I was driving on the highway around 70 mph. experienced a loss of power followed by my car running hot. i pulled over and had the vehicle towed to my repair shop. diagnosis was the radiator was leaking coolant into the transmission. the radiator was replaced and the transmission was flushed. total costs $900. possible damage to the transmission unknown at the time. the car is now back in the shop with the same issues slipping/grinding at highway speeds. looking online it seems that a number of people have the same problems with a leaky radiator hose. i spoke with a nissan dealership and consumer affairs and they said that nothing can be done.

I have a 2005 nissan xterra which over the years my engine light would come on for all periods of time and then go off. the first time it came on i ran to the dealership because i could not afford to be broke down. no diagnosis was found (phantom light - $300 to tell no there was no problem) so after that i did not run to the dealer everything the light come one which was most of the time. starting in january 2012 my 2005 xterra would seem to have a difficult time changing over at certain speeds especially 40-45 and 55-60 mph. i mainly drive highway so i knew this was not normal for my car. since the car was still running and i had a state inspection coming up in march-april 2012 i wanted to wait because i cannot be without a car. the engine light remained on from january until april when i went to the dealership. finally in early april 2012 i realized that the heats was not working. at the april 10, 2012 inspection the dealership told me i needed a new radiator ($999.45). they told me the radiator leaked into the transmissions but they were able to fix the problem. the car seemed to work fine after the repair, no difficultly changing over at certain speeds until october 18, 012 when i left work and the car would not start. aaa came and tried to jump it to no avail. towed to local mechanic (not going back to dealership again) and found out about the transmission cooling problem ($1,950.98) and two weeks without a car and $100 towing bill. now i get a letter from about lawsuit with nissan but my vehile

Transmission slipped while driving, then would not shift at all. had to be towed. transmission was rebuilt, but goes into limp mode after a few miles of driving, with a strong odor of hot fluid.

Like many other xterra of this year, the radiator was faulty and leaked antifreeze into the transmission. consequently i had to replace the radiator, have it serviced for 1177.00 dollars and then was told by the dealership that it was not covered because it was not a safety recall even with a high failure rate for this model. thinking the radiator was the root cause of the vehicle driving problems i was assured nothing else was wrong with the xterra. i continued to research this problem as i had continued trouble with the transmission and being towed several times. i was told that the radiator leaked antifreeze into the transmission rendering it inoperative and needing a full replacement. i then paid 3550.00 for a new transmission. again, i was told by nissan that this was not covered by any warranty and that they were aware of the problem with this model and year. after more research, i discovered there was thousands of people complaint of the same issue and nissan telling their customers that it was out of there hands and not in high enough incidence for a recall. i understand that there is a class action lawsuit for customers to be repaid for these repairs and my family and i hope nissan does the right thing and pay their customers back for their mistake and faulty parts.

On october 30, 2012 while driving at highway speeds the transmission on our 2005 nissan xterra gave out. we took it to a transmissio shop who informed us that nissan's had an inherent problem with the cooling system leaking into the transmission. we were informed it would be 6k to fix the vehicle. we have contacted nissan and have been told that a warranty extension has been granted to 80,000 for full restitution and under 100,000 for 50% restitution. even though we have barely over 100,000 miles, if it had not been for the pure negligence of nissan not doing a recall on these vehicles when they became aware of the rampant problem, our vehicle would not have suffered a complete transmission/coolant system failure which has resulted in significant financial loss. we request that nissan change their extension of the warranty to a complete recall and reimburse us for any loss. we feel this is fair based on the fact they knew of the problem and negligently failed to act upon it.

Recently the vehicle has been turning off while in use (driving down the road) and we have to throw it in neutral, crank back up, then put it back in gear. this is not safe. took it in to get it diagnosed and the scan came back reading the catalytic converters could be going out (2 on each side, pretty sure only one side is affected). then were told about an ecm relay recall. mechanics have told us that this can cause the cats to fail. nissan said to take it to a dealership and see what they say. what?! of course the nissan dealership is going to replace only the ecm component of the recall and say it won't affect the cats, while other mechanics at non dealer affiliated shops have more than a few times said it can be a direct effect of the ecm. so we have a case number with nissan and nissan will investigate and let us know if they are willing to pay any towards the repair, or if a recall is issued in the near future we'll get reimbursed for the repair... how about you just make a vehicle without faulty parts and if a faulty part contributes to another part going out, you repair the parts affected.

