This involves a nissan rogue s 2008 we purchased new from the dealer. at approximately 55,000 miles while on a trip to destin, fl our cvt transmission began to malfunction on the highway. it caused car to lose speed, no longer pull, idle erratically, and not be able to get up to speeds over 55 miles an hour. it would also not pull off from stops but rather just coast out into the middle of an intersection, leaving the driver without control of the vehicle to get out of the way of oncoming traffic. we were instructed by the nissan dealership to limp the car back to atlanta so they could replace the cvt transmission and stated they knew it was a known problem with those particular cvt's. once we got the car back, nissan explained that they had installed a newer model of cvt in our car and that it would not happen again. now, june 23, 2012, our car is back at the dealer with the same issue. the car now has 102,00 miles. this time we are on our way to chattanooga, tennessee when the cvt begins to act up. symptoms included loss of power, loss of speed and idle leaving us unable to switch lanes and get off highway due to lack of pull and power. the cars idle or rpm begins to jump erratically and redlining causing the car to lunge forward uncontrollably and then lose power back and forth. now imagine this all while your wife and three daughters (ages 9, 4, and 9 months) are in the back seat. virtually having no control over the car while other vehicles speed by at 70 mph trying to avoid smashing you to pieces. this time there is no limping it back to the dealership. barely able to make it off the highway, the cvt is severely damaged and inoperable. cvt fluid is draining rapidly out of several different locations. as well, the entire body of the car is coated in trans fluid and smoke billowing out of the hood due to the fluid coating the engine too.

Several times in the past few months, rogue will not accelerate when trying to go from stopped position. no power to go uphill or pull into traffic. this does not happen all the time, only occasionally, but is happening more often. yesterday, car did this while traveling at speed of 55+ mph. this was the first time it slowed while already at high speed. my daughter drives this vehicel and we are parking it for now as there have been several incidences where she has almost been hit by oncoming cars.
05/01/201284000
We were completely stopped at a stop sign waiting to pull out into traffic. there were cars coming but at a safe enough distance so we accelerated, got into the roadway and the car wouldn't move. we had the gas pedal all the way to the floor and the car woudn't move. since then we have had multiple incidents of this where the transmission freezes and we are stuck in oncoming traffic. it's only a matter of time before someone hits us. since i have read of multiple problems exactly like this with this vehicle. why hadn't there been a recall.

Stopped at a stop sign. pushed the accelerator but the car would not accelerate. continued down the road and could not go above 40 mph on the highway. stopped the car at the side of the road, turned off the car. thought maybe just a hiccup and would return to normal. started it up and began to drive and still was unable to accelerate above 40 mph on the highway. called the shop and let them know i was on my way. on the way to the shop the car ran fine, going normal speed. the dealer was unable to find any record in the computer of the problem and so far has been unable to diagnose the problem.

Vehicle has been popping in and out of gear, lurching, stopping for the last two days. today in lurched forward, launching us down an icy hill, after doing 5 or 6 360 degree spins, we stopped at the bottom of the hill. only by sheer luck, did we not hit anything. this seems like a very dangerous problem that others have had. is nissan doing anything about it?
05/28/2009
I purchased a new 2008 nissan rouge in march of 2008. my first road trip was in may of 2009. while driving on the highway i lost power (very dangerous). i took the overdrive off, put petal to floor, pulled over to side of the road nothing helped. i went to dealership for a noise i heard also on trip, motor mounts were loose but noise did not change. ay that time i let them know about loss of power. thinking it was just a fluke because around town i didn't have trouble with power. went on another road trip and it did the same thing. specialist supposely flew in told me it was because the transmission fluid was a tiny bit to to high. i told them i bought it off the showroom floor, after blinking of eyes they still claimed that was the reason. this year next road trip and it did the same thing at 4 different times...very scarey!!! it seems to be getting wirse. my son took it to airport to pck friends up, it happened a hour and a half from home. then reoccured in 5 lanes of city interstate traffic. he was so close to getting hit by the grace of god he didn't. i took it to the city 2 weeks ago and it did the same to me. it is so scarey to begoing along at 65 mph in 5 lanes of bumper traffic and loose power. now i am making payments on a car that i could not even trust to drive my kid back to college this year. i have been to the dealership and i have been on the phone with headquarters of nissan for over a month now and i am not getting no where. looking on this website it looks like there are lots of issues with this car...how many accidents or deaths need to happen before they stand behind there product. would love any feed back on who i need to speak to next! thank you

3 times now my 2008 nissan rogue has had acceleration problems on the highway. it happened the 1st time on aug. 20, 2011 then again on sept. 5, 2011. both times i was driving on the highway, at 60-65mph when suddenly, the car would not go over 40mph even when the gas pedel was floored. i have read online many people are having this same issue with the cvt transmission. i feel this car is unsafe-as you can not move the car up to speed to get it out of the way of on coming traffic. i have an appointment with the nissan dealer on sept. 10-but they are telling me they have not heard of this problem.

