Gm notified the agency by letter dated january 28, 2009, that it will conduct a safety recall of pontiac g6 vehicles built from january 3 through january 31, 2005.vehicles produced during this time period have shown a highly elevated incident rate of improper operation of the brake lamps. odi opened this investigation after receiving reports that consumers would use their brakes and discover that the brake lamps would not illuminate.also, consumers report that the brake lamps would illuminate when the brake pedal was not applied.odi's review of the complaint data finds that the complaint rate for the january 2005 production is 20 times greater than for the remainder of the subject vehicle population.likewise, the warranty rate for the january 2005 production is 11 times greater than for the remainder of the subject vehicle population.in its letter to the nhtsa, general motors (gm) explained that the primary cause of this brake condition was fretting corrosion (oxidation) of the connector pins on the body control module (bcm) that connect to the to the brake pedal position sensor (bpps).the corrosion prevents the bcm from receiving the correct signal voltage from the bpps.in december 2008, gm released technical service bulletin (tsb) #08-05-22-009 to provide technicians the correct repair procedures for subject vehicles that experience improper illumination of the brake lamps.this action taken by gm is sufficient to resolve the issues raised by this investigation.

While driving my 2005 pontiac g6, the brake lamps go off when i actually press the brake pedal. they will stay on or sometimes flash at random times the entire time i drive. it is a well documented problem with these cars and it is related to corrosion on the bcm. this has happened twice to me in this car. pontiac has never issued a recall, their way of fixing it is putting dielectric grease on the connectors and calling it good. it worked for me for about a year, and the problem has resurfaced....while driving down the interstate at 65mph. faulty brake lamps are an extreme danger to anyone driving the vehicle. *tr

The issues started by the cruise control unexpectedly disengaging while driving. it has now progressed to it the cruise control comes on when you press the brake. that was almost a year ago. now, the cruise control starts when the brake is pressed. however, when it comes on with the brake it stays on approximately 11-12 seconds and the disengages. the brake lights come on when the brake pedal is not being pressed. when, the brakes are being pressed the brake lights do not always come on. these issues have been happening since spring of 2012.i have taken my vehicular to gmc before and i was told their were no recalls and they have never heard of my problems before. but, if i pay there diagnostic fee to find out what's wrong in the electrical system that they can replace the electrical system but it would be a costly repair. i was then informed it would be cheaper to just trade it in. i was appalled. *tr

My electrical power steering completely locks up while driving, making it nearly impossible to turn my steering wheel. it has happened almost every time i drive it recently. it also makes my car shake and make clunking noises. it is in the repair shop now, but because there is no recall, i am expected to pay for the repair, which i am refusing to do. with the amount of complaints and the absolute danger of this problem, it is ridiculous that this car is not recalled and covered by pontiac. i will pay a lawyer fee to sue pontiac before i pay for repairs caused by their faulty engineering. *tr

I was driving down a road in my neighborhood and realized my car became very hard to steer. then my check engine light flashed across my dash and radio stating power steering. i stopped at the stop sign and i was able to pull into a driveway and turn off my car to reset it. i am so glad that a little kid or something didn't run out in front of me as i would have not been able to steer around an accident. *tr

Where do i begin!!! my g6 i love but apparently the electrical power steering goes out. so, with that being said you have no power steering. its is really hard to turn your wheel, on highway to get off an exit, pull in to park somewhere, make a tight turn, and try and pull out of a tight parking situation. i realize one of the ways to fix the problem is to get it fix (obviously outrageous price), or just turn the car off and restart that seems to work. so, apparently about 3-4 years ago gm realized this manufacture defect/recall but not a safety recall? i don't understand it but you know how big companies are never want to be accountable. ok, so in 2010 i receive this letter from gm about this loss of power steering but in the letter reminder it states the vehicle can still be steered in a safe manner but will require greater driver effort at low vehicle speeds or when stopped. ok so when you are on the highway??? i work alot and have to travel, and for personal reasons i travel a good bit. i have been very lucky when this defect occurs either someone with me to guide me through it or for some reason the highway is non busy and i can pull over (reminder 2 hands on the wheel with no power steering using all my arm strength to pull over) ok, so again this gm letter, so ok course after trying to jump some hoops i don't meet the requirements for this repair to fix by gm at their cost. that letter states vehicles with less than 100,000miles..yea ok, me i travel!!! crazy so i complain why not right. so, 2 years pass receive a letter from gm again about this power steering issue now 150,000ml..again!!! *tr

