STEERING - ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
PE07023GENERAL MOTORS CORP.04/25/200709/25/2007LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST
During this investigation, general motors (gm) indicated that approximately 15,600 model year (my) 2005 pontiac g6 vehicles built from november 3, 2004 through january 5, 2005 may experience a loss of power steering assist due to an insufficient crimp at the torque and position sensor transducer located in the steering column assembly. gm has indicated that it plans to send letters to the owners of these vehicles to inform them that it will extend the warranty coverage for the eps system in their vehicles to 7 years or 70,000 miles.statistical analysis of the failures in the population affected by the wiring crimp problem indicate that the problem is an early life failure that should occur within the terms of the extended coverage.gm's investigation of eps failures in the subject vehicles identified a problem with the connector crimps during the two month production range covered by the warranty extension.during this period the crimps may be asymmetrical, resulting ininadequate pressure on the wire that can lead to electrical noise in the signal from the sensor to the controller.the controller may interpret this electrical noise as a malfunction of the system and default to manual mode (i.e., turn off the eps system).if the power steering assist is lost, the driver information center (dic) displays a power steering warning message, a chime is sounded, andthe service vehicle soon light will illuminate.in manual mode the steering requires increased effort, especially at speeds less than 20 miles per hour (mph).odi's analysis of the failure data show that approximately 30 percent of the complaints and field reports (569 of 1913) involve vehicles built in the range covered by gm's extended policy, which account for only about 7 percent of the subject vehicle population.the complaint rate for the non-peak months is relatively high, at 673 per 100,000 vehicles.the rate for the peak months is 5 times higher at 3,645 per 100,000 vehicles.similar differences are evident in the warranty data, with approximately 27 percent of the eps warranty claims (1120 of 4145) involving vehicles built in the peak months.the warranty rate for the non-peak months is 1.5% and the rate for the peak months is 7.2%.odi identified 9 crashes that are potentially related to eps system failure in the subject vehicles.the crashes occurred at low speeds, such as driveway and parking lot type maneuvers.the crashes resulted in one alleged injury, but odi was unable to obtain information about the type or severity of the injury.none of the crashes involve vehicles built in the two month period covered by gm's extended warranty coverage.the subject vehicles use the same eps system as the my 2004 chevrolet malibu vehicles investigated by odi in ea04-018.although the failure rates are high in this investigation, particularly for the peak months, they are significantly lower than for the malibu vehicles investigated in ea04-018.as in those vehicles, the effects on steering effort are small at speeds greater than 15-20 mph.accordingly, this investigation is closed. the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist. the agency will continue to monitor complaints and information relating to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles and take further action in the future if warranted.

My electrical power steering completely locks up while driving, making it nearly impossible to turn my steering wheel. it has happened almost every time i drive it recently. it also makes my car shake and make clunking noises. it is in the repair shop now, but because there is no recall, i am expected to pay for the repair, which i am refusing to do. with the amount of complaints and the absolute danger of this problem, it is ridiculous that this car is not recalled and covered by pontiac. i will pay a lawyer fee to sue pontiac before i pay for repairs caused by their faulty engineering. *tr

While slowing for a stop sign, the steering alarm sounded, and warning light came on. after stopping at the stop sign, i proceeded across the intersection, and pulled to the curb. steering was very difficult. after checking belts and power steering fluid, i restarted engine and steering was fine..a second incident occurred two days later, but luckily i was in an empty parking lot. i turned off engine, then restarted and steering was functioning properly. knowing this will likely occur again, possibly on a curve, at high speed or in heavy traffic, it appears to be a serious, and possibly deadly defect. i will not drive this vehicle again until i can afford to have it repaired or find out if gm will fix their blunder.  I started my car this morning on the way to work as always. backed out of my drive way half into the turn lane and my steering locked up. my radio said power steering and i couldn't move the wheel without nearly all of my weight on it. i live on a main street so cars were coming by swerving to miss me at about 45 mph. i was already half in the turn lane to make a u-turn so getting back into my driveway safely wasn't an option. i was able to get help to push the car into the driveway; when i then turned off the car then back on the light was gone and it seemed fine. although i didn't risk driving it to work. knowing that this could happen randomly at any moment. does not make me feel safe in anyway shape or form. i understand that driving isn't all that safe to start with. but it's the other cars on the rode i should be worried about getting me in an accident not my own. *tr

Where do i begin!!! my g6 i love but apparently the electrical power steering goes out. so, with that being said you have no power steering. its is really hard to turn your wheel, on highway to get off an exit, pull in to park somewhere, make a tight turn, and try and pull out of a tight parking situation. i realize one of the ways to fix the problem is to get it fix (obviously outrageous price), or just turn the car off and restart that seems to work. so, apparently about 3-4 years ago gm realized this manufacture defect/recall but not a safety recall? i don't understand it but you know how big companies are never want to be accountable. ok, so in 2010 i receive this letter from gm about this loss of power steering but in the letter reminder it states the vehicle can still be steered in a safe manner but will require greater driver effort at low vehicle speeds or when stopped. ok so when you are on the highway??? i work alot and have to travel, and for personal reasons i travel a good bit. i have been very lucky when this defect occurs either someone with me to guide me through it or for some reason the highway is non busy and i can pull over (reminder 2 hands on the wheel with no power steering using all my arm strength to pull over) ok, so again this gm letter, so ok course after trying to jump some hoops i don't meet the requirements for this repair to fix by gm at their cost. that letter states vehicles with less than 100,000miles..yea ok, me i travel!!! crazy so i complain why not right. so, 2 years pass receive a letter from gm again about this power steering issue now 150,000ml..again!!! *tr

I was driving home from work yesterday afternoon and i came to a stop sign. my home is adjacent to that stop sign, so when i made a right from the stop sign to turn left in my driveway, my steering wheel locked on me. the street i became stuck on was 30 mph, and there were cars driving off the road because of it. a few of the people from the cars came to help me push the car in my driveway. my engine light came on, and the screen inside the car read power steering. i did several searches for this part to be replaced; they were well over a thousand dollars. i need help, and i need my car. i haven't had my car for a full year yet. *tr

My daughter was at a stoplight getting ready to turn and the steering wheel completely locked up on her. she couldn't turn it at all. she turned the car off and started it again and it seemed fine. the issue occurred a second time in february 2012. it was diagnosed at the dealer as having a power steering assist issue. the car had 120,000 miles on it at that time so was not covered under the 'special coverage' gm has for the steering issue. we did have the car fixed because we felt it was too dangerous for her to drive. it cost $684.

Vehicle was purchased in 2010 for my 17 year old son. we are the second owners. vehicle lost steering power pulling when my husband pulled into our driveway today. my son just confirmed this has happened several times but hadn't shared that with us before today. although thousands of complaints appear on record, with research concluding there is a problem, we did not receive notification of a safety issue, and no formal recall exists. for a newer driver, this is especially dangerous. please consider instituting notification of issues to all vehicles transferring to a new owner, and adding an official recall on the affected vehicles. we will pursue service regardless of the recall for personal safety.

This morning i woke up and decided to go to breakfast, luckily i was in the drive through when this happened. i was turning to go through the paying window and my power steering went out. i turned the car off and back on and it came back. when the power steering goes out you can't turn the wheel know matter how strong you are. i was lucky... lucky i wasn't taking an exit or turning at an intersection. i have read a bunch of power steering problems with my car which is an 05 pontiac g6 gt, and everyone is saying that gm doesn't see this as a safety problem. i could have caused a pretty bad accident if i would have been driving on the highway when it went out.

I was driving down the road at 30 miles per hour when my steering wheel started moving by its self, jerking back and forth. then all power steering went out of my car making it very difficult to steer my car. thank goodness, i did not have any sharp turns to make. this is a very dangerous problem and looking into the issue i have found that gm is very aware of the problem and has not made any attempt to remedy the issue.
12/09/201180000
I noticed that when trying to park my vehicle the steering wheel locks up. it is difficult to steer and appears that there is no power steering. the problem does not correct itself until you are going more than 20 mph. this continues to be an ongoing problem.

