While traveling at about 50 mph, the transmission failed with a very loud noise and dumped transmission fluid onto the roadway. apparently, a pin in the differential had come loose and destroyed the housing and most internal components. i understand that this is a common problem with chrysler mini van transmissions. chrysler has charged me over $2500 for a replacement unit since they will not take the old unit as a ?core?. this should not happen with only 70,000 miles on the car. chrysler needs to recall these units and admit they have a serious problem with this vehicle.

I bought my mini-van in 1999 with 68,000 miles on it, after looking through the paper work that came with the vehicle i learned that the transmission had been overhaulded by the dealership at 36,000 miles. in 2001 i had about 84,000 miles when the transmission failed again, it cost me $1800.00 to have it re-built. now i have 142,000 miles on it and the transmission has gone out again and i am looking at either replacing the transmission with a re-built one from chrysler which is $1699.00 just for the transmission not including labor, or $1800.00 - $2200.00 for a overhaul. if these transmission have such a problem why aren't they being recalled?

Automatic transmission failed at the above mileage. the van will shift from first to second, then stays locked in second gear. further acceleration results in higher rpm with no attachment to a gear.(like you are in neutral). car is currently in the repair shop waiting an estimate as to repair.

My wife was driving our kids on the highway at 65 mph when the van suddenly shifted into second gear. this nearly caused a huge accident. i then find that the transmission needed replacement. i researched this problem and found that this is not a unique problem by any means. chrysler is aware of this problem, and has not made any significant changes to their transmission. this safe mode where the transmission goes to second gear is made to allow the driver to drive to a safe place. if chrysler can't make a more durable transmission, they should be able to at least make the safe mode go to nuetral instead of second gear at high speeds. on a more sad note, $2,400.00 later for a rebuilt transmission(the best price i could find), i found out the the van isn't worth much more than that anyway. too bad, because i actually like the van and how it works for our family. i will have to go to another brand after this one completely dies.*ak

While driving down the interstate doing about 70 mph i heard a loud noise. looked at speedometer and it registered 0. i had no power. barely managed to get van off the road. got out and looked under it, there was transmission fluid everywhere. had it checked out by personal mechanic. he then told me that there have been numerous complaints about this year of plymouth grand voyagers. i only have 86,000 miles on it. also the sliding door locks have failed, windshield washers have failed, a/c has failed, not to mention the airbag light, fuel line and all of the numerous other recalls it has had on it. *nlm

I have many of the same problems listed in the other 72 grand voyager complaints. first the driver side drive shaft failed, which is unheard of and clearly a defective part. a few weeks later the transmission failed. in the process of self destruction, an internal piece of the transmission produce a large hole in the transmission housing. it is not uncommon for the housing to be damaged when the transmission fails. in fact, due to demand, chrysler is now charging almost as much for the housing as they are for the rebuilt transmission. due to the large number of defective vans on the market, chrysler is resisting a recall and any assistance. after all daimler/ chrysler has much larger unethical issues to deal with, such as a federal investigation into price fixing. the $7.50/ hr. minions on the help line are worthless. the only hope we have is to get the nhtsa to recall these rolling pieces of garbage, and to stop buying chryslers product.*ak

Originally noted the reverse gear had a delay when purchased new, but was told it was normal. while driving home from airport car slowed and appeared to lack power (clutch slippage), 2 miles later upon deceleration and accecleration heard a grinding sound and noted a sluggish forward motion. made it back to home and shut car down (nite time). restarted car in morning and noted that car would not back out of garage, also tried putting car in nuetral, but care would not move (appears to be stuck in a gear). vehicle currently unmovable. contacted manufacture and requested assistance with parts (i would pay for labor), but the reps (more than one) i talked with said that they decline to provide any assistance. they also told me that their word was final and that it would be useless to ask to talk to anyone else. since i am in the military they refered me to military sales and service (they said that i might try arbritration). whatever happened to good faith and loyalty to customers.*ak