On numerous occasions, my car will chime once and a message will appear about my power steering. i will lose my power steering for a short period of time. it will be difficult to steer the car over off the road. it has also chimed and a message will come on about servicing the air bags. after the air bag message, the security paddlelock will come on and my car will basically shut down. i will lose my ability to accelerate and steer the car. this has occured while driving down the highway and also when turning corners or stopping at stop signs. once the the vehicle has been stopped and shut off, it will not start again. i have to let it sit for at least 20 to 25 minutes and then i can restart it. sometimes it will run fine for weeks, and other times such as yesterday, it continued every time i drove it. i jsut had numerous large repair bills and i have no more money to fix this major problem.

I noticed that when trying to park my vehicle the steering wheel locks up. it is difficult to steer and appears that there is no power steering. the problem does not correct itself until you are going more than 20 mph. this continues to be an ongoing problem.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 pontiac g6. the contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the wheel jerked violently. the failure would recur sporadically and in addition, the steering wheel would also seize without warning. also, the interior lights would operate intermittently. the dealer diagnosed that there was a sensor failure and that the alternator needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified but denied any assistance with repairs to the failure. the failure mileage was 23,000 and the current mileage was 132,557.

We own a 2005 pontiac g6. this vehicle has a chronic issue with the brake pedal sensor.when the sensor is having issues, it is extremely hard to get the car to go from park to drive. more importantly though is then the sensor causes the brake light to work in reverse. when you apply the brakes, the lights go off, when the pedal is not depressed, the light stays on. we have had several sensors replaced and now have been told the fix is the electical lubricant. this electical lubricant is only good for a few months. obviously, it is a half assed fix. we have been to several former pontiac dealers only to have been told we are out of luck. this is an extremely dangerous situation. while driving at night, if you depress your brakes and no lights come on it could lead to a rear-end collision.thankfully this last time my husband was warned of this event by a gal who was driving behind him. my husband has been pulled over by the police because they thought he was drinking. he was told that a characteristic of a drunk driver is that they ride thier brakes. gm needs to get this corrected!!! it is not safe. we purchased this vehicle for my husband who drives 50 miles round trip to work everyday. this is an accident waiting to happen. we are seriously contemplating trading in the vehicle for another one because of this and other issues with the g6. it has been a lemon since we got it between this brake issue, a clunking noise when turning (which we were told is nothing from our former pontiac dealers) and the panoramic sunroof leaking and noise issues, which as well we were told nothing can be done about. (we had standing water in the vehicle w/ the leaks) this brake issue needs to be looked at!!!! we will not buy another gm vehicle because of this crappy service and lack of care in getting this vehicle recalled. what is it going to take??? i have seen other complaints addressing this same thing. i would emplore nhtsa to see what can be done about this.

2005 pontiac g6 - water pours from the interior lights splashing the inside of the car and driver which is as unexpected as a child running in front of a vehicle. the sudden downpour may cause the driver to loose control of the vehicle when they look up to see where the water is coming from.. nobody was injured in my incident however, the water is coming from the drain tubes from the top of the car which have a tendancy to become disconnected. i am told this is not considered a safety hazard but a driver does not expect to be suddenly soaked by water when driving a car and can cause the driver to become reckless which may cause damage or injury to a vehicle or a person if it has not already. this is a common problem and needs to seriously considered as a safety hazard. other than the safety hazard that it is, it also causes the interior of the car to be completely destroyed from mold and/or mildew needing complete replacement. the dealers are very much aware of the problem but yet i have taken my car in twice and because it wasn't leaking at the time, the could not see a problem. mind you the back floorboard and seat were completely soaked from 8 gallons of water which had been sucked out of the car prior to driving it to the dealership.

