I am contacting you in an effort to have a vehicle recalled or to at least spawn an investigation into the brake system on 1999 pontiac grand am's. since i bought my vehicle in august of 2001 i have had nothing but problems with the brake system. grinding noises and severe vibration when applying the brakes. the car has been to the dealership countless times for the same problem to no avail. i have researched the internet to find that i am not the only 1999 pontiac grand am owner to be experiencing the same problems. i have a long commute to work and depend on this vehicle to get me to and from and i am concerned about the safety of this vehicle. i would like to know if you are currently investigating this issue and if not i am hopful that this inquiry would promt one. *ak

On the 12th of november i was about 1.5 blocks away from a stop sign and shifted down as i approached while applying my brakes. the brakes locked up and i was unable to steer or stop. i then ended up hitting a fence. the secound time that the brakes locked up i was coming from big o (getting new tires because i had to replace one that was ruined due to the previos accident). as i left the parking lot (with new tires) my brakes locked up and i slid into traffic, luckily the truck seen me and turned in the opposite direction. the third time that they locked up was two months later when i was in casper, wy. i was stopping to pull over and park, the brakes again locked up and i had no control over my car, luckily i hit the curb and was stopped. the fourth time that the rakes locked up i was on my way to douglas (for work) and i hit some ice, while trying to slow down (i was traveling about 55 mph) the brakes locked up, i had no control and i ended up in the barrow ditch. after that i really tryed not to go very fast anywhere that i went because i was scarred that they would lock up again. i had contacted the dealership, numorous times, they couldn't find anything wrong with the brakes, they told me. except for the fact that they had to replace my brakes (including rotors/pads) 6 times. then pontiac was contacted and they wrote to me saying that because my insurance paid for the damage to my car already, that they were unable to asume any responsibility for damages. i wrote them back and asked them to take another look into this claim because it went beyond the first accident, i have not heard anything out of pontiac since. i have however met two other people that have the same year car and have had similar problems. one lady i gave a ride to after her brakes locked up and che slid into a ditch, the secound (shirley mondragon) has had similar problems and told me she was going to use the pontiac complaints # that i gave to her and file one with them.*ak

With 70k miles on the car i have had the brakes and rotors replaced 4 times. after the second time, i contacted the dealer and asked if it was normal to replace these items every 18k miles and was told it was the way i drive the car. after that comment, i stopped using them for my repairs outside of warrenty. reviewing your web site made me realizing i am not the only person with this problem.

I have had to have the following repaired: the fan replaced 2 times, the brakes repaired 4 times, the radio replaced once, the water pump replaced once and the battery replaced twice. i am also having problems with the transmission it has been slipping. the intake gasket needs to replaced because antifreeze is leaking out and one of the lifters is knocking. most of these problems started at about 30,000 miles and gradually there was just one problem after another. i took it in to the dealership for the tranmission at about 32,000 miles and since the dealership couldn't get it to slip they wouldn't do anything about it. the brakes started having problems at 40,000 miles. i called gm to complain about the car and gm told me there was nothing they could do because it was out of warranty. if it was still under warranty they would replaced the rotors because the rotors were to thin when the car was manufactured. i wonder why no recall was sent out on this. the brakes are an important part of a car. the battery, radio and fan were replaced at about 30,000 also. then the fan was replaced again at about 70,000. the intake started giving me problems that about 90,000. the second battery was installed at about 95,000. the lifter started having problems at about 110,000. the transmission has slipped ever since i got the car.

Tl-the contact owns a 1999 pontiac grand am. the contact stated that when attempting to brake, she noticed a grinding noise. the vehicle was taken to a repair shop where the mechanic stated that the brake had begun to rub against the rotors, the caliper was not locked into place and the brakes did not wear in an up and down motion but in a side-to-side motion which caused the noise the contact heard. the contact called the sales dealership who offered no assistance. the vehicle had not been repaired. the manufacturer had not been notified. the current mileage was approximately 153,000. the failure mileage was approximately 139,000-bk

Dt*: the contact stated while driving at various speeds the engine overheated. the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop for inspection. the mechanic determined the engine's high performance additive caused corrosion to the aluminum cylinder head. the cylinder head was replaced which corrected the problem. updated 3/28/2006 - the water pump failed. the battery and brakes failed. the coolant light illuminated. the dealer determined that the antifreeze had congealed and needed to be flushed and replaced. the driver side headlight went out. the driver side window regulator broke. *nm

