In march 2011 my wife was driving my son home and the xterra began to shake as if she was driving on rumble strips. i quickly scheduled an appointment at a nissan dealer and in anticipation of the scheduled appointment, i googled 2005 nissan xterra, rumble strip. literally dozens of web pages popped up revealing that a defect in the radiator was causing coolant to leak into the transmission, thereby ruining the transmission/radiator. the testimonials detailed my exact experience and also described instances where transmissions would lock-up while driving. i raised my suspicions to cochran nissan in pittsburgh, pa, and they performed a full service check which confirmed that coolant had leaked into my transmission. cochran explained that the transmission was salvageable, but that the radiator needed replaced which i later found out had its warranty extended to 80,000 miles. the problem was, however, that my xterra currently had 101,000 miles, making me a victim of circumstance and the extended warranty of no benefit to me. cocharan replaced the radiator and flushed the transmission at a cost of approximately $830.00. now in february 2013 again as my wife was driving (our two kids), the transmission slipped causing the xterra to stall and lock up and again i am looking at a substantial repair costing well above the $830 previously paid. nissan has known about the problem with the radiator/transmission for years (possibly 2007) and has done nothing about it. damage resulting from a design defect is not something for which preventative maintenance from the owner could rectify. selling a product with design and/or manufacturing defects to unsuspecting buyers that places persons in danger is unethical and nissan should be forced to stand by their product and to do the right thing. please help and protect the consumer.

I was driving on the highway around 70 mph. experienced a loss of power followed by my car running hot. i pulled over and had the vehicle towed to my repair shop. diagnosis was the radiator was leaking coolant into the transmission. the radiator was replaced and the transmission was flushed. total costs $900. possible damage to the transmission unknown at the time. the car is now back in the shop with the same issues slipping/grinding at highway speeds. looking online it seems that a number of people have the same problems with a leaky radiator hose. i spoke with a nissan dealership and consumer affairs and they said that nothing can be done.

I have a 2005 nissan xterra which over the years my engine light would come on for all periods of time and then go off. the first time it came on i ran to the dealership because i could not afford to be broke down. no diagnosis was found (phantom light - $300 to tell no there was no problem) so after that i did not run to the dealer everything the light come one which was most of the time. starting in january 2012 my 2005 xterra would seem to have a difficult time changing over at certain speeds especially 40-45 and 55-60 mph. i mainly drive highway so i knew this was not normal for my car. since the car was still running and i had a state inspection coming up in march-april 2012 i wanted to wait because i cannot be without a car. the engine light remained on from january until april when i went to the dealership. finally in early april 2012 i realized that the heats was not working. at the april 10, 2012 inspection the dealership told me i needed a new radiator ($999.45). they told me the radiator leaked into the transmissions but they were able to fix the problem. the car seemed to work fine after the repair, no difficultly changing over at certain speeds until october 18, 012 when i left work and the car would not start. aaa came and tried to jump it to no avail. towed to local mechanic (not going back to dealership again) and found out about the transmission cooling problem ($1,950.98) and two weeks without a car and $100 towing bill. now i get a letter from about lawsuit with nissan but my vehile

On september 8th, 2012, i got back from a 20 minute trip and was pulling into my driveway when my xterra would not move. transmission fluid was leaking all over my driveway. i had it towed to a service center where they estimated the cost to be between $2,500 and $2,800. when they realized the transmission and radiator had to be replaced the repair bill would have been much higher but they kept their promise and the final bill was $2,856. i am thankful that this did not occur on the highway. i should not have to pay for a defect that is not my fault and that is a possible safety hazard. *tr

Just started moving after stopping at a light, and the engine stalled. would not restart immediately, but when it finally restarted it was missing. every time i have driven this car since then it has stalled, usually but not always after i have stopped or slowed to make a turn. i took it to the dealer this week (1/5/2013) and was told the problem is the transmission and radiator. the transmission is leaking fluid into the radiator and they both need to be replaced. i was told about the extended warranty and the $3000.00 co-pay. i have to fix the car but i don't know where i'm going to get $3000.00. i don't understand why nissan didn't recall the part that fails which allows the fluid to leak into the radiator. that would have saved hundreds of people and nissan a lot of trouble and expense. there shouldn't be any co-pay since nissan could have prevented this. *tr

My wife was driving the vehicle during the afternoon on a sunny day. the incident occurred while she was exiting the entrance ramp onto i-75 north from business i-75. while accelerating to merge (approximately 60mph) the transmission began to fail, causing the vehicle to jerk and hesitate making it difficult to control the vehicle. the entrance ramp enters the freeway in the left lane, she was able to avoid the other cars and get her vehicle off to the right shoulder but there was a near miss. upon contacting nissan they informed me they are aware of the problem but they didn't feel they needed to report the defect to me, and therefore endangering me and my family, because nhtsa had not forced them to into a recall. *tr

I recently had to replace my radiator and transmission due to the known 2005 nissan xterra radiator problem. the problem started off as heavy vibration when gears shifted, and the heater was noticeably not as warm as it had been. after a short amount of time with the vibration issues, the transmission got to a point where the vibrations would last longer, meaning the vehicle was not shifting gears reasonably. this became a serious safety issue when i was merging onto the interstate one day and my overdrive completely missed, leaving me in basically neutral at approx 50mph with no ability to accelerate with a car almost slamming into the rear of me since it could not move out of the lane to avoid me. for this not to be considered a safety issue is very ridiculous. a failing transmission is most certainly a safety issue when it fails while you are driving. nissan may have agreed to have this repaired for free for vehicles under 80000 miles, but the likelihood of this problem occurring is past 80000 miles. nissan should not only be responsible for the cost of this repair, but nissan should also be responsible for letting owners know of the symptoms, problems, and associated safety concerns with a failing transmission. as far as i am concerned, nissan has failed in every aspect of dealing with such a costly issue. *tr

Like many other xterra of this year, the radiator was faulty and leaked antifreeze into the transmission. consequently i had to replace the radiator, have it serviced for 1177.00 dollars and then was told by the dealership that it was not covered because it was not a safety recall even with a high failure rate for this model. thinking the radiator was the root cause of the vehicle driving problems i was assured nothing else was wrong with the xterra. i continued to research this problem as i had continued trouble with the transmission and being towed several times. i was told that the radiator leaked antifreeze into the transmission rendering it inoperative and needing a full replacement. i then paid 3550.00 for a new transmission. again, i was told by nissan that this was not covered by any warranty and that they were aware of the problem with this model and year. after more research, i discovered there was thousands of people complaint of the same issue and nissan telling their customers that it was out of there hands and not in high enough incidence for a recall. i understand that there is a class action lawsuit for customers to be repaid for these repairs and my family and i hope nissan does the right thing and pay their customers back for their mistake and faulty parts. *tr

Left and right rear axle seals blew out and leaked differential fluid. differential fluid leaking on rear brake rotors which could cause brake failure, which was a major safety concern to me. at time of failure no suspension modifications had been done to vehicle. also, the rear differential oil will slowly leak and cause the rear differential to lose fluid and fail. the leaking differential fluid has also contaminated the parking/emergency brake shoes and they will not hold or slow vehicle. *tr

January 2012 one morning i was driving at hwy speed on the freeway when out of nowhere lost total power. i stepped on the gas and my truck went from 60 to 10 miles an hour. thank god it was close to an off reap and i was able to get off the freeway. i took the car to nearest auto repair shop. after examination of transmission they found large amount of white subtend in the transmission fluid but they could not determent what that was. next day i drove the truck to nissan dealer and they told me that because of the defect in the radiator the anti-freeze was leaking to the transmission and causing it to seize and both components need to immediate replacement. the mechanic told me that the failure is a known problem and that is occurs with no warning, no engine light, no noticeable deterioration of performance, it just happens. since i was not in any position to pay for this repair, i took my truck home and try to contact nissan for help. on january 16, i contact the nissan consumer affairs again and requested an exception to the 80k miles limitation. nissan consumer affairs took 2 weeks to review my case before denying it. the failure of nissan to stand behind their products, particularly when the problem represents a serious safety concern and attributable to a design flaw, is inexcusable. nissan denies that there is a safety concern, whereas they should have acknowledged responsibility for their error and issued a recall. how many accidents or fatalities need to occur over the coming years before nissan is held accountable for their negligence? my local nissan dealer estimated it would cost $5368 to repair my xterra. this represents a significant financial burden and hardship -- especially on a vehicle with just over 100k miles. how many nissan owners have to experience this type of financial hardship before nissan is held accountable?