According to recall #08317 by general motors, the brake lamps on a 2005 pontiac g6 will not work properly due to fretting corrosion in a wiring connector within the body control module. my vehicle was taken in to van chevrolet of kansas city, mo to fix this issue, and was told due to the fretting corrosion the bcm needs replaced. i was told by this dealership they could not replace the bcm without a fee and refused to make the necessary corrections to solve this problem and allowed the vehicle to leave the shop with the brake lights being defective. this would not need to be replaced if not for the fretting corrosion as stated by the recall mentioned above. general motors and any gm dealerships have a responsibility to fix this issue.

I bought the car in april of 2008. in july of 2008 i was experiencing problems with the brake lights working opposite, cruise control stopped working as well as instrument panel. i had a new body control module put in my car and it was fine up until november of 2010 when i started having problems with the instrument panel again. in december of 2010 my brake lights started working opposite again as well as flashing while i am driving. i have been harrased by other motorists who i have gotten mad because of this problem. it is a serious safety issue as other motorists cannot tell if im braking. i have called gm this week and they have told me that the work i had done for the same problem is no longer under warrenty. suprising. i have done some homework and looked up the 2005 pontiac g6 problems and it shows only a small majority of these cars have been recalled for this problem. mine was not on this list. why? i have also found thousands of other owners with the same problem.

In early may while in san antonio, texas approximately 2 hours from my home town my battery died. the reason my battery died is because i have been experiencing difficulties starting my car. a technical bulletin that was brought to my attention for the lx9 exgine seems like it describes the problem to a tee. it is on intermittent extended crank time on hot engine restart, starter may not disengage after engine start. the engine turns but i will usually have to turn the key back and restart it at least a second time for it to actually run. i have taken the vehicle twice now to the dealership and have been told each time that they are unable to reproduce the problem so they cant fix it. each time calls for another diagnostic test and fee. on may 5th all the extra juice to turn on the car cause my battery to drain completely so i was stranded for hours in a town where i know no one. this is a reoccurring problem that just cant seem to be fixed.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 pontiac g6. while driving at approximately 50-55 mph and attempting a turn, the steering began abnormally jerking. the contact would continue to turn the steering wheel in order to correct the failure. in addition, when starting the vehicle she would have to continue to play with the key in the ignition switch before the vehicle would start. when driving at speeds of at least 60 mph, the vehicle would exhibit excessive shaking. the dealer replaced the rooters, tires, brakes and performed a wheel alignment. the dealer was unable to duplicate the steering failure. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 40,000 and the current mileage was 90,000.

I have a 2005 pontiac g6 gm recall # 80317 - the recall does not include my vin #. my vehicle has every symptom and issue that the recall calls out for but gm/pontiac will not honor the recall because it does not include my vin #. is there anyways that my vin can be included in the recall? i am a safety hazard as my brake lights dont work, my cruise control doesnt work and when i try to shift the car out of park, i have to apply a lot of force to the brake pedal. all of these are issues that are called out in the recall. *tr thanks aaron slavey

I was diving my 2005 pontiac g6 when i was turning into a busy intersection my power steering locked up and the light on the dash lit up, almost causing a head on collision by cars doing 50 mph. i was just sitting in the intersection because i could not control my car after that happened almost getting hit by another 2 cars. i turned my car off and back on and the power steering worked again. took it to the dealership they replaced the power steering motor because it was under warranty. the steering wheel column needed to be replaced but wasn't under warrant so they did not replace it. they said it works for now but it could go out anytime im driving, which can cause an accident. i couldn't believe what happened thought it was a fluke just my luck, only to see so many people having the say problem in the same year, in the same car with the same mileage. the power steering went out with no warning. these cars need to be recalled asap somebody will get hurt or even killed by this. i was only doing around 20mph and almost got hit three times head on and from the back imagine if i was on the expressway or even turning down a side street and loosing the steering and running up a curb endangering innocent bystanders. since these are newer cars there are so many of these cars out there that haven't experienced this yet but will. not only people driving these cars are in danger at anytime but other people are to. i almost got hit head on by a ford truck his life wasin danger just as much as mine. how these cars are not recalled yet blows my mind?????? so many people lives are in danger im driving a car that they said that there is a possibility that it could happen again. are they just going to wait until people get killed by this if not already or come up with a solution before more people lives are at risk. these cars need to be looked at and recalled asap. i heard something about an extended warranty but they don't make extended lives. recall asap recall asap. *tr

