I have a 2005 nissan titan. on thanksgiving evening my family and i were driving home on a major highway when all of a sudden i heard a clunk and lost acceleration. i was in the middle of the highway and had to cross 3 lanes to try and get over to the shoulder. we nearly got hit by many passing cars due to the immediate loss of power and slowing of my truck. after finally towing the truck to the shop i found out that, for the second time, the rear differential went out. the first time was at 75000 miles and the second at 125000 miles. both times i am stuck footing the bill. needless to say my only mode of transportation is still sitting broken until i am able to pay the 3500 dollars to get it fixed. *tr

The rear end was replaced before i bought the truck and just 3 years later i had to have the left rear axle seal replaced and now im having to replace the right side axle seal. im not too sure that its not damaged the rear end itself. i had a case number with nissan north america but because of the time its been out of warranty they wont replace anything. there are too many people who are having the same problem with theirs for there not to be something done about it. these seals should not be going out that quick. *tr

Originally heard a light noise on deceleration. was unsure of origin or severity but suspected brake wear. noise changed over the course of a month and on final trip into nearby shop for diagnostics it had grown much louder while decelerating. shop suspected rear axle seal leak and differential failure. had truck flatbed towed to nearby nissan dealership and they found little evidence of leak and plenty of fluid. yet the differential had failed entirely. they suspected a ring and pinion failure though they didn't crack open the case as parts/labor make repair prohibitively costly. after checking salvage prices they recommended a full replacement with a new nissan axle. i was lucky because apparently this kind of differential failure can lock up the rear wheels while driving at speed causing a very dangerous situation. this truck is primarily driven around town. it's never driven off-road and never towed anything nor carried large loads - it's been babied. seals and differentials should not prematurely fail in a lightly driven, well-maintained vehicle which was designed and promoted for heavy duty use. *tr

Rear axel seal is leaking for the third time, which can compromise the rear brakes with axel fluid. nissan made the first repair at 30,000 miles under warranty. i paid for parts and made repairs myself the second time. now at the third i have contacted nissan consumer affairs, and they have refused, with no explanation, to help with this repair, even though they issued an internal service bulletin in 2010, to replace the complete axel with bearing and seal. so nissan is aware that they have an issue with the early model titans. i guess they are waiting for someone to be seriously injured or die before they address this issue. *tr

While driving my truck home from work,i noticed the sound of the exhaust became progressively louder. i parked the truck for the night. prior to leaving the next morning i tried to locate the source of the increased noise. however, i noticed after starting the vehicle the noised would decrease. therefore, i took the truck to my mechanic for diagnosis. he told me that the header on one side is cracked and the other header on the other-side shows signs of stress. also, he explained this a common issue with the nissan titan and i might want to explore my repair option with the local nissan dealership. however, after discussing this issue with the nissan dealership, i was told there is no recall for the notorious issue and the cost of the repair is my responsibility. upon hearing this, i decide i would lodge my complaint about this issue here. *tr

The vehicle braking began to deteriorate so i checked each wheel, front and back. while inspecting the rear brake pads and rotors i noticed oil on both. upon further inspection i noticed that the rear axle seal on both sides was leaking oil and it had gotten on the rotors and pads. i replaced both rotors and all pads on the rear, and inspected the rear axle vent which i found plugged. i installed a new vent but the rear axle seals are still leaking and need to be replaced. in doing research on the problem i found it to be common on this vehicle. *tr

Rear right axle seal began to leak on 5/14/12 was about to get fixed -kept diff full- (second time happened)... on 7/27/12 rear spider gears broke causing the right rear wheel to drag across the pavement in a parking lot. this has been a common occurrence with 04-07 offroad titans with the locking rear diff. if this failure happened on the highway and the rear wheels were to have stopped moving it could have caused a crash. nissan has since redesigned the rear end but this should be a recall for safety concerns. *tr

Got in my truck to go to work today and while turning right out of my driveway the engine revved up and i was going no where. i let off the gas and as the motor rpm came down there was a loud bang and the vehicle jumped forward. continued down the road about 200ft and turned around. parked the truck. checked the fluid. metal shavings and chunks inside with plenty of fluid. also noticed a leaking rear wheel seal on the drivers side. this truck only has 78000 miles on it. absolutely unacceptable nissan. *tr

My truck had a whine that sounded like brakes squealing. i had the nissan dealership check it out at my last service and the told me that the rear brakes would need to be replaced soon. so a few months later my truck suddenly began to pop and lunge when turning so i brought it in same day. $3,600.00 later i had a new rear end because the other one just failed. really? no warranty, no nothing from nissan. checking this site (and others) this is a huge problem with titans. since this is a (dot) gov. site how about doing something about this!

I looked outside and had a puddle of oil under the front of my truck. got the truck to a mechanic and he informed me that the front axle popped out of place. this truck is stock, no lifts and never goes off road. so this happened under normal driving conditions. a front axle should not just pop out of place. i just got it back from replacing the rear axle and seals as both were leaking. also the rear shackles on the vehicle rotted out. this vehicle has way too many problems for nissan not to be recalling and fixing these issues.

The rear end was replaced under warranty in my 2005 titan at 55k miles no charge due to oval shaped axle tubes causing axle seal failure. here i am again 2012 with 115k miles out of warranty but only 60k miles on the rear end that was replaced under warranty and have the same issue blown axle seals due to out of round axle tubes. if you do not recognize this all the axle oil can leak out causing sudden rear differential failure which may lead to a crash or loss of life. nissan was contacted about this issue after the seals where replaced in the second rear end and the seals continue to leak after replacement. nissan refused to do anything about the issue and stated your truck is out of warranty imo there should have been a recall on the axles leaking along with the cracked exhaust manifolds that were numerous reported also. visit the nissan forums and you can view 44 pages of differential issues on titan talk.com. nissan should be held accountable...

As my husband just got off the interstate the rear end completely blew out, parts went everywhere. wheels locked up. a gentleman that was walking brought me some parts that shot across the street. thank god i was off the interstate where the speed limit is 70 mph, the ending to this story would be more tragic. long story short, it was the entire rear end. looks like i am looking at a $2,000 repair that evidently nissan knows all about with the complaints and it is crazy they have not done a thing about it. i know and understand that things happen to vehicles, but we had no warning of what just took place.

First heard roaring (wub wub wub wub sound coming from underneath when truck was coasting approximately 45 mph (no accelerator pressed) the faster i was coasting the louder and higher the sound became. sounded like bad tires, but upon pressing accelerator pedal, noise would completely go away. i took the truck home immediately and called my mechanic to come drive it and diagnose the vehicle. he took it for a test drive, brought it back and told me do not drive this truck; it is too dangerous. something is seriously wrong with the drive train probably the wheel bearings of differential. he would not drive it to his garage either as he had his young daughter and her friend with him. he came back with another guy to drive his vehicle as he would drive mine to his shop and told me he would put it on the lift and check it out. he drove away. i went back inside and then a few minutes later i see him backing down the driveway. i went out and asked him what was wrong at which time he informed me he heard a clanging and stopped immediately, and upon inspection found the drive shaft had fallen out onto the ground. he found the nut and repaired it well enough to back it to my home down the driveway. he showed me underneath and fluid was everywhere. i could see a definite gap between the driveshaft and where it attaches at the rear axle. he came back with a car-hauler and will inform me as to the full extent of the damage. thank god this catastrophic failure did not occur on the highway at speed with traffic. i have also had severe brake shake like many, many other titan owners.

2005 nissan titan 4x4 differential started making a noise when turning left or right from stop. we were told it could be limited slip issue and have fluid changed and make sure synthetic lube is put back in. mechanic showed me a part of a spider gear that was stuck to the magnetic drain plug. said we needed a new limited slip and probably not planetary gears. we were shocked when we were told that nissan prohibits the differential manufacturer from selling separate parts for the differential - you have to purchase the complete differential from nissan and it cost $2800 just for the part. checking this out on blogs, it appears that nissan had this problem on years '04 - '06 model years and they changed to a more substantial differential in 2008 because they must have seen the groundswell of totaled out differentials. most people just shell out the money and don't file complaints so unless nissan is forced to come clean on the problem we are you know what. my wife drives this truck to work everyday. we have pulled a boat trailer 6 times on 30 mile trips. this is a bunch of you know what.