I bought my 1999 grand am in oct' 04. the first 2 mo. of owning it my alternator went out. a few months later i had to replace my front brakes. shortly after that my(2nd) alternator and a/c pump went out not to mention the battery too. oh and not only has the service engine light been on most of the time, a second service engine light came on! i have never known a vehicle to have 2 service engine lights on at the same time!! was this some kind of premonition!? as soon as i got the car back,i went and picked my kids up to go to the fair. we were not even 2 miles out of town yet when my engine started overheating. i had to pull over and wait for quite sometime before i could make it home safely with my children. now my car that i've spent a lot of money on, not just purchasing the car,but also in parts is currently in the shop for either a blown head gasket or the engine block is damaged. the mechanic told me this is happening to a lot of these specific cars or should i say engine type. nevertheless, this is costly and very dangerous to everyone who owns one of these lemons!!!! something needs to be done real quick with these problems or the manufacture of these vehicles will be paying for more than just parts! *cb *nm

(3.4l v6) i had to have the waterpump replaced in spring of 2003. now the head gaskets are broken the intake manifold seals again are broken. my transmission is no longer working. in other words i can not drive my car anymore; it is sitting my garage. the cost amounts to more than the car is worth in dollars and i still owe $9.500 on this car.

1999 pontiac grand am 2.4 l auto severe brake failure---replacement of pads 8 times, rotors 3 times and calipers 2 times in 80,000 miles. brakes occasionally lock up and make loud grinding and squealing noises steering shudders and vehicle pulls to left.. participating pontiac dealer failed to fix this problem since purchase at 11,000 miles. under warranty replacement it has had 6 door panels due to peeling leather on top of panel, 5 gear shifters due to dealers improper installation, 2 factory cd/radio failures, 1 rack and pinion unit, 2 front strut assemblies due to knocking noise from front of car (went bad after 10,000 miles use), problem with hesitation at idle-cold start(unsuccessfully diagnosed by dealer) carpet loose in trunk around latch assembly(too short for trunk and was hot glued to back wall of car by dealer instead of replacement). turn signals still occasionally fail to work(dealer said they worked just fine) battery connection in factory battery broke loose spilling corrosive battery acid all over around battery tray area. all four wheel covers have been replaced because of pie pan noise when you hit a bump (new ones did not fix problem). after warranty was up pontiac' care hotline or the dealer could care less that after dozens of trips for repairs the dealer still didn't fix the car while it was still under warranty. since then, besides the unrepaired items on my car, the alternator went bad at 60,000 miles ($120), glass in interior rear view mirror broke while adjusting, both outside rear view mirrors have broke off in two different automatic car washes (held into door by a stud mounted into 1/4 inch of plastic in the mirror). and the ignition switch failed at 75,000 miles($300). fog lights and backup lights have water condensation in them shorting out bulbs. surprisingly ,this car is babied ,but by in my description you sure couldn't tell it. *nlm

I have a 99 pontiac grand am gt with 72000 miles. i have had several issues with the car. first, (at approx 50k) the coolant light came on, i took it to firestone and they had to replace the water pump and the serpentine belt. the brakes grind and i had the pads/rotors checked and they check out okay? occasionally, the car will sputter under acceleration for no reason. the coolant light came on again at 71k and now the gasket has to be replaced at my own cost. from my research, gm and pontiac know about the problem, but will not issue the recall. they continue to pocket the money from those that are uninformed and from those who are. if i could, i would get rid of this car and never buy a gm product again. *nlm

Where to start, .bought 1999 grand am gt in august of 2002 and ithas been downhill ever since. replaced the alternator twice, have experienced the same intake manifold gasket problem, which was replaced, but still led to the demise of my engine, causing camshaft to snap in half. thought the trouble was over with the rebuilt engine that was put in, but that was not the case. the window regulator broke in the middle of a snowstorm ,causing me to drive with no driverside window. with the new regulator i assumed that the window would stop squeaking, which did not. i assumed the scratches on windows were just from me-sand or some other abrasive material in the window tracks--after reviewing other complaints i discovered i was not the only one with this problem. have experienced various issues with the no trac/abs lights, replaced the waterpump, done brakes 4 times in 4 years, front headlights are milky and make it hard to see at night. have replaced the starter 4 times in just the past 2 years. needless to say after reading all complaints i feel much better knowing that it is not just me, or my car, but all pontiacs. bought the car for $10000, have put over $5000 worth of work into it. will never buy another pontiac. *ak

