Tl*the contact owns 1999 nissan quest. while driving approximately 5 mph into a the parking lot the vehicle began to idle excessively until she shifted it into neutral gear and turned the vehicle off. the vehicle was towed to the dealer who stated that the vehicle speed control sensor failed. the dealer also stated that the brake system needed to be repaired. the estimated repair cost was $875. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer stated that they would not assist with the repair since the warranty had expired. the current and failure mileages were 78,000.

Throttle body assembly problem, petal gets stuck and considerable pressure is needed to move on. *bf *sc

Sticking throttle caused by build-up of soot, carbon, gum, or whatever it is in the throttle body assembly. the throttle requires excess pressure to overcome its sticking. then, when it unsticks, the vehicle lurches forward faster than expected. this can be a very unsafe reaction at times, depending on the situation. it is also very hard on my wife's neck; she has had a cervical discectomy and fusion. i have received a class action lawsuit which proposes reimbursement for throttle body cleanings or replacements and free future cleanings/replacements during the manufacturer's warranty period. all this is wonderful and good for the original owner(s) --- at least during the warranty period --- but does nothing to improve safety! what if you wreck taking the car to their shop? and what happens when someone else buys the vehicle who isn't aware of the problem? if you need a copy of the lawsuit, i made one just for you. other information that you might need follows: nissan quest settlement administrator, c/o rosenthal & company llc, p.o. box 6175, novato, ca 94948-6175 1-888-866-8245 class counsel: sean r. matt, hagens berman llp, 1301 fifth avenue, suite 2900, seattle, wa 98101 counsel for nna: malcolm e. wheeler, wheeler trig & kennedy, p.c., 1801 california street, suite 3600, denver, co 80202-2617 the incident date below is most likely incorrect. i know the first time our throttle stuck, i cleaned it myself because the dealer wanted an ungodly price to do it. i don't remember when it was. my wife says she has paid for one cleaning, but she is unavailable to ask about the date. i had to put something in the blocks, to get past this point. *la

I received the information about the settlement regarding the throttle body cleaning. i called my local dealer and 1-800-nissan1 to request a throttle body cleaning. my van currently has 80,000 miles on it. i have in my possession 2 invoices (1 at 52,000 miles and 1 at 70,000 miles) from the dealer showing where i took the vehicle in for service regarding this problem (and other things) and they did nothing about it. i was told (as others were) that it is maintenance and i chose not to have it done (or not to spend $150). i purchased the extended service agreement from the local dealer. at this point, i have been told that they will not perform a throttle body cleaning on my vehicle because it is out of warranty--even though i have proof from the dealer that i was having this problem and even though i bought the extended service agreement. my husband and i have owned 4 nissans--we will never own another! *la

Shortly after purchasing the quest, i noticed a vibration in the vehicle steering wheel and encountered a rough ride when the vehicle went over 30 miles an hour. i took the car to the dealer the first time and they balanced and rotated the tires. shortly after, i experienced the same problem and returned to the dealer. this time the dealer told me that the tires were out of true and that i needed to go to goodyear to have the tires replaced. goodyear replaced two of the tires. a few months later, i returned to goodyear because the problem returned. goodyear then replaced one additional tire. within a few months, i returned to goodyear again with the same problem and they agreed to change all four tires. within a few months i returned to goodyear with the same problem and they suggested that the vehicle weight may of been too much for the tires so he requested that i replace the performance tires on the vehicle with other tires. i agreed and goodyear again replaced all four tires. in december 2001, i once again returned to the goodyear because the problem was once again present. they agreed to replace the tires, but felt that the problem was with the suspension on the quest rather than a defect on the tire. the second problem i've encounter with the quest since about 15,000 miles is the accelerator pedal sticks. this is a more serious problem because on several occasions the problem almost caused an accident. it occurs when the vehicle is stopped at a light, and i then try to accelerate. the pedal is so stuck, that when it finally gives way the vehicle takes off quickly. this also happens if i take my foot off the accelerator to slow down, then if i try to accelerate again i can't. i took it in for service, but the dealer said it was an intermitten problem and could not replicate the difficulty. the problem is still intermitten, but i noticed that when i drove it in florida on vacation this past month, it occured regularly.*ak