Was driving our 2005 nissan titan approximatley 15 mph when the rear differential failed. we were 30 seconds from getting on a major interstate. there was a loud pop sound and the truck jerked and seemed to slip out of gear and locked up. the truck was barely driveable. our mechanic determined that it was the rear differential. when he called nissan to order the parts to rebuild it, he was told by the nissan parts distributor that because of previous problems with the differential, they only sell the entire differential part, not the individual components, the part alone was $2900. our entire bill was $3800, and ofcourse we are out of warranty. we conducted research on this issue and found 80 complaints on this nhtsa website, countless consumer complaints on various websites, and even some court cases. nissan clearly knows about this potentially life-threatening issue in the 2004 and 2005 models and has done nothing about it to protect consumers. we will be pursuing this with nissan and will be taking legal action if neccesary. not sure why nothing has been done about this especially given all the complaints out there. nhtsa should look into this issue as this defect is very dangerous and could cause a fatal accident (if it hasn't already). shame on you nissan.

Had a bad sound coming out of front tire area. noticed grey oil the following day on my garage floor. 70,123 miles on it. took my '05 titan to my service guy. said the front differential is completed gone. got it repaired yesterday, $2100....looked online and saw folks with the same issues, many folks! seems to me nissan should own up to this being an issue with these model year trucks and correct the problem (ie recall) before its a major accident for someone. my mechanic noticed that the part number was supersceded by another number, most likely meaning that nissan knows of the issue and that's their way of correcting the issue. only issue nissan, consumers pay for the issue. makes me want to re-think about purchasing another nissan product, i have two presently.
12/10/201192000
Vehicle rear differential failed with out cause. with any slight turn of the wheel the entire vehicle would jump and a loud knocking sound was herd at the rear end. nissan dealership informed me that this seems to be an issue with the vent tubes corroded causing pressure to build up in the rear differential and the spyder gear(s) fail. nissan will not issue a recall for this issue and does not supply rebuild parts for the vehicle- their only fix is for me to purchase a new rear axle. searching on google has reviewed 168,000 hits for this problem. i find it difficult to believe that this is an isolated issue. my local transmission shop is unable to locate a used rear axle as demand for these parts is extremely high. had this happend on the highway it probably would have caused a fatal accident as a sudden locking of the rear end at 60 mph plus would cause a loss of control.

2005 nissan titan king cab 2x4 leaking oil from both side of the axle. problem axle seak failure. upon taking the truck into the dealership for checkup and they quoted me for about $1700.00 in repairs. as per there tsb they will replace both axle seals and axle tsb ntb10-032 if the seals fail on most of the titan's shouldn't nissan do a recall on this plus when i was there the service man stated that there tsb says to replace both axle which drives up the cost instead of just replacing the axle seal.

I was in new york for the week. i was currently out spotting deer, i went to turn around, i put the truck in reverse and it sounded like my rear end blew up. i then continued to camp. the next day i went to drive it and it poppedlike crazy making a big noise in rear. i drove it to a garage and they checked my rear differential and said my spider gears in the rear end snapped. there was pieces of gears all through my rear differential. this is a dangerous thing that can happen and has been happening with nissan titans. i notified nissan and was told to take it to a nissan garage, the closest garage is 47 miles i will have to pay for towing and everything there is no recall on the rear axles but there should be because this is happening all over. titan rear ends are to small for the truck. also it is going to cost around 3000 because nissan does not make the parts for rear axle, how pathetic is that!

While taking my 05 titan in for a service appointment (to replace a melted wiring harness from my tailpipe falling off, but that's another story/problem) i heard a soft whine. i reported it to the service manager. he called me back later in the day and told me that it was likely a bearing in the rear differential. he said he couldn't replace the bearing, that the differential was a complete assembly and had to be fully replaced at a cost of $2400. i asked him what he would do, and he said he'd keep driving it until the whine got too obnoxious. so i did not replace it. i picked the truck up on friday, 9/2/11. two days later, while slowing down on a highway to make a turn, i heard a grating sound, followed by the truck locking up. when i got out, the drive shaft was laying on the ground. the differential had locked up. had to be towed. i bought the truck to be able to deliver hay, which with my trailer is about 6,000 pounds. i deliver typically 6 loads a year, and it is about a 10 mile drive to my customer's home. over 90% of my miles on the truck are highway miles, with the cruise on and in 2 wheel drive. i do not take it off road. i only use 4 wheel drive when we have snow on the ground (2 or 3 times a year). the truck is garaged at home and at work. there is no way the differential should be failing on a full size pickup truck under these conditions. i opened a case with nissan consumer affairs, and told them that i felt nissan should pay a substantial percentage of the repair even though the truck had 68,000 miles and the warranty ran out at 60,000 miles. they rejected my claim and paid nothing.

The front and rear wheel seals and spacers are faulty and causing fluid to leak out onto the brakes and brake pads. which could cause fire, braking problems and if unfixed could cause the front/rear end to go out on the truck.

I have a 2005 nissan titan with only 44000 miles on it. during recent driving it sounded as if the right rear was grinding to pieces. it continually got worse so i looked under the truck to see if there was something that was caught and dragging. it was so loud that people would stare at the truck when it passed by. after it was taken to the garage they discovered that the insides of the right rear axle were almost completely torn apart. it was very fortunate that it did not cause a serious problem while driving. they also found that the left axle was leaking and would likely also break down. the cost to repair the truck was over $1700.00.

Both rear axle seals leaked at 38,xxx in 9/2009 and were replaced under warranty. no issues for two years. in 8/2011 driver side is leaking again. tried to express my concerns to nissan and was rejected because of warranty issues. seems to be an inherent problem experienced by a lot of 04-07' titan/armada owners. tsb issued by nissan to replace entire axle assembly 5 months after my first leak, but they don't feel it's their responsibility to notify owners who experienced the issue prior to the bulletin. was told by a nissan rep. that the tsb is a guideline for techs. to properly fix an issue if it arises. i had the issue but it was 5 months before they figured out how to do a proper fix, and according to them it doesn't apply to me unless the part or labor or drivetrain was still under warranty. was told that if this was a widespread issue they might offer good faith credit. curious as to how many it will take for them to not turn the blind eye to an obvious problem with what i feel is a safety issue. if there is a problem with the drive axle of a vehicle, i believe that should qualify as a safety issue or recall.

Tl-the contact owns a 2005 nissan titan. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds he notice that there was a loud noise coming from the rear end. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they advised him that there was a metal piece of fragment in the rear differential. the vehicle has not been repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. the failure and current mileages were approximately 75,000. tb

I was making a u turn and heard a pop from the rear end. i had the truck towed to my garage and when they removed the cover from the rear differential pieces fell out. it had destroyed itself. i'm glad i wasn't driving at highway speeds at the time with my wife and two kids in the car. things could have been much worst. if you google nissan titan rear end failure there's a 46 page long post on titantalk.com about titan rear end failures. nissan need to be held accountable for this common problem.

I have a 2005 nissan titan. the rear axle is leaking all over the rear brakes causing a safety issue with the brakes. it could cause braking failure or a fire in the rear brakes. nothing has happened yet but could potentially cause a bad accident to happen if someone owning this vehicle didn't realize that the rear axle was leaking.

My 2005 nissan titan has been leaking rear differential oil from both axle seals. the fluid has been thrown around in the wheel wells and has soaked all four rear brake sets it has greatly increased stopping distance and i feel the faulty parts should be covered by nissan as well as new brakes, service and emergency. recently my girlfriend parked and left the vehicle neutral with the parking brake on. the truck then rolled down my driveway and hit a tree 5 feet from my daughters swingset! i feel that the reason it rolled away is because of the oil on the brake shoes. not only do i need to replace all rear brakes and the axle seals but now also a rear bumper and have my left rear quater panel repaired.

