The rear differential has been whining since 63,000 miles and last weekend the whining became howling and then clunking. my mechanic says something inside the differential is broken.

Driving about 40 mph, i heard a loud pop coming from the rear end of the truck. now whenever i decelerate, a whining noise is heard from the differential. took the truck to the nissan dealer in irvine, ca and they want to replace the rear differential at a cost of $2500.00. *tr

I was using my four wheel drive when i noticed a loud clunk and found that my axle had popped out of the front differential. i am among over 1000s of titan owners with this same issue that nissan knows about and has caused multiple failures in our trucks. it also caused a failure in mine. the have known about this issue for years now and changed there part in 07 from the original number 38500-8s102 to the new product number 38500-8s11b truck is a nissan titan 2004 se king cab 4wd. *tr

Truck started making loud grinding sound when letting off accelerator and coasting. i was advised by my mechanic to replace the entire rear end with a brand new one from nissan because they had modified it. obviously they new it was a problem. $2500.00 repair. glad the drive shaft did not lock up on the interstate.

I engaged my front differential (4x4) and proceeded to put drivetrain in reverse and while backing up the passenger side front axle popped out of the differential, i was not pulling anything so i was not under any load whatsoever.

Transmission cooler hose leak caused transmission failure. there was a service bulletin on this, but i never saw it or was made aware of it until it happened and i googled it. the spring clamp fail. this should be a recall because something as simple as replacing the 2 spring clamps with screw clamps would save a ruined transmission. seams to be a big issue and could cause fatality if failure happens on interstate. *tr

While replacing lifetime warrantied suspension which was not honored by nissan or tenneco, i found the rear pinion seal to be leaking severely, and rear axle seal leaking in wheel assembly. possible source of ticking noise from differential, which until then i thought were exhaust heat shields. this condition could cause catastrophic drivetrain failure while vehicle is in motion. the fluid leaking from axle seal can reduce effectiveness of braking components. other owners have described inadequate engineering & possible use of substandard differential materials & components along with axle vent assemblies which could create internal pressure conditions that could cause seals to fail. *tr

The rear axle hub seals leaked after the 1st and only pulling ever done with my 2004 (4 x 2) se titan p/p. my vehicle is equipped with big tow pkg. dealer replaced the entire rear axle. no pulling or towing done since replacement by dealer svc. done 12/24/2008 at 85,417 miles. however, a right/passenger seal leak noticed on 08/29/2012 at 152,247 miles. i was told by the regional warranty service manager that the issue had been resolved with an upgraded better axle system which would resolve the problem when the rear end was replaced. the rear axle diff. fluid leak is causing periodic braking issues and noises. i am very concerned about safe braking, especially when driving the vehicle in wet weather. needs to be addressed as a safety issue. *tr

Left rear axle seal leaking oil and accumulates on brake rotor cover. if not corrected , could lead to failure of entire drive assembly due to absence of fluid.

I first heard a whine or howl coming from the rear end 2 years ago, when i took it to the dealership, they told me i need a complete rear end assembly at the cost of 4000$. i could not afford that, and they said you couldn't rebuild the rear end, because nissan wouldn't release the parts for it. i drove on it for 2 years before it went out on me on the 21st of april, 2012. ive read up on hundreds of complaints, about the rear ends on nissan titans going out, and nissan not having a recall.

Had the rearend go out 91000 miles had nissan rebuild then went out again at 94000 miles nissan didn't stand behind their warranty now still sitting in the driveway till find a good salvage one

Differential started to wine at about 58,000 miles. noticed that the right rear-end of diff is leaking oil. reported it to dealer, but they said nothing is wrong, do not hear anything, no idea what it is. concerned that the oil may end up on the rear brake rotors in which case rear brake failure may occur. rear end starting to fail now at 72,000

Rear diff started with small wine noise in am on wat to work - 11.6 miles. went to lunch - another 6 miles - noise a little louder - not bad - just a little louder. go home in evening - made it another 6 miles and noise sounded like some one was crashing into the back of the truck as the back end locked up and sent me skidding across the road. luckily no one was in the lane next me!! failure according to dealer was from the 'vent' tube being clogged and causing it overheat and blow the seals... so, almost a catatrophic accident if was on highway, and now 3500 dollars to fix because of a 5 dollar check valve! this is insane. google around for the titan rear diff, and i am not the only one out there!!!!

The seal on the drivers side rear failed, began to leak oil all over the inside of the rim and the brakes. this was within a few miles after having had a dealership press a new bearing onto the axle and occurred within an hour of the vehicle having been picked up from the shop. dealership admits to having seen an issue with the rear differential and knowing that it would leak but having decided to not inform the customer about the issue.

I have now only owned this truck for one year. i am only the second owner. i have had multiple drive train issues now with this truck and it is only currently at 75,000 miles as of 11/20/2011. 04/22/11 turned a corner from a four way stop to hear a light grinding noise that turned to a heavy clunk and tire hop. took it to a local trusted auto repair tech to find that my e-locker deteriorated and literally grenaded my whole carrier assembly. the only fix according to nissan is to replace the whole rear differential as in new case fully assembled w/ rotors and all. local shop did research and said this is a common issue they have a lot and nissan does not sell individual parts to replace. local shop had to build whole new custom rear end from seals in w/ a detroit true trac mechanical locker. at the same time shortly after found gear oil in driveway from front pumpkin to find drivers side c-clip broke and axle shaft is not engaging (in other words no dependable 4wd) had that all fixed in 05/2011 and seemed okay never had used the 4wd. now 11/19/11 went to go find a christmas tree and turned on the 4wd again just in case. once again a broken c-clip out of nowhere. i have now had two broken c-clips within about 6 months of each other w/o 4wd being used. bought the truck for $16k and have now put in almost another $4k in front and rear end repairs. nissan is losing a lot of customers by not owning up to their mistakes and design flaws.

Right side axle is leaking fluid to rear disk brake. to fix one side is 2200. after searching on titan forums, discovered this to be a defect with this truck. this is a truck that had synthetic diff oil and never towed, yet has such major failure so soon? this is a serious safety issue.
11/08/201178000
Discovered the driver's side rear axle oil seal leaking. vehicle maintenance has been accomplished in accordance with nissan maintenance schedules. discovered nissan technical service bulletin (tsb)ntb10-032 stating entire axle shaft assembly (axle, new retainer, axle bearing, oil seal, bearing cage, and abs rotor) be replaced on 2004-2008 models when oil leaks are discovered to correct the problem. the tsb did not elaborate why the entire assembly is to be replaced. it can only be assumed that all parts of the assembly are considred defective and require replacement. i presented the tsb to my nissan service department and they said they only need to replace the oil seal, axle bearing, and spacer contrary to the prescibed service procedure in the tsb. within 200 miles of replacement, the new oil seal leaks indicating the cause of the seal failure has not been resolved. unresolved axle seal leaks will result in axle failure and brake failures when pads are soaked by gear oil leaks.