The steering on my car went out as i was going to turn on a busy street. luckily i was barely picking up speed. but if this had not been the case i could have easily hit two people that were standing on the corner or even traffic light post. there was no warning at all. except the beeping and then the steering going out. after the steering went out it was almost impossible to turn, i had to get help. this is very dangerous and the problem should be fix. i've read that this has also happen to other people and some even while driving on the highway. someone could get killed or they can kill someone!! this has to be fixed immediately! the car is under my husbands name, but i'm the primary driver.

While my pregnant wife was driving down the road the yellow light on the dash came on and the steering completely locked up. she had to stop the car in the middle of the road, turn it off, then turn it back on. the same thing has happened at least 6 times this week. this is completely unsafe and should be recalled immediately.

I have noticed that alot of people have been having problems with their 2005 and 2006 g6 electric power steering assists. i have two children and i was taking them to school when the power steering light came on. i could barely turn the steering wheel. i could not imagine if we were on the main road and i was going a little faster. i noticed that you did an investigation and closed it back in 2007. well i bought my g6 a year ago and did not know anything about this problem or about the additional 70,000 mile warranty for system failures even after running a carfax report. this is not an early life problem as my g6 has 114,500 miles on it. this was very scary. i think this is a problem that gm needs to fix with a recall. this is very dangerous and could cause an accident. it would be different if this was a cheap problem to fix, but we are talking about $800 to $1,000 to fix. that is ridiculous.

Yesterday while trying to pull into a parking spot, my steering column locked up and i could not control the vehicle. there was a steering column notice showing on the radio dash column. i thought if i turned the car off and back on again, the problem would go away. it didn't. i waited about 20 minutes before turning the car back on again to see if the issue had resolved itself. (this also happens with the engine light. sometimes in the earlier morning when it is cold, the engine light will appear upon first turning the vehicle on. i turn the car off and back on again and then the engine light disappears.) i immediately took the vehicle to the dealership. i was told that it was the sensor in the steering column and that everything would cost about $800 + tax to fix. my husband started researching this issue online to see what other owners were saying. i am really surprised that just about 90% of folks are complaining about the steering column, that gm is aware of the issue, and is not listing a recall. when speaking to the dealership, of course they made it seem like the repairs they have completed on steering columns were minimal. since i have had my car, i have had to have the intermediate shaft replaced twice.the steering column had to be greased once. every year my brakes are being replaced, and about twice a year, one of the two if not both tie rods need replaced. i have had to pay for four key fobs. my trunk leaks water. my front head light needed replaced as it leaked water. not cheap. i can go on an on with the the repairs but have reached my character limit. i feel like i got a lemon. would like to complain to someone in authority, but dealership is no help.

While on the road, my '05 pontiac g6 has more than a few times lost its power steering, as i was informed by the computer on my dash. it has happened at least 3 or 4 times. i have read online in public threads and forums that it has happened to many people and gm has still not issued a recall. this is a huge problem because of at least 14 reported crashes that have occurred from this problem. i have also read about people who have complained directly to gm and were told they would have to pay for a diagnostics fee as well as parts and labor to get it fixed. this is completely unacceptable and i do not believe i should have to pay for anything because i did not break anything or do anything wrong. if a recall is not issued i would like to at least be covered for any work that would fix the steering. or worst case a different vehicle option.

My car has lost power steering due to manufacaturer defect. 2005 pontiac g6 has a special warranty on its power steering due to problem. tsb (10183) reads: general motors is providing owners with additional protection for the loss of power steering assist caused by electrical input signals within the steering column assembly. if this condition occurs on your 2005-2006 model year pontiac g6 vehicle within 10 years of the date your vehichle was originally placed in service or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first, the condition will be repaired for you at no charge. after speaking with a technician he informed me that my power steering motor/module was faulty, but couldn't tell me if failure from input signals within the steering column had caused the problem or not. dealer refuses to replace motor and says it is not warrantied under the special coverage. however, if he cannot ascertain that faulty input signals had caused the codition in the power steering motor then how can he not warranty this part since the bulletin says it covers the loss of power steering?

2005 pontiac g6 power steering electric motor failure. the electric motor on the power steering randomly quits working. the steering randomly locks up at any speed, causing huge potential risk of a crash. gm has issued a tsb for this problem for vehicles under 100,000 miles only. what about everyone with more than 100,000 miles? this needs an official recall!

Purchased my g6 5/2011 with 34k miles. at 45k, slight 'clunk' noises began while steering at low speeds. gradually got worse. this vehicle has major steering issues that cannot be permanently fixed according to mechanics that haven't been told to keep this 'on the hush' by gm. gm knows about this problem and has recalled vehicles from other brands for safety based on this problem; however, has not recalled the pontiac's for reasons unknown. most likely because the brand is dead - so much for gm support of their products. i am discouraged because i love my g6, but do not feel safe driving it and am forced to feel very unsafe in a car that is otherwise quite safe. i have lost faith in gm, and that is sad being the son of a gm retiree of 35 years of service. if this issue is not fixed soon, i will never purchase a gm vehicle again. i was going to purchase a brand-new buick lacrosse, but now have to wait to hear what gm will do about the steering issue because i can sell my g6. if i will be forced to pay for the repair (which will not fix the issue, it will come back), i will be d***ed if i'm going to drop $40k on a new gm automobile. where is the commitment to safety? not at gm. approx. 52k miles - noticed steering clunking worsening, car began major steering drift & drag issues. began to be hard to keep car centered on the road. replaced tires & alignment to no avail. problem is said to be with steering. next, vehicle began to 'take' the steering wheel away from me while driving. while turning, wheel will unexpectedly jerk and turn itself. have experienced the wheel turning itself full 90-degrees immediately as i begin accelerating from a stoplight. have almost nailed cars next to mine because of this. have to be very mindful of the issue at all times. at 58k miles, i attempted to turn around in a small parking lot next to the road. turned in, and the vehicle unexpectedly jerked to the right - sending me through a fence and into a cement barrier. thanks a lot gm.

We own a 2005 pontiac g6. this vehicle has a chronic issue with the brake pedal sensor.when the sensor is having issues, it is extremely hard to get the car to go from park to drive. more importantly though is then the sensor causes the brake light to work in reverse. when you apply the brakes, the lights go off, when the pedal is not depressed, the light stays on. we have had several sensors replaced and now have been told the fix is the electical lubricant. this electical lubricant is only good for a few months. obviously, it is a half assed fix. we have been to several former pontiac dealers only to have been told we are out of luck. this is an extremely dangerous situation. while driving at night, if you depress your brakes and no lights come on it could lead to a rear-end collision.thankfully this last time my husband was warned of this event by a gal who was driving behind him. my husband has been pulled over by the police because they thought he was drinking. he was told that a characteristic of a drunk driver is that they ride thier brakes. gm needs to get this corrected!!! it is not safe. we purchased this vehicle for my husband who drives 50 miles round trip to work everyday. this is an accident waiting to happen. we are seriously contemplating trading in the vehicle for another one because of this and other issues with the g6. it has been a lemon since we got it between this brake issue, a clunking noise when turning (which we were told is nothing from our former pontiac dealers) and the panoramic sunroof leaking and noise issues, which as well we were told nothing can be done about. (we had standing water in the vehicle w/ the leaks) this brake issue needs to be looked at!!!! we will not buy another gm vehicle because of this crappy service and lack of care in getting this vehicle recalled. what is it going to take??? i have seen other complaints addressing this same thing. i would emplore nhtsa to see what can be done about this.

Today while stopped at a traffic light my power steering failed. a message appeared on the dic and then the power steering went out. i managed to turn the car into a parking lot. i shut off the car, and re-started and the power steering began working again. this was the first time for the failure, but i have read numerous complaints from other drivers about the same problem. the 2005 pontiac g6 gt has the electric power assist power steering.

I have experienced nearly a dozen near accidents as the power steering on my 2005 pontiac g6 gt fails randomly while driving. when driving, the wheel locks up and becomes difficult to turn. it happens approximately once every other week and has done so for the life of the vehicle. when bringing in the car to a dealership, the dealer cannot find anything wrong with the car because turning off the engine resets the issue, and the power steering works again. i have been ignored by pontiac since i bought the car new in january 2005. no dealer i have taken it to has been able come up with a solution.

