| Gm notified the agency by letter dated january 28, 2009, that it will conduct a safety recall of pontiac g6 vehicles built from january 3 through january 31, 2005.vehicles produced during this time period have shown a highly elevated incident rate of improper operation of the brake lamps. odi opened this investigation after receiving reports that consumers would use their brakes and discover that the brake lamps would not illuminate.also, consumers report that the brake lamps would illuminate when the brake pedal was not applied.odi's review of the complaint data finds that the complaint rate for the january 2005 production is 20 times greater than for the remainder of the subject vehicle population.likewise, the warranty rate for the january 2005 production is 11 times greater than for the remainder of the subject vehicle population.in its letter to the nhtsa, general motors (gm) explained that the primary cause of this brake condition was fretting corrosion (oxidation) of the connector pins on the body control module (bcm) that connect to the to the brake pedal position sensor (bpps).the corrosion prevents the bcm from receiving the correct signal voltage from the bpps.in december 2008, gm released technical service bulletin (tsb) #08-05-22-009 to provide technicians the correct repair procedures for subject vehicles that experience improper illumination of the brake lamps.this action taken by gm is sufficient to resolve the issues raised by this investigation. | ||||||

| My power steering column went out while i was trying to turn into my apartment complex and i almost side swiped another vehicle. i lost all power steering. i went to the dealership and got the problem fixed for $700 and with in the time of the part warranty it went out again. it is now 4 years later and it just went completely out again. i know for a fact that there are hundreds and hundreds of 2006 pontiac g6 owners that have experienced the same problem. this could end up being fatal for someone in the right situation. also when you call to speak to gm about the problem they brush it off as if they have never heard of it before which can not possibly be the case if there are so many people complaining of the same problem. *tr | |||

| The pontiac g6 has a faulty power steering system that needs to be addressed. there should be a reinvestigation into this matter. this is a dangerous defect. while it is extremely difficult to drive at low rates of speed it will randomly take off to the left or right while driving at normal speeds. extremely dangerous when going around curves. mine took me off the road and into the median. also, it went out while driving through the parking garage and i nearly crashed into a concrete pilon because the steering wheel was snatched out of my hands when the power steering assist failed. this is car is very dangerous contrary to the previous investigation. this car needs to be recalled. | |||

| Vehical started to make a clunking sound in the brakes and every once and a while having difficulties removing it from park. shortly after these problems started the cruze control stopped working. little did we know that the brake lights were working in reverse all this time! when your on the gas the brake lights are on when you hit the brakes the brake lights go out! this is incredibly dangeruse gm has issued a recall for this same issue for the 05 g6 model but none of the others, a simple google searcdh shows how common this is with the g6 line from 05-09! we would have had no clue this was going on if i haden't foolowed my fiance one night and noticed it other wise we would have found out when some one hit us due to the poor breaks or computer of the pontiac g6. | |||

| This pontiac g6 was taken to dealer on three occasions for the same complaint. 9/23/2009. the first occasion, the vehicle's cruise control did not work and the gearshift was very difficult to move out of park. on one occasion the car had to be left at work site as gear shift could not be moved until the next morning. last, several people told me that brake lights were on while driving and turned off when applying the brakes; all the symptoms of the recall #09v036000 second occasion: it was taken to dealer again 6/20/2011 for the same symptoms the dielectric lubricant suggested in the recall was applied both times and complaints cured. third occasion: the vehicle is going into dealer 6/11/2012 for the same complaints.. | |||

| As i was pulling into work, my car dinged three times, then power steering was flashed on my radio and my steering wheel locked up! unable to drive my car, i had it towed to a mechanic and the estimated repairs would cost $900! this is a horrible car, as this is just one of the few problems i am having with this vehicle. every time i turn the steering wheel, something in the steering system is making it clank, and when i turn the wheel back it will clank again. if i am at a complete stop and have my hands off the steering wheel, when i apply the gas, the wheel will pull itself about half a turn to the left and as i pick up speed it will recenter itself. when i turn the wheel there is also a grinding noise. the struts have gone bad, which is $450 more, and there is a leak in the front left tire somewhere (not the tire itself, the mechanic told me it was leaking oil somewhere). this is my first gm car, and it will most certainly be my last. | |||