I was driving on the freeway where the speed limit is 65 mph. i was going that speed when, what i thought was my drive shaft, basically exploded and fell apart whilst i was in motion. i have kept up one all mandatory and basic maintenance work and have never had a problem with it before. parts flew out from all around my truck and it slammed into a complete stop as if i had made impact into something. passing vehicles had to stay clear of the debris an i had to push my truck into the emergency lane. highway patrol asked if i was alright and i stated to have already had a tow truck on its way. when my truck was towed to the shop they said the rear end actually gave way and broke, including the drive shaft which snapped into two pieces, one of which was launched into traffic. luckily no other vehicles were damaged nor people hurt. the mechanics said they've been in business for 57 years and i was lucky to have come out of that the way i did, because in most cases the truck would have flipped and rolled. the damages were extensive and extreme for something i had no control over. the shop informed me that this was nothing to do with the way i was driving it or anything i could have done, and they found it weird that it happened the way it did. very dangerous and near traumatizing. i was unable to select the correct components above so i just wanted to be clear that it had everything to do with my drive shaft, rear differential, and power line.

Car into dealer for service. found two cracked manifolds on both sides of the engine resulting in excessive noise and exhaust gasses to be released into the cab. both sides need full replacement at nearly $1,200 per side. this is ridiculous on a vehicle with only 70k miles on the clock.

Within a 5 mile range the vehicle started to whine, then clank, then lock-up. emergency brakes failed and rear differential failed... vehicle was undriveable. this vehicle just hit 100,000 miles. repair is > 1/5th of vehicle value. this is a very common failure in 2004 nissan titans. very dangerous - especially if towing a trailer (which is what this vehicle is advertised to do)

Rear axle oil leak requiring replacement of breather and right rear axle at 45,385 miles. reoccurred 9-26-11 at 54,718 miles. internet sites indicate this is a common recurrence and the part was subsequently redesigned. nissan refuse to stand by their quality and hide behind the warranty terms for a design failure.

Tl - the contact owns a 2004 nissan titan. the contact stated that while driving 60 mph the vehicle started to make a loud noise and it became hard to drive. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the rear differential was defective and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offered any assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 83,000. pm

The rear axle seals in my 2004 nissan titan 5.6l se started leaking. the current mileage is 89,000. the seals are extremely hard to find. when replacing the axal seals you also have to replace the spacers and the bearrings. not only that but the fluid from the leak has got onto the brake pads and rotor. it started leaking terribly in only a matter of a few days.

Changed engine oil over july 4th 2011 weekend and noticed oil all over transfer case. upon further inspection found two bolts missing from top of transfer case. drained transfer case fluid to wich only a quarter of a quart was left and was extremely black with metal fragments in it. tried to match bolts for missing ones and filled transfer case with fresh fluid.

I noticed a build up of fluid on my driverside break rear rotor and hub. when i took it to the shop, they told me that both rear seals were leaking onto my brakes and hubs. i took it in to get it fixed and was quoted $700. they then noticed that a tsb just came out that said that just the seals cannot be replaced. that they now are required to replace both axles, bearings, seals, etc to fix the problem, and would be $2600. they explained that if i didn't get it fixed my brakes would malfunction because of the of the thick build up of oil, and ultimately, there would be a catastrophic failure of the rear axle because of the fluid loss. rendering the vehicle useless, or cause of an accident if it happened while driving.

Front right tire was wearing irregularly and was informed at tire store that wheel hub may be worn and causing the problem. took the vehicle to the nissan dealership and not only was wheel bearing assembly identified as an issue but was informed that front differential needed replacement (front axel pulling out from front differential) at cost of $1755 (additional to the $373 to replace the front wheel hub assembly). the rear differential on this vehicle had already been replaced under warranty in april'08 (based on clicking noise while driving) which triggered me to research this defect on the internet and nhtsa web site and ask the dealer about other similar failures seen. i have found numerous issues with the front and rear differentials reported on both 2004 and 2005 titans due to what appears to be a faulty design that was later changed on the 2006 model year. i called nissan customer affairs to open a request for support and was informed based on years of service and mileage they would denied supporting this complaint, i escalated to the next level of management and was again denied any support. clearly there is an issue with the differentials on the 2004 titan that needs to be investigated since this should not be considered normal wear and tear to replace both differentials on the same vehicle given normal highway passenger driving (no off road, no towing).

Pass rear axle seal blew out and leaked differential fluid. differential fluid leaking on rear brake rotors which could cause brake failure, which was a major safety concern to me. at time of failure no suspension modifications had been done to vehicle. also, the rear differential oil will slowly leak and cause the rear differential to lose fluid and fail. as this seemed to be a very common problem with the nissan titan, nissan should address this issue and offer a permanent fix so we would not be faced with the safety issue in the future.

I have a 2004 nissan titan,it has blown out 2 rear differentials.one was at 93,000 miles repair cost 2,900 dollars, and the other at 148,00 miles repair costs 2,600 dollars.the truck goes quickly from drivable to dangerous to drive.from research there is a defect in the differential venting design.you would think they should be responsible for at least the 2nd one.

It was around 3:30 pm and i was just getting off of school. there was a good amount of snow on the ground so i decided to put it into 4 wheel drive. i drove for about 4 miles to get onto interstate 69. i started to accelerate and as soon as i got up to around 45mph, i heard a loud bang from the front end. the truck jerked to the left, i grabbed the steering wheel with both hands preventing from slamming into a semi in the lane beside me. luckily i didn't get hurt. i know it is the differentials are completely trashed. i have an appointment at the nissan dealership to get it diagnosed. i believe that i should not have to pay for the damage since this has been a major problem in the titans. i bought a nissan because i heard they were very reliable, and the company is willing to help. i sure do hope they help me out with this major defect in my truck. i really hope that this becomes a recall before someone really gets hurt, or even worse, killed.

I was at a stop light and as i took off getting my truck up to 15-20 mph i noticed a whining sound. it sounded as if the sound was in the rear of the truck. come to find out that the rear differential was shot. the ring and pinion failed in the truck and shards of metal effected the gears as well.
01/14/201187000
The rear axel shaft starts to leak due to seal failure but is actually due to spider gear failure causing excessive pressure build up causing the seals to fail. there are over 1000 recoded instances on the internet and supposedly one causing a serious accident with injuries. on calling 3 different dealers all were aware of the issue but nothing is covered past the 3 yr 36,000 mile warranty. all dealers service centers stated they have not seen this failure prior to that frequency.
08/20/2010106000
At around 106,00 miles the rear driver's side axle seal blew out with enough force to destroy abs sensor and parking brake assembly. 2,000 miles later passenger side rear seal blew out and rear differential totally locked up. this is apparently a known defect that nissan simply won't acknowledge. this repair ended up costing around $4,100 to repair at my expense, on top of the $900 paid previously to repair original seal failure.

Driving when i heard noises from back of truck 2004 nissan titan stopped and checked , called a tow truck and found out i had blew rear axle seal and the pin from the rear end and now i need to replace the whole rear end called nissan they said 2006 was corrected and to look for aluminum cover ones because the steel cover ones were the old version. yes there are 339 complaints on here for powertrain issues for 2004 titan. thanks

Axle seals are leaking that can cause improper rear braking. nissan hasnt addressed the issue as a recall but several issues has been noted.

