The transmission fluid and engine coolent are mixing causing my transmission to lock in 1st gear.

I was traveling to work that morning. i live on top of a mountain so i was going down a mountain. i started to hear a grinding sound between 40-60 mph. then the vehicle began to shake. when i would slow down it began to stop. i got to work and when the technician looked at vehicle he stated the coolant had mixed with transmission fluid. i am in the car buisness so i knew that this was major damage. i called a local nissan dealer and to my surprise learned that this is a well know issue with this vehicle. i am very upset and this could have caused a major accident being on a mountain and having the transmission go out. i have taken very good care of this vehicle and am very displeased with the service. i wrote a complaint to nissan north america and the only reply i recieved wa to tell me about an open recall on the vehicle. well since the vehicle can't be driven i guess that recall will have to wait. i did replace the radiator and flushed the transmission several times in hopes that it would save the transmission but so sorry to say i still have the shutter and vibration at 40 -60 mph. the extended warranty that nissan has come up with is a laugh! most complaint i have seen the consumer has problems well after 100000 miles and why should the consumer pay anything on a defected part that caused the damage. shame on nissan!

Like hundreds of other xterra owners, our radiator line leaked coolant into our transmission and it totally destroyed the transmission, as well as the electrical component. all told, $4,000 to repair (and that was with a hefty discount from aamco). it happened on at highway speeds, and we were lucky not to end up in a wreck. in the two days it took aamco to fix our car, we spoke with two other people who had the exact same thing happen to their xterra's. i am amazed that this is such a common problem and has not been addressed in a more satisfactory manner by nissan. i hope this investigation helps drive nissan to do a recall on these parts before someone gets seriously hurt. *tr

On feb. 8th my wife and i were moving into a new place just miles away from our old home. when cruising in between 40-50 mph the vehicle was experiencing extreme vibration in the rear end of the vehicle. it was then that i assumed it might be a universal joint and/or the drive shaft. so when i had the money i brought the vehicle to aamco transmissions to have it checked out. i had to drop it off but later that afternoon the mechanic called me and told me it was the drive shaft and the frontal u-joint. he replaced the u-joint and re-balanced the drive shaft. i thought the problem was solved but just a few miles down the road i realized it hadn't. so i brought it back and they took a second look and told me it may be two things. either the torque converter is bad or the coolant hose busted and the antifreeze was draining into the transmission which would cause the transmission to blow out. they then told me to fix the transmission would cost me around $6,000 which to me is worth more than the actual vehicle. when i got home i did a little research and found that sure enough the antifreeze was leaking into the transmission. the antifreeze looks like a green apple milkshake if you can imagine. i don't know what to do because i know that there are no recalls for this issue nor warranty coverage. hundreds of people have complained about this exact issue. i'm at a loss, and now there's absolutely nothing i can do with my only transportation.

Told the timing chain tensioner plastic part failed; only indication is a whine sound from the engine. nissan issued a tsb to their dealers about this issue, but nothing to the consumer. if the timing chain fails it will cause a catastrophic failure of the engine and a possible crash. an unknowing consumer has no idea about what this sound means (just sounds like a noisy engine) and might have little warning prior to a timing chain failure. this is a common issue on the type of engine in the xterra, it affects other model also, and at a very low mileage 50-60k mi. consumers need to be notified of this defect and to listen for the noise. not everyone takes their vehicle to the dealer. most mechanics know that timing chains are supposed to last well over 100,000 - 200,000 miles and would never suspect the defect. a safety recall or at least a notification to consumers would be advisable. *tr

Due to a cracked radiator, coolant leaked into the transmission system causing the transmission to fail. luckily, was able to take vehicle out of service before more damage could occur, as a result the firth gear was deemed inoperative. the cracked radiator was replaced, and a new transmission will have to be installed. the vehicle is drivable, but gas mileage has significantly been reduced because of the loss of the fifth gear. i talked to numerous repair and transmission specialist, and this is a very common problem. researching on the nhtsa website a active investigation was found under nhtsa action number # dp12004. *tr

Transmission failure. the transmission radiator failed causing coolant to leak into the transmission which destroyed the transmission. i spoke to the nissan dealership and they acknowledged that this has been an issue with the xterras. nissan does have a program to rebate some of the repair ($4,500 dollars). this program has a cutoff at 100k miles. my vehicle has 119k miles. nissan will not do anything to help with the cost of repair although they have acknowledged that is a problem. nissan does not have to worry about having me as a customer in the future!