| Electronic power steering problem. while driving, a power steering warning appears on the radio screen. after the warning, 3 tones sound inside the car. then, the steering gets very tight and all power steering goes away. this is a very dangerous situation while driving at highway speeds. the only way to correct the issue is to turn off the car and restart it. this problem can lead to serious accidents when power steering is lost. please report this issue to gm and require a recall before more serious injuries, or death, occur. | |||

| I have a 2006 pontiac g6 that has faulty steering. i was going around a turn at 45mph and my steering gave out and i couldn't move the steering wheel as i was going around this turn. thank god there was no one coming the other way, otherwise it would have been a serious accident. several occurances happened like this and my mechanic can't seem to find the issue. on a website called g6 owners forum, i was reading through different people's experiences and there are hundreds of people dealing with the same issue with different years. i have also read that there was one death involved with this very issue and many injuries reported. i really think gm/pontiac needs to step up to this issue and schedule a recall to protect the owners of current gm vehicles. | |||

| The electronic power steering stopped working and the power steering light came on in the radio. after i shut the car off and restarted it, the steering working again but it soon failed and went through the process of restarting car to get it to work. it seems to do it more when the steering wheel is turned all the way to the right. it now does it frequently and the car steers so hard when it happens, it would be easy to loose control and crash. pontiac says this is not a safety recall and they will not honor warranty on my car. nhtsa did investigate this under action number pe07023 but pontiac still states it is not a safety problem. i disagree and feel pontiac should correct this prior to an accident happening. | |||

| The brake lights on the vehicle come on randomly while driving. this causes the lights to be inoperable while depressing the brake pedal. i have been in several close calls for rear end accidents. stopped by the police on 2 separate occasions. also this is the exact problem that gm has in the 2005-06 pontiac g6 brake light recall notice. i have had the vehicle serviced under recall 2 times now. the fix lasts approximately 3 to 4 months, then the exact same, extremely dangerous, brake light and cruise control issue returns. when the problem occurs the cruise control disengages at random also. this has caused many nerve racking situations when cruise control disengages in traffic while traveling up a hill. gm's fix of applying dielectric grease to the connector is a band aid type fix and is not a remedy for this extremely dangerous recall issue. the newer model g6 vehicles do not have this issue, making it obvious that gm saw a need to fix the problem in house. this problem has been occurring for 4 years at minimum. the car currently has 89k miles and i am the original owner since new. i keep the car in immaculate mechanical condition. this defect needs to be fixed in the correct manner before somebody loses a life. | |||

| I have recently did a tune up on my 2006 pontiac g6 just plugs and plug wires. when my wife told me the car locked it steering wheel upon a quick take off i then drove the car again and also had two lock ups with me. after that happen to us we never really do any fast takeoffs with the car. this happen 3 times in the month of january. this only happens with a takeoff and all the panel lights act like they turn off with all gauges drop in off position, but the car still running. im not sure if this is part of the defect, but for the past 9 months this car has been real hard to start up and no lights display for a check engine. i have taken this car in for a computer diagnostics test and nothing was found to be wrong with the car. the dealership told me to get a new key and i did and it didn't help. *tr | |||

| The car was purchased from auction in april of 2006. i have had the car three years now. from the time that i purchased the car i have had problems with it starting. it will turn over but dies immediately after it starts. it usually take three tries before it will start. today i got in my car and turned the key nothing would come on, no lights no radio no noise nothing. i thought it was the battery. i tried it three times and then on the fourth time it started like normal. i checked the battery and it is fine. i have had it in the service department three times for this issue but because it would no do it at that time they could not determine what is wrong with it, the diagnostic test did not show anything. the service airbag warning also keeps dinging. i have taken it in and they reset it and said it was ok, now it keeps doing the same thing but it is not covered by warranty to have it serviced. i have had trouble with the powersteering also. there are times it will be extremely hard to turn and then in a few seconds it is extremely easy and now in the last few months i have had problems with the brakes. the brake pads were replaced two months ago and about two weeks after they were replaced they have started making a really loud squeaking noise and sometimes a grinding noise. not sure what needs to be done since the brakes were just maintenance. the car has been very dependable but i am afraid that it will not stay that way for long. *tr | |||