The rear axle seals were replaced with oem 2 years ago. they are now leaking again allowing gear lube to run down the tubes onto the rear brakes and tires. rendering the rear brakes and parking brakes useless and unsafe to drive. this makes the parking brake useless putting the whole trucks weight constantly on the park pin of the transmission. this rear brake loss caused brake fade of the front brake coming off an interstate nearly rear ending another vehicle. i saw on the forums and your own complaint search that it is a very common and dangerous issue and needs to be resolved. the problem must lay in the axles and not the seal themselves to be going so often. i tow sometimes and this is my daily driver so i must fix the problem asap. i have to replace brakes and rotors all the way around along with parking shoes axle seals and bearing retainers. this is very expensive.

2004 nissan titan se 4x4 has a known rear differential problem which leads to failure. rear differential is leaking onto brakes/rotor. my vehicle has never towed anything and only has 58,000 miles. nissan dealer says past warranty but admit known problem. i was told to contact nissan directly. differential fluid has metal in it. unsafe conditions on all early models of this truck and nissan is avoiding the issue they need to have an immediate recall before someone is killed.

The rear universal joint has failed. i took to the vehicle to a mechanic for inspection on or about 9/2/10 and i was told that the u-joint had 3 big peices of metal laying in the bootom of the housing. i then had the vehicle towed to hubler nissan in indianapolis, in and the service department confirmed the previous findings. hubler stated that they would have to replace the complete rear axle. the approx. cost would be $2,500-$3,000.

The events leading up to my front end axle failure was due to slight use of the 4wd in mild snow conditions the first time. i had it repaired by a factory nissan authorized dealer and had the same problem occur less than 30,000 miles later. nissan is saying its not their fault but i was not abusing the 4wd simply just using it. basically the front left axle breaks a clip and the axle shaft going into the differential slides down. over time unnoticed i'm sure this could be detremental to the front end components until a catastrophic steering/wheel failure. i will be trying to contact nissan to get their story of why this keeps occuring.

I have just had the rear differential fail on my 2004 nissan titan at 95k miles. the truck had been used for towing but only about 5 times a year. it has a tow package and most of the miles on it are highway miles.

Driver and passinger side rear axel seals leaking causing fluid to get on to brake rotors
05/15/201068000
Hello. i recently bought a 2004 nissan titan. when having the vehicle saftied, we noticed that one of the rear axil seals on the passangers side were leaking. the seal looked to have lead a fairly large amout of oil that was saturating the rim and also soaked the emergency break on the passenger side. after looking at the car fax in noticed that this same vehicle had a rear axil seal replace in january. i cannot be certian this seal was the same seal as the one in january. the vehicle has 68000 miles on it. after doing some research on titan talk.com i noticed that this is a common problem from this truck. i am not sure if anything can be done about it but i do feel like this could turn into a safety issue considering not only that this seems to be a common problem, but that when this problem does occure, it saturates the rims, tires and breaks with oil.

 1. there were no specific events leading up to the failure. 2. the c-clip that held my driver's side axle in the front differential of my 2004 4x4 nissan titan broke, causing the front differential to fail. i noticed a large puddle under the truck one evening and upon inspection, found that the axle had shifted 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch outside of the differential housing. the leak was coming from the ruined side seal caused by the c clip breaking. 3. i filled the differential up with new oil to avoid burning up the ring and pinion (didn't know it was already bad at the time) so that i could get the truck to the dealership. once the problem was diagnosed, i was told the repair would be $1987. i checked around and no other automotive repair shop could fix this b/c they could not get the parts. apparently the front differential for my truck is captivated which means only the dealerships can get them. to my understanding, it seems kind of like a monopoly on the parts.

Was in 4 wheel drive tried to make a left hand turn, truck basically stopped in middle of a busy road until i heard a poping then was able to turn but 4 wheel drive failed. now there are problems with my power train and front differential. went to a garage they say missing a clamp, but dealership says no clamp and nothing wrong that it works fine. it most certainly does not work fine

Axel seal leak on a long 2,500 vacation drive that could have caused a bad accident if all the gear oil would have been lost. luck it was discovered soon enough that i could fill the diff back up. seals have been replaced previously as well as the whole axel on a different occasion. these axel and axel seal problems may cause a deadly accident one day. my truck only has 54,000 miles on it. *tr

Took 2004 nissan titan pickup with 53,479 miles to dealership for oil change and service under recall ntb 352 w93 service manual reference pb081. at completion of work service manager mentioned that rear axle seal service at a cost of approximately 500.00 should be considered. i did not know at the time that the service should have been covered under warranty. later on 10/14/2009 took vehicle in for oil change now with mileage over 60k service manager recommended the axle seal service at the cost mentioned above. at 66974 miles i took the truck in to the dealership and i scheduled the axle service on 12/14/09 when slip and abs warning lights turned on, the dealership ordered parts. further research by me found that this service should have been performed at no cost under 60k warranty period. i believe the dealerships service manager waited until my vehicle was over 60k and therefore out of warranty. *tr

My 2004 nissan titan rear diff seals leak and has caused a brake failure. i pulled out of my driveway and was driving down the road when all of a sudden my rear end locks up. it took a few moments to get her going again in reverse. i jacked it up and removed the tires and removed the rotors. the pad on the emergency brake system fail off. it still had plenty of pad left on it. my father looked at it and noticed the fluid leaking from my rear end. he told me that probably caused the failure due to the contamination. replaced the pad and added some oiled to the rear end. i have researched this issue online and found numerous complaints about this and other brake failures also. there should be a recall for this issue. my exhaust manifold leaks also. i am replacing it too. this is a known issue with the titans. this may be of more concern with the epa. they have been know to crack. *tr

2004 nissan titan - 50,000k miles. noticed a rear seal leaking onto by tires and on my brakes from the rear differential. there is a loud grinding sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. unit has not failed as of date but service dept says any day it will. grenada nissan offered to replace because of known issues, but nissan headquarters has not honored warranty to date, b/c it is 6 months too late. will not honor warranty. concerned if it fails at intersection or going down road an accident with bodily injury can occur. the fluid on brakes may also cause slippage while braking. very dangerous. nissan quoted repair near 3500$. has been known issue with nissan and nhtsa. over 70 complaints filed, luckily no injury todate. this failure is a known issue with nissan na, and have yet to fix flaw on this vehicle. please beware that this is a safety issue to not only the vehicle's driver and passenger, but to others on the road as well. *tr

2004 nissan titan rear axle seal failure. first notice oil leaking from both axle seals when changing shocks at 41,000 miles. brought to dealer was told axle seals had failed and were going to be replaced under warranty, at 44,400 miles went to get inspection sticker and the parking brake failed, upon further investigating this was due to the fact that the seals had failed again and slung oil all over the rear brake system i would think this is a huge safety issue. this time they fixed the seals but i was told that they were failing due to the fact of a problem with the axle, now i am over the 5 year warranty and there telling me it my not be covered still waiting to hear. this seems to be a common problem and should be recalled to be fixed at nissans expense. one time this is going to happen and someone's brake are going to fail from the oil and cause a serious accident resulting in injury or death! something need to be done before its to late. *tr

