1999 pontiac grand am 2.4 l auto severe brake failure---replacement of pads 8 times, rotors 3 times and calipers 2 times in 80,000 miles. brakes occasionally lock up and make loud grinding and squealing noises steering shudders and vehicle pulls to left.. participating pontiac dealer failed to fix this problem since purchase at 11,000 miles. under warranty replacement it has had 6 door panels due to peeling leather on top of panel, 5 gear shifters due to dealers improper installation, 2 factory cd/radio failures, 1 rack and pinion unit, 2 front strut assemblies due to knocking noise from front of car (went bad after 10,000 miles use), problem with hesitation at idle-cold start(unsuccessfully diagnosed by dealer) carpet loose in trunk around latch assembly(too short for trunk and was hot glued to back wall of car by dealer instead of replacement). turn signals still occasionally fail to work(dealer said they worked just fine) battery connection in factory battery broke loose spilling corrosive battery acid all over around battery tray area. all four wheel covers have been replaced because of pie pan noise when you hit a bump (new ones did not fix problem). after warranty was up pontiac' care hotline or the dealer could care less that after dozens of trips for repairs the dealer still didn't fix the car while it was still under warranty. since then, besides the unrepaired items on my car, the alternator went bad at 60,000 miles ($120), glass in interior rear view mirror broke while adjusting, both outside rear view mirrors have broke off in two different automatic car washes (held into door by a stud mounted into 1/4 inch of plastic in the mirror). and the ignition switch failed at 75,000 miles($300). fog lights and backup lights have water condensation in them shorting out bulbs. surprisingly ,this car is babied ,but by in my description you sure couldn't tell it. *nlm

Rear lights use two bulbs on each side. each bulb has two filaments (one for parking light, one for brake light). the brake light filament of the inside bulb on the left side of the car does not work. further investigation led to the conclusion that the bulb socket connection had some sort of material interfering with the electrical connection. i have personally observed the exact same problem in roughly 20% of all 1999 grand ams that i have seen on the road. *ak

The turn signal flasher module on my daughters 1999 grand am gt (54,000 miles) continues clicking after the signal has shut off. at times the unit has continued to make this noise for up to 15 minutes constantly. this is extremely distracting for a teen driver. i have located the nhtsa action # rq04005 on this issue. pontiac had previously conducted a recall of 2000 my grand ams for this issue. the nhtsa summary indicates pontiac agreed to replace the turn signal hazard flasher for a period of 10 years or 150,000 miles. this vehicle was placed in service 5-12-99 (less than 9 years ago). i contacted pontiac and was advised there was a special policy on this issue #04098 that covered the diagnosis and replacement of defective parts for veh's with in vin# range xm893151 - xm 945549. i was advised that due to my vehicle vin i was not covered. it should be noted that i am not the original owner. however i have obtained a gm vis for the vehicle which clearly shows several earlier problems with the flasher. i did advise the pontiac rep of this info with no response. i feel that it is clear that my problem is directly related to the issues identified by nhtsa in action #rq04005. please help. *tr

I have been reading the reports about the blinkers switch and how it keeps clicking even when it isn't being used. i had this problem. first it was only once in a while then it got to be more often. the sound would click one or twice after i turned off the blinker then it was to the point it wouldn't stop. i contacted the dealer and they said it wasn't part of any recall that was out, but to bring it in. the man that looked at it said that it sounded like my switch was going bad and needed to be replaced. i was going to have to save up the money to get the part. after about two weeks i was driving home from work and smelled smoke. i looked down and my steering wheel column was smoking. not really bad but i was freaking out. i only lived a block away so i just went home. when i got home i told my husband and he went out and pulled the steering wheel column off. he was looking at it and saw that there were 4 point type things that were sticking together. these went to the blinker they activate it when you flip the switch. the smoke was from these touching. he filed them down and put my steering column back together and i haven't had the clicking problem since. so it wasn't my blinker switch after all. some of you who have been having problems similar to this may want to check it out. it may just save you time and money. good luck. *jb

The turn lights on our pontiac grand am se v6 have been going in and out at random. i asked my father about this and he said to try pushing the hazard light button. he got a recall notice for his 2000 pontiac grand am last year but has not experienced this problem, so i want to know if the same recalled 2000 part number hazard switch and wiring of the turn light through it are the same as my 1999 ,the two cars are virtually identical in every way. if they are the same part and procedure of problem then i guess my complaint is with the nhtsa who did not include this part in the 2000 recall notice. please do diligence, this is my family's car. *tr