Three days ago, i was driving home from indianapolis, 350 miles from home, returning from training for my new job. it was raining and all of the sudden, it felt as if my car was on ice, i couldn't control it at all. there was no warning at all. when i pulled over, i noticed that my front tires were bald, i bought them brand new two weeks prior. after driving carefully home, i took it into service. comes to find out that my whole steering column needs to be replaced, along with my 2 front tires. according to the mechanic, my steering gear box and everything was cracked or broken in half??? i apologize this isn't verbatum. i have read all these comments and complaints, but it doesn't seem that anyone is doing anything about it. does someone really have to die before the problem is taken care of? also, i never received anything from gm about any problems about this and there also seems to be no recalls for this. i also just rolled 100k miles, so if there were to be anything that gm were to do about it, it seems that it is too late now. this repair is going to cost me approximately $900. subsequently, it was friday the 13th.... i certainly pray that no one loses their life over the steering problems with these vehicles, especially since pontiac is no longer and gm took the bailout money. glad they can do that and pay their bills. this repair means my family doesn't get real food for a bit....

First problem, the exterior rear tail brake lights do not function well. i did find the recall and did take it in for repair. the problem still exist even after changing out the defected part. this is very scary and can lead to a serious accident. second problem, the power steering light comes on and service light, when this happens the steering wheel becomes very hard and difficult to steer. after turning the car off the steering wheel returns to normal. i have seen on different forum of complaint that have been made about this problem. i think this is very dangerous and can lead to an accident and deaths. this problem exist and not only in my vehicle but in many other of the same make. this is serious safety issue because the problem with the steering wheel becoming difficult to steer makes it impossible to control the vehicle. i am very angry because ever since i got the car i have been having a lot of safety issues with it, and as a student attending college it is extremely an inconvinenance. i have three years paying the car and have one year to go, this so unfortunate because as far as all the reviews the problem is never taken care of which would mean i would have to purchase another car.

2005 pontiac g6 v6 power steering went out with no warning.
01/16/2011
I own a 2005 pontiac g6 gt that i purchased in 2005. around 2007 was the first occurance of the power steering lock-up. i took it to the dealership and was told that it was an electical problem and a diagnostic test was performed and i was sent on my way. i regularly maintain my car and take good care of it. in the last year the problem has become worse (happened 5-6 times last year and again this morning) and i was told by gm that it is easier to file a law suit than for them to recall the car. this is very dangerous and very inconsiderate to their customers. what happens is, the power steering light comes on across the radio, the maintence wrench shows on the dash and the steering wheel locks up and becomes imposible to control. the car then has to be shut off and restarted to re-gain control.

Power steering light illumiated on message center, chimes heard and then a loss of power steering in my 2005 pontiac g6. everytime i turn on the vehicle the message appears when i am driving, and shortly there after a loss of power steering occurs. i have contacted gm and was told that there are no recalls regarding this. i have found several complaints on pontiac g6 owner blogs reporting the same issue.
12/13/2010130500
Took vehicle to gm dealer on 12/5/10 as have noticed a knocking/sticking in the steering when turning right or left. this has been a reoccuring issue since i have had the vehicle and i have had 2 steering gear replacements. have also noticed that the vehicle is often hard to turn. the dealer kept the vehicle for 2 days and stated there was nothing wrong, they could not diagnose the problem and the vehicle was safe to drive. on 12/13/10, while driving down the road, the warning light chimed and lit up on the console, the words power steering came up on the screen display, and the power steering completely went out. this was while driving at a speed of 40 mph. i could barely turn the steering wheel and it almost caused an accident as i tried to maneuver to the side of the road. i am extremely concerned that the dealer was unable to diagnose the problem and assured me the vehicle was safe to drive when obviously it was not. this is a serious safety issue as the steering wheel can barely be turned when this occurs.

This past saturday, i was driving my car and suddenly (and without warning), my power steering failed and i could not drive the car. luckily, i was able to turn it off and restart the car and that cleared up the problem for the moment, and i was able to drive home safely. this happened again the following monday. i have since taken it to my local dealership who informed me of the problem, that by they way, gm was well aware of. to make a long story short, even though gm has recalled other models (the g5 and cobalt for example) for the same issue, power steering assist, they blocked the national highway transportation from recalling the g6 models, and instead, issued a special policy that covers vehicles with less than 100,000 miles or 10 years. in my case, my car is over the mileage, though under the 10 years. i never received a notice from gm or my local dealership advising me of this potentially life-threatening issue. and now because my car is over the mileage that they cleverly set, i have to pay for this repair (between $700 and $800). i don't understand why gm would recall some vehicles with the exact same issue, but not others. i don't think this is the right way to treat loyal customers and gm should fix this free of charge for all affected vehicles since it appears to be a defect in their product. gm needs to rethink their strategy and aim to keep all their customers happy and safe. gm needs to issue a recall for all cars affected by this and issue refunds to anyone who has already had to come out of pocket to fix it. from what i've researched on the internet today, there are a lot of angry, worried customers just like me and that is really unfortunate. i love my g6, but i am not happy with this issue, nor with the unhelpful customer service i received from both gm corporate offices and my local dealership. my daughter's safety is #1!

Tl-the contact owns a 2005 pontiac g6. the contact stated that the steering wheel would not keep the vehicle straight. if she let go off the steering wheel, it would pull far to the left. beginning in january 2010, the power steering completely malfunctioned. she turned the vehicle off and restarted it; the problem seemed to correct itself. the contact called the manufacturer who advised her to visit the local dealership for a diagnostics test. the dealer stated that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. the failure continued on an intermittent basis. she took it to another dealership august 2010 where she was informed that the steering column needed to be replaced. the contact received a notice from the manufacturer stating that the steering was a problem (not a recall) and it would be repaired or owners would be reimbursed. when she called the manufacturer, she was informed that they would cover only 50% of the repair costs as her vehicle was over 100,000 miles. the vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. the current mileage was 106,102. the failure mileage was approximately 28,000-bk

Re: 2005 pontiac g6 (gt model, 3.5l v-6, 59,287 miles) experienced problems with steering, felt like steering was 'binding' or hanging up when turning at slow speeds or in parking lots. also heard a 'clunk' coming from somewhere in the steering column. previously attempted to fix the problem by replacing the lower ball joints (control arm) and the front tires. when this did not solve the problem the mechanic identified the flex coupler in the intermediate steering shaft was worn and required replacement. the pontiac g6 has a number of known issues relating to the steering, including this one. i believe it is unacceptable for a vehicle with less than 60,000 miles to require replacement of steering parts - this is a design flaw and should be considered for a recall to fix the problem at gm expense.

Approximately 4 times the powering steering symbol came up on dashboard along with locking my steering wheel while driving. two times reversing from driveway, one time as i was driving on my block, which thankfully is one way. last time, which is recently. i was on a main road the symbol and beep came on and my steering wheel lock as i was making a left turn. we called dealer and our vin # is not covered for recall, however there are recalls on previous models for the same reason. we will be going through our mechanic for further assistance.

I have a pontiac g6 2005 model and the power steering keeps going out. it randomly alarms that there is power steering failure, bings twice and then locks up. late last night during a storm i was on a main road, went to turn and the power steering alarm went off and the car totally locked up. two cars narrowly avoided hitting me, i have no idea how they actually did. this is a reoccuring problem with this car and yet when i take it into the gm dealer they have never heard of this problem. yet following my own research last night this seems to be a ongoing problem with this model. something needs to be done before someone is killed.

While entering the expressway on ramp the power steering locked up and i was unable to steer the vehicle for around 3 seconds which caused me to veer into the next lane uncontrollably. steering shaft has been tightened twice prior and replaced once already and feels like it is loosening again. the failure is now happening around once a week and will cause an accident if not corrected. the car now has 93000 miles, but the steering shaft problems happened before around 45000 and then again around 55000.