While driving on the 73n freeway in orange county, my car started shuddering. the temp gauge was ta the max so i pulled over. i was towed in to a nissan dealership where the master mechanic told me that the problem was caused by the transmission cooler in the radiator failing causing radiator fluid and transmission fluid to mix rendering both inoperable. he also told me that this is a growing problem with nissan and he has personally seen many such cases. he said that nissan is using defective radiators which is the main cause of this. *tr

On october 30, 2012 while driving at highway speeds the transmission on our 2005 nissan xterra gave out. we took it to a transmission shop who informed us that nissan's had an inherent problem with the cooling system leaking into the transmission. we were informed it would be 6k to fix the vehicle. we have contacted nissan and have been told that a warranty extension has been granted to 80,000 for full restitution and under 100,000 for 50% restitution. even though we have barely over 100,000 miles, if it had not been for the pure negligence of nissan not doing a recall on these vehicles when they became aware of the rampant problem, our vehicle would not have suffered a complete transmission/coolant system failure which has resulted in significant financial loss. we request that nissan change their extension of the warranty to a complete recall and reimburse us for any loss. we feel this is fair based on the fact they knew of the problem and negligently failed to act upon it. *tr

Two years ago my 2005 nissan xterra began rattling, shaking and not heating when idling. i took it for diagnostics at my mechanic he thought it may be a u joint or tire problem. recently, this problem is getting worse. i took it to the dealer after searching the nissan website which has recently posted an extension of the radiator/transmission warranty due to the many reported problems of radiator fluid leaking into the transmission and destroying the transmission. my xterra has 84000 miles on it. i was just told by nissan that they will rebuild the transmission due to the defective manufacturing, however i must pay a co pay of 2500.00 dollars since i am over the 80,000 miles. this is ridiculous. they say it is dangerous for me to driver if i don't pay to replace it. why isn't this a recall item ? how can anyone justify not recalling a defective radiator/transmission on a car with less that 100,000 miles on it ? this must be stopped. nissan must be forced to make right the defective engineering used in it's automobiles. the customer who paid full price for a new car should not have to bear any of the cost for this defective and dangerous workmanship. *tr

On september 18, i took my nissan xterra tot he dealership and made an appointment because it had a horrible shifting vibration and was jumping in between gears. however, after making the appointment for the next day, i was rear-ended and had to have body repairs made. i got the car back. the vibration was still there, of course, because the vibration had nothing to do with the body. i was in town where the dealership is located on october 18. i was pulling out of a drive onto a busy road. no power, the car only moved with gravity rolling toward the road and the engine revved with the gas. i stopped quick enough to avoid rolling onto the road which has a 45 mile an hour speed limit where i was. i shut the car off. i started it back up and with my foot on the brake i ran the shifter through the gears. when i tried to accelerate, it had some power, but it was clearly diminished. i headed for the dealership. the car was jerking so hard that it clunked my teeth together and made my neck and back hurt. i got to the dealership. it appears that my radiator rusted or cracked and leaked the fluid into my transmission causing it to destroy my transmission. all total, the repairs would be about $6,300. the car sits at the dealership because i am unemployed and cannot pay that on a car that i have managed while being unemployed since february to continue $482.58/mo payments on and having only 6 left!!! nissan refuses to help me because i have over 100,000 miles on the car. how would they have liked it if i had rolled into traffic and gotten killed or hurt? and, the person from nissan consumer affairs told me that they had just extended the warranty to 100,000 because of this problem. so, they even know it is a major problem. *tr

Transmission failed due to leakage of coolant from radiator into the transmission. this appears to be systemic to this model and year of vehicle. nissan has only taken action after the filing of a class action lawsuit. nissan has clearly been aware of this isssue for at least four years and has only sent a vague letter regarding an extended warranty on the radiator, not noting the possibility of a catastrophic transmission failure, nor a campaign to fix the issue. *tr

Having the same problem as the rest of the 2005 nissan xterra owners - transmission & radiator failed; coolant looks like chocolate milk....leaked into the transmission & i now have transmission failure! talked to nissan about this, they only cover certain vin numbers & mine was not one of them! seriously?!?!?! god willing, there will be no more nissan's for my household! *tr

On september 18, i took my nissan xterra tot he dealership and made an appointment becasue it had a horrible shifting vibration and was jumping in between gears. however, after making the appointment for the next day, i was rear-ended and had to have body repairs made. i got the car back. the vibration was still there, of course, becasue the vibration had nothing to do with the body. i was in town where the delaership is located on october 18. i was pulling out of a drive onto a busy road. no power, the car only moved with gravity rolling toward the road and the engine reved with the gas. i stopped quick enough to avoid rolling onto the road which has a 45 mile an hour speed limit where i was. i shut the car ioff. i started it back up and with my foot on the brake i ran the shifter through the gears. when i tried to accelerate, it had some power, but it was clearly diminished. i headed for the dealershiop. the car was jerking so hard that it clunked my teeth together and made my neck and back hurt. i got to the dealership. it appears that my radiator rusted or cracked and leaked the fluid into my transmission causing it to destroy my transmission. all total, the repairs would be about $6,300. the car sits at the dealership because i am unemployed and cannot pay that on a car that i have managed while being unemployed since february to continue $482.58/mo payments on and having only 6 left!!! nissan refuses to help me bacause i have over 100,000 miles on the car. how would they have liked it if i had rolled into traffic and gotten killed or hurt? and, the person from nissan consumer affairs told me that they had just extended the warranty to 100,000 becasue of this problem. so, they even know it is a major problem.