Having the same problem as the rest of the 2005 nissan xterra owners - transmission & radiator failed; coolant looks like chocolate milk....leaked into the transmission & i now have transmission failure! talked to nissan about this, they only cover certain vin numbers & mine was not one of them! seriously?!?!?! god willing, there will be no more nissan's for my household!

My nissan xterra started vibrating violently while traveling at high speed on the interstate. i sent the vehicle to the dealership to have it fixed. the cause of the problem is a faulty transmission cooler that leaks water into the transmission. after some research i find that this is a common problem with this model vehicle. here is the reference # dp12004.

Radiator broke down which causes the transmission fluid to be mixed with radiator fluid. this kills both the transmission and radiator. this was a well known and defined problem by nissan and they never did anything about it. total bill is well over $5k for transmission, radiator, labor.

While driving down a busy los angeles street during rush hour, my car suddenly lost drivability. the engine rpm's increased, but the car would not engage. nearly got into multiple accidents trying to get to the side of the road. car was towed to a mechanic where a strawberry milk color liquid was found in the transmission. was told coolant and transmission fluid mixing was the cause. required to rebuild transmission, replace radiator and transmission control valve. repair cost estimated at $5050 plus tax.

Radiator coolant leaked into transmission causing overheating. replaced radiator $1200 now required to replace tansmission for $3510 parts, $1450 labor, and $100 fluid at tischer nissan laurel maryland. transmission feels like riding over rumble strips.

Coolant leaking into the transmission ruined both the radiator and transmission.

My 2005 nissan xterra started having some problems early in july. on or about july 5 i was pulling onto highway 30 in montgomery illinois. there was oncoming traffic. i pushed the gas and proceeded to merge on to the highway. the car moved very slowly almost causing an accident. i pulled over out of traffic and rested car for approx 5min. when i began to accelerate again the car performed normally. i took to a mechanic who stated that the radiator fluids had mixed with the transmission fluids causing the transmission to slip and fail. after hearing this i went online and observed that over 500 people have also experienced the same problem and that it is a defect in the manufacturing of all 2005-2010 trucks and suv's. i have asked nissan to repair my car at their expense since it is a problem they knew about. they first stated they did not send me the original info on this problem because they did not know i owned the car. this is not true. they had previously sent me information about a tow bar issue/recall and a nissan dealer in san jose ca fixed that problem. i believe that nissan intentionally did not inform owners because they wanted the mileage to exceed what they were offering (80,000). had i known i would have had my truck looked at long before the mileage expired. what happened to me could happen to a family and if they were to pull into ongoing traffic an accident would certainly occur. this is very dangerous and nissan needs to do the right thing. i appreciate you opening an investigation on this and hope you get results before someone dies.

In march 2012 my 2005 nissan xterra was approximately 91,000 when driving in the highway i experienced a sudden rumble causing me to swerve and immediately reduce speed. i was able to pull over without any incident. after taking my car to a nissan dealership where i regularly service my car. i was told my radiator was leaking fluid and this might have damaged my transmission. since then i have replaced the radiator and presently still experiencing problems. it appears this is common in the 2005 line of x-terras, pathfinders, etc. since my car was over 80,000 miles the radiator was not covered under warranty. now i am being told that i am still to deal with the aftermath of this defective radiator and have to replace the valve body. what is more cause for alarm is the fact that this is a common problem and some people might not be aware of it and find themselves in a very bad accident or even worse a fatality.

Radiator failure causes transmission and engine coolant to mix causing catastrophic transmission failure. nissan knows about this problem but has decided to turn their backs on their responsibilities and hope fending off class action lawsuits will be less expensive than fixing the issues they have caused. this is ignorant and arrogant on their part. not only will this hurt those of us who are scraping by, but it will hurt nissan in the long run, as nobody who is experiencing what i and many others are going through currently through will ever, ever but their products again. i submit that the president of nissan usa be forced to attempt to drive my xterra to and from work or school with his family . when he about causes a wreck or endangers his family, maybe he will see then the fatal errors of his faulty money hungry calculations. this is absolutely rediculous that our great country hasn't forced these people to do the right thing, since they obviously cannot do it on their own.