Urgent:my wife got into the car and started it. let the car warm up. she was taking our son to summer school. she put the car in reverse and then the chiming started. she looked down at the message indicator and it read power steering. on the dashboard, it had the maintenance indicator on. she turned the car off and then back on. the light and the message was gone. she felt like this might be a computer problem. she went and took him to school with no problems. today she got in the car, started it and began to drive the vehicle. once she got to the stop light and then began to go, the message and the maintenance indicator came back on. she pulled over and turned the car off and back on again. the message and the indicator was off. she started to come back home and it happened again. we only have 48800 miles on this vehicle. we were never sent a recall notice or what to do in case this happened. so my question is ...what do we do now? i heard about how gm had a recall on this vehicle. i am currently deployed overseas and this is the only vehicle that she has to drive currently. no one has ever contacted us about any recalls or anything else. being over in another country, i can not afford to be worrying about my wife and child in this car. what does she need to do?urgent

Power steering warning light keeps coming on and off. when driving power steering locks up and sometimes locks up upon starting the car. i have to turn car off and back on to reset it. gm issued an extended warranty for the power steering a couple years ago but it was only good for this problem til your car reached 70,000 miles and now that my car is over that they refuse to fix it even though the problem exists on most 2005 models.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 pontiac g6. while driving at approximately 50-55 mph and attempting a turn, the steering began abnormally jerking. the contact would continue to turn the steering wheel in order to correct the failure. in addition, when starting the vehicle she would have to continue to play with the key in the ignition switch before the vehicle would start. when driving at speeds of at least 60 mph, the vehicle would exhibit excessive shaking. the dealer replaced the rooters, tires, brakes and performed a wheel alignment. the dealer was unable to duplicate the steering failure. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 40,000 and the current mileage was 90,000.

Just recently my driver info center has been coming on intermittently saying that i have a power steering problem (electric). i've taken it to my mechanic and he had to call to find out what had to be done to correct the problem. he was told that a computer and module needed to be replaced in the steering column the cost being around $1000.00. as of yet i haven't had it corrected but if it continues i will have to have it taken care of for safety sake.

There have been several occurances i have had with the steering on my 2005 pontiac g6: steering issue #1: my steering wheel was easy to turn to the left but not right. shortly after it would begin it would correct itself: dealership resolution was to replace the control arms because they were binding up. steering issue #2 - after initial reparis, the problem was not corrected. upon return to the dealership they identified additional repairs that were necessary due to symptoms reported. dealership resolution was to replace the rack (4 times so far). steering issue #3: i had no steering power at all while trying to turn into a parking lot with no warning. i ended up having the car towed to the closest dealership. dealership resolution was replace the steering column and steering coil as it had snapped thus causing the sudden loss of steering. steering issue #4: my radio sounded a message that said power steering and i could not turn my wheel in either direction. this happened once while i was driving down the road and almost caused me to wreck into oncomming traffic and a second time leaving a parking lot. dealership resolution was to replace the steering column and electrical box to the tune of $1,000 which i cannot afford. my only saving grace is that this piece of junk is paid off in three more months which will not come soon enough. miles at time of last incident was 106,000 and 109,000 miles, current mileage is 114,000 miles. (2005 pontiac g6 purchased in july of 2006) i was disapointed to find out that pontiac recently recalled the g5 series of their vehicles for electronic steering issues and are aware of the steering issues on their g6 models. if this is the case, then why are they not recalling all models with known similar issues or atleast making the public aware of the issue. this problem deserves further scrutinity. did no one learn a lesson from toyota??? shame on you!

I have a 2005 pontiac g6 v6 that i purchased in july of 2008. i have had no major problems with the vehicle other than steering issues. there were a few occurances where the steering was extremely easy to turn in both directions, but no drastic problems. after those few occurances, i had about 7 instances where i had no power steering turning the wheel to the right but power to the left. about a week after this happened my radio sounded a message that said power steering and i could not turn my wheel in either direction. this happened while i was driving down the road and almost caused me to wreck into oncomming traffic. i have been told by several individual people as well as pontiac dealers and auto part stores that this is a common thing with g6's electronic steering. pontiac recently recalled the g5 series of their vehicles for electronic steering issues and are aware of the steering issues on their g6 models. if this is the case, then why are they not recalling all models with known similar issues or atleast making the public aware of the issue as these are the issues that cause wrecks.

Driving an 05 pontiac g6 on the freeway around 65 mph and the power steering went out all of a sudden. i swerved into the other lane and would of hit someone if another car had been there. very dangerous to have power steering fail and highway speeds. reading on the internet, this is a common problem for g6's and should be recalled and taken care of so no accidents occur.

While driving my 2005 pontiac g6 on an interstate the morning of march 30, a notification of power steering suddenly appeared on the radio's display area and thereafter, my power steering cut out. i was capable of driving the car to my destination without the power steering. after turning off my car, and turning it back on, the power steering system was fine. after a quick internet search, it seems that this issue has been experienced by many other drivers.

When i turned into the parking lot at work this morning the power assist on my 2005 pontiac g6 locked up. i couldn't turn the wheel at first - the power steering light came on the instrument panel and on the message center it flashed power steering. luckily, no other vehicles were around and i was able to strong arm the vehicle into a spot. i turned the car off and called my son. he thought it was the battery. i turned the car on and everything had returned to normal. when i got to work i got online and noticed that this was a problem in the 2005 g6s but no recall has been made on it. in august of 2009 when i took my car in to have the 60,000 service performed the mechanic asked me about the noise with the power steering. i told him i did notice a clunking sound when i turned. he advised me that some dealerships were fixing the problem without charge. i called around and found that wasn't the case in my area. what does it take to get a recall for this? i see that some of the g5's have been recalled -- i am now afraid of my car and have no means to buy a new one.

2005 pontiac g6 power steering failure. 64k miles on car. no injuries or crashes yet. turning car off and restarting allows the power steering to work again. diagnosed as bad steering sensor which requires a replacement steering column for $800. gm has refused to cover as a safety issue.

I have a problem with power steering cutting out randomly on a 2005 pontiac g6. this happened mostly last summer and for some reason stopped as it got colder. it would happen as i would start the car, or sometimes as i was driving or as i was arriving at a destination. the power steering went out about every day, sometimes a few times a day. to correct the problem, i would have to restart the vehicle, sometimes several times to get it to work correctly. when it went out, the warning light came on, as well as a noise to alert me, and power steering would flash across the information panel. i have had this car for just over a year and spent all of last summer with the problem. no one was hurt, though when the power steering would go out while i was driving, i would have to find a place to pull over, which was difficult when the wheels would lock up and the steering wheel was very difficult to turn.

The power steering goes out suddenly. i was driving down the street one morning and had stopped at a red light. when i acclerated once the light turned green, the power steering light came on and it was hard to steer the car. i had to shut the car off to reset, and it worked fine. problem continues to occur, especially when just putting the car into motion at a low speed. i took the car to my mechanic and he could not find anything wrong with, despite having him in the car once when the power steering went out. i heard on tv that 2006 and up models were recalled due to steering. but i have been unable to find any information out about 2005 models and why it was not included.

The power steering on the 2006 pontiac g6 is malfunctioning terribly. when you make a turn you lose power and have to fight not to hit another car. it's very frustrating. there have been recalls on the g5's but not the g6's and i want to know why. this problem need immediate attention before someone gets hurt.

It is a 2005 pontiac g6, the steering pulled hard left when my wife started a left turn from a stop sign. it pulled the steering wheel right out of her hands, it is lucky there was no other traffic. i had done a check and it would steer to the full stopping point if you just touched it in that direction. but turning to the right it was difficult. after checking all of the obvious like tires, tyrods or for damage i tested again and it all worked fine. a week later it started doing it again but you could hold it straight. i got off the freeway and when i would shut the car off and restart it would be fine. lasted about another week when we were traveling about 50 miles from home it did it again but this time we got the message on the read out saying power steering and restarting it would not reset it. we drove it home in manual steering. called the dealer in rention wa. and the one in puyallup and they said that they have not heard of any steering problems. i took it to the puyallup dealer and they troubleshot it to the steering column. we got it replace at a cost of over $800 because our warranty was up. now i am hearing about all of these other reported problems with the steering on these models. i feel that if a person was not paying a great deal of attention that this could cause serious problems. please check into this before someone gets seriously hurt.

