Defect SummaryPaccar is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 kenworth t2000, t660, t700, t800, and w900, as well as model year 2009-2012 peterbilt 365, 367, 384, 386, 387, 388, 389, and 587 trucks equipped with paccar mx engines. the oil module centrifugal spinner filter cap in the paccar mx engine may become loose, possibly allowing the cap to come off and engine oil to partially discharge from the oil module onto exhaust components.
Consequence SummaryThe discharge of engine oil onto exhaust components which are hot, such as when the engine is under significant load, may cause a fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will re-torque the oil module filter cap and install a secondary retention device on the secondary centrifugal spinner filter cap. this service will be performed free of charge. the safety recall is expected to begin during march 2011. owners may contact kenworth at 1-425-828-5440 and peterbilt at 1-940-591-4196.

Defect SummaryPaccar is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 kenworth and peterbilt vehicles manufactured from february 2, 2006 through april 30, 2007. the bearing surfaces of the extended lube universal joint that attaches the inter-axle driveline to the drive axle may become prematurely worn due to breakdown of lubrication and/or excessive heat. prematurely worn bearing surfaces may result in the u-joint becoming loose and/or binding. this condition may result in universal joint failure, allowing the inter-axle driveline to detach from the axle.
Consequence SummaryDetachment of the driveline from the axle may cause the vehicle to lose power and become disabled in the roadway. also, the driveline could drop from the vehicle into the roadway increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryPaccar is working with its supplier to remedy the vehicles free of charge. the safety recall is expected to begin during february 2011. owners may contact kenworth at 425-828-5440 and peterbilt at 940-591-4196.

Defect SummaryOn certain trucks, the axle housings may have been manufactured with steel that was out of specification which could result in a fatigue failure over time.
Consequence SummaryIf a fatigue failure occurs and is left unattended, the axle may lock up or the end of the axle could come off, which may result in a vehicle crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect and replace the axles free of charge. the recall began on may 9, 2007. owners may contact kenworth at 425-828-5440 and peterbilt at 1-940-591-4196.

Defect SummaryOn some peterbilt trucks, certain parts used in the air suspensions have a high copper content causing premature failure.
Consequence SummaryFailure could cause erratic vehicle handling which can cause a vehicle crash without warning.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect and, when necessary, replace the defective parts. the recall began on january 17, 2007. owners may contact peterbilt at 1-940-591-4196.

Consequence SummaryThis reduction of fatigue strength could cause the pivot pin to crack and eventually break, causing the trailer to detach from the truck while in motion, which could cause a crash that could result in personal injury or death.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the potentially defective pivot pin free of charge. the recall began on april 18, 2008. owners may contact kenworth at 1-425-828-5440 or peterbilt at 1-940-591-4196.

During the pe odi learned that the subject vehicles are being disabled when the horton fan hub fails, due to the fan striking the radiator.apparently, warning signs of the impending failure are not always sufficient to give the driver time to pull off the highway.thus, when the failure occcurs, in some cases the vehicle is stranded and must be towed. odi has examined data which indicates that class vii and viii trucks are over represented in crashes when stranded on the highway or shoulder, as contrasted to light vehicles.further, crashes involving disabled heavy trucks being struck by light vehicles are more likely to have serious consequences. nhtsa has upgraded pe09-002 to an ea to further investigate this matter.odi will examine the warning symptoms and assess the risk of a crash in the event of a breakdown on the highway.
PE09002PACCAR INCORPORATED01/05/200905/29/2009HORTON FAN HUB FAILURES
There are 84,573 subject and peer (kenworth) vehicles.subject vehicles are model year 2007 through 2008 paccar trucks built with a horton fan hub assembly.the ea will include peer vehicles (kenworth's with horton fan hubs) in the subject population.there are a total of 1,645 warranty claims on the combined population.odi surveyed warranty claim owners and found that a significant number of the failures resulted in a disabled vehicle.odi also believes that certain models are more prone to failure and further analysis is warranted to understand the differences in failure rates. odi is concerned that a large disabled vehicle is at an increased risk of being struck in the rear by another vehicle.odi is also concerned that this failure mode provides little warning and therefore, a driver has less opportunity to remove the vehicle from the travel lanes or shoulder, once a fan separation has occurred.odi will conduct further risk assessment during the ea to gain an understanding of the warning, options available to the driver and the increased risk of the truck being struck in the event of a breakdown.nhtsa has upgraded pe09-002 to an ea (ea09-008) to further investigate this matter.

Summaryon july 13, 2010, the office of defects investigations (odi) opened an investigation on model year (my) 2007-2009 peterbilt tractors equipped with the (spl170xl extended lube inter-axle driveline).odi opened this investigation based on one vehicle owners questionnaire (voq) and certain peterbilt field reports.during the course of the investigation, odi reviewed paccar's ir (october 22, 2010) response with associated data related to warranty and complaint information, mined field data, interviewed customers and visited local dealers within the washington metropolitan area.paccarconducted testing regarding torsional loading and identified various causative factors contributed to this safety defect finding.the defect is a consequence of the bearing surfaces of the spl170xl extended lube universal joint that attaches the inter-axle driveline to the drive axle becoming prematurely worn due to a breakdown of lubrication and/or excessive heat.prematurely worn bearing surfaces may result in the u-joint becoming loose and/or binding.this condition may result in universal joint failure, allowing the inter-axle driveline to detach from the axle, which may cause the drive axle to separate from the vehicle, increasing the risk of personal injury or property damage hazard.odi learned that the affected population of the alleged defect extended to peer models within paccar.in summary, the following vehicles are being recalled: my 2007 and 2008 kenworth trucks, models t600, t660, t2000, t800 and w900 and my 2007/2008 peterbilt trucks, models357, 378, 379, 385, 386, 387, 388, and 389 allequipped with extended lube inter-axle drivelines manufactured by dana corporation.the recall affects vehicles manufactured between february 2, 2006 and april 30, 2007.at this time paccar has not yet identified a fix for the inner-axle safety defect and is currently conducting testing with the intent to provide a solution to the failure.odi will monitor the development of paccars testing and ensure a timely repair for the consumer.this investigation is closed.