| I was driving my 2006 pontiac g6 down the street and all of a sudden the power steering went out, i was unable to turn the car in any direction, this caused traffic to get backed up and me and my 1 year old stuck in the middle of the street, the car had to be towed to the nearest dealer where they then stated that my power steering is electrical and it has went out and to repair it they would have to change my rack and pinion which would cost over $800 to repair, which i don't have at this time, needless to say i am still unable to drive at the present time, i believe that this is recall worthy seeing that the car is only 3 years old, i also have heard other complaints about this same thing, please help! *tr | |||

| I purchased the 06 in may 2006. in less than 6mths time both key fobs and the trunk release in the car stopped working. the dealership said they had the problems fixed, but the problem persists. also, the car is hard to crank at times. it happened often in the past, but eventually stopped. then on yesterday i had to 3 times to start my car before it cranked. then today, i had to try 2x before it cranked. something really needs to be done. i'm glad to know i'm not the only one experiencing this. gm should take note and accommodate everyone who has purchased their product. i'm not sure of the dates i began having trouble starting the vehicle, but it has occurred numerous times since i've had this car. also, i've had to have my brakes replaced and it hasn't been close to a year and they are making a squeaking noise already. *tr | |||

| Tl*the contact owns a 2006 pontiac g6 gt. while driving the vehicle off the dealer lot at approximately 2 mph, there was an electrical failure with the power windows. in addition, the cell phone charger fuse continued to blow out. the dealer stated that they would make repairs under warranty. there was bubbling in the paint job that was also repaired under warranty. whenever the vehicle is started, the stereo changes from xm fm to am. the screen for the xm radio is blank, the clock is always behind, and the fuel gauge never works properly. it is difficult to tell exactly how much fuel is in the vehicle. the engine ticks periodically and it sometimes stalls upon starting. the nuts in the door loosen every two weeks and make a loud clunking sound when they are coming loose. there is also something wrong with the power steering. the failure mileage was 20 and current mileage was 18,000. update 09/10/08 *cw the power steering failed and was replaced, but it still was not right. the drive shaft began to unusual noises. updated 09/10/08. *jb | |||

| When i first purchased the car it only had 10 miles on it and within the next 6 months it would not start and had to be towed to the dealership 3 times. the first 2 times i was told that there was some loose wiring or that the wire was to close to a component and the component melted the plastic covering the wires. the third time i was told there was a problem with the security information but, it was corrected. then at 40,000 miles the car started jerking whenever i drove it. it seemed as if the gas was not getting to the engine quick enough (i'm not a mechanic) then the mileage went considerably down. for a full tank of gas i used to get 451 miles this is told through the fuel monitor that is in the car. but, after this began occurring the monitor would state 239 miles after i filled it up! i have had to fill-up 6 times in 2 weeks. when a tank of gas used to last 2 weeks for me. i went to the dealership that i purchased the vehicle from and was told that i am no longer under warranty so they would have to charge me to diagnose the vehicle. once they diagnosed the car they stated that it was the catalytic converter and the would replace free of charge and that i would not have to pay for the diagnostic test either. while i was ecstatic to know that they were going to fix my vehicle at no charge to me, warning bells did sound off immediately. when i received the invoice back from them it stated that these items were replaced: oxidation catalytic converter, 2 gaskets, 1 pipe and 2 manifold core chg. and after all of this work which took from 8:30a.m to 2:00pm, my mileage monitor is now reporting 300 miles for a full tank of gas when originally i was getting 451. after reading all of these complaints re. this vehicle i am just disgusted. i will review this site when purchasing my next vehicle which i think will be pretty soon. *tr | |||

