10V075000NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.from 01/23/2006 to 03/16/2006V (Vehicle)8068903/22/2010MFRNISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.03/03/201003/03/2010
Defect SummaryNissan is recalling certain model year 2006 and model year 2008 frontier, xterra and pathfinder vehicles. the molded fuel tank shells can deform, causing the fuel sender float arm to contact an embossment molded into the tank shell causing the instrument panel fuel gauge to show that the vehicle has approximately one quarter tank when the fuel tank is empty.
Consequence SummaryThis could cause the vehicle to run out of gas and stall in traffic, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the fuel level sending unit inside the fuel tank with a new one that has a modified float arm. this service will be performed free of charge. the safety recall is expected to begin on or before march 22, 2010. owners may contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261.
NotesOwners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov .

The fuel gauge on my vehicle is erratic and does not accurately show the amount of fuel in the tank. it will read full when almost empty, empty when full, or anything in-between. there is no way to tell how much fuel is in the tank which i think is a safety concern. nissan knows about this problem with the xterra fuel sensor but will not issue a recall or fix my vehicle because it doesn't have the right vin according to their customer service people. there are many many other consumers commenting on-line with the same problem. why has a general recall not been issued??? nissan should not be able to get away with knowing of faulty equipment and not fixing it. thank you for your help!

Recall for 2006 xterra with manufacturer date of jan-march. my manufacturer date of my vehicle is august but has the same fuel level sensor issue listed on the recall. this has caused me to dangerously run out of gas on an interstate causing hazardous conditions. problem: fuel sensor indicates there is fuel in the tank when in fact it is empty. it either stays full or stays at half a tank. the service engine soon light comes on intermittantly.

My service engine soon light came on during normal driving. ran the code through a scangauge computer and returned p0436 which is a fuel level circuit high imput. it is a very common issue that make the fuel gauge read incorrectly and could result in a loss of power in the lane of traffic which make for a dangerous situation.

My 2006 xterra had the p0463 code come up, with the 'service engine soon' light, and my fuel gauge not properly displaying what is actually in the fuel tank. the fuel gauge will drop to show empty when i fill the tank, other times it will slowly raise up to show full, but it can be all over the place. i use my trip odometer to know where i'm actually at for fuel. if this is a known on going issue with xterra's, then there should be a mandatory recall. your assistance with this would be greatly appreciated.

Our fuel sensory went out on our nissan xterra shortly before we reached 100000 miles. nissan is aware of the problem and sent a letter out for a warranty only. however, the warranty included 2006 nissan xterras with less than 72000 miles on them. when i did research i found that over 80000 2006 nissan xterras were affected by this. i contacted nissan usa to have them resolve the issue of the fuel tank sensor and indicated i would like the defect fixed. they refused to fix it and indicated it would cost me a little over $400 to fix. i asked them for financial assistance since i do not have this to pay for the repair on top of my $433 a month a car payment. i recently had a baby and never know when my car is empty. the sensor no longer reads fuel levels and is constantly showing empty. i was up for emissions testing this year and can not pass emissions until the sensor has been replaced. i believe since this is such a wide spread issue that nissan should recall the part. just this week my vehicle ran out of gas according to my speedometor i had 100 miles left on the tank it misread and i was stuck with my sreaming 5 month old on the side on the road at night waiting for aaa to arrive . this wide spread problem needs to be addressed by nissan and not just shoved to the side. way to many vehicles are affected for this to remain a warranty issue only!!!!! i have see the stats listed here on nhtsa. campaign id # 10v075000

Defective fuel level sensor, nissan does cover this under warranty but only up to a 70,000 milage limit. if part is defective it should be replaced regardless of miles. i contacted nissan directly and was told sorry, over mileage cannot help. this is a safety issue that could endanger occupants with inaccurate fuel amounts, i.e. un-expectantly run out of fuel in the middle no-where or on the interstate. does it become less safe with more miles, i would think not. nissan should be made to make the repairs regardless of miles.

2006 nissan xterra vin# 5n1an08u46c558708. my complaint is probably the most common with the xterra. the fuel level sending unit.when i refuel vehicle the gas gauge needle does not move to the full line. iinstead it stays on empty only after driving appox 30 to 40 miles will the needle move back up to the full line but also at the same time the service engine soon light comes on. that will stay on for appox 3 trips of using vehichle before it goes back off. i was told 2006 xterras were covered under this recall however my vin number was not.makes no sense why some 2006s are coverered and others are not. to me you either bought a 2006 xterra or you didnt.i bought a nissan because i thought i wouldnt have these problems i thought that was with non foreign vehichles , boy was i wrong. nissan step up tp the plate and take care of this issue which so many many customers are having instead of turning the cheek.

Fuel sending unit on 2006 nissan xterra fails intermittently when tank is low. the gauge will not move to full at gas station after filling--but does so gradually taking about a day or so. this has occurred twice when on vacation, when gas tank gets low (at home, we never let get below half). nissan will not fix unless it is in failure or check engine light is on when you present @ dealer. even when it fails, the check engine light does not come on.

Fuel gauge on 2006 xterra reads empty when it is not. saw online that many people have this problem and in prior models was a recall and corrected but not models after 2005. obviously is still a problem and could run out of gas on a busy highway or who knows what could happen with a fuel problem.

