Leakage to the head gasket in 2001 nissan sentra. according to my mechanic, this is a problem that occurs frequently in this vehicle due to inferior materials (aluminum) used in the materials used for the head gasket. it was noticed as i was driving my daughter to school and without warning, the car began to stall on a very busy street. i have had frequent preventable maintenance serviced on my car and this was not detectable until it is too late. my mechanic has since replaced the part and had to take apart half of the engine to do so which turned out to be very costly. it cost $1,500 which is almost a third of the car's current blue book value. *tr

This complaint has to do with the failure of the oil stick for the 2001 nissan sentra. i have owned the car for less than four years and have had two different oil sticks break in that time. the first time the oil stick was broken it was easily removed from the stem it rests in. on the latest break it has become lodged inside the stem. from what i can gather the standard fee most mechanics and dealerships range from $120.00 to $300.00 for the removal of the oil stick. the problem with the design of the stick is that it has a completely plastic handle that extends for a ways before joining with the metal stick. on both occasions the stick breaks well above where it joins with the metal component therefore making it impossible to remove with a magnet. this same problem has been documented numerous times online and i see it as a problem that nissan continues to sell this oil stick. from one online forum alone i came across over 60 reports of this happening with a nissan oil stick and almost all of them referred to either a 2000 or 2001 sentra. *tr

On a way home from a long trip (160 miles each way), my car suddenly stopped running on a highway. it started again and ran for another 30 miles or so and completely stopped running and did not restart. i had the car towed to a nearby garage where it was diagnosed to require a new cam position sensor. i was told to have the car towed to a nearby dealership because parts were not available. my family had to drive 200 miles to get me home. recently, service engine warning light came on during two long trips, but the light went away after replacing or tightening the gas cap. at the time of the event, no warning light was on. the dealership (high point) called later and said that the good news was that i did not have to pay for the replacement of three recalled parts, two of which caused the failure. the car was repaired and i drove 200 miles to get it home. i had no knowledge of the recall until this incident even though the recall campaign has started before we purchased the car at a nissan dealership as a used car on feb. 29, 2004. should this have been repaired before the purchase, or should we have been notified at the time of purchase, the problem would not have occurred. there were much expenses associated with towing, extra engine check as well as personal time spent on driving back and forth. i would like to know if this is in violation of a law. i recently spoke with a friend who owns a same model car. their dealership (service department, might be under the same ownership) told them that their car would need some sensors which may sometimes cause their service engine light to come on. yet no information of recall or potential severity of the problem have been given to them. this makes me wonder if some dealerships are not only neglecting recall campaign but also intentionally avoiding the recall repair. *tr

The oil dipstick handle breaks off and the balance of the dipstick is unable to be retrieved out of the dipstick cylinder unless the whole assembly is taken apart. this a very costly procedure ranging from $200-400. this has happened more than one time and it seems to me that nissan should provide a better quality dipstick that will not deteriorate and break from what i perceive as heat related damage. will they pay the costs for this repair? *tr

On june 24,2004 i had a crankshaft position sensor and emc foam removal recalls done on my 2001 nissan sentra. my vehicle has totally shut down with out any noise or warning while driving at least 4 times since december 2004. there were no accidents or injuries involved. i had taken my sentra to a nissan dealer for a diagnostic check on jan.31,2005 and they told me that the electronic control module did not show any codes and that it was a loose battery cable so they replaced it. less than 24 hours later the vehicle shut down again while driving and was taken back to the dealer asap. the service rep then told me he put his best technician to work on my vehicle and he found the crankshaft possition sensor was bad and it was replaced, but when i question the rep about the emc codes again he told me that he did not know what the problem was because my sentra was the first vehicle to do this with a recalled sensor. i am very concerned about the emc and this recalled sensor because this is a very serious safety issue. nothing was done by the nissan dealer to assure me that my vehicle will not do this again.

There was no accident, but when my husband took the car to get the oil changed the mechanic realized that the dipstick had broken off and had fallen into the tube. the mechanic also told my husband that there were other people that had the same problem. he said that it was a nissan fault on the car. i don't feel that we are responsible for paying to get it fixed since the dipstick is made of plastic and is so close to other heated engine parts. being so close to those other parts surely made the piece melt and later break off. *ak

While i was having my oil changed, the dipstick broke. nissan tells me that this will cost $366 to fix!!! after looking online, hundreds of other people have had the same problem. the guy at troncolli nissan in atlanta says that its basically tough luck because i should have paid the insane prices of a dealership oil change. nissan needs to recall this because it is obviously a problem, and if they fix them before they break it will be only a small cost. *ak

The top of the plastic dipstick in my 2001 nissan sentra broke off today and the dipstick itself slid down into the engine when this happened. from what i've seen, this is common with many other nissan sentras. i now need to find a replacement dipstick and was fortunately able to retrieve mine (even though it's now broken). however, some dealerships are trying to charge over $100 to retrieve the dipstick. this is a problem that needs to be recalled. also, my power windows are starting to stick and not go up and down. my car is barely 3 yrs old; this shouldn't be happening. there needs to be a recall on this too. *ak

