Defect SummaryOn certain minivans equipped with a power sliding door(s), at an ambient temperature below approximately 40 degrees fahrenheit, the actuator for the power sliding door(s) may experience binding due to an out-of-specification condition. in order to open, close or reverse a power sliding door, the shift selector lever must be in park. if the actuator is experiencing binding and the driver shifts the vehicle out of park while a power sliding door is still closing, the door latches may not engage.
Consequence SummaryThis can result in the door coming open unexpectedly upon rapid acceleration, and an occupant could fall out of the door and be injured.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the actuator for the power sliding door(s). owner notification began on june 23, 2004. owners should contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

In january 2004, nissan received reports of power sliding doors coming open while driving.nissan determined that at temperatures below 40 degree f, an out-of-spec door actuator could bind and prevent the door latches from fully engaging.this can lead to the door coming open unexpectedly.nissan notified nhtsa by letter dated april 1, 2004, that it is conducting a safety recall campaign (nhtsa no. 04v186) on my 2004 nissan quest vehicles with power-sliding doors produced from march 26, 2003 to december 17, 2003.nissan modified the acutator door motor on vehicles built after december 17, 2003 for reasons not related to the inadvertent door opening issue.nissan reports that vehicles built after december 17, 2003 are not subject to the failure mode that causes inadvertent opening.odi's review of the odi owner reports with known build dates (7 of 9 reports, plus one report received prior to dec 17 but with unknown build date) indicates that complaint vehicles were manufactured before the door actuator improvement date (dec 17).also, nissan reports no complaint vehicles with build dates after december 17.nissan's action addresses the concerns of odi.therefore, this investigation is closed.

2004 nissan quest. consumer states safety problem with the power windows and power doors *tgw the consumer stated the passenger side window would not stay closed. when the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, he was informed to fix the problem it would require replacing the motor, which would be very expensive. the consumer declined the repair. later on, the window reverted back to its proper closing procedure and operated as it was designed. however, the driver's window would not close automatically and the consumer was forced to hold down the button manually. the door on the passenger side would not close completely. it would stop about half way. the consumer had to physically push the door closed which lasted for weeks. then, suddenly the door began closing correctly without any attempt at repair. the sliding door on the driver's side didn't function as it should. it all started when the consumer's grandson was exiting the vehicle by pushing the open button from the inside. as he was getting out, the door reversed itself before it opened completely and began closing, hitting him and wouldn't stop as it was supposed to when meeting an object. fortunately, he was only frightened, but not injured. the door continued to malfunction, so the consumer no longer used it anymore. the consumer referenced recall # 04v186000. however, his vin was not included in the recall. *jb

Passenger side sliding door fails to latch or pops open when driving and the temperature outside is below 30 degrees fahrenheit. this vehicle has been taken back to the dealer at least 4 or 5 times so far. this renders the vehicle inoperative until the door latches shut. this is endangering our children who sit in car seats in the second row of seats in the quest. *tr

Purchased this vehicle 3 months ago, used. we have had nothing but problems since. the main problems are: the roof leaks, whether it's the sunroof or something else causing the leak remains to be seen. dealer claims no leak found, but everytime it rains there is water in the van, which now reeks of mold. the passenger power sliding door will not close properly on the first try. it keeps opening up right as it goes to close. dealer claims fixed but still have to make 2 or 3 attempts before it will finally work. door would not close at all 2 times in the last week. manual override did not release the door. after waiting 5 minutes and trying again, the door would finally shut. the a/c does not blow out cool air on very hot (over 80 degrees) days. *jb

The driver's side sliding door, not powered, will open up when accelerating or going around a curve. the door will not close when the temp is below 32 degrees. obviously this is dangerous when my 6 month old infant is in the car when the door opens up. the nissan dealer was told about it 4 times and today, again, it was not even looked at. does my infant have to fall out of the car before this problem will be taken seriously? how do i get this fixed? the recall was on the power door and not on the other one. there is a problem on both types of doors and this is not acknowledged. *jb

