Fuel gauge is not working, service engine soon is on all the time

I had 1/4 of a tank of gas and went to fill up. after filling up my gas tank, i turned on the car, at which point the needle did not register the full tank. after driving a couple miles, the check engine light came on. i went directly to the dealer and was told that it was a fuel sending unit/sensor and that it was no longer covered after 30k miles. after returning home and doing research, i went online to x.nissanhelp.com after performing a search, i came across many others who have experienced the same problem. apparently it has something to do with the fuel sending unit. a similar problem was found on the 2000-2004 xterra models and a recall was performed when the vehicle would stop after not getting any fuel, posing a great danger. it seems that somthing in the unit is faulty and will corrode over time. there is a general consensus that everyone who is having the problem is experiencing the same thing after having the vehicle for over 2 yrs and with around 39k-49k. if this problem existed in previous models, and it was recalled, the 2005-2007 xterras, frontiers, and pathfinders should get this fixed at no charge to the customer!! why wait for accidents and possible deaths, especially since the problem lies in an integral part of the vehicle. cost of repair ranges from $300-600.

Fuel gauge reads empty when not. also digital mileage is incorrect. check engine light is on due to this problem. fuel sensor??
03/27/201260800
The check engine light went on and per inspection by the nissan dealer it was due to the fuel lever sender (code p0463). estimated labor/material will cost me $500.00.

While driving, the engine cuts off without warning causing all systems to shut down, including brake assist and power steering causing a near collision twice, once while navigating a curve at low speed with a ditch on the right side and once while navigating a curve at higher speed and nearly coasting into oncoming traffic. the issue is due to a known defect in the radiator causing coolant to spill into the transmission. this is a major safety concern that appears in vehicles without warning in any circumstance at any speed. please initiate a recall asap for our safety!
01/09/201266000
The fuel level indicator is very unreliable. sometimes it reads full and other times it won't move from empty even though there's fuel in the tank. after doing some internet research on this problem i found that it's very common in the 2005 xterras! why hasn't there been a recall on the faulty sensor?

Radiator corrosion leaking fluid into transmission. replacing radiator and transmission. replaced vaporizer selonoid and the ipdm unit (voluntary recall) which caused stalling while driving. fuel sensor replaced. mandatory recall on the ecm unit. no notification on voluntary or mandatory recalls.

Fuel level sending unit fails with a p0463 stored in self-diagnosis. this is the same as the open recall for 06-08 in tsb ntb07-069b. however mine is an 05 and if you look on the web,,,,,,,this is a common problem with xterra s from 05-09 not just 06-08. nissan is not being helpfull, and running out of fuel in the middle of the road is not good, nor is the $500+ dollars they want to fix this!!

I have a 200d xterra that i bought new at the end of 2005. recently the gas gauge stopped working. i would fillit up than he gas light comes on along with service egine soon. next day gas gauge reads 3/4 full than never moves. nissan wants to charge $450 just so happenes my extended warranty ran out 10-15-11 and i have over 72,000 miles on it.

Started hearing a rumble strip sound while on smooth pavement. vehicle started shifting harder, with slight vibrations. before i could take it in, i was involved with a hit in run in a parking lot. nissan said the upper and lower radiator hoses were soaked in transmission fluid. manager said it had been leaking for some time. he said i needed a new radiator, and transmission cost of 6500. nissan updated their radiators because they new it was a defective part, but refuse to take care of damage they have caused. see link http://www.nissanassist.com/web/radiator/faqs.php?menu=22

Fuel level sensor failed 800 miles out of warranty; causes driver to have no idea of fuel level. creates dangerous possibility of running out of fuel on highways, in traffic, etc. without motor running, power steering and power brakes do not work, creating even higher risk of accident. very common issue on 2005 xterra; should have been a recall.

The fuel level sensor error code is on due to a part failure and this is a known fault that occurs frequently and has safety concerns due to possibility of running our of fuel.

After my service engine soon light was activated, i proceeded to take my nissan xterra to the nissan dealership in hawthorne, ca, to have it checked out. nissan charged me $129 for a diagnostic test, which found an error code of p0463. that error coded indicated that the fuel level sensor was malfunctioning. i declined to pay $570 to have it repaired. in doing some research on the internet, i found that several nissan vehicles, especially its trucks and suvs, have suffered from this product defect. i would greatly appreciate it if nissan rectified the situation by recalling vehicles or covering my charge for repairs.

I have a 2005 xterra with 38k miles, service engine soon light came on, took it to the dealership, hooked it up to the computer, diagnosis is a bad fuel sending unit $600.00 to replace. i'm just over the extended warranty but dealership cannot help. the sending unit and gasket are $200.00. $400.00 for labor seems a bit steep. at what point in time will nissan recall this issue?
10/10/200636800
Fuel sending unit died at 36800 miles; approximately 800 miles out of warranty. nissan later admitted fault (over 5 years later) and extended warranty to 72000 miles as it applies to that part, but my vehicle was well past that mileage by that point. vehicle now fails nj inspection because obd ii code is returned for faulty fuel level sensor.

Teenage daughter ran out of gas at night while gauge registered nearly a full tank! she was under the impression that her father must have recently filled the tank, which obviously was not the case. the gauge registers full when it's not and empty when it's not! received code p0463 fuel censor a too high after researching, i see that this is, and has been, an issue with xterras! and for older generations there was a recall. however for this model we were not notified of any issue thereby putting my daughter at risk.

Noticed check engine light on dash was on but detected no issues and unemployed so didn't run down to nissan to pay them $600 to turn out a light. needed tx inspection sticker about 4 days ago went to get one at nearby jiffy lube and they denied because of safety or emissions issues on a code p0463:fuel level sensor circuit high input. i got home and researched and found that is was quite common problem with xterras and pathfinders. so common in fact, that previous generation nissans were actually recalled for a similar issue. the sensor is in the gas tank and only checks the accuracy of the gas gauge. unfortunately, no recall has been placed on the part for the 2nd gen yet, and so nissan customers are being forced to have the dealer make the repair to the tune of about $600. what a racket. and without the repair i can't get my inspection sticker, when the worst that can happen is to run out of gas because the gas gauge may not show the correct level in the tank. my gauge is working fine. since when is even a possible gas gauge problem a safety and emissions hazard anyway? racket. the guy at jiffy lube told me it might be sending to much gas thru the engine. what? a blatant lie. so apparently, the system has it that this unemployed person, with barely enough to survive has to either risk a big costly ticket for no inspection sticker or line nissan's pockets with money i need to feed my family for a faulty part that they have even recalled the prior version of already when my vehicle runs good as it ever did and the gas gauge is working just fine. this is just wrong on so many levels and an injustice and apparently, you folks are the only ones that can bring justice to this situation by forcing them to recall that part they can't seem to get right before they rob more good americans of their limited resources in the racket they have going.

Nissan has had a great # of fuel sensor problems with their line of vehicles. this is a well documented fact . my fuel gauge failed a few weeks back and now reads empty all the time despite filling the tank up. the fuel sensor problem also loads a code which causes the check engine light to stay on- not a good thing if you need to get a state inspection done. nissan has ignored mine and many other requests to fix this problem. with a sensor that does not work or reads gas levels falsely due to faulty parts nissan is putting or has put in it's cars this is putting the driving public at great risk. accidents could be caused due to running out of fuel when you thought you had enough because of this faulty fuel sensor.

2005 nissan xterra having gas gauge / service engine light issue. po463 is the code which means the fuel sender/sensing unit is bad. this is clearly a faulty part issue on nissan and there should be a recall. there are too many people having this same issue with their 2005 - 2007 xterras, pathfinders, & frontiers. this is a hazard not knowing how much fuel is in your tank and it is a ridiculous to have to pay $600 to get this fixed when it is a faulty part issue.

I have a xterra 2005, i have two friends that have the same car, same year. they received from nissana latter that said, that the fuel gauge was faulty and that they need to ger it fixed, warranty was extended. mine is not working. called the dealer, they said i have no warranty, and it seems it is a problem with some nissan models 2005 and -06.
04/03/201150000
The fuel gauge is malfunctioning, i completely filled up the vehicle with gas started the engine and it still read empty. it took a couple of days to move up to showing full but now i have a check engine light. i researched this issue and many other nissan owners are experiencing or have experienced this problem with their vehicle around 50,000 miles. this is an issue nissan needs to take care of with so many people experiencing the same issue, it is obviously a defect in their manufacturing and is very pricey for the customer to fix!

