I took my 1996 plymouth grand voyager to my mechanic to help me locate a creaking noise in the front of the van. we finally figured out that it was the sway bar. but what we also discovered was the tower mount (that connects the strut to the body frame) was severely rusted. the rest of the body has very little rust. my mechanic contacted several dealerships to find out about a repair kit for this problem, learned that these dealerships are having the same problem with their courtesy vans. because the tower mount is such an integral part of the working of the vehicle, i feel that this is a safety issue. there should be no way that water can get up and stay in the tower mount and cause the mount to rust out. *jb

During some regular maintenance my repair shop noticed that the strut towers in my 1996 plymouth grand voyager were badly deteriorated and the the struts were in danger of pushing through the top of the tower and consequently the hood. this situation would have rendered the vehicle uncontrollable and presented a dangerous situation if i, or my children, was on the highway. if not hidden under the hood i would have noticed it some time ago, long before the warranty expired. also this kind of structural failure should not occur in a vehicle this young and is indicative of a design fault. chrysler has issued a tsb number 23-044-02 acknowledging this problem and has a repair kit for it. clearly they are aware of the problem and uninterested in helping people with a design flaw that takes many years to develop. they will not help customers who have bought a defective product unless your agency forces them to address this issue and i urge you to do so.*ak

Air bag light is on, the horn does not work and the speed control is inoperative. there are chrysler service bulletins on the clock spring wiring harness but no recall. this is a safety hazard (no horn, no airbag) and should be addressed by a recall.

Strut towers are rusting and pose a safety risk of crash and/or rollover when struts eventually break loose from the strut towers. *jb

I have a 96 grand voyager with 82000 miles. the towers which support the front struts are both grossly rusted and fatigued. when the strut breaks through the tower it is inevitable that the tire will lock up in the wheel well causing loss of steering and vehicle control. i have contacted chrysler regarding this and they say that there is no recall for this defect.

96 plymouth voyager van with 80k miles. both strut inside engine compartment are exhibiting major metal fatigue. both strut towers are shearing away from main frame assembly. dealer states that this needs to be repaired or front of van will collapse. this started to occur several years ago but dealer always stated that this was not an issue. in researching the web, i have seen other complaints of metal fatigue on the chrysler strut towers. i can provide visual evidence if desired. would like to have the nhtsa consider this as a potential safety issue. please contact me and i can provide digital pictures of both strut towers shearing through main chassis frame. *nlm

While driving, transmission jumped out of place & would not shift gears-had to rebuild & problem still not fixed, air conditioner completely went out had to replace whole system. independent front torsion bar- front sway bars broke at bolts-upper strut bearings damaged-completely replaced. very dissapointed in this vehicle< not safe to travel with children in it!!

Front sway bar found broken at bolt on drivers side of van. also, upper strut bearings may be damaged and need to be replaced. mechanic was suprised that the local dealer had sway bar in stock, as they usually only stock parts that are routinely replaced or that are know to fail. mechanic stated that if sway bar had broken free at bolt, it could have punctured the drivers side tire, or caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