I own a 2004 nissan quest se. there seems to be a serious defect with the safety features on the power sliding doors. while out one afternoon, my son decided that he would press the button to close the power sliding door on his side. i had bent down to tie his shoe and failed to notice that he didn't move his hand out of the way after he had pressed the button to close the door. unfortunately, the power sliding door completely closed on my 3-year-old son's hand. thankfully, he was not seriously injured (broken bones, etc). however, i feel as if this is a serious problem that nissan needs to address soon. also, there have also been a few times where the doors have been closing, and, for whatever reason, my husband or i have tried to stop them. we literally have to put all of our strength into stopping the moving doors, and even then, sometimes they continue to close without hesitation. the powered back hatch/door on the van is very sensitive to anything being in the way; i don't understand why the power sliding doors aren't just as sensitive. i desperately hope nissan will correct this major problem before someone becomes seriously injured. *jb

My nissan quest has been plagued with electrical problems from day one. the windows go down completely on their own with vehicle turned off. the passenger sliding door opens randomly on its own. the tire alarm goes off when tire pressure is fine. air vents fly off and lights fall out of the ceiling. most troubling is the automatic side sliding door. owner's manual stated on page 3-8 the door will reverse direction immediately during power open or close, a warning chime will sound and the door will reverse direction and return to the full open or full close position. the door does not operate this way, the door will not stop when it encounters an object it will continue to push the object in its way. my husband and i have both been caught by the door. it has knocked small children to the ground. i have complained to nissan , and they insisted that this was the way the door were supposed to operate. the automatic close button is right at the level a small child would put his hand to enter the vehicle and could be easily activated. nissan says the door is designed to reverse within the last couple inches even though this is contradictory to its manual. please help before a child is seriously injured. *ak

Car was brought in for a recall of the airbag sensor and the automatic sliding side door. airbag sensor is still not functioning properly after 4 attempts at fixing it. side door not properly functioning but service department can't 'duplicate' it so they say it's fine. car is still in the shop, will be for a total (for this trip) of almost 4 weeks, until a rep from nissan comes to try and fix it. electrical system is a mess, lights, windows, power seats, doors, seem to act on their own. nissan refuses to believe me! driver side passenger (non-power) door sticks, can barely open it myself. flat tire light comes on when temperature outside dips. beware of airbag sensor, try to check it yourself using different weight people. very dangerous! *jb

I purchased my 2004 nissan quest in september 2003. the day i drove the vehicle off the lot the sliding doors began to rattle and haven't stopped since. i have taken the vehicle to two different dealers for a total of nine times. the dash reflects in the windshield making it a hazard to drive, the driver's door has a squeak when opening that is caused by the hinge flexing where it is attached to the body. have been told by dealer this cannot be fixed. the sliding door panel on the driver's side rear, protrudes about 1/8 from the body and has a dent in the corner of the panel and have been told by dealer this cannot be fixed. i paid over $31k for this car and it seemingly cannot be fixed no matter what is wrong. i have contacted nissan 5 times by telephone and on one ever returns my calls. *ak

1- normaly exiting the car my 3.5 yr old son got his right foot crushed by the right passenger automatic sliding door which started closing by itself. 2-even after recall has been performed for the sliding doors not locking this door seems to have a mind of its own and it is not acceptable nor safe that we can't exit the vehicle without fear of injury!!! specially for both of my young sons. - at his moment the car has been reported 2 times to the car dealer and the fix has been the additional lubrication of the door and cleaning of the contacts. in addition to the recall repairs to the locking mechanism which has never been and issue. last, my wife was also a victim of this fault with a nasty bruise to her forearm. i truly beleive that immediate action is required from nissan, to backup the advertised label for the vehicle of mommy car hence young children are comming in and out the car, using this doors since as responsible parents we have assing the back row seat as the safest place.*ak