My nissan xterra started vibrating violently while traveling at high speed on the interstate. i sent the vehicle to the dealership to have it fixed. the cause of the problem is a faulty transmission cooler that leaks water into the transmission. after some research i find that this is a common problem with this model vehicle. here is the reference # dp12004. *tr

In january 2012 one morning i was driving at hwy speed on the freeway when out of nowhere lost total power. i stepped on the gas and my truck went from 60 to 10 miles an hour. thank god it was close to an off reap and i was able to get off the freeway. i took the car to nearest auto repair shop. after examination of transmission they found large amount of white subtend in the transmission fluid but they could not determine what that was. next day i drove the truck to nissan dealer and they told me that because of the defect in the radiator the anti-freeze was leaking to the transmission and causing it to seize and both components need to immediate replacement. the mechanic told me that the failure is a known problem and that is occurs with no warning, no engine light, no noticeable deterioration of performance, it just happens. he said that in a worst-case scenario, the vehicle?s transmission could seize causing an immediate stop and loss of control. since i was not in any position to pay for this repair, i took my truck home and try to contact nissan for help. on january 16, i contact the nissan consumer affairs again and requested an exception to the 80k miles limitation. nissan consumer affairs took 2 weeks to review my case before denying it. the failure of nissan to stand behind their products, particularly when the problem represents a serious safety concern and attributable to a design flaw, is inexcusable. nissan denies that there is a safety concern, whereas they should have acknowledged responsibility for their error and issued a recall. *tr

While out of town at a family wedding i noticed a shuttering noise while driving my 2005 nissan xterra. from time to time there was a loss in acceleration. although we were not involved in any accidents we were lucky to have not been rear ended from losing speed on the freeway. after some research on this issue i have come across numerous reports on a problem with the radiator leaking into the transmission. i went to have my truck looked at and it was confirmed that i have the same problem. nissan knows about this because of the numerous reports, but there has not been a recall. the only thing done was an extended warranty. from what i can tell - by the time you start experiencing these problems you are way over the warranty. this could have been a very dangerous situation, thankfully it wasn't. now we, the consumers, are left with paying for nissan's faulty parts...that could pose a serious risk of an auto accident. *tr

Our daughter was driving home, late at night, when the engine began making strange sounds and lurching at about 50 mph. she was only a few blocks from home, so drove home very slowly. on later inspection, my husband found the radiator/transmission issue and looked on the internet to see if others had this problem. we were horrified to discover that many, many, many nissan owners have the same exact problem of coolant in the transmission. (our xterra has just over 100,000 miles.) this is obviously a well known issue with nissan, but nothing has been done. we spoke with a regional manager with nissan who listened politely, said she'd look into it, and had her assistant finally call us over a week later (she promised four days) to say nothing could be done. something can be done! i encourage anyone with this same problem to write to nissan, send a cc to your better business bureau, and submit complaints to consumer awareness groups to document this problem and get nissan to act responsibly for their faulty radiator. this is a major, costly, potentially dangerous issue that should never have occurred in the first place. we love our xterra, faithfully change the oil, and have recommended it to so many other people. it feels like a slap in the face that nissan will not admit their role in this problem and do something about it! *tr

Radiator broke down which causes the transmission fluid to be mixed with radiator fluid. this kills both the transmission and radiator. this was a well known and defined problem by nissan and they never did anything about it. total bill is well over $5k for transmission, radiator, labor.

I was noticing a difference in the shifting of my vehicle and took it to a transmission specialist who discovered i had radiator fluid mixed in with my transmission fluid. i was told my radiator needed to be replaced and the transmission flushed, which may or may not solve the problem. there was hope this would work as i caught the problem early and never had a service code pop up. i paid $1110 for this work. subsequently i contacted my nissan dealer who told me it was related to the radiator problem that nissan had extended the warranty on. i contacted nissan and made a claim for reimbursement and for the problem to be rectified completely. nissan advised me to take the vehicle to the dealer at my own expense for a diagnosis. the nissan dealer verified that indeed my problem was due to the radiator issue and my transmission needs to be replaced. i contacted the manufacturer again and when i told them this i was told my vehicle had surpassed the extended warranty of 80,000 miles and they would not assist. during my research, i have discovered that most of the people with the same problem were also over the 80,000 miles granted by nissan. my transmission completely stopped shifting and is parked in my driveway. i feel the extended warranty notice sent by nissan was very misleading. it stated a radiator issue which in no way identifies that is only the culprit and not that the transmission will be impacted and rendered useless. it would have been such an easier option to replace a radiator and continue to have transportation, then to have a lawn ornament. by the way...why was there never a service code light that alerted to the problem? *tr

Transmission locked in one gear which caused dangerous circumstances on well traveled roads. subsequently, it operated normally, but the problem recurred. the occurrences were intermittent, and if occurred on a highway in heavy traffic could have resulted in an accident and injuries. nissan has admitted there is a problem/defect by extending the warranty to 80,000 miles. however, this defect affects vehicles beyond 80,000 and is a significant safety concern. i understand the defect has to do with a cooling system in the transmission which is prone to cracking resulting in the mixing of radiator fluid and transmission fluid, ultimately rendering the transmission inoperable. *tr

Brought a used 2005 nissan xterra from a dealer in eugene oregon on october 13, 2011. on july 31, 2012 the radiator leaked fluid into the transmission disabling the vehicle. took it to the deals where i have an extended warranty ( 12 months or 12,000 miles) only to be told that the radiator caused the problem to the transmission, which meant both are not covered by the warranty. *tr

My 2005 nissan xterra started having some problems early in july. on or about july 5 i was pulling onto highway 30 in montgomery illinois. there was oncoming traffic. i pushed the gas and proceeded to merge on to the highway. the car moved very slowly almost causing an accident. i pulled over out of traffic and rested car for approx 5min. when i began to accelerate again the car performed normally. i took to a mechanic who stated that the radiator fluids had mixed with the transmission fluids causing the transmission to slip and fail. after hearing this i went online and observed that over 500 people have also experienced the same problem and that it is a defect in the manufacturing of all 2005-2010 trucks and suv's. i have asked nissan to repair my car at their expense since it is a problem they knew about. they first stated they did not send me the original info on this problem because they did not know i owned the car. this is not true. they had previously sent me information about a tow bar issue/recall and a nissan dealer in san jose ca fixed that problem. i believe that nissan intentionally did not inform owners because they wanted the mileage to exceed what they were offering (80,000). had i known i would have had my truck looked at long before the mileage expired. what happened to me could happen to a family and if they were to pull into ongoing traffic an accident would certainly occur. this is very dangerous and nissan needs to do the right thing. i appreciate you opening an investigation on this and hope you get results before someone dies. *tr

Brought a used 2005 nissan xterra from a dealer in eugene oregon on october 13, 2011. on july 31, 2012 the raditator leaked fluid into the transmission disabling the vehicle. took it to the deals where i have an extended warrenty ( 12 months or 12,000 miles) only to be told that the radiator caused the problem to the transmission, which ment both are not covered by the warrenty.

*tr

Failure of radiator causes engine coolant to mix with transmission fluid causing transmission destruction. while driving on the highway, vehicle shakes violently and shifts hard during slower driving. happens to be a very common problem i was un aware of, until it was too late. dealer service dept advised me it was a $8,000 known issue and instructed me to contact nissan about helping with repairs. *tr

After proceeding from a traffic light at about 25-30mph, the vehicle's transmission suddenly just disengaged. i managed to pull the vehicle on the side of the road, stop and placed it in park. then i placed it in drive and stepped on the gas but it would not go forward. i then placed it in reverse, backed up a few feet and again placed it in drive. it did engage and i proceeded towards home at a speed of no more then 10-15mph. i had to do the pull over, reverse to drive exchange numerous times before i made it to my destination. once there, i placed the vehicle in park, waited a few minutes, placed it in drive and it would not engage. *tr

Radiator failure causes transmission and engine coolant to mix causing catastrophic transmission failure. nissan knows about this problem but has decided to turn their backs on their responsibilities and hope fending off class action lawsuits will be less expensive than fixing the issues they have caused. this is ignorant and arrogant on their part. not only will this hurt those of us who are scraping by, but it will hurt nissan in the long run, as nobody who is experiencing what i and many others are going through currently through will ever, ever but their products again. i submit that the president of nissan usa be forced to attempt to drive my xterra to and from work or school with his family . when he about causes a wreck or endangers his family, maybe he will see then the fatal errors of his faulty money hungry calculations. this is absolutely ridiculous that our great country hasn't forced these people to do the right thing, since they obviously cannot do it on their own. *tr