I was driving 35 mph on a busy street when my vehicle would not accelerate. i towed my car to nissan dealer and was told my trans was no good and it would cost 6,000 to 10,000 to fix. i contacted nissans consumer affairs and they said i did not qualify for any warranties. nissan told me there was no radiator fluid in my transmission which seems to be a common complaint. i towed my car for a second opinion and was told my trans does have radiator fluid in it and it also flooded my computer in the trans. why did nissan lie to me? i found that nissan did extend the warranty on the radiators and that an e-mail did go out to nissan owners stating they would also cover the trans if caused by radiator leakage to 80,000 miles but nissan told me i don't qualify because i am a second owner? still waiting on a response from nissan. this has caused a great hardship on me.

Was driving my vehicle on the freeway and all of a sudden the vehicle began to lose speed. pulled off the freeway and the car would just roll. upon acceralting the vehicle the engine would just rev. took car to transmission shop and the mechanic advised me that the entire transmission was ruined due to radiator coolant being leaked into the transmission. prior to this i had the radiator inspected on several occasions in the last couple of years since the extended warranty had been placed on the vehicle and i had already surpassed the mileage of the warranty. the radiator showed no signs of wear and tear. *tr

The vehicle has a whining noise. when taken to the dealership, it was diagnosed as a worn down tensioner for the timing chain. if neglected it could cause engine damage and malfunction. the dealer claims the repair includes removing the tensioner and replacing with an upgraded part as they know the original part is faulty. nissan is aware of the issue and issued a service bulletin in 2009 ntb07-042a, but refuses to fix this part in their vehicles. this should be recalled! *tr

Transmission failure due to issue with radiator defect. radiator fluid leaked into transmission eventually caused catastrophic damage to transmission parts. power train failure occurred while on the freeway almost 30 miles from home. my personal safety was definitely in peril and only due to skill and luck was an accident averted.

On june 7, 2012, nissan told me that my radiator failed causing my transmission to fail. i have 3 children ages 7 weeks to 5 yrs and count my self lucky that the problem was diagnosed before a potentially life threatening transmission failure on busy los angeles county streets or freeways. i was later appalled to find out that nissan knew of the issue, but covered it up as evidenced in a ny times article dated 8/24/2011. the service advisor at the dealer informed me that my car situation was an issue that he had seen before. i am now being told that it will cost me $4000 for my car to be repaired due to a known defective radiator that would have cost a fraction of that to replace. i am still without a car after 11 days.

My 21 year old daughter was driving our xterra in ellensburg, washington 260 miles in the desert when the car transmission stopped working! brought it for two reliable estimates and like all the others this is a cause from a defect in the radiator that obviously nissan has known about for quite a long time. do they need more bad press? i will be putting it on craigslist and any place else i can to include the back window of the truck. my daughter was stranded!!!! in the middle of a desert with no cell phone reception. does nissan want the liability of this? it's theres because they knew about the faulty power train and did nothing. i have added my name and filed a class action law suit against nissan for this problem that they fail to recognize. i don't get it at all. it's the error of nissan and they need to take responsibility for their mess!

