Gm notified the agency by letter dated january 28, 2009, that it will conduct a safety recall of pontiac g6 vehicles built from january 3 through january 31, 2005.vehicles produced during this time period have shown a highly elevated incident rate of improper operation of the brake lamps. odi opened this investigation after receiving reports that consumers would use their brakes and discover that the brake lamps would not illuminate.also, consumers report that the brake lamps would illuminate when the brake pedal was not applied.odi's review of the complaint data finds that the complaint rate for the january 2005 production is 20 times greater than for the remainder of the subject vehicle population.likewise, the warranty rate for the january 2005 production is 11 times greater than for the remainder of the subject vehicle population.in its letter to the nhtsa, general motors (gm) explained that the primary cause of this brake condition was fretting corrosion (oxidation) of the connector pins on the body control module (bcm) that connect to the to the brake pedal position sensor (bpps).the corrosion prevents the bcm from receiving the correct signal voltage from the bpps.in december 2008, gm released technical service bulletin (tsb) #08-05-22-009 to provide technicians the correct repair procedures for subject vehicles that experience improper illumination of the brake lamps.this action taken by gm is sufficient to resolve the issues raised by this investigation.

 The office of defects investigation (odi) has received 212 reports alleging that the brake lights do not operate properly on model year (my) 2005-2009 pontiac g6 vehicles. complainants allege that the brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal has not been depressed, or the lights do not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed. in addition, the cruise control may not engage, or will disengage unintentionally. brake lights that are not operating properly may not warn a driver in a following vehicle of the braking status which could lead to a crash.in september 2008 odi opened a similar investigation into allegations of brake light malfunctions on my 2005-2007 pontiac g6 vehicles. this investigation (pe08-054) resulted in safety recall 09v-036, which involved 7,927 my 2005 and 85 my 2006 g6 vehicles that were manufactured in january 2005 only. the complaints identified for this investigation include vehicles that fall outside of the my2005-2006 scope as well as my2007-2009. odi has opened this investigation to further analyze the scope, frequency, and consequence of the alleged problem.odi reports cited above can be reviewed at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints under the following identification (odi) numbers: 10186123, 10198379, 10226647, 10233337, 10237257, 10237443, 10242892, 10242974, 10245994, 10246811, 10247445, 10248648, 10251698, 10252653, 10256146, 10259164, 10259508, 10262510, 10265137, 10267563, 10272554, 10272680, 10274756, 10276198, 10278314, 10280214, 10280437, 10280702, 10281405, 10282601, 10283648, 10283709, 10283872, 10283981, 10284439, 10284739, 10284895, 10287117, 10288681, 10288769, 10290292, 10290754, 10291552, 10292045, 10292342, 10292602, 10293731, 10294340, 10294987, 10296554, 10297002, 10298743, 10311147, 10312295, 10315452, 10315923, 10323819, 10325883, 10331954, 10334393, 10335330, 10336458, 10339070, 10339082, 10339962, 10341313, 10341720, 10341956, 10342135, 10342311, 10343065, 10343160, 10343380, 10343552, 10345234, 10345667, 10346508, 10346703, 10347380, 10347975, 10347988, 10348195, 10348484, 10348702, 10348929, 10349096, 10349144, 10349728, 10350337, 10350521, 10350744, 10352203, 10361349, 10361827, 10362834, 10367071, 10368142, 10369205, 10369862, 10373273, 10374645, 10374747, 10377939, 10379879, 10381158, 10381620, 10382960, 10383965, 10386426, 10389668, 10392581, 10393829, 10394125, 10396647, 10399927, 10400458, 10400984, 10401363, 10401464, 10402717, 10403746, 10403971, 10405393, 10405413, 10407113, 10408424, 10408468, 10410850, 10412313, 10413139, 10414693, 10416069, 10418583, 10420933, 10421355, 10421423, 10421445, 10422254, 10423956, 10425361, 10425391, 10426017, 10426529, 10426787, 10428011, 10428874, 10428883, 10429031, 10429156, 10430063, 10432946, 10434054, 10434857, 10434904, 10434936, 10435989, 10437323, 10438816, 10439882, 10441803, 10441938, 10443742, 10444920, 10445188, 10445424, 10446383, 10447843, 10448235, 10448509, 10448994, 10450150, 10450225, 10450513, 10453534, 10461152, 10461732, 10462109, 10462511, 10463009, 10463197, 10463381, 10464125, 10464372, 10468772, 10468993, 10469095, 10469673, 10471918, 10472737, 10474209, 10475196, 10475636, 10476699, 10476719, 10476721, 10476902, 10477478, 10479221, 10480124, 10480866, 10481987, 10482008, 10482132, 10482148, 10483307, 10485249, 10487427, 10487512, 10487969, 10489094, 10490655, 10491871