I own a 2005 nissan xterra. my problem started with the fuel leveling system and my check engine light coming on. it was the fuel leveling sender. my fuel was not registering correctly at all. next came stalling of my suv. i would be driving and it would act as if it was running out of gas and cut off. that turn out to be the emc, in which i paid for but was reimburse because nissan issued a recall for the emc. this did not fix the fuel leveling sender problem. a few months later, my suv was having a hard crank. it just did not want to turn over. it would stall while driving. i would just cut off. i took that to a dealership and they said it was the cam sensors. so, i had the cam sensors replaced and i had the fuel level sender replaced. it was recommended that i have a mult-point inspection, so i had everything with that replace. i spent a $1000, only for my check engine light to come back on the next day. i took it back to the dealership for them to tell me now it is the catalyst converters and both needs to be replace. the price for both parts alone was $1300. i do not understand why so many xterra owners are having these types of problems and nissan are not responsible for fixing them. they will offer an extended warranty after the fact, but by the time the problem occur a 2005 does not qualify for the extended warranty. the catalyst converters affects the clean air for your vehicle. this is a safety issue.

The fuel sending unit is bad on my 2005 nissan xterra it is throwing a p0463 code and after some research i found it an apparent problem in most 2nd generation xterra's and frontiers. the problem is that the fuel sending unit tells the gauge how much gas is in the tank and since it is now working the gauge is not reading the proper amount of gas which can lead to a accident when the vehicle runs out of fuel.

Tl- the contact owns a 2005 nissan xterra. the contact noticed that the fuel gauge censor was reading inaccurately and she was unable to determine how much gas was actually in the vehicle similar to nhtsa campaign id number 10v075000 ( fuel system, gasoline:storage:auxillary tank). the vehicle was taken to the dealer who performed a diagnostic test and concluded that the fuel system sensor needed to be replaced. the contact informed the manufacturer who stated that since the vehilce was no longer under warranty they would not be able to provide any additional assistance. the current mileage was approximately 90,000. the failure mileage was unknown. bw

Fuel gauge went inop at approx 90,000 miles. nissan had extended the fuel gauge warranty to 72,000 which is rediculous considering most xterra's, pathfinders, and frontiers have this problem. this should be a recall, not a warranty extension. this is a safety issue. running out of gas on the highway is dangerous.

I have been experiencing issues with my fuel gauge on my 2005 nissan xterra. i can no longer place trust in the gauge, since i have run out of gas twice now, while the gauge still showed fuel available in the tank. the error codes on the computer module state it is the fuel sending unit. i have spoken with nissan and they refused to rectify this issue.

Check engine soon light illuminated. gas gauge inaccurate. gas light illuminated when plenty of gas is still in tank. dte feature no longer shows numbers only dashes. only 66,000 miles on vehicle. this problem started around 64,000 miles.

First problem - when i had 53,000 mi on it, it was still under warranty, it started cutting out and wouldn't accelerate at all, had to have it towed to the dealer to find out that the transmission was bad. they said that he radiator leaked, flooding my transmission with coolant and ruined my transmission. they refused to honor the warranty stating that the tranmission did not fail - the radiator did (which was not covered under warranty) therefore the transmission was not covered. i had to let them replace the radiator and flush the transmission 3 times - it cost me $1,400 out of pocket - now here i am 30,000 miles later and my reverse will not work at all, my transmission needs replaced. so i had paid 1,400 just to buy myself an year & a half and now i need a new transmission. 2nd problem - i have the fuel gauge/sensor problem, also. i filled up one day, got in my car and gauge read empty & check engine light was on. i had a rip-off mechanic charge me $170 to replace the sensor - nothing ever changed, gauge is still broke and light is still on. nissan is so wrong for not handling their problems, consumers deserve to be treated fairly. there should be a class action suit against them - just read these complaint boards. somehow i have both of the most common problems with these vehicles.

This '05 xterra had a thorough check out & diagnostic. then 500 miles later, at around 46000 miles, when the fuel indicator was at 1/2 tank- the needle suddenly plunged to below empty, a light came on and the service engine soon light came on. this was all very alarming, and we were stuck in bumper-bumper traffic in a bad part of phoenix when it happened. it wasn't hot out, just a big traffic jam in 5:00 rush, and we were nowhere near a gas station. it was terrible, and we were very scared to be stranded. after that we bought a huge gas can, and just drove around with 10 gallons of gas just in case. that is terrible, to have to drive wondering if when you'll actually run out of gas, vs. just being told you are out of gas.this started happening during the beginning of our cross-country trip to the coast and back. it was an issue the entire time, and very nerve wracking. nissan should fix this, since i've returned from our trip and found that 100's of people are having exact same problem! this is a faulty part, and it makes me wonder what else will go wrong. this is the first nissan our family has had, and i am afraid we might not be buying another one, and telling others to steer clear of nissan.

2005 nissan xterra se, fuel sending unit is erratic and doesn't read proper amount of fuel in tank. this could be a serious safety concern for anyone who actually uses their truck out in the desert thinking they have more fuel then is indicated. quite often the gauge will drop down to empty and i've gone to fill the truck up just in case and end up putting only a few gallons of fuel in the truck. this has happened multiple times, although its not a safety concern i do believe that the gauge showing the tank is at 3/4 or more then dropping down to 1/4 tank (the actual amount of fuel) is one. my biggest complaint is that nissan has issued a recall for models earlier then the 2005 and the models from 2006 forward. why is it that these models get the recall and not the 2005 models? the component that is failing in both the earlier and later models is the exact same part.

No specific events leading to failure. standard use of the 2005 nissan xterra and the failure has occured at approximately 70k miles on the car.. the failure is the fuel sensor guage which causes the gas guage to be inaccurate at all times. it will go from full to empty in 1 second while you are headed down the road. other times it will show half tank when the tank is empty. it happens every time we are in the car. consequenses could be fatal if we had not caught on to the issue. at any point we run the risk of running out of gas due to an error in the way the guage is reading.. we are forced to track miles on the odometer each time we fill up. nothing has been done by me at this point. nissan has acknowledged the issue by recalling 2006+ models and extending the warranty to 72k miles on the 2005 mondels. our car now has 90k miles on it so we do not meet either of their safety fixes.

The fuel sending unit on my 2005 nissan xterra failed at 50105 miles. this appears to be a common problem and it is under recall *but not for my year/vin). this is a manufacturer's defect and nissan should extend the recall to cover all 2005-2010 xterras. observed problem: 1. sevice engine light 2. code: p0463 3. fuel gauge no longer working (filled tank showing half filled).

I have a 2005 nissan xterra purchased new in 2006. it looks new still and i take very good care of it. i reported many times about the gas gauge not working correctly to the dealer and they said it was o.k. when checked. they since sold to someone else. it has gotten worse, a light stays on all the time to check maintenance because of it and i cannot pass state inspection until i pay several hundreds of dollars to repair it. i have talked to many people i see with them, many car sales people and dealers and sometimes people will come up to me while getting gas, compliment on the condition of mine, and ask if i have the problem and many of them has a newer vehicle and/or older vehicle. this is a problem that consumers should not have to pay for to get repaired and there should be a recall. i really do not have the money to pay this and make my monthly payments also. can you help me and the many others? you fill up with gas and the gauge goes to empty until such time it goes back to reading something and a couple of times has caused us to run out of gas.

In the past month i have experienced a series of anomalies with my fuel gauge. i initially noticed this when i completely refilled my gas tank only to notice that the gauge showed 7/8ths full. it seemed odd, but i didn't think it was an issue as the pump may have automatically shut off prematurely. turns out to not be the case. on my next trip to the gas station, upon refilling the gas tank, my gauge only read a half tank. upon my next trip in the vehicle, the gauge read properly. however, subsequent trips the gauge read sometimes more than it should and sometimes less than it should. for example, after going 78 miles the gauge still read full, and then after going 96 miles the gauge read half full. after refilling the gas tank this last time, the gauge read 3/4 of a tank. the next trip the gauge read full. subsequent trips the gauge reads sometimes more than it should and sometimes less than it should. the last couple of trips the gauge showed the same amount each time even though i have driven more than 60 miles. i took my vehicle to the nearest nissan dealer (where i've had service performed before) to check for a recall as i had heard there were vehicles with this same issue. apparently, nissan has issued the recall for some models and years but not for mine. they offered to diagnose the problem, for their usual shop fee naturally. you should be aware that this issue is not limited to the model years allowed in the recall. i have been reading on online forum with many 2005 xterras that are experiencing this same issue. i am less than pleased with the response from the dealership. i should not have to pay to diagnose a known problem; much less pay to have it fixed. i am issuing this complaint in hopes that you will do the right thing and realize the extent of this problem and include the 2005 model year in the existing recall.