A newly purchased 2004 nissan quest with current mileage of around 4,800 miles when incident happened. while driving on highway, the driver side rear tire suddenly bent and smoke came out. van was then towed back to dealership and found that the cross member was broken off. dealership denied warranty coverage because service manager thought that such damage may have been caused by a collision, because he saw a few light scratches and a smaller than 2cm mark on the rim. i am sure that the van was not hit by anything when the tire was bent. the scratches and little mark could be caused by pulling over to shoulder with a bent tire. i pointed to the service manager that the joint of the broken cross member was full of rust, a sign of incomplete sealed over a period of time, obviously not a new damage caused by an accident. even tried contacting manufacturer many times, but no solution was made because manufacturer makes decision based on dealership statement. also, squeaking noise has been coming out from rear sliding doors, dealerships stated that they removed doors but no finding and problems still exist. *jb

I bought this 2004 nissan quest se on september 18, 2003 and took a road trip visit my daughter 1300 miles away form my home. during the trip, we noticed air infiltration from the passengers door and the right side sliding door. in addition to the air leaks, the right sliding door and the rear hatch rattled, sometimes constantly and other times when passing over irregularities in the pavement. i took the van to the dealer on numerous occasions and it still is not fixed. this since these are power doors i would expect that there is a positive latch upon closing, however i was asked if i stopped and cycled the door. i have found the side doors and rear hatch to be not latched tightly on at least six occasions. in addition, the power sliding doors do not always open from commands to the door handle. on one visit, the dealer replaced the mask, other parts on rear lift gate and adjusted the rear latch, and it still rattles. i found the upper tailgate stoplight to also have loose parts inside it (has not been fixed yet). the right and left rear vent windows were rattling and found to be loose at the hinges. both rear tail light assemblies were found to have loose structural parts internally. left one has been replaced with one that don't rattle. however, a look at the new quests on the dealers lot found most to all taillights rattled. during the trip the van was hard to control and drifted to the left at highway speeds, when i got to my daughters house i made an appointment to have it fixed, a week later they supposedly aligned it, but it was still noticeable. in december at my home i took it in again and the alignment was good but the steering was about 4 inches cockeyed. which was fixed at at a later visit. i have owned two nissan vehicles at a time for the more than the last decade and this does not represent my experiences with those vehicles.

I have had a continuing problem with the rear sliding doors on my new 2004 nissan quest. what started as an excessive amount of rattling of the rear doors has escalated to the point where the doors do not function properly. i've taken the quest in to have the doors adjusted five times at the local nissan dealer and the doors continue to rattle. the local nissan dealer was actually able to stop the driver's side door from rattling, but this resulted in a door not able to be opened using the exterior handle, you had to use the key-fob or interior switches (not acceptable in a $33,000 automobile). the car was brought back in for service and while the door now operates (sort of see below), the rattling is back. the local nissan dealer where i bought the car does not know what else to do without input direct from nissan - i hope they are working on a solution to the quests sliding door problems! the problems with my vehicles rear sliding doors continue to get worse. on wednesday, january 14, 2004 i had a problem with both sliding doors; neither was able to be closed. miles from home in subzero weather with a car whose siding rear doors would not close bet you can imagine how happy i was. thank god i figured out how to operate the doors manually. this story only gets worse! after manually closing the doors, i switched on the doors again for electrical operation and commenced my travel towards home; imagine my horror when traveling down the road at about 45 mph to have the passenger side rear slider opened up all on its own. can you imagine what might have occurred if i had had my young 9 year old daughter in the back. horror doesn't come close to being an adequate description. nissan has released an inferior and unsafe product for sale to an unsuspecting public. this car is a disaster waiting to happen, and so far nothing has been done to correct the situation. *cb