I purchased a use 2005 nissan titan 4x4 in may of 2010. in december 2010 i went to engage the front wheel drive due to driving up a road that had snow and ice. after complying with the directions in the owner's manual i began driving up the grade only to find that i had no pull from the front wheels. this almost resulted in the loss of control of the vehicle due to loss traction on the road. one time the front of the vehicle complete slide back down the hill, causing the vehicle to do a complete 180 degree turn. days later i took the vehicle to my machanic and found the the front axle had become detached. they advised me that this was the second titan they had seen do this and had heard that titans had a problem detaching when driven in four wheel drive mode on dry pavement and the vehicles would make sharp turns. luckly, my incident did not result in any carshes, however it did come close to striking fixed objects along the road.

Failed rear end differential at only 75,000 miles. driving on highway when a loud bang came from the rear end. made it home, but more popping and banging noises along the way, especially turning under acceleration. drained rear differential fluid and removed cover, metal chunks and shavings in case. this vehicle has the big tow package on it and has never been used to tow anything. it has been mostly on the highway and off road very infrequently and never heavy-duty off road. it is very fortunate that the failed rear end did not cause the vehicle to lock the rear axle and cause a severe accident. this is a very common issue on this model of vehicle, and in my opinion is due to a faulty locking rear differential. nissan will not admit this, because the entire rear axle assembly needs to be replaced and it is very expensive. now that the 2005 model year trucks are getting a bit older, these failures are becoming extremely common and it is only a matter of time until one fails on the freeway and somebody is injured or killed when the vehicle's rear axle locks up due to an exploded spider gear assembly.

I own a 2005 nissan titan pickup which i purchased new. the vehicle has 57,000 miles. my driveway is steep as i live in a remote location. about two weeks ago i was headed to town. the rear end went out and and my titan slid off the roadway. the mechanic who is repairing my vehicle told me this was a very common problem with my model of vehicle. i checked on line and found many similar incidents. i contacted nissan and found there was no recall regarding this. repair cost is now over $2000.

 1. normal, highway and local driving of vehicle. no abusive vehicle treatment. a mechanic was able to do a temporary repair to enable us to drive home and we then took the vehicle to our local garage to have it fully inspected. 2. the front right axle (half-shaft) of the four wheel drive fell out of the front differential unit. had this happened at a higher speed in 4 wheel drive or even 2 wheel drive a loss of vehicle control could occur resulting in a crash. 3. the manufacturer has not issued a recall of the vehicle even though they realize there was a faulty bearing dsesign. the bearing has since been redesigned but vehicles with the defective bearing are still in service. the local vehicle dealer's mechanics have said they have seen these incidents and can replace the bearing at my expense since the vehicle is out of warranty (the vehicle has 76,00 miles -- no offroad -- and the warranty is only good for 60,000). however, this is a manufacturer's defect that is known to the manufacturer and should have been recalled and replaced a long time ago. i am requesting that you investigate this matter as the manufacturer seems to want to ignore this safety issue.

2005 nissan titan crew cab 4x4 with off-road package, within 10,000 miles there were loose bolts on the transfer case. at 38,500 miles the left front differential seal failed and leaked. at 39,800 miles the power steering hose went bad and leaked. at 51,000 miles the circular clip on the axle at front left differential deformed causing axle to begin to fall out of vehicle!!! thankfully all has been covered under our extended warranty, and dealerships have replaced parts, but when it runs out these will come from our pocket, and no one can guarantee the new parts are not just replacements or any better. this could have resulted in death or injury to us or someone else had that axle fell from vehicle, and could occur again.

Took vehicle to nissan dealership for service of growling noise that is becoming increasingly louder. other concern is spinning of individual wheels with loss of traction. dealership advised that rear differential requires replacement, at cost of $4,000.

I had a 2005 nissan titan truck. the real axle seal broke and the oit came into the rear brake when i was on interstae highway from fl back to va. i had to drive so slow to make it back home and had it replace for $500. few weeks later now i have a front drive axle seal broke and oil is leaking. i am bringing to dealer and replace today.

Both rear axle seals leaking. had a complete rear end replacement at 58,000 miles. currently have 100,000 miles and both rear seals are leaking again. i towed a 2990 lbs trailer from michigan to west virginia, the morning after getting home i noticed the leaks and popping in rear end when pulling out. first time towing with this truck. mileage is all highway. commuted 120 miles per day to work. i have been on forums and seen countless others with same problem. nissan is very aware of the problem and will not even make parts available. they are just replacing the entire rear ends. this is a common problem with these trucks and i would like to know why a recall has not been issued for it. not sure what to do other than fix it one more time and then sue under lemon law when it happens again.

Rear axle seal failed on 2005 nissan titan, 59,000 mileage. as a result of the failure, leaking rear differential fluid covered emergency brake pads making them ineffective and unsafe. nissan repair advised repair was fully my responsibility. i had rear seal and bearing replaced by local repair shop.

2005 nissan titan, rear axle seals are leaking, could spray onto brakes and become a major saftey issue. this is a major issue with thousands of nissan titans, if you do an internet search on google for nissan titan axle seal leak, you will find thousands of people with this problem. if these bad axle seals cause fluid to contact brake rotor, it could cause braking issues or accidents. nissan has a tsb# ntb10-032 that discusses this problem, but this needs to be a saftey recall before someone is killed.

Rear axle on my nissan titan is leaking differential fluid all over my brakes for the 3rd time. it is evident that the nissan setup is not doing a good job (bad seals or bad venting causing pressure to destroy the seals. this is a safety issue because the oil seeps onto the brakes once the seals have let go.

Nissan titan 2005 4x4 64,400 miles the rear differential started jerking and popping. took the nissan dealer and they said that the rear differential spider gears failed and the entire rear end would have to be replaced. the cost was $3200.00. this truck is my wife's regular diver and she transports the kids to school in if this had happened at high speed it could have been very dangerous.

I had driven from my college to my chiropractors office without any incidents. when leaving my chiropractors office i was backing out of parking stall with wheels turned to the right. all of a sudden there was a loud pop. being a mechanic i thought that i might have ujoint issues. i climbed under and checked my driveline and everything was in good order. i then drove back to my college where i could get my truck onto a lift and check it out. in the 12 miles from the chiropractors office to the college it had progressed to the point of not being able to drive. it would bind when turning left and drag wheels as thought limited slip was out. or when turning to the left it would sound as though someone had taken a 20 pound sledge hammer and hit the tail shaft of the transmission. the rear axle seals and bearings were replaced at 50,000mi under factory warranty. after reviewing many claims on this differential this was an indication as to the rear diff going out. currently i have 67,000mi on it and on the dealer level they are not willing to replace. have a phone interview with a nissan north america district rep tomorrow and hope to have this cleared up. if not the quote to get a new rear end assembly, since you cannot just order the pumpkin, is $3400.00. i see that there is a huge issue with this and hope that nissan will take care of this. my truck is a 2005 nissan titan le crew cab 4x4 with offroad and tow package. no mods have been done to truck with exception of putting on nerf bars. everything else is what nissan sent it out the doors with. thank you *tr

Column shifter causes damage to wiring harness of the manual mode transmission button. when shifting vehicle into drive, column hits wiring harness, and over time causes wiring to the transmission manual mode button to break. once this breaks, there is no means to down shift vehicle, causing a hazard especially when traveling roads where there are elevation changes. was able to determine the cause of the manual mode button failure by researching nissan titan forums (club titan and titan talk). upon removing steering column shroud immediately noticed chaffing of the wiring harness, and the broken wire. contacted nissan, was given file number 6550464, nissan was not concerned with this issue due to the age (currently 4 years) of the vehicle. *tr

Drive shaft ripped out of the rear differential. a small ever increasing noise coming from the rear of the truck when coasting. from the very start of the noise to complete failure was about 40-miles, but the noise was only loud enough to hear with the windows shut and radio off about 10-miles before complete failure. truck is now at the dealership, chances are good new drive shaft and entire rear differential will be needed. it is entirely possible this failure could have caused a major accident. had the driveshaft not ripped free from the differential, the rear wheels could have locked up, causing the truck to skid out of control. *tr