I have a 2005 nissan xterra that has an issue with the fuel sending unit. the gas gauge takes a long time to register that the tank is full and now the service engine light is on. i have read many forums where people with both the xterra and pathfinder are having the same issue. they did a recall on the 2001-2003 xterra for the same problem. how is this not a recall. this is an expense that owners should not have to bear as it is a very common problem. consumers need help with this issue.

Tl-the contact owns a 2005 nissan xterra. while the contact was driving approximately between 60-65 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated with the fuel gauge displaying an inaccurate reading of a half of a tank. the fuel gauge reading fluctuated from empty to half full at various speeds. the failure became progressively worse. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a diagnostic testing. the failure was related to the fuel sending unit. the contact ordered the part and informed that he would repair the vehicle. the failure mileage was 75,000. the vin was unavailable. js

Filled up gas tank & check engine light came on. autozone did a diagnostic & found po463. my wife has noticed erratic fuel-gauge operation for some time, but only mentioned it since the check-engine light came on. she has also noticed the mileage displayed has not agreed with the displayed fuel-level, which she thought something had happened that changed her gas mileage...which had not. we drive this vehicle mainly on the freeway, as my wife is a college student in the rn program. in our location, she drives along with may semi-trucks going to/from canada. having our vehicle run out of gas on this freeway, with the amount of trucks per hr could be devastating, if attempting to get to a shoulder safely. we have owned this vehicle since new. this is unacceptable that we must rely on faulty factory instrumentation. other years have this same defect & have been recalled. are we waiting for the death toll to increase before acting on something that is such an obvious problem that can fail & cause the vehicle to stall at highway speeds? this is an obvious problem that requires recall & repair.

I had 1/4 of a tank of gas and went to fill up. after filling up my gas tank, i turned on the car, at which point the needle did not register the full tank. after driving a couple miles, the check engine light came on. i went directly to the dealer and was told that it was a fuel sending unit/sensor and that it was no longer covered after 30k miles. after returning home and doing research, i went online to x.nissanhelp.com after performing a search, i came across many others who have experienced the same problem. apparently it has something to do with the fuel sending unit. a similar problem was found on the 2000-2004 xterra models and a recall was performed when the vehicle would stop after not getting any fuel, posing a great danger. it seems that something in the unit is faulty and will corrode over time. there is a general consensus that everyone who is having the problem is experiencing the same thing after having the vehicle for over 2 yrs and with around 30k-49k. if this problem existed in previous models, and it was recalled, the 2005-2007 xterras, frontiers, and pathfinders should get this fixed at no charge to the customer!! why wait for accidents and possible deaths, especially since the problem lies in an integral part of the vehicle. cost of repair ranges from $300-600.

Nissan xterra 2005 -- faulty fuel sensor, fuel gauge does not report gas in tank
06/11/201044950
I have a 2005 nissan xterra 4x4. just recently i filled up my gas tank to full, but when i looked at my fuel gauge it just stayed at the half mark. it took a couple of hours before it climbed to full. my mileage was at 44,950 miles when this first occurred. it is still happening everytime i have to fill my gas tank. i keep filling at half because i'm afraid i will run out of gas on the freeway. i've noticed some other 2005 xterra owners had the same problem. they should have a recall on this because of their malfunctioning part. i called nissan about this but they told me my car was not covered because my car vin# was not under it
06/02/201071110
I have a 2005 nissan xterra and recently i had my service engine soon light come on. i found out that earlier nissan xterras and pathfinders had the same issue. it was a code p0463, fuel gauge detectionproblem. the earlier modles got this to be a recall, but the newer xterras have not. to get this fixed i can only get it done by the dealer and is around a $600 repair.
06/07/201070000
My 2005 nissan xterra se has approximately 73,000 miles on it, and the fsu (fuel sending unit) has stopped working. in other words, the gas gauge does not read accurately. for example, yesterday i filled the tank, and the gas gauge reads anywhere from a quarter-tank to a half-tank (changes sporadically). nissan has issued a recall for this issue for some 2006 and 2008 models, but from my online research, this issue seems to be occurring with other model years. the vehicle was significantly redesigned with the 2005 model, and subsequent years have seen only minor updates to this redesign. so it stands to reason that the recall should be expanded to include 2005 models, when everything was redesigned. clearly, not knowing how much gas you have in the tank is a safety issue, as one could end up running out of gas on the freeway, or out in a rural area at night, or some other unsafe scenario.

My 2005 nissan xterra fuel gauge has stopped working and now the check engine light is on and will not go off. after research i have found that this is a common problem with the nissan xterra for many consumers
01/05/201064000
I have a 2005 nissan xterra that i bought pre-owned. i haven't had any real problems with the vehicle, and have been keeping up with scheduled maintenance. i had my fuel sending unit in the vehicle malfunction, which has caused me to fail an emissions inspection and has caused several instances of running out of fuel as a result of a malfunctioning gas level indicator. after doing extensive research on the issue, it's apparently extremely common and nissan has failed to recall the problem. they recalled it for earlier model years, but although they're still using the same weak part, have yet to recall it for the year applicable to me (2005).
12/01/200970000
The fuel gauge on my 2005 nissan xterra se does not read accurately. when i fill the tank the display needle drops to below e and shows the fuel warning light illuminates. this began in novemeber 2009 with about 70k miles on the vehicle. nissan recently issued a recal for this very problem but limited it to model year 2006 and 2008 xterra's. nissan wants to charge me almost $600+ to fix the problem on my 2005. a simple google search of 'xterra fuel gauge' will show many more complaints from people with 2005 and 2007 xterra's. these should be included in the recall.
11/01/200939000
2005 nissan xterra experiences same problem with faulty fuel gauge sensor as numerous other nissan cars/trucks manufactured between 2006 and 2008. these other models are currently experiencing recall, but nissan has refused to issue a recall for the 2005 xterra with the same problem. a complaint has been lodged with north american nissan. when the fuel tanks runs to about half empty (judging from miles driven), the fuel gauge needle no longer reflects the true fuel level and remains stuck at around half, while the obd light comes on. reading the obd code sometimes shows p0463 for fuel sensor circuit malfunction. subsequently, when the engine runs to about 3/4 empty, the fuel sensor shows an empty tank. upon fully refueling, the fuel gauge sometimes returns to 2/3 level at the first engine restart, and after driving a certain distance, returns to full. the symptoms are consistent with descriptions of the fuel gauge sensor failure in nissan models named in the current recall.
07/10/200975000
Fuel gauge in vehicle works occasionally. this makes it hard to tell actual fuel level. this is the same problem that happens in the same vehicle of other years, and a recall was issued for them.
05/19/201062000
Noticed fuel gage sticking at current level when filling tank about last three fill ups. on my 2005 nissan xterra. filled it up tonight and drove home 1/2 mile pulled into the drive way and noticed check engine light on. used my obdii tester and got a code p0463 fuel level sensor circuit high input. i looked this up on the internet and found countless people with the same issue on nissan xterras and pathfinders. i also found the bad info on just what is involved in fixing this issue. i understand that this is not a life issue unless you run out of gas on the way to the emergency room. or the emergency responce team is in a nissan ect. its hard to believe that this is not a recall item.
03/15/201068540
My 2005 nissan xterra has experienced a failure of the fuel sending unit which causes the incorrect amount of fuel to be displayed on the gas gauge, causing the potential for running out of fuel on the highway and a significant danger to the driver and passengers. nissan is currently recalling model year 2006 and up vehicles but has not yet included the 2005s. it is imperative that nissan include the 2005 models as well.
03/25/201080000
Erratic function of dash fuel level gauge, gauge may go from one half tank to below empty and warning light comes on without warning.check engine dash warning light also comes on and stays on, if codes are checked, only code stored is fuel sending unit-low voltage. minutes later gauge may return to what appears to be normal function, but check engine light stays on. gauge cannot be trust to display fuel level accurately and may result in a traffic crash if vehicle looses power while in operation. this issue has been documented by numerous 2005 nissan xterra owners but nissan chooses to ignore the safety issue and refuses to recall the defective fuel sending unit.
11/17/200960000
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 nissan xterra. the contact stated that while driving 15 mph, the vehicle suddenly ran out of fuel. the contact called an authorized dealership and was advised that the fuel sensor was defective and since the vehicle was not a part of any recalls, she would be responsible for any repair expenses. the vin was unavailable at the time of the complaint. the failure mileage was approximately 60,000. the current mileage was approximately 63,000.
04/24/201081000
I pulled into a gas station to fill up my tank 2 weeks ago and after filling up the tank left the gas station and realized that the guage did not move. it was still stuck at 1/4 of a tank. i drove the car all week and the fuel gauge slowly went up to 1/2 of a tank however i kept track of the mileage and had to fill the tank again by the next week. the tank again was not working properly and my wife who also drives the vehicle does not keep track of the mileage as closely as i do and i am worried that she will have a problem with running out of fuel on a major highway during rush hour. after the 2nd week of the fuel gauge not working properly today i started the vehicle and the service engine soon light came on and stayed on for the entire 35 miles that i traveled to work. i did some research on the internet and found that many people have complaints for this same issue and found that it may be the fuel sending unit. i see that the 2006 xterra's have been recalled however mine is a 2005 and wonder why it is also not being recalled? i fear for the safety of my wife driving this vehicle.

