Defect SummaryNissan is recalling certain model year 2004-2006 armada, titan, infiniti qx56 and model year 2005-2006 frontier, pathfinder and xterra vehicles. the intelligent power distribution module (ipdm) assembly contains an engine control module (ecm) relay that has a diode for electrical current noise reduction. the ecm relay may allow silicon vapor to form and, over time, the silicon evaporates from the diode molding which causes silicon oxide to develop on the ecm relay contact due to arcing.
Consequence SummaryThis could cause engine stalling increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the ecm relay inside the ipdm assembly. this service will be performed free of charge. the safety recall is expected to begin during december 2010. owners may contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

I was traveling towing a 33 ft camper. usually tow at about 62 mph. all of a sudden the truck cuts out then turns back on and bucks. my lights on my dash light up like a color blinking christmas tree. my speedometer goes all the way to 140 mph, my rpms max out, my fuel gauge goes up and down along with the temp gauge. furthermore all the gauges and warning lights flash or move in no form or fashion. steering gets stiff along with the brakes because the truck shuts off. i controlled the truck to avoid crashing in between the on and off periods. this happened several times. thought it was wiring from camper or brake controller. however, over the last few weeks from about mid sept it has progressively gotten worse. now i can't go out of the driveway before the truck starts acting up. there is a bad accident waiting to happen. in my past experience with nissan is they are reluctant to say anything is wrong and to fix things. i have had enough go wrong with my truck from brakes, electrical, and rear end unit. just last weekend 20 oct 12 i took the truck on about a 15 mile round trip and it acted up again. between july and sept 2012 the truck would start the shut completely off in parked position. it still does that now too. the truck is now parked until i figure what is the problem. i don't have mega bucks to fix it! someone said nissan has a computer recall but i have not been notified and i contacted a dealer but they have not called back. its been 3 days now. they said the description i gave them matches the recall?????????? *tr

Don't know if it's been reported, but alot of people are having issues with the nissan titans (many years) with the exhaust manifolds cracking. i have a 2004 and both of them have been cracked for almost 4 years now. i contacted nissan, they suggested to contact nissan corporate, and pretty much told me i was out of luck. the manifolds are over $850 each, and both of mine are severely cracked, causing engine, emission, and safety/health problems. i have had to replace many o2 sensors, cat's, and mufflers, due to burning up, and have to drive with all my windows down and short trips due to the exhaust filling the cab of the truck. something needs to be done, as this is not only an issue, but a major flaw in the design of the truck. i have had checked out at a local shop, and their exact words were there is absolutely no flex in the exhaust, so when the engine shifts from driving and revving, the manifolds are the weakest point and therefore crack. something seriously needs to be done or looked into. many nissan titan forums hundreds of people are complaining about the same issue. usually only one is cracked, but i have both cracked. if you need a vehicle to inspect, you can look at mine. i even had the exhaust upgraded to bigger exhaust in hopes of relieving some of the pressure, so it doesn't leak all out under the hood, and that has helped some, but this is seriously an issue with the design and useability of these nissan titan trucks. and, i don't know about alot of people, but i can't afford to spend over $1600 in just 2 parts, plus all the other required parts, when i can barely afford to pay the bank on the truck. *tr

2004 nissan titan vin 1n6aa07bx4n563653 at 90k miles the exhaust manifolds cracked on my 2004 nissan titan. nissan covers this under warranty until 80k miles for the exhaust system. the truck has had no modification and will not pass state emissions and gets horrible gas mileage due to this. now at 104 k i have visited multiple dealers and they agree this is common issue with the titan's and the crack will make a 5 year old truck not pass state emissions. to replace the exhaust manifold with stock parts is $1200; which frustrates me since this is a faulty design which causes the manifolds to move differently then the engine mounts allow the engine to.
10/05/201170200
Car into dealer for service. found two cracked manifolds on both sides of the engine resulting in excessive noise and exhaust gasses to be released into the cab. both sides need full replacement at nearly $1,200 per side. this is ridiculous on a vehicle with only 70k miles on the clock.
07/23/201173000
While traveling to go on a 13 hour drive, all of our engine lights came on and the truck became sluggish. we had truck towed and got a call from dealership saying what happen was muffler/exhaust unit fell off during travel and the unit remaining got so hot it burned out entire part of truck including, ecu, rear right harness, and 3 other things. cost to fix over $3,000. after paying hefty bill shop manager said this was the 5th titan in our small town he had same issue with and that he agrees this is the worst place for a unit on a truck and manufacturer should of put other location. i then filed a complaint with nissan consumer affairs. they acted like they cared and then 3 weeks later they denied helping me at all saying it was out of warranty. i did research on line and lots of people are having same issue. this is a huge safey concern and i think needs to be recalled and i need to be reimbursed for my repairs. i find it odd that the exhaust manifold also cracked on the truck on the right and left side and nissan covers that until 80,000 miles.