I own a 2005 nissan titan. the rear differential began to make strange noises so i took it to the nissan dealership. the service tech told me it would have to be replaced at a cost of $2500. the truck had 61,500 miles on it. the dealership said the warranty was only 60,000 miles and refused to replace the part at no cost. i have called nissan customer service and they refused also. the vehicle i purchased had a towing package installed. in my opinion, the lightweight rear axle and differential that nissan installed on these vehicles is inadequate and therefore defective. nissan should replace these parts at no cost to the consumer. *tr

Comment on rear-end failure: rear differential failed leaving a gas station at 10 mph with no trailer disabling driver from having proper control of vehicle with intermittent drive/power-train capabilities and distracting popping/grinding sounds of failed components in rear differential. upon removing rear differential internal gears found both spider gears had numerous teeth broken off while all other internal gears looked normal. nissan1 (case/file#6346683) and my local dealer/service manager offered no warranty replacement help after it was requested. repair from nissan was quoted at $3,604.67 for complete axle assembly replacement and only offers a 12,000 mile x 12 month warranty! vehicle had 69,960 miles at time of defect/malfunction. rear differential upgraded to a detroit truetrac (limited slip differential) at owners expense but to lack of confidence in the nissan rear axle assembly/components and reported failure cases with minimum nissan cooperation! this is a known defect that nissan should be responsible for on all titans. please help! *tr

On my 2005 nissan titan, both of my rear axle seals failed with only 48,000 miles on the vehicle. the fluid leaks axle lubricant by the rear wheels, which gets onto the rear disk brakes, which makes the rear brakes ineffective, especially when pulling a trailer. nissan replaced the seals, however the popular belief of the cause of this is a 1-way valve vent that allows the pressure within the axle to escape, but doesn't let air back into the axle. this occurrence causes a vacuum inside the axle, which pulls on the axle seals and causes them to age prematurely. *tr

I observed a leaking rear seal on the driver's side of my trucks rear axle. the vehicle is currently at the dealer getting a new differential. the service technician stated it was differential fluid. the differential gets too hot and the pressure of the heated liquid forces the seal at the end of the axle to fail. the service technician stated that a new differential had been designed to fix this problem and would be installed on my truck when the new parts arrived. this slick fluid could have impacted braking on this truck due to the rear disc brake rotors being exposed. i caught the leak early and no fluid had contacted the rotors. *tr

Rear axle seals have failed on my 2005 nissan titan. the first time at 41,000 miles (august 07). dealer replaced seals under warranty. they failed again in may 2008 at 56,000 miles. this time the leak soaked the parking break shoes with oil. i was warned by the dealer that the parking break may be ineffective while i waited for parts to be ordered. luckily the leak was caught before the rear disc brake pads were soaked. dealer replaced bearings, axle spacer, snap ring, breather, parking brake shoes, and a gasket under warranty. *tr

To the best of my knowledge the manual shift button simply stopped working. it fails to engage the manual shifting mode for the vehicle transmission which causes excessive rpm in the 4-wheel drive low configuration. a local nissan service dealer reviewed the issue and offered a fix that was not guaranteed to alleviate the problem. the initial fix was estimated to be approximately $500.

3 years ago i bought a 2005 nissan titan with 350 miles on it, so a year later a problem with the rear differential came on, the warranty paid for it, now 2 years later, i am having the same problem with the rear problem, and some mechanics that i have talked to, said that i ve been lucky i haven't crushed because that kind a problem its too dangerous in a truck, it could cause a serious damage to my person or someone else. *tr

Nissan failed to replace a transmission under the 60k powertrain warranty. the truck is currently at 56k miles, and has been out of use since november 11th. the vehicle falls under the north carolina lemon law: as with other lemon laws, it is required that automobile manufacturers repurchase or replace a vehicle that has not been properly repaired within a reasonable number of attempts. in north carolina, this reasonable number is four attempts or if the car has been out of service waiting repair for a cumulative total of 20 or more business days during any 12-month period of the warranty. it has been out since november 11th, and they still want me to pay for the cost of the transmission when they should cover it no questions asked. *tr

Rear axle seal leaking on my 2005 nissan titan with 70,000 miles. this is absurd this trucks rear axle shouldn't be leaking already. i don't even pull or haul anything heavy in this truck. its only driving in town not off road. i was given a quote of $750 to fix the problem and the sels are only $25. then an extra charge of $100 to replace the differential fluid. fluid costs $7. this is an outrage and alot of people with titans are having the same problem. the bad thing is if the leaking fluid get on the brake rotors and pads your brakes could fail causing injuries to myself , my family and other people if they were to go out. *tr

We purchased a truck from nissan in october of 2004. it has been in the shop many times and in december of 2004, it was there over 30 days. the transmission and the rear end have both gone out, windows don't roll up and down correctly, rattling in the cab where the visor and garage door openers are held. the brake, vdc, tow, and abs switch stay on all the time. the brakes are going out and the whole truck shimmies. now in addition to the transmission being replaced once, it's slipping again. nissan stated they would pay for the rental on the 30 days, but that was a lie. they socked me with an $283.00 bill. $181.00 was to fill up the tank with gas!!!!!!! there are also missing valves on the tires they themsleves took off and didn't replace and the alarm goes off by itself when no one is around. give me a break...nissan states this does not qualify for the lemon law. i need help in this situation. *ak

I purchased this 2005 nissan titan new. during a recent oil change and service at 34,150 miles i noticed fluid leaking onto the both sides of the rear brake rotor assemblies. at first i thought it was brake fluid but upon closer examination i discovered it was gear lube from the rear axle. it was leaking past the seals and down the backing plates and dripping onto the wheel and some of that oil being slung onto the brake rotors themselves. i stopped driving the truck since i felt this is now a safety issue and called the dealer. they advised me to bring truck in for inspection which i did on 1/3/08 at 34,206 miles. they confirmed seals are leaking and ordered parts. i asked them to make a note on the service order that i have stopped driving truck unless needed. they then called and told me parts are in and truck was brought in for repair on 1/14/08 at 34,361 miles. the parts that were replaced under warranty are as follows; qty-2 p/n:43070-7s200 axle spacer, qty-2 p/n:40210-7s210 rear bearing, qty-2 p/n:43252-7s200 oil seal, qty-2 p/n:01541-0001u snap-ring and qty-1 999mp-df100p synthetic diff fluid. i am very happy that nissan repaired and covered this under warranty. but, i am very disappointed that this type of failure occured at such low mileage. *tr

2005 nissan titan left rear axle seal failure. on the morning of 8-21-2007 i noticed oil inside my left rear wheel. i climbed under the truck and could see clearly where it had leaked out the end of the axle. the previous day i had been traveling back to my home from a 6 hour trip. i filled up with gas about 3 hours away from home-i did not see any oil in rear wheel (gas cap is next to wheel). problem had to happen after fill-up-this is a major problem because i was traveling at night,70 mph on interstate. if all fluid had of leaked out ,that could be catastrophic at that time. also i do not think that it is safe for diff oil to be leaking on rear brake disks. i know that nissan is having problems with these seals on titan trucks and think they should be made to come up with a lasting repair before somebody gets killed or injured. my local dealer replaced the leaking seal. *tr

During the most recent oil change, i was directed by the technician to the back side of the rear wheels, both sides. from this vantage point, you can easily see that lubrication from the rear axle is leaking onto the rear brake rotor assembly via the axle end seals. i immediatley contacted nissanusa and have been attempting to get answers from them as to what, if anything they will do to rectify this condition. my extended service plan has recently expired. according to internet forums for nissan titans, there have been numerous problems with this and it appears to be a safety hazard. nissanusa continues to give me the run around by avoiding any dialogue.