Summary: 2005 nissan xterra fuel gauge reading empty when full and slowly rising back to the correct display level then dropping to mid-level displaying incorrectly. service engine light comes on and stays on sometimes turning off and on at odd times. this event happens everyday and i have now relied on the tripometer to tell my fuel level. prior events leading to malfunction: i was driving on a 9 hour long trip during winter. i was about 4 hours into the trip and my fuel gauge oddly dropped to empty so i filled up but no change occurred. on the way up it started to work again so i figured it was a fluke and trusted the gauge. my car stalled about 8 hours in and i had to wait in the cold for 2 hours for aaa. repairs made: no repairs were made but i have looked for quotes on the repair and i keep getting different answers to the problem. one said the fuel gauge sensor needs to be reset (200 dollar fee) and another said the fuel pumps need to be replaced (700 dollar fee). similarities to common recall: the issue i have is so common to the nhtsa campaign id number: 10v075000 recall. this recall is on the 2006 and 2008 nissan xterra, frontier, and pathfinder. it involves: the molded fuel tank shells can deform, causing the fuel sender float arm to contact an embossment molded into the tank shell causing the instrument panel fuel gauge to show that the vehicle has approximately one quarter tank when the fuel tank is empty. i have no doubt that we 2005 xterra owners are having the same issue, and online that is the consensus. thank you very much for your time and work resolving this issue. *tr

I have an 05 nissan xterra. the gas gauge shows the gas tank empty even when it contains fuel. the check engine light will come on when the tank reaches 1/4 capacity (based on odometer estimate) and will stay on for hundreds of miles (after refuel). code returned: p0463. why are 06 - 08 xterras covered? even if the 05's issue is completely independent of the 06 and up (which i don't believe), it would seem that there have been enough complaints to warrant further investigation. thank you. *tr

I have 2005 nissan xterra. it has a fuel gauge problem. it is always giving me the wrong reading of how much fuel i have in my tank even after i completely fill up. this started to happen suddenly with nothing that caused it. this is a hazard because i am having to constantly estimate how much fuel i have left and constantly filling up my tank to make sure that i have enough fuel.

04/01/201092000
We have a 2005 nissan xterra, one day we filled it at a gas station and noticed right after leaving the station that the gauge still said a quarter of a tank, so we pulled into another gas station a few miles down to see if it would take more gas and it only took $0.60 worth, so when we started the engine again, the service engine soon light was on. as we were driving down the road the gauge slowly started rising to the full mark. we had to fill it again before we got back from our trip and it did the same thing, didn't register our full tank and then slowly went up to the full mark, and the service engine soon light has stayed on the whole time. we cant tell if we still have fuel or not.

Inaccurate fuel gauge leading to inaccurate fuel readings; the gauge may show gas left when tank is actually empty or vice versa; all digital dash readings and components short out or completely stop working including mileage readings; have to continually fill up with gas to ensure i have enough to run the vehicle; i have run out of gas while traveling at 80 miles per hour on the highway several times, this is a very serious safety hazard; i have two small children traveling with me and do not need to run out of gas on the side of the highway. this vehicle has never been in an accident but has had this problem for over a year.
03/15/201073000
My 2005 nissan xterra has a fuel gauge problem which causes the gauge to not display the correct amount of fuel in the tank. it can show empty after a fill up. it is impossible to know how much fuel is in the tank. this could cause me to run out of gas wile operating the vehicle which could lead to a crash.

I own a 2005 nissan xterra. my check engine light came on about 2 months ago. i used a code reader to read the problem and it stated it was the fuel level sensor failing. i cleared the code from the computer and filled my gas tank and the levels seemed half way accurate. the check engine light came on once more just recently. after much research, i have found it to be a faulty fuel sensor gauge that is an all in one fuel pump, filter, and sensor unit. feel free to research this yourself. nissan has had fuel pump and filter issues with 2005+ truck/ suv models. i believe they recalled them in the eastern us, but not here in the west. it appears to me that it is a defective part on the car. they claim it is not covered under warranty and is a wear and tear item. this is ridiculous! it is a part that should last over 125k miles... but not. they need to fix the problem they created. it will cost me $600 dollars to fix it! in this economy its impossible for me! basically you can run out of fuel anywhere at any time if the sensor is not functioning correctly. this can cause an accident or cause you to get stranded in a bad part of town. both of which are life threatening. *tr

Fuel sending unit problem. fuel gauge reads empty no matter what fuel level actualy is. this turns on service engine soon light and low fuel level light. code read relates to low fuel. problem is intermittant at this time. from reading posts online this problem seems to be very common among many nissan vehicles though the dealer will not repair if vehicle is past 36,000 mile warranty.

The fuel sending unit on my 2005 x-terra has stopped working properly. it shows that i'm empty right after i fill it up and decides to work after about 50 miles after fill up, then with about a quarter tank of gas left, it says that it's empty, plus the distance to empty calculator stopped working and constantly blinks - -. although this has been a heavily recorded issue with many nissan vehicles for over 10 years they still refuse to help me out with resolving this issue and claims that it will cost me over $600 to fix it.

2005 nissan xterra fuel level gauge gives inaccurate readings. this is the same part number that was determined to be faulty in the 2006-2010 xterra. nissan so far has acknowledged there is a problem since they redesigned the unit but is only recalling 2006+

I have a 2005 nissan xterra that the fuel sensor went out. when you fill up the tank it will drop down and say its empty. so you have to write down the mileage so you know how much is in it. what i have read is this is a big problem that goes back to the early 2000's.
10/15/200870000
Fuel gauge reads empty when gas is present. i do not know how much fuel is left. there is a recall on 2006 an newer vehicles of the same type. many people i talk to with the same make and year vehicle as myself have the same problem. this is a definite safety issue for me considering the extensive mileage i drive.

I own a 2005 nissan xterra. the fuel level sending unit supplied by nissan has gone bad 2 times. i have replaced it once with a nissan supplied part. both times it said there was a quarter tank of fuel left but the tank was actually empty. the first time my wife ran out of gas in traffic. this a very common failure in the 2005-2010 model year nissan xterra and various other nissan models. i have not replaced the current bad unit. i filed a complaint with nissan to get the part replaced again, they told me no.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 nissan xterra. the contact stated that the fuel sensor in the fuel tank failed which also affects the fuel gauge. the fuel gauge may indicate that the fuel tank was full; however, it could actually be empty. the vehicle was taken to the dealer after a diagnostic test and they informed her that the fuel sensor needed to be replaced. the repair cost was $700 and there were no recalls or related warranties for her model year vehicle. the nissan manufacturer was called and informed her that there was nothing they could. the failure mileage was 56,000.