I think that my car is a major lemon! the car has been took in so many times for the brakes it's almost impossible to realize. i've took the car to two different dealerships and neither one can fix it right. the power steering went out in july 2000 and then in november 2000 and then started making the same noise a few months ago but i was told this time that it was normal. the throttle sticks once in awhile but again i'm told nothing found and wd-40 was sprayed on the throttle body. the car likes to keep going when applying the brake. the window motors have been replaced in all four windows 1-2 times each and need it again. the paint job and clear coat were peeling and bubbling and they spot sanded and painted my car. i've contacted pontiac at least 3-4 times about my car and i've also filled out lemon law papers through consumer protection agency of north carolina. gm said they are investigating it and eller pontiac (the other dealership that i've took it to) said that they don't think that they are responsible because i didn't buy the car from them. i'd like to know who is responsible? personelly i think the manufacturer is but of corse it's been about a month and still no word as to what they are going to do. i want the piece of junk bought back. the car has spent a total of 36 days in the shop not counting all the times i took it in and waited on it. it was in the shop 20+ days before 24,000 miles. the people at enterprise car rental know me already. when i walk in there, they ask me what's wrong with the car now! if you can help please do. my consumer protection file no. is 0103355. thank you for possibly trying to help. sincerely, jackie browning. *ak

We have had continuous problems with this vehicle. the door panels peeled off the two rear doors and were replaced, the tire pressure light continually comes on, the hinges on the driver door keep getting stuck and sometimes the door won't even shut, it will not shift into first gear, and now the rotors/brakes are out. it is currently in the shop again. we take it monthly if not more often. this is certainly a burden. the service department is not informative. they don't explain why these things happen nor do they tell us if they have ordered parts for the vehicle. we get cards in the mail when the parts are in and we must schedule yet another trip to the dealership. the vehicle is completely unreliable. the brake issue is extremely scary when we only have 16,000 miles on the vehicle. never before have i owned such a lemon. this is our second brand new car and the other has had zero problems and it is a 1998 malibu with almost 60,000 miles. this makes no sense and pontiac is doing little to resolve these issues. *ak

Front end pulls to the left when when passing, front in shakes at times, dealer replaced brakes, abs system, tires, wheels, did alinements and told us that it is normal for this car to pull to the left when passing. we told them that when this happens, we feel that it could cause the driver to lose control and go into on coming traffic. they said they have done everything possible and we are still having problems with the front end. currently the brakes started making noise when we turn the car to the left. the dealer says we will have to pay for this problem since our warrenty has expired. we feel that there is a major problem with the design of the front end system including the abs brake system, the low traction system and front end suspension. we are currently looking for options to deal with this very hazzardly problem. thank you. *ak

Since this car was purchased new on november 1998 (1999 pontiac grand am) it has been in the repair shop for the following reasons: transmission was rebuilt, front end has been repaired 3 times, brakes repaired (warped rotors), air bag cover warped and was replaced, door paneling came off and was replaced with new paneling, glove box door was loose.
07/01/1999
The source of the problem is unidentified by the dealerships i've been to for service. the car will periodically violently pull to either side (has occured on both sides), thrved out of control, the brakes in general are poor and don't stop the car well; i have to downshift the automatic in order to stop at times, the locks quit working and needed reprogrammed three times, the car has lost power while driving and took a few minutes to restart. there are other problems with the car (such as rear windshield rattles, poor gas mileage 14 city, 19 highway, bad gas gauge) but they are not the major safety problems. i have almost been in several accident between the brakes and the 'violent pulling' but pontiac keeps telling me nothing is wrong with the car since they can not replicate the problem. the problem occurs intermitantly. i was told the car's lease would be repurchased, another time pontiac promised to replace the car if i took it in three more times, i have complied with their wishes, but they are now insisting that i start bringing the car back for service more. the car has been in 9 times, 7 for major safety problems. the state lemon laws says after 3 times i should have a refund or replaced vehicle, my choice, but pontiac, and the dealership either don't return my calls, or when pontiac does call they tell me to keep taking the car back for service. in the mean time the car is a serious risk to myself and other motorists or pedestrians being that i've lost control of the car more than 10 times in the past. i seriously hope that this issue doesn't keep getting bumped around. i'm going to send my info to the bbb, but that will take up to 40 days or more for a reply, in the mean time (i'm a medical student) i need to drive to fulfill my requirements to become a physician, and i'm placing myself and others at risk because pontiac will not abide the law. *ak