Power steering failed on my 2005 pontiac g6. vehicle resulted in an almost severe crash on the interstate. after searching online i've found that there is a limited recall on this part!!! that is insane. also, my 2005 is not covered! i could have lost my life on the hwy due to a manufacturing issue that should be covered free of charge. after repair attempts my power steering is still inoperable. *tr

The power steering on my 2005 pontiac g6 gt experiences intermittent failures. steering becomes extremely difficult with possibly a complete lack of power steering function. the steering goes out mostly at slow speeds and it unpredictable. in order to restore power steering function, the car usually has to be restarted. power steering replacement was looked into, but at $600+ for a problem that is clearly a manufacturing issue (see recent gm recalls), i do not want to pay for something that should be fixed by the manufacturer. *tr

I was altered on my radio alarm system to check power steering. the warning went away the next time i started the car. then a month or so later i was driving in town when my power steering went out completely. it was very difficult to turn corners and i fear what would happen if i were driving fast and it failed and i did not know it had failed again and i needed to move quickly out of the way of on coming traffic. i took it to a gm dealer and they said it was a sensor on the steering column. the power steering was working again, but they said it would be best to fix it which meant complete replacement of the power steering column. my car has 66849 miles on it. also, my ignition will not come out of the ignition about half the time. the repair to the steering column did not fix this. the cost of the steering column repair was $697.46. the repair was done last weekend (february 19, 2010). now gm has a recall out on 1.3 million vehicles with this same failure, but they do not list my car a 2005 - g6. what's up with that!! *tr

This is in regards to the gm recall that was announced today for loss of power steering. the article caught my eye as we own a pontiac g6 that experienced the same exact conditions described in this article. i recently had the car fixed in the last 5 months but had to pay for the repair. when i originally took the car in for the warning light that came on, my car repair guy advised me at the time that gm had a technical bulletin on the issue-#07126- and gm had extended the warranty repair to 70,000 miles and told me to take it back to the dealership, stating we should have been notified of the issue so the car could be repaired. at the time i had my car repaired the car was at 76,000 miles. after negotiating with gm, i only had to pay for half the repair due to the bulletin that was out and i had a copy of the bulletin. why is the g6 not affected by this recall when it has the same issue. *tr

In late 2006 i purchased a 2005 pontiac g6. in early 2007 i was driving and my steering locked up. after it locked up it became very loose, as in you could turn the steering wheel and the vehicle would not change direction. i took the vehicle to the closed dealer and was told that they had to replace the entire steering column, which they did at no cost to me. i have had numerous other problems with the vehicle, such as brake problems, catalytic converter went out, etc. i still owe $11,000 on this vehicle and it only has 60,000 miles on it. just last sunday, 2/28/10, i was driving on the freeway with my 18 month old son in the car and my steering failed. the car started beeping, the display read power steering and the steering completely failed. i turned the wheel to pull of the freeway but the vehicle would not turn. it was not hard to turn as gm claims but completely loose. i took my vehicle to the dealer and have been told that the power steering motor and module need to be replaced and that it will cost me $1,200. i am a single mother and do not have the money to continue to pay for a vehicle that i am scared to have my son ride in. so what happens if i do somehow come up with the $1,200 they advise this will cost to get it fixed, then what? it fails again? i can't trade it is because the car is worth less than half of what owe. i contacted pontiac and they inform me that my vehicle has not been recalled so they will not pay for the repairs. any advise? *tr

My complaint is in reference to # pe07023. on 2/19/2010, i began to receive issues with the power steering of my pontiac g6 2005 gt. the steering became overbearing to the point where i could not turn and was stuck in the middle of traffic. i turned my car off and waited about 5 minutes and restarted it . at that point i was able to move my vehicle and being driving again. after being extremely frightened i made home and began to do research on this issue. i found numbers of complaints about the same problem along with your website. i find it hard to believe that gm has not filed a recall on an issue that is so dangerous. i understand that they were going through bankruptcy but at whose expense? i have not gotten my vehicle fixed yet due to money issues. however i did not expect to have to get something so major fixed on a vehicle that is only 4 years old. i was not offered a warranty on my vehicle when i purchased and now i think i know why i have had nothing but problems from this vehicle from day one.. electricity, battery, brakes just to name a few. currently toyota is undergoing major issues and gm needs have a bit of that lime light as well. i feel for any one who is experiencing this issue with their vehicle as it is dangerous and scary personally leaving me helpless. i pray for any one who has not gotten this problem fixed as i wish there is not any more accidents pertaining to a simple fix by gm. is it cheaper to have law suits against you or fix the 100,000 vehicles that are under this investigation. *tr

Driving car to work, on i-285 getting on ramp to i-85 north in atlanta, ga. while on the ramp i felt the steering wheel tighten, the service light came on and info panel indicated power steering. i turned on my caution lights and got off the highway and managed to get to the nearest gas station, thinking that i simply needed some power steering fluid to get back on the road. to my surprise, i have an electric power steering system and there is no fluid to add. furthermore, the power steering issue went away after restarting the car. this apparently is a widespread issue, as nhtsa did an investigation on this problem before (http://www.aboutautomobile.com/investigation/2005/pontiac/g6/electric+power+steering) and concluded that the case was closed. this is a dangerous issue as if the car decides the power steering system is malfunctioning, its quite possible that i could be in a dangerous turn, unable to gain control of my car before heading into a concrete wall or oncoming traffic. i request that nhtsa look into this issue again as a $1000 repair is simply not fair for known defects on automobiles. *tr

I have taken my car into the dealership due to the steering wheel being tough to turn at times. i received a letter in the mail from the dealership saying there may be a problem with the steering. however, when i took it into the dealership, they told me that there was nothing they could do to fix the car unless they could physically see that the steering was acting up. just yesterday, i couldn't turn my car without using two hands to tug on the steering wheel. it wouldn't turn without fighting with the car. this is not the first time this has happened, and i am at the point where i want to sell the car because there are too many problems with it. i have had this problem with steering so many times. what will it take for the dealership to fix the car? do i have to get into an accident before they will fix it or recall it, because i am not paying for something that i complained about when i had the warranty. i am now over the miles for a warranty. another issue that i have reported to the dealership while under warranty was the car won't start. sometimes i turn the key and it won't start. it takes several times before the car will actually start. this happens frequently. it's several times a week. it is unreal that i can't get into my car and start it without having a problem. i have reported this issue to the dealership and again was told that nothing is wrong with the car. i have reported several other issues, but the dealership refuses to help with anything. there are so many issues with the pontiac g6. i wouldn't recommend this car to anyone unless all of the issues are corrected. *tr

I was driving my car to go get lunch and pulled up to a stop sign and bell went off and i could not steer my 2005 pontiac g6. i pulled into a saturn dealership which was the first right turn off the busy road i found myself on. it took two people to turn the wheel and i had to park sideway's in three spots. i went into the dealership to seek assistance and had one of the porters drive the car back to the service area when he reported the issue had resolved itself. after talking with a technician, he recommended that i wait to have it serviced to see if it was a momentary blip in the computer or if the problem presents itself again. i agreed but decided to do an internet search on my car, make and model only to find numerous complaint's of the same issue with power steering failure in the '05 and '06 model. what makes me even more upset and disgusted is that posting after posting all over the net state that gm knows the steering is failing and posted a bulletin in 2007 stating there was a problem but never bothered to send out any communications when i would have been well within the warranty. now i have 102,000 miles on my car and am looking at an $800 - $1000 repair unless i junk this piece of crap. in addition - my car has had a lengthily service record that is quite disappointing. i have had a new fuel system including fuel pump, fuel lines, solenoid (sp?), four steering racks, two sets of control arm's, a steering column, steering coil, steering gear, stereo/cd player, tail lights, ignition and window clips to make them stop screaming. this has been the biggest disappointment since the vw beetle of '03. and we wonder why no one wants to buy american anymore...gm here's your sign. *tr

2005 pontiac g6 with 68,000 miles. the steering column was replaced at 56,000 miles due to hard, and erratic steering. the steering has in the last day become hard to turn, and takes excessive force to change direction. i have parked the car until the local dealership can get it in for diagnosis. i see that there are a large number of similar complaints. i strongly feel that this is an inherent, and dangerous situation, which could be life threatening . *tr

I have a 2005 pontiac g6 gt. last week when i was turn on the off ramp i completely lost power steering. the light came on stating power steering, and my service engine light came on. i was able to steer the car to a gas station though it was extremely hard. i bought some power steering fluid, but to my surprise my car has electric power steering so there wouldn't be a fluid i could fill. when i turned my car back on the lights were no longer on and my steering was fine. today - about six days later - i was pulling off the off ramp and the same problem happened. this time i could barely steer at all. i pulled over, shut my car off and turned it back on and it was fine. i have been looking online and i see that i am one of hundreds of people with this problem on this car. i am going to have to get this fixed because this could be a life or death problem, after reviewing all the other customer complaints i feel gm should recall all of the 2005 and 2006 models that may have this problem. thank you *tr

