My turn signals and hazards don't work at times. they go out randomly while i'm driving and it is very dangerous. i tried to turn the hazards on to get them to work but the hazards out most of the time also. it has been happening at least 3-4 times a week and makes me nervous to drive for fear of an accident or ticket. i have contacted gm dealers and they said there is no recall for the 2002 model but i have read there are recalls for the 2000 and 2001 models. i have heard of numerous complaints for the 2002 models and would hope something will be done about it. *tr

Hazard and turn signals intermittently fail; same as the 2001...there was a recall for this issued on the 2001, but not the 2002? i lose my turn signals approximately 2-3 times per 10 mile trip. i have not been involved in an accident due to this malfunction...yet. no repairs seem to fix the problem. the incident date is the last time this problem occurred (i haven't driven the car for a few days), but it has actually been going on for over 2 years. apparently this is a common problem with the alero's reguardless of the model year. the vehicle also won't start when it rains, and shuts down while driving. the trunk opens by itself, and the door locks don't always work. sometimes the stereo won't turn on, and most recently the driver's door window won't open. i replaced the wheel house assembly 3 times in two years. this car is an electrical nightmare! frequently it won't start because it thinks i'm trying to steal it. i also put air in all my tires at least once a week because they won't hold air...apparently there is a problem with the wheels. i have to manually check the tires because the warning light for low tire pressure is also an electrical malfunction. *tr

I have a 2002 oldsmobile alero that was not included in the hazard switch recall notice (applies to 1999 and 2001 vehicles and other gm cars) since spring of 2009 my car has been exhibiting the same problems as discussed in the recall. it has been getting worse since then. i feel that some of the bad switches made it into other years or the car was still built with 2001 parts. i purchased it from an olds dealer in summer of 2002. it was a gm program used car on the road since january 2002. *tr

Blinker is very intermittent and dangerous. sometimes it works, other times nothing. when it is not working the hazard or blinker sound seems to be going off and on constantly. the repair shop said that they would have to tear apart the whole dash just to troubleshoot the problem. this is a very scary problem and can potentially lead to tickets or accidents if not fixed. *tr

I bought my 2002 olds alero in may of 2006 and have had problems ever since. i had to have the front left wheel bearing replaced 2 days after i bought the car. the dealership paid for the parts and labor that time, but i was on my own from there. frequently i was having the problem of the engine turning over, but not starting. i had to call a tow truck 6 times in 2 months. the fuel pump was replaced and a week later i had the same problem. this time it the body module was replaced. 2 days later i was calling the tow truck again. the ignition switch was replaced this time. the next time i threatened to sue the mechanic who had worked on my car. this time the car started right up for the mechanic. he contacted gm to see what the problem could possibly be and of course they had never heard of this problem. after the car was towed to the shop a few more times the mechanic finally got a hold of another mechanic who specialized in gm repairs. that mechanic told him about the faulty security system. he passed on the info to me. if the car won't start, turn the key on for 10 min. until the security light stops flashing, turn the key off, take it out of the ignition and try it again. this has worked every time for me, but really, who has the extra 10-15 minutes to spare every time they need to go somewhere, just in case their car won't start? i also have problems with the turning signals working only when they want to. this seems to be a common problem among alero owners. after the nightmares i've had with this car and the disrespect shown by gm to their valued customers, i will never buy another gm model as long as i live! buyer beware!!! *tr

There was no accident, but there might be due to the fact that my wife's 2002 oldsmobile alero hazard switch is faulty causing intermittent turning signal failure, the same problem with previous models of the alero. i called oldsmobile and they will not replace the hazard switch under recall which apparently they told me my vin isn't included, even though it's the same exact issue and problem. i thought i would notify you of the problem that seems was not corrected when the recalls were issued for previous years. the recall should cover any alero that experiences this issue, not just certain vin numbers. *tr

2002 oldsmobile alero, turn signals are not working properly, sometimes they just quit working. is there a recall for this problem as i see there many complaints with the flasher unit or hazard component. when i called the dealer i was told i could bring in the car and it would cost me $100.00 to see what the problem is plus be charged to fix the problem or i could take it somewhere else. there is a defective part that needs to be replaced as this is a safety issue and the consumer should not be charged to have the problem corrected. *tr

Turn signals / hazard lights fail to work on occasion. problem started occurring this summer about 2-3 weeks after having some brake work performed. problem is thought by me to be a separate issue with a failure of a solenoid. there have been no consequences as a result of the failure. i am able to get the light working again, by either repeated quick pushes of the hazard lights or a quick pound just left of the hazard switch. i am planning on bringing this issue up at the next scheduled oil change in a couple of weeks unless the lights fail altogether. *nm