Owner of a pontiac 2005 g6. i have had it in to the dealership in the past to work on a knocking noise in the steering column. during hotter months the knocking noise is more active. i have had it in at least twice to the dealer to deal with this. the last time it was serviced they claimed it was the i shaft. it was lubed and repositioned. there was also noise from steering gear. the gear was replaced and set toe in. as of this last friday, june 12th, i was driving home from out of town and the power steering message showed up on my console. i figured there must be something wrong with the fluid and had my son get the booklet out of the glove box. the power steering was drastically tightening up. this startled me since it involved navigating traffic and getting it off the road especially since i also had my son with me. we pulled off the road and could not locate a specific area for putting in power steering fluid. the car was taken to the pontiac dealership. we were told this was a computer issue with the car - there is no hydraulics - and that the steering column must be replaced for $750.00. i, too, am filing my complaint with nhtsa today for the safety of families when in transportation. this has been a huge inconvenience to us especially when the car has been in for service for the same similar reasons that others are filing their complaint! when i read that others as well lost power to others, this highly concerns me! i am also not satisfied that without a recall, only a replacement part my be used to fix the problem until an actual recall is ordered and the actual problem is fixed. this means i will still have to worry about driving my vehicle and be cautious of the problem happening again. this is not a suitable alternative for the consumers who have purchased these vehicles! *tr

Well it all started for my stupid purchase of a ?!@#$% car, i have had numerous problems with this car costing me tons of money. 6 times i have had to replace my rotors and my brake pads because of a jolting shaking feeling with this car and i was told that the rotors are warped and that they need to be replaced. they never changed the rotors all they did was mill them down, 3 times they milled them down and the problem kept coming back until my warranty ran out they said your on your own. sometimes i try to start my car and it will shake and put and die out and then it i will try it again and it will start, but i have had my car not start back up 2 times and had to get it towed and fixed and all they said was it was a dead battery but this happened 2 times with in a year and it still happens now. i started my car and started to drive and my steering wheel would violently jolt it self to the left and the right and it actually hurt my wrist from this and then the car died out and had to pay for towing and problem was a dead battery is what they said. passenger door some how filled up with water and caused all my electrical to go haywire in my car and showing door ajar over and over again and it would go off causing my interior lights to not go off, my flood lights wouldn't work, cd player and radio only work when they want to work now, and some of the lights in the car go on and off when they want. power arm in my car has been replaced 2 times already costing me a fortune and it needs to be replaced again, wonder if that has to do with the shotty rotors and brake problems. after revealing this to gm all i have heard back from them was to take it in a get a diagnostic test which i will have to pay for and then they might do something about it. dont buy any pontiac cars, the warranty only means if there is a problem they will do nothing to fix it and when warranty is up your on your own. still haven't had anything resolved with this vehicle. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 pontiac g6. the contact noticed that the steering wheel was extremely difficult to turn. she also experienced roughness while driving, accompanied by a loud, indescribable noise. lastly, it was difficult to remove the key from the ignition. she took the vehicle to the dealer and had the drive-shaft replaced along with a sensor in the instrument cluster. immediately after the repair, the failure resurfaced. speed was not a factor. the failure mileage was 31,100 and current mileage was 49,000.