While taking a right turn driving to work the power steering in my g6 went out causing the steering wheel to lock up sending me into oncoming traffic. i luckily was out at a low traffic time and was able to avoid being hit by another vehicle. the steering after that point was possible but extremely hard to manage and sharp or quick turns would be impossible. i reached my destination which was close and turned the vehicle off. when i restarted the engine the power steering alert that had flashed on my radio was off and the power steering seemed normal again. after researching i've learned that this has been on ongoing problem and i can expect that it will happen to my car again without warning putting me in danger while driving. *tr

I was dropping my 2 kids off at school this morning when i heard the warning signal come on and i looked and seen power steering in the information window on the stereo and a little car on the dash. i noticed that i was not able to turn the steering wheel. i was able to drive the car to be looked at and when they looked at it they did not see anything wrong with the car. so i had them change the oil and check all of the fluids and as they took it for a test drive it did the samething to him. they took it back to the shop and put it on a machine and could not find anything wrong with car but they know that something was wrong. the person at the front desk did some research and found that there are a lot of people who have the same issue. i would like to know when they are going to put a recall out on this problem or are we going to have to wait until someone gets killed before anyone takes action. i am just thankful that my children were not in the car and i did not hit someone and get hurt or hurt someone else. please do some research and see all the complaints on this issue. *tr

The steering column in my 2005 g6 gt is making a horrible clunking noise when the wheel is turned either left or right, this is an ongoing problem with the pontiac g6 and it seems to be getting worse by the day, i began noticing this clunking about a month ago (june 2009) was sitting at a stop light turning wheel left and right when i noticed this noise. nothing has been done yet to fix it and i haven't had any accidents yet, but this car has been nothing but a headache since day 1, not to mention very expensive to repair, i currently have 56,700 miles on it. i feel that this should be taken very seriously, if this part of the steering locks up at random driving it or not, who is to say someone won't be badly injured or killed. *tr

2005 pontiac g6 lost power steering without notice. indicator light came on dash after this occurred and stated power steering on the information screen but no warning. because the vehicle was unable to be controlled the vehicle went into the oncoming lane in traffic on a curve, narrowly missing oncoming vehicles. this is dangerous!!!!! gm pontiac has not issued a recall for this even though they state they have offered a courtesy gesture to extend the warranty to 7 years / 70,000 miles for the power steering component. this is serious and must be considered for recall. gm has admitted there is a problem--obviously if they have issues a courtesy bulletin--yet no owners have been notified--we do currently receive any recall notices but nothing in this regard. this could have caused serious injury or death and needs to be investigated immediately. *tr

My power steering light had been coming on intermittently for the past few days. yesterday while leaving a parking garage the power steering light came on. i continued driving and as i went to turn the wheel, the power steering went out while making a left turn (5-8mph). i nearly ran into a pillar in the parking garage. i turned the car off and back on and the problem went away, but the power steering light stayed illuminated. after searching the internet for some time, i came across hundreds of similar problems. a few of the same problems occurred while people where driving on the interstate which could have been deadly if someone would have been going around a turn or just switching lanes. i just don't understand why there hasn't been a recall to fix this problem. the car industry want us to stick behind american made products but are unwilling to fix potentially deadly problems until the inevitable occurs and someone losses their life because of a problem they know about. maybe that's why many are buying quality made foreign made products. over the five years i had the car i have had numerous problems this car has been a money pit. the hood latch broke, the power window motor went. the rotors have to be replaced more often than i change the oil ( that's ridiculous), the bearings went bad, the six disc factory cd player stops working and sticks constantly, the blower for the heater and ac only works on high, the panoramic sunroof leaks which has caused water to accumulate in the trunk and now their is a mildew smell ect......... *tr

Owner of a pontiac 2005 g6. i have had it in to the dealership in the past to work on a knocking noise in the steering column. during hotter months the knocking noise is more active. i have had it in at least twice to the dealer to deal with this. the last time it was serviced they claimed it was the i shaft. it was lubed and repositioned. there was also noise from steering gear. the gear was replaced and set toe in. as of this last friday, june 12th, i was driving home from out of town and the power steering message showed up on my console. i figured there must be something wrong with the fluid and had my son get the booklet out of the glove box. the power steering was drastically tightening up. this startled me since it involved navigating traffic and getting it off the road especially since i also had my son with me. we pulled off the road and could not locate a specific area for putting in power steering fluid. the car was taken to the pontiac dealership. we were told this was a computer issue with the car - there is no hydraulics - and that the steering column must be replaced for $750.00. i, too, am filing my complaint with nhtsa today for the safety of families when in transportation. this has been a huge inconvenience to us especially when the car has been in for service for the same similar reasons that others are filing their complaint! when i read that others as well lost power to others, this highly concerns me! i am also not satisfied that without a recall, only a replacement part my be used to fix the problem until an actual recall is ordered and the actual problem is fixed. this means i will still have to worry about driving my vehicle and be cautious of the problem happening again. this is not a suitable alternative for the consumers who have purchased these vehicles! *tr

Problem with 2005 pontiac g6. steering column and power steering rack has a popping noise and occasionally power steering acts like its is going out. this is an on going problem with these g6's. despite the fact that pontiac is now filing bankrupt, something should be done to help those who cannot afford to buy a new car to have the problems with the g6's resolved. this occurs every single time the vehicle is driven only getting worse even after replacing the rack and pinion and numerous trips to a mechanic to try to find another solution. g6's have faulty steering/chassis serious problems know to causes accidents as i'm sure some have already been reported to nhtsa according to other internet comments on the g6's. thank you for taking the time to read this complaint. *tr

Well it all started for my stupid purchase of a ?!@#$% car, i have had numerous problems with this car costing me tons of money. 6 times i have had to replace my rotors and my brake pads because of a jolting shaking feeling with this car and i was told that the rotors are warped and that they need to be replaced. they never changed the rotors all they did was mill them down, 3 times they milled them down and the problem kept coming back until my warranty ran out they said your on your own. sometimes i try to start my car and it will shake and put and die out and then it i will try it again and it will start, but i have had my car not start back up 2 times and had to get it towed and fixed and all they said was it was a dead battery but this happened 2 times with in a year and it still happens now. i started my car and started to drive and my steering wheel would violently jolt it self to the left and the right and it actually hurt my wrist from this and then the car died out and had to pay for towing and problem was a dead battery is what they said. passenger door some how filled up with water and caused all my electrical to go haywire in my car and showing door ajar over and over again and it would go off causing my interior lights to not go off, my flood lights wouldn't work, cd player and radio only work when they want to work now, and some of the lights in the car go on and off when they want. power arm in my car has been replaced 2 times already costing me a fortune and it needs to be replaced again, wonder if that has to do with the shotty rotors and brake problems. after revealing this to gm all i have heard back from them was to take it in a get a diagnostic test which i will have to pay for and then they might do something about it. dont buy any pontiac cars, the warranty only means if there is a problem they will do nothing to fix it and when warranty is up your on your own. still haven't had anything resolved with this vehicle. *tr

We own a 2005 pontiac g6 which we bought new, and my wife drives the car. it's been a good car. but, when it was new pontiac had to fix a clunky steering problem after only one year (under warranty). 59k miles, and 4 years later, the steering clunk returned. it only clunked when the car was not moving and when you turned the steering right and left. when moving it didn't do it. however before the clunk sound started again, about two months before to be exact (at 56k miles), the car was steering oddly on the road. it would shift to the left and right quickly, following ruts and making the car hard to keep on the road. it was a genuine safety hazard, but my wife didn't say anything to me about it. on flat roads it was okay. when i drove her car and discovered the steering problem i went nuts. very unsafe situation. i called paul masse pontiac in woonsocket, ri (where i bought the car) and asked if it was safe to drive the car and they said it was. still, we had them repair the steering wheel ($400) last week. what they told me was the crash extension (telescoping) part of the steering shaft now has a nylon bushing to keep the smaller extension shaft in place and lubricated. now the car's steering has no clunk and it drives straight, even on rutty pavement. the way it had been driving was, in reality, was a safety issue and i plan to call my friends at paul masse and complain. i believe the steering on the pontiac g6 is a national safety issue, particularly on the earlier cars. *tr