Dt: the contact owns a 2002 oldsmobile alero. the hazard and turn signal flashers work intermittently and sometimes are inoperative. the contact saw other complaints on the nhtsa website for this problem. the consumer contacted gm and they said they were unwilling to help with the repair because this vehicle was not included in nhtsa recall 03v327000 due to vin. the contact has been having this problem with lights for twelve months. the contact moved from a warm weather climate to a four season climate, and that was when he began to have this problem. it went away up until the weather began to change. *ak *nm

2002 oldsmobile alero. at 57,000 miles turn signals are occasionally inoperative. fuses were changed and they still fail on occasion. identical problems resulted in the recalls of the 2000 and 2001 olds aleros. upon reviewing internet web sites i discovered that there are many other alero owners whom are having the same problem. a temporary solution until the hazard switch can be replaced is to slap the dashboard near the hazard switch to make it operable. the inability to alert other drivers of the intent to change lanes, or make turns is a safety issue. *jb

I have a 2002 olds alero gls. the 2001 olds alero has this recall: hazard warning switches that may experience solder joint cracking caused by rapid temperature transitions and the soldering process. if solder joint cracking occurs and results in an open circuit, the turn signals/hazard lamps become intermittent or inoperative. my car has the exact same problem but is not included in the recall. gm was the wost help ever. they hung up on me. in the past two weeks they have quit working more times than i can reamber. i have also have a problem with my gage cluster. about 2-3 times a month it dosent opperate. no check engine lights ect or spedo rpm ect work there just dead until u restart the car. the olds bravada has a recall for it. what i dont understan is how an 01 alero have recalls and a 03 have recalls but not an 02. i was on the interstate when my turn signals quit. i dont know how long they were out before i they werent working. i did have a frind of mine look at the car who is a certified gm tech and said it was a losse wire up in the dash.
05/15/20051150002009/01/2002
Basically i own a oldsmobile 2000 intrigue and an 2002 alero. my wifes intrique hazard switch caused the turn signals to fail ramdomly. i took it in during warranty and they could not reproduce the failure. after warranty we took the car to the dealership for a state inspection and they told us that the hazard switch is defective and needs to be replaced to pass inspection. so i paid the $18 since this is a critical safety issue. now my 2002 alero is doing exactly the same thing. when i go to use my turn signals they dont work but if i push on the hazard switch in/out or wiggle it they start working. i believe gm had a recall on the hazard switch back around 1998?? i believe this is a serious safty issue. obcviously driving down the road and preparing to initiate a turn and your signals dont work can easily cause a collision. i am in my mid 40's and have had many cars, so have my parents from the 1960's and never have i seen a hazard switch fail. i have seen bulbs fail that will cause the turn signals to not flash but i cannot believe that gm had a recall in the late 1990's and i have two different cars have the exact same failure. i am going to go and by another switch but because it involves a critical saftey feature i felt compelled to let you know what i have seen. i believe you can check the failure rate by requiring gm to produce their sales database on sales of hazard switches from the 1990's to 2005 since this item is not usually reproduced or sold by 3rd parties.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING - TAIL LIGHTS - SWITCH
10/01/200337500807/15/2002
When my 2002 alero turned 37,500 the fuse to the tail and dash lights blew leaving me driving after dark with no tail and dash lights. *ak so far the mechanics have not been able to trace down the short in the electrical system in order to fix the problem. they keep putting in new fuses and they just keep blowing. they have ordered a switch, and it is to go back into the shop again to have the switch replaced again, and to try once more to track down the electrical short that is causing the fuse to blow that takes out the tail and dash lights. i can't drive this 2002 alero after dark even if i have just put in a new fuse because it will just blow again. if it doesn't blow while i am driving it, it will just be blown the next time i start it. it makes driving this 2002 alero very unsafe to drive, especially after dark.

05/01/20031
I have had my 2002 oldsmobile alero since 2002. within six months of having this car the ignition switch went bad and was unable to start the car and it had to be repaired. this was repaired by the dealer that i purchased it from because the company that was in charge of my extended warranty went bankrupt. since then i have had to pay to replace a gasket in the engine that keeps engine coolant and engine oil from mixing together because the gasket that was manufactured with the car was not the right thickness. (since this is a known defect by mechanics why wasn't this recalled or a service bulletin initiated?) i continue to have problems with the driver door control panel that controls the windows and the side mirrors and window locks. the windows in my car can only be controlled by the driver because the window lock is stuck in the on position. i have also had problems with the windows falling down into the door and have had one window replaced in december 2007 but now in september 2008 the passenger window is experiencing the same symptoms and now will have to replace this window as well. right now the most annoying thing about this car is the turn signals. they function as they should but the clicking noise for the turn signal will not turn off when i have made a turn (it actually makes a clicking noise about 3 times as fast as the regular turn click). i have had this looked at by a mechanic and i was told that this was not part of the hazard light recall which my car falls under so it was not fixed. it is a very distracting problem and the only time i can get relief from the clicking noise is when i actually get ready to make a turn by turning on the actual turn signal. there are a number of problems that numerous owners are experiencing. i am hoping that some thing is done about the windows and the engine gasket. i don't think consumers should be responsible for poor engineering and design. gm should make things right. *tr

