Defect Summary | Vehicle description: mini vans. the bolts used to attach the strut to the body and the rear liftgate can accumulate fatigue damage if three factors combine. if the bolt is loose, the gas strut is over-pressurized, and the frequency of opening and closing cycles is higher than for the average customer, the bolt can fail.
Consequence Summary | Personal injury could occur if the bolts break allowing the liftgate to fall suddenly.
Corrective Summary | Dealers will inspect for loose fasteners, if the fasteners are loose, the strut (and integral bolts) will be replaced. if the bolt shows evidence of torque, the bolt will be removed, larger washers will replace the existing washer and the bolt will be reinstalled and hand tightened to the target torqued.
Notes | Owner notification began during august 1999. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chrysler at 1-800-992-1997. also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236. |

EA94005 | CHRYSLER GROUP LLC | 01/31/1994 | 10/25/1995 | LIFTGATE LATCHES | 95I001000
Liftgate latches in the subject vehicles have failed in low and moderate speed impacts resulting in occupant ejections, injuries, and fatalities.there are two failure modes associated with latch failure: fork bolt-detent lever bypass, and inertial unlatching.nhtsa analyses of chrysler and peer minivans took the form of static and dynamic crash testing, engineering evaluations, complaint and field analyses, and real world data analyses.a technical report discussing these analyses can be found in the engineering analysis technical report in the public viewing file.chrysler has advised nhtsa that it will conduct a campaign to replace the latches on all the subject vehicles.the chrysler campaign will consist of notification letters to all owners; free replacement of all latches with stronger, safer latches regardless of the age of the minivans; national advertising to promote customer awareness of the campaign; quarterly reports regarding campaign completion rates; as well as additional measures to ensure a high completion rate, above and beyond the actions that normally would be taken in a formal safety recall.these include follow up written and telephonic notifications to owners who do not bring their vehicles in for corrective action.nhtsa firmly believes that the crash performance of the latches on these minivans raises serious safety concerns, and that the campaign addresses these concerns.the chrysler corrective action will increase the strength of the liftgate latches and decrease the potential for inertial unlatching, thereby reducing the risk of crash-related openings of the liftgate and possible occupant ejection through the liftgate opening.owners of chrysler minivans will get a stronger, safer latch free of charge at the earliest possible time, without the need for further technical investigation and complex and time-consuming litigation with an uncertain outcome.based on the above, odi is closing this investigation.

Both driver's door and passenger's doors have failed spot welds joining inside and outside door panels. this has caused doors to sag misaligning the latches. the area around the latches has cracked and they no longer work properly. this is a safety issue since either door may open unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion.*ak

The passenger door has flung open, while driving, twice. i consider this a safety problem, while driving. the manufacturer says that it is not a recalled item, so they will not address it. they also will not give me a supervisor to talk to about the matter. no matter how many miles a vehicle has on it, as long as it is maintained well, keep in good condition, and has not been in a wreck, i would think this should be addressed by the manufacturer. it is dangerous. i quote a recall of the jeep cherokee, 1993 action number pe95047 there was a failure of the door assembly welds. this is the same year and the same company that manufactured this vehicle i own. thank you for your attention! for information: brad davis, at customer center toll free number 1-800-992-1997 chrysler corporation told me that he calls it, as to whether the chrysler corporation will accept a claim for the fixing of this problem. he would not give me a supervisor to speak with about the matter. he said he made the decisions. billy the service manager, at rick justice, 1105 south frontage road, meridian, ms. said that they would not file it with chrysler. i would have to pay. it isn't a safety matter. also, the vehicle has too many miles on it. both brad and billy said this. mileage has nothing to do with body, if the car has been maintained. i still contend this is a safety problem. i look forward to hearing from you. *ak

I was driving on a surface street at 20mph when all of a sudden it felt like something slammed into my van. inside if felt like an earthquake with the car jolting from back to front. the whole interior was making terrible noisesi i thought the whole car was falling apart. i got out to look there was nothing on the exterior. i tried to lift the hatchback and could not. when i was able to get it open, the hydraulic cylinder on the rt had snapped off from the car frame. when it happened, my steering wheel jolted from my hands and i was pulled to the lane to the left. had there been a car there, i would have had an accident. i went to the service dept and was told there had been a recall on this part in 1992 but it did not cover my car year, which they thought peculiar because it is the same part that had been recalled the previous year. they told me to contact you to follow up and notify them with an authorization number and they can repair it under warranty. i called your vm but no one has returned my call. i will also contact the auto safety hotline. thx cherrie dolloff i should be home by 3pm from work

When we went to lift the tail gate to remove my daughter's friend's bike, we encountered resistance. we discovered that the upper bolt that attaches the strut to the lift gate had broken in two. when we attempted to get a replacement part, we started to hear stories about this failure. the dealership's service department was closed (saturday) and we left for a camping trip on monday, returning today. when i called the dealership, they acknowledged a recall on another years model, but were unhelpful with my problem. these gates are very heavy and i am just glad that the gate did not come crashing down on my daughter's head!