(5 tires have been replaced. 4 rims have been replaced. 3 sets of brake rotors have been replaced. power steering pump replaced. power rack and pinion unit replaced. front end aligned. tires balanced 9 times.) vibration still exists at highway speeds with car pulling to the right. dealer wants to replace tires again along with one more rim. car engine temperature goes up to 230 degrees, dealer says it is normal. steering wheel still shimmies during braking and during highway speeds. front tires show cupping and premature wear patterns with only 4000 miles since being replaced. seems like dealer(s) do not want to solve problem. i would like a new car, but dealer does not want to give me one.( dot number: 91s s2 tire size: p225/50r16 )

Please recall front brakes unsafe. when the brakes are applied at any speed the steering column shakes and braking distance is increased significantly. in extreem conditions such as wet roads or stop and go traffic traction has been lost due to pulsating brakes. dealer stated that the pads were worn and that i was responsible. i contested their findings and asked for proof (i.e. pad thicknesses.) the dealer service department gave me the actual pad thicknesses which were well within working range. the dealer service department then stated that the rotors were probably warped probably due to driving in rainy conditions and that i was still responsible for the repairs. i again contested saying that the warped rotors were a result of a material failure, not wearing of the pads or rotors and should therefore be covered under warranty. after more trouble than i care to mention the dealer decided to turn down the front rotors. and the vehical drove fine after that until the rotors warped again. see second failure report.

I bought the grand am used which had 280 miles on it. ever since the date of purchase, i have had nothing but continuous problems. the major problem is the braking system. my car has had approximiatly 8 sets of rotors and 4 sets of brake pads. i have owned the vehicle for 1 year and has only 27900 miles on it. the new design rotors and pads were supposed to correct the brake pulsation, but they have not. i have had about 3 sets of the new design components. both rear windows have been replaced due to misplaced parts in the window components. i have also had 2 oil leaks on the vehicle, one on the rear seal, the other inside the engine, which required replacing different gaskets under the intake system. the radio was replaced because the play button for the tapes did not work. i have also had molding on the doors of the vehicle replaced due to paint chipping off and warped parts. i am soon going to be getting the 2 front grills replaced due to crome chipping off of them. i would not recommend anyone to purchase a grand am. my vehicle is in the repair shop at leat once a month. the reparis are completed at another pontiac dealer other than where i purchased the car because of their horrible service. i now get serviced at sapaugh gm in herculaneum, mo, who has been wonderful as far as customer service. i owned a ford product before the purchase of my gm product--i don't know if i'll ever purchase another gm product. mine has been nothing but headaches. *ak

Front end pulls to the left when when passing, front in shakes at times, dealer replaced brakes, abs system, tires, wheels, did alinements and told us that it is normal for this car to pull to the left when passing. we told them that when this happens, we feel that it could cause the driver to lose control and go into on coming traffic. they said they have done everything possible and we are still having problems with the front end. currently the brakes started making noise when we turn the car to the left. the dealer says we will have to pay for this problem since our warrenty has expired. we feel that there is a major problem with the design of the front end system including the abs brake system, the low traction system and front end suspension. we are currently looking for options to deal with this very hazzardly problem. thank you. *ak

The calipers frequently fail to release properly and have repeatedly damaged the rotors, more often in the front than rear. i bought this car in september of 2002 and a few months later began to have brake problems. it was still under warranty, but the calipers were found faulty due to their assembly to the frame. this damaged the rotors, requiring them to be replaced as well. the warranty covered the calipers but not the rotors, plus i had to pay a $50 deductible. i've had this problem several times since then. in the most recent incident, i had the front rotors replaced at inspection in october 2005. by february 2006, the right front caliper was not functioning properly and had to be replaced already. the part was still under warranty since it had only been 4 months so i was not charged for the part, but still had to pay for labor. i've owned this car for a little less than four years and the calipers and rotors continually need to be machined or replaced. i always fear that the brakes will fail when i need them the most. *jb