My wife and i were driving on the freeway on may 13,2012 going for a short ride when all of a sudden the car transmisson stopped working.we were barely able to coast over the shoulder of the road.i had to have the xterra towed to my house being it was on a sunday. being on a california freeway on sunday evening and also mother's day is no fun.i felt the danger of the cars whizzing by.an interesting note on this subject is that the same thing happened to my son.he has a 2006 nissan pathfinder.his transmission went out because of water leaking into the transmission. the dealership repiaced his transmission and radiator at no charge to him.i figured this is what happened to my car.the next day i had it towed to the dealership where i bought the xterra.i told them the problem and im sure they know about this problem of water leaking into the transmission.i argued with them about fixing for no charge and they said they would send the paper work to nissan north america if that was the problem.he said it was on a case by case basis. i am waiting to see if nissan will approve it.if not my wife who paid for this car on her own who just finished paying for it last year will have to find 5 to 6 thousand dollars to fix a flaw in transmission line that should be a recall because that is a defective part that has happened to lots of nissan vehicles

Driving approx. 30 mph when the car stopped responding. i got it looked at, and it was determined that the transmission failed due to a failed transmisson cooler which caused water from the radiator to back up into the transmission.

I was driving thru a intersection and my xterra lost the ability to go due to a faulty radiator assembly causing failure to the transmission the issue started at around 92,000 miles and nissan will not do a thing to fix it saying i am out of the extended coverage! well this is a a huge safety issue had it been a night me and my wife could have not been seen and had a very serious accident!

My 2006 nissan xterra (purchased new in feb 2007) began occasional shuddering, as if driving over rumble strips, while driving at about 131,000 miles. if i let off the gas or accelerated, it would stop, but no constant trigger. this increased over a couple weeks so i decided to research online and found many users with the same issue. i took it to a mechanic and they couldn't get it to replicate. i left there and drove to trophy nissan in mesquite and they wouldn't look at it for another 1.5 days and only after i payed them an $85 diagnostic fee (to look at something that is there fault!) i decided to be proactive and replace the radiator and hoses, hoping to catch it early enough. i took it to a mechanic 2 days later. they said the rumbling was from a torque converter lock-up and we could do a flush but that may not fix it. so, we flushed it with 12 qts new nissan transmission oil. the problem seemed to stay the same over the next couple weeks and then the transmissioin went out on my way home from work. so, now we get to replace the transmission. i called a transmission shop, (at this point i don't trust nissan or anything they say - since they can't even admit fault on this!) and they said this transmission is an expensive transmission (with it's computer etc.) so just to rebuild it is going to run $2500. nissan wants $4400+ just for a new part. this is ridiculous. this was very dangerous as mine completely went out when i was in the middle of an intersection. i am so disgusted at nissan and their lack of morals / values. if they would just do the right thing and fix the issue that is their own fault, then i think everyone would feel completely different. they need to stand behind the product they sell. as of right now, i will never buy a nissan again. why is there not a defect investigation with as many people that are having these issues?

I purchased this xterra in may of 2006. in the past 8 weeks i have had to have my 06 nissan xterra towed to the dealer six times for the same issue of not starting. the first time i was told i was out of gas. since then, i've been told the security module had gone bad, i had corrosion on the battery terminal causing it to go in to stolen mode, the fuel pump had gone bad (replaced twice), and the wiring harness to the fuel pump had a short in it (replaced twice). the dealer says they have not been able to replicate the problem and want to give me my car back without actually finding out the real issue. this is my family vehicle and i do not do any towing or off-road with it. prior to these issues, my transmission went out at 11k miles and left me stranded on the side of an interstate for over 3 hours while i waited for a tow truck, and have had to have the fuel gauge sensor, catalytic converter, and tire pressure sensors replaced. *tr

I own an 06 xterra with a six speed manual transmission when the vehicle had 24000 km i was driving on the highway when i pulled out to pass a transport the clutch failed resulting in no throttle and i almost got crushed by the transport i had just passed. i had the vehicle towed to the nearest dealership where i was told the clutch had shattered in eight pieces and that it was my fault cause i must tow alot. i don't even have a tow hitch. then i was told it was because i do a lot of 4x4 offroad driving. its been offroad once. they did not want to warranty the part i argued with them. they changed their story yet again now the clutch was worn out not shattered. so i asked for my worn out clutch they had told me it had been thrown in the garbage. four days later they miraculously found it. it cost me $2,000 dollars to fix my truck and guess what its happened again at 49,000 km coincidence i think not. its time to fight nissan because u don't buy a new vehicle to put $2000 of your own money into it every 13 months and almost die in the process. *tr