During a recent oil change, the technician pointed out the axle end seals were leaking onto the rear brake rotor assembly on my se king cab. this reduces the brake's ability to stop. i currently have 81,000 miles on this 2005 model. my extended warranty ran out at 75,000 miles just about 6 weeks ago and this problem was probably happening during the warranty but i didn't notice it as i change my own oil myself most of the time. after looking over the internet, i have found that this is a common problem among the titans. nissan should address this problem as they did the brake problem. *ak

We own a titan and are satisfied but had some issues as can be expected with a newly designed vehicle. each has been taken care of under warranty from our dealer alan jay of sebring florida, a very professional operation i might add. the one most recent of concern caused brake interruption and when i inspected the brake system one of the rear brakes appeared to be leaking, which i suspected that to be the problem. the dealer determined that it was a rear axle seal and replaced both the seal and the bearing which had become damaged. after checking the internet i have found this to be a quite common problem that has been overlooked. we use this vehicle daily for business and already have 44,000 miles on it and it is not yet two years old. my concern is my warranty will run out with exceeded miles brfore the time limit and the other axle can have the same problem. why did they only change one? i would like the other side changed as they are identical in design. please respond to my request, this can be dangerous situation. *tr

I have a 2005 nissan titan off road package. i bought it with 55,000 miles on it. at purchase, i bought a 3rd party extended warranty(cna) that covers up to 100,000 miles or 3 years which ever comes first. my truck hit 75,422 miles and i noticed that it made a click noise once in a while when i made a left turn. made an appointment with my mechanic and found out that the rear differential blew. i contacted the dealership which i bought it from. i was told that they had no dealings with nissan brand and i would have to have it towed to a nissan dealership to get it evaluted. i had it towed to a nissan dealership. they contacted the 3rd party warranty co. and was told that it will not be covered, because i had no paperwork that the truck was serviced at 50,000 miles for the differential. nissan told me that they and the warranty company couldn't do anything for me and if wanted to get the truck fixed, i would have to cough up 4,000 dollars to replace the whole rear axle. being so feed up with them, i decided to give this job to my mechanic which he projected to only cost 2,100 dollars. i have always been a loyal nissan customer, but nissan really looks out for their best interest and not their customer. once my truck is fixed, i will be trading it in for a chevy silverado 1500.

I'm the original owner of a 2005 nissan titan 4x4 with 75k miles. i've taken it to the dealership for every recommended service and on 3/31/2011 i noticed a clunking in the rearend while making sharp turns. i took it into the dealer and he told me that it would cost over $2700 to replace the rear differential. he had found metal chunks in the differential fluid. i baby my truck, i don't tow and i don't 4x4. i cannot accept the fact that this should be my responsibility to pay for. this is quite clearly a factory defect. i've owned, chevy and dodge pickups and never once had a rearend problem. i contacted nissan usa was and explained my story. the dealership then told me they had spoken with nissan usa and they were leaving me with a $1500 bill to pay. i expressed my extreme disappointment with their decision. i then called consumer affairs at nissan to tell them why they'd be losing my business. she then called me back to tell me that there had been a misunderstanding and that i was to cover the dealership labor costs of $353. i accepted her offer. about an hour later, i received another call from that same lady's supervisor claiming that the first lady misinformed me and that i owed $1500. i was shocked and disgusted at the same time. i spoke with this supervisor for a while trying to reason with her, but it was futile. she wasn't interested in what i was saying. i asked to speak with her supervisor, but she insisted she was the top decision maker. she said she had no supervisor, so i asked her if she was the president of the company to which she replied no. based on this interaction and lack of care for the customer. i will never place my trust or dollars in nissan again. i will also tell everyone i know to stay away from this company.

I just purchased my titan a little over a month ago. i noticed about two weeks after the purchase a pop sound when turning. this sound was heard maybe once everyother day. day before yesterday i was turning from a stop sign when the truck popped, this time extremly loud and a shutter was felt. i thought someone had hit me. i then made the next turn aprox.1/2 mile down the road to the gas station. once more the truck popped when turning. i stopped and got out to look under the rear end to see if i could spot and damage from the area the noise was coming from. nothing was visible. i then secured my son in the truck so we could try to go home. i thought to myself, im going to make a circle around the parking lot before getting out on the highway. i put the truck in gear and had made it about 20 ft when i felt and heard the rear tires lock then release twice. i quickly parked, popping 2 or3 time while turning to make the parking space. i then called for a tow truck. after waiting 21/2hrs i had the truck towed to the nearest nissan dealership. the next day i contacted the dealership to follow up on the problems i was having. i was told that i was receive a call before any repares were done. aprom. 3hrs later i received a call stating that the rear diffrential had gone out and would need to be replaced. i was then informed that this was a oem part and that the whole assembly had to be purchased. the individual parts were not avalible due to the truck being newer. total cost for parts and labor 3,700 dollars plus tax. then to make matters worse i found out that the parts had to be shipped in. with the weekend in the near future i was told that it could take a week to get the parts and have to truck up and going. i am currently getting a second opinion. did i mention that i havent even made the first payment on this truck?!! thought i would be safe buying a truck with only 68000 miles on it.

2005 nissan titan was driving down a rural road. stopped on the side of the road and when to resume driving. when left tires went back on pavement the whole truck shuddered and the rear end (differential, spider gears, etc) basically blew up. truck was half in the traffic lane. a new rear end is being installed with oem parts.
06/07/201070000
There was a noise from the rear of the truck and an odd odor. it almost felt like a transmission slip once in a while while driving. i drove it home as the noise was getting worse and had it towed to the dealer. their tech drove it off the lot to check it out after i told them about the problem and that it was getting worse. the rear end blew out and sprayed fluid all over the undercarriage, the back of the tailgate, everywhere. the dealer just said it had to be replaced. period. this truck is well mlaintained by the same dealership and i am told that the rear end/differential is sealed at the factory and is not a part of a maintenance item. it is not used for towing, off roading or anything else like that. i am the only one who drives the truck. i think it would have been very dangerous had it gone out while i was driving it. the dealership had to have it towed back to the shop. it is my understanding that this is a rather common problem based on the complaints that have been filed. it is also an expensive problem at $2300.00 in my estimation. i requested that they keep the part for further evaluation.

While driving my 2005 nissan titan se crewcab 4x4 this past weekend, i heard loud banging noises coming from underneath the truck. shortly thereafter, while making a left turn (at low speed), i noticed the left rear tire locked up completely. this same symptom continued through the next day so i scheduled an appointment and dropped off my truck this morning (tuesday, november 16, 2010) at the nisan dealer in melbourne, fl. the dealership told me i needed to replace the entire rear differential and it would cost me around $3,400 plus tax. i only have 79,732 miles on the truck, don

The rear axle seal on my nissan titan was leaking oil on the rear brakes and the fluid level was extremely low. not sure how often this failure occurs, but now that i am aware of rear axle seal leak problems i will monitor for the failure. the local nissan dealership replaced a bearing, spacer, and rear oil seal. after researching nissan titan rear axle seal leaks there appears to be a trend of rear axle seal failures. the problem needs to be addressed by the manufacture before serious accidents occur.

2005 nissan titan se 4x4 - requires an entire rear end replacement. no known events leading up to the failure; rear differential was making major banging and grinding noises. mechanic found it to be full of metal chunks and shards due to a gear failure. this then led to a chain reaction damaging the majority of the rear axle components. truck has not been repaired yet, but nissan tells me that it will require a whole new rear end costing almost $4000. i can ask that the service dept. to hold on to the old parts once the repairs are performed.

Continuing problems with 2005 nissan titan. current issue is failing rear axle. i have complained numerous times about this problem i.e. whinning, clunk but have been told that this is normal as vehicle ages. indicated to local dealer problems reported with failing axles, and axle seals and axle breather problems. they indicated they were unaware of very many such problems. noise and clunk became worse and i began to investigate via web and through my organization membership (club titan) and discovered a large number of customers with similar issues. back to local dealership who finally admitted known issues with axles. past warranty at this point, they recommended contacting nissan north america. called and described issues, they assigned file # and asked me to obtain additional diagnosis (which i had to again pay for) and information about any previous nissan vehicles owned. before i was able to obtain the requested information, nissan called back and denied any assistance citing age/mileage of vehicle. i indicated that this has been an ongoing problem, not just something that has occured after the warranty. they called back several days later and indicated that there is no record anywhere of any complaints on my part regarding the axle problem. seems strange that other history exists (brake problems, recalls, etc.) on my vehicle, but oddly nothing about axle problems. we are moving soon, and i cannot afford the out of pocket repairs, but i cannot put my family at risk of serious injury or death.