The transmission failed without any hint of a problem suddenly and completely. i was stranded on a busy road with a sick child who had just come from the hospital after having surgery. thankfully, noone was hurt, but the outcome could have been much much worse. research indicates that chrylser transmissions are notoriously bad and i do not believe that a well maintained, light duty van should have a complete and sudden transmission failure at only 51,000 miles. neither the dealer nor chrysler believe this problem to be unusual. it is interesting to note that chrysler now offers a 7 year, 100,000 mile powertrain warranty.*ak

Air bags are something that should not fail on a vehicle since it is government regulated safety equipment on a vehicle and it is a low wear item. my airbags have failed and chrysler expects me to pay to fix them. they have also tied the airbags into the horn and cruise control. i feel that since this is a safety related item, chrysler should be responsible for the repairs. if these bags fail to deploy or misfire due to their design, i and my passengers could be severely hurt or killed.

Auto transmission failure? couple of times my van hesitated to drive when i put gear in drive position . today, it happened again and after it started to move, it did not go faster than 35 miles speed. my van is only 5 years old and this should not suppose to happen to any major components. please advise if this is common problem with all1996 voyegers. do many owners have same complaints? i have friends told me that this a common problem of automatic transimmision with all 1996 models. if that is so than chrysler should fix it without charge to me.is there any secret warranty or good wili policy or service campaign exists? please advise soon. also many times, transmission indicator does not show the positon of d or r when shifted to d or r position. all positons stay lit. so its difficult to judge if you are in drive or reverse position. also the cylinoid makes loude noise. i told many times to dealer during warranty period and they told me that is normal. but i don't think so. i have checked other same model and their cylinoid don't make that kind of noise.what are the facts?

The transmission just died. luckily, we made it to our work parking lot and weren't stranded in a heavy traffic situation or in a snowstorm. total cost of repair estimated at $1900. environmental hazard of leaking oil when transmission case also cracks. coincidence???: my boss just informed me today that his 1996 chrysler product mini-van with less miles than mine had a similar transmission problem some time ago. i believe the chrysler product mini-van transmissions are junk and chrysler knows it, but the transmission defect only causes a true safety hazard when it breaks in a situation where continuing speed is necessary (like passing). obviously, the transmission oil getting dumped on the streets when the transmission case cracks isn't good. but again, why would chrysler care about a little oil? *ak

I have received a recall notice for a radiator fan relay, which is not mentioned on your site. today, i found a new leak of transmission fluid, the red lights are again flashing on and off, there are power surges in the control panels, the engine chokes and shudders. oh, and the a/c is out again. we won't even mention the windhield wipers which have continually gone on and off since we have owned this car, or the airbag alarms, or the incredible amount of money we have put into this maintained car. my 20,000 car has become a 40,000 lemon. there is simply no excuse for this, mileage or not. i have attempted to keep this car because i wanted a safe car for my teenagers to drive. now, it appears i have them driving the pinto of the 1990's. i thought i was keeping my kids safe!! when the engine failed, i had the car taken to an non dealer becuase i am fed up with their attitudes...what do you expect at 100,000 miles, etc. when the first diagnostic was ran on the car, a bewildering array of codes came up. after changing the spark plugs, all of the codes dissapeared. however, the electrical problems increased in intensity, and now i'm afraid my daugher will go up in a fireball. i already assume there will be no response from the manufacturer....i am going to consider a suit as i consider these cars dangerous! fuel leaks, static charge buildups? come on!

POWER TRAIN - DRIVELINE - DIFFERENTIAL UNIT

While traveling at about 50 mph, the transmission failed with a very loud noise and dumped transmission fluid onto the roadway. apparently, a pin in the differential had come loose and destroyed the housing and most internal components. chrysler has charged me over $2500 for a replacement unit since they will not take the old unit as a core. this should not happen with only 70,000 miles on the car. chrysler needs to recall these units and admit they have a serious problem with this vehicle.*ak