I am the original owner of a 2005 nissan xterra. i have had all repairs and services done at dealership and had an extended warranty until approx 94k miles. i brought xterra to dealership in august 2011 for service and was advised at that time that i had complete transmission failure but not to worry because it was under warranty. the transmission was replaced and they were never able to tell me why the transmission failed in the first place. i had a warranty on the new transmission for 12k miles to approx 104k miles. i brought my xterra to dealership in may 2012 for jerking at approx 105k miles, just past the new transmission warranty. i was advised that i had an inter cooler leak where coolant was mixing with my transmission fluid and that the problem could not be repaired that i would have to junk my xterra. i was assured however that i did not have anything wrong with the new transmission. nissan flushed all my fluids at a cost of $254, told me to drive the xterra as much as i could for the next three weeks and bring it back to them and then they would confirm if that in fact was the problem. i talked to several mechanics including two nissan mechanics and was told that i would not have to junk the xterra that i would have to replace the radiator and transmission and not to drive the truck until it was repaired. i was also advised to contact nissan north america. i contacted nissan and they told me after there investigation that i was too far out of warranty and there was nothing they could or would do to assist me financially in repairing the damage. i am also aware that nissan knew about there defective radiators and there is a class action lawsuit against them for this exact problem.

Nissan's 2005 xterra has a major flaw in its cooling system and transmission. apparently the coolant in the radiator leaks into the transmission causing the transmission to fail. this is very expensive as the radiator and the transmission have to be replaced. flushing the system is not enough. this should have been recalled and repaired by nissan before the problem became costly. apparently nissan has known about this for some time. this is disgraceful.

Driving on a busy road the x-terra stopped moving forward. pushed the vehical into a parking lot. insurance company towed it to the dealership. they investigated and found a fluid contanination between the radiator and transmission. spent $5300 to get it fixed. this is apparently a known problem. i expect the transmisson to eventually fail, but not at 113k miles. but, i think this is something else - a design/flaw. the web is full of transmission complaints for a 2005 nissan xterra, as well as a class action lawsuit.

My wife was driving home from the grocery store when her nissan xterra would not shift out of first gear (it's an automatic). she had to drive home in first gear and keep it under 15 mph. the dealership informed us that the faulty radiator leaked coolant into the transmission causing a transmission failure. this is apparently a widely known issue with nissan, but we were unaware of it until this occurred. nissan is aware that the radiators in this model have been known to leak into the transmission, but they never notified my wife (she's the original owner) or else we would've taken steps to prevent this from happening. thank god she wasn't on the highway when this happened. this issue needs to be taken more seriously before someone ends up in a fatal collision as a result. even though my wife suffered no physical harm, we're now facing a $6100 repair bill.

I've noticed recently that my xterra started shuddering while cruising at highway speeds, and has been shaking while shifting between gears. additionally, there was a specific occasion where my vehicle stopped accelerating while merging onto the highway. when i took it to a local nissan dealership for to fix a separate recall notice, i was told that my transmission fluid had mixed with my coolant, which meant that i would need to replace both my transmission and radiator.

Transmission failed while trying to accelerate across an intersection almost causing me to be hit by on coming cars. nissan is aware of the problems with these cars and has not recalled. i feel this is poor business and will result in loss of life!

While driving my xterra i started to notice it shuddering and vibrating while driving to work. this was getting worse so i brought it in to be looked at and they new what it was from the moment i drove in. they told me it was my transmissioin and they have fixed multiple xterras with this problem. so naturally the waranty has expired so my cost is 3800.00.
02/15/201295000
As with most of the 2nd generation xterras, my radiator failed causing coolant to mix with transmission fluid. this causes the transmission to seize up and/or an inability to shift. i first felt shuddering while shifting into 4th (automatic transmission). i immediately recognized a problem and and began driving to my mechanic. i entered the freeway and found myself unable to get out of 1st or 2nd gear - i could not drive faster than 20 miles per hour with traffic traveling at 65+ and no shoulder. this is a serious safety issue. nissan has acknowledged the problem and extended their warranty to 80,000 miles but apparently this issue happens between 85k and 100k typically (my issue came to light at around 95,000). i was in serious danger on the highway and this is not an isolated incident by any means.

Rattle shake feel at 45 mph. loosened transmission drain plug. transmission fluid has antifreeze mixed with it.

Went to pull out into traffic and experienced tranny slipping. i was very lucky not to be involved in an accident. check engine light came on took my vehicle to the dealership and they told me what was wrong and that they have been seeing this problem more and more frequently. it wud seem nissan is aware of the manufacturing defect in the radiator which causes fluid to leak into the tranny thereby slowly destroying the transmission, they offered an extended warrant to 80,000 miles but thru research i have discovered that this problem does not manifest itself until around 100,000 miles. i was never contacted by nissan about this issue and there is no recall but hundreds of complaints. it is obvious that if nissan does not resolve this issue there are going to be accidents and maybe even deaths related to this manufacturing defect.

My 05 xterra has a leak from the the radiator in the transmission due to a defect in the lines. now i have to replace the transmission and the radiator which will cost $6000. i filed a claim with nissan to try and get this repair covered. i was denied because nissan said this is not a problem other people are having. if you are also having this problem you need to open a claim with nissan to show them there is a real problem here. the rep i talked to is named kim and her personal work line is 615-725-7205. please open your claim with her and prove to nissan that there needs to be a recall for this problem.

While driving, the engine cuts off without warning causing all systems to shut down, including brake assist and power steering causing a near collision twice, once while navigating a curve at low speed with a ditch on the right side and once while navigating a curve at higher speed and nearly coasting into oncoming traffic. the issue is due to a known defect in the radiator causing coolant to spill into the transmission. this is a major safety concern that appears in vehicles without warning in any circumstance at any speed. please initiate a recall asap for our safety!

My 2005 nissan xterra with 85000 miles has a vibration which feels like driving on rumble strips that comes and goes. there is also the smell of antifreeze and the heat works spordically at idle. looking at everyones elses post it looks like this is a known issue with the 2005 xterra that nissan is not fixing. there should be a recall on this so that nissan can make the adequate repairs.

My husband and i purchased our 2005 nissan xterra, 17 miles young. exactly one month after we purchased, the rear differential went out and was covered under warranty. no problems for a few years, until we noticed that the gas guage was not giving accurate readings, we had to watch our odometer count to make sure we didn't run out of gas, which is a very scary thought when you have two young children. this happened when we had approximately 80000 miles on the truck and $600 to repair. shortly after, the transmission was acting up and the heater wasn't working. no why wasn't that working? apparently, nissan thought it would be a cool trick to have the radiator leak into the transmission.... brilliant business plan they have. took the truck in and had to pay $5800 to have the transmission, radiator and computer all replaced. this financial hardship was in fact a hardship. one that shouldn't have had to happen had nissan provided quality parts and provided stellar service. i will sue nissan for this major safety issue, blog/facebook my little heart away about how insincere of a company nissan is and never ever-ever-ever give them a positive recommendation.