I have a 2005 nissan xterra. the check engine light came on and the fuel reader is not functioning so i have no idea how much fuel i have. i hooked up a diagnostic to it and discovered a code that indicates a faulty fuel sensor. i contacted nissan consumer affairs and explained the problem. they made me go into nissan and have them diagnose it. they charged me $120 dollars and told me that the fuel sensor was faulty and it was going to cost $600 to replace. nissan just recalled all xterras from 2006 to 2008 because of faulty fuel sensors. i found a website that has one hundred other owners of a 2005 xterra with the same problem. nissan told me they could help me out by knocking off $250 from the $600. this is a safety issue that many are experiencing and i want to see if i can get some help. *tr

2005 nissan xterra fuel sensor issue. the fuel sensor will trigger the check engine light when refueling. the sensor will read empty on a full tank and then slowly creep up to full over time. this is the same description of an issue as the recently recalled 06 nissan xterra's. this needs to be addressed by nissan. *tr

The fuel gauge is faulty. after filling up tank it reads zero for some time until slowly progressing to correct level. also, will sometimes just drop to zero/empty. my service engine light comes on after filling up tank then goes out once i reach about half to quarter tank (if the fuel gauge is reading correctly). sometimes the engine light stays on for weeks - the code reading is for a faulty fuel level sensor. i owned the 2000 xterra and the fuel level sensor was recalled for that vehicle. *tr

My 2005 xterra gas gage goes to empty and will not show true amount in tank. this has been happening for about 1 month. also the check engine stays on and i know it is from the fill valve from the gas tank. i had one replaced already about 1 year ago and the problem is back. this is a re occurring problem that has been continuing for the last 2 months. also the latch for the rear hatch some times will lock and not open i also replaced this about 1 year ago and the problem continues. *tr

Check engine light on constantly showing error code p0463. this refers to a fuel level sensor on my 2005 nissan xterra. they light will come back on a few days after being reset. not knowing the correct fuel level can cause the vehicle to suddenly run out of fuel, causing a dangerous situation. the repair costs around $600.00. the 1st generation xterras (2000-2004) had a similar problem that turned into a recall campaign by nissan. by reading the bulletin boards, this problem is also widespread on the 2nd generation xterras (2005-2010), but nissan has not issued a recall yet. *tr

 1) nothing in particular leading up to my failure, normal driving until i reached 1/4 tank of gas. from some online research, i believe it is a defective part that nissan is ignoring. the corresponding nissan error code is 0463. 2) when / if i drive my vehicle down to 1/4 tank of gas, the service engine light goes on. it is the fuel level sensor. if i fill my tank and drive a while it will go off. if i fuel up before i reach 1/4 tank the light will not go on. this will happen every time. 3) through advice from a nissan master tech, i now fill up before i reach 1/4 tank. he says that i am not hurting my vehicle in any way. to fix the merely annoying issue, i would have to pay around $600. *tr

The fuel gauge on my '05 xterra read e after fill up. after ecm reset event recurred several times. on two occasions engine shut down while leaving my driveway. mistakenly, i attributed this to bad fuel and/or cold engine. that is until yesterday, during rush hour at 60mph the engine cut off in heavy traffic. narrowly escaping a major accident, this would have involved multiple cars. i mercifully coasted to the shoulder of the interstate. i turned off the ignition waited a few minutes and tried to restart. i repeated this procedure until on the fourth attempt it restarted and i made it to work. the engine shut off as i was leaving work that day also. after a diagnostic and simple query on the internet, i found my p0463 code to be related the fuel sending unit, a well known and all too common issue. in fact a relevant service bulletin was issued by nissan. moreover, a recall was issued for earlier model xterras. frequency of this issue and my safety concerns have progressively worsening. i refuse to transport my children in the vehicle. (imagine an engine shut down while turning left with oncoming traffic.) though nissan customer care and my dealer indicate no recall has been issued, i am working with both the resolve. to me $26,000 is a substantial purchase, and commensurate product quality and customer support is expected. absent nissan standing behind its product, the estimated dealer repair cost is $500+. the potential cost of not repairing the fuel sending unit on any affected nissan vehicle is immeasurable. *tr

Nissan's x-terra off-road edition model is experiencing fuel gauge failures at or after 45,000 miles. i have owned two identical vehicles, sold one, have one remaining that my mother drives. both suv's have experienced identical fuel gauge failures. an internet search reveals that i am far from being alone in experiencing this issues as the pathfinder model is also seeing the same failures indicating there's a deeper problem here. the failures are starting to occur as early as 45,000 miles which is slightly outside the standard 36,000 mile warranty period. this in turn ends up putting the cost for repairing this defect back on the customer to the tune of $500 to $700. much of this cost is due to the labor charge incurred in pulling off the fuel tank to access the sending unit. it is unreasonable to expect a fuel sender gauge failure at 45,000 miles as there are millions of vehicles on the road that do not experience this problem at all during their operational lifetimes. it is my sincere hope that the nhtsa will investigate and force nissan to replace this defective fuel sending gauge. *tr

I filled my gas tank when it was at 1/2 full for a trip out of town. i got about 1 mile from the gas station and my ses light came on and i noticed my fuel gauge still read 1/2. i pulled over because i thought i would check my gas cap to see if that was what made the light come on. it took approximately 30 minutes for the gas gauge to finally reach full with my light still on. the light remained on until my gas went back down to 1/2 tank. i filled my tank again tonight (12-1-09) because it was at 1/4 of a tank left. again, my gauge still read the same as before i filled the tank and i am assuming the light will come back on when i drive it again. i have researched this problem on the internet and it is a recurring problem that is left for the vehicle owner to pay for even though it is clearly a manufacture problem. many owners, including myself, will not buy another nissan vehicle. *tr

I have a 2005 nissan xterra. approx. 2 weeks ago i went to fill up the tank and the gas gauge did not move, and the service engine soon light came on. i had not had any indication of a problem up until that day. i went to the dealer who said is was some fuel sensor that needed to be replaced that would be 400.00 to fix (which i priced i a different repair shop and it was ~ 30 dollars cheaper). i declined to get it fixed right away because i did not have the money. a few days later, the service engine soon light went off and the gauge was working again, but then the light came back on again after i filled my car up again. i hope that this part will get recalled since so many people have had issues with this part in their vehicle. my car has a little under 70,000 miles on it. *tr

My 2005 nissan xterra off road addition was running fine, had no major issues. the fuel gauge indicator suddenly started jumping up and down between full and empty, the service engine soon light also came on. i brought the truck to a local auto parts store and they read a code po463 with their ecu reader. with some research i found this to be a fuel sending unit/fuel level issue. the nissan dealership stated this is a common problem, some sort of corrosion issue and it would be around $500-700 to fix the issue. i ended up doing repairs (replaced the fuel sending unit) myself to save money, but i think if this is a common problem perhaps a recall is in order? *tr

 1. (the events leading up to the failure)-i went to the gas station to fill up because my 2005 nissan xterra was less than 1/4 tank full. i filled it up all the way and drove off. i looked at the gas gauge and it still read under 1/4 tank. soon after the ses (service engine soon) light came on. 2. (the failure, how often it occurs, its consequences)- i looked up online what the possible issue could be. in searching over several forums, and over 100 complaints, i found the issue to be error code: p0463 (fuel level sensor). it occurs everyday. the consequences, i never know how much fuel is in my tank. as a matter of fact. i ran out of gas suddenly in the middle of nowhere. i was lucky enough someone helped me get fuel. this is a major issue. 3. (what was done to correct the failure) i have done nothing so far, because it is such a common issue, that it should be recalled. it is roughly a $600 repair issue that should be recalled by nissan. i only have 51,513 miles on my 2005 nissan xterra. *tr

Fuel sending unit malfunction after 40,000 miles, so fuel gauge does not register the correct amount of fuel in the fuel tank. regular maintenance performed since vehicle was acquired new in 2005. gauge will take approximately 30 minutes to register full after fill-up and then almost immediately drop back to 3/4 or slightly below and remain there. i have found numerous threads on this issue in various online forums from owners of 2005 and later xterra suvs and frontier pick up trucks. all state that nissan will not replace the defective part over 36,000 miles and the repair is listed at $600 or more after the original warranty expires. nissan has issued a tsb and is aware that the part is defective, but refuses to conduct a recall, even though this seems to be a very common problem. i live in the western united states and, by necessity, have to travel fairly long distances to get to civilization. due to this fact, i think it is pretty important and consider it a safety issue that i know how much gas i have in the tank, especially since winter is just a few weeks away and the weather here can be quite severe during that time. i also have a second, 2006 model xterra that is approaching 40,000 miles, which i'm sure will have the same problem with at some point in the next few months. *tr

My fuel sensor and evap valve have both failed on my '05 nissan xterra. i use it off-road, which is supposedly why the evap valve failed. so many people are having these problems that they are clearly a manufacturing defect. nissan should be ashamed not to stand by the quality of their product; they should be replacing it for free. *tr

I bought a brand new 2005 nissan xterra in january of 2006. at approximately 48,000 miles the fuel sending unit went bad. after filling up with gas, the gauge did not move from almost empty and the engine service light came on. after driving around 60 miles, the gauge began to move, but eventually stalled on a half tank of gas. after a few weeks the gas gauge started working again, but now about 14 months later, the same thing is happening constantly. i have no idea how much gas i have in the tank. i was told it would cost over $500 to repair. after researching, i found that this is a common problem with nissan vehicles. there needs to be a recall before an accident happens. *tr