I am the owner of a nissan xterra i purchased back in feb 2006. i was happy to make my last finance payment in february. last week while driving home from work my car's check engine light turned on then started to overheat. later i found out my car was leaking a white substance which was difficult to get off my driveway. i was surprised since i regularly keep up with the maint and never had any problems in the past. i had my car towed to peruzzi nissan in langhorne pa to find out what was wrong. the dealer informed me that the car had a leak and the coolant and transmission fluid began to mix to create the white substance which ruined my transmission. after doing some research online, i was disappointed to find out this was a common issue with the xterras and that nissan made a design change to fix it in later xterra models. peruzzi told me that i needed to replace my transmission, radiator, upper/lower radiator hose. their initial estimate to fix my car was $8500. after i heard the number, i priced each of the parts out online for approx $1500. peruzzi provided a new estimate for $5,500. because this was a known issue, i would have thought nissan would have done the right thing to fix it as part of a recall. when a person buys a car there is an expectation the car will last more than 5 years. it is unacceptable the extended warranty once you exceed 85,000 miles is no longer valid. because of the experience with the dealer and the quality of cars you provide, i will never purchase a nissan again. in addition, i am planning to share my nissan experience with online forums and friends about the quality of service nissan does not provide or stand by their products. if you have any questions please feel free to contact me. my number is 215-431-9224. ex-nissan owner - eric jaffe

I have a 2006 nissan xterra and driving my car in started driving like in neutral so i had my car towed and the shop told me there was a crack in the radiator hose that caused fluid to go into transmission and ruined it. i had my car towed to a nissan dealer and they said yes they knew about this and had issued an extended warranty to 80,000 miles my car has 100,000 miles on it so it wouldnt be covered. i felt since they clearly had a design flaw in the radiator hose connection that could cause the transmission to give out and be dangerous it should have been a recall issue. it shouldnt matter how many miles you have on the car it was a defective design by nissan and should have been corrected. all you have to do is search on the internet and you will fill many many pages of complaints about this issue. i find it hard to believe that a car company could be aware of a design flaw that is more likely to occur than not but not stand behind the vehicle and take care of it regardless the miles. it is over $5,000 to fix and it is wrong for nissan not to have recalled this. why when it is repaired does the new radiator have a different hose connection?? because they know it was a deffective design first time around. just wrong, i will never buy anther nissan again.

I purchased my vehicle brand new in 2007 and have had it regularly maintained since this time. i was driving down the highway at about 60 mph, when the vehicle began to shake violently. i was in fairly heavy traffic and had difficulty maintaining control of the vehicle as i struggled to pull it to the side of the road. i had it towed into my local dealership who informed me that the radiator had cracked and coolant had worked it's way into the transmission. i am being told that i need to replace the radiator and transmission which will cost me $5500 in parts and labor. in addition to this, transmissions for this vehicle are on backorder and i must wait even longer for the repairs. of course, i have 95,000 miles on the vehicle and that means i am outside of the warranty coverage. my biggest complaint is that this problem is likely a manufacturer defect and seriously puts owners at risk of injury or even death. i wish nissan would be more accommodating in reimbursing the repairs and warning owners about this problem in the future.

I have a 2006 nissan xterra and noticed it was driving rough off and on. i took it into the dealership as there was a recall on the ecm relay and asked them to check the rough driving. i was called and advised that my radiator broke which caused fluid to leak into my transmission and would need to replace both. i was quoted $9200.00 which is unacceptable. i use my truck strictly for communting, dont even use 4wd. the truck isnt even paid off yet. there is no recall on this, yet as i do research i have found that this is a common problem, yet nissan is doing nothing about it. i called aamco and was advised it would cost $2800-3200 for them to fix and that they see this with nissans way too frequently. my personal mechanice advised he can fix it for around that same price as well. i depend on this vehicle for getting to work and safely getting my children to school. what a let down for such an expensive purchase.