Rear wheel seals continue to leak even after being replaced, differential and axle have too much play in the pumpkin area, causing the seals to break. the dealer had my truck for (14) days doing absolutely nothing after disassembling the differential due to a conflict between them and my extended warranty on who was going to pay for the ($3,000.00) rear. this has left me in limbo so i contacted the manufacturer to discuss the modified rear that the dealer told me that the manufacturer had to resolve the problem. i am currently waiting to hear back from the manufacturer. they know about the problem on these 2004 titans and have a modified replacement rear, then why is there not a recall?shouldn't the manufacturer be responsible and have decency to correct their problem free of charge to the consumer? *tr

My 2004 nissan titan recently started leaking gear oil from both axles in the rear. concurrently my brake pads starting absorbing the oil which in turn ruined my rotors, brake pads, and now is costing me a pretty penny to get it fixed. my mechanic said the local auto parts stores do not carry these bearings and seals and therefore must contact the original dealer to order them. after reading and following up on the additional complaints by many other titan owners, i am curious to find out what steps in nissan taking to recall these bad seals and bearings? why should us the owners have to fix costly repairs when nissan knows their production efforts were not properly tested before fielding the dealerships? please inform me how to get it fixed free of cost to me. *tr

I have a 2004 nissan titan, i have had to replace the rear axle seals twice already.(once march 2009 and once about 1.5 years ago. warranty covered, but i am getting close to my warranty limit. i know that this is also a safety issue, because the fluid leaks down on your brakes, which is a big factory fault. i was just hoping that someone could help me, and other titan owners, for the safety and money, out of pocket when warranty is up. nissan should be held responsible for this and come up with sometype of permanent fix. any help would be appreciated. *tr thank you brian castle

Left & right rear axle seals blew out and leaked differential fluid. differential fluid leaking on rear brake rotors which could cause brake failure, which was a major safety concern to me. at time of failure at 85000 miles no suspension modifications had been done to vehicle. also, the rear differential oil will slowly leak and cause the rear differential to lose fluid and fail. nissan refuses to replaced spacer axle (43070-7s200), bearing (40210-7s210), and seal (43252-7s200). as this seemed to be a very common problem with the nissan titan, nissan should address this issue and offer a permanent fix so would not be faced with the safety issue in the future. *tr

2004 nissan titan se truck. rear axle seal leak
06/16/201156000
I just purchased a 2004 nissan titan le 4x4 about a month and a half ago. i am the 2nd owner and bought it from a guy who bought it brand new in 2004 and took very good care of it. the truck only has 55k miles. just last weekend, 6/19/2011, it started making banging and grinding noises in the back wheel. at first, i thought i ran over something and it was stuck in the back wheels. after examining the rear wheel area and the brake pads, everything looked normal. however, the noise got louder and louder. it sounded like i was dragging a refrigerator. i felt a stutter in the vehicle and it started to struggle to go when i would put the truck into drive. i assumed the brake calipers may have been jammed and brought it into an auto service center to be examined. about 2 hours later, i went back to the shop and the technician took me to go see the problem. they examined the rear brakes and differential and found numerous large chunks of broken metal inside, which she said were pieces of shoes, hardware, and gears. they confirmed that the problem was in the rear differential and that the gear damage had likely caused a chain reaction damaging the entire left rear axle assembly and e-brakes. the rear axle seals were leaking too onto the wheels. all these parts needed to be replaced along with the rear axle. the service shop quoted me $3800 to get this fixed! i was in shock as i just bought the truck. of course, i could no longer drive the truck either as it was in pieces and not drivable. what am i supposed to do? i don't have this money. i had no choice but to tell the service shop to go ahead with the repairs and i will just have to put it on a credit card. i decided to do some research and went on to several internet sites for nissan titan owners to see if others were experiencing similar problems or if there was a recall for this. after reading pages of entries posted by other titan owners, i found out i was not alone. nissan needs to help pay for these repairs!

2004 nissan titan - rear axle seals leaking. in shop- waiting for repairs. i understand that this is a commaon failure for this truck and that repairs most likely will not take care of the problem as it appears that it will probably occur again. need recall to correct this problem as brakes may fail. do we need what happened to toyota to happen to nissan to get results ? ? ?

Park - ignition interlock is defective and allows the key to be removed from the ignition without the vehicle being in park. this potentially allows the vehicle to roll away and cause damage or injury. *tr

Grinding noise from the rear of my 2004 nissan titan caused me to have it towed to the dealer. the dealer states that the differential is blown, and that new bearings and seals are needed to fix. the truck has only 71,000 miles, regularly serviced and has never towed a thing. *tr

My truck is equipped with vehicle dynamic control (vdc). it cuts power to the drive wheels if one or both start to spin. all trucks or cars of its kind have been equipped with a switch that this device can be turned on or off depending on the drivers situation. for some reason my truck did not come with this switch, i am a sitting duck when it rains if one tire so much as slips one revolution as i can mash the gas pedal and nothing will happen. in 4x4 it does the same thing and only in 4x4 lo will this vdc turn itself off. i have asked dealers many of times to fix this as it should have came with this option and was somehow missed. i want it fixed as i have almost been rear ended at least a dozen times b/c of this. *nm

Truck vibrates very roughly and brakes push down low to the floor when brakes are applied. brakes were first serviced at 4,503 miles on september 24, 2004. again truck started to vibrate when brakes were applied, and had to be pushed hard and low to floor. brakes were again serviced at 8,795 miles on january 18, 2005. truck currently has 12,565 miles and truck again vibrates when brakes are applied, and brakes need to be pressed hard and go low to the floor. nissan has been notified and waiting for contact for service of truck. in addition, the following items have been noted with nissan: there is a clunking noise when shifting gears (possible drive shaft problem), truck runs very rough and loud (possible belt tension problem), the radio has bad reception and the dashboard rattles. in addition, it was noted to nissan that the driver's side mirror reflects the dashboard when driving at night, which is very distracting when looking into the driver's side mirror in order to change lanes.*ak

Titan with full mfg tow package purchased to tow travel trailer. titan rated by dealer & mfg to tow 9,400 lbs and gvwr at 14,600 lbs. when towing 8,000 lbs (gvw was 13,500) at 50 mph on flat road, no wind, approx 85 deg f transmission temp rose into danger zone. weights were confirmed at certified scale. vehicle taken to dealer with description of problem. dealer said nothing was wrong with vehicle but tow was too heavy. mfg agreed with dealer that tow was too heavy after consulting with their engineers. neither could explain how 8,000 lbs was heavier than 9,600 lbs. mfg asked if i would agree to a test drive. i agreed but dealer was non responsive and not available. nothing was done and we were forced to trade trailer for lower weight trailer. we had the same problem in july 2004 on a hill with 6,340 lb (gvw 12,140) tow. i advised mgf again and they refused to do anything. *ak

While backing my boat into its parking spot i put my vehicle in park, left the driver's door open, left engine running and exited vehicle to unhitch my boat trailer from my truck trailer hitch. i was at the rear of the vehicle turning the trailer jack. i was behind the truck for approximately 45 seconds when i heard a click, and my vehicle started moving backwards. i realized what was happening--the gear shifted from park to reverse. i attempted to enter the driver's side, and opened door to hit the brake. while entering the driver's side i was holding onto the door as leverage attempting to apply my right foot onto the brake pedal. the reverse movement caused the door to come in contact with a tree. the tree pulled the door forward as the vehicle was moving backwards. the door's contact with the tree caused the door to pull me out and threw me to the ground, causing injury to my left arm and leg. i got up and ran and jumped into the cab of the truck and was able to stop the vehicle. supposedly being investigated by nissan technical representative.*ak