My nissan xterra started making a vibration sound around august of 2011. it sounded like your vehicle was running over a rumble strip. it was infrequent at first so i ignored it. i did notice some other warning signs of potential trouble (at hindsight). the vehicles heater would never heat the interior of the vehicle at idle, but would do it at speed. nissan knows the issue is a defect but refuses to take responsibility. several times while i have been driving the vehicle it would shudder and almost result in a accident. i have only narrowly avoided a collision on 3 separate occasions. nissan extended the powertrain warranty to 80,000 miles because they know of the issue, but refuse to admit its a defect. had i been informed about the warranty extention i may have been able to have it services while within the warranty period. my vehicle is currently at 83,000 miles, but within the 96 month portion of the warranty. i'm currently afraid to drive the vehicle on the highway because i'm worried the transmission will fail at high speed and result in a serious accident.

Started hearing a rumble strip sound while on smooth pavement. vehicle started shifting harder, with slight vibrations. before i could take it in, i was involved with a hit in run in a parking lot. nissan said the upper and lower radiator hoses were soaked in transmission fluid. manager said it had been leaking for some time. he said i needed a new radiator, and transmission cost of 6500. nissan updated their radiators because they new it was a defective part, but refuse to take care of damage they have caused. see link http://www.nissanassist.com/web/radiator/faqs.php?menu=22

It has come to my attention during a recent horrific event that my transmission has seized due to a failure of the radiator cracking and mixing coolant into the transmission. i had bought an extended warranty plan through my dealer when i purchased this vehicle in 2009. they had an adjustor from carefree car protection come out to look at the vehicle on friday november 11, 2011. with that being said; they stated they do not cover the radiator issue; and since it was the faulty radiator that caused the entire transmission to fail and ultimately seize they will also not cover that or any other of the repairs. upon a bit of research on my own this is a know failure with this particular year/make/model of nissan. there are hundreds if not thousands of documented cases of consumers with the very same issue. there has been no recall made on this at all. yes, nissan extended the radiator warranty up to 80,000 miles but not the transmission. guess what; this happened in my vehicle at 89,000, so not only can i not fix the radiator issue but the transmission is also the same. the worst part of all this is; on wednesday november 9th my 4 year old daughter and i were almost killed due to this known malfunction. we were traveling on a very busy highway in mid-day traffic when the entire transmission seized in the middle of the highway. i have to say, if it were not for my extensive training in emergency vehicle operations by the state of massachusetts , i honestly do not believe my daughter or i would be alive today. the vehicle seized right on that stretch of highway and i had to veer into a ditch avoiding other vehicles, trees, guardrails and jersey barriers. i am thankful that we did survive that horrific even. now i am looking to nissan to do the right thing and make this right. m

Faulty radiator design allowed a crack that caused cross contamination of coolant and transmsion fluid. caused transmission to fail.

The clutch first falied at 2800 miles. nissan replaced it but told me it was bad driving. i have had a clutch my entire life. the second failure was at 52000 miles. nissan told me it was out of warranty so i had it replaced elsewhere with oe parts. it just failed again at 78000 miles and again they said it was out of warranty. i will now have the fourth clutch installed and am looking at other than oem equipment

Interior components of the radiators (internal transmission coolers) break down allowing coolant to mix with the transmission fluid. as a result of the contamination, the transmission and other drivetrain components are damaged and fail causing possible accident.

Transmission shudders violantly periodically between speeds of 40mph and 65mph. brought truck to buckeye nissan in hilliard, oh where all of my repairs have been completed over the entire life of my vehicle and they informed me that i had coolant in transmission and transmission fluid in radiator. this problem can lead to sudden and catastrophic failure of transmission while in motion which could have lead to a serious auto accident.

I noticed a vibrating noise when i would reach 40-50mph. it sounded like i was driving on a rumble strip but was not. one day i pulled out into traffic and my transmission slipped, had my gas pedle to the floor but i was barely moving. i had to swirve into the ditch to avoid getting rear ended! i took it to my nissan dealship to have a diagnositc test done. they called and told me that there was a defect in the radiator causing fluid to leak into the transmission. the estimated cost will be about $1500, to replace my radiator and flush the fluids twice. they stated that this will be a 80-85% chance this would temporaraly fix the problem, but with them not really knowing how much damage there is to my transmission that if this doesn't correct the problem that i would need to replace my trasmission meaning an additional $5,000. i have searched on-line and found out on a website (carcomplaints.com) that there are many other people out there with my same problem. nissan is very aware of this defect in the radiator and has done nothing about it. my warrenty ran out in april and the warrenty on the radiator ended at 80,000 miles. i am in a huge bind not knowing what to do. being a single mom i am very tight on money. i would hope that there are enough complaints for nissan to recall all nissan xterra 2005 for radiator defects. i am keeping my fingers crossed and praying for a miracle.

I purchased my 2005 nissan xterra less than 2 months ago and noticed about a month after i bought it that it had a rumble when driving it, especially when accelerating over 40 mph or on an incline when driving over 50 on highways. i also noticed that upon starting the car there was a very loud thump in the rear end. about a week after these issues became noticeabe, my service engine light came on and when i went to accelerate the car did not move at all... i had to crawl to the side of the road and re start my car. i took it to my local repair show where i was told the code was in the transmission section and i should take it to a tranmission shop. the estimated repairs are very costly and it's obvious that so many other xterra owners have experienced this same problem. it is my only vehicle and i travel 80 miles a day to and from work and am forced to pay for this repair or be without a vehicle that i just purchased and still owe money on. there has to be some responsibility on the part of nissan to reimburse their purchasers for the costly repairs due to a problem that is evidently a design flaw in the radiator and transmission of the 2005 xterra. if so many people are complaining why is nothing being done to aid the victims of nissans poor design?

I first noticed a vibration in my 2005 nissan xterra like driving over speed bumps when letting off the accelerator the vibration stopped. i thought it was a problem with tires, driveshaft or rear end but found it would not happen if i turned off the overdrive. so i googled nissan transmission problems and found that people were having the same issue and said it was due to coolant mixing with the transmiision fluid and causing transmission failure. i continued to drive the vehicle not having the money to do the costly repair and debating wether to trade in the vehicle. yesterday the car left me broke down alongside the road. the vehicle started jumping like like it was going to stall the check engine like came on and the temperature went in the red i pulled over to the side of the road and seen coolant mixed with some other fluid all over the engine compartment and street something must have burst. contacted nissan they told me it was not covered due to being over the 80,000 mile extended warrant but to take it to a dealership to get a diagnostic to determine what the problem is to see what they can do to help.

I am writing to complain about my 2005 nissan xterra. otherwise a very sound car, i have been informed by the dealership that the timing chain guide is wearing down and will eventually fail. the dealer informed me this is common in nissan and my research concurs. my car only has 85,000 miles on it and this repair is estmated to cost me $1900.00. i feel this should be a safety recall item as there has already been numerous safety bulletins on this issue.

While driving down a steep hill, i turned off the overdrive and the dashboard display showed the vehicle had shifted into 4th gear but in fact is was still in od (5th) gear. upon activating the button to shift back to od, the vehicle now shifted down into 3rd gear but displayed that it was in od (5th) gear. i live in the san bernardino mountains of southern california and i need to downshift to slow the vehicle when going downhill and to avoid overheating the brakes with a possibility of brake failure. i have visited two different nissan dealers on a total of four occasions to resolve the problem and they tell me that is the way the vehicle functions and there is nothing that can be done to fix it. although i thought i was buying a vehicle with five gears, in fact when going down hill it does not have a 4th gear.