I have a 2005 nissan titan 4x4 with the off road package. on the 3rd of october 2010 i noticed when i took a left turn and accelerated through the turn i heard a popping sound and the rear of the truck hopped. on the 4th i took it to the nissan dealer to trouble shoot the problem. i was told the rear differential had broken teeth and it is a recuring problem. the truck only has 44,000 miles on the odometer. my factory warranty expired in june 2010. first time failure has occured. the extended warranty company evaluated the problem and sent a used part to the repair facility to correct the problem. i am currently waiting to have it replaced and returned to me.

I have a 2005 nissan titan le crew cab 4wd pickup truck and just experienced a dangerous failure of the rear differential. after some initial thumping sounds eminating from the rear of the vehicle during turns, i was turning into a busy intersection when the entire rear end locked up momentarily. i was able to limp to an auto repair facility about a block away. after inspecting the vehicle, it was determined that the gears in the rear differential had failed (teeth broken off). vehicle is currently being repaired at a cost of over $3,000. i will save the failed part. after research on the web, this appears to be a very common and expensive occurance. given the nature of the failure (rear wheel locking), i was almost rear ended by another vehicle behind me.

I was driving home from work in my 2005 nissan titan (se crew cab 4x4 off-road edition with tow package) and started hearing a loud metal on metal sound from the rear of the truck. i also could feel a large jolt when accelerating and braking. i took the vehicle to the local nissan dealership the next morning and they said i needed a new rear differential, and that i also needed to replace the seal on the front differential. they told me that it would cost $3,500 to replace the rear differential and $400 to fix the front differential. the truck has only 67,000 miles on it, and is out of warranty. i have had all the recommended services on the vehicle, and do not use the vehicle for off-roading, nor do i use the vehicle to tow. nissan said they would only contribute a thousand dollars toward the repair. the dealership ordered the parts today. this is yet another titan to add to the rear differential problems list.

05 nissan titan - clunking sound i thought was a u-joint is my rear end fixing to go. right rear seal leaking differential fluid on my rear brakes safety hazard. if my rear end went out while driving 70mph which i do every day. it could be very dangerous maybe fatal result. i have a 6 and 4 year old that are with me everyday in the truck. well known problem that nissan needs to fix!
04/15/201036000
The axle seals on the nissan titan began to leak and many other nissan titan owners have had this same problem. mine began to leak at 36k miles but i have seen others leak as early as 18k miles. this is a common problem that needs to be addressed properly and fixed. the differential fluid that leaks out, leaks onto the brakes and can cause them to fail. i noticed my axle seal was leaking after my brakes started to squeak, grind, and jolt the truck back and forth while braking. this has been a problem with my 2005 nissan titan and the problem continues to occur in newer models. i love the truck but this problem needs to be fixed properly. right now i am in the process of replacing the seal through my nissan dealership but the problem is still prone to happen.

Rear diff went out on my 2005 nissan titan. it was well maintained and it went out at 87k miles. this is ridiculous that nissan will not step up and pay for the item that is obviously a defect. look at all the complaints. i think it is time for a class action lawsuit.

No events have led to the failure of the rear end of my 2005 titan 4x4. dealer has identified leaking fluid from the rear axel/seals. rearend (axel) failure is immenant and will be sustantial. this same issue has been reported by many titan owners and presents a driving danger on the road. i can't afford the $3000 plus to replace the rear axel. vehicle has only 58,000 miles. this failure is due to defective internal parts, bearings, etc. in the rear axel of these titans trucks.

While rolling from a stop driving a nissan 2005 titan truck with 84,200 miles on it, i heard a noise and subsequent clanging sound. later that day i investigated the sound and determined it was coming from the rear of the vihicle and the problem was probably the rear differential. i took it to a nissan dealer who later determined that the pinion gear loss a tooth/teeth. after further investigation i determined the only way to fix the problem was toi install the whole rear end assembly including housing, gears, and axels costing $3100 at the nissan dealer. there is a safety problem with nissan which needs to be investigated.

2005 nissan titan 121000 miles. normal driving conditions. noticed oil on the inside of the right rear fender well after driving 50 miles on the interstate. upon further investigation revealed oil dripping from the axle tube onto the inside of the rim. right rear axle seal failed and oil is slinging onto brake caliper, truck is parked and oil is dripping onto the inside of the rim collecting and will sling out onto tire, brake caliper and exhaust tail pipe. left rear axle seal is begining to leak. repair is new seals, bearings, spacer, retianing clip, bearing retainer.
03/22/2010
Right and left rear axle seals blew out and leaked differential fluid. differential fluid leaking on rear brake rotors which could cause brake failure, which was a major safety concern to me. bought used on 3/22/2010 with 61,611 miles on vehicle. no suspension modifications had been done to vehicle. also, the rear differential oil will slowly leak and cause the rear differential to lose fluid and fail. as this seemed to be a very common problem with the nissan titan, nissan should address this issue and offer a permanent fix so we would not be faced with the safety issue in the future.

Rear differential on 2005 nissan titan broke while traveling at highway speeds. in researching online it seems that this is a chronic problem with nissan titans around the 50k -85k mile range. believe this should become a recall issue as this could have severe consequences if the rear end locks up when it breaks at speed.

I was driving my 2005 nissan titan. i made a turn onto an on ramp going about 15 miles an hour when it felt like i was hit from behind by another vehicle. i looked and no one was there. my truck started making a really bad popping noise so i had it towed to meineke where they informed me that the rear differential was out. so i then had it towed to a nissan dealership where they gave me the same diagnosis and denied my claim for them to fix it. price tag for the repair is 3300 not including taxes. *tr

Nissan titan front & rear differential failure - i purchased the nissan titan - off road/big tow package in july 2005 and primarily used the vehicle on the road. experienced a slight clicking noise in the front end and brought it to my dealer. the dealer informed me that the front differential was damaged and the right front axle was not attached to the differential. while at the dealer i asked them to check the clunking noise from the rear end. first they stated nothing was wrong and then 24 later after considerate prompting the dealer informed me that the rear end need to be replaced. nissan usa paid for the front differential (parts only) and has rejected my request to replace the rear differential. based on the number of complaints on this site and other sites nissan needs to step up to this issue. *tr

I stopped at a stop sign and when i pulled away at approximately 30 mph i thought i was rearended by another vehicle. i pulled into a gas station and the rearend was popping and grinding. i got out of the vehicle to inspect and did not see any fluid or signs of damage to the driveline. i tried to back up and pull forward and the rear wheels were locked up. the vehicle stopped so violently when it happened if i had been going any faster i am sure there would have been an accident or i would have been injured. vehicle was towed to dealer for repairs. dealer said repair will be to replace the complete rearend at a cost of $3500.00 for a used unit. *cn

2005 nissan titan, driving on gravel road in 4wd and i had gotten stuck in 1 inch of snow. i realized that my 4wd was not working any longer. i exited my truck and got to the top of the hill just in time to stop on coming traffic that could of struck my truck and caused serious injury to me and my passenger. i contacted the dealership where i had purchased it, and they are unable to locate a new or used front differential for the truck. the whole differential needs replaced and here i am still waiting for the part but they are unable to locate any. i have noticed on several threads and forums that i am not the only one with this problem. it has happened to hundreds if not thousands of people across the us. this problem needs to be resolved, by the manufacturer in my opinion. *tr