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 nissan xterra. the fuel level sending unit inside the fuel tank has fail. the fuel gauge does not accurately show the level of fuel that was left in the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that they can repair the vehicle at a cost to her. there was a recall nhtsa# 10v075000; component: fuel system, gasoline: storage: auxillary but her vin was not included in the recall. at 32,000 failure mileage the clutch gave out on the highway when driving 50 mph. the vehicle was also taken to the dealer where it was repaired at a cost of $1500 to her. the manufacturer also stated her vin was not part of the recall and they will not cover the repairs of both failures. the failure mileage was 53,000.....mw

Fuel level/sending unit failure, worked fine until fill up and then would no longer read the level of fuel in the take after the fill up was complete. purchased $85 part from nissan and with help dropped a full fuel tank down enough to get the defective unit out and replace it with new unit. no nissan did not tell me about this and no they did not help me either.

Nissan is recalling certain model year 2006 and model year 2008 frontier, xterra and pathfinder vehicles. the molded fuel tank shells can deform, causing the fuel sender float arm to contact an embossment molded into the tank shell causing the instrument panel fuel gauge to show that the vehicle has approximately one quarter tank when the fuel tank is empty. this has happened and been repaired 4 times on my 2006 xterra without resolution.

I had 1/4 of a tank of gas and went to fill up. after filling up my gas tank, i turned on the car, at which point the needle still registereda quarter tank. the check engine light came on.i checked the code and the fuel sending unit/sensor had high input. after coming home and doing research i find out thaat many people are having the same problerm. this needs to be fixed and the cutomers shouldn't have to pay for something that was knowingly faulty from the company.
01/14/201061012
Failure of fuel tank level sending unit to accurately report actual fuel level in gas tank. fuel level sending unit will indicate full fuel, or partial full and then drop immediately to below empty will fuel remains in tank. nissan currently has a recall campaign (nhsta #10v075000) on the fuel level sending unit for 2006-2008 nissan xterras, which provides for the replacement of this part at nissan's expense. however nissan denied my claim under this recall stating that my vin number was not covered under the recall. i indicated that my vehicle was exhibiting the same problem that prompted this recall and that my vehicle should be included since my vehicle obviously had the same defect. nissan north america refused to include my vehicle in the recall and i have been forced to replace the part at my own expense. nstsa should require nissan to include all xterra vehicles produced by them for the years covered under the recall, especially those that are exhibiting the identical problems which precipitated the original recall, and not allow them to exclude certain vin units simply because they wish to do so.

Fuel-sending unit prone to failure on 2006 nissan xterra. shortly after purchasing my used nissan the fuel sending unit failed and had to be replaced last fall. less than a year later and the fuel sending unit is once again sending incorrect readings to the fuel indicator. even after filling the tank the fsu reads as 3/4 full and does not indicate properly as fuel is used. nissan has not provided a replacement part that fixes the problem, the replacement component is the same as the one that was installed at the factory and just as prone to failure. this could lead to the dangerous situation of running out of fuel in the middle of a busy road, bridge or rail crossing. nissan has recalled only selected xterras, but all 2005+ xterras use the same part. nissan says that this issue is a safety concern but has only issues a limited recall when many more vehicles are affected.

June 2, 2009 i had to have my 2006 nissan xterra to victory nissan in mechanicsville, va after being told by nissan's recall representative that my problem has not been classified as a recall. my fuel-line burst and spewed gas in my engine compartment. it cost me $310.58 to have it replaced. june 7, 2010 the fueline burst in the exact same place, this time spraying me in the face with gasoline when i raised the hood-luckily i was wearing eyeglasses. again i was told by nissan recall that there isn't a recall for this problem. the reason escapes me as this is very dangerous both with potential fire and physical injury. nobody has been hurt so far with this issue. in a separate incident, my fuel gauge that is a known hazard began acting erratically a couple of months ago, and i was told that xterras with my particular vehicle identification number do not fall under the current recall that nissan has on this issue. their reason for the recall is that the fuel gauge could read at 1/4 full but be empty and cause the vehicle to run out of gas in traffic and cause an accident. i guess my car will not run out of gas and cause crashes according to nissan, right?

I have a 2006 nissan xterra with 70k miles on it. my gas tank was under 1/4 of a tank. i filled up and when i started my truck the next day the service engine light came on. i tightened my gas cap and the light still remains. my gas tank had also showed that i had an empty tank. it took a day or so of driving until the gauge showed the correct amount of gas.

I have experienced this failure on my current 2006 xterra im at 39000 miles and they refuse to repair it. warranty on this item is 36000 miles. they even tried to bs me when i said there is even a service bulletin out for this commmon repair. this is how it went: me - is there a current recall or service bulletin for a fuel sending unit failure or dtc p0461/2/3 dealer - let me check sir. me - thanks dealer - no sir me - i find that hard to belive because i have it in my hand it is nissan service bulletin ntb07-069b dealer - i do not have that information on me me - service bulletins are created for common repairs so i know im not that only one with this problem.

