Defect SummaryThe abs hydraulic control unit can experience excessive brake actuator piston seal wear causing pump-motor deterioration.
Consequence SummaryIf this condition occurs, the abs function could be lost and reduced power assist would be experienced during vehicle braking increasing the potential for a vehicle accident.
Corrective SummaryDealers will test the vehicle's anti-lock brake system and repair the vehicles if necessary. also the warranty on all abs components will be extended to 10 years or 100,000 miles (except for the brake actuator piston assembly and the pump-motor assembly which will have a lifetime coverage). owners will also be reimbursed for previous abs component repair costs.
NotesSystem: brakes; hydraulic; anti-skid system. vehicle description: passenger vehicles and mini-vans equipped with anti-lock brake systems (abs). note: owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chrysler at 1-800-853-1403. also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-800-424-9393.

Experienced hard brake pedal (lose of braking) and brake / abs lights illuminated on the dash board. this was the second failure in the last two years after approximately 14,000 miles of operation since the last repair and for at least the fourth time since we have owned this vehicle (bought new). previous repair involved replacement of brake accumulator, dual pressure switch, brake actuator piston assembly, and the pump motor assembly, the last two of which are subject to a lifetime recall. dealer refuses to repair/replace warranted parts without agreement that other parts are replaced at a cost of approximately $900. given that it is likely that warranted part failures are leading to the failure of the other components and that the last repair only lasted for 14,000 mile we requested that chrysler cover the entire repair. chrysler refused. in addition, it has been our experience that each time we have had the brake system fail, it has included the need to replace other brake system components beyond the parts subject to the lifetime recall. thus it would appear that the lifetime recall should have been expanded to cover all of the components impacted by the failure of the warranted components. *tr

Two weeks ago the abs and brake lights came on in my 1992 plymouth grand voyager mini-van. at that moment there was no hydraulic brake pressure and it was very difficult to control the van. the van was towed to my regular, independent repair shop and they checked the condition and their diagnostic computer issued a coded error. i discovered that this abs brake was covered under an extended warranty by chrysler. i took the van to a nearby chrysler dealer and they checked. the abs light and brake light were out at this time and the dealer charged for one hour, gave me list of parts they considered may need to be replaced and verbally said it may cost about $400 or more to fix. they did not assure me that a warranty would apply. *tr

They repainted the hood for me if i was willing to pay half and now it is doing the same thing all over again but worst. the wood paneling on the sides is just peeling away and the car looks like crap on the outside but is still running good due to all the money we put into it. the brakes have been fixed twice for a faulty switch and relay switch due to the abs brake system. i was out driving just this past week and without warning i lost my brakes and i am suffering from ms so i had a great deal of diffulty stopping the vehcile with one foot i had to use two feet and prayed a lot just to get back home.

Tl*the contact owns a 1992 plymouth grand voyager. while driving at 35 mph, the contact attempted to use the brakes but the vehicle did not slow down. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealership but no repairs were performed at the time of the complaint because the parts were no longer available. the contact referenced recall 96v099000 (service brakes, hydraulic: antilock) as she felt it was related to the failure. the current and failure mileages were 196,555.

The brake pedal had became hard and wouldn't go down when depressed. the consumer coasted the vehicle into the driveway and engaged the parking brake to stop. the vehicle was towed to the dealer, and the mechanic performed a diagnostic test that indicated that the hydraulic brake pump motor assembly malfunctioned. also, there was recall 96v099000 concerning anti skid brake system. however, the dealership indicated that this recall had already been performed. the remedy failed, and the manufacturer was not honoring the warranty as stated in the recall, and were not sending the recall part to the dealership because the dealership was unable to get a diagnostic test code indicating that the recall part failed, although the dealership duplicated the problem , and indicated that the recall part was causing the problem. *ak (the second consumer: tara beth) *sc *jb

My 1992 plymouth grand voyager minivan has experienced recurring failure of the anti-lock braking system. the brake system warning light and abs warning light both illuminated. on occasion the system resumed operation if the vehicle was turned off or not driven for 2 or more hours. in march of 2003 a local garage diagnosed the abs relay was not providing power to the abs pump. the relay was replaced - cost $100. days later the system failed again. the pump would only operate if connected to direct battery voltage to start it running. in late april the abs pump was replaced by another local garage cost over $500. the system operated another 3 weeks, and then failed again, completely failing during in mid-june. the van was towed to the same garage. the technician identified that the abs relay coil had failed. the van is un-drivable because the abs pump also supplies power brake pressure. the van was towed to chris leith dodge in wake forest, nc on july 3, 2003 and inspected. on july 11, 2003 the service department let me know that they needed the district manager to make determination of recall warranty repair of the system. july 15, 2003, the service manager and district manager determined that the part the technician identified as malfunctioning (hydraulic assembly r-4683398) was not a part of recall 96v-099 # 685. the abs pump is part of the recall and was to be warranted for life. the recall also states that repairs done earlier to this part were to be reimbursed as a part of this recall. i await information on how long it will take to obtain and install repair parts. the repair estimate is $999.84. the van was purchased used for $1800. repairs are nearing that value. according to complaints and the engineering evaluation this is a recurring problem. i know the van is not new, but at least it can be safe, or the public should be warned not to keep these vehicles in operation if chrysler will not honor the terms and spirit of the recall.

We purchased our mini van in november 1996 and had the first transmission failure less than 2 months later and had the same problem repaired 3 times more in the 3 years we have owned it. in april 1996, a recall was issued for the abs of this make/model/year. when we purchased it, the dealership did not tell us this nor did chrysler corp. we found out after our abs failed when driving. luckily we were not involved in an accident. it then failed again 6 months after they fixed the abs in february 2000. they will not do the repair now for under $1600--we don't think we should be paying anything! i believe we may have been part of a consumer fraud from the dealership as they told us of no recalls at the time of purchase when there were several issued on this particular year and model. we want chrysler to refund our purchase price and cost of repairs over the past three years. we drive around with our 5 children in the car and cannot risk another abs failure. the asst to the ceo at daimler chrysler was of no help stating, we don't make our vehicles to inconvenience you. when it is more than being inconvenienced it is about the safety of our family and other people on the road at the same time we are. any help you can give us is much appreciated as we will not give up until something is done to remedy this situation. thank you. *ak