I noticed my brake lights were on when i wasnt using the brakes and went off when i pressed the brake pedal and sometimes the brake lights just flash on and off when the brakes aren't being used. this has been an ongoing, very frustrating, not to mention dangerous problem, especially at night! i contacted the manufacturer and since my vehicle wasn't made at a particular location, it didn't fall under a recall they had previously issued for this very same problem and refused to try to fix the issue. please have this car manufacturer extend the recall to all 2006 pontiac g6 vehicles.

As many owners of this vehicle are experiencing..trouble getting the vehicle in gear from park, have to step on the brakes to the floor.brake lights work in the reverse direction and 3rd brake light stays on when foot is not on the brakes..help please..this is a matter of safety and may cause injury or death..my vin number was not listed on the gm recall. my vin number was about 1,000 cars after the recall.i am going to a gm dealer and i have been told a new brake pedal comes with the brake sensor..i do not want to throw a ton of money not knowing the exact problem.

Drivers headlight went out. replaced bulb. 3 days later bulb out again. took back got new bulb. 3 weeks later pass headlight went out. took for replacement bulb. 1 week later bulb on passenger went out again. got another replacement. 2 weeks later, drivers side went out again then came back on next day. took to mechanic who said there are major problems with the wiring harness on these cars. take to a gm dealer. i now have no head lights at all and gm will not back the issue saying it is not a safety issue. how can no headlights not be a safety issue. what if they go out while you are driving at night? i have read on gm forums there is a known issue with this vehicle. the wiring harness is faulty and the headlight connector melts. *tr

The first instance that i was made aware of this issue was when a police officer pulled me over to question the brake lights issue of them not coming on while i was stopped. it appeared that they were just not working, however the issue initially went away and i was not made aware of the brake lights working intermittently for a year after that. occasionally other drivers have signaled that there is something amiss with the brake lights. however, it appears that now that the car is at 100,000+ miles, the issue with the brake lights is now constant. the issue does not disappear and reappear. we have now had another driver follow the car to test the brake lights, and it is exactly that the lights are on continuously while driving and occasionally turn off and then when the brakes are pressed, the lights turn off, and so on. it appears that the contact is incorrect between the brake pedal and the brake lighting. it appears that the exact issue that i am experiencing is described by: nhtsa campaign id number: 09v036000 however, my car's vin is not included in the stated impacted population, however the manufacturer does state that the issue could afflict more cars, but that the primary period in which this manufacturing issue occurred was addressed. i would argue that point as it appears that this car is impacted by this without any recourse. *tr

The brake lights on the vehicle come on randomly while driving. this causes the lights to be inoperable while depressing the brake pedal. i have been in several close calls for rear end accidents. stopped by the police on 2 separate occasions. also this is the exact problem that gm has in the 2005-06 pontiac g6 brake light recall notice. i have had the vehicle serviced under recall 2 times now. the fix lasts approximately 3 to 4 months, then the exact same, extremely dangerous, brake light and cruise control issue returns. when the problem occurs the cruise control disengages at random also. this has caused many nerve racking situations when cruise control disengages in traffic while traveling up a hill. gm's fix of applying dielectric grease to the connector is a band aid type fix and is not a remedy for this extremely dangerous recall issue. the newer model g6 vehicles do not have this issue, making it obvious that gm saw a need to fix the problem in house. this problem has been occurring for 4 years at minimum. the car currently has 89k miles and i am the original owner since new. i keep the car in immaculate mechanical condition. this defect needs to be fixed in the correct manner before somebody loses a life.