The instrument panel fuel gauge showed that the vehicle has gas when the tank is actually empty, the vehicle ran out of gas and stalled in moving traffic causing a risk for an accident
01/23/2009490001
At 49,000 miles my fuel gauge dropped to empty and my service engine light went on. it has been erratic ever since, mostly reading empty. i had a friend check out the engine light code and it said it was po462, po463 which is the fuel sending unit. i went on the internet and found a service bulletin out on this problem. the issue has never gone away and continues today. i never know how much fuel i have in my tank except i keep track on the odometer how far i have traveled. i have run out of gas a few times on the road not knowing i was about to run out of gas. i also discovered many other people have the same issue. nissan wants over $700 to fix it. i thought the part was covered under the fuel california emission control warranty and was told no. i went back to a nissan dealer as i have in the past to see if a recall has been issued and found out recently there was. but when the dealer checked my vin number they said my xterra was just out side the range of vins that were covered. the service bulletin says all-2005-2008 xterras applied vins. i have an 2006. why is mine excluded?? also i am not able to get my car smoged in my state with the engine light on. currently the car has not been fixed. *tr

Fuel gage of 2006 nissan xterra reports wrong fuel level. if the fuel drops below 1/4 tank the check engine (ce) light comes on. after filling up the tank it takes about 20 miles of driving for the gage to go all the way to full (not instantly as it's supposed to do). if the car is driven for more than 300 miles, and the tank is maintained above 1/4 tank full the ce light goes off. as soon as level drops below 1/4 the ce light comes back on.

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 nissan xterra. the contact noticed the fuel gauge read full when the fuel tank was empty. the dealer replaced the fuel sender and tank seal april 2009. the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in recall (fuel system, gasoline: storage: auxillary). the contact called the manufacturer and filed a complaint. the failure mileage was 88,833. the current mileage was approximately 105,000.
04/25/201065000
My 2006 nissan xterra's check engine light repeatedly lights up. when i read the error code it is p0463, which indicates a malfunctioning fuel level sensor. i will reset the light and it will illuminate almost immediately. there was no specific reason for failure other than the part is defective. i would not write concerning this issue, except for the fact that it has become so common that there are internet blogs dedicated to the issue. nissan has issued a recall for the same issue on other similar vehicles like the murano in the same year of production. this defective part needs to be recalled. people rely on their fuel gauges to determine if they have enough gas to make it to their destination and this could possibly leave a motorist stranded in a dangerous or inhospitable situation.

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 nissan xterra. the contact stated that he received a recall notice for recall 10v075000 (fuel system, gasoline: storage: auxillary tank). he had not previous problems with the vehicle before taking it in for the recall. when the vehicle was returned, the fuel gauge began to malfunction. he took the vehicle back to the dealership but the fuel gauge still did not function correctly. he called the manufacturer and was advised to deal with the dealership. when he confronted the dealer, he was told that they would have to correspond with the manufacturer and notify him when he could take the vehicle back in. he had not been contacted at the time of the complaint. the current and failure mileages were approximately 90,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan xterra. the contact dispensed fuel into the fuel tank to the full capacity level. he observed the fuel gauge displayed an inaccurate reading. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the fuel sending unit was replaced. there was a recall under nhtsa campaign id number 10v075000 (fuel system, gasoline: storage: auxiliary tank). however, the vin was excluded from the recall defect. the failure mileage was approximately 38,000.

2006 nissan xterra fuel gauge/sender failure at 49k miles with engine service light permanently on.
03/01/200950000
Fuel gauge does not read fuel level anymore. spoke to dealer, was told it was the fuel tank sending unit (or sensor unit) that had gone bad. apparently there was been a lot of this happening in xterra's.

Fuel sending unit #25060-zzooa for nissan xterra faulty, sends incorrect information about fuel levels. subject to recall on certain vin#, but many more are affected
02/24/2009
2006 nissan xterra off road, gas gauge stopped working just over 30,000 (warranty ran out), would fill gas tank and gauge would not reflect filling. sometime needle would move to full for a while, then drop to empty without notice. no way to keep track of mileage. have run out of gas 4 times.
05/01/201079000
After filling tank with gas completely, fuel gauge still reads 1/4 full. this happens 100% of the time since the first time it occurred.
04/27/201070000
 My fuel gauge is faulty. the gas gauge is showing more gas than there is in the tank, then i won't refill when the car is filled up. the truck also has a service engine light on with the code p0463 which is related to the fuel level sending unit. this situation could leave me to stall out due to a lack of gas when the sensor is showing gas in the tank.;
02/15/201015000
My 2006 nissan xterra has a fuel gauge problem. after filling up the fuel tank, my fuel gauge registered full. after a few days of driving, the fuel gauge did not show a lower fuel level. a few days later, the fuel gauge needle dropped all the way down to empty and the empty indicating light turned on. i had only driven 100 miles so i knew that the tank was not empty. a diagnostic check revealed that the fuel tank sending unit may be at fault. (my daughter owns a honda element and she experienced a similar problem with her fuel gauge and had it repaired under warranty.) i am driving the car and must use the diagnostic code reader to cancle the service car light. my code reader says that the fuel tank level sensor is the problem. my car has just run past its warranty period so costly repairs will result when i get the car repaired. could it be that the fuel tank sending units within the fuel tank were manufactured by the same manufacturer (japanese)? i read an newspaper article stating that nissan was to have a recall on this fuel tank problem but their reply to my email was that there is no recall forth coming.