I have a 1999 pontiac grand am gt. whenever the turn signal is on it relays to the hazard switch and a clicking sound is heard to notify the driver that the signal is on. well last year there was times when the turn signal would all of a sudden stop. i would have to mess with the hazard switch a few times and then the blinkers would work again. this was occasional for about a year then last month the clicking would sometimes not stop even when the turn signal is not on. also it would erratically click very fast again with the turn signal not on. i checked out info on the website and apparently a lot of people are having this problem. here is the forum of several postings of similar problems http://www.autoweb.com/content/research/forums/index.cfm/action/posts/fid/2831 i noticed there is a recall for something similar to this on a 2000 but when i called pontiac they said it can not be for a 1999. why, if so many people are having the same problem with their multi function switch and its connection to the clicking in the hazard switch, does pontiac not recall this item? *jb

Turn signals malfunction/inoperable. 1st replacement (defective): multi-function switch failed at 31,825 miles 2nd replacement (defective): multi-function switch failed at 79,287 miles ***please note: gm's special policy #04098 will only cover replacement of the hazard warning switch. the part that has failed multiple times is the multi-function switch (part #22676853). this appears to be a common problem with these cars and gm is not covering the replacement of the multi-function switch! the failure of the turn signals is a very dangerous situation! *jb

I own a 1999 pontiac grand am. recently there was a recall notice regarding conditions with the hazard warning flasher switch, causing the switch to crack. as a result, the blinkers, or the hazards can sometimes work intermittently, or not at all. this recall was released for 2000 and 2001 model years. i am experiencing these same types of problems with the flashers, however, since my car is neither of these model years, i was told that my car would not be fixed at no charge. i believe this is a safety hazard and pontiac should take responsibility and release a recall to include the 1999 model year. i contacted the pontiac cust service center, and i was told to file a complaint with the nhtsa. i look forward to a resolution on this issue. *jb

There is currently a recall for 2000-2001 pontiac grand am's due to a malfunction with the hazard light switch. i have been experiencing the exact same symptoms of the malfunction with my 1999 grand am. based on conversations with the local pontiac dealership, many individuals owning 1999, 2002, and 2003 grand ams are experiencing the exact same malfunction as the hazard light switch used in all 1999-2003 grand ams is the same. i have spoken with pontiac customer support regarding the issue. they, pontiac, have refused to repair the malfunction with my vehicle as they state the recall does not apply. i offered to have a pontiac service department diagnose the problem with my vehicle out of my own pocket if pontiac would cover the cost of repairs in the event that the problem was identical to the recall. they refused, again stating that even if the problem was identical to the recall, they could not cover the cost of repair as the vehicle is not a 2000 or 2001 model. *jb

Certain passenger vehicles have hazard warning switches that may experience solder joint cracking caused by rapid temperature transitions and the soldering process. if solder joint cracking occurs and results in an open circuit, the turn signals/hazard lamps become intermittent or inoperative. consumer had the same problem. dealer admitted this vehicle had the same hazard switch. *ak

Where to start, .bought 1999 grand am gt in august of 2002 and ithas been downhill ever since. replaced the alternator twice, have experienced the same intake manifold gasket problem, which was replaced, but still led to the demise of my engine, causing camshaft to snap in half. thought the trouble was over with the rebuilt engine that was put in, but that was not the case. the window regulator broke in the middle of a snowstorm ,causing me to drive with no driverside window. with the new regulator i assumed that the window would stop squeaking, which did not. i assumed the scratches on windows were just from me-sand or some other abrasive material in the window tracks--after reviewing other complaints i discovered i was not the only one with this problem. have experienced various issues with the no trac/abs lights, replaced the waterpump, done brakes 4 times in 4 years, front headlights are milky and make it hard to see at night. have replaced the starter 4 times in just the past 2 years. needless to say after reading all complaints i feel much better knowing that it is not just me, or my car, but all pontiacs. bought the car for $10000, have put over $5000 worth of work into it. will never buy another pontiac. *ak

EXTERIOR LIGHTING - TAIL LIGHTS
11/13/2006808/01/1998
I own a 1999 pontiac grand am and have noticed that the rear brake light bulbs create enough heat at the contact point to melt the plastic housing of the bulb base over approximately 6 months. the resultant melted plastic eventually brakes the contact and coats the metal at the bulb base with plastic making the bulb useless and nonfunctional. *jb