Intermittent brake lights. unpredictable. almost rear-ended. this is a known defect but not subject to recall due to my vin . i understand this is a common problem for this car. very dangerous. i should have been notified by gm as to this serious problem. further, gm should issue a recall for all vehicles with this problem, not just a select few. how could this have been overlooked or ignored??? all owners should be notified of this problem immediately. this has been given nhtsa # 09v036000. tsb sb-08-05-22-009a

I was recently informed that my break light was illuminated while i was driving. the light went off when i stopped the car. that problem also affects the cruise control. the cruise control is not working because the break light is illuminated. or the cruise control disengages after a while without me applying the break pedal. i had the break switch replaced twice but that was not the problem. when i surged the internet i found numerous g6 owners with the same problem. i called gm to question the recall and was told that my vin number wasn't part of the recall. i would need to go to the dealer and have to pay for the repair. i don't think it is right from gm to include only a handful of cars in the recall when obviously other cars same year same model have exactly the same problem. the internet is full of postings complaining about the same issue.

I have a 2006 pontiac g6, the brake lamps stay on when the brake is not depressed and turn off when the brake is depressed. i went to 2 dealers and have seen many complaints online. they tell me that this is not a mfg defect. maybe not but it is surely a hazzard. this effects my cruise control and prevents it from working because the brake switch sticks as if the brake is being used. i had the brake switch replaced once before but it is happening again. is there not some recourse for the repair. this has happened about 7 times over the last 6 months

The brake lights on my car only work properly on an intermittent basis. the brake lights come on when the brake pedal is not engaged and the brake lights will stay on at times when the brake pedal is no longer engaged. the cruise control will also just disengage while driving down the road or fail to set a speed when trying to set. there is a current recall on this exact problem with cars like mine. however, gm claims that my vehicle is not included in this recall as the defective part/issue is not on my vehicle according to the vin number issued. *tr

I previously leased a 2005 pontiac g6, and loved the car very much. through my lease, i just had one issue, which was covered under the warranty. since the return of that lease, i purchased a 2006 g6 because i really enjoyed the car. however, i am now experiencing the same issue with this car as well. the issue is regarding the brake lights. the brake lights will illuminate without pressing the brake pedal. the danger occurs when fellow drivers are unaware if the brakes are truly being pressed. with the 2005, this problem progressed where i actually pressed the brake lights would actually go off, which was extremely dangerous. i assume that since i have owned two cars, and both have now had this problem, that it is a wide-spread issue. so, i conducted some research, and found that appears to be the case. i found information regarding a recall on this issue on several websites, noting that the recall began in february of 2009, and also provided information to call pontiac about it. upon calling this number, there were no recalls found regarding my car. i found it troublesome that i found recalls in research, but nothing was issued through pontiac, so i e-mailed them about the issue on 08/05/09. they responded with a phone call to inform me there was no recall on my car. since it is a very serious problem, i have been waiting since for a recall; however there has not been one issued as of yet, so i am hoping this information might help. some of the recall information that i found was at the following locations: http://www.internetautoguide.com/auto-recalls/09-int/2006/pontiac/g6/index.html (recall id# 69074) http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls/results.cfm (nhtsa campaign id number: 09v036000). *tr

I was driving my grandparents in my 2006 pontiac g6 and while on the highway my power steering suddenly stopped working. fortunately i was able to get off and right to a repair shop but this is an extremely unsafe problem to have. i've begun looking into common problems with this car and it seems there are a few other common problems that make this car unsafe to drive and give it a guaranteed expensive repair bill. the interior lights have also apparently shorted out and i will now be checking for a common problem i have heard in which the brake lights may be on even when the brakes are not being applied due to corrosion of a wire. these problems are very serious and could easily cause accidents, especially for a 20 year old first time car buyer like myself. *tr

When i arrived at work, a person who had been following me drove up and informed me that the brake lights on my 2006 pontiac g6 came on while i was driving and went off when i applied the brake. the cruise control also didn't work. i subsequently found out that there is a recall for 8012 pontiac g6s (nhtsa campaign id number 09v036000) for the same problem. for some reason, my 2006 g6 isn't one of those vehicles. i had to pay 254 dollars at a gm service center to have the problem repaired. i'm curious why my g6 isn't also covered by the recall as it obviously suffers from the same