POWER TRAIN - AXLE ASSEMBLY - AXLE SHAFT
10/19/200743600107/23/2004
After approx 38,000 miles the driver side rear seal required replacement due to excessive leakage. at 43,600 miles the rear axle has failed, one mechanic thought it was as simple as the clutch plates sticking which caused the rear tires to turn the same speed when turning causing the inside tire to spin out. loud banging started to occur about 60 miles before total failure, in 40 mile before, when leaving a gas station the truck had shaken violently on take off then subsided as acceleration increased. with any small turn, the loud banging returned. on sharp turns the truck seemed to pull in both directions, even at speeds as low as 20 mph. i decided to put the truck in 4 wheel drive, which helped somewhat, probably taking some of the loading off the rear axle, but the drive wasn't easy. i had a mechanic look at my titan and after raising the rear end and spinning the tires he said the spider gear was shot and the vehicle was not safe to drive. towed to a nissan dealer 50 miles away, dropped the truck off because they were closed but did have the chance to speak with the service department earlier. the service rep guessed the rear of my truck before i could say anything other than that i thought something was wrong with my rear axle. the following monday the service rep called me and said the rear axle needs to be replaced. also, when the first mechanic looked at the problem, i noticed both seals on the axle were leaking, the driver side excessively. i use my titan for everyday commute and often tow my 4,000 pound travel trailer. when towing and turning sharply, sometimes the inside wheel would spin out, i thought this may be normal but i guess when under load the differential does not release properly causing the spin. when final failure occurred, the rear end would slip or skip as if gears were missing. when i parked the truck for the last time it had moved several inches back until another gear engaged. *tr

The rear axle seals on my '04 nissan titan, are leaking. this is apparently caused by a poorly designed breather valve. i have checked many forums, and this seems to be a very common problem. my truck is, and has been for a while, out of warranty. however, this seems the problem is a defect, and should be treated as such. however, the nissan dealership i have had look at it, does not see it that way. for example, you can look at the following: http://www.titantalk.com/forums/titan-engine-transmission-drivetrain/42837-rear-axle-seals-leaks-please-report.html. *tr

Bought the nissan titan used in november of 2007. i recently found a wet spot on the driver's side wheel (inside) under the brake rotor. i took the truck to the dealership and they said it seems to be a pretty common problem with the titan. it's a leaking axle seal. this leak was causing brake fluid to leak around and possible onto the brake rotor, calipers, and pads. this is a very dangerous problem due to possible fire and or brake failure. *tr

Right rear axle seal leaking, fluid leaking onto brake assembly; left rear axle seal seeping. seals had been leaking for a while. all problems fixed by dealer, but nissan should use an improved axle seal, and a different axle vent system. the vent does not allow air pressure to return into the axle housing when there is a negative pressure situation. a long vent hose run upwards in the body with a filter is a suggested solution on www.titantalk.com, and people that have experienced numerous axle seal failures have performed this fix and no longer experience problems. nissan should recall all titans and pathfinders with this axle vent system and repair the vent with something better. until this is performed, axle seals will continue to fail and fluid will continue to potentially leak onto brake assemblies. *jb

Right rear axle seal blew out and leaked differential fluid. differential fluid leaking on rear brake rotors which could cause brake failure, which was a major safety concern to me. at time of failure at 56,000 miles the rear differential oil will slowly leak and cause the rear differential to lose fluid and fail. nissan replaced spacer axle (43070-7s200), bearing (40210-7s210), and seal (43252-7s200). as this seemed to be a very common problem with the nissan titan, nissan should address this issue and offer a permanent fix so it would not be faced with the safety issue in the future. *tr

Left rear axle seal blew out and leaked differential fluid. differential fluid leaking on rear brake rotors which could cause brake failure. failure occurred at 27,470 miles (no suspension modifications had been done to vehicle). also, the rear differential fluid will leak slowly and cause the rear differential to lose fluid, causing failure. nissan has replaced spacer axle (43070-7s200), bearing (40210-7s210), and seal (43252-7s200). this appears to be a very common problem with the nissan titan. as such, nissan should address this issue and offer a permanent fix so owners will not be faced with the safety issue in the future. *tr

[forum members generally believe the rear axle breather element, (a one way check valve), creates a vacuum that sucks the seals, thereby creating the leak. some even remove the element and install tubing into their tail light to alleviate the check valve and still prevent water intrusion into the differential/axle]. *jb

Heard a clunk from the rear of the vehicle. upon inspection i found that the electronic locker disintegrated damaging the rear end. i found out that this is a very common problem for 2004 to 2007 titan's with the off-road package. never used the truck for towing. it was used for daily transportation. the truck had about 90,000 miles on it when the rear end blew up. i had a local shop put in new axles, ring and pinion and an after market locker for about $2500. nissan wanted to replace the complete rear end which would have been about $3500.

I have a 2004 nissan titan. my rear axel seals are leaking. this truck only has 85k, as of 6/10/11. i rarely pull trailers, or any heavy load. this is my daily driver. i do mostly city driving. i noticed there was a problem when my brakes started acting up. ex. i was driving near my house when, i pressed my brakes and it almost went to the floor. it also kicked in the abs, when i was only doing about 10mph. the emergency brake light came on flashing. every time i pressed the brake(only two times) it did this. i pulled over and turned the truck off. got out looked around and did not see anything wrong. i got back in the truck and drove straight home. it did not do this again until about 15k miles later. i then took it straight to nissan and they told me this was the problem. they told me only one was bad. about a week later i put the truck on a lift myself. i noticed both were leaking! i dont understand why this would happen unless it was a manufacturing default. there is never a hard strain on my drivetrain. it is 2wd and my work truck in the city. i have also read on the forums that this is a known problem. my radiator also busted last week. up till now i have never had any problem with this truck.

When my 2004 nissan titan le 4x4 pickup (66420 miles) failed at attempting to climb the hill to my house, i discovered that although 4wd was selected, it was apparently not engaged. upon investigation it was discovered that the driver's side half axle came out of the front differential. upon research i discovered this is apparently a recurring problem with nissan titan 4x4s. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who repaired the problem by re-inserting the half shaft into the front differential.

While driving in slick conditions i placed my 2004 titan in 4 hi, didn't notice any improvement in traction, slip indicator continued to light on acceleration. 4 hi indicator showed engagement but the truck was not engaging in either 4 hi or 4 lo. took the truck to an auto repair shop. the c clips on the shaft had failed and allowed the shafts to come out of the splines. due to that the shafts not being in place they ovaled the sockets, the differential oil leaked out, the bearings went out which in turn cased both the front differential and the transfer case to fail. i got the truck repaired, replaced both the transfer case and front differential, at the cost of $2500. a week later it snowed almost 12 inches. engaged 4 hi while leaving the drive way, drove approximately 4 miles and the truck lost 4 hi again and was making a grinding noise i put the truck back into 2 hi noise stopped. took it back to the shop and the shaft has come out again, even though this was a new front differential and was told that there is no fix for this problem. it happens and will continue to happen when ever 4 wheel drive is used or is to be engaged.