When cruise control is activated, it does not always turn off when the brakes are applied or cancel switch is pushed. if i have cruise set at 65 and approach and intersection or object in the road or lower speed zone, and apply the brakes but then press the accelerator to continue at a lower speed (45), the accelerator will go down on its own and the van will accelerate on its own till it hits the 65 mph that was originally set on the cruise. this occured 3 out of the last 5 times the cruise control was used. i had to quicly apply brakes again when i noticed this happening to avoid child in road and the back passenger was injured slightly on the head when this happened. the problem was reported to nissan who replied that it may not be on warranty, but when taken to the dealer and discussed, i had to pay the 50 dollar copay on a 54 dollar repair. i have not tried to use the cruise contol since being serviced.*ak

Throttle plate sticking, nissan states maintenance needed to remove carbon buildup. no maintenance to throttle plate stated in owners manual. appears to be too close tolerance in throttle plate to housing fit. slight wear in bushings allow misalignment and thust sticking of throttle plate off idle. nissan motors totally unresponsive and stated that this is a problem they see all the time and requires cleaning of the throttle plate and body. refer to file no. 3116108 regional service advisor - lenice dower 800-647-7261. please do not allow this to build into a firestone tire debacle.

Accelerator would stick and not allow me to press it down. this would occur as after stopping at a light or intersection. the pedal would not budge, thus causing me to pump it to try to wiggle it to move. when it did catch, it would accelerte abruptly. many times i was in intersection and almost hit front behind or side becuase the van would not move. also, at the 30,000 mile maintenance, i was told that there was less than 10% left on front brakes. this is premature as most cars do not need brake pads changed so quickly.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL - ACCELERATOR PEDAL
08/10/2007105/13/1999
In may 1999, nissan corp sold me defective nissan quest. every 2-3 years this vehicle develops excessive carbonous deposits in the part of the engine called the throttle-body assembly. these deposits cause the accelerator pedal to require increased effort to push the pedal accelerator down (sticky pedal). being the only owner of this vehicle, i already had to clean the throttle-body 3 times. this defect was recognized and settled by nissan corp in class action in 2003, please see the copy of the first page of settlement letter enclosed. my dealership, rothrock, in allentown pa cleaned the throttle for the last, 3rd time in december 2003 at no charge, please see the copy of invoice enclosed. the throttle needs to be cleaned again. my latest discussion with nissan rep, erica, 1-800-647-7261 ext 57741, file n 5812745 was on 8/10/07. nissan refuses to clean at nissan's expense explaining that a diagnosis must be performed first for $70.00 per hour. i consider this nissan?s offer as a deceptive way to avoid the responsibility to fix the nissan's defect at no charge to me. *tr

The gas pedal on my 1999 nissan quest sticks quite often, such that you must jam your foot onto the pedal to depress it. this is a dangerous situation as when you do jam the pedal the car must accelerate quickly into traffic. my mechanic looked at the pedal and could not find any problem with it, since it wouldn't stick when he was testing it. however, it does get stuck very often. i've seen postings on the web from others who also state the same problem with this vehicle. i would like to join the growing list of people complaining about this trouble in case there is a major issue (i.e., deaths on the roadway) resulting which causes the vehicle to be recalled.* jb

The throttle body has now been cleaned 3 times because the gas pedal contiues to stick. the car was under warranty once and the lawsuit against nissan paid for the second, but i recently paid for the third. this has occurred at about 30,000 miles, 55,000 miiles and now 81,000 miles. this is a life threatening situation. this car should be recalled.*ak

Due to the accelerator pedal sticking, it has been necessary to clean the throttle body on two occasions. i consider this problem a safety issue as the vehicle lurches forward when sufficient pressure is applied to the petal that will override the stuck throttle. the forward lunge will become acute if cleaning is delayed. i experienced the problem almost immediately after the 36 month warranty period had expired (i now understand that the warranty period was extended but without any notice to the vehicle owners).*ak my disappointment in nissan is: 1.no notice was received to alert owners of a safety issue of this magnitude. 2.that no recall notice was received to correct the problem and 3.that no notice was received to advise owners that the warranty period had been extended and to bring their vehicle in for a throttle body inspection.