I drive a 2005 nissan xterra and have 27,100 miles on it. when the car hit 26,000 miles, the service engine soon light came on. i had the car looked at by my mechanic and he said that there was a defect in the fuel sensor line which doesn't register the amount of gas being used. the gas gauge is extremely erratic and i don't know how much gas i have. i've been stuck a couple times because the car ran out of gas and the fuel gauge said that i had half a tank. this is a dangerous issue because there are usually passengers in the vehicle (small children) and to have to pull a car over on a highway because it ran out of gas is quite a problem, especially if i have to lug children out of the car and walk the highway looking for a gas station. i've read online where numerous people have complained about the exact same issue. why would something like this not be recalled? how may people have to die or become seriously injured before something is recalled? please, please look at this issue and hopefully resolve before someone's life is either ended because of death or injury. thank you. *tr

2005 nissan xterra fuel gauge slowly shows the amount of fuel in the car (approximately an hour after filling up the tank). from many forums the problems is obvious and there is a need for a recall by nissan. the fuel sending unit in the vehicle is defective on all nissan xterra's platform (including frontier & pathfinder) after 40k miles on the car. the cost of such repair by dealers amounts to $600 dollars for parts and labor. *tr

Fuel sensor has gone out at 57,000 miles. this causes the gas gauge not to work or work very slowly. in taking it to dealer, fix is 475.00. i have researched this and it seems all nissan suv experience this. i asked dealer about this and he said there was a bulletin, but it recommended buying a better part. *tr

My nissan xterra is having a fuel gauge/sensor problem which results in the driver having no idea how much fuel is in the gas tank. this is a very common problem on nissan xterras, pathfinders and frontiers. all one needs to do is an internet search to see how common this problem is. nissan has not issued a recall and will not cooperate with me in getting this fixed. the cost of the repair is between $300-500 (most of which is labor) and a vehicle can not pass inspection if they have this problem. i have already run out of gas in a not so nice area while going 55 mph and controlling the vehicle/getting it to the side of the road was difficult when it was out of gas. i was fearful of not only the difficulty in handling/dealing with the vehicle in a safe manner so as to not cause an accident but imagine my surprise that was out of gas and i could not tell because of the faulty sensor not indicating actually how much gas was in the car. i was fearful for my safety because this happened on a highway in a not so nice area in the metro nyc area. all one needs to do is an internet search on nissan fuel gauge or sensor problems and will see many complaints about this issue. nissan has recalled earlier models for this same issue but has not recalled any vehicles from 2005 on for this defective problem. a nissan mechanic at a local dealership told me that this was a common problem on xterras, pathfinders and frontiers and wished me good luck in getting nissan to fix it under a recall since he thought it was highly unlikely that nissan would do anything about it. i have contacted nissan consumer affairs about this issue and they were not helpful at all. they basically told me that nissan will not repair this issue since there is no recall on it even though this is a very common problem on their vehicles. *tr

2005 nissan xterra fuel level sensor malfunction. with mis-reading on the fuel level, the vehicle may run out of fuel when it appears to have plenty of fuel in the tank, causing a safety hazard. this is a very common problem on '05+ nissan xterra and pathfinder suv's. these are usually correlated with a po463 emission failure code. *tr

2005 nissan xterra. at 40000 miles it is common for this model to have the fuel level sensor fail. this can cause disabled vehicles due to vehicles running out of gas. this is a common problem with this model vehicle and the manufacturer is aware of the problem but refuses to assist or even warn owners of the potential problems. nissan recalled 2001-2003 models for the same issue, but continue to use the same faulty part. nissan or a mechanic must removed the gas tank to get to the fuel pump and the fuel level sensor. it even requires a special tool to remove this unit. total cost of repair between $550 & $600 for a $90.00 part. *tr

My 2005 xterra check engine light just went on and after testing my ecu i received error code p0463, which is a faulty fuel level sensor. this condition can cause potentially dangerous conditions for people traveling at high speed who are under the impression they still have gas in their tank when in fact they do not. *tr

2005 nissan x-terra fuel gauge stops working, making you uncertain of fuel level in vehicle. also causes check engine light to come on and stay. according to internet research, this is a very common problem, costing consumers around $600 to repair, as nissan claims it is out of warranty part.*tr

My 2005 xterra check engine light just went on and after testing my ecu i received error code p0463, which is a faulty fuel level sensor. this condition can cause potentially dangerous conditions for people traveling at high speed who are under the impression they still have gas in their tank when in fact they do not. a similar problem was found on the 2000-2004 xterra models and a recall was performed when the vehicle would stop after not getting any fuel, posing a great danger. there is a general consensus that everyone who is having the problem is experiencing the same thing after having the vehicle for over 2 yrs and with around 39k-49k. if this problem existed in previous models, and it was recalled, the 2005-2007 xterras, frontiers, and pathfinders should get this fixed at no charge to the customer!! why wait for accidents and possible deaths, especially since the problem lies in an integral part of the vehicle. thank you for your consideration. *tr

Hi i have a 2005 nissan xterra. these vehicles are having major problems with the fuel sending unit, located in the gas tank on the fuel pump. the symptoms are that one day out of the blue, with low miles on the vehicle, the gas gauge stops working or becomes inaccurate. on the odb ii, it shows as po463. nissan will not cover and this is unsafe, as you have to guess by mileage how much fuel is left. mine went out and i fixed it myself as i was concerned with safety of running out of fuel at a bad time. *tr

2005 nissan xterra. have approx 43k miles on it and the service engine soon light has come on. i took it in to a nissan dealer in oceanside, ca and was told that i need a new fuel sensor. the current fuel sensor in my car must be fine since i have had zero problems with my fuel readings. there has been zero change in driveability, but nissan is trying to stick me for $515 for a new sensor, i declined the service. i've seen a number of people that have this same problem and it sounds like it's not isolated to just myself. a recall must be made by nissan to alleviate this problem! *tr

I own a 2005 nissan xterra and recently my fuel gauge has been reading 1/2 tank full, then out of no where, it drops to empty. upon refilling the tank (15gal worth) the gauge remains on empty w/ the check engine light on. after some driving the gauge eventually returns to the proper location, and the process continues every time. i've read a few discussion boards on the subject and it seems to be very common on nissan suv's and alot of complaints concerning the fuel pump/sending unit. *tr

Learned a few things on this issue. i am out of warranty as well and would have to pay out of pocket for 2005 xterra w/42,000 miles to get it fixed (dealership quotes appx $600)......kind of a rear end burner. seems like most folks are having this problem towards 3/4 to a full tank. could this part of the metal strip be corroding when it's not submerged in the fuel ?? if i have to guess it's a metal coating or type of metal used when manufactured problem. you don't have to go too far to realize this is a problem! just google 2005 nissan xterra fuel gauge issues...or ses light on issue you'll see pages upon pages of consumer's getting screwed by what nissan would rather ignore!! *tr

Fuel gauge problem and service engine soon light i just got back from the dealer w/ my 2005xterra se. i have a similar problem. my ses light comes on and my dte gauge reads ---- when the fuel gauge gets down to 1/4 of a tank. the dealer told me it registered error code po463 and that i need a new fuel sending unit. since my xterra has 56000 miles on it is not covered by warranty. they tell me approx $600.00 to fix. in my case the ses light resets after approx 300 miles. as long as i keep the gas more than 1/4 of a tank the ses light won't come on. *tr

I filled the tank in our 05 xterra only to find that the gas gauge was not acknowledging the fill up. a few minutes later the gauge dropped to empty, and then the fuel light and check engine light came on. now, the fuel gauge does not work at all and the repair estimates are $675+. nissan will not acknowledge this as a problem, yet much internet research tells me that this occurs on most xterras. this xterra is the primary vehicle for my wife and two children under the age of 3, and twice now they have run out of gas because of this. *tr

Same fuel gauge problems other owners are complaining about and the lack of support from nissan. ours would read empty and low fuel light comes on below 1/2 tank of gas. took it to a nissan dealer and $741.00 later the fuel sender/fuel pump was replaced. this is my wife's vehicle and i would hate the thought of her being stranded thinking she had plenty of fuel and it runs out of gas. i guess nissan does not think of this. there should definitely be a recall on these fuel senders and issue some kind of credit or check for the owners who have already had the vehicle repaired at their expense. *tr