EXTERIOR LIGHTING - TURN SIGNAL
08/18/200710005/01/2005
The turn lights on our pontiac grand am se v6 have been going in and out at random. i asked my father about this and he said to try pushing the hazard light button. he got a recall notice for his 2000 pontiac grand am last year but has not experienced this problem, so i want to know if the same recalled 2000 part number hazard switch and wiring of the turn light through it are the same as my 1999 ,the two cars are virtually identical in every way. if they are the same part and procedure of problem then i guess my complaint is with the nhtsa who did not include this part in the 2000 recall notice. please do diligence, this is my family's car. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 35 mph, the directional signals only worked intermittently. when activated, the signals worked for a few seconds, then failed. the vehicle was taken to a service dealer, who was unable to determine the problem.

I have a 1999 pontiac grand am. in november of 2004 my turn signal started to malfunction. it would just not work for a period of time then it worked part of the time. i still have the same problem to this day. now more than ever it hardly ever works. i am now using my are whenever i have to make a turn in my vehicle. i have asked a munroe mechanic as to why it would malfunction and he stated it was probably an electrical malfunction. i have not had the money to pay for a mechanic to take a look at the problem because he told me he would have to take a look at the whole electrical panel. *nm

Signal lights and emergency flashers work occasionally... when i bought this car in 2003 it only had 10,000 miles on it but was out of warranty because of being a 1999. i contacted the pontiac dealer in shreveport and also g.m. corp. both told me they were not aware of any problems with this. i have only spoken to 4 other grand am owners... all had same problems. it is not just my car.

My turn signals will fail to operate on occaision. when i notice that they are not working i quickly hit my hazard swicth on and off and that usually will get the turn signal to work again. i know there is a recall on 2000 models, but it seems from reading other complaints that this affects 1999 models as well.*ak

For a period of a month the turn signal operated intermittently due to a faulty hazard switch. there is a recall 03v327000 for the hazard switch, but this vehicle is not included due to vin. *ak the consumer indicated that the problem still exist. the turn signals would sometimes work if he activated the hazard lights, then they would cut off. the consumer thinks the problem is temperature related. a recall was issued for the 2000 models and up but not for the 1999 models although they are experiencing the same problem. *ph *nlm

Turn signals became inoperative while turning, causing the car following to assume i was no longer turning, and accelerate....rear-ending me. this is a recurrent issue that needs resolved. also, after the collision, the hazard lights would not work. also, just saw the recall on the 2000-2001 grand aims, allergy, and mailbox from gm for the exact same issue. i believe the recall should be mandated to include the 1999 model year as well. *ak

The turn signals and hazard flashers work very poorly...i have had tis vehicle for a year now, and every day they stop working....i have contacted to dealer many times, but each time i am told that the hazard switch might be bad..which is the same component that went bad in the 95-era grand ams that made them experience the same problem, leading pontiac to issue a recall on them....so it needs to be expanded!...they will stop working for no reason and this has almost caused a few accidents....and one time when i needed to place my hazard flashers on, they will not work....very dangerous...these are supposedto be a safety device that doesnt work..please try to recall these! previous model years of grand ams experienced the same problems!!! and i have talked to many other owners that have the same issues exactly....

While driving at 65mph on freeway vehicle stalled. finally restarted . took it to dealership. mechanic replaced pcm. drove from florida to california, made a stop in arizona due to brake rotors warping. replaced and adjusted rotors and brakes. while driving in california, vehicle stalled again. failed to restart after being parked. battery replaced after being towed to dealership. key refused to be released from ignition. air conditioner motor fan replaced. shifter cable was replaced. right turn signal lamp replaced. oil light comes on before the 3000 mile scheduled oil change, dealer failed to set computer button, consumer feels this might have had to do with vehicle stalling and not starting. *slc

My main problem is that i have had the dealer look at my turn signals four times in the past. this is going to be the fifth. i contacted pontiac and they told me there was nothing more they could do. when the car interior is hot(i.e. during a sunny day) the signals will work intermittently. as the a/c cools the car, better results are seen. we know of another '99 grand am owner who says they also have occasional problems with their turn signals. the fog lamps have mysteriously turned themselves on during the night twice in the past year. *ak

*nlm