Name: [xxx]. vehicle: nissan xterra, 2006, vin [xxx]. fuel tank level gauge was showing erratic reading and was replaced by the dealer with total charges of $377.93 (including labor charges). i am not sure that this gauge is replaced by the modified float arm. *tr

Fuel guage not working, sudden onset after fueling the vehicle
04/04/201058500
 1. malfunctioning part that nissan is fully aware of (issued a recall of fuel sending unit of several suv's including the xterra) but others that are having the same issues but not part of the recall campaign are not getting replacements covered by nissan. 2. occurs more often than not now; fuel gauge reporting erratic, needle randomly moves, check engine light illuminated. 3. as of right now, a complaint has been filed with nissan corp, to which they do not respond, or seem to have any intention for replacing or reimbursing those customers who have documented failures as described in the recall campaign. i have not purchased a new unit to this date.

2006 nissan xterra fuel gauge giving a false reading fuel level sending unit was replaced
03/15/201030000
Fuel gauge failed and check engine light is on. when the the tank is just filled, the level registers about 1/8 to 1/4. i have to refuel by odometer. this started about 3 weeks ago, i am on my third tank and it still does it.
03/31/2010680001
Recently purchased 2006 nissan xterra and have experienced the following problem: fuel gauge causing service engine soon light to be consistently lit. inaccurate fuel level being seen. gauge reads half empty when vehicle is actually empty. impossible to pass emissions check while service engine sensor is lit. contacted nissan and they are recalling and replacing fsu in certain 2006 nissan xterra but even though i have a 2006 nissan xterra my vin number has not been recalled. spoke to nissan and described the fact that my 2006 nissan xterra is experiencing the problems described in the nissan recall but they refuse to include my vehicle. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan xterra. while driving at speeds of 30 mph, the fuel level indicator began abnormally reading inaccurate fuel levels. the check engine light then illuminated on the instrument panel and the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the dealer advised replacing the fuel sensor. the manufacturer would not provide any assistance. the vehicle has not been repaired as of yet. the approximate failure and current mileages were 35,500. updated 05/19/2010. *lj

Fuel level sensor fails sometimes showing tank empty, 1/4 full, or reads correctly and the obdc system issues a check engine code.. this is a known and common problem with nissan vehicles. nissan has only issued a recall for cases where the sensor stops workign and does not generate a check engine code.

2006 nissan xterra obdii error code p0463 - fuel level sensor a circuit high input: essentially, filling up your gas tank is not registered by the gas gauge, so you run the risk of running out of gas and getting stranded somewhere. the estimated repair cost is very high ...

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 nissan xterra. the contact was driving approximately 30 mph when the vehicle stopped unexpectedly due to a lack of gasoline in the tank. the fuel gauge displayed an inaccurate reading of half full; however, the fuel tank was empty. the vehicle had not been repaired for the malfunction. the failure mileage was 64,000. the current mileage was 68,000.

Fuel sensor level doesnt work at 50k miles in a 2006 nissan xterra. problem seems to be widespread.
05/08/200945000
Sevice engine soon light came on one day. next time i filled my tank up with gas the fuel gauge didn't register and stayed on empty. since then it has fluctuated from 1/4 tank to empty and does not correctly gauge the amount of gas in the tank. ses light remains on.
03/28/201048000
 1. had just filled up my gas tank on a road trip and the check engine light came on. 2. the fuel gage read empty even though it was just filled. it scared me as i thought maybe there was a gas leak. checked around and didn't see or smell gas so continued on home with shot nerves. 3. had the check engine code diagnosed and it read as a faulty fuel level sensor. upon further research on the web this turns out to be a very common problem which nissan has not recalled. it will cost $500+ to fix.
11/01/200986000
6 months ago my 2006 nissan xterra service engine light went on and my gas gauge stopped working. i had a diagnostic check done and it is a p0463 code which is the fuel sensor. nissan wants to charge almost $700 to fix. after researching i found this is happening to thousands of xterras. i have called nissan and they admit it is a known issue there is no recall on it.
03/17/201050000
Many nissan 2006 xterra's recalled for fuel sending device not working, in other words, gas gage does not work. i was told by nissan that they are keeping records of thoe not recalled, may be future recalls. fuel gage does not work. their sonsumer complaint line said stick a stick down gas tank line to see if have gas, ridiculous. how do i have the same problem and not qualify for recall.

Fuel sending unit on a 2006 nissan xterra, malfunction. same model same year as current recall, but not covered under the current recall notice.
10/15/2009470001
2006 nissan xterra. i had 1/4 of a tank of gas and went to fill up. after filling up my gas tank, i turned on the car, at which point the needle did not register the full tank, the needle went to empty, and the low fuel light came on. after driving a couple miles, the check engine light came on. i assumed it was a fuel sending unit/sensor. after returning home, i went online and searched for this problem which lead me to x.nissanhelp.com and i read where many others have experienced the same problem. it confirmed that it has something to do with the fuel sending unit. a similar problem was found on the 2000-2004 xterra models and a recall was performed when the vehicle would stop after not getting any fuel, posing a great danger. it seems that something in the unit is faulty and will corrode over time. there is a general consensus that everyone who is having the problem is experiencing the same thing after having the vehicle for over 2 yrs and with around 39k-49k. if this problem existed in previous models, and it was recalled, the 2005-2007 xterra's, frontier's, and pathfinder's should also be recalled for the same problem. why wait for people to run out of gas and possibly cause accidents and deaths, especially since the problem lies in an integral part of the vehicle. cost of repair ranges from $300-600. *dt