Problem: noise in the front axle and would not shift into 4-wheel drive while moving. during an oil change, the dealer noticed that the front axle was leaking. recommended replacement and mentioned the original equipment was inferior to the replacement. several months earlier the rear axle was leaking and the dealer replace that seal as well. cost: front differential axle $1,700 & rear differential $900. total of $2,600 in two months. my concern is why does a vehicle (2004 & 47k) need a complete front end replacement? come on nissan, please recognize you have a manufacturer defect or an engineering issue and take responsibility for this!

While driving kid's to school one morning truck locked up wheels and skidded through traffic for couple 100ft from 35mph or so. got out of car and could see that something in left front suspension hanging out and some kind of fluid everywhere. incident almost caused me too crash and also stranded myself and kids. car was towed to mechanic as i could do nothing to get car to move, also assumed was not to safe to try and drive. after diagnosing was told that left front axle flange had fell out of front differential and would need the entire front differential replaced with left front axle as well which got caught in suspension and locked up wheels. cost on repair's would run around $2000.00. service writer advised that should be or possibly covered under warranty as truck has 6 year 60,000 mile warranty on power train. truck has 64,872 and is a 2004. called 3 different dealerships and all said no due to 4800 miles over, but that i could drop off and they would gladly repair and see if nissan would dol anything. was not comfortable with that as most visit's to dealership always ended up same way. sorry we couldn't help here's your bill . not happy with this whole thing checked up on this problem and found are 1000's of complaint's for the same issue for the exact same problem and how it occur's all over internet, lemonlaw site, forums and also here at nhtsa. after having truck repaired at local shop also found out that nissan has designed a entire new differential to fix this issue. although when i spoke to these dealership's service department they knew nothing of the sort. the parts department had no problem giving this information to the mechanic at my shop that performed repair's. it seems a bit scary that not only does the dealership and or manufacturer know about this, but also government and traffic/highway safety people and yet we just keep driving around with our families and loved one's trusting these vehicle's because no one is telling us different.

As so many others have experienced, the rear axle seals are leaking fluid on rear brake rotors which is causing brakes to fail. this is a major safety concern and expense. nissan should be made to fix issue. only have 54000 miles on vehicle

Rear differential seals failed. nissan service advised me both axles needed replaced along with new seals. over $1660. they have a service notice that axles in titan pick-ups need upgraded. sounds like they know the axle set up leads to seals that leak causing differential failure

2004 nissan titan rear axle seals (left and right) showing sign of leakage at 90,100 miles. this is the second occurance for this problem with this vehicle. i purchased the vehicle in july 2006 with 51, 100 miles and discovered both rear axle seals leaking. nissan replaced the entire rear axle in july 2006. now 5 years and 39,000 miles later the problem returned.

I notice oil on the rear tires and running into the rear rotor which could lead to breaking failure.my mechanic said the rear axle seals and pinion seal were bad so i had them replace right after i purchase the vehicle with only 30,000 and just now i got new tires and that's when i find out it's been leaking all this time now with 104.000 miles. lokk on the internet and this is a common problem with 04 nissan titan. no recall...

My 2004 nissan titan was in 4 wheel drive on flat sand. it was engaged in 4wd. simply driving off the beach, the front left axle disconnected from the differential and leaked all the fluid . i did not notice this until i was on the street. the dealer said that nissan created an upgrade for it but it was not warranty. luckily i did not drive with it like this home. i do not know what could have happened. i have always amintained my vehicles and not abuse them. in no way was this a action that tested the limits of my vehicles design. the axle simply popped out.

I have a 2004 nissan titan. i began having humming sound from underneath my vehicle at speeds above 20mph approximately 3 months ago. the humming has recently turned into a much louder whining noise, so i took the truck into nissan for evaluation. they claim my rear differential is bad and the entire rear end needs to be replaced. they are unable to repair rear differentials according to the service manager. i performed a rear end fluid change and found several pieces of metal in the oil. the pieces looked like teeth from gears. nissan claims they've never heard of any problems before. due to the $3000+ price tag for replacing the entire rear end, nissan recommended i get a new truck. i feel like they are aware of a problem, but do not want to admit it thus far. i believe a rear end failure could cause a fire and or cause a loss of vehicular control.

The vehicle in question is a 2004 nissan titan with approx. 36,000 miles of use on the vehicle. on several uses i heard 'clunking' noises from under the vehicle. on the last time before taking the vehicle to the dealer, the abs warning light illuminated and the 'clunking' noise was like a grinding noise also. the dealer told me the differential had failed and needed to be replaced. this part is an extremely important part of the vehicles ability to operate safely. this part failed with only 36,000 miles on it. clearly it is a defective product and action to force the manufacturer to correct the problem to prevent serious injuries to others is required. the dealer also stated that the radiator had failed and replaced it without authorization. when questioned about this the dealer stated it was a crack inthe seam.

Failure of rear diferential. 2004 titan purchased 8/04. in 8/05 while in washington state on vacation, noticed 3-4 mpg drop in gas mileage. crawled under truck looking for gas leak and found differential fluid had shot out of front seal and fluid was low. added fluid per owners manual and brought to a dealer. dealer said i used wrong fluid and should have used synthetic. at this point nissan realized they had a heat problem and switched to synthetic and installed finned differential covers (which i noticed were on the 2005 models in their lot). i told the dealer they were covering up a heat problem on the 2004 model and wanted an inspection. they refused since they didn't see a problem. installed mag-hytech cover myself. periodically had oil shoot out of vent on axle tube and all over tire. dealer said that was normal. 4/17/08 at 41000 miles right axle seal failure, dealer fixed. 10/13/09 at 52589 miles left axle seal failure, convinced nisssan corporate to fix and they did. found fix on-line for bad axle vent design, added vent hose and filter but still had fluid coming out. 3/8/10 at 55900 lots of metal on dipstick, changed fluid and pieces of spider gear came out with fluid. 3/16/10 at 55919 brought to dealer for inspection hoping to get nissan to repair differential. nissan refused since too expensive and there wasn't a recall anyway, one of the dumber comments i've ever heard. 3/22/10 at 55924 had 4x4 shop repair differential. shop showed me nissan had installed wrong bolts in differential. shoulder on bolts was too short and only hit one side of spider gear assembly flange, with other side riding on the threads. bolts eventually backed out causing spider gears to self-destruct. cost me $2100 to repair, existing ring and pinion were in good shape inspite of issues. replaced differential assy with detroit true trac. shop used bolts from another dana differential and cut length to fit.

The rear differential of my 2004 nissan titan failed today while turning into traffic. i lost all acceleration and was nearly sideswiped due to this problem. i am aware of at least 75 other cases of this same failure. my dealer wants $3300 to fix it and i only have 49,000 miles on my truck. this is unacceptable and someone needs to do something about it.
05/01/201075000
I own a 2004 nissan titan, and i noticed oil on my rear wheels, and on the floor below both of my rear breaks. the oil was leaking from the rear differential at both ends of the axle. the oil was leaking all over the break backing plate. i took it to the dealer and they replaced both rear wheel bearings and seals. i turned this into nissan, and they re-embersed me for the repair. i found that this problem is common on the 2004 nissan titan, and i feel this is a safety issue as the rear breaks do not operate well now that the oil was on the breaks. at the time, i had approximately 75000 miles on the truck, and don't tow or use for heavy use. i drive this as i would a car. anyhow, the passenger side wheel seal has started leaking again, and i have 90000 miles on the truck now. i feel nissan should be forced to recall this potentially dangerous manufacturer defect.