I have had a problem with my electrical power steering on my 2005 pontiac g6 gt. it first started with the steering tightening while making a stir. i thought nothing of it. but three days ago the power steering was completely gone. i thank god i wasn't on the freeway. i could have caused a horrible accident. i managed to take it to a shop and suggested replacing the power steering fuse. that wasn't the fix. i contacted a gm dealer and they said i would have to pay $100 to find out what was wrong. also i will probably cost me anywhere to $350 to $500 to fix the problem. i went online and found several complaints from over the past few years dealing with the lost of steer power with the g6. some cars were brand new. according to the posting several people have contacted gm corporate with the same complaint, but with no success. this is clearly a safety issue that has to be addressed by gm. these cars need to be inspected. this could result in casualties. please can anything be done to have gm to issue a recall on the power steering system? i found a website that has several complaints like mine. the site is www.carcomplaints.com. *tr

I previously posted a complaint about having a defective intermediate steering shaft in this car that's causing a clunk sound when turning at low speeds. i contacted a local dealer (frank kent in ft. worth, tx) to see if they had this part as i do not consider it safe to continue to drive the car without being repaired. they indicated that they do and also advised me that a safety recall had been issued for this same part in gm trucks and suv's. why when this is obviously a severe problem in all gm vehicles wasn't a recall issued for all their vehicles using this same part? i hope to hear from an investigator soon as the person who answered my call today couldn't provide me with the answer to this question. *tr

After 64,000 miles on a 2005 pontiac g6, i started hearing a clunk noise after turning steering wheel and while driving on expressway over 50 mph, my steering wheel vibrates. it feels as though the steering wheel is loose and something is about to come apart on my car. i went to a mechanic to get new brake pads and he stated that the vibration and steering noise was because my ball joints were bad. i handle this car extremely well and can not understand why ball joints would be bad so soon. he also stated that after trying to find parts, only the dealer sold them and they were a whopping 215.00 for each side of car. my warranty expired and this is going to be an out of pocket cost. it also seems that i have to keep replacing the brakes and rotors often. additionally my power steering light comes on sporadically making it hard for me to turn the wheel. *tr

Pontiac sent a letter regarding the loss of power steering. as of today, the steering in my pontiac g6 has been repaired 3 times, the gas cap has been replaced at least three times, and the radio has been replaced 5 times, 3 of which have been in the past three weeks. i se an investigation was opened regarding the steering in 2007 and i see no results of the findings. the issues have been persistent for about a year and pontiac dealers refuse to test for electrical issues. i have been going round and round with the pontiac company for three weeks with no solution. the car has been in the shop for three times in the past three weeks. please help. i see other customer complaints regarding the 2005 pontiac g6 and others seem to report the same issues. i no longer feel safe driving my child around in this car and pontiac doesn't seem to want to resolve the issue. *tr

I have loss of power steering intermittently, this occurs mostly at low speeds but is occurring with more frequency as of late. the car also is starting to shake around 60mph, the tires are one year old (replacement tires) and the alignment was done when it was completed. i went back and they double checked the alignment and said it was perfect. i am afraid that the steering issue will occur at higher speeds while either my wife or i are driving it, causing an accident. this is clearly a safety issue and should be resolved, not by simply posting a tsb but by posting a recall for this issue because of its severity and potential cause for personal harm. *tr

Ongoing noise in power steering shortly after purchasing the g6 new in 2005. there's always been a clunk when turning right or left at slow speeds (ie: parking lot). two different dealers have determined (until now) that the noise is normal. the noise level has increased over the past 3+ years and now at 40,000 miles the intermediate steering shaft needs to be replaced. i'm hoping the extended warranty will cover the $450 repair job. *tr

I own a 2005 pontiac g6 which i purchased from a dealer after it had been leased for 1 year. the vehicle had 12000 miles on it when purchase. numerous problems have occurred with this vehicle after purchase. starting with a noise, clunk in the steering. this has been in the repair shop for upwards to 7-8 times, each time new repairs done on different parts. this problem has never been resolved. now at 64500 miles the noise is still there after repairs only 4000 miles ago. starting in october of 2007 i began having problems with the brake lights and cruise control. brake lights working only sporadically as well as the cruise control. there has been documented repairs on the is of 7-8 times as well. this problem also has never been resolved. on september 17, 2008 my car was involved in a rear-end automobile accident in most part and no doubt due to faulty brake light system. many other problems have occurred with this vehicle as well including poor sunvisor manufacturing, leaky map lights in overhead console, rapid wear of brake pads and rotors, rapid tire wear, starting drags when starting, occasionally the car will not shift out of park when the car is running and brake pedal is applied. *tr

Purchased this car new april 9, 2005. my car first went to the garage with steering problems on august 23, 2005 with a current mileage of 3,704. the car was towed after the power steering locked up and i maneuvered several curves and a hill to stop on the side of the road. my car remained in the garage until 8/27/05 and now had 3,716 miles on it. i drove my car for a few days to have the same problem occur when my husband was turning the steering wheel to make a left turn. on september 6, 2005 we again called for our car to be towed back to the garage. car now has 3,899 miles on it. this time they replaced the steering column assembly with motor. mileage upon return was 3,948 miles. now in september 2008 my car has a little over 38,000 miles and i am having what the dealer tells us is a different problem and will be our expense. we are having a popping noise in the steering in the front end. the dealer tells us this is possibly the steering shaft assembly. this is ridiculous that this car is so unreliable and it seems the same problems are continuing with gm cars even in 2008 models. i think that gm should be offering to purchase our vehicles back the same as i have recently heard a friend say that toyota did for them at a percentage over the current value of the vehicle. different from gm they have taken responsibility for their problems. it seems that gm is denying the problems with their vehicles. i have already researched the lemon laws. maybe more owners should do the same. gm should do something about this problem before someone dies with the major steering problems they have. also another problem we have had is that the information center displays are effected by the outdoor temperature. *tr

I am the owner of a 2005 pontiac g6 four door sedan . for the past two months the engine check light has come on along with a warning on the audio display showing power steering. these incidents were infrequent and no particular reason was found for the warning. up until last week i attributed the problem to a faulty sensor. last week i started my car and the check engine light came on, the power steering was displayed in the audio system, and i had no power steering to for the vehicle. i turned the vehicle off then back on and the problem was gone. on saturday 08/30/2008 while driving on a straight road the warning lights came on again and i lost power steering in the car again. i pulled to the side of the road, turned the car off then back on and the problem was gone. on 09/03/2008 i started my car and the warning lights again came on and i again had no power steering. i again turned the car off then back on and the problem was gone. i then drove to red hoagland pontiac in bradenton, fl for repairs where i was told two modules needed to be replaced and it would cost me $1,095.00. i read a recent blog that stated there had been about 19 similar complaints for this vehicle and that a recall would probably be coming soon from your agency. the cost of the repair is outrageous but more importantly if there is a serious problem with the power steering this vehicle should be recalled. *tr

I purchased my car in july and the very same day my dad was driving it and said that the steering wheel jerked out of his hand as he was turning a corner which resulted in him driving into the oncoming lane. i drove the car right after him and had the same issue, the steering wheel doesn't lock, it feels as if someone is pulling it in the other direction. took my car to the dealership where it sat for a few days and they said they couldn't get it to do it for them so they gave it back. few weeks later i was driving my car down the highway and it was giving me tension while i was driving in a straight line. every time i turn i have to brace for the wheel to jerk out of my hand and use all of my body weight to pull the wheel back. my car is in the shop now and they are telling me that the whole steering column needs to be replaced and needs to be re aligned. this is a very serious problem and if it had happened in the winter there would have been an accident for sure. *tr

My pontiac g6 2005 had extreme power steering issues. the power steering over a period of 4 months would go in and out. whether on the freeway or on local roads. when money was available to repair, the car was taken to a pontiac licensed dealership. after analyzing the problem, the servicing team said that the complete steering column had to be replaced because the problem (electric power steering) was within the column. with labor and replacement of entire steering column the total cost for the repair came to $806.80. the mechanics did say after 70,000 the problematic power steering going out on g6's made in 2005 begins to occur in the car and the replacement of the steering column in alot of instances needs to be replaced entirely. *tr update (10/7/08): loss of power steering assist made it very difficult to turn the steering wheel. the power light initially did not come on. as the problem became more frequent, within the two weeks prior to the repair, the warning light began to light up. since the repair (steering column), i have not had a recurrence of this problem.

