RQ04001CHRYSLER GROUP LLC01/28/200406/04/2004DRIVER AIR BAG CLOCKSPRING FAILURE
Complaints report air bag warning light illuminates, and this may be accompanied with a non-functioning horn and/or cruise control (if equipped).this is indicative of an open-circuit clockspring failure (results in non-functioning driver's air bag), similar to the failure condition that was the subject of daimlerchrysler's recall of model year 1996-1998.5 minivans (recall no. 02v-293).this recall query has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea04-013).
EA04013CHRYSLER GROUP LLC06/04/200405/25/2005DRIVER AIR BAG CLOCKSPRING FAILURE04V480000
The driver air bag clockspring can develop an open-circuit condition resulting in nonfunctional driver-side frontal air bag, horn, cruise control (if equipped), and/or steering wheel radio control (if equipped).in its october 5, 2004 letter to nhtsa, daimlerchrysler stated that it will conduct a safety recall and replace the clockspring assembly on all my 1998.5-2000 daimlerchrysler minivans, built between march 1998 and august 2000, with 70,000 miles or less.it will also provide a lifetime warranty for this component on my 1998.5-2000 minivans, regardless of mileage.the details of the corrective action are described in daimlerchrysler's letter (see recall no. 04v-480).the agency believes that further expenditure of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists with respect to those vehicles covered only by the lifetime warranty.the agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances.see page 2 for additional information.

Early fall service engine soon light on. dealer charged several hundred dollars to fix. soon after air bag lite came on while driving but often went off or flickered. believed it was loose wire or fuse, caused by dealer fixing previous problem. so did not believe it was urgent. however now cruise control does not work either. became alarmed that problems were connected and air bag may not be functioning, and that this problem may be dangerous. went to nhtsa site and was shocked to see recall notice posted for air bag lite/no cruise control clock spring problem. i am concerned because my vehicle has more than 70,000 miles on it but it was manufactured in 2/98, within the recall parameters please advise. i will be contacting my dealer as well. thank you for your oversight of this problem. dt

The horn on the van was intermittent from nearly the first use. we rarely use it an did not remember to inquire about it over a period of several years whenever we were at the dealership for service. finally, one time we asked about it and were told that we had a faulty sop module and that it was likely that the driver-side airbag wouldn't function. we wrote to daimler-chrysler and they responded that they wouldn't cover the replacement. seems ludicrous that a safety device on a new vehicle could be rendered useless and the manufacturer wouldn't step-up to replace it.*ak

This clockspring assembly failed over a period of time, begining in about 2000 with the cruise control failure. this was followed by the airbag failure, as manifested by the airbag check lamp remaining on. finally, the horn failed to work. i subsequently replaced the clockspring assembly this month, which repaired all the above problems. i have the defective clockspring, and am willing send it to you for analysis if you so desire. *ak

We own a 1998 plymouth grand voyager. we had received a recall notice regarding the front air bag (clockspring assembly). this notice was for vehicles with 70,000 miles or less (free repair). our vehicle has 75,000+ miles and yesterday our air bag light is staying on... i do not think that it is responsibile for diamler chrysler to set milage limits for repairs. we have a large family and us our van alot... diamler chrysler should not be aloud to set milage limits. because of this decision, i will not purchase another diamler chrysler product. thank you.