Ticking noise discovered when starting the truck. sounds seems to come from lower engine compartment or from front wheel-wells. suspected a leaking exhaust pipe. took truck to nissan dealership and was informed the exhaust manifolds (left and right) were both cracked. estimated cost was $2100. advised by nissan technician to just leave it alone as the only result of this problem was the ticking noise and a little worse mileage than usual. over the last year, several instances of engine fumes causing passengers to roll windows down. suspect the fumes are coming from the manifolds since no other exhaust leaks have been found.

Failure of cracked manifold exhaust with built in catalytic converter. i have cracked 3 manifold exhaust due to the fact that nissan did not install flex pipes in their exhaust system. it is happening on all the titan trucks...look at the forums and my dealer has confirmed it. exhaust is leaking into the cab area. it cost over $900 to just repair the part. they will not fix it! it is leaking straight exhaust fumes.

I have an '04 nissan titan crew cab truck. in earlier part of '09, while driving on the hwy, my engine stalled and went out. basically i was just rolling on the hwy unaware that the engine went out. i realized my engine went out when i couldn't accelerate or decelerate, and my steering was difficult to handle. the engine wouldn't start after that. it sounded like it would crank, but wouldn't turn, and as if it wasn't getting fuel. several mechanics couldn't figure out the issue until, i later learned by reading up on nissan forum online, of similar cases, that it was an ipdm failure. i replaced this part and it worked again. now, its jan. 2010, and it went out on me again. this time, luckily i was not driving on the hwy, i was parked and the engine wouldn't start. *tr

Only 65,000 miles on my truck and no modifications. right rear seal leaking, pinion seal is shot and front left axle needs to be replaced. nothing covered under warranty. i am looking at a $3,000 repair bill on a 4 year old truck that has never been off road and doesn't have high miles. my exhaust manifold also cracked at about 60000 miles. this was able to be replaced under warranty. *tr

I was driving between 65 & 70 mph and the engine went into fail safe mode and basically ran at idle speed (10 miles per hour). i parked the truck, turned off engine, restarted, it remained in idle speed only, turned off engine and left off for about 15 minutes - it started and ran normal. dealer replaced ecm. this occurred in may 2007 and then my son was driving today april 2, 2008 at about 45 mph and engine just cut off completely (now at the dealer). this is high risk - imagine turning across a lane of traffic and the engine quitting or pulling onto the expressway and trying to get up to speed and engine quitting. *tr

The vehicle in question is a 2004 nissan titan with approx. 36,000 miles of use on the vehicle. on several uses i heard 'clunking' noises from under the vehicle. on the last time before taking the vehicle to the dealer, the abs warning light illuminated and the 'clunking' noise was like a grinding noise also. the dealer told me the differential had failed and needed to be replaced. this part is an extremely important part of the vehicles ability to operate safely. this part failed with only 36,000 miles on it. clearly it is a defective product and action to force the manufacturer to correct the problem to prevent serious injuries to others is required. the dealer also stated that the radiator had failed and replaced it without authorization. when questioned about this the dealer stated it was a crack inthe seam.

Since purchasing my truck in august of 2004 i have experienced several brake related issues. i've taken the truck to the same dealer for service on each failure/issue. the break issues experienced have been brake lights turning on, brakes shuddering, the truck not braking properly, brakes not working until the pedal was almost completely pressed. recently the truck failed to stop resulting in a rear end collision. the dealer has replaced/resurfaced rotors, brake pads and replaced sensors during the past year and a half. however, i continue to experience issue after issue regarding the brakes. i have had other defects as well, but the brake issues have been the primary issue. *nm

I was driving a 2004 nissan titan approximately 35 mph. the motor cut off and i coasted to a stop. the motor restarted after a few minutes and i attempted to get to a repair shop. after driving approx 3 miles, the motor cut off again. i was able to restart the engine after a few minutes and drove approx 1 mile to a repair shop. after leaving the repair shop, i called two nissan dealers and both said that it sounded like a recall that nissan had planned for early dec 2010. one of them suggested that i have the repair shop run a diagonistic to see if anything showed as a problem. if nothing showed then it was probably relatede to the scheduled recall. i contacted the repair shop and relayed the info. after running the diagonistic, i was told that there were no warnings. i have major concerns about driving a vehicle with an engine that will just cut off for no apparent reason. when i asked the two dealers what could be done, i was told not much since the recall isn't due to go into effect until dec and that they (the dealers) had been instructed to not do anything until dec. it appears that nissan is aware of the problem but chooses to ignore the potential consequences.

2004 titan. connection failed at the flanges welded to the exhaust pipe and the muffler extension at the right rear wheel area. the exhaust pipe and the muffler extension are in good condition. the failure was confined to the flange attachments. failure resulted in hot air/gases melting a critical wire harness that is attached along the frame beam to carry electrics to the rear of vehicle. the right rear wheel speed sensor was damaged. the wires shorted, causing the failure of underhood electrical componnts. immediate consequence was the engine shut down with loss of power steering and power brakes and all other components relying on power from the alternator. the experienced driver was able to coast the vehicle to a stop along a busy interstate highway. long range consequences were the replacement of the titan's wire bundles and electronic components at considerable cost. nissan has not, to date, explained why this simple connection failed, why a wire harness was located close to this heat source, why the wire harness was not protected against heat damage, why the electrical damage was not limited by a fuse, why titan owners were not notified of this potential catastrophic problem and why nissan dealers did not inspect and notifiy titan owners of this issue during other routine maintenance at their facilities.