I went to fill up my tank with gas (was 3/4 empty). after fill up, the sensor light came on and the gas gauge continued to read 1/4 tank. *tr
01/20/2010475001
There was no indication of a problem until i topped off my fuel tank. i noticed the service engine soon light illuminate and the fuel gauge did not move. the gauge eventually crept up to near full after approximately 50 miles of driving but the light did not turn off. the same symptoms continue today. i took the vehicle to a nissan dealer and they diagnosed the error as a faulty fuel sensor. nissan advised me today that my 2006 xterra is apparently not covered by the current recall of the faulty fuel sensors. *tr
03/06/2010510001
After filling up the gas tank on my 2006 xterra the gas gauge read empty and the service engine light came on. i contacted the nissan dealer who informed me that this was not related to any recall. how can this be when i have notice many other complaints from 2006 xterra owners reporting the same problem. *tr
02/01/2010395001
After filling up, the fuel gauge still reads empty and the service engine soon light is on. this problem will correct itself after driving for a few days. however, when a fill up is needed again, same problem persisted. i have only 39k on the vehicle which i purchased new and the dealer is now telling me that the fix is $400 - $600 for a new fuel sensor. the safety complaint i have is that you never know how much fuel you have and the possibility of being stranded is very real. after checking out many online forums, this seems to be a trend with later model nissan xterras, frontiers and pathfinders. a recall is badly needed for the fuel level sensor unit. *tr
07/15/2009720001
Fuel level sensor started moving around erratically roughly 8 months ago on a 2006 nissan xterra. now the gauge almost always reads empty which in turn keeps my low fuel light on. this problem has also triggered the service engine light. therefore, i do not know how much fuel is in my vehicle unless i track mileage and this is not completely accurate. also i would not know if anything else might be wrong with my vehicle since my service engine light is always on. *tr
07/07/2009480001
Around 48,000 miles, my check engine light would come on and stay on for a few days. then around 49,000 miles my gas hand would drop even if i had half a tank of gas in it. now my check engine light stays on and won't go off. i've seen on the internet where others are having the same problem and wanted to document my problem as well. *tr
01/20/2010640001
2006 nissan xterra off road, 4x4. fuel level sensor or sending unit is failed causing the fuel level gauge to read incorrectly, or always read empty. this could lead to running out of fuel at a dangerous time. i have spoken to many other owners of this vehicle and like vehicles in this range of model years who have had the same problem. some have had their repairs covered by nissan others have not. *tr
01/21/2010450001
I own an 06 nissan xterra with 45k miles. after topping off my fuel tank with exxon fuel (not a discount fuel), my check engine light came on and the fuel gauge would not show full. after about 45 minutes of driving the gauge eventually crept to read nearly full, however the check engine light remains on. after some research apparently the fuel tanks sending unit is at fault and was a recalled item on nissan xterras produced before mine. *tr
01/21/2010480001
Fuel gauge issue. the nissan xterra is exactly 3 years old and has about 48,0000 mile on it. a few days ago the check engine light came on and code readers says p0463 - fuel level sensor circuit high input problem 1) open or short circuit 2)poor electrical connection 3) faulty fuel level sensor. i searched the internet and it is a very common problem on nissan xterra's, pathfinders, and frontiers. i read there was a recall on older models but haven't confirmed it yet. this problem could lead to a problem as people run out gas when they don't expect too - or else they have to pay $600 to have it repaired because it requires removal of the gas tank. *tr
08/01/2009390001
The fuel level sensor in my 2006 nissan xterra has failed and my fuel gauge is inoperable. after some research, i have discovered that there are literally 1000's of people with the same problem. nissan is ignoring this problem and it is a major safety issue. http://x.nissanhelp.com/forums/xterra/4151-fuel-gauge-problem-service-engine-soon-light.html. *tr

Fuel gauge showed 1/4 full and the car stopped with no gas. filled up from a container brought by my daughter and drove to the gas station to fill up. tank full and the gauge shows empty with the empty light on and then the ses light also turned on. took the car to get a reading of the codes and comes out has fuel pump sender unit which controls the fuel gauge. the solution so far is to control the gas using the mile counter. concerned about the possibility of the pump stop working while driving. 2006 xterra. 44k miles. *tr
12/26/2009600001
After filling tank gas tank today (approx. 1/2 full), i noticed that my check engine came on and stayed on. also, my fuel level gauge did not register that the tank had been filled. i checked the fuel cap several times to make certain the cap was tight - which it was. consequently, i went to firestone for a diagnostic test and discovered that the fuel-sending unit had malfunctioned. i was informed by the serviceman that the cost for repairs was $388. *tr

I own a 2006 nissan xterra. i went to fill up the tank yesterday and once filled the tank still registered empty. a few miles down the road the check engine light came on. the tank still reads empty. as a mechanic i know what the problem is, and from reading online i have found alot of others with my same vehicle have had the same problem. the fuel sending unit is faulty and needs to be replaced. i was informed that the part was not under warranty and feel that with the common occurrence of the part failure this could become a serious safety hazard. drivers have no way of knowing how much fuel is in their tanks. i believe that nissan should acknowledge the severity of this problem. *tr

I stopped at a gas station to fill up my 2006 nissan xterra and after the fill up my gas gauge still read 1/4 tank. after a mile of driving, the service engine light came on. i brought the vehicle to aamco to have the code read. the error code came up as po463. aamco told me that this is a very common problem with the nissans and that i should review other cases on the internet. i have 47,000 miles on the vehicle and have read many threads on websites that show this being a common problem with nissans' around the same mileage. with the amount of problems that i have seen with this exact problem around the same mileage, i believe nissan should issue a recall, especially since the fuel level sensor is not covered under their extended warranty. *tr