I drive a 2006 pontiac g6 with a little more than 60,000 on it. in the last few weeks, my brake lights have come on without the brake pedal being pressed. the lights stay on until i press the brake pedal, at which time the brake lights go off. it's gotten to the point that the brake lights come on every 5-6 seconds, at which time i have to press the pedal to reset them. this problem -- the exact opposite of what brake lights are designed to do -- has nearly caused two accidents. on oct. 19, 2009, i took my vehicle to the dealership where i bought it, and was told that the sway bar and tie rods needed to be replaced. i was told that would fix the problem. it didn't. i then was told that my brakes -- front and rear-- needed to be replaced. on oct. 29, 2009, i replaced the front brakes but not the rear -- my brake mechanic said the rear brakes had at least 20,000 miles left on them. none of these repairs fixed the problem (and none of the old parts are available). this did not surprise me, as none of the repairs had anything to do with electrical wiring. having done some research, i found that there is a gm recall for my very problem (recall # 09v036000). the recall began on feb. 17, 2009. i called pontiac about the problem and was told by customer service that because my vin was not part of the recall, they were not responsible for the problem. i asked whether it was possible that another pontiac g6, not listed in the recall, could have the same problem as those recalled. i was told that was not possible. the arrogance of pontiac has baffled and upset me, and i am to the point where i have contacted legal counsel. if i am involved in an accident because of this problem, i could be at fault and i can't afford a lawsuit. *tr

In november 2007 my wife started experiencing problems with her brake lights on her 2006 g6. she was stopped a couple of times by the local police due to her brake lights staying on constantly. on 12/6/2007 we took our car to a repair shop and paid $106.94 to have it repaired. they r&r'd a brake light switch. after that the problem persisted, we took it back and they finally said that they didn't have any idea what was wrong since they replaced the switch a second time. we've continued to have suffer through the problem until a co-worker of my wife's stated that his wife had the same problem and that there was a gm product safety recall on g6's for that problem. today we took our car to a gm dealer and was refused service because our vin number doesn't fall between 64100001 and 64100093. we've experienced all the same problems described in the memo and she's experienced problems on the road (almost being hit from the rear because drivers following her can't tell when she's braking) when traveling because this condition exist. we're simply asking help in getting this situation resolved (getting our car fixed). we've been loyal gm customers up to now, (we also own a bonneville and a chevy van) but with service such as this that situation is likely to change. *tr

For approximately six months the brake lamps have been staying on at times even when the brake pedal is not depressed. the brake lights would go off and on without depressing the brake pedal. beginning on september 12, 2009 the brake lights stayed al the time. on september 18, 2009 took the vehicle to the gm dealer to correct the problem and the brake pedal position sensor was replaced. problem was corrected for two days only. presently the brake lights remain illuminated as soon as the car is started and remains on. called pontiac and was told my vin was not covered by the recall. also had problems with the loss of power in the electric power steering. this began just after having the vehicle for 7 months. the power steering would loss power randomly. approximately two or three times a week the power steering would go out. by restarting the engine, the power to the steering would almost always return. a few times the engine had to be restarted several times. *tr

This problem happened out of the blue about a year ago, summer 2008. i was pulled over three times by highway patrol and asked why i was riding my brakes. i wasn't. the brake lights were on while i was driving, went off when i mashed the brakes, flickered back on while idling, then stayed on when i gave it gas. i had it fixed then under warranty. a year later, the problem is back. i was told by the pontiac dealer service manager it would cost almost $900 to replace the bcm (body control module) plus labor. or i should buy an extended warranty, drive the car 30 days, and then have it fixed. on top of the obvious safety issues of faulty brake lights, i'm also not as focused on what's in front of me because i'm also extra worried about what's behind me. *tr

The rear exterior brake lights remain illuminated when the brake pedal is not being pressed and the parking brake is not engaged. the brake lights will then go out or not be illuminated when the brake is applied. we have had near misses with vehicles behind us almost rear-ending us. it occurs very frequently, but not constantly. have taken to one shop and one dealership with no resolution. have appointment with another dealership. very dangerous condition; especially since we are usually transporting a 10 month old child.

*tr

2006 g6 pontiac. consumer writes in regards to brake lights constantly staying on and recall *tgw the consumer stated the vehicle was taken to the dealer to have the recall performed due to finding information on the internet. when the consumer and his grandson arrive at the dealer, they were informed gm would not cover the recall. *jb