| It rained really badly and all of a sudden i heard the horn on my car going off continuously. once the horn starts sounding other issues occur: *automatic shift to lock does not engage *have to push the lock button twice on the remote car key entry device in order for the car to lock *if i want to lock the car from the inside and have all four doors lock, i cannot have the key in the ignition *if the car is running and i push the lock button, the driver's side lock pops back up *when i cut the car off but leave the key in the ignition i normally can still hear the radio, but when this happens, i can no longer hear the radio; if i do want to listen to the radio but not crank up the car, there is a pinging noise as if i am getting out of the car and leaving the keys in the ignition because of all of this, when i got in the car, the information center shows door ajar or open. *tr | |||

| Every time it rains or gets extremely cold my car has several problems. it starts usually with the head lights going out, turn signals not working, dash lights working randomly, air bag lights saying they are off and on at the same time, windows not going up and down, radio and time resets itself, seat belt sensor goes off when seat belt is on, air bag staying off when 180lbs is in the seat, hard starting, long starts. these are the problems that i have had since i bought the car in december of 2005, it has been to the dealership 8 times for these problems. again today in the dealership for lights not working. dealership keeps telling me they can not get the car to duplicate the problem. i keep telling them it has to be cold and wet, not keep in doors. *tr | |||

| First leak was the xm antenna. water came in through roof center console lights. second leak was from the sunroof water entered the cabin through the same place. dealer repaired sunroof drain tube. third leak was the sunroof drain tube. dealer repaired the other sunroof drain tube. the water enter the cabin and ran on the passenger seat belt. this happened in the winter and the seat belt froze solid in the retraction reel. at the same time the water also damaged the airbag sensors in the passenger seat and caused the an airbag failure. the forth leak soaked both seat belts. this time the dealership extended the sunroof drain tubes per a service bulletin. now there are intermittent electrical problems with the car. the heads lights would not turn on until the car was turned off then restarted. the turn signals, instrument cluster lights, and heater control lights stopped working intermittently. of course they worked fine while the dealership had the car. *tr | |||

| I bought a 2006 pontiac g6 with only 6,000 miles on it, after a few days of driving it, i noticed something was wrong with the power steering. it would go completly out and in my information center it would say power steering, then other times it would get very loose to where i would have to pull off the road and turn the car off and restart it. i took it to the dealership, where they kept it overnight, called me the next morning and said they found nothing wrong with it, mind you this happens on a daily basis. i told them to keep it longer. pontiac called back and told me to come pick it up, that they could not get it to duplicate, therefor could find nothing wrong. a week later it goes out completly again, in heavy traffic with my daughter in the car with me, i almost wrecked my car. i immediatley pulled over and called the dealership back, i was told that if i didn't like there service to take it elsewhere, so i did. they had to replace the whole elctronic system in my vehicle. now at 9,600 miles the problem has resurfaced again. *tr | |||

| My electrical system in my pontiac g6 gt has been having trouble. the first sign of trouble was my window switch quit working, which was replaced, but after researching i found that this is a common problem. the second incident happened a month ago, my power steering failed as i was turning a corner. this then proceeded to happen numerous times, when i was going between 0-40 mph. i had to shut off the car, then it was okay (no power steering light came on). the electrical chip was replaced. third incident, power steering light starting coming on and steering was harder to control (but not locking up). i am very concerned that this is going to be an ongoing problem with the electrical system in the g6, and i am even more concerned for my safety and when the warranty is finished. pontiac needs to look into these failures and take the steps to ensure the consumers safety. *tr | |||

| I purchased my pontiac g6 gt in september of 2006. shortly thereafter, i had to return it to the dealership because the horn would not work properly. it was replaced. 6-8 weeks later, it was back at the dealership for another horn replacement. then, the starter sounded like it was hanging up, like it would not disengage after the motor started. so, i took it to another dealership, but they could not duplicate the problem and simply reset the computer and returned the vehicle to me. 2 months ago, i noticed that the cruise control was not working. a couple of weeks later i discovered that my brake lights were staying on. i took it to the dealership and a module was replaced regarding the brake lights and cruise control. the next week it was back at the dealership for the same problems. 2 weeks after the return, guess what! it was back at the dealership for the brake lights staying on and the cruise control not working. i got the car back last week, and over this past weekend, i noticed that the cruise was not working yet again. not only the brakes/cruise, but the starter started hanging again and now the drivers' side heated seat comes on and cannot be turned off!!! my car has been at the dealership since tuesday and pontiac says that they will not offer a buy back because the problems are electrical and not mechanical! i guess i will just wait on it to catch fire! *tr | |||