The fuel level sensor on many newer nissan trucks is going bad right after the 36k warranty expires and costs the owner an average of 400 dollars to fix. this issue causes the service engine soon light to come on and consequently cannot pass inspection without being fixed. i've seen many many cases of this online on bulletin boards and forums, and it seems to me this is widespread enough that it should be recalled. *tr

We own a 2006 nissan xterra with approximately 55k miles. along with thousands of others, we are experiencing the same problem of a faulty fuel level sensor. our model has 2 fuel gauges--1 electronic that estimates the number of miles remaining (dte) and 1 standard fuel gauge (f----e). after filling the tank, both gauges had intermittent issues. a few fills later, both gauges indicate an empty tank. everyone seems to experience this problem shortly after the 30,000 mile warranty has expired, forcing the consumer to spend ~$500 to fix the issue. since it is clearly a faulty part, nissan needs to recall this part or fix it for free when this specific issue is identified. my pregnant wife drives our xterra daily and i do not feel safe allowing her to drive a car with absolutely no fuel gauge. however, i refuse to pay $500 for a part that was faulty from the start, as demonstrated by the thousands of posts we have found indicating error po463. thank you for your attention to this widespread and potentially damaging issue. *tr

Gas tank was reading 1/4 tank so i filled it and the tank still showed 1/4 tank and within an hour the service engine soon light came on...went to advance auto, received the same code as everyone else who has a complaint about this issue (0463) and was told that it's a fuel sending unit problem. the next day my tank finally registered as being full but the service engine light remained on. had the code reset and now i am cautious about letting the fuel get too low in my vehicle. nissan should be responsible for this not the customer. *tr

I own a 2006 nissan xterra. at the beginning of this year, 2009, the fuel gauge would time-to-time stop working. when the fuel level reaches below 1/2 a tank, the gauge would automatically drop to empty. when this happens and the vehicle is fueled to a full level, the gauge would still not operate. it takes a few miles of driving before the fuel gauge will slowly begin to reach to the top. this would occur every time the fuel would reach below 1/2 tank. after this happens, its a guessing game on trying to figure out how much is in my tank. i have been stranded on the side of the road three times now. i was told by a nissan dealership in another town, there was a recall for that part. when contacting a dealership near me, they disagreed and gave me a price to fix the problem. *tr

After filling up my 2006 nissan xterra, the low fuel light came on and the needle on empty. discount auto parts told me that the check engine light says that the fuel sensor is not working properly. after researching, apparently this is a common problem with nissan xterras and was once recalled in 2004 for all 2000-2004 models, but nissan isn't recalling them anymore. i feel this is obviously a manufacturers error and needs to be repaired! *tr

Today, i had about 1/4 tank of gas and filled up before taking a short road trip. when i turned the car back on, the gas gauge read empty and the low fuel light was on. i pulled over, checked to make sure the gas cap was on properly and started the car back up. the gauge still read empty, the low fuel light was still on, and a few miles down the road, the service engine soon light came on. i have found out that this is caused by a defective fuel system sensor that is a know defect. *tr

I had 1/4 of a tank of gas and went to fill up. after filling up my gas tank, i turned on the car, at which point the needle did not register the full tank. after driving a couple miles, the check engine light came on. i went directly to the dealer and was told that it was a fuel sending unit/sensor and that it was no longer covered after 30k miles. after returning home and doing research, i went online to x.nissanhelp.com after performing a search, i came across many others who have experienced the same problem. apparently it has something to do with the fuel sending unit. a similar problem was found on the 2000-2004 xterra models and a recall was performed when the vehicle would stop after not getting any fuel, posing a great danger. it seems that somthing in the unit is faulty and will corrode over time. there is a general consensus that everyone who is having the problem is experiencing the same thing after having the vehicle for over 2 yrs and with around 39k-49k. if this problem existed in previous models, and it was recalled, the 2005-2007 xterras, frontiers, and pathfinders should get this fixed at no charge to the customer!! why wait for accidents and possible deaths, especially since the problem lies in an integral part of the vehicle. cost of repair ranges from $300-600 ivoq n n n n 65 v

The fuel level sensor on late model nissan trucks and sport utility vehicles fails and reads an empty level after fill-up. the manufacturer knows of this recurring problem and has issued a technical bulletin ntb07-069a to inform its technicians of the procedure needed to correct the problem. this failure occurs without warning, and remains constant until corrected by the manufacturer. the technical bulletin describes the repair procedure needed to only replace the sending unit, and not the entire fuel pump. failure to correct the problem could potentially lead to vehicles stalled on congested highways due to improper fuel level readouts. *tr

Filled my 2006 nissan xterra full with gas and gas gauge did not register any fuel being put into tank. after 3 miles of driving the service engine soon light came on. after 40 miles of driving fuel gauge went to full but the light is still on. i have noticed that once i get below half a tank of fuel the needle on the gauge doesn't move until i have about 1/8th of the tank left. this has been going on since 45,000 miles and currently has 60,000 miles but this last fill-up was the first to have the service engine soon light. *tr

The fuel sensor on my 2006 nissan xterra failed. so i cannot tell how much fuel i have in my vehicle. after reading several online blogs this is an issue that affects many nissan vehicles. however there is no recall because its not safety related. perhaps being a single mom getting stranded on the road because i cannot tell how much fuel i have should be a safety concern. it doesn't hurt to file a complaint i assume. *tr