My engine failed again while driving 70 mphs on the freeway, the very day after the car had been repaired for yet another defect sensor. it was a miracle i did not crash and kill anyone including myself. each and every time i have taken the car in, i have requested it be checked for a short in the wiring. each time i was told no. i later learned thar meant if it didn't show up on the computer, then they wouldn't look for it specifically. following the latest hazard, i got in nissan's face. nissan found a defect oxygen sensor this time. upon retesting the vehicle, the emc (the brain of the vehicle) was found to be defective. i was also told had i driven the car any longer, the air conditioning unit would have blown too. well, that explains all the lousy gas mileage this past year. so, here it is a week later and my vehicle remains in the shop with a back ordered emc with no available stock date in sight. i am renting a vehicle and am receiving very little assistance from nissan as to getting a rental vehicle in the meantime. i am quite concerned i have purchased a brand new spanking yellow lemon. i am quite concerned this vehicle, even with a new emc, will produce other defective sensors once the warranty has expired due to wear and tear from the old one. there are 45 sensors in the vehicle and only 5-10 have blown so far. i am quite certain others are close to failure too. i am just as concerned when both the nissan representative and the service manager told me this part has been on back order for a very long time as so many vehicles have endured this problme, that the vehicle has not yet been recalled.

My vehicle almost stalled on the freeway. a vehicle behind me had to swerve out of the way to avoid rear ending me. i was able to drive home at a slow pace. took my vehicle which is a 2001 nissan sentra gxe to the dealership to get a diagnostic check. the dealer informed me that my problem was the ecu system. they told me that the ecu system needed to be replaced. i searched online for any recalls for that particular vehicle model. there were 8 recalls for that years model. one of the recalls involved the ecu system. the problem with the recall was consistent to the problem i was having with my vehicle. i called nissan and informed them about the problem. they had already archived my vehicles vin number and i had to wait 24 hours for them to reach me to only advise me that there were no recalls for that vehicle. i know of one recall i received in 2004 about the headlights. many vehicles for that particular year have had the same problem with the same results. nissan does not want to take responsibility for their lemons. my vehicle only has 82000 miles on it. the ecu should not be bad. i am disappointed that there is a recall but for some reason it does not include my vehicle which was archived and it has not been 10 years. *tr

1&2) driving down the highway at 65 mph. the car suddenly starts to shudder and becomes hard to control. slowed down to 35 mph, still shuddering but not as much. stopped at a light, the car dies in the middle of the road. other cars veer around me. tried to start the car again immediately. doesn't start. wait 5 minutes in the middle of the road (it was raining and hailing at the time) and try to start again. this time it starts but idles very heavily. at this point the check engine soon light comes on. i tried to drive a few more blocks, and the car almost ended up dying in an intersection. at that point i pulled over right after rolling slowly out of the intersection and waited for a tow truck. the car would still start but i didn't trust it to drive it. 3) the mechanic tells me that the failure is the mass air flow sensor. the part is only available from a nissan dealership, and costs $488.19 plus a half hour of labor for installation!!! the new part also needs to be synched up with the car's computer because its different than the old part since nissan knows that the old part is no good. seems to me they should have initiated a recall if this is really the case. if you happen to know that any of this is false, i would very much appreciate knowing that. i don't know if this mechanic knows what he is talking about or not since this is the first time that i have used him. thanks. *nm

Hello, i own a 2001 nissan sentra. i've had the car for about 3.5 years and during that time it's had at least 4-5 recalls. most recently i took it in for the engine control module case holder recall in early march. this recall was to fix a problem that could result in the engine shutting off while driving. about two months later, i was on the road sitting at a red light, and all of the sudden the engine shut off. i though that maybe i had it in gear and i just released the clutch on accident, but it happened two more times on that trip. now i constanstly have the engine shutting down on me while driving or when sitting in idle. it has happened during turns in which it made it very very difficult to steer as the power steering is cut off. i did take the car in for inspection and they told me that it was a bad air flow meter. i declined to have it fixed as i thought that it should be covered under warranty. i even wrote a letter to nissan consumer affairs, and requested they fix my vehicle. however they declined. *ak

I have a 2001 nissan sentra and the service engine soon light has come on. i noticed from the nissan web site that there are three recalls that may result in the light coming on. my car falls within the vin range listed on nissan web site. so, i contacted one of the nissan dealers and was told that they could have my car inspected for $81 because the vehicle is not in the warranty any more. i contacted the nissan national consumer affairs office and was told the same thing. i don't understand why i have to pay the diagnostic fee if the car is on the recall list and may have a safety related defect. i am sure nissan (or nissan dealers) can make huge money by just diagnosing defective nissan vehicles. *ak

When i reported that the chirping/squeaking sound had returned (around the engine belts) to the service dept. at sheehy nissan in annapolis, the service person (mary) said that, if we can't recreate the sound the mechanic can't fix it. i proceeded to tell her to look at her data base for dec 2001, and she would see that it has been only a month and the sound is back, but intermitent, and the service manager-zeek knew what it was after they had changed out the (2) defective senor recall. she got impatient and repeated the same again to me, about recreating the sound. not being very educated or patient with customers, but rude, only served to upset me further about this vehicle and the complacent attitude i was up against. i thought, i would hate to think what would happen to me if one of those belts gave out. its my life, not mary' . i also told her when the belts make that sound, the engine hestitates. this made no difference to this service expert.*ak

Oil filter removal results in oil draining onto the exhaust system. lots of air pollution, smoke and smell upon start up. dealers have no remedy except to suggest use of lots of rags. nissan unresponsive. according to dealers, this is the only model so affected.*ak