First problem - when i had 53,000 mi on it, it was still under warranty, it started cutting out and wouldn't accelerate at all, had to have it towed to the dealer to find out that the transmission was bad. they said that he radiator leaked, flooding my transmission with coolant and ruined my transmission. they refused to honor the warranty stating that the tranmission did not fail - the radiator did (which was not covered under warranty) therefore the transmission was not covered. i had to let them replace the radiator and flush the transmission 3 times - it cost me $1,400 out of pocket - now here i am 30,000 miles later and my reverse will not work at all, my transmission needs replaced. so i had paid 1,400 just to buy myself an year & a half and now i need a new transmission. 2nd problem - i have the fuel gauge/sensor problem, also. i filled up one day, got in my car and gauge read empty & check engine light was on. i had a rip-off mechanic charge me $170 to replace the sensor - nothing ever changed, gauge is still broke and light is still on. nissan is so wrong for not handling their problems, consumers deserve to be treated fairly. there should be a class action suit against them - just read these complaint boards. somehow i have both of the most common problems with these vehicles.

2005 nissan xterra 4wd--vechicle has vibration in steering and gear shift accommpanied with a low rumble; mechanic reports problem is in front u-joint;-best to replace both u-joints; also being reported by nissan service department -- most likely will be a recall; entire drive shaft must be replaced, not just the u-joint; additionally nissan service department is reporting part is not available. i have a car with a problem in drive train that needs to be fixed, a manufacturer reporting a potential recall and no parts available. my options are--park car until parts are available (no eta on the parts), drive car with a potentially dangerous problem, or have a used part placed into the car

2005 xterra se. when driving at 1.5 to 2 rpms truck rumbles underneath like it is going over the rumble strips on the side of the highway. acceleration or deceleration stops the noise. rear differential issues have been raised on many nissan and truck forums discussing the later 2000 xterra models. nissan said i need the new rear differential. curious if this is a wide range problem.

I have a 2005 nissan x-terra and the rear differential has burned up. this issue has actually been going on for about a year. i had to take the car in because i was having a transmission issue and the nissan dealership did not think it was the transmission. the service manager rode in the back and thought it to be the wheel bearings. they switched that out but it did not fix the issue. long story short at that particular time it ended up being an issue with the transmission which was replaced but ever since i got the vehicle back in 1/09 is had the whistling noise when going down the highway at higher speeds and when you let off the gas it whistles. bottom line is there was an issue in january 2009 with the rear differential and it was blown off by the dealership and now it has blown and nissan will not stand behind it. i will never buy another nissan. mine has had 2 transmissions replaced and now this all within a year. rear-ends should not go out this easily. *tr
POWER TRAIN - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
12/15/20111260001
The vehicle's automatic transmission disengaged without warning while traveling at highway speed. immediate deceleration, forced us to cross lanes during period of heavy traffic with no ability to control the acceleration of the vehicle. vehicle's automatic transmission would not engage. transmission mechanic stated that failure was rusted internal transmission components. follow up internet research revealed to us that this failure is common in 2005 nissan xterra's. a common component between the factory radiator and auto transmission cooler rusts and fails, causing transmission fluid to mix with radiator fluid. this destroys the radiator and eventually the automatic transmission. during a service call at a local nissan dealership in may 2011, we were made aware of the radiator / transmission cooler leak, and we were advised that the radiator should be replaced. we replaced the radiator. the mileage at the time of this service was approximately 108,000. the potential transmission issue was never mentioned.

2005 nissan xterra transmission/ radiator. radiator leaks into transmission and causes transmission to seeze. nissan is aware of this issue they have not entered a recall on the part.

I was entering onto the freeway about 60mph when the vehicle started vibrating violently. i wasn't sure if i blew a tire or hit something and i instinctively braked hard and drove onto the shoulder of the road. i inspected the front end and could not determine what had gone wrong. i drove at minimum posted speed to the next ramp and exited. on a dirt road on the way home the vibration and shaking started again at around 40mph. when i slowed down the shaking stopped. i nursed the car home. i learned later there is a defect in the transmission of this model caused by radiator fluid leaking into the transmission which corrodes the components. i never received a recall or other notice from nissan. this is a dangerous condition because it causes the driver to take immediate and severe action as it feels like a catastrophic failure of some sort. at high speeds it could cause an accident.

05 nissan xterra radiator leaked antifreeze into the transmission causing the vehicle to not move until rpm's reached a certain speed. car had been vibrating prior to incident which was thought to be tires. car was towed to transmission shop and at a cost of $4800 for repairs. i understand this is a problem that multiple owners have had and that nissan is not accepting responsibility for. i was put at risk as i drive 35 miles each way to and from work and a majority of this driving is done on the highway. my drive time is very early in the morning and very late at night. if the car had broke down i would have been stranded on the side of the highway.

I purchased a new 2005 nissan for my daughter six years ago.....i have the exact problem that everyone else seems to have....a faulty radiator caused coolant to ruin the transmission now nissan wants thousands to replace the tranmission and radiator. also the cadilac converter needs replacing and experiencing the same fuel gauge problem....since i have 109000 miles it is out of warranty....i have not received any recalls in the mail and i have always been the titled owner since i purchased it brand new. i am disgusted that nissan is aware that there was a faulty radiator, this is not caused by wear and tear....but intends on doing nothing. they charged me $100 just to diagnose the problem. my daughter doesn't have thousands for these kind of repairs and the car slips out of gear while driving which is dangerous. it seems nissan should be forced to make these specific repairs since they are aware of the defect.

Transmission failure caused by radiator leak, which causes vibration in vehicle which can be hazardous and costly. internet comments suggest problem is known by manufacturer but warrantees have not been extended, and dealer quoted full price for repair: $5,000+ on vehicle worth $11,000.

In september, 2010 i was driving my 2005 nissan xterra at 55 mph on a two lane highway when it the temperature spiked overheating the engine after pulling over and checking it i discovered i had transmission fluid in the radiator. come to find out there is a known defect on 2005 thru 2010 nissan xterra's, pathfinders, and frontier's in which the radiators internally leak water into the automatic transmissions and causes the violent shaking at high speeds. nissan is aware of the issue and has only chosen to extend the warrantee on the radiators and not recall the vehicles. in fact the letter sent to the consumers doesn't even reference the transmission (in which it destroys). while my family and i were not hurt, it was a close call and could have easily been worse at the speed i was going and the effect the failure has on the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to a garage and the radiator replaced and transimision flushed. while servicing my vehicle the mechanic discovered that the engine head had cracked. i incurred over 2,400 dollars in repairs...using a used replacement engine. nissan corporation after 9 weeks of waiting has informed me that they have opted not to assist in the repair of the vehicle nor provide reimbursment. on june 23, 2011, my transmission began to fail.

My 2005 nissan xterra suddenly developed a lack of acceleration nearly causing an accident at a stop sign. when taken to my mechanic i was told that the trouble code indicated the tcm and or the front brake solenoid, both of which are in the transmission and they would cost at least $2000 to fix. the dealer would not talk to me or return my calls after letting me know that a fix would cost @$5000+ i cannot afford to replace this and after finding that it happens with nearly all 05 xterras i will not.

Car overheating, wouldn't run on highway, jerking, couldn't catch speed, radiator blew due to coolant problem which went into transmission needing new transmission. holding up traffic, had to keep my hazards on. extremely dangerous driving conditions. radiator reimbursed by nissan but wouldn't pay for transmission despite clear documentation that it was due to a recall. had to pull over several times on highway to get out of harms way.