First incident occurred in april 2011 - while driving the transmission began to fail and would not shift. i had to have the vehicle towed because it would not drive faster than about 15-20 mph. the nissan dealership diagnosed the problem as internal fault in valve body and replaced the valve body. this incident cost me $1568 and a week without a vehicle; went in to dealership on 4/20 and i picked it up on 4/27. second incident occurred in june 2012 - while driving with my kids in the vehicle, on a busy street, the transmission began to fail again and would not shift. once again, the vehicle would not drive faster than about 20 mph. this time i had the vehicle towed to a local transmission repair shop. the diagnosis was fluid is full, but is black and burnt, dipstick for the trans is crusty looking... the transmission shop rebuilt the transmission and replaced all faulty parts, including the valve body. this incident cost me $3865 and eleven days without a vehicle; went in to transmission shop on 6/15 and i picked it up on 6/26. in fourteen months, i have had transmission failure and have had to replace the valve body each time, a very expensive part. it is simply unacceptable that the manufacturer patches the vehicle, instead of fixing it, not to mention charges the owner for their defect.

Radiator failed allowing antifreeze into the transmission
04/22/2012129637
Nissan's 2005 xterra has a major flaw in its cooling system and transmission. apparently the coolant in the radiator leaks into the transmission causing the transmission to fail. this is very expensive as the radiator and the transmission have to be replaced. flushing the system is not enough. this should have been recalled and repaired by nissan before the problem became costly. apparently nissan has known about this for some time. this is disgraceful.

Total transmission failure after engine coolant floods transmission, causing vehicle to lurch and stop. incurred repair costs at dealership of $5,968.89. nissan is aware of this problem on 2005 xterras, but failed to inform owners to replace faulty radiators which causes the transmission failure. nissan secretly extended the power train warranty to 80,000 miles because of this problem (owners not informed), but the transmission failure associated with this issue does not occur until after 80,000 miles. one website, caromplaints.com, as 23 pages of complaints from 2005 xterra owners documenting this issue. ref: http://www.carcomplaints.com/nissan/xterra/2005/transmission/radiator_causes_transmission_failure.shtmlnissan refuses to reimburse owners for the repairs. the nissan consumer affairs file no. for my complaint is 7376383. please help.

Radiator corrosion leaking fluid into transmission. replacing radiator and transmission. replaced vaporizer selonoid and the ipdm unit (voluntary recall) which caused stalling while driving. fuel sensor replaced. mandatory recall on the ecm unit. no notification on voluntary or mandatory recalls.
12/09/201196000
Vehicle failed during operation without warning secondary to faulty original radiator which leaked coolant into the transmission. transmission and radiator destroyed and require replacing. despite extensive documentation of this problem on consumer websites and a class action lawsuit, nissan america and dealership denied any knowledge of this problem and did not accept any financial responsibility. total repairs estimated at $5,000. notifying consumer of and/or replacing faulty radiator could prevent a costly destroyed transmission.

It has come to my attention during a recent horrific event that my transmission has seized due to a failure of the radiator cracking and mixing coolant into the transmission. i had bought an extended warranty plan through my dealer when i purchased this vehicle in 2009. they had an adjustor from carefree car protection come out to look at the vehicle on friday november 11, 2011. with that being said; they stated they do not cover the radiator issue; and since it was the faulty radiator that caused the entire transmission to fail and ultimately seize they will also not cover that or any other of the repairs. upon a bit of research on my own this is a know failure with this particular year/make/model of nissan. there are hundreds if not thousands of documented cases of consumers with the very same issue. there has been no recall made on this at all. yes, nissan extended the radiator warranty up to 80,000 miles but not the transmission. guess what; this happened in my vehicle at 89,000, so not only can i not fix the radiator issue but the transmission is also the same. the worst part of all this is; on wednesday november 9th my 4 year old daughter and i were almost killed due to this known malfunction. we were traveling on a very busy highway in mid-day traffic when the entire transmission seized in the middle of the highway. i have to say, if it were not for my extensive training in emergency vehicle operations by the state of massachusetts , i honestly do not believe my daughter or i would be alive today. the vehicle seized right on that stretch of highway and i had to veer into a ditch avoiding other vehicles, trees, guardrails and jersey barriers. i am thankful that we did survive that horrific even. now i am looking to nissan to do the right thing and make this right. m