I own a 2005 pontiac g6 which i purchased from a dealer after it had been leased for 1 year. the vehicle had 12000 miles on it when purchase. numerous problems have occurred with this vehicle after purchase. starting with a noise, clunk in the steering. this has been in the repair shop for upwards to 7-8 times, each time new repairs done on different parts. this problem has never been resolved. now at 64500 miles the noise is still there after repairs only 4000 miles ago. starting in october of 2007 i began having problems with the brake lights and cruise control. brake lights working only sporadically as well as the cruise control. there has been documented repairs on the is of 7-8 times as well. this problem also has never been resolved. on september 17, 2008 my car was involved in a rear-end automobile accident in most part and no doubt due to faulty brake light system. many other problems have occurred with this vehicle as well including poor sunvisor manufacturing, leaky map lights in overhead console, rapid wear of brake pads and rotors, rapid tire wear, starting drags when starting, occasionally the car will not shift out of park when the car is running and brake pedal is applied. *tr

I am the owner of a 2005 pontiac g6 four door sedan . for the past two months the engine check light has come on along with a warning on the audio display showing power steering. these incidents were infrequent and no particular reason was found for the warning. up until last week i attributed the problem to a faulty sensor. last week i started my car and the check engine light came on, the power steering was displayed in the audio system, and i had no power steering to for the vehicle. i turned the vehicle off then back on and the problem was gone. on saturday 08/30/2008 while driving on a straight road the warning lights came on again and i lost power steering in the car again. i pulled to the side of the road, turned the car off then back on and the problem was gone. on 09/03/2008 i started my car and the warning lights again came on and i again had no power steering. i again turned the car off then back on and the problem was gone. i then drove to red hoagland pontiac in bradenton, fl for repairs where i was told two modules needed to be replaced and it would cost me $1,095.00. i read a recent blog that stated there had been about 19 similar complaints for this vehicle and that a recall would probably be coming soon from your agency. the cost of the repair is outrageous but more importantly if there is a serious problem with the power steering this vehicle should be recalled. *tr

Car wont start after sitting for several hours or it wont start after the driver display has gone haywire (showing errors, ac blows hot air, gas gauge goes to empty, unable to view your speed, etc.). *tr

Too many complaints to write them all up, here are a few: engine makes metal grinding whooshing noise independent from acceleration-dealer cannot replicate, warped rotors-dealer wanted over $1,000 to fix, have had radio replaced 5 times due to disc errors-dealer keeps replacing, had steering rack and water pump replaced at 30,000 miles-dealer covered, sensor that turns on lights went-dealer replaced, power steering problems, hard to turn and rough, but no lock-ups like others have had(thankfully)-dealer cannot replicate, had drivers side front panel sunroof drain clog, water soaked front carpet(3 inches of water)-dealer fixed but left me with a moldy carpet!, engine flutters/stutters to a start on random-dealer has no answer for me, trunk lid was scraping rear bumper due to latches being tightened wrong-dealer fixed, headlamp full of condensation-dealer fixed, car ridiculously bad in the rain and snow, stability control makes loud grinding noises and causes the car to buck, replaced tires with snow tires, still bad-dealer has no answer for me, large deep scratch across windshield right in the line of view from contour oem windshield wipers, dealer said too bad. those are just a few, i cant remember them all, this car is such a lemon. im sticking with toyota from now on! i learned my lesson! *tr

2005 pontiac g6 gt: within the first year of ownership, we had the vehicle into the dealership twice for a leaking panoramic roof. the second time it leaked, the dash shorted out. then at about 36,000 miles we started hearing popping noises when steering at low speeds. at around 42,000 miles the popping noises got significantly worse. it was at this point, we decided to take the vehicle back to the dealership for service. the man at the service desk seemed to know right away what was wrong with the vehicle without even diagnosing it. he told us that he had seen this problem in a lot of g6s. i asked him if it was something to worry about and he said no. he told me it would cost $550 to fix it and that the cost would be on me as i was out of warranty on mileage. after i returned home i decided to do some surfing on the internet to see if anyone else was experiencing g6 steering issues. i found page after page of people experiencing similar steering issues. in fact, i noticed that the nhtsa was even investigating gm for g6 power steering failure affecting some 176k vehicles. frankly, this scared me to death! so much so, that the very next day i went down to the local honda dealership and traded in the g6 for a 2008 honda accord ex-l (5-star rating). i took it in the shorts on the trade-in, but i cannot tell you how happy i am to get rid of this nightmare! parting question: since when is ?power steering failure? not worthy of a recall. shame on gm! *tr