I have a 2008 nissan rogue (all wheel drive). it has a loud noise (grinding/clunking) sound at slow speed. i'm told by the dealer that they have another one that is doing the same and they don't have an answer. nissan states that they are looking into it, don't know what it is, but that the vehicle is safe to drive..... if they don't know what it is how can they say that it's safe to drive? to me it sounds like it's either the transmission or transfer case. *tr

I have a transmission rattle/clanking noise which is fairly constant in the car, except at high acceleration. i have complained numerous times to nissan about the problem, but nissan is currently considering this sound normal. it has been getting worse, and i am concerned about a transmission failure, which could cause an accident. *tr

The car started jolting when starting from a stop and then eventually went into gear and drove. took it to the dealership to investigate (putting a total of 10 miles on the car between time the issue started and dropping off at dealer - mastria nissan in raynham, ma). dealer told us the cvt transmission needed full replacement, but car was safe to drive until dealer got the part...it would just sound weird. dealer called about 5 days later and told us to drive the car in to have the repair done under a new warranty nissan was offering due to excessive defects in the cvt transmission. on the way there, the car started decelerating rapidly on its own approaching a stop light and felt like it was going to stall...eventually slowing to about 1 mile an hour...really limping along as i tried to make it up to stop light to turn onto a side street to call a tow truck. as i limped up to the stop light, the transmission suddenly switched into la different gear and accelerated very fast and shot me out into the intersection through a red light! i just barely avoided a serious collision and then immediately pulled the car off the road and called the tow truck. i am reporting this issue because this cvt defect is deadly!!! nissan is just treating it as a warranty item...but it really needs a full recall! it can make the car immediately accelerate or decelerate without any action by the driver...and the fact that it happens most at low speeds means it is likely to happen when slowing for an intersection or attempting to pull out into traffic. it is also an issue because it goes from no symptoms to full failure very quickly. please do something to make nissan recall these cvt transmissions before someone gets killed.

On a drive from nc to ga we noticed that we were losing acceleration on every hill on the highway after about 2 1/2 hours into the drive. we could not accelerate up hills and pressed the gas pedal all the way to the floor. as we climbed the hills we lost acceleration. after stopping for lunch the problem seemed to go away until another 2 1/2 hours more where the problem got worse. tractor trailor trucks were barreling down on us because we kept losing acceleration. we pulled off at an exit and barely could accelerate from a stop. we pulled into a nissan dealer and turned the car off and explained the problem. they said they thought it went into safety mode but could not replicate the problem. it seems that the transmission overheats after a couple hours into the drive and goes into the safety mode which reduced acceleration and power. nissan said there is nothing they can do because they can't replicate the problem but they can only do so by driving it more than 2 hours.

Tl- the contact owns a 2008 nissan rogue. the contact was driving 55 mph when the vehicle decreased in speed and the engine completely shut down. the vehicle started back up but failed to accelerate in any gear. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the failure testing diagnostic indicated the following:(p1715 input speed sensor failure ecm receives input speed sensor signal from tcm through can communication line. ecm uses this signal for engine control dct detection logic). the manufacturer was contacted in reference to the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 99,000 and the current mileage was 101,000. rds

While coming off an intersection the 2008 rogue stalled in the middle of the intersetion. pressing the gas would slow the car more no check engine light appeared. eventually after pumping the gas the car would move again. i had the dealer look at the car and they could not find anything wrong and said it was just too hot outside causing the transmission to run hot. i live in az and it is always hot out here. the same incident happened 2 times after i took it to the dealer.

The acceleration is very delayed from pressing on the gas. sometimes we have had to stop in the middle of the intersection to get it to respond. it happens about every 2 to 3 days and will last throughout the drive. it is still drivable, but is very dangerous. especially when pulling out into traffic. we have taken to the dealership 3 time already. the first two they could not fix it, the third they thought they found and fixed the problem, but 4 days after that it started to happen again, today i was in the middle of an intersection and almost got hit by a car since the vehicle did not accelarate.

I purchased a 2008 nissan rogue sl awd in 2008. i began hearing a noise emanating from the front end of the vehicle at approximately 6000 miles. the noise occurs consistently when decelerating from about 40 mph to 5 mph. as the vehicle begins to decelerate, the noise sounds like a rattling against metal. the noise changes to a grinding sound like metal rubbing against metal as the vehicle loses speed. the grinding sound appears more pronounced when at a slow speed, such as when turning into a parking lot. service manager acknowledges the noise but has no explanation for it and say nissan is awair of the issue and has a fix for it, so i took it in for the factory fix and have noticed the noise is still there. i believe the noise comes from the cvt transmission, and it is probably caused by a defective cvt belt or the cvt belt slipping on the variable pulleys. either cause could lead to catastrophic failure of the cvt belt and result in an immediate and total loss of response to driver accelerator input. my nissan rogue currently has approximately 17000 miles, and the noise is becoming more evident.