My vehicle rumbled a little as if i was going over a rumble strip. then after a little bit of time, i lost all gears with the exception of 4th, this became a safety issue in traffic as slowing down caused the car to almost stop completely in traffic situations. following this, i have researched and found this to be the case for many of the same vehicles. the radiator leaks into the transmission causing transmission failure. something needs to be done!

When getting to a speed of 55 mph and above i would start to hear a rumbling sound. i had my local nissan dealership take a look at it and they told me it was the front right u-joint. i had them replace the u-joint and when i picked it up and was on my way home the same rumbling sound was still occuring. i took it back to the dealership and they kept it a two days and then told me the rear axial was causing the noise the it needed to be replaced. i had them replace it which cost me $2000.00. again, when i picked it up and was on my way home the rumbling noise was still occuring. i went back to the dealership got the sevice manager to go for a ride with me so he could here the noise because no one at the dealership ever took the car out to hear the noise. he said they would have to keep it again to see if they could figure out the problem. they called me 2 days later and told me that a crack in the hose that runs through the radiator to the transmission was allowing antifreeze to get into the transmission and the transmission was causing the rumbling noise. they told me i needed to have the readiator and transmission replaced and it was going to cost me $4200.00. needless to say i was not convinced they knew what was wrong with the car since they were wrong the first two times, so i took it to a local transmission repair shop and had them look at it. they said it was the radiator and transmission so i had them replace both at a cost of $3900.00.

I have a 2005 nissan xterra, recently i have been experiencing a rumbling effect under the vehicle like the feeling of rumble strips, after looking around my vehicle and finding nothing wrong. two days ago my vehicle suddenly stop going in/out of gear and after driving 3 miles to then gym and back i pulled my xterra in the driveway then suddenly a pinkish fluid poured out from under the carriage of the vehicle around the transmission. this cannot be safe whether on the highway or rural road, what has nissan done to mitigate this problem? i understand this is typical for 2005 xterras.

I noticed in the spring of 2010 my 05 nissan xterra began to stall and sputter at various times. i began to notice a pink/rose colored substance on the ground underneath the front of my truck. in july car wouldn't drive at all and jerked when it finally did move. i took it to a shop and got a diagnosis of a faulty radiator. had that replaced at a cost of $1200.00 was informed that the coolant and transmission fluid mixed causing the breakdown. i drove for another few months when the truck gave out in the middle of traffic had to have the truck towed to yet another shop for repair. i was informed that my transmission was toast due to the mixing of the fluids and would need to be replaced/rebuilt at owner's expense. nissan has yet to admit that the 05 xterra's have radiator faults and recall said vehicles. to get the transmission rebuilt at a cost to me of $2500 and yet i am still having issues with the truck. i recieved a recall notice for the ecm relay and had that corrected due to can cause the engine to stop running while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of a crash. my question is if the company can issue a recall for this matter then why not for the faulty radiators that lead to destroyed transmissions. i just got my truck out of the shop and just had the ecm replaced and yet my truck still stalls. when will nissan admit their mistakes and own up to it and recall all said cars and trucks affected and reimburse the consumers for the monies that has been shelled out so far. this is a major safety hazard as i don't wish to be driving along when my truck stalls and i'm rear-ended by another vehicle or by a tractor trailer god forbid. i would like for a solution to this problem and to see that all nissan xterra owners are validated in their concerns regarding this issue. i do hope that in the near future there will be some resolution to this issue as i am not made of money and don't own another vehicle to use at my disposable. thanks

I just recently started experiencing a 'shudder' under mild acceleration between 40-60 mph with my 05xterra, v6 4x4 (~120k miles). feels like my rear wheels are going over a rumble strip and only lasts a few brief moments. took my xterra back to dealer and they indicated possibility of transmission cooler leak allowing antifreeze to enter torque converter and transmission causing slippage; although they checked my fluids and no cross contamination was evident. they recommended replacing torque converter, transmission and radiator...to the tune of ~$5000...there's got to be better answer...and accountability on their part...i searched on line and found that i'm not alone with this issue... a number of folks have experienced the same issue...nissan has even acknowledged a problem and has extended their warranty on the radiator, but not the torque converter, but my milage exceeds the extended period; if they know of the issue, why isn't there a re-call...if the torque converter fails while driving, it will most certainly cause an accident...problem is getting worse and more frequent...there needs to be action by nissan to correct this condition before someone is seriously injured due to a known problem...

Multiple complaints: at approx 55k miles, engine would rev out before shifting gears, at approx. 72k miles started vibration when at steady speed (approx 45 mph), so purchased new tires. at approx. 76k miles temperature gauge would fluctuate and vibration and gear slam increased. at approx. 79k miles blower stopped working and temperature gauge would go up and down. at 80,532 mi. had radiator replaced and coolant flushed and two transmission flushes done, as coolant and transmission fluids mixed due to radiator leaking. transmission continued vibration and began slamming again 3 mos. later. 6 mos. later engine overheated , had towed. engine was bad due to overheating from radiator assembly fault nissan describes. rebuilt engine, new timing chain and timing control valve, and new radiator. still cannot drive vehicle- severe transmission slamming gears, vehicle stalls when you take foot off gas, oil pressure gauge goes to bottom when foot off gas and up when you depress. since, nissan has extended warranty to 80k for radiator assembly can crack and internal leakage of coolant mixes with transmission fluids. i am not covered they say, but if i had been notified of this 2 years ago i would have been. their letter specifically states that it can occur at higher mileages. i want nissan to reimburse me costs incurred and fix my transmission. i have been without a vehicle on and off for 8 mos. of the past two years, and do not think this vehicle will ever run properly due to their negligence to notify owners of the potential problem. i've seen hundreds of complaints. also have had engine light go on and off for last 2 years- due to fuel sending unit problem, nissan has extended warranty for this to 72k. i now have 94k - these issues need to be recalls and owners reimbursed- please investigate warranty extension issue! also had squeaks, battery issue, no start even w/new battery, cleared electronics/radio blown, cds don't eject, driver window won't go up unless pulled

Just bought a 05 xterra for my wife for x-mas. needed 4-wheel drive due to the area we live and kids to be safe. 3 weeks after buying it has started to rumble and not shift to od. at aprox. 40-60 mph it is constant when keeping and steady speed or while cruise control is on and at a slight acceleration. read thousands of complaints with same issues and all have had radiator and trany fluid mixing problems causing both needed replaced. mine has 70,000 miles on it. nissan recommended a trany flush like the thousands of complaints i have read. this just temporarily stops the problem. pretty much till ur warranty is up and they can steal ur money.

Driving of vehicle has resulted in the failure of the automatic transmission. there appears to be a design flaw in the cooling system to leak onto the transmission causing failure. the only option is replacement of the transmission.

My 2005 xterra with 82k miles started vibrating badly when accelerating over 50mph. it felt like i was driving over rumble strips. i called nissan assist on 12/29/2010 and was told my radiator had failed, leaked into the transmission and totally destroyed it. my only option was a $4600 replacement of the radiator and transmission. the nissan assist guy then told me that nissan knew about the problem, but instead of issuing a recall, they simply extended the warranty from 60k to 72k miles (this was an error on his part, because the extension was actually to 80k miles). regardless, it didn't apply to me because i was at 82k miles. nissan is trying to ease the pain with extending the warranty however, they make no attempt to contact you about it. you either need to find it yourself or your screwed.