2005 nissan xterra fuel system. i have complained to the nissan dealership about squeaking from the moment i purchased this vehicle in 2005 (new) - but they claimed they could not hear it (??). now my ses light comes on indicating a fuel system (fuel sensor gauge) problem. as i know that i am one of very many xterra and pathfinder owners with the same problem, it would appear that this item is defective. i also owned the 2000 xterra - there was a recall on the fuel system and it was replaced. why is there not a recall now - since nissan is obviously doing nothing to remedy this situation. *tr

I filled up my gas tank and when i turned my car on, the gas gauge needle did not move to reflect how much gas was in my tank. the gas station attendant put another dollar worth of gas into my car. upon turning my car back on, the gas gauge needle still did not move and my check engine soon light came on. the gas cap was secure. i called the dealer and took my car into their service department. the mechanic told me they could find nothing wrong with my car and reset the light. the same problem occurred the next time i filled my gas tank. furthermore, about a month after the check engine soon light came back on the gas gauge will now drop below empty and my gas light will go on when i have about a half of a tank or a quarter of a tank of gas left. the check engine soon light remains on. *tr

I have a 2005 nissan xterra. earlier this week i fueled up the vehicle and continued home. i realized that my fuel gauge was reading only 3/4 of a tank. so, i went back up to the gas station and tried to finish filling the tank (on .57 cents). every day since then, once i start the car the fuel gauge reads bad. this past monday the service engine soon light had come on. i then went out and purchased an obd ii scanner to read the error code. it was p0463 (fuel level sensor a circuit high input). did some research on the subject and found that it means that i have a faulty fuel sending unit. it seems to be a very common problem for 2005-2007 nissan xterra. this is a safety issues. if my wife is driving my daughter back to nyc and the car runs out of fuel and they are stranded in the middle of the new jersey turnpike with people driving past them in excess of 70-80 mph.... that is far from safe. *tr

Today, i put a full tank of gas in my car but my gas gauge showed that it was 1/4 full. i had an argument with the gas station clerk that they ripped me off. since it was late at night i wasn't able to speak to the managers of that station. i decided to drive to another gas station to see if i could fill it up, but all of sudden, the service engine soon light turns on and now the gauge was completely down with the light on. the only way for me to know that my tank is full is to try to fill it up again. but, because it was full, the tank was not allowing anymore gas. i decided to do a brief research to find that many others has the same problem with my car. it's a 2005 nissan xterra with 50,000 miles. most of the people online indicated that they also have the similar problem at the similar mileage costing them over 500 dollars in repair. now that the gauge is disabled, i wouldn't know when my tank will be emptied. i could be stuck in the middle of the freeway or somewhere in the wilderness without any gas. people online were saying its part of the sensor in the car which was made faulty for many of the nissan trucks and suv's. i strongly believe that this is a bad move by nissan and i will definitely want them to have a recall. it is unfair for consumers to be paying extra 400-600 dollars to replace a faulty item. *tr

Following is a complaint already filed and received by your office: i had 1/4 of a tank of gas and went to fill up. after filling up my gas tank, i turned on the car, at which point the needle did not register the full tank. after driving a couple miles, the check engine light came on. i went directly to the dealer and was told that it was a fuel sending unit/sensor and that it was no longer covered after 30k miles. after returning home and doing research, i went online to x.nissanhelp.com after performing a search; i came across many others who have experienced the same problem. apparently it has something to do with the fuel sending unit. a similar problem was found on the 2000-2004 xterra models and a recall was performed when the vehicle would stop after not getting any fuel, posing a great danger. it seems that something in the unit is faulty and will corrode over time. there is a general consensus that everyone who is having the problem is experiencing the same thing after having the vehicle for over 2 yrs and with around 39k-49k. if this problem existed in previous models, and it was recalled, the 2005-2007 xterra, frontiers, and pathfinders should get this fixed at no charge to the customer!! why wait for accidents and possible deaths, especially since the problem lies in an integral part of the vehicle. cost of repair ranges from $300-600. i had a very similar experience while traveling across the country when my odometer hit 39950+/- miles. this is evidentially a very common occurrence with the xterras, pathfinders and titans all made by nissan. while this is not a safety issue at face value, a misreading of the fuel gauge could very likely put a lone occupant in a very bad situation leading to any number of threatening situations. the fact that nissan is aware of the problem, yet refuses to address it regardless of the potential safety issues would seem to indicate, at the very least , a disregard for their customer's safety. *tr

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE - STORAGE - AUXILLARY TANK
11/20/2009570001
*tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 nissan xterra. while driving at 35 mph, the contact stated that the fuel sensor failed and the check engine light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the dealer stated that the failure was caused by the contact putting a locking gas cap on the vehicle; they would offer no further assistance. the contact called the manufacturer and was informed that the vehicle was not included in any recalls. the current mileage was 131,737. the failure mileage was approximately 93,000.

On or about may 14th 2011 i observe fluid leaking from my nissan 2005 xterra. i sought professional advice. it was mandatory that i replace the radiator, thermostat and flush the engine and transmission. it became very apparent that this was a manufacture defect. i then contact five towns nissan, who indicated that my vehicle was out of warranty (80,000). i did receive an undated

Just purchased 2 wks ago a 2005 nissan xterra. at first the fuel gauge was slow to show the fuel level but it showed if it was half full or close to empty. now just two days ago our daughter called us saying she just filled the vehicle with gas and the fuel gauge is showing it is completely empty - fuel light is on. i have been all over the internet looking at how to fix the problem and how common of a problem it is-wow, its a seriously common problem. this is a serious hazard for my young teenage daughter! if she runs out of gas it could cause an accident. there appearts to be no recall on this and from what i am seeing, it costs a lot of money to fix this problem-a problem that nissan should fix!

My 2005 nissan xterra has problems with the fuel sending unit. the gas gauge will read at a quarter of a tank, when in fact there is no gas at all. it seems this occurs very often is other models older and newer, however the warranty is only covered up to 36000 miles. it seems to be that most people come across this issue well after the warranty expires. i would like to express my shame with nissan for not backing their products and putting dealerships under the pressure to charge customers to replace these faulty items, when it is their responsibility to provide for the safety of their consumers with reliable parts. i understand that there is a certain wear and tear that all cars incur, but faulty fuel sending units? i can be sure that this is not a common wear and tear item because if it was, other makes and models would need to replace it more often or within the 36000 mile criteria.

Please help! my fuel sensor is failing. my service engine light is always on now and the repair for this is expensive. i received an extended warranty in the mail for 72,000 miles for this exact problem. i called nissan directly because my mileage was past this and this is an extremely common failure in xterras and they said they could do nothing for me. there is a nissan service bulletin ntb07-069b in existence, but not a recall. since they wouldn't help me, my light was on long before i hit 72,000 miles, and this is such a common problem in these vehicles, i feel strongly that nissan should issue a recall. i have high mileage on my car because my family lives 6 hours away and i drive to see them frequently. is there any thing you can do to help me? please?

My nissan xterra has a problem with the fuel gauge sensor. the sensor reading comes and goes and i have even ran out of gas once. there was a recall out on this for immediate repairs and one that gave an extended mileage warranty to 72,000 miles. i called nissan in may 2010, and was told that they were still dealing with getting the correct part and to call back in a few months. i was around 66,000 miles at that time. i had a friend at work who had the same problem and he had it into the dealer 4 times and it wasn't until around september when it got fixed with the right part. so knowing that, that is when i called in since i knew they had the correct part. i took it in for the fuel gauge and front crash sensor recalls, and they only fixed the one. nissan told me that the fuel gauge recall for my vehicle was only good til 72,000 miles, and i was over that. i don't believe this is fair since i was trying to get it fixed and i was under that mileage in may, but while waiting on nissan to get it right, from may to september, i obviously put on more miles and it put me over. now they say they wont cover it. this is not my fault, and other xterras with this issue are getting this covered, i feel that i am entitled to the same. thanks

2005 nissan xterra 4 wd--service engine soon light comes on--checking the diagnostics code indicate fuel sensor is the issue; a few days later, fuel gauge becomes erratic and eventually quits working; a call to the nissan consumer affairs indicate the car is part of a recall for this problem--except the recall is void after 72,000. my mileage exceeds the 72,000 limit.

My nissan xterra has a fault fuel gauge sending unit, the senor went out but i am past the 72k extended warranty. i received a letter in the mail today indicating that if this particular item is being extended to customers of the nissan xterra but up to 72k miles, i currently have 75k on my call. once i called nissan and asked if this could be extended as a courtesy because i just received the letter today i was not given a clear answer but instead told to go to a dealer have them run the dx and then have the dealer contact nissan? im confused why can't they just extend it for me since i have already had the diagnonistics completed by someone other than nissan. please help me.