Recently i experienced a sudden loss of acceleration as i attempted to merge onto a highway. i was also very lucky that i didn't cause a serious accident. the problem was intermittent at first and then increased. nissan acknowledged a radiator design flaw and extended the basic warranty to lessor of 96 months or 80k miles. i contacted nissan consumer affairs to inform them my xterra was affected by the same problem. while under 96 mos, my vehicle has 89k miles. i requested an exception which was denied. nissan

I was driving my 2005 nissan xterra at 55 mph on a two lane highway when it began to shake violently as if i had ran over spilled lumber or rumble strips. i braked hard as i thought i had ran over something. i hadn't, so after pulling over and checking for loose tires or driveline i continue on perplexed as to what happened. a few miles later it did it again. come to find out there is a known defect on 2005 thru 2010 nissan xterra's, pathfinders, and frontier's in which the radiators internally leak water into the automatic transmissions and causes the violent shaking at high speeds. nissan is aware of the issue and has only chosen to extend the warrantee on the radiators and not recall the vehicles. in fact the letter sent to the consumers doesn't even reference the transmission (in which it destroys). while my family and i were not hurt, it was a close call and could have easily been worse at the speed i was going and the effect the failure has on the vehicle.

I was picking up my children from school and my car just stopped driving in the middle of the intersection while i was making a left turn at a stoplight. i brought it to a trans shop and they said i have coolant in my transmission which caused it to fail. repairs are estimated at $4326 and i am just angry and sick over this situation. not only was it a scary situation to break down in the middle of the intersection with my kids in the car but i am very disappointed in all the reports i have been reading about in the 2005 xterra. i can not afford to fix this problem and this is simply not fair that nissan isn't taking responsibility for their negligience. please help!!

2005 nissan xterra. highway driving and car began to shake violently. it was hard to stay in control for a bit there. hard to figure out what it was but i have. nissan xterra's have a problem with the radiator failing and leaking coolant into the transmission, thereby ruining it. my car has been overheating and the transmission giving out while i'm traveling at highway speeds with my wife and two children in car seats. nissan voluntarily extended warranty on the radiator. that is no help to the consumer as once the radiator fails you also have a bad transmission. please make them accountable for their unethical dodging of a serious problem --- and a dangerous one! thank you.

*** ipdm and double catalytic converter failure in 2005 nissan xterra *** my 2005 nissan xterra engine once shut down as i am driving on a busy street; i had to let the xterra coast a short distance without power to pull over and stop my suv to the side of a safer section of the road. i could not immediately restart the car. after waiting about 15 minutes, i was eventually able to restart and drive the suv. the problem, however never went away. periodically the engine will shut off without warning. it finally got to the point where the car would not start at all. i had to have the car towed twice, including a tow to a nissan dealership in santa monica. the incident began in april 2010. in may 2010, the nissan dealer in santa monica checked the problem and indicated that the ipdm had to be replaced. this was an expensive repair. shortly after the ipdm was replaced, 1 of 2 catalytic converters in the xterra failed and had to be replaced. 6 months later (december 2010), the other catalytic converter failed. i believe the ipdm issue is severe. i believe the ipdm issue is also associated with (and likely to be the cause of) the failure of catalytic converters in the vehicle. in my case, it is double failure since both catalytic converters failed 6 months apart from each other. failure of the catalytic converter is an environmental concern.

I have a 2005 nissan xterra 4-wheel drive. while driving it in snow, ice, wet roads or simply stopping quickly, i hear a horrible grinding noise from the front end. it happens when i apply the brakes coming to a stop. it has to be a condition where the wheels may lock up. also, the brakes let the vehicle loose for several feet and/or seconds before the grinding begins. i am used to the fluctuation of the brake pedal with an abs system. however, i had never heard a sound that reminded me of grinding aluminum cans in a coffee mill. i took it to the service dept when this first happened (december 2005; last incident, april 2010) and they have assured me that this is how the abs is supposed to sound, feel and work. my husband noticed the same feeling/sensation and asked what was wrong with the brakes. i told him nissan says that is how they're supposed to work. it doesn't sound acceptable that an automobile company would produce a safety system that sounds/feels like your differerential is being ground into little metal pieces.
