Defect SummarySome sport utility vehicles equipped with an electronically controlled air suspension (ecas) have a condition in which the ecas may produce a brief electrical spike while the vehicle is operating. this electrical spike can disrupt the powertrain control module (pcm) causing the vehicle to stall.
Consequence SummaryIf the spike damages the pcm, the vehicle may not restart. if this happens while the vehicle is moving, a crash could occur without prior warning.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install a wiring harness. the recall will begin on august 19, 2004. owners should contact oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537 or gmc at 1-866-996-9463.

Model year (my) 2002 bravada and certain my 2002 envoy vehicles with optional electronically controlled air suspension (ecas) may be subject to engine stall caused by an errant voltage spike transmitted to the powertrain control module (pcm).in addition to engine stall, if the spike damages the pcm, the vehicle may not restart.on october 31, 2001 gm introduced into production a wiring harness containing an inductor that was added to the ecas wiring to reduce the magnitude of the voltage spike.on december 6, 2001 gm introduced into production a modified pcm with protection from errant voltage spikes and also ceased use of the wiring harness with the inductor.the office of defects investigation's (odi) analysis verified that vehicles built on or before october 31, 2001, had the highest rate of engine stalling.odi is aware of 1,132 complaints and field reports on the 37,746 subject vehicles built prior to october 31, 2001 (2,999 reports/100,000 vehicles). there is one crash and one injury resulting from a stalling incident.gm reported 7,859 warranty claims with build dates before october 31, 2001 (20,820 claims/100,000 vehicles).by way of letter dated june 4, 2004, gm notified odi that it had determined that the subject vehicles built on or before october 31, 2001 contained a safety-related defect and that gm will be conducting a safety recall of those vehicles.gm will recall 18,455 my 2002 oldsmobile bravada's and 11,496 my 2002 gmc envoy's (total: 29,951).the recall is identified by nhtsa number 04v-289.not included in this recall are subject vehicles built after october 31, 2001, and subject vehicles built on or before october 31, 2001 that were serviced with the jumper cable or the revised pcm.given that the vehicles outside the recall have remedied, either in production or in service, for the stalling condition, odi has concluded that further expenditure of agency resources in pursuing a safety recall of those vehicles is not warranted.this conclusion does not constitute a finding that no safety-related defect exists in those vehicles.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.
PE03001GENERAL MOTORS CORP.01/03/200305/06/2003ENGINE STALL
Of the 697 total complaints, 240 were received for theenvoy and 457 for the bravada.gm has identified about 5,000 warranty claims related to stalling in the subject vehicles.gm reports that a transient voltage spike generated in the ecas degrades the performance of the pcm resulting in engine stall.gm modified the ecas wiring bundle and the pcm for vehicles built after december 6, 2001 to address the stalling problem.

The car shuts off suddenly and all of the gauges light up. the car must be restarted, sometimes multiple times. this presents a danger as the car may suddenly lose mobility on a highway. it seems that this may be related to multiple postings on the internet that claim this symptom is caused by a voltage spike to the computer generated by the air shocks. this car was built september 1,2001 and was supposedly included in a recall but the dealer claims that there is no recall on this car and if it was repaired under the recall, once the repair is done it is impossible to find it on the gm computers and the recall would then not be in effect for this vehicle. if it was repaired and the problem still exists, these vehicles should be removed from the road.

Dt*: the contact stated while the vehicle was at the car wash in 2003 there was a water leak on the passenger side. the right power window would not rollup or down and this occurred intermittently. the dealership could not duplicate the problem. two-three weeks ago while trying to get the window to roll down, the engine died suddenly without warning. this was the third time the engine died suddenly. the first was while driving 60 mph on a dry highway. the vehicle was towed to the dealership who could not duplicate the problem. the second time, the vehicle restarted after sitting a short while on the side of the road. the cvcs boots on the front wheels blew and were replaced twice. the headlights were replaced three times.

I have had my 2002 bravada in the shop numerous times for the locking of my awd. the fluid was changed in the transfer case (no help), the module was replaced (no help) and now the whole transfer case is being replaced. the cost is between 1500 and 2000! the vehicle has 80k miles. this is a very serious issue (and it appears that gm is aware of problems-based on tsb's online) especially in northern climates with snow. the control of the vehicle, when turning is lost, as the particular wheel locks up. i also had my fan clutch break, separate from awd problem. *jb

I have a 2002 gmc safari van. the heater core is located in the front of the passenger compartment. it is covered by an uninsulated plastic cover, which when the heater is on gets extremely hot. my wife accidently touched it with her leg and burned herself. i have been having the car serviced by a chevrolet dealership which is more convenient to me. they claimed it was working correctly. i took it, at there request to a gmc dealership, at my own expense in albany, ny and they claimed it was designed that way and they could do nothing about it. gmc refuses to do anything about it, claiming it was working properly and that was the design. this is definitely a design flaw which is easily correctable. gmc case # 1-343963559