On the afternoon of feb. 25th, 2010 my nissan titan rear differential made a loud boom noise. after wards, the whenever the vehicle rolled a loud whirling noise could be heard in the rear of the vehicle. i towed the vehicle to my mechanic where he said the rear differential is shot. as he was backing up from the tow truck the truck made a second loud pop noise. my vehicle has only 40k miles on it. i do not tow anything. i do not constantly lug heavy items on it. i don't push my truck to the limit at all. but this happens. and worst of all it happens when the warranty expires. this is ridiculous and unacceptable especially from nissan. this should be a recall and should be fixed. i have three options from my mechanic. used for a thousand dollar. rebuild it for 1,200.00 dollars, or over 2000 for new. and this does not guarantee if it would happen again. i am very upset at this situation. *tr

Front axle failed at 41,000 miles with attempting to switch into 4wd hi on snow and ice covered street driving approximately 10 miles per hour. truck was taken to dealer where it was determined that the driver's side axle shaft snapped at a machined point on the shaft and had pulled out of the differential housing allowing the gear fluid to leak out. dealer replaced the stub shaft and internal pinion gear. this was only the second time i've used the 4wd. thankfully i purchased an extended warranty as it was not covered by factory warranty. *tr

Nissan titan 2004, 4 door, v8, 4 wheel drive. rear differential, also called universal joint, went out at 74,000 miles. nissan had a seal leak issue, which previous owner did the replacement and repair of the seal but it did not work or something else went wrong. repair cost $3,213.31. this is ridiculous. vehicles should easily go 100,000 miles without universal joint issues. *tr

I have a 2004 nissan titan that had an issue with the differential in the rear end. in my case the rear end did not lock up at highway speed but the potential for that happening is there. after my problem occurred i did some research online and determined that my case was not an isolated incident. my truck has not been abused, has a towing package which has been used to tow a trailer only a few times and had only 62,000 miles at the time of the failure. from what i could determine nissan redesigned the rear end i n the 2008 model and the problem has been reduced but that does not rectify the problem for the 2004-2007 models on the road. unfortunately the nissan solution is to replace the faulty rear end with the same type which in my case i chose not to do. from the information i could gather i was better off and safer going with an aftermarket differential which i decided to do to prevent potential problems in another 3-4 years or sooner. i realize there are not large numbers of nissan titans on the road but this does not make the situation any less dangerous for the drivers of them. *tr

Driver side rear axle seal leaking, fluid leaking onto brake assembly; left rear axle seal seeping. seals had been leaking for a while. on www.titantalk.com people have experienced numerous axle seal failures. nissan should recall all titans and pathfinders with this axle vent system and repair the vent with something better. until this is performed, axle seals will continue to fail and fluid will continue to potentially leak onto brake assemblies creating a safety hazard. *tr

I drove my 2004 nissan titan for 65,000 miles to and from work and school only. one day the rear end just blew up on me in the middle of traffic, fortunately i or any other driver wasn't injured. the issue came up out of no where and is very dangerous. i tried to receive help from the dealer to resolve this issue however they are refusing to accept the responsibility. the failure was do to the leaking axle seals because of faulty parts. my warranty expired at 60,000 miles, and the failure began around 20000 miles ago, according to the service advisor at the local nissan dealership. *tr

1: just normal driving on the highway i noticed a slight vibration developing on the floorboard when driving home from work. the next day just went to go to the store, about 5 mins away, the slight vibration turned into a very loud knocking sound and you could feel it throughout the truck. i immediately pulled over and had the truck towed to nissan. 2: the failure was the rear differential, nissan told me that basically the whole inside of the rear dif came apart and the whole rear end axle to axle will have to be replaced to a tune of 3,000 dollars. luckily i was going slow (about 25 mph) so there wasn't any other major damage or injury. i've been researching this issue on titan talk forums and many many people have had this same issue and have reported it like i am now, some weren't so lucky and were on freeway which at those speeds they claim the drive-shaft broke off the rear diff and was dragging on the road, not good. 3: nissan is replacing the whole rear-end axle to axle to a tune of 3,000 dollars and they only warranty they are offering to me is 1 year unlimited miles and that is all they offer which in my opinion is horrible. nissan came out with a newer version of this rear-end which they will be installing so hopefully this one will not fail but i am still very upset about having to shell out 3,000 for something that should never fail like this. this is a dangerous hazard having these rear-ends fail like this, other trucks i've owned in the past i've put 200 plus thousand miles and never have had a problem with the read differential. *tr

Driving down our snow-covered street we live on, i tried to engage 4hi. all i heard was a grinding noise. after stopping i tried the 4hi switch again and it seemed to engage. i didn't think anymore about it until the next day when i noticed a big puddle of oil on driveway. the driver's side front axle half-shaft is flopping around loose at the differential, and all the diff oil has leaked out. nissan says the whole diff needs to be replaced. apparently a c-clip inside the diff is easily broken and it lets the half-shaft pop out of position, and as it turns and flops around it destroys the seals and diff case. searching the internet on this failure shows that a lot of people have had the same failure, and if the c-clip gets stuck in the gears it can lead to diff breaking into chunks. no real fix except to replace the diff. pushing the half-shaft back into the diff won't work as the c-clip is needed to retain it, and the c-clip typically cannot be replaced because the diff case is damaged. *tr

I own a 2004 titan with less than 50,000 miles. on 12/3/09 my front differential broke. i never towed anything with this truck. i never even hauled anything heavy in the bed. the dealership replaced the failed differential at my expense since my warranty ran out 2 weeks before my front diff breaking.

*tr

My truck sounded slightly louder than normal on my short drive home. i was driving on a 35mph road and something didn't seem right. it sounded like my tires were out of alignment. i drove the half mile home on the 35mph road in 2wd. i pulled into my garage and looked at my tires and under my truck. everything looked normal. the next morning i noticed some oil on my garage floor. after further investigation i saw it was coming from my passenger side front axle seal. my axle was pulled loose from the differential because some weak clip that held the assembly together has broken. i researched the problem and found that several people have had the same exact problem. i contacted the local nissan dealer to get an estimate for repair. i was told that i had a one of a kind problem that they have never heard of. my local repair shop told me it would be several days to get parts and repair the damage. they estimated the cost would be between $350-$600 to replace the front right axle, axle seal, and clip. additional cost and parts would be necessary if any further damage was found in the differential.