My wife was almost killed yesterday when the steering locked up at 50mph+ while driving down the road. she has complained of steering issues/noises/control in the past, but never had it lock up completely. the car was still running, was difficult to stop, and she was almost hit by two different vehicles. this is the last of double digit issues with this vehicle. i will not take it back from the dealership. when the tow truck showed up the steering light went off and worked again. *tr

Car has had numerous problems from not starting to having the brakes replaced every 3,000 miles. dealer has been good about taking care of repairs and maintenance but i feel that this car has been nothing but a problem from the day i picked it up. i am at 27,000 miles and on at least my 9th set of brakes/rotors. it also has what i now refer to as the gm sputter start. if it does start it sometimes doesn't start on the first try and sometimes catches and sputters before it starts. hate this car. *tr

Automatic start on vehicle failed to work. took car to dealership, they stated they needed to order a part. when the part was in, returned to dealership to have it installed. left the location, the automatic start turned on the car. when i returned home that evening and was ready to go out again, the automatic start turned on the car but failed to remain on for more than 5 minutes. later on in the same evening, the automatic start failed to turn on the vehicle, but did turn on the lock lights. returned to the dealership where they stated the car started with no problem. left dealership and car refused to start by automatic start. returned again to dealership where mechanic witnessed the automatic start failure. they again tested it, and once again, the vehicle turned on for only a few minutes. the dealership said they spoke with technical support, and technical support advised it was probably cell phone interference. i'm apparently stuck with it working that way, however, i turned off my cell phone to start the vehicle w/ automatic start and it still failed to do so. *nm

When turning the ignition to start the vehicle, the vehicle does not start right away. it sounds like it does not want to start, or won't turn over, following which it does eventually start. it has not failed to start the vehicle as of yet, however it has done this several dozen times (probably at least once a week)since i have had the vehicle in the past year. i have mentioned the problem to the dealer, but they are never able to recreate the problem, so nothing has been done to fix this problem. *jb

Electrical. the information/radio/temp reading malfunctions and resets itself. the temperature reading will stay at 77 degrees for hours (when temp is other than that). while listening to a cd, and hitting the eject button - display reads no disc. radio will reset all stations and time. radio display will flash lines or not even come on at times. occasionally, in warm weather, on initial start up, rpm and engine will rev close to 2000 rpm. back lighting for comfort controls have changed from red light to orange. ** the electrical problems, in my opinion, go further than radio information, but apparently to the function of temperature control while starting the car - as stated in warm weather 85 degrees, it start as if temp is 20 degrees out. this has been in for service 3 times. two times the radio with the information display was replaced and another occasion the temp sensor was replaced. problem continues. *jb

My 2005 pontiac g6's driver's side sun visor had an electrical short which caused smoke to come from the headliner area. the dealership has had my vehicle since then and have been waiting for a part to come in. the dealer suspects that this is not an isolated incident due to them not being able to find a replacement part. i suspect that this incident could have started a serious fire. *nm
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - IGNITION
12/06/2005130007
Tl* - the contact stated that the steering seizes intermittently on his 2005 pontiac gt. the failure speed has varied, however, he could tell when the steering wheel was about to seize because the steering wheel would vibrate and shift to the left on its own. the failure mileage was 13,000 miles. the steering light would come on after the failure. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer a total of three times because of the steering problems. the dealer could not find anything wrong with the vehicle. the key became stuck in the ignition, the dealer replaced the ignition. the repair invoice did not state that the ignition was replaced. the vehicle operated without incident for 2-3 months. the contact is now experiencing the same failure. the contact has the repair invoices. *nm

Starter does not always function properly. sometimes the car starts other times it does not. it drags on kind of like a hard start. the vehicle was taken to my local dealership in february. waited clear until 09/08/2006 and gm had a program developed to get it fixed. guess what it did it again today on 09/13/2006. now my car goes back to the dealership to get looked at again. this is getting ridiculous. *nm