I have a 2005 nissan titan 4wd with 57660 miles. while taking my vehicle to the dealership for service, i experienced a rear end failure. the roads were wet from rain. when i started off in a right turn from the stoplight, the rear end started to clunk and the truck was jerky. i let off the accelerator to see if the problem corrected itself, but upon re-accelerating the same thing occurred. i let off the accelerator once again and let the vehicle coast down the hill, still clunking and jerking. once the vehicle was in a straight position, the rear end jerked really hard, and then i continued about a 1/2 mile to the dealership with no further incident. while at the dealership, the truck was moved from the service bay to a parking space and the attendant noticed that the rear end was jerking and clunking in a turning position. he parked the vehicle and advised the service adviser. upon inspection by the dealer, it was determined that the spider gears were damaged and needed to be replaced. the dealer determined that the entire rear end housing should be replaced rather than trying to replace the internal mechanisms. the repair was covered under the factory warranty with 2340 miles left on the warranty. the factory warranties the new rear end housing for a period of 12 months or 12000 miles. this vehicle has been extremely well maintained, and has never been driven off-road. there was no prior indication that a problem existed until the very moment it stared to fail on this day. upon returning to the dealer to pick up the vehicle, the service adviser did agree that this was an ongoing problem with this truck and that this particular dealership had replaced multiple rear ends in this model truck in recent months. we are concerned that this same failure could occur again. this could result in a serious accident occurring should the failure occur at highway speeds. *tr

Rear end failure in 2005 nissan titan. there were no events leading up to the failure. a popping sound started coming out of the rear end of my truck. upon looking for problem noticed rear seal on driver side had failed. took the truck to dealership and was informed i needed a new rear end which cost $3400 being it had 66,000 miles on it. waiting on nissan for an answer on a complaint i made. *tr

Rear differential failure at 68,000 miles with normal driving and occasional light towing (3500 lbs travel trailer). i detected a worsening whirring sound coming from the rear differential. dealer recommends complete replacement of rear axle assembly and further states the vehicle is unsafe to operate in it's present condition. *tr

During visit for oil change and tire rotation, a service center pointed out that the driver's side real axle shaft seal was leaking. took it to the dealer and was informed that since the vehicle had 68,000 miles on it, the repair would not be covered by warranty. the back-side of the rotor was saturated with differential fluid. additionally, the emergency brake shoes were completely saturated with differential fluid, reducing the ability of the parking brake to hold the vehicle. took vehicle to service center for repair which included replacement of the axle shaft seal, axle shaft bearing, axle shaft bearing spacer, and parking brake shoe & lining. it should also be noted that the rear pinion seal failed at 16,700 miles and was replaced under warranty. *tr

2005 nissan titan rear axle seals and differential failure. the rear differential failed on my nissan titan about 7 months ago. now i'm having problems with the rear axle seals leaking. according to the local dealers this seams to be a common problem with all nissan titans from 2004-2007 with the seals and differentials breaking down. *tr

While driving my 2005 nissan titan at approx. 45 miles an hour the rear differential locked up and i was fish tailing all over the road and was fortunate to have no hit someone or crashed the truck. 3rd member spit the driveline right out and now my mechanic is telling me nearly $4,000.00 to fix it. i only have 94,000 miles on it. nissan should do something about this before someone gets killed. *tr

 1. there were no know events apparent before the failure. 2. rear axle seal has failed on my 2005 nissan titan le 4x4 at 57,000 miles. axle lube is everywhere on drivers side rim, tire and brake components. there is also noticeable blow by on the tailgate and i'm sure lube has been dissipated to vehicles that have been behind me on the highway. this will lead to a failure of brake effectiveness and vision issues with following vehicles. 3. i am in the process of getting the truck in the shop to fix the problem. *tr

Took 2005 nissan titan pickup with 36,600 miles to dealer for rear axle seal leak. this is a huge problem with nissan!! this happens regularly. dealer replaced ,bearing ,spacer, snap ring, seal under power train warranty. 5 years or 60,000 mi. this is a huge problem !! i think they should offer a long extended warranty for free to titan owners!! *tr

I noticed a knock when i was taking hard left turns. tried driving it to work a few days later and on my way in to work (another left turn) i heard a loud pop almost like i hit a pot hole or something, but there was nothing on the road. that night on my way home(approx. 1 mile) took my final left turn - loud cracking noise and tires squealed-also slipped out of gear completely for a few seconds. mechanic said the spyder gears in the rear diff. have lost their teeth. nissan will only sell the whole diff. which costs $2000 plus tax and labor. not cool. there were no accidents or property damage only because i was in my condos driveway and there were no cars in the parking lot. *tr

I have a nissan titan kingcab 4x4 with 36,000 miles. it started making noises when i would turn a corner in town, this kept getting worse, and then started sounding like gears were jumping teeth, and the pickup would jerk when this happened. three days latter it became extremely severe and would make a loud noise from the rearend, and jerk even with starting slowly from a start. i took it to the nissan dealer as it was still under warranty, and they told me that the rearend was bad and needed replaced. i was also told by the nissan dealer that 60 other nissan dealers in the us were waiting for rearends to fix this problem also. my pickup has been in the shop for 3 weeks and the dealer can't tell me when they will have a rearend to fix it. *tr

Was hearing the rear end humming for a little while when on may 6, 2009 my 2005 nissan titan's rear differential gave out in the middle of making a left hand turn in a busy intersection. got very close to getting hit on drivers side, drivers had to maneuver around me going at least 50 mph. it kicked back in and was able to pull off the road. continued to lock up on me afterwards, it is now in shop getting the rear differential replaced. *tr

Rear differential binds up when cornering and sometime on straight aways. *tr
04/25/2009497001
Drive shaft ripped out of the rear differential. a small ever increasing noise coming from the rear of the truck when coasting. from the very start of the noise to complete failure was about 40-miles, but the noise was only loud enough to hear with the windows shut and radio off about 10-miles before complete failure. truck is now at the dealership, chances are good new drive shaft and entire rear differential will be needed. it is entirely possible this failure could have caused a major accident. had the driveshaft not ripped free from the differential, the rear wheels could have locked up, causing the truck to skid out of control. *tr

2005 nissan titan 66,000 miles (90% highway). problem began 03/27/09 while making right hand turn truck began slipping and bucking on the left rear came close to accident, drove to nissan dealer and was told by a mechanic that there have been multiple issues with the rear end differentials. after looking at the truck the whole rear end needs to be replaced (4500.00) and the front end is leaking (350.00). i have never towed anything nor been off road. this is unacceptable for any vehicle especially when you see all of the complaints. this should be a re-call. *tr

Front drive shaft on my 2005 nissan titan se king cab binded up according to nissan dealership, thus creating vibration in the front of the truck and thereby destroying the oil seal and corresponding bearings in the four wheel drive transfer case. all told, my truck sits in a repair shop needing new front hubs (r and l), a new front drive shaft, and a new transfer case. the cost of the repair is substantial, around four thousand dollars. i am not sure if my third party extended warranty will cover the damages or not. i am awaiting word from the warranty company to discover what indeed they will cover before i have the truck repaired.