Gas gauge acting irregular. shows empty even after filling up the tank. service engine light on. took the vehicle to nissan and the repair is about $450.00 for the fuel gauge sensor. for a car with about 50,000 miles, it's an unexpected and unnecessary cost. judging by the number of complaints, this item should warrant a recall. *tr

My 2006 nissan xterra's fuel sending unit has a problem, which results in (a) car does not register full tank of gas after fill-up, (b) occasional (once per 8 fill ups) service engine light comes on, which resets itself after several engine starts. this happens immediately after gas tank of filled. service at ferman nissan in tampa has given me response similar to another owner of this make/model (quoted below). since problem with fuel sending unit can result in sudden stop of engine on highway, i think it should be recalled. i experienced my first occurrence of this problem at 39,500 miles, and this is in line with what other owners report. (39k~49k mile range and after 2 yrs). i had 1/4 of a tank of gas and went to fill up. after filling up my gas tank, i turned on the car, at which point the needle did not register the full tank. after driving a couple miles, the check engine light came on. i went directly to the dealer and was told that it was a fuel sending unit/sensor and that it was no longer covered after 30k miles. after returning home and doing research, i went online to x.nissanhelp.com after performing a search, i came across many others who have experienced the same problem. apparently it has something to do with the fuel sending unit. a similar problem was found on the 2000-2004 xterra models and a recall was performed when the vehicle would stop after not getting any fuel, posing a great danger. it seems that something in the unit is faulty and will corrode over time. there is a general consensus that everyone who is having the problem is experiencing the same thing after having the vehicle for over 2 yrs and with around 39k-49k. if this problem existed in previous models, and it was recalled, the 2005-2007 xterras, frontiers, and pathfinders should get this fixed at no charge to the customer!! why wait for accidents and possible deaths, especially since the problem lies in an integral part of the vehicle. cost of repair ranges from $300-600. *tr

I purchased this xterra in may of 2006. in the past 8 weeks i have had to have my 06 nissan xterra towed to the dealer six times for the same issue of not starting. the first time i was told i was out of gas. since then, i've been told the security module had gone bad, i had corrosion on the battery terminal causing it to go in to stolen mode, the fuel pump had gone bad (replaced twice), and the wiring harness to the fuel pump had a short in it (replaced twice). the dealer says they have not been able to replicate the problem and want to give me my car back without actually finding out the real issue. this is my family vehicle and i do not do any towing or off-road with it. prior to these issues, my transmission went out at 11k miles and left me stranded on the side of an interstate for over 3 hours while i waited for a tow truck, and have had to have the fuel gauge sensor, catalytic converter, and tire pressure sensors replaced. *tr

Faulty fuel level sending unit on a 2006 nissan xtera.. fuel gauge will indicate a low fuel level, and upon filling with fuel , gauge will remain at low level. after a few miles gauge will begin to move until reaching proper level and then operate correctly until next required fill up. check engine light comes on to indicate problem and service person says sending unit needs to be replaced. this is a common problem with xteras and is not covered by warranty. it seems common enough that this faulty part is a bad design and should be recalled. *tr

I noticed last summer that when i gassed my nissan xterra up that the gas gauge would not show it being full and after visiting my local nissan dealership it was diagnosed that it was a faulty fuel sensor error code p0463 and since i had over 75,000 miles on my xterra at the time nissan would not pay to repair it and that i had the option to pay for the repair myself which is well over 300 hundred dollars . i was also told by the dealership this was a known defect for 2005 and 2006 xterra pathfinders etc. i have since found out that there was a nhtsa campaign recall on this id # 10v075000. i have since looked this up and found that this only covered xterras with certain vins and i'm not sure if my xterra is one of these vins. i also found it only covered it up to 75,000 miles which of course doesn't help me since the fuel sensor broke after 75,000 miles. this has been a very annoying problem for me for the last year and although i haven't run out of gas yet i've been close and i'm sure its only a matter of time before it will and then it will a safety issue for me.i recently contacted nissan and talked to one of their representatives [xxx] at 1-800-343-6913 ext [xxx] and was told because i have over 105,000 miles on my xterra now that nissan would not pay to have it fixed and it was my problem.i feel that this a very known defect that nissan knows about and has only halfway tried to resolve ie only covers xterras with certain vins and up to 75,000 miles which shouldn't matter.it still is a defective part that i don't consider a wear and tear part and mileage vins shouldn't matter. i think nissan should pay to have the fuel sensor fixed and mileage vins shouldn't matter they need to stand behind their products and correct their mistakes as this is a potential safety issue.i would appreciate any help in getting this issue resolved thank you information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Nissan xterra 2006, both front cats have failed. dealer said due to ethanol a common problem, cost around $2300. found cats and a mechanic for $1200. after 3 weeks check engine light returned. i am now getting a p0643. dealer passport nissan quoted around $700 to fix plus another $350 for belt replacement. none of the other recalls am eligible for due to being out of warranty. also had to replace front and rear u-joints within a year of each.

2006 nissan xterra fuel guage. the guage drops to e and sends a check engine code to the dash and doesn't read how much gas is in the xtera at any give time. i have spoken to nissan dealership and they have said it wasn't part of the national recall of other nissan fuel tank issues. this is ridiculous i am still in the 60000 mile engine warranty and it should be covered my the fuel pump 60000 mile warranty as well.

