DP03005NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.07/11/200307/29/2003BRAKE ROTOR WARPAGE
Mr. kent jones of kernersville, nc, submitted a petition to nhtsa by e-mail dated july 1, 2003, requesting nhtsa to investigate the brake rotors on my 2002 nissan xterra vehicles.the petitioner alleged that the brake rotors in these vehicles were defective because the rotors overheat and warp from normal usage.a review of odi's database for complaints regarding my 2001 through my 2003 nissan xterra vehicles identified only two reports related to brake rotor warping; one for a my 2001 and one for a my 2002.the complaint for the my 2002 nissan xterra was reported by the petitioner.brake rotor warping can result in brake pulsation and shaking when the brake is applied.brake pulsation, tire or suspension vibration, and similar conditions are an obvious annoyance to the driver, but generally do not cause a driver to lose control of a vehicle.furthermore, even if left uncorrected, any potential increase in stopping distance will be negligible. therefore, this condition does not normally constitute a safety defect, even if it occurs with far more often frequency. in view of the foregoing, it is unlikely that nhtsa would issue an order for the notification and remedy of an alleged safety-related defect as defined by the petitioner in the my 2002 nissan xterra vehicles at the conclusion of an investigation.therefore, in view of the need to allocate and prioritize nhtsa's limited resources to best accomplish the agency's safety mission, the petition is denied.

While driving 55mph, my rear axle broke causing the wheel to fly off, loss of control, and obvious damage to the car. i later found out that there was a abs recall for this identical problem, but i was never informed of the recall. after 4 weeks, i have been told the nissan will cover the repair of the vehicle, but that is all. i would like to know if there is anything else i can or should pursue for negligence on behalf of the corporation and the dealer. i was extremely fortunate that myself and my 2 year old were not seriously injured or killed in this accident, and feel someone should be held acountable.

On 09/10/03, while driving at a slow rate of speed my vehicle experienced total braking failure with loss of all pressure in the brake pedal. fortunately, this did not result in a collision. the vehicle was towed to tamaroff nissan where analysis was performed and the following explanation offered: i was told that through normal wear on the brake pads the metal-to-metal contact created excessive heat causing the calipers to seize the rotor creating damage to both the rotor and calibers resulting in a major loss of function. an estimate of repairs of greater than $940.00 was provided. i am questioning this explanation and am requesting formal investigation not only due to the expensive repair, but the potential for major safety implications if this is in fact a part of normal wear at 25,000 miles. i am requesting that this situation be investigated under the ongoing nhtsa investigation of nissan xtera rotor failure action number dp03-005 opened 07/11/03. i find the explanation difficult to accept in as much as the event occurred after driving only approximately 1,000 feet on the property of william beaumont hospital. it is implausible that excessive heat could have caused the seizure of the nissan north america inc. page two september 11, 2003 brake calibers on the rotor. on at least two occasions the vehicle was serviced at the same dealership when complaints of a noise from the left front wheel while turning to the right were addressed. in addition, a burning smell was described and addressed. a vehicle inspection at the dealership at 17,180 miles was also performed with no indication of any brake problem.

Purchased in november of 2006 and in may 2008 as i was attempting to stop at a traffic light in the city only doing about 10 mph. the wheel jerked really funny and there was a noise coming from the brakes. upon attempting to go my car wouldn't pick up speed and was making a rubbing noise. limped into garage where they showed me my calipers were locked up. had both calipers, brakes and rotors replaced. october 2009, driving at 55 mph, started smelling burnt rubber smell, check engine light came on so i pulled over to have it towed. thought it was overheating even though gauge did not indicate that. garage stated i needed a new brake line so had it replaced and on the way home i began smelling that horrible smell again so i decided to take to another garage where they showed me my caliper was locked up just enough to heat the rotor up. had calipher and brakes replaced. april 2010, just from past experiences i knew what the rubbing noise and loss of power meant. sure enough driver's side calipher was locked up. had calipher, brakes and new brake hose put on. july 2011, yet again my caliper is locked up. so as i am typing this its back in for the usual. in almost every instance there were no warning signs of failure until it became extreme. i contacted nissan but they stated its the usual wear and tear. i have never heard of replacing calipers every year under normal driving conditions.