2005 nissan xterra fuel sending unit has gone bad. vehicle has ~44,000. vehicle instrument panel shows no gas in vehicle after filled with gas.
07/31/201032000

My 2005 nissan xterra's fuel gauge stopped registering the correct amount of fuel in the gas tank. i recently ran out of gas in the middle of an intersection and had to push my car to a gas station in order to fill up. i've found that this is a well known problem, and recalls have been ordered by nissan, but my specific vin was not included in the recall. my mechanic has checked the error codes and agreed that this is the identical problem described in nissan's similar recall.

Fuel gauge stuck at 3/4 tank after fuel up. needle will not move and is inaccurate. several other report same issue related to fuel sending units on nissan trucks and suv's 2005-2008.

After checking a service engine soon waring on my 2005 nissan xterra, i found that the fuel sending unit was the problem as indicated by the p0463 code came up after inspection. clearly this has been a problem on past models and continues to be a defect in current models, as many fellow nissan owners have expressed there concern over a part which may be essesntial to the functioning of the vechile.
03/01/201080000
P0463 code showed up on my 2005 nissan xterra. 80,000 miles. have cleared the code twice, and cel keeps popping up with code p0463.

P0463 obdii code appeared at about 56k miles. my understanding is that this was an issue that was recalled on 1st gen xterras, and is now a prominent problem with 2nd gen xterras. however, nissan refuses to recall.

We have a 2005 nissan xterra and am having the same fuel sensor issue as so many others. we fill up and the gas gauge does not register. the check engine light is on and this causes us to not pass emissions until it is fixed, which is a 600.00+ issue since the gas tank needs removed to fix it. very frustrating since a simple search of the web shows hundreds of nissans in or around 1 year difference with the exact same problem! nissan recalls more than 500,000 vehicles regarding:fuel gauge problem, source of many complaints, being addressed i called my local nissan dealer, they reported that my 2005 xterra vin# wasn't part of the recall. *tr

Fuel gauge recall - nissan i own a 2005 nissan xterra, that is not covered under the recent recall for nissan vehicles with the fuel gauge problem. my problem was on 04/06/2009, and cost me $443.65+tax to have fixed. i have contacted nissan, and all i got was a call back in 3 weeks response. the current recall covers nissan xterras produced between january and march 2006 and between october 2007 and january 2008. the problem existed prior to that, ie: my 2005 xterra. i believe the recall should be extended to cover 2005 models, and that nissan should give me my money back. the problem was not my fault........ *tr

Fuel sensor in 2005 nissan xterra is giving faulty readings ---nissan knows there is a problem and have issued a partial recall, but it does not even come close to the actual models involved. the first time this happened to me, i assumed i had gas as the gauge read 1/4 tank. i ran out of gas on the highway between towns, and had to call for help. since then, if the gauge gets down to just under 1/2, the check engine light comes on and the needle falls to the bottom and reads empty. i have to track my gas usage by mileage, and on trips this is a huge pain. *tr

2005 nissan xterra-fuel sensor went out, therefore you have no idea how much fuel is in the tank. this causes the engine to quit even while driving. crashes are inevitable with your engine dying. parts and labor $600.00+. *tr

Fuel level sensor has failed, and returns erroneous results misrepresenting the level of gasoline/fuel available. while not a highly critical issue to the vehicle itself, this is still a threat to vehicle occupants as there is a danger of running out of gas and being stranded in a remote location and/or in an unsafe environment with little or no warning. *tr

Couple weeks ago my check engine light came on while i backing off my driveway. then my battery died a week after so i thought the reason why my check engine light came on is because of my battery is running out of juice. so, i replace my battery but then the following day my check engine light came on again. that's when i went to my local auto shop and get my x get check. they told that is the error code p0463. *tr

I have a 2005 nissan xterra; and a few months ago, the gas gauge stopped accurately reporting the level of gas in the tank. in addition, the service light came on (and stayed on) preventing me from passing inspection. after doing some research, i discovered that there are many other occurrences of this problem with various nissan models in the 2005 (etc) year. this is a relatively expensive repair (approximately $500) for a fuel gauge sending unit replacement; and if not repaired, we who have this problem all run the risk of running out of gas, possibly under dangerous high speed road conditions! despite the fact that this is apparently a faulty part supplied by nissan, the company has not offered to post a recall and/or pay for this repair. with the number of complaints, and the possible dangerous repercussions of not knowing when the vehicle will run out of gas, i believe that nissan should replace this part at no charge to the consumer. *tr

I have a 2005 xterra with around 50k miles on it. the down to empty mileage has recently not been calculating and last night when i went to fill up the needle wouldn't raise to a full tank. this morning my service engine soon light came on and hasn't gone off since. i have done some research online only to find that several other 2005 xterra owners have had this same problem. it supposedly has to do with the fuel sensor unit. this has been recalled in prior models of the xterra. i am hoping that i am not going to have to pay over 600$ to get this fixed considering it is dangerous and could cause sudden stops and/or fire. *tr

I have a 2005 nissan xterra. i went to the gas station to fill up my tank when the pump clicked off i put the gas cap back on until it clicked. i proceed to start the xterra and noticed the gas gauge did not move. finally after driving 45 miles the gauge moved to the full position. i thought this was a one time occurance but it proceed to happen again and this time the check engine light came on. doing reseach on the web i found this to be a common occurance on 2005 and beyond xterras. having made appointment with the dealer to get this fixed it appears that i will have to get fuel sending unit replaced at a cost to me of $600. upon further research i found that a recall was done on 2001 - 2004 xterras for the same problem at no cost to their owners. i fee that nissan has not corrected the problem and that this recall should be extended to xterras made beyond 2004. in today's economic environment every dollar counts and paying for something that was not corrected is unecessary. *tr

I have a 2005 nissan xterra with 45k and the fuel needle goes to e and then fluctuates up to half then goes down again. the service engine soon light is on all the time. i can't tell what my fuel level is because it is not reading correctly. even when the tank is filled up, the fuel needle reads empty! i have run out of gas on the freeway and had to contact a tow truck service for fuel. i have had the vehicle diagnosed and it would cost me $567 for the part (fuel sending unit) not including labor. i will not pay this ridiculous amount as i have found out through other nissan xterra owners that they are having the same issue. i have found this out through an internet discussion forum. there should be a recall for 2005 and newer models of nissan xterra's. *tr

I have a 2005 nissan xterra. after filling up with gas my gas gauge read empty and after a few miles the service engine light came on and stays on. this is a fault with the fuel sending unit that is very common amoung owners of xterras, frontiers and pathfinders. cost to repair is about $600.00. this same issue was classed as a recall for the 2002 models however nmo recall has been issued for the same problem in the newer models. this can be very dangerous as the car could just stop running at any time. with the amount of owners having the same complaint and the fact that this was a recall on earlier models, we think that nissan should issue another recall on our vehicles and fix the problem. *tr

There was no specific event leading up to failure; i purchased my certified pre-owned '05 xterra 4 months ago and drove it up until yesterday without problem. when i turned on my vehicle after work, my service engine soon light was on. i stopped to fill up with gas on my way home, and noticed my gas gauge would not pass the 3/4 tank position. eventually, after driving about 50 miles or so, my gas gauge (sometimes) returns to its normal position. the service engine soon light always remains on. at this point, no corrective measures have been taken. but in doing my research, all signs point towards this being a fuel sending unit problem that is common in both 01-04 nissan vehicles (for which there was a recall) and 05-present nissan vehicles (for which there has been no recall). *tr

 1. normal use of vehicle. city driving mostly. 2. fuel gauge needle does not correctly show the amount of fuel after initially filling up the gas tank. after some minutes of driving, the needle correctly shows a full tank. then after about 3/4 fuel level, the needle drops back to empty. additionally, the digital gauge does not accurately compute fuel miles left and mpg. this behavior repeats each time the fuel tank is filled. without these functions i am unable to determine how much fuel i have left in the tank. leaving the possibility for being stranded somewhere, if i do not accurately guess at how much gas is left. 3. nothing was done (yet) to correct the failure. a mechanic told me it the problem is probably caused by a malfunction fuel sending unit/sensor. i have also confirmed the diagnosis on x.nissanhelp.com. i am awaiting to determine if these vehicles could be recalled by the dealers and/or nissan, as it appears many people are having the same issue. *tr