Beginning summer 2010 2005 nissan xterra (purchased new in 2005) began making rumbling noise (as if going over rumble strips) while driving. incident occurred frequently at differing speeds for the next several months. no other problems were evident at that time. in november 2010 while driving on freeway vehicle began overheating, blowing hot air through air conditioner, and registering hot on gauge. vehicle was immediately taken to local mechanic who was unable to determine problem. the next day vehicle was taken to dealership where car was purchased and told that the transmission needed to be replaced due to radiator fluid leak. after research and finding that this is a common occurance the owner decided not to have the vehicle fixed at her expense and is not driving the vehicle until an agreement is made with nissan. while there were no injuries or accidents in this incidence research shows that there have been numerous reports of transmission failures in traffic either causing or almost causing accidents. nissan's failure to alert 05 xterra owners of this problem that they are well aware of is negligence and risks health and safety. further, it can be found that the problem cannot be fixed by simply replacing the original parts as the parts and design were defective to begin with. research has shown that after being fixed by the dealership the problem has occured again.

On saturday december 18, 2010 i noticed a vibration in my 2005 nissan xterra. the following monday i took it to a dealer for service. i was told that my radiator had failed and that it had leaked coolant into my transmission, causing both components to need immediate replacement. the mechanic told me that the failure is a known problem and that it occurs with no warning...no check engine light, no noticeable deterioration of performance, it just happens. he said that in a worst-case scenario, the vehicle's transmission could seize causing an immediate stop and loss of control. when the problem occurred on my xterra, i was on the interstate travelling 60-70mph. nissan knows about this problem and has extended the warranty on the radiator by 20,000 miles (to 80k from 60k) but they refuse to issue a recall even though this problem affects all of their mid-sized trucks and suvs manufactured in 2005. furthermore, nissan issued this extension to dealerships and not directly to consumers. i was never notified of the change or any potential problem. as such, i have been driving a ticking time-bomb that luckily did not go off and harm myself or my family.

The engine in my 2005 nissan xterra (4wd) began making a slight whining noise. i was notified that the noise was a drive belt. after replacing that item, a slight knocking could be heard. as i was traveling along a major highway my vehicle shut off and forced me to avoid a collision and coast off the roadway. i learned that the noise was from a timing chain inside my engine. the mechanic advised multiple nissan vehicles had been getting the timing chain replaced, and that this was very unusual for a vehicle like mine with only 70,000 miles. the repairs for this cost over $1000 including a tow charge, rental car etc.

2005 nissan xterra- transmission failure due to leakage of radiator fluid from transmission cooling line infiltrating into transmission and causing it to fail. transmission when fails will cause severe vibrations or will seize up. dealership has no specific information about technical bulletins but service persons (off record) confirm increasing number of units being presented for repair.

Problem as described by nissan service tech: xterra was towed to us with the concern my xterra is slipping, will not go backwards, will not drive in drive, only drive in 3rd, hooked up to computer and came up p1716. we confirmed the car would not move in reverse, as it was towed in and parked so that backing up was the only option. the code p1716 is related to the transmission turbine circuit not functioning properly. upon further diagnosis, we removed the radiator cap to find the radiator filled with the milky combination of coolant and transmission fluid. the radiator is a sub-level radiator, where the top portion is for coolant and the bottom portion is for cooling the transmission fluid. the radiator cracked internally causing the fluids to mix. the transmission and radiator need to be replaced to rectify the problems. new transmission is $3215.71 with the estimated arrival date of tuesday, september 21. the new radiator is $538, currently in stock. the labor estimate is $1442.70. the estimated completion of work is wednesday, september 22, with estimated total bill coming to $5560.16 tax included.

I have a 2005 nissan xterra. the transmission had vibration intermitantly. transmission finally went out due to a faulty radiator. this vehical is equipped with two coolers one air and one water cooled. i have read of many complaints for this. nissan knows of the problem and should recall it. i bought this vehical used from pat peck nissan with a warantee. at 6mos i received a letter that the warantee was not valid on this vehical and they reimbursed the cost of the warantee. i feel that they knew this was a problem.

2005 nissan xterra started vibrating while shifting gears and then went into safe mode where driver has little control of vehicle. turns out the automatic transmission cooler lines run through the radiator. the connection failed and leaked coolant into the transmission causing it to fail and need to be replaced ($4500 fix). this seems to be a common problem with 2005 nissan trucks/suvs.

 1. vibrations comming from rear of car at 35 mph. vibration get worst when excelerating to 40 mph, shifts hard, rpm's incresse then decresse(jumps all over the place). occurs all the time. faulty lines between collant system and tranmission. collant mixed with tranny fluid. replaced, radiator, flushed engine, flushed tranny 2 times. installed external transmission cooler and bypassed radiator, so this wont happen again, my have to raplace transmission in future becaues of the damage done to it by the collent mixing with tranny fluid. out of pocket expense $1463.12 parts and labor at a local nissan dealer. i was told that this is a common problem with nissan 4x4 vechices. this should be a recall. and if my transmission goes i feel that nissan should replace it free of charge

I have a 2005 nissan xterra which i don't drive much and at around 50,000 miles the transmission went and cost me $1,600 to repair. now at around 52,000 miles my fuels gauge stop working which caused my truck to turn off in the middle of the highway with my family in it and i see no recall on these issues from nissan .my brother has a pathfinder with similar problems. *tr

 1) transmission was not switching gears properly 2) took the truck in to see what the issue was and i was informed that the radiator gasket had failed and leaked fluid into the transmission and mixing with the transmission fluid 3) a new radiator, transmission and fan assembly is now required to be replaced at my expense because i am passed the warranty. when i asked the service manager if i could have detected or prevented this situation he said no. *tr

2005 nissan xterra, radiator failure , causing transmission fluid to leak into coolant and coolant leaking into transmission, causing transmission to fail. repair cost about $5,000. a source within a dealership said it is common occurrence with 2005 xterras and pathfinders, if caught early it can be fixed ,however most customers don't know this until is too late. there is no notice from nissan on this problem or warning. *tr

POWER TRAIN - MANUAL TRANSMISSION
06/18/201121500
6 months ago, i begun to lose my hand brake that was slipping on an upgrade. had it adjusted with my local mechanic. it worked again after the adjustment. notice about 2 months ago that even on a level ground the hand brake was slipping. since i have 6 spd manual trans, would just leave vehicel on 2nd or 1st gear to prevent the car from moving at park. had the hand brakes checked and even had new brake shoes on hand if it needed to be replaced. mechanic discovered that differential gear fluid was sipping out of the 2 wheel seals and have caked on the brake shoes and surrounding area. the tech discovered that the release pressure valve located on the upper passenger side was clogged and not releasing pressure of gear oil as the vehicle travels. gear oil had no place to go but through the wheel differential seals. it would take a lot of work to replace the wheel seals as the 2 rear axles have to be pulled out and differential gear box have to be opened to unlock the 2 axles. tech removed the pressure release valve and installed hose in place of the spring cap to release pressure as temporary fix. hopefully wheel seals are not broken. will use vehicle in meantime to see of diff wheel seals need not be replaced with the pressure release valve in open position. accident can happen should vehicle run out of gear oil and ruin gear box that has the drive shaft attached. pls let me know of similar incident. thank you for looking into this. that price of that pressure release valve can only cost less than $20 from a dealer in my estimate.