2008 nissan rogue, sl awd transmission is very sluggish to accelerate between 20 - 40mph, especially when entering a highway from on ramp. it does not seem to shift unless you take your foot off the gas a little, then rmp's go down and the car will accelerate. this has happened numerous times since purchasing my vehicle in march 2009 . since this car has a cvt transmission, you don't hear or feel gear shifts. i took the car to the dealer and they said the slow acceleration was normal for that vehicle's cvt transmission. i believe it is dangerous as there is no predictability when it will or won't accelerate as necessary when merging onto high speed highways. danger from being rear ended is high . this needs to be addressed by nissan. *tr

The acceleration is very delayed from pressing on the gas. sometimes we have had to stop in the middle of the intersection to get it to respond. it happens about every 2 to 3 days and will last throughout the drive. it is still drivable, but is very dangerous. especially when pulling out into traffic. we have taken to the dealership 3 time already. the first two they could not fix it, the third they thought they found and fixed the problem, but 4 days after that it started to happen again. the car is still under warranty. *tr

I purchased a new nissan rogue and within 3500 miles it began to make noise. second visit to mechanic at about 8000 miles confirmed that car needed a new transmission. after 3500 miles on the new new transmission, noise returned and nissan has authorized a second replacement transmission. *tr

The transmission would not downshift unless it was put into manual mode, vehicle went beyond red line. there wasn't any correlation between speed and acceleration methods. every now and then a loud thump noise is heard from the transmission. this has happened at various intervals, dealer was unable to reproduce the last time it was brought in. *tr

Shortly after purchasing a 2008 nissan rogue sl awd, i began experiencing a grinding, rattling noise coming from which i now know is the cvt transmission. started at less than 3000 miles, very faint and inconsistent but becoming much louder, more consistent and unmistakable. after the third trip to my dealer about this noise and several other issues i am having with my 5 month old vehicle including a major water leak, they finally got on the phone to nissan usa. the service manager advised me that nissan is aware of this transmission issue, they are working on a fix, there have been many transmissions replaced but that is not correcting the problem. i was told to sit tight and wait for nissan to come up with a resolution. i was told that the vehicle is safe to drive because there have been no reported failures from this issue. my problem is, which rogue owner with this problem (and it seems like there are many) is going to be the first one to have a transmission failure at highway speeds? i currently have less than 5,000 miles on my rogue and don't trust it. *tr

Issues since may 2008. purchased new 08 nissan rogue sl awd. have had transmission problems including, lunging forward, rattling noises, jerking acceleration, and vibration on acceleration. continuous problems started under 35mph and now are present at highway speeds. nissan claims its might be normal and that there may be no solution to a problem they cant figure out. additionally they say it will not cause harm, however, if they do not know what it is, how can they say that?*tr

Within 1 month of taking delivery of a 2008 nissan rogue sl awd, we started hearing a faint rattle that was intermittent from the front end at approx. 1000 mi. when the noise became more regular and louder, took it to nissan to have them check it out. tech's heard the noise on 2nd trip there, but said nissan was aware of a problem but there was no fix as of yet and will let us know when there was a fix. two months later, no word from the dealer, we took it to another dealer and was told there they had experienced it and replaced a transmission for another rogue. they kept it for nearly 3 weeks and only replaced a transfer case--it turns out the transfer case only echoed the noise from the cvt/transmission. was told by the dealer that nissan requested them to return the car back to us with so-called added comfort that it is safe to drive until they find a fix because there haven't been any reported failures. noise is still there, and seems even louder than before. rattle noise is heard when foot is lifted off gas pedal at slow speeds below 35-40 mph. current mileage: 6350. *tr

I purchased a new 2008 nissan rogue sl awd in march of 08. it has 3100 miles on it. about a month ago i started hearing a rattle coming from what sounded like under the front of the car. i brought it into the dealer, they stated they could not hear anything on the test drive. as days went by the noise got louder. i brought it back again, this time i went with the tech. he heard it. after hours of looking at the car they decided, they needed to keep the car for a day or two to diagnose the issue. i got a rental and they had it for a day and a half. i started reading up on this on rogue forums and the are 100's over people having this same problem. svc mgr told me the problem was a problem with the transmission tnat nissan usa was aware of, and they were going to replace it. they thought the car was safe to drive since there had not been reported failures. so, they gave me the car back while i waited for the new tranny. a week later after not hearing from the dealer, i called and was told, as it turns out they were not going to replace the tranny because it has been done in other rogues and not fixed the issue. he stated, there is no fix, but nissan is working on the problem. when i voiced my concerns over the possibility of a failure on a highway at high speeds, he said..well there haven't been any yet!! as i stated there are many many rogue owners with this problem. something has to be done to force nissans hand. please help before there is a failure and someone is seriously injured or even killed. *tr