Two safety issues: i looked up my 1999 quest minivan information and saw 4 recalls. i have never taken my quest in for a recall -- because i never received any information on them. i hope that means that mine was not affected? second, we have an ongoing issue with the accelerator sticking, due to carbon buildup. i have gotten the information for the lawsuit to reimburse me for the expenses -- but the issue still remains. at this point, we have had the throttle cleaned at least 4 times (i'm assembling my receipts) and need to have it cleaned again now. it seems like nissan ought to recall the part and correct the issue. it is unreasonable that it keeps happening. plus, the reimbursement claim form only allows a $45 reimbursement; i just got an ad from nissan for a discount price of $89.95 to clean the throttle. why would the reimbursement amount and the ad price be so out of line. the accelerator sticking is a major safety issue that i hope nhtsa will investigate since nissan has not taken the responsibility to ensure safety is a part of its normal process. if you make a bad part, own up to it and do not endanger lives.*ak

Accelerator pedal constantly sticking! there is is a major problem and should be addressed by the national highway and traffic safety administration. i know that there is a class action suit involving the throttle-body cleaning but my vehicle does not qualify because the warranty has expired. the problem has existed since the vehicle was new but the dealership said that they could not find a problem with it. i have all of this documented in service receipts and paperwork. why would i want to be a part of a settlement that revokes all my rights just because my warranty has expired? this should not be based on the issue of if your car is still under warranty or not. this is a very dangerous issue and should be considered a recall from nissan north america or by the national highway and traffic safety administration now!!!! before families are killed because of an known accelerator sticking problem.*ak

The accelerator pedal sticks. requires excessive pressure to push down. the full body throttle has been cleaned but i still have a problem. there is a class action settlement going on that would allow me to be reimbursed for the charges paid for the cleaning but the problem is dangerous. the pedal will stick while going down the road and/or crossing a busy intersection. i have two children i have to transport in that vehicle daily. it is my understanding that all 1999 nissan quest models have this problem and i don't think i should have to pay to fix their problem.

Accelerator pedal sticking. this has happened on two or more occasions. i have not been back to the dealership yet because i don't want them wasting my time with telling me that this is a maintenance problem as they have told so many others here in this column. this is definetly a defect and requires an investigation.*ak

After driving the van for 10-15 miles, the gas pedal sticks. this is a very serious problem that i feel nissan should find a way to fix. i went to the dealership and was told i would have to pay $130.00 to have the carbon build-up removed. i asked why was it not covered in my 3yr/36,000mi warrenty, i was told it was not covered because it was normal wear and tear . if that was normal then why is it not in the owners manual. it happends daily so for safety reasons i will have to foot $130.00 of my hard earned money for something that shouldn't be happening. i thought i was getting a reliable family van, but i thought wrong. i have always owned nissan's( 3maxima's, 2 stanza's 1 quest ) and have referred over 20 people to buy nissan's, but as far as a van goes i am very dissatisfied.*ak

When the gas pedal is pressed it will not go unless you punch the gas pedal and then you spin out. the dealership claims that it is a carbon build up and should be cleaned periodically, but the manual does not say anything about it being a regulat maintenace item. they claim it is but i feel if it is then it should be listed with all other maintenance items. i have pulled out several times with plenty of time to get pulled out but my accelarator would not go and i have almost been hit because of this. i feel it is a safety hazard and would like more to done. i shouldn't have to pay $135 for something to be cleaned when it is not in my manual. i have checked with other oweners and they haven't had this problem. one person who has a chevy mailbu had this problem but chevrolet covered his under warranty. if it is a maintenance item then nissan should have to publish in the their owners manual.

Accelerator pedal sticks - this happens after the brake is applied and i try to accelerate, thus causing the van to stall in the intersection and then take off quickly and also occurs if i relaese my foot from the accelerator to slow down gradually, and then reapply it, the pedal again sticks. this started in march and then went away for a month and has been occuring daily - sometimes 4 or 5 times in one commute. this has nearly caused a few fatal accidents when the van stalled in a busy intersection or while i was turning into the driveway and gas pedal stuck causing crosstraffic to screech to a halt. have almost been hit from behind because the van does not accelearte after a red light - have to pump it or hold it down before it releases. i called dealer and he said it was normal and part of throttle problem, but this started when the van had only 20000 miles on it