I own an sl purchased in oct 2003. there has been one continual problem and three new problems recently. first the new problems: the past 2 weeks temps have been in single digits and there has been no snow or rain. i have had to keep car in driveway. during these past weeks i've experienced three problems, one of which infuriated me. first two items - passenger window will not open and car does not 'beep' when i lock from remote (which makes me have to turn back and double check the doors only to find it has indeed locked)- are annoying and i attributed them to the temperature. the third problem occurred yesterday: passenger side automatic sliding door would not close once opened. it would beep, slide almost closed, then open right up again. i could not force it to remain closed. this happened in a grocery store parking lot, temperature was -1 degrees, car had a couple hundred dollars worth of purchases inside, and i had my very young child with me. after checking manual and speaking with people at the nissan dealership (neither of which were helpful, to be honest) i tried cleaning the tracks around door. there was no ice, dirt, sand, etc. and still the door would not close. i was told by the dealership that there was no manual override which would have allowed me to close the door. later in the day after the car had been in the sun a few hours, my husband was able to get the door closed enough to grab and lock it. this door issue is unacceptable. we have three young children and purposely bought this car for it's reliability and safety. there was nothing reliable nor safe about what happened to us yesterday. another problem: a creaking, squeaky noise comes from the back of the van while driving. sounds like an old schoolbus. dealership has no idea of cause. were told to bring van in for service. *ak

On 10/25/03 we purchased a 2004 nissan quest. within one week of purchase we notice a loud rattling noise coming from the driver side rear sliding door. after 2 attempts to repair at the dealership the noise was attenuated but still persisted. after the 2nd visit the rattling sound expanded to include a creaking noise each time we braked. on 11/29/03 the rear driver side sliding door would not open so we placed our children in the van using the automatic sliding door on the rear passenger side. after buckling the children in we stared the van and left for home. at approximately 11:55pm the driver side rear door popped open!!! on 12/01/03 my wife brought the van back to the dealership for the fourth time, where an attempt was made to fix the rattling again and the doors were adjusted. on 12/02/03 three hours after picking up the car from the dealership the driver side passenger door locked again and the automatic door went into a spasm where it would start to close but then pop back open. we eventually were able to close the doors but the rattling persisted. the locking and jamming of the doors is inconsistent but the rattling sound occurs whenever we go over 35 mph. we are now scheduled to bring the car in for its 5th visit to the service center in 5 weeks. this door not only has rattled and shook during the time we have had it, it now will sometimes not open and even worse can pop open while the car is moving. this is unsafe and the experience of watching my kids look outside of an open door in a moving car was harrowing. i hope the doors never open on a child who is not properly buckled in.

Re: my 2004 nissan quest-have had same problem recur for almost 1 yr & dealer has not fixed it in 5 tries. on 7/21/04, brought my van in for service 'cause an alarm beeper would go off randomly when driving-comes from rear power liftgate. besides the constant beeping, at times the liftgate will not open, also when open the liftgate will not close using the power buttons-then liftgate needs to be shut manually. at my 7/21/04 service appt, the dealer ordered a part that would be installed later to fix beeping. picked the van up about 4:30 pm, got groceries, picked up daughter & drove home. on the way the van was beeping all the way when suddenly a flashing warning light came on that said warning lift gate open. i panicked thinking my lift gate was about to fly open. i pulled over confused because liftgate was not open. i pushed interior control for lift gate but liftgate did not open. thinking i was temp. ok, i slowly drove home w/ flashing warning signal on whole time. when i got home-tried to open liftgate. it wouldn't budge-not w/ power controls inside van nor key fob. it wouldn't open manually either. at that point, i was afraid to drive van any further. was well after 5 pm & the service dept would be closed but i called them anyway. i talked to john nelson, sales mgr & explained what happened. told him i was afraid to drive van because of warning light but can't seem to open/close door either. he assured me that van has safety mechanisms that would prevent door from flying open while driving. i told him that it was hard to believe van was safe when it seemed warning lights were malfunctioning. since 7/21/04 the warning light has not come on again. but the problem that preceded the warning light-the constant beeping-still happens all the time, but only when it's warm. since i live in wi nov 04-mar 05 was problem free. don't know if door will really fly open, but i know quest already had recall for similar problem-sliding doors not latching in sub-40 weather. *jb