| I had several types of electrical failures with this vehicle. the first one was a check engine light and was reset by dealer with no codes found. the next was low coolant warning that was a defective wire and repaired. another time the vehicle simply would not start and had to be towed to the dealer. after filling vehicle with gas the dash panel was completely out, vehicle ran normal. dealer was aware that no instruments were working and was unable to detect the problem, no codes found. dome light never worked and was unable to be fixed. in december i stopped for a red light in traffic and smelled melting or burning plastic and seconds later a small cloud of fowl scented smoke entered the cabin of the vehicle. i shut the vehicle off and tried to restart the vehicle when the light turned green and the vehicle would not start. i called for roadside assistance and waited for the tow truck . when the tow truck arrived the vehicle started smoking from the engine compartment and then caught fire. the damage was not repairable. at the time i was certified pontiac retail professional and as of new years day had not been given a rental vehicle under the warranty. the manufacturer has not been the least bit helpful in the situation and as a result i have since left my job as a gm sales professional. gm will not provide a rental vehicle while they drag their feet to identify the root of the problem. i have waited until new years day to file this complaint to give gm ample time to resolve the issue. *nm | |||

| I have a 2006 pontiac g6 that i am leasing since 11/1/2005 and since august 2006 i have been having numerous problems with the battery and engine on and off. then finally on august 21, 2006 i went to go start it and it was totally dead. it was towed to the nearest dealer and they had to replace the battery which started leaking battery acid into the engine. about a month later in mid september 2006, i was running errands and went to start my car to go home and it was dead. i was at a store and had to get it towed again to a nearest dealer. there they found it was a wiring harness chafe around the starter motor and also concerning the air conditioning lines and that caused a few fuses to blow. as of today november 28, 2006 i am still having issues with starting the car and the dealer cant find whats wrong. the car just turned one year and shouldn't have these issues. i had to go out and buy a portable jump starter becasue this car is so unpredictable. it has been back and forth to the dealer 3 times in 2 months and i am tired of it. *nm | |||

| I bought this car on 4/12/2006. the electrical system has a problem so when the passenger rolls down the power window the driver can not put it back up. on 6/29/2006 i took it in for this and they put grease on my windows and they replaced the drivers side window switch. it worked for 2 days and then it stopped working again only this time the passenger seat belt warning stopped working as well, so on 7/8/2006 i took it back and they replaced the drivers side window switch again and repaired the wires to the warning for seat belt. now here we are it is 7/17 and it quit again on friday the 7/14/2006 so i called and this time they told me they are keeping it indefinitely and the lady who made my appt. said i should consider renting a car. i argued that for as much money as i spent on this car i should not have to, so they agreed to pay the rental. my concern is this; things keep happening with the electrical system what if it causes a fire or worse an accident with me and my 3 kids in it. *jb | |||

| Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle was parked for a period of several days, but after turning the ignition, there was the strong odor of something burning. further examination revealed grayish black smoke erupting from the center console near the floorboard. the contact pulled up the panel which revealed no obvious fire, but more smoke. after the removal of foam insulation block from the console, flames were visible. the fire department was contacted to extinguish the fire. the emergency operator instructed the contact to the turn off the ignition. while doing as instructed, the flames touched the contact's arm resulting in minor injuries. meanwhile the flames engulfed the vehicle which was deemed a complete loss, there was extensive fire damage. police were on the scene and a report was taken. afterwards, the fire inspector determined the fire was electrical in nature. | |||

| When driving check engine light and traction control light will come on, driver information center will show message reduced engine power and car will slow down significantly and not go over 45 mph. additionally cruise control will not work. if turned off remote start will not work and vehicle restarts with check engine light on and runs rough. usually next restart check engine light will be off and will run better. vehicle will have burnt smell when parked in garage after incident. computer is storing error codes but dealer can not diagnose problem. dealer indicates software error prevents them from getting information about vehicle at time when error codes were recorded. in shop 3 times and they can not figure out, wanted me to use a data recorder but when they tried to show me how to work it the recorded did not work. this has happened 3 times, 2/9/2006 on i95, 2/20/2006 during in town driving(only disabled remote start and burning smell), and 3/4/2006 on a country road. *jb | |||