My wife purchased a 2006 pontiac g6 in sept. 2007. 2 weeks after we purchased the car the brake lights didn't work correctly. they would either come on and stay on or blink off and on while driving. we've taken the car in at least 9 times and the problems still exist. this issue has become a safety hazard and i'm worried that someone will rear-end us while my son and daughter are in the back seat. we've contacted gm twice now and nothing seems to be done. they replaced numerous parts and nothing seems to fix the problem. there are a number of other g6 owners that are experiencing the exact same issue. gm has issued a recall, which they applied a lubricant to the wiring; this has not even began to solve this issue. to me this was the least expensive recall that could be issued and was accepted for some reason. something needs to be done before this gets out of hand. what will it take for gm to accept responsibility for the poor product they produced? it's a no wonder why more consumers purchase foreign cars over our own. we don't stand behind our products. this is a serious issue and needs to be addressed. my 2 year old daughter and son ride in the back seat of this car. they are very important to my family. this needs to be addressed now. *tr

*tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 pontiac g6. she stated that the brake lamps illuminate when the brake pedal has not been depressed, or the lamps illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed. she contacted the dealer in reference to recall # 09v036000 (exterior lighting:brake lights), the technician concluded that because the vehicle identification number was excluded from the recall, she was ineligible for a free remedy. no repairs were made. she was awaiting a response from the manufacturer. the failure and current mileages were 40,000. updated 12/22/09 *bf updated 12/222/09.*jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 pontiac g6. the contact stated that the brake lamps remained illuminated when the brake pedal was not depressed. the contact had to apply extreme pressure to the brake pedal to shift gears into the park position. brake lamps that are not operating properly could fail to warn another driver of the braking status and could also lead to a crash. she notified the manufacturer in reference to recall # 09v036000, exterior lighting, brake lights; however, they confirmed that her vin was excluded and ineligible for a free remedy. no repairs have been made. the vin was not available. the current and failure mileages were 58,000.

Please reference nhtsa campaign id number 09v036000. on 2/17/09, gm recalled 8,012 2005-2006 pontiac g6 vehicles, because the brake lamps would not operate properly due to 0 corrosion in a wiring connector. symptoms include brake lamps illuminating when brake pedal is not depressed, brake lamps failing to illuminate when brake pedal is depressed, cruise control will not engage and greater than normal brake force is required to shift vehicle out of park. i was informed that my 2006 pontiac g6 was not included in this recall, vin [xxx] . however, my vehicle is experiencing the exact problems as described in the recall notice. i contacted gm's owner center to try and get my vehicle covered. the gm representative (ted) advised me that i must first have the pontiac (gm) dealer perform a diagnostic test at my expense, and that, depending on the outcome of the diagnostic test, gm may or may not cover my vehicle. since this is a documented safety issue, i find gm's response to be completely unacceptable. i am therefore requesting that nhtsa require gm to cover the cost of needed repairs for any gm vehicle that has this problem. as noted in the recall notice, brake lamps that are not operating properly may not warn a driver in a following vehicle of the braking status and could lead to a crash without prior warning. this is a serious safety issue and i find it unacceptable that gm would not repair, at their expense, any vehicle with this problem. thank you. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 pontiac g6. the contact stated that there was an intermittent issue with the brakes on her vehicle. whenever she depressed the brake pedal, the brake lights would dim. whenever she depressed the accelerator pedal, the brake lights would illuminate. the dealer stated that she would have to pay $95 per hour to have the vehicle inspected. the contact declined service and the issue seemed to have corrected itself the following day. on june 23, 2009, the failure recurred. the dealer and manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 09v036000. the current mileage was approximately 60,000 and failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

My 2006 pontiac g6 brake lights are reversed. when i'm driving, they are constantly on and when i stopped they turn off. it seems to be an intermittent thing that my dealer has attempted to fix twice. my vehicle is now at the dealer for a 3rd time. *tr

Brake lights not functioning properly! brake lights either was on all the time or flickered. the dealer has been great by putting me in alt transportaion ,but seemed the problem only existed with me for they did not have the problem with the car while in their possesion, but when i picked up my car the problem was again there. they have replaced the brake light switch, abs module, and reprogrammed the bcm. but the problem still existed. very dangerous, no one could tell when stopping ,slowing or going or just riding the brakes. this has to be addressed . *ak

Grinding noise when changing gears on 6 speed manual transmission. clicking or popping noises from transmission when taking foot off of gas. transmission has a very poor feel generally and generally feels disconnected from the vehicle. grinding is more apparent with low speed shifts or when turning. the second complaint is that the fog light button and the seat heater switch get noticeably hot while driving with the lights on. the third complaint is that the dash lights do not go on when you put the lights on manually during the day. *nm