It's the same as the rest of the complaints. while driving car at any speed just completely stops for no reason and without any warning. i bought this nice 2002 olds bravada for my wife and now she & the kids have been stuck in the middle of traffic on major intersections 4x4's needing to be towed into the dealership. dealership acts like they want to help and trys to fix problem put new computer in. each time this happens several months go by and then all of the sudden it happens again. stalled out at a major intersection without warning with two kids in the car and my wife in a panic for her life and for the kids. there have been tons of complaints some say it's the motor but gm isn't doing anything just extending the warranty on the suvs. when this happens and somebody dies from it i guess then gm will stand up and have to do something. i don't want this to be my wife and kids. this is a lemon. these cars should not be on the road not only are they a danger to my family but to anybody else out there on the road that is behind or in front of these cars. peoples lives are at risk here and it's not to be taken lightly. what kind of law suits is gm wanting to get involved in before they make this right? these cars are a ticking time bomb just waiting to happen at anytime anywhere without warning. i need answers and a quick fix now not when somebody dies! i traded our jeep in for this newer bravada so my wife and kids would be safe in a nice new suv. ends up they are not safe at all in this suv their lives are in danger everyday because they are having to ride in that suv everyday. think about your loved ones riding around in this bravada how would you feel... would they be in it or in some other suv? but what is our option we are stuck paying for this suv that is a lemon and ticking time bomb. that may kill my family and a lot of other peoples families. we need to get this issues resolved asap peoples lives are on the line here. this is not a joke. *la

Consumer has had multiple, reoccuring problems with new vehicle since first purchased in october 2001. car has been returned to dealer more than 12 times in 18 months and has placed significant burden on the owner. vehicle now has new major mechanical problems with both the engine and transmission. although the vehicle is still under warranty, the large number of persistent problems classifies this vehicle as unreliable and, more importantly, unsafe. owner has contacted dealer regarding a replacement vehicle (lemon law), however the dealership has directed the owner to the maker company (gm/oldsmobile). the maker has responded by insisting that the warranty was designed for such problems and they have referred the owner back to the dealer for continual repairs. in other words, neither the maker nor their representative dealer is willing to assist the owner in resolving the situation. the dealership has since closed due to owner retirement, as well. more than five complaints have been issued to the maker from the owner by either phone, electronically or mail without any positive feeback from the maker or any attempt to rectify the situation. note: the incident date listed here is simply the purchase date - all incidents have been continous and on going since date of purchase.*ak 2 windshield wiper failures repaired under warranty 1st at 3,973 miles 2nd at 11,660 miles. *kmb

I received a notification from oldsmobile that my vehicles engine has the potential to produce a cracking of the engine cylinder bore. if it happens i am to take the car to a dealer and the engine will be replaced. if this happens the car will be immobile. how am i to do this? the notification was not a recall but rather a policy letter. why wasn't this car recalled and the engine inspected to determine if this was beginning to or had the potential to happen? dealer plead ignorance. *nlm

Received notice from gm concerning my 2002 oldsmobile bravada, alerting me to the possibility of engine failure due to a cylinder sleeve defect. gm's proposals is to extend the warranty. this is completely unacceptable, as a safety issue, we all know the inherent dangers of an engine destroying itself at 65 mph. please check into this, before people start getting killed. *jb the vehicle's awd drive would not engage until the vehicle reached 25 mph. the consumer indicated that this fact was not mentioned in the owner's manual or any of oldsmobile's ads. *nm

Going about 50 mph on interstate when engine lost power. had multiple warning lights and messages, including abs and service brakes. pulled off on exit ramp and stopped on grass completely off travel lane. tried to restart engine several times with no success. before i could take other action, i was hit in the left rear by another car, which pushed my vehicle about 50 feet back into the travel lane. damage to rear quarter panel, bumper, and tailgate. my vehicle had to be towed to dealer. dealer was able to start on first attempt. no problem found with engine. only abs code in computer.

I have had the same problem twice in this newly leased vehicle. the engine stalls with a resulting loss in braking and steering. the engine will not restart. both incidences luckily happened at low speeds. this vehicle was intended to be for my wife. she is scared to drive the vehicle because of the safety concerns particularly if the stalling happened at high speeds on a freeway. i have requested the manufacturer to buy it back. they refuse. the dealer has had the car now for 16 days and cannot replicate the problem. i don't want to take a chance on this happening again. it is not safe particularly for my wife who is pregnant.*ak

My vehicle is the second at this dealer to have this condition. driving the vehicle like this will cause major engine component failure, per the service manager. they have already replaced the cam phaser and on a second visit, the crank shaft. the service manager told me gm has a major problem on their hands with this condition, and they have run out of ideas on how to repair it. i am trying to get the dealer to take the vehicle back and refund my money. i do not want to be gm's testing ground. a warning needs to be posted so other consumers do not make the same mistake i did.*ak