2004 nissan titan - know issue with exhaust manifolds that leak. this leak or crack in the exhaust manifold causes the engine computer to run full rich all the time. this creates an unsafe condition inside the cab of the vehicle with noxious exhaust fumes and health concerns. not to mention the fuel mileage is almost cut in half as i have calculated. my truck will be on it's third set of manifolds. the first two sets of repacements were covered under the federal emissions warrant up to 80k miles but that has expired at this point. nissan is aware of this issue and from information i have gathered the have updated the design of the manifolds. i might add that the catatytic converters are directly connected to these manifolds. i cannot stress enough the safety concerns with exhaust fumes constantly entering inside ths cab - i drive to work with headaches and nausea and burning eyes every day!

I purchased my 2004 nissan titan in april 2010, i took the vehicle in for service on may 6, 2010 and was told my exhaust manifolds are leaking. the warranty is 8 yr/ 80k, i have 82k on my titan. the exhaust fumes leak into the cab causing nausea and dizziness. this is a safety issue. the dealer won't replace them, because they are out of warranty. the replacement cost is $2000.00

Exhaust manifold warps after about 80k miles, creating an exhaust leak. if it develops before the 80k mile emissions warranty, it will be covered. most develop after the warranty. i own an '04 and an '05 nissan titan. the '05 exhaust leak was fixed at 78k miles with 1 new exhaust manifold and some crossover piping. the '04 started at 88k miles and the dealership has not helped with the problem with the exception of estimating $1300 to repair. *tr

Heard exhaust leak in engine at about 85,000 miles. manifold leak was confirmed at 101,000 when brought in for a transmission issue. not covered under warranty. reviewed many technical forums where the exhaust manifold is being reported as cracked on countless titans. this is a manufacturer's defect, and the cost should not be relayed to the consumer at a significant dollar amount. *tr

My 2004 nissan titan rear diff seals leak and has caused a brake failure. i pulled out of my driveway and was driving down the road when all of a sudden my rear end locks up. it took a few moments to get her going again in reverse. i jacked it up and removed the tires and removed the rotors. the pad on the emergency brake system fail off. it still had plenty of pad left on it. my father looked at it and noticed the fluid leaking from my rear end. he told me that probably caused the failure due to the contamination. replaced the pad and added some oiled to the rear end. i have researched this issue online and found numerous complaints about this and other brake failures also. there should be a recall for this issue. my exhaust manifold leaks also. i am replacing it too. this is a known issue with the titans. this may be of more concern with the epa. they have been know to crack. *tr

I have had an odd exhaust sound from my nissan titan for over 18 months. when i finally took it into the dealer both exhaust manifolds were cracked and repairs cost $1400.00. i was told a the dealer and at several muffler shops that this is a very common defect due the cast nature of the manifold and the excessive weight of the catalytic converter welded onto the manifold. the replacement part were a new design and the dealer said they will not crack. since my truck had 105,000 miles on it when the service was done there is no warranty coverage. i feel that this is a design flaw with the 2004 and 2005 nissan titan pickups and the cost of repairs should be borne by nissan and not by the consumer. i am hoping that there will be a class action suite filed on the consumer's behalf either by an individual, the state or the federal government. *tr

The vehicle ( a 2004 nissan titan) has 30 thousand plus miles, carefully maintained (no salt) and was pulling a 7500 pound boat on pa i-79 when it lost all power, including all lights (including rear and hazard) .this resulted in a fire which totally disabled the entire vehicle. the tail pipe had fallen off and burned dozens of electrical wires. this manufacturing defect has been reported numerous times on the net and to dealers. it should strongly be noted that had the same incident occurred on ny i-90 where there is no safe place to pull off or at night anywhere, many lives would have been lost. this defect must receive immediate attention. nissan has refused to acknowledge the defect or pay for repairs. *tr

The tailpipe fell off of my truck. resulting in the hot exhaust to be vented onto a rear wiring harness and thus melting it. along with the melted wiring harnesses, the ecm and mass airflow sensor were shorted out and need to be replaced. this will be over $2000 to fix and will be paid for straight out of my pocket. the warranty does not cover exhaust because it supposedly is a regularly maintained part. this truck is a 2wd model with 305/50x20 wheels/tires , so it obviously is not used for off-road purposes nor has it been used to tow anything. when the tailpipe broke, the truck was being driven down a smooth black top highway and nothing was ran over in the road such as an animal or debris that would cause the tailpipe to fall off. i bought this truck used but with only 30k miles on it and only drove it 1500 miles since purchasing it. *tr

 1. travel down dirt roads over a period of six months. 2. tail pipe fell off (on this model 4x4 off road package the tail pipe isn't welded to the muffler) total vehicle failure of all electronic components as the wiring harness melts due to exhaust being vented directly on wiring harness also melts dust cover for shock and abs sensor to axle housing. 3. replace tail pipe, shock, abs sensor, wiring harness and all electronic components. *jb