*tr

2004 nissan titan le 4x4 rear diff failure at about 53k, was replaced by dealer under warranty. since the new diff was put in, noise and thumping can be heard and felt when stopping and going coming from the rear. when putting the truck into reverse from park you can hear and feel the drive shaft bang when it goes into gear, there is too much slack in the rear and the dealer says nothing is wrong when there is definitely something wrong. i feel that the rear will again fail. *tr

I currently own a 2004 titan crew cab with tow package and i have 80,000 mi. on this truck. throughout the ownership it has been reliable for work and pleasure. i do tow a trailer, avg. weight is 4000 lbs.. i have had front brake issues, nissan took care of until it was 3yr.s old, however since i have installed american made drilled rotors. the rear was replaced at 71k, it is a dana rear and uses gears made in china. it was covered under warranty, however it will not last long again. the problem is not design itself it is the quality of the metal being used for the gears. any clunking, popping sounds from rear it needs to be replaced! otherwise it is a good truck for the money. *jb

My nissan titan crews brakes were not performing well on a trip i took. after getting home i noticed oil on my garage floor at both rear brakes. the rear diff. was leaking all over the brake backing plate to the extent that oil was being slung throughout the wheel well. i have not taken it to the dealer yet since i just found this problem but i am at 38,000 mi. just 2000 mi. out of warranty. i checked online and this appears to be a common problem. i feel nissan should be forced to recall this potentially dangerous manufacturer defect. *jb

2004 nissan titan 4wd. at 54,000 miles the rear differential gears blew apart while i was driving. this destroyed the rear differential and caused $3000 worth of repairs. the rear axle seals on both sides were leaking at the time the gears failed. apparently, this was becoming a common problem/defect with most nissan titan ,though so far nissan seems to be ignoring the problem. although the rear end gear failure did not cause an accident i was told by a mechanic that if the gears failed and lock at highway speeds they could cause the rear wheels to lock which could cause an accident. *ak

I have had my 2004 titan 3 weeks and yesterday it made a clunk that i thought was something sliding in the bed. later that evening, i pulled out of the car wash and horrible clunking started coming from the rear differential. it seems to be started when turning which leads me to think it is related to the e-lock feature of the rear differential. it is parked and undriveable until the dealer gets it towed tomorrow. it appears to have had previous rear differential problems because the stock cover has been changed to aluminum finned type and it has synthetic oil in it. *nm

I was driving my nissan titan 2004 down the freeway, the differential fails on me and i am pulling a 6000 lb trailer, i almost caused an accident trying to pull into a parking lot while the differential is completely mangled. my dealership fixed the differential by putting a 2005 axle in. the second time was the same situation only i wasn't pulling a trailer, the dealership again put another 2005 axle in. the truck caused me to stop in traffic, luckily no accident happened, the truck was able to catch some teeth in the differential to pull me off the road. the first failure happened at 8000 miles about march 2005, the second at 19000 november 2005, just recently i decided not to take it to the dealership and had a quick lube check my differential oil. it was black and had quarter sized chunks of metal on the plug. this means the differential is about to fail. what happens if i am on a winding road in a canyon, which i have to go through often. i could die or kill someone else if this unsafe truck fails in a blind corner or bend. at the second failure the dealership made me sign a waiver stating that they would not fix my differential should it fail again. i called the dealership about the third possible occurrence and they simply said call nissan. i have no one to turn to, my truck is constantly breaking down. they don't want to help me. my brakes have been worked on three times, both times of differential failure the truck was in the shop for a month, i have owned the truck for one year and currently have 29000 miles. nissan has a bad part in their trucks, please investigate, there are many others, all i can do is suggest they report their problems here also, perhaps that will help. *jb

From a dead stop i pressed the throttle about 3/4 the way and i hear a grinding noise and i cannot move, as i pull over i am thinking how am i going to get back home. i think its a one time error, i try to move again, the grinding continues. i think some more and put the truck into 4 x 4, i can move but very slowly because of the gears moving around in the rear differential this happened at 15,000 miles at a stop sign about 1 mile away from my house, i was lucky i was not on the freeway or anything like a main road or their may have been an accident. *jb

Rear differential was replaced due to an eternal failure at 9,700 miles. at around 12,000 miles the rear end started to clunk when shifting from park to reverse and in and out of drive. i took it into the dealership where the claimed it was normal and was just gear linkage being loosened up. normal though they confirmed. two days later i was in 5 o'clock heavy traffic and was turning into a major intersection and had to apply heavy acceleration. i heard a loud clunk and then my truck sat there and revved up with no movement. i had cars approaching fast which had to swerve around me since i was stalled in the middle of the road. a passerby stopped and pulled over to help me push my truck out of the busy road. the dealership was called and they paid for the truck to me towed back. this was the second occurrence so they agreed to buy the truck back. the first fix took over 1 month to complete. the service manager agreed that there is a trend with these trucks and internal failure with the rear differential. *jb

I am in the military stationed in virginia... i had a clicking noise coming from the rear end of my truck prior to thanksgiving. i took it to nissan and they said the u joints are going bad. didn't sound like a u joint, so i asked nissan would it be ok for me to drive the truck 440 miles each way to go home to wv to see my family for thanksgiving and they said yes, it will be fine. so i go home and saw my family, and then the saturday morning after thanksgiving i got up early and went and stopped and got gas. got back in the truck and started it up and when to put it in gear, and the whole rear end just grinded. the truck would not move. had to put the truck in 4 wheel drive just to drive to my sister house and called nissan. after having the truck for 14 days, and ordering a new rear end for a 2 wheel drive truck, they decided that they could not get a new rear end due to nation backorder, so they pull one off of a 06 nissan titan 4x4 and then i got to return back to va to assume my military duties, after being stuck in wv for 2 weeks. they did give me a rental car, but put a restriction on the car when i could only drive 150 miles a day. so i couldn't go back to work in va. i did miss out on work, and time, and had to use 2 weeks of my vacation days, but most important, this could have happen driving 65 mph on the interstate, or in busy traffic and could have put my life & others around me at danger! nissan should recall this problem, or fix it right. before people die! thanks for your time. *jb

Rear differential failure in my nissan titan pickup. started as a clunk when changing gears from park to drive around 9,700 miles on the truck. eventually led up to a feeling of slack in the drivline, a feeling as if the u-joints were going out. backed out of driveway one day and a lound pop followed by grinding occured. had it towed down to johanson nissan and they replaced it, but took over 30 days since there was a national backorder for the rear diff. this happended in feburary of 05, and i was #12 on the parts list. replacement diff only lasted around 7,000 miles and went out as well. both rear diff failures were caused be broken spider gears. dealership agreed to buy back truck. *nm

Rear differential failure. this has happened to at least 25 other owners that i know of. nissan has not properly addressed this issue. the factory has increased the fluid capacity and now uses synthetic fluid. also an aluminum finned cover for better heat transfer. this is a 'band aid' for a differential that is not able to handle the weights this vehicle is designed to tow. failures continue even after the band aid has been performed. some owners have had 4 failures on the same truck!!!! *jb

Dt: consumer states the rear differential casing on his 2004 nissan titan pickup truck are bad. after talking to several people on the internet the consumer says that when hauling over 100lb. this causes the rear differential to overheat leading to lubricant leakage and outer corrosion of the differential cover. there have been some consumers to complain that the rear differential seizes and catches on fire. he says this was documented in a magazine not long after the truck was tested. the consumer stated the differential is actually starting to rust and the lubricant is starting to leak out. the dealer refuses to deal with him. the manufacturer says they will not deal with him until the dealer does. *jb