My brakes were losing power with the brake pedal feeling 'mushy' and brake light on. the dealer, maita nissan, advised me that the spare tire, had rubbed a hole in the brake lining going to the rear brake drums. nissan did not feel that they were responsible, because the spare tire was oversized, compared to the recommended tire size (sears had installed a wrangler p26570s17 to spare tire compartment on 9/21/2004). per nissan, the recommended tire was p266565,17. fortunately, the loss of hydraulic fluid and loss of braking fluid did not lead to a crash or injury. as you might imagine, as the owner, i did not authorize sears to install the wrong size tire to my vehicle and am certain that they have no idea that the consequence of this error could lead to rubbing a hole in the braking system 4 years later. i requested that the dealer notify nissan of the incident, and was told that this was not a warranty issue and have no knowledge that other nissan xterra se owners will benefit from my experience (the se series came from the factory with a 17 inch custom tire and rim which is a set-up for this type of error and sentinel event). *tr

I have a 2002 nissan xterra that had brake squeals since about 9000 miles. i have repeatedly taken it to the dealer to have the problem fixed/inspected. i was told that the squeal is a result of the type of brakes and that they were just cold. the problem is that the brakes squeal all the time. i was then told on another visit that it was the drive belt and not the brakes. after this service the squeal was still there. i took it back yet again and they did another brake inspection and said that when i do my brakes they will have to spin the rotors and this should fix this. the problem i have is that i shouldn't have to pay for this fix since it's been on going for almost a year.

Front disk brakes overheated and became warped. vehicle rarely carries full passenger or cargo loads. vehicle has never pulled a trailer. vehicle has under 18,000 miles on it with normal driving, seldom stop and go. failure may cause families on trips with trailers to have a catastrophic failure of the braking system. *nlm

I owned a nissan xterra(02)4wd-i drove it to the lassen nat'l volcanic park in red bluff,ca,i was about 300 ft from highway 36 going to the park. it was kind of chilly and the road have some snow on it. i was going slow about 13 to 15 miles, because i'm not familiar with the road, i was thinking i'll put on four wheel drive, but i have to stop the car and transfer it to 4wd-when i started sliding towards the mountainside,so stepped on the brakes(abs) but i kept on sliding, i did not steer it to the opposite direction,i just went where the was going which is to the right, the vehicle did not stop. it hit the the mountain side trees and snow then it rolled over. my son and me were shaken and i smelled the gas so i turn the engine, it still running. we got out of the car and i can't believe that we survived the crash- we were wearing our seat belts, we got some bruise an d bumps in our head, but a week later i still feel aches and pains-my complaints are that why did our abs did not work and the airbas did not deploy? lucky enough that we were not on the side of the of the deep canyon when it happened. i always maintained that car. *jb

The suv deviates to the right at any speed with in a few seconds. it is extremely notiaceable at speeds above 40 mph. constant pressure must be held on the steering wheel to the left. the suv also deviated to the left when the brakes are applied hard, such as for sudden halting. the suv would end on the shoulder if the brakes were applied hard. the suv has been at the nissan repair shop four times. there was some adjustments the last two times. now the suv still deviates to the right (like tring to run off the road) at cruising speeds. there has been a change with the behavior with sudden braking. the suv now ends on the left lane or incomming lane when the brakes are applied suddenly. the above problems were not noted during the first two weeks of driving, but since them it seems to be getting worse. the dealer has not been able to fix the problem. i do worry about the behavior of the truck on the road under rain, snow, or ice conditions. i find it difficult to predict what the truck will do under an emergency. are you interested in looking at this problem?. *ak