*tr

At 66,000 miles the rear end spider gears disintegrated causing extensive damage to the pinion gears as well. nissan does not provide parts for this- but require the customer to purchase the entire rear end which costs $2800.00. i am 6000 miles outside the warranty but they will not consider any type of compensation for a known defect in the gear material and poor quality. my nissan service writer submitted a request and was denied by nissan. *tr

Early december 06 - i noticed fluid under front differential. investigated and found that stub shaft (which bolts to front cv) had pulled out of the front differential on the driver's side. pushed it back in but oil seal had been damaged so it was still leaking. took it into the dealership but they wouldn't cover under warranty due to aftermarket lift (even though they sell a version of my truck with this lift installed by the factory). paid $380 to get a new seal installed. late december 06 - 2 weeks after repair i found fluid under the truck again. pushed it back in and leak stopped. january 07 - while in mexico, my wife was driving 4wd on hard packed sand. i heard a loud bang and when i looked under the truck i found that the same shaft was out again. turns out the shaft has splines and a small circlip to hold it in place. the circlip is undersized so it only takes about 1 pound of force to separate the 2 pieces. this most recent time occurred under load so when the shaft shot out, the splines got damaged. since i was a day's drive south of the border i had to file and then hammer the shaft back into place. nissan denied my warranty, again blaming the lift for the problem. i found several other people online who have had the same problem, most without lifts. i talked to a technician at a nissan dealership in oregon and he confirmed that he has seen several front differentials with this problem. he suspected that the cv joints don't stretch as well when weather is cold thereby pulling the stub shafts out when the wheels are turned. most vehicles he had seen were stock. he also said that nissan had a redesigned differential that the tech's are supposed to install when this happens. i contacted nissan customer service and made an appointment with a factory rep. nissan finally agreed to do a one-time front differential replacement under warranty. *jb

I started my truck, put in gear and it made a very ugly noise in the rear. i tried drive and reverse and it did the same thing in both gears. i called nissan, had them tow it and they ended up replacing the entire rear end. i only had 30k on my truck with mostly highway miles.*jb

*jb

While turning out of a parking space, multiple loud clunks came from the rear of the truck and the truck hesitated as if the rear axel was binding. upon review it was determined that the rear differential was binding whenever the wheels became out of sync (steering left or right even slightly). this could have been disastrous if occurring in the street and not a parking lot. i have researched and found many complaints of the same issue. something must be done to prompt nissan to acknowledge this problem and fix it. this is a dealer repair only issue as no aftermarket replacement parts can be found. with nissan replacement differentials at $3000.00 each, i'm sure nissan would not mind keeping a lid on this issue so we can keep buying their parts. it's time something was done before anyone seriously gets hurt when their vehicle abruptly stops in harms way due to a known common failure in the driveline. *nm

The rear differential failed on my 2005 nissan titan crew cab 4x4 off road le. the failure started under normal driving conditions with a clunking sound in the rear differential while conducting slow speed turns. within a day after symptoms surfaced the differential completely failed and was not drivable. *nm

My 2005 nissan titan 4x4 crew cab le has 26,000 miles on it. extremely well taken care of and never driven hard. i was driving down the road and the rear differential locked up and made an huge bang noise. almost caused an accident. i was barely able to get it off the highway. i had it towed to the dealership. they are replacing the rear differential assembly. if you search on the internet, thousands of people are having the front and rear differentials blow up on the 2004-2005 nissan titans. this should be a recall. *nm

While exiting the freeway, the rear differential began shuddering very badly, making loud metallic snapping noises. the truck would barely move out of the intersection(10 mph maximum).very, very scary considering rush hour traffic!dealership said the entire differential had failedand they would emergency overnight an entire new rear-end. that was 2 days ago, and the dealership called today and said it might be ready tomorrow. i have only 20k miles on my truck ,and it has led a rather easy life(no abuse, towing, etc.),the dealership still won't tell me what caused the failure,or if i will have access to the old parts. *jb

I was driving my 2005 nissan titan kc 4x4 with the off road package and came to a stop behind a vehicle that was packed in the lane that i was driving in. when it was safe to move into the left lane i accelerated and heard large clanking noises and felt my truck jerked as if i was being rear ended repeatedly. to my surprise i was not being rear ended. my differential was locking; my wheels will rotate and then stop rotating. the situation got worse when i tried to take either a right or left turn. *nm

I was driving down the road, when the rear-end, locked up, and there was a loud bang followed by a violent jerking motion. all i could hear was metal on metal grinding and my transmission grinding to a halt. since the rear end has failed, the transmission has a shuddering to it between 30-35 mph and the steering has been off in the truck as well. it is hard to maintain control sometimes, and the dealer does not want to help fix the problem. the dealer has replaced the rear-end, but the shuddering and steering problems are still prevalent, and the answers i seem to be getting from the dealer is that it is my fault, my problem, and that i am looking for things for them to fix!!!!*jb

I have a 2005 nissan titan 4x4 that seems to be bugged by parts failures (gremlins as the dealer likes tp call them). the first problem (brakes) happened at about 2 weeks old or 1000 miles. the dealer immediately fixed the problem(so they said). about 1 month later the same problem occurred. again the dealer fixed it. at about 5 months old (8000 miles) the rear end seems to fall apart. when i brought it to the dealer they said it is a common problem. that when they fix it, they will put the upgraded rear end in, which took about 2 weeks to have done. at about 7 months old (14000 miles) while on vacation in florida, the steering column decided to fall apart, causing me to loose steering and almost crash. now i had to bring it to a new dealer down in florida (who did not want to take the truck in for repair, but after a long conversation with nissan of north america took it in, for 3 weeks to fix the problem). now after 10 months (16000 miles) of owning the truck, the rear end has broken again. it is at the dealer once again, where i was told the parts are (vor ordered) back ordered with no date of arrival. i love this truck but just don't know what to do anymore. *nm

Rear differential failure (2005 nissan titan, 12,800 miles) - there were very few signs leading up to the failure of the read differential. i noticed some loud thuds coming from the drivetrain as i accelerated. then within about 0.5 miles of driving, the thuds were louder and much more frequent, and the truck was noticeably struggling to move. i immediately parked it and had it towed to the dealership. they are replacing the rear axle assembly (the damage is in the rear differential, but apparently nissan just replaces the entire rear axle assembly). the axle assembly is back ordered for 2 weeks. *jb

Pulled up to stop sign with no previous indication of problem. when i proceeded to turn left, the rear differential started making loud clunking noises and slipped in and out of engagement. i was able to put truck in 4 wheel drive to get it to dealership. *jb the problem has not yet been corrected as nissan states i need a new rear differential and they are on national back order. they can give me no estimate as to when i will get my vehicle back.

 1. was turning out of parking lot and in the middle of the turn i heard a clank, then loss of power. i regained power momentarily, but was not sure what exactly had happened. i then drove home, about 1/2 a mile, and called the dealership. the dealership then asked me to take my truck to them, about 4-5 miles away. the dealership recognized that something was wrong, but soonest available time to look at it was after the weekend. i left the truck at the dealership because i did not feel comfortable driving it the way it was then. 2. the failure ended up being the rear differential and since there has been a national back-order it has left me without transportation until the dealership could receive the parts and install them. i would not be able to get to the store to buy food. 3. the dealership ordered replacement parts for what was broken and they paid for myself to have a rental car while i wait for the parts to come in and get put in. *nm

Rear differential failure during normal driving. vehicle had 9,000 miles. upon taking a right turn a loud clank was heard by myself and passengers from the rear of the vehicle. on my way home i realized that one tire was not maintaining traction even through slow turns, and the clanking recurred every so often. took vehicle to the dealer the next day and he agreed that rear differential would be replaced. they did an excellent job of replacing the unit in 8 days, however it was a major inconvenience to be without the car for that period.*ak

Catastrophic rear differential failure. was leaving work and everything seemed fine, came to stop at stopsign, hit throttle to go and bang, the rear blew. afterwards the truck would not move, but the driveshaft was spinning and bad grinding and clunking sounds could be heard. i'm sure nissan is going to replace the axel assembly although it is still in the shop. i have corresponded with others who have had this happen, and the rear is always replaced as a unit, and nissan isn't really acnowledging that a problem exists, although some have gone through 3 rear ends. as far as i know, they all have the electronic locking differential option. nobody was hurt, but i wouldn't want to see what would happen if it failed on the highway. *nm

No prior events leading to failure. the vehicle was driven normally according to manufacturers recommended procedure. the rear differential of my 2004 nissan titan broke 4 times, first time was at 6,000 miles, then every 3,000 miles there after. nissan then replaced free of charge with a 2005 in which the rear differential has now broke 1 time. when the differential breaks the vehicle is immobilized and sometimes left in harms way (i.e. unable to get out of the middle of an intersection, towing downhill and the differential breaks making the vehicle very hard to stop) nissan has replaced 3 rear differentials in the 2004 vehicle. they then gave a new 2005 nissan titan to me. nissan has repaired 1 rear differential in this vehicle. i do not trust this vehicle and feel unsafe driving it as i am not sure when the next failure will happen. the incident date below is the most recent one.*jb