I took a lease over of a 2005 g6 less than a year ago. i have had nothing but problems with it from the very beginning. a lot of times it doesn't start just sputters repeatedly. took it in to get it checked out of course they say they can't find anything wrong. right after we got the car we had to have the brakes replaced and also there was a clunking noise. had to have both right and left front struts replaced. clunking noise still had not gone away, everytime i take it in i complain of the clunking and eachtime they say it is due to something else that needs to be replaced. have had a pulsation problem when brakes applied. power steering went on it quite a few times, had it replaced and has done it since. the rearview mirror snapped right off when being adjusted. visor cover snapped off. door lock knob snapped off. most of the work we have had done was covered by warranty. the warranty is now up and the right ball bearing now needs to be replaced which is why i hear clunking is what i was told. how come it is always something different causing the clunking noise? is going to cost around $500 to fix. what a piece of junk. we will never buy another north american made piece of jun again!!! *tr

I have a pontiac g6 2005 that i have had since april 2005. starting this year i noticed a rattling sound coming from the steering. i found a tsb (technical service bulletin) about it stating it was a lubrication problem. the problem with this where the lubrication was need you had to take the steering apart to lube it. what? in other words the warrant would not covered this problem because it was a lube problem. great engineering. just starting this month (december 2007) i have noticed my steering has been really tight turning at slow speeds, for instance, when leaving my driveway, and increasing in frequency. i stumbled on this website and became curious and found that so many g6 owners have had the same symptoms and needed the same fix. i have a very good question, your steering gives out while driving, is this not a safety issue? how is it that this is not a recall problem yet? is because no one was killed yet? it appears the sensor is a serious issue and it needs to be recalled, before someone is killed. *tr

2005 pontiac g6 gt: within the first year of ownership, we had the vehicle into the dealership twice for a leaking panoramic roof. the second time it leaked, the dash shorted out. then at about 36,000 miles we started hearing popping noises when steering at low speeds. at around 42,000 miles the popping noises got significantly worse. it was at this point, we decided to take the vehicle back to the dealership for service. the man at the service desk seemed to know right away what was wrong with the vehicle without even diagnosing it. he told us that he had seen this problem in a lot of g6s. i asked him if it was something to worry about and he said no. he told me it would cost $550 to fix it and that the cost would be on me as i was out of warranty on mileage. after i returned home i decided to do some surfing on the internet to see if anyone else was experiencing g6 steering issues. i found page after page of people experiencing similar steering issues. in fact, i noticed that the nhtsa was even investigating gm for g6 power steering failure affecting some 176k vehicles. frankly, this scared me to death! so much so, that the very next day i went down to the local honda dealership and traded in the g6 for a 2008 honda accord ex-l (5-star rating). i took it in the shorts on the trade-in, but i cannot tell you how happy i am to get rid of this nightmare! parting question: since when is ?power steering failure? not worthy of a recall. shame on gm! *tr

My car had a power steering failure on november 17, 2006. my wife had picked up the car from the dealership, and while attempting to pull out of a parking lot, the steering locked. when she let go of the steering wheel, the wheel turned left to the stop without outside input. she was able to get the car back to a parking lot, and the car was towed back to the dealership and a steering gear replaced. on 11/28/2006, my wife picked up the car, and on the way home, the steering locked while she was driving. she drove off the road, hit a curb and scraped a telephone pole, rendering the car undriveable. gm sent a technician to assess the problem, and determined that there was no failure of the power steering, despite the first hand information supplied by both my wife, and the tow driver stating that the power steering was locked and the wheel would not turn. *jb phone interview update (march 12, 2007): dealer thought the steering pull was caused by the rack and pinion unit and replaced it. the steering lock-up afterward and the vehicle crashed. dealer service manager found fault code c0545 from the computer. gm issued a tsb to address that fault code.

My 2005 g6 gt is equipped with electronic power steering and it randomly failed while driving down the street. check engine indicator light illuminated, power steering was displayed on the console, and all power steering was lost. luckily i was coming to a stop at a traffic light or else this could have been more catastrophic at high speeds or in a turn. pontiac issued a bulletin stating that they have identified an issue and should only bring the car in for repairs if the problem has occurred. this logic is utterly ridiculous. should a car company require you to have a near death experience before they accept that a dangerous defect exists in their product? steering column being replaced now but skepticism is high. *tr update (10/14/08): dealership replaced the entire steering column and corrected the loss of power steering. the rack and pinion unit was replaced twice and the intermediate shaft was lubed once and replaced once, but they were just making noises and did not result in loss of power steering.

Power steering had been feeling very loose for a few days, then all of a sudden the power steering completely failed while i was driving. the steering wheel locked up and the display noted power steering. i almost crashed into another vehicle when the steering completely locked up. i initially looked to see if i needed power steering fluid, which i could not find. i then looked on the internet trying to find out where to put the power steering fluid finding out that the vehicle has a hydraulic power steering system and does not take power steering fluid. upon my research into where to put the power steering fluid i saw an article indicating that there is an investigation into a recall in this regards. at that time i took the vehicle to the dealer because it is still under manufacturer warranty. the dealer still has the vehicle and is replacing the entire steering column. *tr

I have a 2005 pontiac g6 and are having problems with the power steering as well. the problems first began around july 07, when i would pull my car out of the drive way the steering wheel would automatically turn to the left and would veer left while i would drive. this problem made it difficult to steer straight and make right hand turns. it wasn't everyday that i had this problem but it would happen several times just out of the blue. the problems didn't end there, the power steering eventually went out as it did with everyone else filing a complaint. the first incident was when i was driving home from work on the highway and the check engine light came on, followed by the steering wheel completly locking up on me and the words power steering popping up on my radio. this completly worried me because i had my baby in the car with me and didn't know what more would happen. this is completly dangerous and should be fixed. and i don't mean at the expense of the owners, because with more than 40 complaints and im sure more out there, there is obviously a problem here. *tr

I own a 2005 pontiac g6 gt. in june, as i was driving home on a state hwy., i noticed my steering wheel became extremely loose. as i turned a curve in the road, i completely lost my power steering. the icon on the dash came on and the message power steering showed up on my menu screen. fortunately, i was able to get my vehicle home. it was a struggle to turn on the side street and into my driveway. the next day when i started it up, the steering was fine. i drove it in to work and called the gm dealership. when my husband went out to drive it to the dealership, the steering went out again. as long as it was driven slow, it was difficult but manageable. the dealership first re-calibrated the torque sensor. that worked for a few days. we then had to take it back in when the steering went out again. at that time, they replaced the power steering motor assembly costing $444.13. that worked for 2 months and then it happened again. this time i was almost rear ended. it went out and i was trying to turn onto another street. it was extremely difficult to manage the turn. i had to slow way down. when i did the car behind me came very close to hitting me. i was fortunate nothing happened. we took it back to the dealership and they said they would need to replace the torque sensor. this is located in the steering column and would normally be approx. $600+ to fix. since we have always had the car serviced there and had this same problem just a few months earlier, they offered to repair it for $100. so far it works. *tr

About 7 months ago i noticed a significant decrease in power assistance for the steering while i was parallel parking. i had taken it to the dealership to get it looked at ,and they told me that they couldn't duplicate the problem so they did nothing. this continued for another 5 months and it progressively got worse. then the starter stopped functioning properly, and the starter got replaced. then the headlights and heat/ air conditioning blower began dimming when coming to a complete stop along with the power assistance going away. so i took it the dealer, and they said they couldn't duplicate the problem. i took it to a different dealership. this time the alternator was replaced. thought that would do it, but a couple of days later the power steering problem came back. took it to the dealership, and they couldn't duplicate the problem. so they gave me a data loggerhead record the problem. it happened while i was driving, so it pushed the button and recorded the problem. took the data logger back, and i haven't heard back from them since last week when i took it back. this car was a nightmare and unsafe car to drive.*ak