My 2006 nissan xterra started shaking violently while driving at 40mph all of a sudden, to the point i thought i hit something or was dragging a branch, i stop to find nothing and kept on driving, and the cart did it again, so scared of going any faster and loosing control. i took it to the dealership and they informed me that due to a design flaw cracked radiators are causing coolant to leak into the transmission and mix with the transmission fluid. once the coolant (antifreeze) is in the transmission it kills the valves, seals and torque converter and eventually renders the entire transmission useless. it seems to be a common occurrence on '05-'06 xterra. but i was never informed nor other xterra owners. to correct this i have to replace the radiator & transmission at an outrageous price. although nissan hasn't conducted a recall or acknowledger theres a problem, they did extend the power train warranty from 60k to 80k. my vehicle has 94k miles, so i'm hoping my extended warranty covers it. this is very dangerous, imagine driving at 60mph and loosing control due to strong shaking. i just cant believe with the overwhelming amount of people complaining they haven't started a recall.

My 2006 nissan xterra started shaking when driving at around 60mph. it would do this for 3-5 seconds as i sped up or slowed down. i was told by the nissan dealership that there was a leak between my radiator and transmission. i was also told that both needed to be replaced. my vehicle is at 91,000 miles and even though i purchased the extended warranty to 100,000 miles, i was told it would not be cover unless i provided paperwork showing i flushed the radiator at 30,000 and 60,000 miles. i was able to provide the paperwork and they still have not agreed to cover it under the warranty.

A common problem with nissan pathfinder/xterra/frontiers equipped with automatic transmissions, is the radiator failing and leaking coolant into the transmission via a portion of the transmission system that passes through the radiator. this problem is most common with 2005 to 2008 model nissans. the first sign of this failure is a slight vibration at 40-50 mph when the vehicle shifts from 4th to overdrive (5th) gear. at this point the damage, apparently, has been done. in worst case situations the vehicles can fall into safe mode causing the vehicle's operator to lose control due to undesired transmission operation. by visiting many nissan owner forums and internet search engines, this is a wide spread problem for nissan owners. it has been my personal experience that nissan has made no offer of assistance for most customers with this problem. i feel that this problem is widespread and dangerous and is a design flaw by nissan and/or its parts vendors and should be corrected at no cost to vehicle owners. nissan should replace radiators on all models effected and should replace transmissions in any vehicles that have had this failure.

I bought a new nissan xterra from sloane nissan in 2006, after 70+ miles, the car vibrates at around 40mph while shifting automatic gear (i did not know why it was vibrating). finally aft 80+ miles, i took it to the dealer to only find out that the radiator blew the transmission. that is a shame, i just finished paying for the car and now i have to spend more money to fix it. it seems to be a very common problem with nissan xterra, pathfinder & frontier. the radiator is junk and needs to be recalled.

Vehicle slowed down on the freeway, took almost full power to maintain 20 mph speed.burning smell in cabin accompanied the loss of power. vehicle towed to original dealer. after a day, he stated it was the manual clutch assembly. vehicle has 27661 original miles, this is the second manual transmission/clutch failure since i bought the vehicle new in 2007. first failure occurred after only 7954 miles. first time, the dealer said he didn't have to cover repair under warranty ( wear parts), but did it anyway because they believed there were no driver issues, ie., part failure, not driver mis-use. as an aside, my wife and i have been driving manual transmission vehicles for 40 years apiece, and never had this problem. this time, two months out of warranty, dealer claimed nissan would not cover the repair. $2100 later, i drove off the lot with a clutch pedal very much softer than when it was new. i test drove it with the repairing mechanic, he said he had adjusted the pedal play to factory spec, and the clutches should last 60-70000 miles (seems low to me-manual transmissions are usually bullet-proof with other manufactures ). mechanic replaced flywheel, clutch disc, cover assenbly, bearing release and first shaft bushing. awaiting response to appeal for cost coverage from nissan. multiple clutch failures reported on the internet ( edmunds.com, facebook ) for same year/make. believe a poor design/parts manufacturer is the cause of these failures, nissan needs to recall and repair these vehicles.
