the hot dessert since this problem does not surface driving in the cooler los angeles area.*ak

The problem with fuel pump wiring inside of fuel tank. the problem started about a year ago with the fuel pump's performance, such as humming sound from tank section or no pump start up at starting the engine. but last day of march of this year i was not able to start the car at all due to complete pump failure. i consider my self as very good mechanic as far as car is concern. when i open the fuel pump assembly , i discovered two electrcal wires, red(+) and black(-), were tangled each other. due to friction of two wires together, red wire's insulation were may be two paper-thin leftbof bare copper wire. black wire were even thinner than red's where i can almost see the bare wires. i could only imagine what could hapen with electrical short inside the fuel tank. i replaced the fuel pump with original factory part with different rearrangement of electrical wires. i was very lucky to find the problem earlier. you may call me at work or e-mail me .*ak

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE - FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM - INJECTORS
06/05/2002208/01/2095
The original fuel injectors all failed at 55,000 miles, reported by the dealer to be due to fuel additives that were placed in the fuel by amoco and that were not covered by warranty. they were replaced by the dealer at my cost then 25,000 miles later thay ae failing again. the dealer suggested that i contact nissan, which i did. they imply that i placed additives in the gas which voided the warranty and that they only warrant fuel injectors for 12,000 miles. they also claim that i did not properly maintain the injectors but refuse to give any specific information in writing. this problem has caused the vehicle to stall in traffic several times, nearly resulting in accidents. nissan refuses to addrss this issue and the dealer stated that they have not had injector problems with other quests. do i have a lemon?*ak