We have been having trouble with our turn signals going out sporadically. we never know when they are going to not work. this is very dangerous but we were told tat only certain vin#s had this recall. however this is happening to too many people who are having to pay out of pocket for this repair, it is ridiculous. we also like many others have had the problem with not being able to start our vehicles because of the ignition. we had to pay $700 to get it rekeyed, and we have a passenger window that has fell into the door, which still is not fixed. we should all be given the opportunity to get the signals fixed under recall not just some when its the same problem. *tr

I'm not for sure if your interested in this type of complaint, but i received a letter from oldsmobile pertaining to my 2002 olds. alero that there was a possible problem with the turning signal and/or hazards. this letter came from their recall center but it stated in the letter it wasn't a recall. well a couple of months previously my turning signal would stop working while i was driving then it would work, stop working, work but never for too long of time. sometimes it would be fine for weeks then it would start up again. well, after i received this letter i was for sure that this letter probably pertained to my problem and made an appointment with the olds. dealer in vincennes, in. when i went to pick it up, they said the turn signal never quit working, which i replied its going to be a one in a million chance that it will do it for you. i would have to leave my car there for a month for it to occur for them to catch it, i just thought this problem was what the letter was referring to. he stated if he fixed everything that could possible be wrong with the turn signal i would have a repair bill as long as his arm. my concern is i feel like i could be in a serious accident if the turn signal quits working again or getting a ticket for not using it when it actually failed. i'm kind of at a loss of what i actually can do. i know this might not be the problem they are referring to because they really didn't explain in the letter it just said contact your olds dealer, which they were of no help. i asked him if he was aware of the letter sent out and he said kind of. any help you can give me would be appreciated. *jb

Turn signal lights flicker but fail to come on in back of vehicle, or they just don't work at all. this is an intermittent problem. i may start out driving and they are fine, then they completely stop working, and by the end of the trip they work again. sometimes they work the whole trip, sometimes none at all. there is no rhyme or reason to it. i replaced the fuse for the signal lights and this did not remedy the problem. this has been an ongoing problem for the past few months. *nm

The turn signal is flashing in and out of use. sometimes it works when you turn the signal on, and other times it does not work. sometimes it stops working after it has started working, and it goes out before the turn is completed. there has been no crash yet, but i do not feel safe when making a turn and the signal stops working. i have not had the vehicle serviced at this time, because i thought a recall had been issued and i was waiting on the letter from the manufacturer. *nm

I discovered my turn signals weren't working while driving recently. since then i've discovered that the problem is intermittent; sometimes they work with no problems, sometimes not. generally i can monkey with the hazard light button after i've turned the car on but before i start driving to ensure that they're in working condition. but it's no guarantee they'll be working at the end of the trip. while researching this problem online i see that a number of people are experiencing it and that the nhtsa is investigating. i plan on having it repaired as soon as i get a chance, but it'd be nice if there was a recall outstanding already. *nm

*jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 oldsmobile alero. the contact was driving approximately between 45-50 mph merging into another lane when she noticed that the turn signal failed to function. the failure occurred intermittently with both turn signal indicators. there were several occasions when the turn signal indicator functioned whenever engaging the hazard warning lights. the headlights, tail lights and turn signal bulbs were replaced; however, the failure continued. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for inspection where the technician tested the complete signal indicator system fuse and informed the contact that it was not the cause of failure. the vehicle has not been repaired at this time. the failure and current mileages were 100,000.

Turn signals intermittently quit working, but hazards work fine. also, intermittently when you turn the steering wheel fully (either way) the abs light and low traction off light come on which clear after turning the ignition off and restarting, but does it again or maybe not for a while. *nm

In my 2002 oldsmobile alero, my turn signals become very intermittent and sometimes fail to function all together causing me to pull to the side of the road and restart my vehicle to get the turn signals working again. sometimes i need to hold in the button for the hazard flasher button while pushing my turn signal down in order to get them to work for a short time. i have seen that the 2001 alero has been recalled for a similar problem the recall number is 03v327000. *nm

The turn signal / hazard switch went out on my 2002 oldsmobile alero. this caused the turn signals not to operate and nearly caused me to be rear ended on a highly traveled road with a child in the car. the failure was corrected by having the part replaced. the old part is no longer available due to shop throwing it out. *jb

Dt: 2002 oldsmobile alero. the consumer stated the hazard warning light worked intermittently. the switch also controls the turn signals, and this does not always work. the hazard warning light pushed through the dashboard. the vehicle has not been taken to the dealership, but oldsmobile told them it was not under recall. the problem started last year, and it was fixed at that time. the switch was replaced, not at a dealership.*ak