| I purchased a 2006 pontiac g6 in sept 05, in dec 05 i went to go to work on a monday and the battery was dead. i had not used the car the day before. my son jumpstarted it and i took it to the dealer the next day. they couldn't find anything wrong with it. two weeks later it happened again and i had the car towed. the dealer said that the battery couldn't hold a charge and they replaced my battery. in feb 06, the car battery was dead again, i had it towed again. they couldn't find anything wrong and told me that i don't drive the car enough to recharge the battery. i drive my car between 17 to 20 miles a day. they recharged the battery and two weeks later it was dead again. the dealer talked with gm tech support who also agreed with the dealer that i don't drive my car enough. they also checked the electrical system and the parasitic draw and they all are fine. once again they recharged my battery. one month later in march the battery was dead again. the dealer followed the same procedure as before and told me that gm tech support says there is nothing wrong with my car and no further tests will be done. they agreed to let me come in and have the battery tested every once in a while. approx two weeks later the battery was tested and it was failing so they replaced my battery again. i continued to have my battery tested until the end of april. i didn't have another problem with it until july 06 when the battery was dead again. i had it jumpstarted and brought it to the dealership the next day. they checked the battery and the electrical system again and found nothing. all was well until nov 06 when the battery was dead again. i had it towed to the dealer and again they recharged the battery and checked the electrical system. the dealer only keeps the car overnight and has not tried to figure out what is wrong with the car. the car starts normally with no problem and then the next day the battery is completely dead. *nm | |||

| I purchased a new 2006 pontiac g6 in jan 06, at 3000 miles the car was in the dealership service center with low coolant, it's been in the 2 times since and is going back for the same reason 10/16/06. total this car has been in the service center 7 times including this trip. this will be the fourth time for coolant leak. 1 for an electrical shortage, 1 for a pinched brake line, and 1 to repair items the service center left undone. 7 times in the service center in 9 months, wow sounds as if something may be wrong huh? i have contacted the gm 800 spoke to 5 different reps they seem to be of the opinon nothing is wrong with it. | |||

| I am having problems with my vehicle starting. it doesn't happen all the time, but i've had the car jump started 3 times. at other times it will take several times before it will crank. i've taken it to the dealership and they cannot find anything wrong. they told me i would have to have it towed the next time it happens instead of having it jumped. i wouldn't mind doing this depending on where and when it happens. although the dealership states they haven't had problems with this vehicle. i found numbers complaints at edmund.com and other websites. *jb | |||

| I have a 06 pontiac g6 w/ 20k miles. at 4k miles it went to the dealership for a cd player problem. now i have more problems. 3 weeks ago we went to use the vehicle and the battery was dead. it was towed to dealership and batt. found to be bad. last monday 29th we found the battery to be dead again so it was towed back to te dealership again. once again battery was bad and replaced. then we had been noticing problems with the fuel range, mileage and low fuel light. you would be driving and the gas gauge would say you had 1/4 tank left and 39 miles to empty. you drive a mile and the gauge is on empty and it says low fuel!!! the dealership says no problem found, working as manf. built then it would say you have x amount of miles to empty then the number would jump up and down. took to dealership who said. no problem found, working as manf. built. i picked it up from the dealership and it said 206 miles to empty, i drove a half mile and it said 180 miles to empty. then drove a quarter mile and it said 193 miles to empty. this was under normal speeds and acceleration. my dealership finally refused to work on the vehicle so i took it to another dealership who said cannot duplicate the problem so i dropped it off to have the oil changed. come back 15 hours later and the battery was dead. towed to the dealership again. they replaced the battery again. i picked it up once again and the fuel mileage said 142 i drove a half mile and it went to 130 i drove a quarter mile and it said 126 miles and then i drove 700 feet and it said 116 miles. i drove it back to the dealership and when i stopped i had 131 miles to empty. this car has been in the shop every day since monday the 29th. *tr | |||