Dear sir or madam, my 2006 nissan xterra with only 46,000 miles recently showed the check engine light and ran out of gas on the highway. the fuel gauge said there was still a quarter of a tank of gas remaining. when i got to auto zone, the computer threw the code p0463, which indicates a faulty fuel gauge. i went online and discovered that lots of people have the same complaint. for this reason, i request that you add this to the list of recalled parts on this vehicle. obviously, as i experienced, it is a safety concern. the prevalence of this malfunction indicates a systemic problem rather than isolated, unrelated incidences. it will cost me $600 at the dealer to get this problem fixed. it won't save me that money, but hopefully will prevent someone's future safety issue. thank you for your consideration. ahmad khatri

I went to a gas station to fill up my 2006 nissan xterra. it said i had about a quarter of a tank left, i put in 40 dollars worth of gas and when i turned the car back on the gauge still said 1/4 of a tank. i parked the car turned it off, checked the cap and then turned it back on, it still said 1/4 of a tank and then the service engine soon light came on. i googled the problem when i got home and found hundreds of other people have had the same exact problem with the same exact circumstances on cars from nissan from the same model year. the part costs 600 dollars to replace.

My 2006 nissan xterra fuel gauge is not showing the proper amount of fuel that is going into the tank. i fill it up and the gauge stays on empty. it will not register a full tank. the service engine light remains on and will not go off.after performing a search, i came across many others who have experienced the same problem. apparently it has something to do with the fuel sending unit. a similar problem was found on the 2000-2004 xterra models and a recall was performed when the vehicle would stop after not getting any fuel, posing a great danger. it seems that somthing in the unit is faulty and will corrode over time. there is a general consensus that everyone who is having the problem is experiencing the same thing after having the vehicle for over 2 yrs and with around 39k-49k. if this problem existed in previous models, and it was recalled, the 2005-2007 xterras, frontiers, and pathfinders should get this fixed at no charge to the customer!! why wait for accidents and possible deaths, especially since the problem lies in an integral part of the vehicle. cost of repair ranges from $300-600.

Fuel level sending unit inside the fuel tank is out on my 2006 nissan xterra. this is under recall on certain model/year nissans and mine is having the same problem. not sure why mine is not included in this recall as my service enginer light has been on for three months as the cost of repair is over $600 as the entire gas tank has to be removed (had light read and problem was fuel sending unit.

We have a 2006 nissan xterra that we just bought used and the fuel sending unit is bad and there is a recall in your march 2010 for this vehicle. i ran the vin number and that particular vin number doesn't show a recall. i have contacted nissan and the had me do a diagnostic check with our local dealer and he confirms it is the fuel sending unit. the gauge just all of a sudden shows 1/4 tank which can be deceiving and dangerous if it runs out of gas. they nissan only offered to split cost of the repair but i find it hard to believe there are thousands of others of this same vehicle under recall but not mine for the very same problem. they point to the fact that the ntbs has not recalled this particular vehicle. can you help this should be covered. *tr

Fuel level sensor fails sometimes showing tank empty, 1/4 full, or reads correctly and the obdc system issues a check engine code.. this is a known and common problem with nissan vehicles. nissan has only issued a recall for cases where the sensor stops workign and does not generate a check engine code.

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). i have a 2006 nissan xterra with fuel gauge misreading problem. one day, the fuel gauge meter dropped down to empty and light came on despite i had a quarter tank of gas. ever since then i cannot tell how much gas is actually in the tank. when the gauge shows a quarter tank, it's literally empty, and when i fill up the tank, it takes hours to read full tank. i have researched articles about this problem, and found a lot of people are experiencing the exact same problem. i have called the nissan hq but they said my vin is not under the recall models, but on the website (http://www.autobuyguide.com/2006/12-aut/nissan/xterra/recalls/index.html ) it specifically lists the same issue that i'm having and are under recall models. i strongly believe this problem should be a recall for all xterra owners who are experiencing the inconvenience and are not very happy. this will be my first and last nissan i will purchase.  Fuel sending unit failed with 27,000 miles. in earlier xterra's their is a recall for this problem. nissan will not cover this under warranty and i must get it replaced because i will not be able to see how much gas i have in the tank and or the reading will be erronious. this could cause the car to run out of gas at any time.

I was driving my 06 nissan xterra on a busy highway with 1/4 tank showing on my fuel gauge. all of a sudden, the car shut down. i was barely able to get the vehicle to the breakdown lane without being struck by another vehicle. it turns out the fuel sender unit (error code po463) is defective and the vehicle had actually run out of gas. the unit will be $600 to repair, and is not covered by a warranty. my research indicates that this is a common failure for nissans of this age. the gas gauge is now entirely useless, and i must estimate my gas usage to avoid this happening again. *tr

The gas sign drops after filling up indicating e with a light on and the check engine light comes on which has stayed on ever since june 5, 2009. there are times when we would switch drivers and wouldn't know how much gas there are, that's a problem. we purchased the nissan x-terra in 2007, but it is the model year 2006. the problem does occur within two years after purchasing the vehicle. we believe there should be a recall on repairing our vehicle because it is apparent that the defect came from the manufacturing of the vehicle. we are still stuck with this problem and we shouldn't have to pay for repairs. if this problem doesn't get solved, there will be further actions. figuring that since we are loyal customers, there should be some kind of understanding. *tr