Front brake calipers on disc brakes are made from aluminum alloy and both calipers were close to failure by 50,000 miles. piston in caliper was so worn that it would chatter when brakes were applied at a complete stop. this defect could possibly cause piston to lodge in caliper or seal to fail around piston causing braking failures. replacement calipers on the market supposedly fix this defect. why hasn't manufacturer looked into this potentially harzardous defect?*ak

The window regulators have had to be replaced in the driver's door and both back doors. each of the windows failed to close after they were opened. the first one to go out was the driver's window and the back two windows were working occasionally at that time. the mechanic told me that they would probably need to be replaced soon, but if they stop working, i could just knock on the outside of the door or slam the door shut and they would work for a short time again. this got me through for about another month. all broke within the past year and each one has had to be replaced. the total cost to fix all three window regulators was $1188.17. i called gm to file a complaint with them and to find out why there hasn't been a recall on the regulators, (as well as the seat belts, the side view mirrors, the brakes and to find out why i also have scratches on my windows). i told them about the mycarstats.com website and explained that all of my complaints are common. i finally received a call back about a week later and was told that i would not be reimbursed for any of my repair costs which came to $2,974.58!! this total includes: brakes, calipers and rotors replaced twice for $834.08; side view mirror replaced after falling off while going through a carwash $167.86; seat belts replaced for driver and both back passengers because the plastic clips broke for no apparent reason $784.47 and of course the window regulators $1,188.17. instead, gm was offering me $1,000.00 towards the purchase of another gm vehicle!!! i asked why i would want to purchase another vehicle that they don't stand behind!?!? i told them to keep the $1,000 and expressed that i would never buy another gm product again, since these are safety features that should have been recalled years ago!! this past week, i have also noticed that the molding around the window shield is coming loose on the passenger side, so i used silicone caulking to hold it in place.

Front end of this car has been a problem since it was first purchased. the car pulls dramaticly to the lest when you try and pass another car. both manufactor and dealer says this is normal normal torque steer. this action causes the car to either into the far left shoulder of the road or alomost become uncontrolable if there is snow on the road. the brakes started shaking when the car was purchased, dealer replaced rotor assmb. and oiled calibers. brakes had to be replaced at owners expense. i have continued to try and have the front end fixed. dealer replaced tires (claims they were out of round), did not fix the problem, dealer replaced wheels (claims they were milled wrong) did not fix the probelm. manufacture states after call, that there was nothing more they can do. this car has been into the shop for these related repairs 13 times since the car was purchased. i feel that pontiac will not deal with this problem until there is a major law suit against them.*ak

Rotors warp too easily under normal driving conditions. seems to be a debate over wether there exists a tsb for this problem or not. wether or not a tsb exists, gm needs to fix this known problem so that the rotors don't need to be replaced very 15,000 miles. mine lasted untill 35,000 miles because they were replaced at around 15,000 miles before they had a chance to warp.*ak( dot number: tire size: p215/60r15 )

Dealer repaired problem twice before 12,000 miles w/o charge. vehicle was returned with same problem at 23,000 miles, and they reported that it was a failure to adjust rear brakes. the problem has since gotten worse. the vehicle was returned to them for the same warped rotor problem at 31,000 miles, and they now state that it was abuse on the brakes that caused the failure. the first two times , they repaired them promptly. now they say that it not a warranty item. how could the brakes have a similar problem for the third time, and now, finally, not be under warranty? *ak

Grand am 1999 bought used with extended warranty now expired as mileage is 130,000. i have replaced the rotors at least 3 times and have now been told by big o tires that now will need to change each time i do the brakes as the brake liners are now harder than the rotors materials. i have done many brake changes, the car still shimmies when you use the brake, was told this is normal. the last time i was in was told just under $600 to do the brakes/rotors etc and my son replaced the pads and did comment that we do have to replace the right rotor with the next brake change. we do brake changes about once a year. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 pontiac grand am. while approaching a stop at approximately 5 mph, the brake pedal extended to the floor when depressed. the contact released the pedal and attempted to depress it again, but it went all the way to the floor once more. he was forced to apply the emergency brake in order to stop the vehicle. he looked behind the passenger side rear wheel and noticed that the brake fluid was leaking from the metal line. the vehicle was towed to the repair shop and the failure was confirmed. the mechanic stated that the metal line was completely rusted. the current and failure mileages were 20,181. updated 01-11-08. *kb updated 12/12/07 *jb
